It's now time for your weekly detox with Tom Schwarz.
Kristen Doute
You guys, what is up? Welcome to another episode of Detox Retox. First of all, thank you for all the love and feedback last week. So nice sitting down with Katie. Just catching up a little mindful micro dose nature's Adderall. This week we're talking pregnancy cravings. Yes, going to get into it with my very pregnant friend, friends, fiance, stars of the Valley, Kristen Doute and Luke Broderick. I think I'm going to call this episode Shavings and Cravings Taking the edge off Pregnancy. I'm not going to mince words. Probably my biggest insecurity in life right now being a 42 year old man is not having kids. I mean I have a great wealth of friends, family, a good support system, shout out to the dogs Gordo and Butters, my fur babies. But like when I see my friends taking their kids to Disneyland to experience it vicariously through their eyes, I mean I get jealous. I'm a little jealous. I just like I saw this TikTok this morning and it was like there's a version of you ten years from now that's begging current you me to just enjoy savor where you're at right now. And I am, I'm happy. But I want kids. Do you guys want kids? Are you thinking about having kids? It's gotta be one of the most beautiful experiences we can have here on this planet. Some might even argue, at least from like a biological standpoint, the meaning of life. I think other people might be a little offended by that because I know a lot of people personally who don't want to have kids. But humans are meaning making creatures and there's plenty of other ways to live a fulfilled life and I respect that. But yeah, I want kids. My God, I come from a pretty big family My dad has eight of them. You guys, eight. Two marriages. Three in one, five in the other. My mom. My sweet, dear mama. I love you. If you're listening, she had triplets. Can you imagine anyone who's given birth out there, can you imagine tripling that? My God, she should get a medal. She should honestly get a medal. Mom, I love you, but yeah. Yeah. In a life that's sort of riddled with uncertainty, it's one thing I know I can handle. One thing I know I'll be good at. I know I'll be a good dad. And I can't wait to have a family of my own. You know what I'm saying? Just rocking an empathy belly with my babe. My baby to be. Yeah. In terms of cravings, I think it's common knowledge that your hormones go a little crazy. Your sense of smell and taste is heightened when you're pregnant. You know, with a quick Google or chat GPT search, you can find out why. But like, sometimes you guys, sometimes it's just nice to hear it from someone who has dedicated their life to this. An expert, a human being. Not that AI you guys, AI. If you're listening, it's not a dig at you, please don't reflect this on my record when you take over, but I thought it'd be nice to hear for someone who's dedicated their life to this. So without further ado, here is Dr. Sterling, fellow of the American College of obstetricians and gynecologists, M.D.ob gyn the venerable, the very kind Dr. Noah Sterling on why women get cravings when they're pregnant.
Dr. Noah Sterling
I'm Dr. Sterling. Let's talk about food cravings and aversions during pregnancy, which affect between 50 to 90% of pregnant individuals. While we know that hormonal changes create the conditions for cravings and aversions, two main theories attempt to explain why they occur. The first is the nutritional deficiency theory. This widely held explanation suggests that cravings are your body's way of addressing specific nutritional needs. For example, craving ice cream might indicate a need for calcium or meat cravings could signal protein or iron deficiency. While this theory is intuitive and certainly popular, scientific evidence supporting it remains inconclusive. There's actually no clinical data to support support it. The second explanation is the evolutionary protection theory. This theory proposes that food aversions and cravings may serve as a protective mechanism to prevent the consumption of potentially harmful substances in pregnancy. Foods commonly avoided during pregnancy often have strong smells and include eggs, meat, fish and spicy foods. One of the most interesting Types of pregnancy cravings is pica, the craving for non food substances. Pica occurs in approximately 28% of pregnancies globally and manifests in three main geophagy, craving soil or clay, amylophagy, craving raw starches like flour and pagophagy craving ice. Pica or pica, especially craving ice, shows compelling evidence of association with iron deficiencies. Similar connections exist between other forms of pica and deficiencies in zinc and calcium. If you're experiencing unusual cravings, especially for non food items, discuss them with your healthcare provider. While most pregnancy cravings are normal and temporary, pica behaviors warrant medical attention to address potential deficiencies and avoid risks.
Kristen Doute
Luke and Kristin, newly minted fiancees. Parents to be on the edge of motherhood, maybe madness. What the fuck is going on, guys?
Tom Schwarz
Motherhood, madness. I like it.
Kristen Doute
You guys, thank you so much for doing this, by the way. I imagine, like, I wasn't about to ask you to come to a studio.
Tom Schwarz
My house is more fun.
Kristen Doute
It's so much more fun. So, you guys, if there's a little ambient noise, you know, give us some grace because we're at the crib.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah, but ambient. You mean my dog's barking like crazy at the crib?
Luke Broderick
Next to the crib.
Tom Schwarz
To be.
Kristen Doute
Yeah. You guys. Kristen, your belly is about to burst.
Tom Schwarz
I know.
Kristen Doute
I thought it'd be fun to, like, do a little deep dive into exactly what it's like to be pregnant. You're 31 weeks in. Yes.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah. So, like, as I'm like, chowing on, this is chowing on. All the cravings, that craving busters that Tom brought me, I thought it'd be.
Kristen Doute
Fun for, like, prospective mothers, prospective fathers, mothers to be people like me who will never know the great joy, the pain, the suffering that comes with giving birth to a child. What it's like to be exactly 31 weeks pregnant.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah, it's pretty wild. I was thinking about it this morning because I was like, I. I say a lot, like, I can't wait to not be pregnant anymore because it hasn't been like, like, okay, risk versus reward. Reward is much higher. Right. Like, I say I wouldn't do it again, but I would do it again. And then I'm like, I hate being pregnant. But then I think about not being pregnant, and I'm like, that's so weird.
Luke Broderick
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
It's arguably the greatest gift of life. You know, I know the experience of being a mother, the profound joy of nurturing your child, bringing something into this world, but, like, not to be. Like, not to be Flippant. But do you ever get bored?
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
Do you get bored?
Tom Schwarz
I do.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
Definitely get bored. I get. I was getting bored more that, like, now that I'm really tired all the time.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
It's hard to get bored because I just go to sleep.
