Yeah, I've lived in LA 16 years. But as I was talking with you before we started rolling, I've always wanted to do what you're doing right now. So I've been living vicariously through you on Next Gen. I've always wanted to be in my early 20s, living in New York City, chasing dreams, wheeling and dealing with. How does it feel to be living my former dream?

[Shy Fructor]

I mean, there's a place in New York for everyone, so I feel like you can still do it. You could still do it if you wanted to. But the twenties in New York are unbeatable. Truly unbeatable.

[Tom Schwartz]

Yeah.

[Shy Fructor]

And so you move there. You're in like, you start off in the shittiest apartment in the world. And you know there's like one and a half bedrooms for you and your friend. And you're like, who's getting the half bedroom? You know, it's like. And then you just slowly figure out your way there.

[Tom Schwartz]

And like our theme song said, those are like the best days of your life. Like, my favorite days are when I first moved here, I had no money in la. I had my roommates, our shitty little two bedroom apartment in West Hollywood. What was your first place in New York? Like a little fifth, Fifth floor walk up in Lower east side with cockroaches? Or did you. Did you have kind of a chic place?

[Shy Fructor]

No, it was. It was 5th floor walk up in Hell's Kitchen on House Kitchen. It was like 37th and 9th. And that's like. It was. It was a scary apartment. It was actually one time, I was on my way home, my roommate calls me, goes, are we having people over? Is someone staying with us? I'm like, no. I come home and there's like four suitcases in the middle of our apartment. We're like, what is. Whose is this? These, like, tourists from. I think they were from somewhere in Europe. I think they were like Belgium or something. Come in. And they're like, hello. And we're like, who are you guys? Like, this is our Airbnb for the week. This is our apartment. We live. We live here. Our landlord never took off the apartment from Airbnb. And these, they, like, overlapped with these people. So we actually had enough having, like six of them stay with us. No, I'm kidding. No, we told them, leave that.

I was hoping you embraced it and you guys lived happily ever after.

No, we were like, we need to. We need to sleep and go to work tomorrow. Get out of here. Yeah.

Because that could have easily turned into a horror story.

Oh, my God. A Belgian horror story.

But you still. You're still in your honeymoon phase with New York. Wait, you were born in Sweden, right?

I was born in Hong Kong. Hong Kong, Yes.

Which is so freaking cosmopolitan. Your family speaks Cantonese.

You say Cantonese and then my mom speaks Swedish, too? Yeah, she's a big mix. Just like a weird mix of the world.

Wait, can we do, like, a quick condense? How the hell did you end up on Bravo tv on a television show in New York City?

[Shy Fructor]

Well, I moved to the US when I was 15. And I grew up. My parents always telling me, just keep your mind open to the world and, you know, say hello to everyone and be kind to everyone and. And say yes to new experiences. So at some point in college, I moved out to LA for a little bit of work and met a friend here named Dylan. Dylan Gike. He's an awesome friend of mine. And then when I moved to New York, many years later, he hit me up and he was like, hey, I'm moving to New York. If someone reaches out to you for this project I'm doing, just hit him back. And I was like, sure. And this woman reached out to me, was like, hey, I would love to jump on a call with you and for you to meet all these people. And I jumped on a call there, had no clue what is for. And then next thing you know, this, cameras are up and we're rolling and we're.

I'm the drummer. So I started a band. This happened less than a year ago, actually, in. In October, November. My cousins and I. I live with my brother in New York. And then we have family, friends that. We're so close, who are practically cousins, and we. We've always played music together. And then one day we were like. We wrote a song again. We're like, let's record this. And then we wrote another song. We're like, let's record this. And then we're hoping to release. Start releasing stuff by the end of this month, actually.

I'm so hyped for you.

To be frank, I was too big of a. I had just gotten out of college and I was working a regular job, I guess a nine to five. I went to Florida State University.

No, I'm not. I have a lot of friends from New York that I went. One in particular, one friend who she was. Her and I were hanging out and she was one of the wildest people I've ever met. Yeah. It's a fun school.

