Welcome to Dear Alice, a lifestyle approach to interior design.
B
Hi, everyone. Welcome to Dear Alice. Those of you celebrating Christmas, I hope you had a very merry one yesterday. Did you guys all have a good holiday?
C
Yes.
A
Shoot. Yeah.
C
Yeah. With kids, it's always the best. The magic is back.
B
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
A
You kind of stay in your jammies all day and like, yeah, yeah, it's the best. And you're just putting together toys, you know, and like.
B
And at some point they're like, mom, open your presents. You're like, oh, I don't even need presents right.
A
I don't think because you make me at school, son. I spend all my money on you little turkeys.
C
That's. That's Mari's like. She's like, you know what the crappiest thing about Santa Claus is? That we don't get any of the credit. I'm like, you are right as a parent. You're Batman.
A
Tell your kids.
C
You know what I mean? You're just. You get none of the credit. You're in the shadows. Yeah. That's all the good parents are, at least.
A
But it is the best fairy tact. And be like, that dude's watching.
C
So true. Because they don't care what you.
A
Sorry. You better be good. He's not bringing anything. You're getting cold. So it is the best food tactic. Should they subscribe. Okay.
C
Well, speaking of Christmas, though, like, what are your guys favorite Christmas movies? I binge them all every single year. Yeah, I definitely have my favorite. But yeah, I want to know your guys.
B
You know what I think? I think that we don't have enough time between Thanksgiving and Christmas to Absolutely. Do you know what I mean?
A
You have.
B
You try and have to hurry and like, watch a Christmas movie every night and do all the things. It's so much. I can see why people put up their trees, like, way earlier because it's our favorite time of the year and it's just not long. Long enough. Yeah, but I have. As far as my favorite holiday movie, it's always been the same answer for a couple years. And then I don't know if it was you that told me about what your favorite movie is or who told me about it, but now that's my favorite movie. So, Corey, you say your favorite movie, the Family Stone.
C
Yeah, yeah, that. To me, that movie, I haven't seen it.
A
I just, like, gasped like, I've seen it.
C
I cannot believe you have not seen that movie.
A
I was holding out for this year so I could watch something new, you know, like, you, like, Catch up on, like a. Yeah. Show that everyone's raging about.
C
You really need to do that.
A
Like, it's gift for my.
C
Such a good movie.
A
It's Sarah Jessica Parker. Yeah.
C
Yes.
A
Yeah.
C
I mean, it's funny.
B
It's, you know, Claire Danes. Claire Danes is Sarah Jessica Parker's sister.
A
I love her.
B
Yeah. And Sarah Jessica Parker has this like, dry sort of throat clearing thing that she does a lot in it.
C
Yeah.
B
Yeah.
C
Luke Wilson is in it, man.
B
And he's just so, like, laid back. He makes every uncomfortable situation.
C
What's the mom's name? Like, is it Diane Keaton? Is that her? Is that her? The actress's name?
B
Yeah, I feel like it is Diane.
C
Keaton, but she's like. I'm like, man, I wish that were my mom. Yeah. She's so. Yeah. She's so good in it. The dad's. I mean, it just. The whole movie is.
B
And I have to say, it's like a pretty mellow movie, too. Like, you're not. It's not exciting. Like some. Some movies. Don't they say, like, Terminator is a Christmas movie or one of the.
C
Oh, no, no, it's Bruce Willis. Willis, yeah. Die Hard.
B
Die Hard. It's not like. And Christmas Vacation is a comedy and you know every word and it's funny and everything else. We know the holiday by the back of our hand, and it's lovely and you fall in love and you want to be in the cottage and you want to be in her house, and it's so fun. But this one is just, like, kind of easy and mellow and it's an adult movie, so you're not watching this one for the kids. You're just like, it's after everybody's gone to bed and it's just kind of thoughtful and easy and you love all the characters and so excited for.
A
Yeah.
C
Like, Rachel McAdams is in it. Gosh. You are going to. You're going to have a good.
B
You guys should be there when I.
A
Watch it for the first time.
B
Okay. Corey and I share that answer. Thanks to Corey. What's your favorite holiday movie?
A
I'm in the land of, like, children. And so, like, we're watching the Santa Claus. We're watching all the ones that they want to watch Christmas Chronicles, and they're so cute. Like, they're coming out.
B
Suzanne acts like that's. That's what they want to watch. Sue only speaks in animated movies. Her music playlists are animated movies. And she's like, you know that. What's that favorite Animated movie.
A
Any good lesson? I'm like, well, if you just watched Fox and the Hound, like, you would have learned that a long time ago.
B
Like, Seuss is always speaking government officials in parables of animated movies. Coco is Suzanne's favorite.
A
She's like, you know, she's like, you.
B
Know when the dragonfly is singing to the frog in this movie? And I'm like, I don't. I don't know.
A
So watch Family Stone. If you sit with me and watch Coco.
B
Okay. What's your favorite favorite holiday movie?
A
I'm really trying to think because I'm like, I think of Christmas vacation. I think of all those classics, which you, of course, have to watch. And I was like, what do I want to watch? Like, beside from the holiday? I want to go watch Serendipity.
B
How cute. I love that answer. Totally New York thing.
A
And they're ice skating and they're losing scarves and they're Christmas shopping and like.
B
Yeah.
A
I don't know. And like, the soundtrack was really good. Yeah. I kind of want to just go watch Serendipity.
C
Yeah.
A
At the end of the day, like, kids are down.
B
Yeah.
A
After I watch Family Stone, it's kind.