Kristen Doute
Yeah. Can you give us, like, a micro dose of your daily routine? Like, you wake up.
Tom Schwarz
I don't sleep anymore. I don't sleep. Sleep like a full eight hours at night because you have to get up and pee like, every five to 10 minutes.
Kristen Doute
Yeah. What aches really hard?
Tom Schwarz
My ribs, My back, my neck. My back.
Kristen Doute
We know the rest of the song.
Tom Schwarz
Hopefully I don't rip from punani to crack, so hopefully we leave half of that out.
Kristen Doute
Wait, Luke, where the is your empathy belly?
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
You were supposed to bring it.
Kristen Doute
I was. I got one on Amazon and it was like a cheap knockoff. I was like, it's 50 bucks. That seems like a really good deal. I didn't do any research, and it was a little plastic inflatable belly. And I think I'm gonna go leave my first one star review on Amazon.
Luke Broderick
You could just send it back.
Kristen Doute
That thing was not evoking empathy. If anything, it made me. Yeah. Again, flipping. I was like, I could totally give birth. This isn't so bad.
Tom Schwarz
I want to do the saran wrap. Strap like a watermelon to Luke's body.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
And then like two. I don't know, big grapefruits or something. Something. Two melons, like, heavy for the boobs.
Luke Broderick
Bring it on. I'll add it to my workout.
Tom Schwarz
And you think that I'll wear them to the gym?
Luke Broderick
Bet me I won't.
Tom Schwarz
All the. That's like the hardest part is just the weight. All of the weight.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
It's like a weighted beach ball.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
Just like stapled to the front of me.
Luke Broderick
So how many. How many hours do I have to last?
Tom Schwarz
Yeah. See?
Kristen Doute
Do you sleep on your side?
Tom Schwarz
Have to.
Kristen Doute
Do you do, like. Do you do belly belly dancing or you baby yoga or anything like that?
Tom Schwarz
No, I work out with our friend Jenna.
Kristen Doute
Yeah. Shout out to Jenna Willis.
Tom Schwarz
We try to do two days a week. It depends on the pains if I can do that or not. But it was. It has been really helpful to work out with her. I wish we had started sooner. I wish I had started sooner.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
In my pregnancy. So if we do whenever we get to do this again, when we go for round two, I will definitely make sure I'm working out pre pregnancy during pregnancy because it has been really helpful. But yeah, I Get bored sometimes. What's really the thing is I'm in like a sweet spot now because she moves and she kicks.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
So that's like it. You can't be bored when that's happening. Like, it's so cool.
Luke Broderick
It's amazing. That part is. It truly is so rewarding when you finally can see and feel the kicks.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
You know, we've seen that it happening in the ultrasounds, but we never hadn't felt it until what, two weeks ago.
Tom Schwarz
No, three. No, eight weeks ago was the first.
Luke Broderick
Time that I could feel it or you started feeling it.
Tom Schwarz
I started feeling.
Luke Broderick
But yeah, you just got tuned into what it felt like inside of you.
Tom Schwarz
Right.
Luke Broderick
Not to feel it on the outside.
Tom Schwarz
Like about 20 to 23 weeks was the first time I felt it.
Luke Broderick
Right. But it's only been, I feel like a handful of weeks that we can feel it on the outside that I can feel it.
Kristen Doute
What's the baby listening to? How many times? Wait, I'll ask. This one's for the baby, actually. Baby, how have you been feeling about the Slim Shady lp?
Tom Schwarz
Loves.
Kristen Doute
How many times has she listened to that?
Tom Schwarz
She's. Oh, not that many. We have a playlist, but there's like this really this random song that my brother, like, sent me and it's like some EDM situation. Yeah, I'm just looking for the name of it for shits and giggles for pregnant people out there. It's called Brazilian Soul and it's by the Knox featuring Sophie Tucker.
Kristen Doute
Oh, I love Sophie Tucker.
Tom Schwarz
Okay, so that's who he told me to listen to. And then so he sent me the song called Brazilian Soul Soul. And it's kind of like this bossa nova, like type of jam. And I played it for her and she was kicking a lot. And then I've been playing a lot of Jacob Collier lately and I know love him so much.
Kristen Doute
Luke, you curating any music for the baby?
Tom Schwarz
Like symphonies. And I want to play. Start playing like a lot of orchestra type music because she hears what we listen to all the time, which is.
Kristen Doute
Mostly country, hopefully not reruns of Vanderpump Rules.
Luke Broderick
No, no, she has not heard one of those.
Tom Schwarz
Nope. But she never will.
Luke Broderick
She has definitely heard some Tom Petty, some Red Hot Chili Peppers. She's heard some good classic rock music.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah, all the good goods.
Kristen Doute
She. She is going to be Kristen Doty's baby. You know what I mean?
Luke Broderick
Broderick's baby.
Kristen Doute
Do you ever. And yes. Do you ever think, like one day she's going to go back all Right. I actually. I have a hypothetical for you.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
She's. Let's just say. All right, guys, close your eyes. She's 16 years old.
Luke Broderick
I already don't like this.
Kristen Doute
She's. She's thriving. A student, but she gets caught smoking in the girls room. And you know what? You're.
Tom Schwarz
You're.
Kristen Doute
You're a constructive, loving mommy, but you have to reprimand her.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
And she's like, mom, I'm gonna stop you right there. I've seen you on Vanderpump Rules, I think season three, maybe episode 13, Miami Girl, you're chief in cigarettes on the patio, telling Diana to suck a dick.
Tom Schwarz
What? Will you tell her that that was all fake? No, I'm just kidding. She's gonna do it. She's gonna do all sorts of crazy, and she's gonna have to. To know that it sucks. She's gonna have to, like, hit a cigarette. I mean, hopefully she never actually does because smoking's so out now.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
And smoking was. Has been in for, like, the first, you know, 20, 30 years of my life to be real.
Luke Broderick
It's gonna be a vape.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
It'll be a baby. It'll be a cigarette.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
But. But, like, if she has to try something to hate it or get sick from it, to know firsthand, then, like, that's fine. Fine.