It's a great place to grow up to go to college, matriculate, and I miss it. But would I still want to live there? No.

[Shy Fructor]

Yes.

I'm happy to be in Los Angeles, but still I yearn for New York City. That's one of my favorite things about your show in the city. For me, like, New York is just as big a character as you guys. It's like a cast member.

[Shy Fructor]

Yeah.

When I'm watching the show, for sure. What's your favorite part of New York?

[Shy Fructor]

My favorite part of New York. My favorite part is that you could literally do anything you want at any time of the day. 3:00am you want a dumpling? You'll get a great dumpling. You know, you want to go party at noon on a Tuesday. You can go party at noon on a Tuesday. You know, you want to get a job doing something, you put your mind to it, you can, you can do it. You know, you never know who you're meet too.

You never know if you want a delicious bowl of ramen at four in the morning and like a Starbucks strawberry smoothie. Yeah, it's all yours.

[Shy Fructor]

It's all yours.

Whatever you can imagine. You can get absolutely instant gratification all day, every day.

[Shy Fructor]

You're gonna move out there, though. I feel like you have like, it's it's less of. It's about the energy. You. I feel like you're literally the energy of like a 24 year old, just like us.

[Tom Schwartz]

I appreciate I have a youthful energy. You know what? My girl roasts me. Kiana. She's bi, coastal, like I was telling you before. And she always laughs because she's like, you're so not a New Yorker. She doesn't say it in a smug way. She says, I'm way too chipper and friendly and I like small talk too much. And she's like, yeah. She's like, that's why you'll never be a true New Yorker. Like, I was watching the latest episode. I think you said to your first impression, Rowan was like, you look like you're from Portland. I thought that was so funny. And I was like, being a true New Yorker, what are your first impressions of me so far?

[Shy Fructor]

I mean, you could be completely honest. I'm not a. I'm far from a junior worker. Me, myself. Right.

[Tom Schwartz]

What makes a true New Yorker?

[Shy Fructor]

That's the question. You know, at what point can I say, like, I'm a New Yorker?

[Tom Schwartz]

They say 10 years, you get your wings.

[Shy Fructor]

Okay. I'm close to halfway there. Okay. I'm coming up around like three or three and a half years now. So I've been there. But. But I mean, I feel like I've spent enough time. I don't leave New York. I never, like, I rarely leave. Like, coming to LA was like. I was like, wow, this is. There's another place outside of New York. You know, it's like kind of a breath of fresh air, but I spend my whole. All my summers there so far since living there, all my winters there. But no, the energy is great. I feel like you should. You should definitely get out there because the chipper energy, it's. It will. It's very confusing to New Yorkers, but it disarms them. It disarms them.

[Tom Schwartz]

I like, you know, I like your honesty. Yeah, I was. She was comparing me to Ned Flanders. I don't know if you ever watched the Simpsons. Yeah, he's like the hyper friendly neighbor.

[Shy Fructor]

Yeah, yeah.

And yeah, listen, I have boundaries. I'm not like, overly giddy and chipper. It's just like, I've said this so many times on the show. I feel like, have you seen Elf.

Yes.

When he first gets to New York.

Absolutely.

That's how I am every time I get there.

I mean, okay, not to like, fan a little bit, but when you were, you know, at Bravo Con I saw you walking around. I was like, that's. Everyone was like, that's Tom Schwartz. You were walking around, like, kissing babies. I was like, like, you know, you were like. You were kind of talking to town for a bit. I was like, that guy seems chill.

You know, I'm cool in one little niche, one world, maybe. I. I don't know if you ever watched Vanderpump, but we have, like, a couple restauran Tom, Tom Schwartz, and Sandy's that went up in flames. RIP but, like, I'm cool in my little pockets, but, you know, I'm not global. I'm not cool.

What is it? Every two years in Vegas? That's our. That's our moment.

Yes. Next year, we're gonna have another moment next year. Did you love bravocon, dude? It must have been so exhilarating your first time.