B
Of that same pace. Right.
A
Okay.
C
It's like how your Christmas typically would be and then something eventful happens to happen. Yeah. Like that type of thing.
A
You have Jeremy Piven, who's hilarious.
C
Yeah.
B
Anyways, so funny.
A
So I'll watch that.
B
Yeah, Good. I love that.
A
That was improv. Answer. Good question, though.
B
That was fun.
C
Okay, so Today's Doors Part 2. We had a long one last week. My bad, guys.
B
We couldn't make it. We figured it would be long. We couldn't make it any longer by putting this information into that podcast too. So this is your tail end of Doors.
A
We've tried to trim the bat. Yeah, we've tried.
C
So this question, this episode is from Sophia's question as well. We kind of just broke her question into a couple parts. The second part to her question was, is painting interior doors black or taupe now considered outdated? Is there a black paint color that isn't a cringe matte black, but has a pretty sheen to it that you would recommend you paint the door trim and the door the same color? What about painting the bedroom side of the door one color and painting the other side to the shared living spaces another color? So this one's like, centered more about paint. Yeah. Different hardware, that type of stuff.
A
Yeah.
B
Okay, I'm gonna take the first part. And she wants to know about painting the Interior doors black or taupe? I am just gonna give you the general answer for everybody listening to the podcast. My answer is no. We're not painting your interior doors black anymore. I think that kind of went away with the farmhouse. Like, everything's black and white. Your window grids are black. Your door. Right. I think that ship has sailed. It's a dated idea. We're not doing it today. There's always an exception to the rule. But to make this answer easy, I'm a no on it. I have seen some really beautiful interior hallways with a light taupe door and white casings. That again, is the exception to the rule. So you know who you are.
A
You know, I, I think majority of the time people are going to be a white.
B
Yeah.
A
Match their casing.
B
Yeah. Because you're going to have fun with the wall colors. You're gonna, you're gonna make other things come to life. And the door generally isn't the hero. With exception of the front door. Your front door is where you're gonna have all the fun with paint. And today's episode, we are gonna share our favorite front door colors. We're gonna. This is always a hard one. It depends on the person, the personality, the door, everything else. But we're gonna give you six of our favorite front door colors right now. So that's where you're gonna go for it. Also, you are gonna be able to break the rule on painted doors inside of a room to match the theme of that room. Maybe it's a movie theater and you painted it dark. You don't want a hard stop by having a white door inside the movie theater. You're going to go ahead and paint that door to watch. To match the interior, the powder bath. We love to paint the interior of the powder bath to match. The scene that's happening in the powder.
A
Bath is like being driven by a wallpaper. And so you're pulling a color from that for the ceiling color to like address that fifth wall and the casing. And then that door is going to like follow suit with whatever you're working around in that room. That'll go for any doors. Like my kids doors, they're color drenched. Of course I'm going to paint that side of that door blue or green or whatever the color may be. So definitely follow that rule. That it would be a real bumsky if you had a color drenched room and then you had a white door.
C
You know, also that's the reason I would say don't paint the slabs because like, let's say you're define slabs. So the slab, like the door itself and not like the trim or, you know, casing, jam or anything. Unlike a powder bath, say, the interior. Like, we're painting the trim and the door green and then you have like a black on the. But then black on the exterior, but then white jam and casing stuff. To me, it's just leave the specialness. Let it be special in the powder bath and kind of everything else. It can be like uniform and, you know, conform to the base and the case color and all of that.
A
Like, yeah, it was, it was really interesting. As we were doing some research for this podcast and I was going through our portfolio in the spaces and things, the doors take a backseat. They really quite like in the interior. And I think that is just because of the quantity of them and how many openings they are. And they're not the. It's not the big to dot. It's usually the decisions. One of the last decisions we make is paint, you know, for like the general wall colors when we understand everything else that's going on. And that like, also goes for the trim, you know, and like, what is that supposed to look like? And so anyway to. Your answer is just like, you're not trying to highlight all the rectangles happening in, you know, really rhythmatically. You're trying to let that just kind of like be a beautiful backdrop to everything else that's going on. It is, it is the entrance to and fro. And you want them to be great. You want, you want the interaction to feel good as far as the weight, but as far as like the color. Again, always exceptions, but general rule, you're going to be neutral.
B
Your interior doors are going to stay white. Now let's speak to that for one second because you are going to choose a shade of white that isn't too optically white today. Also, you're going to bump that sheen up. Remember your case and your base like we talked about on the first episode. We didn't talk about paint sheen on that, but your doors and your case in your base also, your window casings are going to bump up in gloss from your wall color. So generally wall color, we're loving satin.
A
Yeah, I'm a satin girl on the wall. And guys, I. Some people are like, oh, should we just like, should we just go flat, you know, here just like be more matted, like go sat in there. I'm just like, no, I don't know, like in my own personal opinion, like in the rule that we use here at Alice Lane is. I love a trim and a dort and semi gloss.
B
I do, too.
A
I do. I love the sheen difference from the wall as you see the profile change and lift and that the light catches it differently. I love it. I also bake this Again. Builders are going to hate me on this one. I love a satin ceiling. I love. Especially if my walls are the same color as my ceiling. I love that finish just carrying onto the ceiling, and it doesn't make it look like there was a mistake and they had to throw flat paint up there.
B
Like, you also probably don't have a textured ceiling, though.
A
No, I don't, but so I just.
B
Thought I should say that if you have a textured ceiling, which 99.9% of the folks listening to this, they're picturing that little bit of gloss just hitting that texture just right. And no, it's not cute, but it's really cute on a flat ceiling.