Kristen Doute
Yeah. It's just a trip to me that someday our kids are going to be watching reruns of Vanderpump Rules and the Valley shout out to season two. Oh, my God, the Valley.
Luke Broderick
They will. Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
When she's, like, 30.
Luke Broderick
No, but that's how old we were when we did this, so that's always our comeback. It's like, you're 16. We were 30.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
You can do whatever you want when you hit. You know, when you go do your own thing.
Tom Schwarz
I just. I stand by. There's no better person, the face of this planet, to parent a small Kristen Doty than me. I know exactly what to do and what not to do. It will just come back to me.
Luke Broderick
Other than me.
Tom Schwarz
Right, Right.
Luke Broderick
Because I handle adult Kristen Dodi.
Tom Schwarz
Yes, exactly. That's why we're a perfect match, babe.
Kristen Doute
Yeah. How you doing over there, Luke?
Luke Broderick
I'm good.
Kristen Doute
Apprehensive. How you feeling about fatherhood?
Luke Broderick
Yeah, babe, I'm ready for Kristen to not be pregnant anymore, too.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
Because I'm such a gleeful, gleeful, blissful butterfly.
Kristen Doute
We're gonna get into what you're craving specifically, but, like, emotionally. What are you craving emotionally right now?
Tom Schwarz
31 weeks in, I want Luke to, like, instead of me giving him a honey do list, I want him to do things with me and read her mind. Well, clearly.
Luke Broderick
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
Is that too much to ask?
Tom Schwarz
I know. I feel like we're 31 weeks in. Babe, you haven't figured it out by now?
Luke Broderick
Okay, I. Yes, I figured it out that I have to read your mind. And I do my best just because.
Tom Schwarz
I had a good 10 weeks of being not crazy. We both know that come third trimester, I. I've said this on the podcast. I've said this to my friends. I keep hearing third trimester, things get kind of shitty again. Like, you start getting sad again or, like, irritable or something cranky. I was like, man, I don't think that's going to be me. Because. Because I have been so good lately. I feel great. Even though I'm achy, like, mentally, I feel great. Like, I'm feeling life. Like, we're vibing, like, you're glowing. So I feel like I. Yeah, I did my due diligence. My first 20 weeks of just being, like, an emotional wreck and making Luke's life a living hell and not understanding, like, where did the me and the me go? Like, he's like, kristen, I don't even know who you are right now. And I'm like, I don't. I don't know either. So, anyway, I really thought that we were, like, on this trajectory to just, like, happiness. Like, this is how it was going to be from now on. Super happy. And I've been cranky the last few days.
Kristen Doute
Luke, on a scale from 1 to 10, what are we talking here?
Luke Broderick
Oh, this isn't, like. This is not a 10 by any means. I think we were cruising along at, like, below a five. It was nice.
Kristen Doute
That seems so reasonable.
Luke Broderick
And then now it's like, it's. I think the highest it's gotten is, like, a 7.7.5. It hasn't gotten that bad yet.
Tom Schwarz
Okay.
Kristen Doute
Okay. Not off the Richter, but, like, I.
Tom Schwarz
Kind of wanted to, like, split your Achilles sentence today because you went, so, hey, are you working out with Jenna this week? And I'm like, my back hurts. I don't know. And he's like, well, because you're usually in a better mood when you do. I'm like, I didn't say anything. I just started breathing like this and, like, stomping.
Kristen Doute
She gets that twinkle in her eye.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
We've known each other, what, 15 years? I know your looks.
Luke Broderick
Yeah, well, didn't it bring you out of the Spiral you're kind of going into. You're like, nothing's done yet. The baby. The baby room's not gonna be here, and I'm gonna be giving birth tomorrow. Like, you were doing that. And then I'm like, hey, are you.
Kristen Doute
Working out, by the way, Guys, I just got a tour of the. The soon to be nursery. Super cute. I saw the vision board.
Tom Schwarz
Vision board.
Kristen Doute
How did you describe it? Ethereal? Whimsical.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
Feminine.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah. Not feminine.
Luke Broderick
Creative.
Kristen Doute
Creative. Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
I don't like pink. I'm not like a pink person. I'm not like, girl, make it girly. I hate that. She's not going to be, like, a girly girl. I don't think she. I want her to be cool, do stunts and play the drums, but, like, also do ballet and, like, play the piano, but go golfing and, like, wrestle sharks or something.
Kristen Doute
Besides his beautiful blue eyes, what attributes do you want the baby to get from Luke?
Tom Schwarz
His athleticism.
Kristen Doute
Yeah, for sure.
Tom Schwarz
Not mine.
Kristen Doute
He's really good at pig.
Tom Schwarz
Just like.
Kristen Doute
Yeah, he's got. He's. Yeah, he got game.
Tom Schwarz
His balance.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
His. Well, we're both tall.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
And like, his metabolism. Yeah, for sure.
Kristen Doute
How about from you? Your detective skills, obviously.
Tom Schwarz
Of course. My creativity. I want her to be musically inclined, like me.
Luke Broderick
I prefer she's your voice over mine. I'm not much of a singer.
Tom Schwarz
Yes, definitely.
Luke Broderick
Yet 100.
Tom Schwarz
Luke wants to be a country star.
Luke Broderick
Oh, don't put that in this.
Kristen Doute
You look like a country star.
Luke Broderick
You can't announce that yet.
Tom Schwarz
Okay.
Luke Broderick
I got to work on my voice first.
Kristen Doute
You look like. By the way, Luke, how's it. How's it been so far? Becoming kind of famous, recognizable. First season of a TV show under your belt. Going in hot to season two. What's it like? When do you do, Dig. When people come up to you and they're like, what's up? I love you on the show. Can I get a selfie?
Luke Broderick
I actually don't. Like. There are places I go and I expect it, and it's like, not a big deal, but I felt like I lost my sanctuary in Colorado when someone noticed me at a bar, and I'm like, no, this was my safe place.
Kristen Doute
That's a canon moment for being on television, I think. Yeah.
Luke Broderick
I'll put it this way. I didn't watch much of season one, so if anything, I don't know. It's still an adjustment to me. I understand what's happening, but I can't tell you that it's excitement that I'm feeling.
Kristen Doute
Yeah. But not dread.