Listen, I loved it so much, but, you know, we took our New York energy to Vegas and we were out until, like, 6 in the morning with 7am Panels. And I remember, like, one of our. Because we were filming while we were at BravoCon, too. Yes.

I popped into a scene. I don't know if you remember. I think I popped.

And I felt like, I hope they keep that in there because you walk in and. And you're like, what's up? And the moment you leave, all hell breaks loose.

At that dinner, I felt the tension.

It's funny, you know, I feel like today, when it comes, you know, to this kind of, like, reality show stuff, there's a lot more rules and expectations, and I feel like we're all kind of like, at that boundary of, like, I'm about to break this rule and expectation. But, you know, like on that episode with Riley with that glass, you know, she picked it up and she put it back down. You know, this is. You know, it's not. It's not early 2000s, that's not going flying, but she, you know, there's still that moment that's right thing.

Back in the. It was like kind of the Wild west in the early days of Vanderpump rules. Like 2000, 13, 14, 15. It kind of felt like there was no rules and we didn't have the feedback loop. You guys get instant criticism, you know, right away how people feel about you. We didn't know, like, Twitter was barely around, and Instagram was just starting in the early days. So it's like we weren't positively or negatively reinforced. You know what I mean?

Absolutely.

How you feel about, like, your first experience getting, like, lovers and haters?

[Shy Fructor]

I. I mean, you know, you gotta. Everyone says, don't read the comments and like that, but it's hard not to. And then you read them and you're like, am I. Re. Am I. Are they. Are they right or are they wrong?

[Tom Schwartz]

You know, you look in the mirror,

you're like, do I. You know, do I look. Yeah, I. All. All sorts of stuff, you know, and it's. It's just like. It's. Someone called me a nothing burger on one time, and I was like, what? A nothing burger? I'm a too much burger?

You're something. No, you're too much. In the best possible way.

Yes. That's why. That's why. I hope that's what my mom says.

You got to have that kind of outgoing personality. I feel like I've always had that. So I've always gotten a little bit of that criticism from friends and whatever critiques are just like, maybe you're too much of a personality. But, you know, you gotta learn to just, like, say it and just be whoever you want to be.

Dude, you're great. You seem perfectly comfortable being yourself. You don't seem like you're trying to perform or be someone else.

Seeing how you guys are all just starting your own businesses and getting life going in New York City. Like, do you guys. Like, do you. Can you appreciate how iconic Brooke Shields is?

And then two years later, I was dating this girl, and I really wanted to impress her and just show her that I can do something and, like, wanted. And I always had this. I kind of hope to, like, start something with clothing at some point, and I just did it.

That's just in you. You think it was born. It's in your DNA, or did you have, like.

Honestly, no.

An epiphany, just like you said. You just had a moment.

Okay. I say, I just moved to New York. I met you. I'm also pursuing fashion. I'm 24, 25, and I want to go out for my first time in New York. And you want to make a good impression. Where would you take me?

Oh, honestly, that's. That's a great question. I feel like we. We definitely start the night off in a nice bar, in a fun bar. You know, go anywhere from Doc Holidays, which is like the divi. Sport you can get to. I know something a little bit nicer. Bar Picciolino is a really nice place. And then from there the nights, you know, the worlds are always there. 151 is a great place to go out. You know, can always go out to different listening bars, go out to different, like, lounges. And then from there, you know, let's go to Brooklyn and just have a night out there.

I love Brooklyn.

We can always go to the Box, but like, you know, we don't. Do we want to go out there? I don't know.

I've been twice and I've seen things that I. Unspeakable things. And if you. So for people who don't know, the Box is kind of an avant garde, risque burlesque show. Like a hypersexual burlesque show. When I went. I don't know if I've ever. I don't know if you guys are ready for this, whoever's listening. Like, when I went, it's very avant garde. Like there was this performer and she was half naked, but she would put obviously bio safe fluids in her rectum and she would squirt them out from her orifice onto the whiteboard. And she did this beautiful painting. And it was. I know it sounds kind of lewd over the top, but it was kind of in the moment. When you're in that space, it felt like art. It's. I. Maybe I sound full of. Right. Is.