A
Just love it on a flat ceiling.
B
Yeah.
A
Just like, feeling that gloss when the light reflects on top of it, and you're just like, oh, there you are. I feel like I just, like, grew 10ft, you know?
B
Yeah.
A
It just lifts everything.
B
It is. It's the monochrome outfit. You're long, you're lean, you're beautiful. You're six feet tall all of a sudden. Yeah, it's great.
A
But the trim of the door. Semi gloss. Easier to clean, too.
C
Yeah, I was just gonna say that.
A
Wipe those suckers down, especially if it's white matte.
C
Oh, gosh, man.
B
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
A
Gift given. Merry Christmas.
C
Yeah.
B
Okay, that's great. Can we really quick, while we're talking about case and base on the front door, which we've just given everybody permission to go ahead and paint that and go wild with it. Whatever you want to do. But that's. We're going to use your contrast. Are you going to paint the. The case going around your door the same color as your door? I think this was one of Sophie or Sophia's questions or. Yeah, right there. Do you paint the. The doors trim and door the same color?
A
It depends on the door system that you're using.
C
I was.
A
Because. And again, this is the exception. You know, like, if it was just like this, like, very focused door entry and, like, there was nothing else, like, touching it or really around it. Your other windows. If there's, like, windows happening above it directly and those are painted white, then I would keep my trim. Bobby painted the white, and I would just do my door. The color. You know, that you're, like, feeling for the season. Right. And so, like, that's what you did. You didn't paint your trim and everything.
B
I. I want to say, as a rule, you're never going to paint your. Your door casing. I think it's always white. And then the color. I mean, I have a few examples here. I'm gonna throw up.
A
Thank you.
B
I'm not throwing up. I'm just gonna put some pictures up right here. So we have up here my. My home, which is kind of a lake. Lake house. It's got shake shingles on it. I used to have a black, almost a dark peacock front door. I did white sidelights and white casing. And the door itself is the color. I think that's very stately. Really great answer. Yeah, that's the right thing to do. This other. This other image we have is from our French modern manor. We have a black door. We've got brass kick plates. We've got great hardware. This has an arch top, double doors for a front door. And this is black with white casing. And then our third example is Rachel Parcel's home, which is a French blue door, white casing. Here's.
A
I don't know if this is one of the questions that Sophie asked, but one thing that I think is interesting that people have asked is like, do you paint the interior of your exterior door the same color as your interior.
B
Doors, or do you. Fantastic question.
A
Or do you keep it the same as the exterior paint color? I really like when, like that one statement piece is the same on the front as it is on the inside.
B
I agree.
A
It's monolithic. It feels stately and it gives you direction on that front door.
B
Yeah. The entry needs that dimension. It needs that, that class. It's usually a very small area, and it really steps it up in importance. It helps you find the front door. Adds a lot of interest. Can you imagine, like, we're inside Rachel Parcel's home right here. If those were white doors or even this French modern manor, those doors being white would be so sad.
A
So sad.
B
Yeah. We need the drama of the black door.
A
Like now you have this, your cognac color on your front door.
B
Yeah.
A
What if that was white on the inside?
B
Oh, just so sad. It would look unfinished. Yeah. Sad days are overfill. Yeah.
A
Definitely came with the same color on the outside as the inside.
B
On those circumstances, definitely. I also want to hold this up. These are a couple awesome examples from Pinterest that we just love.
A
We all have these, like, fun doors pinned.
B
Totally.
A
Something in our heart that wants One we have on.
B
We have two examples where they have white casings. The middle example is like, I don't even know, palatial or it's a brownstone from. From France somewhere. And this has a limestone casing. The door is set back probably what, 8, 10 inches or something.
C
Yeah.
B
I mean, that's so impressive. And then the door itself is a color. So that would be like the gold standard is like, let's go ahead and use the building material to go ahead and case that sucker out. Yeah, right.
C
Yeah.
B
But the rest of us don't get to live like that. So we're probably just going to do a white casing.
A
Yeah, right.
B
As a rule. Yeah.
A
Okay. Or match the trim color of whatever your windows are doing.
C
Yes.
A
If you're historical and you have a darker color trim, I think next year of your home to match, like, whatever it's painted and you're not trimming out in white. Just make sure that that's the same rule that you follow for the door.
C
Front door, I would think with like two side lights. If you were to paint the, like every. The whole system, like the one that would look really weird to me. But if it's just a single door, maybe even like single in a transom, I could see that all being like one color, depending upon what's happening on the outside of your home.
A
Circumstantial if you're gonna go outside of that rule.
C
Yeah. Yeah. So, but okay, I think rule of thumb is just painting the door.
B
Yes.
C
Is a good rule.
B
Hanging the door inside and out to answer her questions. And then we like the trim for the windows and doors, the whole set for the entry, all to be white for the most part.
A
Yep.
B
Great.
A
Okay. Love that.
B
Okay, so painting the door two different sides. We kind of talked about that in the powder bath, right?
A
Yep.
B
To answer her question. So you know, when you've created a scene, your theaters, your media rooms, your.
A
I don't know, bedrooms, like, if it's a dark bedroom.
B
Oh, you did that in your kids rooms.
A
Yeah. So white door would feel really off brand and like kind of too optic.
B
Yeah.
A
So you're going to want to paint it the same colors. If you're going dark on your trim, paint it that color on that.