Luke Broderick
No, it's not dread. It's not dread. But like anything there's good and bad that comes with it, right?
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
And I feel like specifically in this world, year to year, it can be more of one or the other.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
So it's like I'm cautious, very cautious going into this.
Tom Schwarz
I'll say from my perspective. And Tom, I know you agree, like, it's so nice when people say, oh my God, I relate so much to what, what you like, publicly said and did on tv. And thank you for being open and vulnerable because, like, my friend went through the same thing, or my sister, my brother, whoever. And it's just so fulfilling to know that it wasn't all just for bullshit and entertainment at times, especially when you're like bleeding out. Right?
Kristen Doute
That's beautifully said. I was just in Chicago this past weekend, shout out to Joy District, and I was doing appearance, and this, this woman came up, this beautiful woman. She told me that she just beat cancer and that our show Vanderpump Rules helped her get through some of the darker moments. And I teared up and I gave her the biggest hug. And those, those moments are really beautiful because sometimes you're like, what am I? I'm not contributing enough to society? What am I doing with my life? I'm on a reality television show. And then you hear that and it's very validating.
Tom Schwarz
Absolutely.
Kristen Doute
Yeah, it's very valid. Oh, yeah, you guys, by the way, we're at the crib, so just ignore the ambient sounds. We got a table full of snacks. What do we got here, Dodie?
Tom Schwarz
Oh my God.
Kristen Doute
We got.
Tom Schwarz
Okay, let's just talk about the dill.
Kristen Doute
Pickle flavored pretzels, the theme of this episode. You guys, what are you craving and why are you craving it? Kristen? Dodie.
Tom Schwarz
My number one thing was ice. And Luke and I opened up the door to a package that contained a freaking nugget ice machine.
Kristen Doute
You're welcome, Tom.
Tom Schwarz
I can never repay you, you guys. I don't even know how.
Kristen Doute
So we got. So you said, you said you told me three things. Top three things, in no particular order.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
Pretzel rods, ice and frozen McDonald's. Coca Cola.
Tom Schwarz
So that's my number one.
Kristen Doute
Have you ever heard of Pica P I C A?
Tom Schwarz
No.
Kristen Doute
So it's like a condition and where your body, your body has unusual cravings. I guess it has to do with a lack of specific nutrients sometimes and everything. Yeah, that can happen when you're pregnant. Sometimes it's referred. It's It's a byproduct of iron that.
Tom Schwarz
Caused the ice chewing.
Kristen Doute
Yes. So like, apparently chewing the ice alleviates your body's craving for the iron deficiency. Yeah. Does that make sense?
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
For red meat.
Tom Schwarz
Right? Well, because I am very iron deficient, for sure. I take iron supplements, but it's still not enough because I don't eat meat. And I love chewing ice.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
But nugget ice is like next level. That's like top tier ice.
Kristen Doute
You're welcome. It's the least I could do for making you do this. I appreciate the love.
Tom Schwarz
I love this.
Kristen Doute
What smells or sounds like give you the ick or drive you crazy?
Tom Schwarz
I'm trying to think. There have been smells that have really bothered me and I just can't think of what they are now. I'm glad I'm not the pregnant person who like craves dirt or like paint chips or things like that.
Kristen Doute
My strange addiction. Love that show.
Tom Schwarz
It's like really a thing. I mean, even Amy, my best friend, she said that her mom, she did not partake in eating dirt, but she did crave dirt. Like, it was like she wanted it so bad. It's such a strange, odd thing that you've never even had. Right? Like, what? What? But it happens to pregnant people.
Luke Broderick
Huh. I'm pretty sure I've had dirt before.
Tom Schwarz
I do. I have craved, I guess, sugar, which I only call it a craving because when I'm not pregnant, I don't eat dessert. I don't eat chocolate cookies, like anything like that. And I've yet to find a cookie I would turn down during this pregnancy.
Luke Broderick
I 100 concur with that. Your sweet, sweet tooth has appeared.
Tom Schwarz
Cheesecake. Oh, me up.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
Cheesecake is a specific one that she is.
Tom Schwarz
I could eat a whole piece of cheesecake and then like want to vomit. But it's so good.
Kristen Doute
It's so fascinating to me how your body just craves certain things while you're pregnant.
Tom Schwarz
It's really weird.
Kristen Doute
I went down the rabbit hole the other day. Yeah. So I'm just curious to what it. What it's like from your pov.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah, it's. I don't know, it's interesting. Like, it's much more fun being pregnant later in the pregnancy because then you're not just like bloated or fat looking. It's like, you know, I'm pregnant. I can feel her. I know she's inside of me. Like, it. Like we have a thing. She can hear us talk. Like it's pretty cool. But like, early pregnancy is just boring. You just feel like you throw up, you're fat.
Kristen Doute
Do you feel like you have a good form of non verbal communication with your baby right now?
Tom Schwarz
I mean, she hears everything I say do. She hears my heartbeat. She's literally like a part of me.
Kristen Doute
Me. Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
And I. I'm just now starting to feel. To get like a little emo. But to feel like, oh, when once I give birth, like I can't protect her anymore. That's pretty wild.
Kristen Doute
That's where you come in, Luke.
Luke Broderick
Exactly.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah. Because like right now I. It's like she's protected, she's chilling.
Luke Broderick
Well, 24 7.
Tom Schwarz
Right.
Luke Broderick
It's like, yeah, you can't. That's what I mean, 24 7. But we can know where she is 247 for the first X amount of years of her life.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
Bed and air tag into her at birth.
Luke Broderick
No, I. I veto that one.
Kristen Doute
How many strangers have touched your belly in the past week? Do you let strangers touch your belly?
Tom Schwarz
I don't know if any strangers have ever touched my belly.
Luke Broderick
No. It's pretty off limits.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
I felt like at the premiere party somebody. I saw somebody touch your belly and you just like. It was quick, but it wasn't like a stranger. Everyone like inner circle. Most part there's not like inner circle friends. You know what I mean?
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah. And it is kind of weird. Like now I get it because as a not pregnant person, I would want to do that too. But now I'm like, you guys realize like she's not kicking when I'm walking around. Right? Like she doesn't.