There's always new places that pop up. There's one club that just opened up called Gosh. That I like only the coolest people. I know when I say coolest people, I mean, like, you got in There, it's very artsy, very cool. And I just, I've been trying to find my way in there. So gosh, if you're listening, let me in there.

Gosh, better let my boy shine there or else we're going to break that fucking door down.

Wade, I saw you performing. We talked about this earlier. Your first stand up bit. Did you do open mic night or have you been slowly building a routine for your stand up bit?

[Shy Fructor]

When I was in college, this was my junior year of college, I had a really light schedule one semester and, and I had a lot of free time and my bunch of my friends were like in class a lot more than I was and I was like, what am I going to do with my time? And I, for some reason I looked up open mic night near me and I secretly started going to these open mic nights in Boston without telling anyone. Didn't tell anyone. So cool. It was so fun.

[Tom Schwartz]

That's so cool.

[Shy Fructor]

And, and then from there I just like really started enjoying it. And then I, my senior year, I like all of that summer, junior year and then into senior year, I just started doing different shows around New York and I ended up doing like something called the Industry Room, which is kind of an audition. And I just did a bunch of shows from there. And then one day I woke up, was like, I'm done with that. I'm done with that.

[Tom Schwartz]

You hit a wall. It showed its purpose.

[Shy Fructor]

Yeah, it didn't go anywhere, you know, it wasn't like, it was like meant to go anywhere. It was just truthfully, like an outlet to just like say my most outrageous thoughts. And it'd be like, oh, that's comedy. That's okay to say, you know, Like, I was like, I had funny things, I think funny things to say.

[Tom Schwartz]

It's a great confidence builder especially. You don't seem like a shy guy. You seem very confident and sure of yourself, but in a great way. Not in a cocky way. You just seem like you're very much in tune with yourself. But if you're not and you're listening, I think it's a great way to break out of your shell. If you're introverted or you get stage fright or performance anxiety, get up there. Don't be afraid to bomb. I want to go out and bomb one night in la.

[Shy Fructor]

It's funny, you know, like when you do an open mic night, it's typically other standup comedians. If it's not a show, then it's an Open mic night. And if it's open mic night, it's typically mostly other comedians there, they don't laugh at your jokes. Other comedians stand up, comedians won't laugh at your joke. So you'll be up there doing five minutes and no, not, not get a single laugh. And then show crickets and then we do a show in front of people that, you know, don't want to be comedians and don't do it for their, you know, their hobbies or their living. You get a lot of laughs and it's just like so interesting. They just don't laugh. So you, like, you just, you. It's so, it's fast. It's a fascinating industry. It's a fascinating world in there.

[Tom Schwartz]

So anyone who was thinking about trying it, you just scared them away.

[Shy Fructor]

So, no, it's honestly the moment you do it, the moment you make a first joke and no one laughs, you have like the most liberty. Like, it's like the most like, freeing moment ever.

[Tom Schwartz]

Comedians talk about this all the time. It's somehow, I guess, incredibly liberating just to go up and bomb.

[Shy Fructor]

Absolutely.

[Tom Schwartz]

And maybe even get a boo. Yeah, not so much of like a literal boo, but just you can feel them not enjoying it. I think it builds character.

[Shy Fructor]

You know, it's funny. Like in the first episode this season of Next Gen, there was a birthday party for Amira and it was like a country themed spelled C U N T R Y. And Amira is like the most fabulous girl in the world. She's, you know, she's fantastic. She's so cool. She's a badass through and through. And she had like this kind of sexy country themed birthday party. And I was like, listen, I'm. What am I gonna do? Someone has to dress up as a horse for this. I dress up in a horse costume and a lot of them kind of like, you know, made fun of me in a good way, in a funny way, whatever. But it was very humbling. You know, I feel like everyone at least once a year should go out in a horse costume and just humiliate, humiliate yourself.

Just put yourself way outside your comfort zone.

Go and get laughed at. Just go and remember what it's like to be human.