B
See, so here's. Here's a real detail question. What do you paint the cream filling of the door? If the one side is, say, let's say we're talking about our project in dc, Right. We know the interior of that powder bath is pink to match all the trim and the Gucci herons and all of that. The outside is white. What is the cream filling of that door? Keep it white. That was what I was thinking. Yeah, you too, Corey? Yeah, great, whatever.
A
Like more public area. Like that's what you're going to do. Because if it is peaking, like you don't want to give it away, but then if you open it up, you're like, oh my gosh, it's herons on the wall. Like, it's so cool. So, yeah, keep the mystique for the inside of that panel.
B

We're going to really make a statement. We're going to use color. And for me, me and my personal preference, I'm gonna use all the hardware available for a front door in one place.
C
You have a. I have a mail slot knocker.
B
I do, yeah.
C
Okay.
B
And I've got a really big handset, and I just don't have a kick plate, but I thought it was too much. You got to know when to hold them. Like Kenny Rogers things about. So. But y'all, you don't have to know when to hold them. You can go hog wild if your house. If your house calls for it. And we're going to tell you some of our. Yeah, we're going to tell you where some of our favorite hardware places are to get. And maybe you already have the perfect front door, and this episode is perfect for you because all you need to do is just start putting the icing on the cake and getting all the right hardware for that. Or maybe you're going to be like me and just go hog wild and paint your door a new color this year because it's 2025 in, like, one second. So maybe one of your New Year's resolutions needs to be like, you know what? I'm going to reinvent myself. I'm going to do a new front door. As many of you know, I had this blackened navy door, like I just showed you in a picture, and I put out on my Instagram to the folks, do you think I should paint my door the same color or should we do it this beautiful Hermes orange? This dark, glossy orange? Everybody was. So I will tell you, the votes came in and everybody said, do it navy. But those that wanted me to do the orange were passionate. They were DMing me. They were hitting me up so hard that the passion out won the vote and I went for it. And I'm just telling you, it's so liberating that for a minute, I'm like, that was so fun. Should I paint my door a new color every year?
C
You know, with the guy you had do it, you probably should.
B
I know. Yeah. Well, because here's the thing, like, how much fun can we have as adults in our life? Especially if we love design. We all love design here. Right. I found a painter that is very reasonably priced. And so I think it could be a lot of fun. It's been a blast having an orange door since August.
C
Every time you drive up to your house, you're probably like, it probably catches your eye.
B
It does also.
C
That's amazing.
B
Yeah. It hasn't. And it hasn't looked like Halloween, but until Halloween, I was like, I got an orange door and my pumpkins are popping off with them. It's fun. It's fun. You know, for Thanksgiving. It's. It's just really. It's a good time.
C
Yeah.
B
And it's a little bit Palm Springsy, which we have some really fun examples of orange doors, which helped kind of, you know, get my courage up to go for it here. And you can see on both of these orange doors, they also have really great door knockers. Different shade, different sheens. So I went with gloss on mine. Not semi gloss, but gloss for my front door. What's your favorite sheen for a front door? Sue hall gloss. Yeah. So you kick it up like he.
A
Used to paint in a previous life. Yeah, I did. So, like, he is my painter, so I should for sure paint my door 100% anyway. But he said that he recently did our trim in gloss. He's like. That went on so smooth. He's just like, I love painting with gloss trim or, like, even my trim gloss. And so we did that in our bathrooms. And Pretty. It's really, really pretty. And it's just like this. I know it sounds like a really crazy, audacious move, but if you like the sheen difference, it's really fun. So I think gloss for your front door.
B
I think so, too.
A
Yeah. I'm like, if you're gonna do it, do it like.
B
Yeah, yeah, go.
C
The whole back protects better, too, honestly.
A
Exactly. Wipes up, cleans better, grimy hands. It's perfect.
B
It is perfect.
A
Yes.
B
Okay, great. Should we talk about our favorite places to get hardware? Oh, no, no. Oh, yeah. Favorite colors first. Okay, so this is a question that I get asked a lot. So I'm just going to give you guys that Hermesi dark orange color that I used. So this is a Ben More color, and it is called warmed cognac. And again, I did it in gloss. If you're watching on YouTube, you're going to see me hold this up right now. And it is. It's been really great. It's rich. It's. Yeah. It's not too juvenile.
C
Yeah, it's. I feel like it suits you, like, perfectly. So glad you did that one.
B
Yeah, I really love that. So if you're looking to do something fun. 2025, may I talk you into warmed cognac from Ben Moore? Suzanne hall, what is your true north color? What would you do if you're going to paint your color Adore a color in 2025?
A
Green. I love green. We've kind of battled, like, I'm like, are we gonna do it coral? Are we gonna do it pink? Are we Gonna do it green. Because honestly, your front door can be such a party.
B
You're gonna do all of them in the next decade. Yeah.
A
But for right now, when I was like, what would I do it like today? Like, hands down. And I love this. It's called Caulk green from Faron Ball. We should change that name.
B
I don't like Hulk Green.
A
Terrible name.
B
C A, L. That must be.
A
I'm gonna say it has like C.
B
A, L, K, E. Yeah.
A
C A, L, K, E, K. Call green number 34. Barren ball. Just like, does paint well. Like, their hues are historic. And I'm like, this is such, like, a British Scotland green. I've seen this, and it's so, so pretty. And if, like, this was in a gloss at my front door, you would know exactly where you are.