Kristen Doute
She doesn't perform on command.
Tom Schwarz
No. Yet it's like you're. She's being rocked to sleep.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
When I'm walking, like she's constantly moving. So when people just want to touch it, I'm like, you're just touching me kind of weird.
Kristen Doute
So you have healthy boundaries.
Luke Broderick
How would you feel if someone touched your stomach in that place when you're not pregnant?
Tom Schwarz
When you're not pregnant. Oh my God. Could you imagine?
Kristen Doute
Don't you dare touch my belly.
Tom Schwarz
Like, yeah, don't touch my mama.
Luke Broderick
Tom, get over here.
Tom Schwarz
Meant the other day too. Do you know where dad bought originated? It's because when a woman's pregnant, most men not all gain like some. It's not sympathy weight, but there's something.
Kristen Doute
Empathy weight. I've heard of this. Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
Thing about men gaining weight. Except for Luke. When a woman's pregnant. And that's dad bod.
Kristen Doute
Where's the dad bod? Luke? You're looking real fit over there. I don't like it real defined. Yeah.
Luke Broderick
You know, I think it's this metabolic issue I might have.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
I mean, maybe I should have my thyroid checks because I can't put fat on you guys.
Kristen Doute
I. You're both. This is for both of you guys. Like, I know you're still in the trenches, like maybe 8ish more weeks to go. Is there is. What do you think you're gonna miss again? I know you're in the trenches, but what. What parts do you think you'll miss being pregnant?
Tom Schwarz
I think I'm actually gonna miss, like, my weird pregnant body. I think it's gonna be really weird to just not be anymore.
Kristen Doute
It's a beautiful thing.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
Sleeping, probably.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah. I don't sleep now, though.
Luke Broderick
Yeah, you don't. But I think and I've heard that.
Tom Schwarz
Like, I heard that newborn sleep is way better than pregnant sleep. Huh.
Kristen Doute
So I'm like, hey, that sounds like fake news.
Luke Broderick
I sleep really well right now.
Kristen Doute
Yeah, he does enjoy it while it lasts, Luke.
Tom Schwarz
Well, Luke can fall asleep. Like, he gets. He's like, I'm tired. I'm going to bed. He gets in bed, closes his eyes, and he's out like a light.
Luke Broderick
It's a superpower.
Kristen Doute
That is a superpower.
Tom Schwarz
And I don't think that superpower is going to go away once the baby's here. So you might just not have it that bad.
Luke Broderick
Well, I'm. I've been really good at napping in the times of my life when I don't get as much sleep, like, with my work schedule. Kind of throws it off, you know?
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
And I'm good at a power nap.
Kristen Doute
I took a nap today. It's rare, a rare treat. Not like I'm Mr. Too Busy for Naps, but it's just not in me. It's not innate.
Tom Schwarz
Do you feel tired when you wake up?
Kristen Doute
I felt heavenly.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
How long was your nap divine? 30 minutes.
Luke Broderick
Perfect.
Tom Schwarz
That's what I mean.
Kristen Doute
That's the sweet spot.
Luke Broderick
20 to 30 minutes is the sweet spot.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
How long does it take you to fall asleep?
Kristen Doute
Maybe like 10 minutes.
Tom Schwarz
Wow.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
I am so in a chair.
Kristen Doute
It was in my bed.
Luke Broderick
Okay. I don't do bed naps. Bed naps are dangerous.
Kristen Doute
I had, like a weird. This. This is fresh, so forgive me. I'm trying to articulate. I had, like a weird sort of amalgam version of what season 12 might have been had we filmed another season on Vanderpump. Rules.
Tom Schwarz
Rules.
Kristen Doute
It was just like Montages. I couldn't tell you anything specific, and it kind of made me nostalgic. When I woke up, I felt like we had. Although I've, I'm at a place where I've made peace with the show being over. Yeah, I'm well past that. I feel like it's the right decision.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
By the way, how did you, how did you feel when you heard the show was going to be filming its last season? Vanderpump Rules wasn't coming back.
Tom Schwarz
I thought and wanted you guys to have one more. Even if it was a shorter season. I wanted there to be some kind of resolution. Even though it was never going to be fully resolved. That's what I really wanted. But I also know firsthand that getting the whole main cast together was next to impossible.
Kristen Doute
Too many chasms and people not willing to film with other people.
Tom Schwarz
But, but it would have been like, as a, as someone who was on the show and also as, and someone who didn't get that opportunity to, like, kind of film my resolve and as someone who is still watching the show, like, as a fan of the show, I was like, well, how does it just end like this?
Kristen Doute
Yeah. It did feel abrupt in the moment because what I found out, Schwartz and Sandy's was closing, and then the next day. Yeah, our producer, executive producer, hit me up and just gave me the heads up that Vanderpump Rules was going to be ending, too. So it was the double whammy. But I never felt like I, I don't even know if I properly processed it. Emotionally, I'm okay with it.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
But the double whammy was not pleasant.
Tom Schwarz
Fancy. Yeah. Same day.
Luke Broderick
They'll also get to see you on The Valley Season 2.
Kristen Doute
I dabble. I dabble. How you guys feeling going into season two? I feel like it's going to be so good, everybody. I've talked to you guys, chemistry is undeniable. I feel like Bravo's done it again.
Tom Schwarz
I feel like I, I, I'm not scared about anything.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
This has never happened to me.
Kristen Doute
You're a seasoned vet.
Tom Schwarz
In all the years of doing television, there's never been one season that I'm not like, I'm like, no, I think we're good.
Luke Broderick
I mean, look, I had a ball, but I think I meddled more than Kristen.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah, you did.
Luke Broderick
And it, you did medal and never bit me in the ass. And it's like, is, Am I gonna get bit in the ass now?
Tom Schwarz
You know, Luke was a little chatty Kathy this summer for sure.
Luke Broderick
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
Like, there were times where he.
Luke Broderick
I thought I was doing good. I thought I was doing, like, right by people. And it just stirred up, and that's all the teaser I can give.
Tom Schwarz
But you would come. You would come home and, like, gossip to me a little bit. And I'm like, wait, where did you hear this? And he's like, oh, well, so and so told so and so. And then so and so told me. And I'm like, what?
Kristen Doute
You're getting better at, you know, filling in the details. I mean, guys are notorious for having the drama without any details.
Tom Schwarz
It's.
Luke Broderick
I. I think it's part of this living in this world is you got to get the details. So, yeah, I'm getting the details now. And there are times maybe I should shut up.
Tom Schwarz
No, no, babe, just let it fly out of your mouth. I like it. It's so much fun.
Kristen Doute
What. What's like. Oh, go ahead.
Luke Broderick
I was gonna say. I will say tequila was involved last summer. And that's. That's probably my apprehension on seeing this season because there will be things I'm fairly certain. I don't remember saying that. I will watch myself.
Kristen Doute
Say, have you. Have any of your friends, family, been critical of your new venture into reality television?
Luke Broderick
Yeah, I wouldn't say critical as much as not very supportive at times, but mostly people think it's funny. Yeah, they. They get joy out of laughing at me.
Kristen Doute
It's a trip. We are so freaking lucky to have 10 years of our lives, our real friends captured. It's wild 11. 11 seasons of Vanderpump Rules. And now going into the second season on the Valley, it's like our job search.
Tom Schwarz
What I love about it is, like, of course there are some, like, not great times and times I wish we're not on film. But then there's so many funny and cool and awesome times that you're like, dude, I have the best video yearbook ever.
Kristen Doute
Ever in 4K.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah. Yeah.
Kristen Doute
I met Kristen like, what, 15 years ago? More than that, I. Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
Or like, yeah, 16. Would you move here? 09.
Kristen Doute
I moved here in 09.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
Do you remember your first impressions of me?
Tom Schwarz
Yes, I remember basically what you were wearing. I remember your car.
Kristen Doute
Can you describe for the audience?
Tom Schwarz
And I remember. Yes, I remember. I remember you being in, like, a maroon Adidas pants, like, with the snaps on the side, and then like a button down, like, camel colored, like a tan colored, like, suede, ish, like, soft shirt. And your hair was long. You had long hair, like, down to your ears, like your chin, almost greasy. And then A beanie.
Kristen Doute
I just driven across the country and I was traumatized. I was like, my God, I needed to go back to Florida and beg for my job.
Tom Schwarz
And then he got this is only la. People will get this. Or people that have been to la. But essentially, Tom Sandoval and. And I ish lived in West Hollywood. Right. So we live off of Melrose in West Hollywood. Very near sir and near TomTom. Well, Tom Schwartz gets off the freeway and he gets off on Melrose. But this is way, way down East Hollywood. Not a great neighborhood kind of area. And I remember when you pulled up and you were so scared because that when you got off the freeway, you were like, oh, this is where I live.
Kristen Doute
Well, no, by the way, it's a beautiful part of the city. It's just that I thought it would be tropical. I thought there would be palm trees. I thought it would look like when.
Tom Schwarz
You get off the freeway. That is not a beautiful part of the city.
Kristen Doute
I thought it would look like Venice. Right. When I got off the highway. Do you know what I mean? Iconic boardwalk, palm trees, and it was just city Hollywood.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah. Any hat. You had like your Honda Civic and you had like, some clothes and then you had like your Ninja Turtles. All right, all right, all right.
Kristen Doute
We can move on.
Tom Schwarz
Your metal chicken or your rooster. And then Pierre, your toad.
Kristen Doute
Pierre. Shout out to Pierre.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah, so he had like, his toys and then his clothes.
Kristen Doute
That was the best of times, dude.
Luke Broderick
The Ninja Turtles were the only thing I had remembered from hearing this story sometime in the past.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah, I remember it.
Kristen Doute
You know, it's so funny, Kristen. So many people come up to me and reference the fact that when we were all living together, we couldn't use the microwave and the air conditioner at the same time. I cannot believe how many people remember that. What's so true? What's like the most.
Tom Schwarz
Blow fuse.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
Trust me, I get it. I've blown plenty of fuses in my life. Well, I. Yeah, I've scrapped through times in my life.
Kristen Doute
What's the line from vintage VPR that people throw at you the most? Suck a dick.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah. 100.
Kristen Doute
Suck a dick is iconic.
Tom Schwarz
100.
Kristen Doute
Have. Luke, have you watched Vanderpump Rules?
Luke Broderick
I've seen first season, the last season.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
And like three episodes of season two.
Kristen Doute
Kristen, would you be upset if he wouldn't watch the whole thing?
Tom Schwarz
He wouldn't.
Luke Broderick
I won't.
Tom Schwarz
He won't do it. There's. Yeah, there's seasons I don't want him to see.
Kristen Doute
No, for sure. No.
Tom Schwarz
And that's season two. And on pretty much season one was like, yeah, it's fine.
Kristen Doute
Yeah, it's okay.
Tom Schwarz
I didn't have Botox. I wasn't cute. I have my old teeth.
Kristen Doute
But wait, when did you get new teeth?
Tom Schwarz
In like 2015.
Kristen Doute
I don't remember that.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah, they look fabulous. And then crowns, but. And I didn't have Botox. I didn't know how to do my makeup. I had really thin eyebrows. There's just like nothing cute about me in my early. Like my 20s.
Kristen Doute
I mean, you were iconic though.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah, my, like, early 30s. Yeah, for sure.
Kristen Doute
Do you still talk to, like most everybody? When's the last time you talked to, like, Sandoval? You guys ever talk?
Tom Schwarz
No.
Kristen Doute
Anybody?
Tom Schwarz
I have not talked to Santa. I don't even know last time I saw him. Probably at Jax's bar one time during karaoke or something like that. I randomly. I was at the Belmont having lunch not that long ago with my best friend who was in town. And right when I walk in, there's Joey Maloney, Katie's brother.
Kristen Doute
There's no way.
Tom Schwarz
How crazy. I go to use the restroom, I come out, then both sitting next. Not it's the same table as him, but Bo's like, at a different table. I'm like, what the hell? So I go and eat. Then Stassi walks in and I'm like. I actually text Katie and I was like, so your brother, Stassi and Bo are all here right now. And I hadn't seen any of them in so long, so that was cool.