B
Also, Sue Hall's front door is. Or Sue. Sue Hall's house is from the 70s, and she has these huge white brick that's kind of Palm Springsy. And you have to go through this little tunnel, this little core, this corridor to get to the front door so the sunlight never hits it. But there's two big planting areas on the. That you could really be surrounded in greenery before you get to the front door.
A
Just honeysuckle draping all over you, and.
B
It smells really good. And then you're gonna get to the green door at the end of this green tunnel. So fun.
A
Gold harbor or something. Anyway, so, yeah, I'm like, be. Be fun. I. I will say when you are, like, really pay attention to the tones that are in this. Yes, this is a brighter green, but it's a happy, leafy, historic green. Don't think that you can just grab. I think this is the biggest mistake. Most people do when they're picking out paints. They're like, oh, well, this looks green. And they get up, get it up. And it looks like it's from Barney. If it's blue or like, it just like it's fluorescent or it's off or it doesn't have enough neutrality in it to make it historical and beautiful.
C
Yep.
A
So really, I guess, like, call in the experts. That's why we're giving you our favorites. But call and like someone that has a really great eye. If you were second guessing and do some samples, like in the sunlight of your front door. Did you do that with yours? Okay, yeah, Yeah.
B
I tested lots of shades of orange because, I mean, that was so scary. I can't believe how scared I was. Why? Why was I scared? It's one door.
C
You can redo it next year?
B
I totally can. Yeah. I need to do it more often. Call my guy. It's not enough.
A
Sorry.
B
Not enough money. I told him that, too. Yeah. Find a painter that's not enough money. It'll feel so fun to just give him a job and. Yeah. And paint your door often. It's fun. Okay, guys, Rachel Parcel's home. This is French blue doors. We to give you one of our favorite shades of French blue. You got to know that the light is going to be hitting, hitting this. And so you really want there to be a lot of pigment. And we really love this one.
A
This is called Pool house from Sherwin Williams. And it just has, like, the prettiest tone about it. Like, it's bright enough, but it's neutral enough, brunchy enough. I just think it's a perfect shade of blue.
B
I do, too. And you could go ahead and take that onto your shutters, too, if you are doing a French house, darling. So pretty. Yeah, yeah.
A
Pool house from Sherwin Williams.
B
Fun fact. When we were doing Rachel's house, we were like, maybe, just maybe you should do red doors. And maybe it should be like Elizabeth Arden. And then she said to Drew, drew, why don't we get a set of red doors made just for holiday, and we'll take them off. Her husband's a builder, and so. So we could just take the blue doors off for holiday. Put the red doors on. So this is the red that we would have used if you are a red door girl, which is so classic.
A
I think Elizabeth Arden. Yes.
B
This is a pheromone ball color. It's called in incarnadine. Incarnadine.
A
Spell that for us.
B
I n C a R, N a D I n E. Incarnadine. It's number 248. It says our richest crimson originally takes its name from Latin, but now a much used term for crimsons and reds, red and warm tones, primer, and undercoat. Anyway, this color is just so great if you want a red door, like the best red light Incarnadine by farambal. Okay, let's give them our favorite. I'm going to take peacock because that was my old front door. Will you tell them a favorite black if you want a classic front door, much like our French modern manor right here.
A
Yeah, we would. There's, like, a lot of, like, darker blacks that are more blue or purple, and so you have to be careful. But this one from Pharaoh and ball is called off. Black number 57. So the soft black is one of the original Pharaoh and Ball colors. An uncomplicated name for a much used classic. Dark tones, primer and undercoat. So again, if you're a classic, do this, do it in gloss. It'd be so stunning.
B
Yes, this.
A
And it's warm enough too, that it's not going to feel like Hot Topic. There you go.
B
I'm going to give you my peek, my final one, which is peacock at the end. But first I want to just do a little add and jump to Dutch doors only because we think a Dutch door is really great as an exterior back door. And we have a French blue one and then we have two black ones and we just talked about French blue and black. So this first one, a French door, what do you call this in the door business? When it has a true radius top.
C
Radius top.
B
Oh, radius top. This is different than the arch top.
C
Which is an arch top is just.
B
Straight sides that go all the way up and then it's just an eyebrow across the top. So a true arch top Dutch door is the most clever, most adorable. This even has, I think, a little dog door in it. And nothing quite says back kitchen door like a Dutch door. A Dutch door is a door that's.
C
Been cut in half and then the top part swings independently from the bottom part.
B
Yeah.
A
Gorgeous.
B
So idyllic. Can you just imagine like a shady little courtyard and having that. That top open, open air and the bottom closed to the chickens running about in your yard.
C
Exactly.
A
Like Jane Kate.
B
Come in.
A
Ready?
B
Come in, darling. I'd probably call them darlings, right?
A
Darlings.
B
Yeah. And then this, it looks like it's a front door as a Dutch door because there's a mail slot in it. Black.
C
Could be a side door maybe or something.
B
You know, that's true. Anyway. Really, really cute. Black brass hardware.
A
So cute.
B
So cute.
A
And then dog is into the three. So.
B
Yes. And then this is a project we did in Texas. And this is an iron Dutch door. Yeah.
A
Which is really fun.
B
The four light.
A
I've never done one like this before. And it was just so fun because, like this was how we did all their doors was like this kind of steel iron. And this is a side door that she actually does, like use, like yell at her kids and be like, hey, guys, hop in, gotta go get in the car, whatever. And I just love that if the whole thing is glass and it's just. I think it's one of the most darling parts of this home, that Dutch door.
B
I do too.
A
Super unexpected, but yet it gets along with everything.