Kristen Doute
Belmont is OG VPR spot. It should be on the tour. If there's ever a Vanderpump Rules tour, it should be one of the spots.
Tom Schwarz
100.
Kristen Doute
Have you guys set it? You guys set a date for a wedding? Have you guys thought about where you're going to get married? Is Tom Sandoval in the most extras gonna perform at your wedding? No. Okay. Luke's like, no.
Tom Schwarz
It's like winking. Yeah. I haven't broken the news to her yet.
Luke Broderick
Yeah, I've definitely talked to Tom more recently than you have.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah, that's for sure. Yeah, Tom invited him to like play ping pong.
Luke Broderick
Yeah, he's a ping pong table. And I don't know, he sent me something on Instagram. Kyle Chan and I play ping pong. I played. Yeah, you too.
Kristen Doute
Shout out to Kyle. We love you, Kyle.
Luke Broderick
But yeah, I don't know. That didn't happen. And then he hit me up a couple times to. To go out and the timing just.
Tom Schwarz
Didn'T line up so random.
Luke Broderick
I hit him up one time. The, like one time I went out and he was out of town, so that's one thing. That's pretty much it.
Kristen Doute
That's one thing that kind of makes me sad is that. I mean, I know everyone, a lot of people are still friends, but we just. We don't have the same sense of, like, family or community.
Tom Schwarz
I know.
Kristen Doute
We used to be such a tight knit group of people. You know what I mean?
Tom Schwarz
I still have that with Britney.
Kristen Doute
I feel like I still have it with everybody.
Tom Schwarz
You do?
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
You were kind of always like that.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
But I agree. Yeah, I. I just. I have it with Britney and Zach now. I feel like, like that's. I still do. Britney's the only one. But not Jack's. Definitely. I don't know. We all kind of just have grown apart, but I feel like the Valley is like bringing some of us back together.
Kristen Doute
You guys got some magic. You got lightning in a bottle again.
Tom Schwarz
I think so too.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
I don't. I don't know what that means, but we'll see.
Tom Schwarz
Magic.
Luke Broderick
I understand the colloquialism.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
But not like, as far as this world goes. I do believe with all the praise and what people are saying, this is such a great season. I believe it will be. However, this is not a genre of television I ever watched before meeting Kristen.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
I. When Kristen and I met, I said, what's a Vanderpump?
Kristen Doute
What's a Vanderpump?
Tom Schwarz
Vanderpump.
Kristen Doute
That is so fun, Bunny. The Gucci models barking. I don't know if you guys know, Gibson was actually a Gucci model. He had a billboard at the Grove.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah, he had a billboard in seven different countries.
Kristen Doute
Have you talked about this?
Tom Schwarz
I have on my podcast. Yeah. And he just booked Purina and he's going to be on a bag of dog food.
Kristen Doute
What?
Tom Schwarz
He shot that a couple weeks ago.
Kristen Doute
Gibson's working more than me. Oh, my God.
Luke Broderick
He had to learn a new pose for that and he nailed it.
Kristen Doute
When you're hot, you're hot. It's a truism.
Luke Broderick
I need to get Jill an agent.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
Wait, does Jill have envy?
Luke Broderick
No.
Kristen Doute
She jealous.
Luke Broderick
I don't think that's part of her.
Tom Schwarz
How would you feel about, like, your daughter being like, a model at what? Like a baby model?
Luke Broderick
Like, before they are forming memories of it or when.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah, like a baby model. Like a little baby.
Luke Broderick
And I haven't seen problem with that.
Kristen Doute
Okay, well, you guys, I was just.
Luke Broderick
Like, are you already Said you're going to pimp her out. So as far as a model, I.
Tom Schwarz
Feel like she's not even going to know any. You know, she. It's. She's not going to know.
Kristen Doute
Pay for that college.
Tom Schwarz
Exactly.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
We're starting the 529. We're starting all the accounts.
Tom Schwarz
All the stuff I see on Instagram, my algorithm. It's like, start that bank account.
Kristen Doute
I'm like, perfect for people. Yeah. Like just. Just like we started at the top. For people who are curious about having a child. People like me who don't have a child yet. Again, prospective mothers, we're going in blind.
Tom Schwarz
Shorts.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
We were really going in blind. I don't know anything that's refreshing to hear about anything. I'm just going to do my best.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
I'm confident in my mindset and work ethic.
Kristen Doute
Yeah.
Luke Broderick
That's what I'm confident in. Not in knowing or acting like I'm an expert in this. That I'm knowing that I'm going to figure it out because I know I can. And.
Tom Schwarz
Yes.
Luke Broderick
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
And I think you and I. I'm not worried because I think you and I are such a good balance. Our strengths are very different and our weaknesses are very different.
Kristen Doute
You guys have a great harmony. Probably the best harmony of any relationship I've ever seen. You have.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah. For sure.
Kristen Doute
Like, you. Respectfully. You guys have such a nice harmony together. You really do. You seem like you balance each other out so well. I feel like you're going to be a great dad. Be such a good mom.
Luke Broderick
Thank you.
Kristen Doute
You guys seriously mean this. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for letting me into your home when your belly's about to burst. This is such a precious, sacred moment. So I'm so happy just to sit down and record this. I'm going to listen to this years from now and just cherish.
Tom Schwarz
So am I. I'd be like, oh, my God. Before she was even here. So wild.
Kristen Doute
You guys, this is nice.
Tom Schwarz
If you're. If you are such a good. Like, I'm not saying just because you're a good dog parent makes you a good parent, but I think anyone who is a really wonderful animal parent is very capable of being. If they want to be a parent to a human, they are very capable of doing so.
Luke Broderick
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
Of having that much empathy and that much love and being that selfless and. And you're taking care of something that can't care for itself, you know, and that's what Brittany says about me all the time, is she thinks I'll be a good parent because I'm a good dog parent.
Luke Broderick
Tom, are you an uncle?
Kristen Doute
I am an uncle, yeah.
Luke Broderick
You are an uncle, yeah. Do you think you're willing to be somewhat of an uncle to our little one?