B
Nothing says lifestyle quite like a Dutch door. It's like you really leaned into knowing exactly how you're going to use it, and you went all the way into the detail of how to use, like.
C
Bringing some of the outside in, which, like, feels good.
B
So good.
C
I'm like, yeah, it. It just feels like you're maximizing your investment in your property. You know what I mean? Like, that's. That's square footage out there that we're now using, you know?
A
Yeah. It's kind of equal equivalent to, like, the darling casement window that you open to hear, like, the rain or to hear, like, the birds singing. I'm like, can you imagine opening up the top of the Dutch door just at springtime? You want to freshen up the house. You swing that open, and you hear birds chirping because they are migrated back.
B
Or cherry blossoms are in full bloom or whatever. Yeah.
A
Just wafting things. Anyway, the smells get a Dutch door. I'm like, 20, 25.
B
Yeah.
A
I have a Dutch door in store. You should.
B
That back kitchen door. Yeah, that's the one.
A
We use them 100.
C
That should be there.
A
Yeah. Yeah, that'd be cute. Yeah, I really like it.
B
Guys, New Year's resolutions are including new doors or new door colors. I hope you're all with us on this journey. Okay, my last paint color for you is peacock. This is, again, another pharaoh and ball color. This is called Hague blue. H a G, U, e. It's number 30. It says the strong blue takes its name from the fantastically colored woodwork much used by the Dutch. Dark tones, primer, and undercoat. Anyway, this is really beautiful. It's like, equal parts. There's a little navy, a little green, a little black. It's just like the perfect stew of a peacock, which is why I do.
A
Them ball, because they just. They don't have as many as some of the other ones. But they just perfected.
C
They've nailed them.
A
Yeah, but perfect.
B
Well, every front door that's extraordinary has great hardware on it. It's usually a really heavy door, and it's painted well in gloss like we just described. So couple of our favorite places to get hardware from great hardware sets, handsets for your entry is classic brass. Do you want to speak to this Sue?
A
Yes, I would love to. I love classic brass. This is one that we've been using for the last, like, several years because of the amount of finishes that they have.
B
Let me just quickly say, for mom and pro grandma out there, classic brass is a brand name for a door set. So when we say classic brass, we're not talking about the finish, but just as this is the company that makes really great door sets. Okay. Sorry.
A
I would say for even, like, your hardware, cabinet hardware, anything, like, classic brass, like, is fantastic because they don't just have, like, one gold. They have, like, 10 golds.
C
That's amazing.
A
They have, like, 10 nickels. They have, like, all these ones polished. Like, whatever style your home is, you can find something within the classic brass, like, whether you're classic and traditional down to your mountain home. Yeah, whatever. So I love classic brass. I love their lines, just everything about them. They do a fantastic job. Again, with the weight and with the profiling of their lovers and their knobs. I will say this. You know, this is something you should ask yourself at the dinner table between Christmas and New Year's. Ask everyone, are you a knob or are you a liver? Because I think, like, that's a really good question to ask yourself.
B
If everybody's interior designers at the table, they're gonna love this question. If y'all want to come over for dinner, we'll ask this question.
A
Yes. Because, like, there's definitely, like, a knob is so historic. And I think when you're doing any of your door hardware, I like to pick the entry first, and then I pick everything else. It's like picking your baseboard, and then you kind of understand your casing. Yeah, right. It's like one follows the other. Because, like, this is the first interaction that someone's going to have with your house. And so if I know that front door, like, what direction I want to go there, then I can know how to, like, treat the rest of my.
B
Doors, you know, really quick. Let's play a game.
A
Yeah.
B
Are you a doorknob or a lever? Sue and Corey.
A
I'm a lover.
C
I'm a knob.
B
I'm a knob.
A
Yeah.
B
I had lovers when my kids were little and my Jane was an escape artist. And little people can open the lever.
C
Oh, yeah.
B
Yeah. And we were like, where's Waldo? Where did she go? Could never find her. So I had to remember to deadbolt the back door because it was a lever. So I would say, because you have runaway trains for boys, I would at least get knobs for your exterior doors. Go wild on your interior and just have your lever fun. But they can get in anywhere.
A
Yeah, that's true.
B
But it is. I'll tell you what's nice about it. You can open the door with an elbow when your hands are full of laundry.
A
That's the thing.
B
Yeah.
A
And, like, if you are older to like, for my mom or in law with arthritis, the knob is harder to turn. And so levers are just like. I think it's the equal opportunity of, like, entrances to a. Knobs are a young person's game.
B
That's why Corey and I like so much. And you love the. As you know, Suzanne hall is an old lady.
A
I do, I do. There's just like, something so pretty about, like, that on a door. So pretty.
C
It feels like lever always feels like commercial to me.
A
Gosh.
C
I don't know why, but I mean, obviously. Honestly. Yeah, like, that's way more well designed.
B
Tell them. Tell them your favorite style from Classic Brass for the front door set.
A
I do love the Hudder system. I think it's really, really beautiful. And again, this is like, you figure out your entry set with this. I would stay, like, within that suite for the house, whether you're a knob or you're a lover. And they have, like, really beautiful ones to go with that on their stocked photography. They have, like a. I love a back plate. Oh, I love a backplate.
B
I love a back plate. We can all agree on a back plate.
A
Yes, we can.
B
What's your shape of back plate, ladies and gentlemen?
A
At the table, I'm an elongated little rectangle behind it. Not a rosette round.
B
It's true. Me too.
A
These are pictures of rosette rounds. I love just. I'm a rectangle, and then just like. It kind of just like, lines up with, like, that style of my door.
B
It lays on the style just right.
C
That's probably why I like it.
A
I love. I love that.
B
Great. Okay. So you love the Hutter. This from Classic Brass.
C
I know you just said this. Available in 37 standard finishes.
A
Fantastic. And they're all beautiful. That's crazy.
B
Do you want to sponsor our podcast? This is amazing.
A
I really, really love.
C
And this is custom finishes available. If you can't find 1 in 37, what are we doing here?
A
Yeah, I know. Yeah, but they're here for you.
B
Yeah, that's great.
A
And these are like.
B
Should we give them another favorite of yours from Classic Brass?
A
I think this one's really pretty too. That is the Shore collection. This is for, like, the cleaner, more.
B
Modern home or transitional.
A
Transitional, I think it's just, like, a really nice. I think the knobs are pretty and usually, like, within that, in addition to all the finishes, they'll have, like, 10 levers that could look really good and 10 knobs that could look really good. They have different amount of detail, so they're really great at detailing. And figuring out. So there's just so many options. It's so hard to like even hit what this company can do on a podcast. So. But this is. Yeah, those are a couple of favorites, I will say. Like when, like on entry doors, I think you should match your hinges to your hardware. Just because when that opens, I think you just see it and it's again, it's another piece of jewelry that I think is just a really nice detail to do that Special doors, I mean it will get more expensive to do high end hinges everywhere. So like there will be ones that you're gonna just like, you're just gonna.
B
Break all the rules on the front door. You're gonna show off, you're gonna strut your stuff. People are gonna think those hinges are everywhere throughout the house. They're gonna trust you went ahead and did it because you did it on the front door, you're gonna go for it. You're gonna. You're gonna spend a lot of money on that handset so that they think that's going on on the inside. So just go for it.
C
On one door we had Rob on, he was like that.
B
Oh, yeah.
C
That's the first impression of a home.
B
Is real estate expert. Yes. They want a heavy door and a really nice handset. And that's the best first impression.
C
Yep.
B
Yeah. And also if the front door is easy to find.
C
Exactly.
B
Right. Yeah.
C
We were just leading people on the right path.
B
Yeah.
A
I will say that like, if you only can afford to do classic brass or we're going to show you Rocky Mountain hardware in a second. If you can only afford to do that on the front door, do it on the front door. At least I think again to that point of like first impressions, the weight of something, it just like it gives a real solid statement to what you're about to experience. And then on the interior, like, if you need to pull the price down, M Tech is an awesome line and you can find some like really beautiful sweets and stuff that can get along with that. But like, understand like what your big hitter is going to be before you then start on your interior.
B
I was just going to say with that shore this door set. So I have mtech throughout my house. Not on the front door, but they have a really close second to this shore. So if shore is. That doesn't look like. Oh, that is a front door set. You can find something very similar in the M Tech line. So it's not probably going to come in 36 finishes, but you're gonna do your best.
C
Yeah.
B
Yeah, totally.
A
Would you love a posh nickel? Like, as far as hardware? Yeah, I love polished nickel. And if they like classic brass or rocky, they have, like, awesome golds that are, like, really pretty. And then find the next best thing for your interior if you need to pull the price down.
B
Yeah, that's great.
A
Oh, and one other tip. Okay. Your entry door, have that be nice, like, hardware also on your entry, if it's your mudroom entry or the garage door going into the house, the one that you get to interact with, that's the other one. I would say go ahead and, like, splurge for yourself to do something that you're going to be happy with with.
B
But you're probably not going to paint your garage door a color. So this will just be on your neutral ground. That is whatever all your interior door colors are. But I agree, that's going to make you feel like you're succeeding in life. Yeah. Yes.
A
Yeah, I like that. Don't forget about your entry. That's great.
B
Another favorite line from our design center would be Rocky Mountain hardware. This is another play for the front door. If you've got the right client, you're going to just use it everywhere. It's really, really amazing. This is a favorite.
A
Yeah, I love this. This is the coral rectangular push pull set. It just all their fin. Again, their finishes are beautiful. They're the sand casted, like an actual sand casted. I think in Idaho is where they're made. And they're just. The weight of them are so beautiful. And it's just. It's the real deal.
B
And the finishes.
A
Finishes are so fantastic.
B
Yeah.
A
So you can be gold. Nothing's going to be a shiny gold. Everything's going to have a little bit more of a matte cast to them. But I feel like it's a living finish, too. So it's gonna just, like, polish, like, the more you use it in those spots, which I always, always love.
B
This feels like a really good answer for our Park City homes, the big Montana homes, the Sundance. This, I mean, they have this artisan sort of character to the way that they're made, where you can tell that they're handmade by artisans. It's just lovely.
A
And if you like this look, I will just say, like, the key word you're going to look for is, like, that. Sand casting. And so Ashley Norton does sand casting for a lower price point. Emtech has a line within M Tech that does sand casting, and so that's going to give you that if you need to pull the price Down. Those are also. If you. You're like, oh, gosh, I love Rocky Mountain. I can't afford it. There are other companies that are doing it probably not within like as far as the breadth that they. Rocky Mountain does it. But they're available, so great thing to consider.
B
Yep.
A
Okay. This is the flute entry set. I think this is so pretty. Like within this back plate on this entry set, it's actually like there's like linear combing to the metal and I just think it's so pretty. It's a very subtle detail, but it's everything. It makes the.
B
Do you get so much credit for.
A
Ridiculous and you want to like, just have more detail. This flute entry set is like fantastico. I love this knob. Okay.
C
Yeah.
A
Back to knobs on this one. I love the shape of a knob. It's kind of that eggnog.
B
It's.
A
This is called their. Just their rectangular entry set. These are really boring names. I always just look at the picture and we print. We're like, put that in the schedule. That's it.
B
The egg shaped knob, I think is ergonomically more comfortable. And there's this like an elongated egg and it really does fit so nice in the hand. It's a little irregular. It feels amazing. And you can tell it's like a stone that everything has been paid attention to in this home. When you're walking through this front door and holding onto that handle.
A
I would do this on my entry. I love.
B
Yeah, you would. You're gonna put that on your green paint. Ooh, I love.
A
That's really, really cute.
B
Yeah. So good.
A
So those are a few examples.
B
Let's tell them our favorite places to get knockers and mail slots.
A
Gosh. Within all these. If you are looking at Rocky Mountain, just because I think within the finish line, if you're like going to Rocky Mountain, they do have some door knockers. They're going to be a little bit more just like stately. They're not going to be like an owl necessarily or a fox or anything like that.
B
Yeah, my fox is from Signature Hardware.
A
Yeah, I think Signature and Van Dykes and some of those ones that you see online. They do a really great job at just like still really good hardware that's a little bit more novelty, which I think feels historic and fun. And you know who you are if you want a knocker like that. So.
B
Yeah.
A
Yeah. So I would say Signature hardware is awesome. I think Anthropologie, they have their. Sometimes their mountings and their screwing stuff like is kind of A most tricky situation I've heard. But sometimes, like, they'll have some cute ones, and then I think I said Van Dykes has good ones within Rocky Mountain and classic brass. I think most of them have some type of door knocker, but they'll just be a little more stately, so I love it.
B
Etsy has some fun ones, too. Yeah. You're gonna have a blast dressing up your front door in 20, 25.
A
And this is a good hot tip. Like, if you're wanting to get one of those things and like, you're doing a new build, grab those novelties first and then match your hardware to that.
B
Oh, yes. Corey, really quick, before we leave them, will you tell them what is the best material to have your custom front door made in? I just recently painted my front door as I just shared with the people and watched the painter have to spend about a month just, you know, after he stripped my door. I have a solid wood door. It faces east. It gets morning sun. I do have a covered porch, but this thing has had cracks in it and it was a little bit warped. It's so thick and heavy, I would have thought you couldn't crack it. But it's, you know, it's a tree.
C
Yeah. So it. It's gonna move.
B
Yeah.
C
I've obviously built a ton of doors.
B
Yeah.
C
The thing about a panel inside of a door is it's not glued in. It's actually like. It's. It. You leave room in there so it can expand and contract.
B
Yeah.
C
With the seasons. So it's built to do that. But it's always. There's never enough room for it. So it's always gonna crack in places. If it's outside, you can be facing east, which is east or north is great. If you're facing south or west, you need a big overhang. You're going to get sun on that no matter what, and you're going to have to repaint it if it's real wood. So I have built and fixed a ton of doors, and I've just told myself I would never do a wood door. If it's going to be custom, it has to be, because they won't, like, you know, make a custom, like, mold for you and. And do all of that. What you can do to protect it is just do, like a really thick, you know, like a conversion varnish, some. Something like that.
B
That's what they used on mine, was a conversion varnish.
C
Yeah. And. And so that's going to protect it for, you know, probably in your case. Probably like five to seven years or something like that.
B
Yeah.
C
And then the higher the gloss, the more it's gonna like repel the sunlight.
B
So another case for high gloss doors.
A
Yes.
C
So but other than that, like, I think in my opinion, like, I'm a paint grade type of person, especially for a front door. So I, I, I like fiberglass resin. I know that's not a popular opinion. There are a lot of different styles you can get in that.
B
Is there a brand name that they should look for for a fire, fiberglass or resin front door?
C
True, True style makes sense.
B
True style has some good looking front doors. Yeah.
C
That are, that are fiberglass resin. And they're insulated well. It's, the paint will fade, but there's going to be no damage done to the door.
B
Yeah.
C
And now they make like poly jam and mole posts and all that too. So all of that doesn't have to be like real wood.
A
So probably takes the finish. Is that what you did too, so that you're consistent on your color?
C
Color, yeah.
B
Is that what you did at your house?
C
Yeah, my jam, because my door faces east as well and so it gets like all, like the morning sun and so, yeah, I, I put the, the, the poly jam and stuff on it and it's been, it's been great.
B
Yeah.
C
Yeah. It takes the finish really well. And no chipping, stuff like that.
B
So guess what Rachel Parcell's front doors are?
C
I would say that those, they're, are they wood?
A
I'm gonna say so.
B
They're metal.
C
Oh, really? Metal. Okay. Yeah.
B
Wild, huh?
C
Yeah. Yeah. So you could do custom metal doors, actually.
B
Okay.
C
Yes. Yeah. Because that's probably what I would do.
B
That's the first I had ever seen in one of our projects. And they were, they were great. It was a really good solution from her husband, who's the builder.
C
Yeah.
B
And they're probably steel, right? Shoot. Yeah.
C
Yeah, she's, she's getting a ton of sun done. Yeah.
B
And they still look amazing. But we were like, well, let's just have a second set made while you're at it and make them red.
C
And then the finish they can apply to metal is like, I mean, look at your car, you know?
B
Yeah. It's gonna be that same exact finish. Yeah. Spray it in a booth or whatever. Yeah, that's great.
A
Amazing.
B