Kristen Doute
I would be honored to in any capacity. One of the great voids of my life is not to get too deep here. It's just not having a child, not having a family right now yet. But I, I, I'm very excited to be a parent. And, like, I just, again, I'm super grateful to get a little glimpse into it. You know what I mean? I've never really done a deep dive with my friends while they're pregnant, so this is special to me, but, yeah, guys, I appreciate the love.
Tom Schwarz
You'll be such a good.
Kristen Doute
Let's fire up that ice pebble machine.
Tom Schwarz
Yeah.
Kristen Doute
Satisfy some cravings, baby.
Tom Schwarz
Luke's going to love it, too, because the chomping is less aggressive.
Luke Broderick
Oh, it's so loud. Sometimes I'm like, we're trying to watch Severance or something, and I look over at Kristen, like, how much longer are you going to.
Tom Schwarz
He has. You have not complained about the chomps in months, though.
Luke Broderick
Yeah, I. Because you, You've chilled it out. We were in bed one time, and I couldn't sleep through the chomps.
Tom Schwarz
Feel it.
Luke Broderick
I could feel it vibrating the bed. Her ice chomps were so strong.
Kristen Doute
Let her have her chomps. Where's the empathy?
Luke Broderick
Yeah.
Tom Schwarz
Cheers to ice.
Luke Broderick
Just let me fall asleep first. You won't wake me up.
Kristen Doute
All right, guys, let's wrap it up. Appreciate the love.
Tom Schwarz
Detoxification complete.
Detox Retox with Tom Schwarz
Episode Title: Shavings & Cravings: Taking The Edge Off Pregnancy with Kristen Doute & Luke Broderick
Release Date: April 29, 2025
In this heartfelt episode of Detox Retox with Tom Schwarz, host Tom Schwarz sits down with his fiancé, Luke Broderick, and long-time friend, Kristen Doute, to delve into the multifaceted journey of pregnancy. Titled "Shavings & Cravings: Taking The Edge Off Pregnancy," the episode provides an intimate look into the physical, emotional, and social dynamics of expecting a child, all while maintaining the show's signature blend of mindfulness and mischief.
Kristen Doute opens the conversation by sharing her heartfelt desire to become a mother, expressing both joy and vulnerability:
"I think I'm going to call this episode 'Shavings and Cravings Taking the Edge off Pregnancy.' I'm not going to mince words. Probably my biggest insecurity in life right now being a 42-year-old man is not having kids." [01:04]
Tom echoes similar sentiments, revealing his own anxieties and aspirations regarding fatherhood:
"In terms of cravings, I think it's common knowledge that your hormones go a little crazy...so without further ado, here is Dr. Sterling..." [Kristen transitions the topic]
To provide a scientific backdrop, Dr. Noah Sterling, a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, is brought in to explain the phenomenon of pregnancy cravings:
"Food cravings and aversions during pregnancy affect between 50 to 90% of pregnant individuals... Pica behaviors warrant medical attention to address potential deficiencies and avoid risks." [04:18]
This segment sheds light on two prevailing theories behind cravings:
The conversation shifts to the nitty-gritty of daily routines and physical changes. Tom Schwarz candidly discusses the challenges he faces during pregnancy:
"I don't sleep anymore. Sleep like a full eight hours at night because you have to get up and pee like every five to 10 minutes." [08:29]
Kristen and Luke engage in playful banter about adjustments in their lives, highlighting the blend of humor and seriousness that accompanies pregnancy. They share anecdotes about experimenting with products like the "empathy belly" and managing ambient noises at home.
The trio delves into the emotional landscape of pregnancy. Tom expresses a yearning for deeper emotional connections:
"31 weeks in, I want Luke to, like, instead of me giving him a honey-do list, I want him to do things with me and read her mind." [14:39]
Luke reassures him of his commitment, emphasizing the balance and harmony in their relationship:
"I figure out that I have to read your mind. And I do my best just because." [14:49]
Their dialogue underscores the importance of mutual support and understanding in navigating the emotional ups and downs of pregnancy.
As they approach the final weeks of pregnancy, Tom and Luke discuss their preparations for welcoming their child. Topics include:
Nursery Planning: Kristen shares her excitement about touring the nursery and finalizing the vision board, describing it as "ethereal" and "creative" ([17:16]).
Balancing Careers and Parenthood: Luke talks about his burgeoning fame from reality TV and how it intersects with his impending fatherhood. He reflects on the challenges of maintaining privacy and sanctuary:
"I felt like I lost my sanctuary in Colorado when someone noticed me at a bar..." [18:28]
Financial Preparations: They touch upon setting up financial accounts like 529 plans to secure their child's future ([38:42]).
Kristen and Tom openly discuss their specific food cravings, relating back to Dr. Sterling's explanations. Tom shares his intense desire for ice, leading to the acquisition of a nugget ice machine:
"My number one thing was ice. And Luke and I opened up the door to a package that contained a freaking nugget ice machine." [20:45]
They also explore the concept of Pica, where cravings extend to non-food items, emphasizing the importance of addressing underlying nutritional deficiencies.
Throughout the episode, the guests infuse humor into their discussions, making light of everyday pregnancy-related challenges. Highlights include:
Empathy Belly Fails: Kristen jokes about receiving a disappointing empathy belly from Amazon, leading to humorous suggestions of attaching melons to her body ([08:55]).
Sleep Struggles: Tom humorously contrasts his sleepless nights with Luke's ability to nap effortlessly:
"He's like, I'm tired. I'm going to bed. He gets in bed, closes his eyes, and he's out like a light." [26:16]
Reality TV Antics: They reminisce about their time on Vanderpump Rules, sharing iconic moments and quotes that have become fan favorites:
"Suck a dick is iconic." [34:04]
The episode also touches on the evolution of friendships and community dynamics post-reality TV fame. Kristen expresses nostalgia for the tight-knit group they once had, while Tom acknowledges the drift but remains optimistic about the new connections formed through projects like The Valley.
"We used to be such a tight-knit group of people... But I feel like the Valley is bringing some of us back together." [36:31]
As the episode draws to a close, Kristen expresses deep gratitude for being part of such a personal and sacred moment:
"You guys seriously mean this. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for letting me into your home when your belly's about to burst." [39:35]
Tom and Luke reciprocate the sentiment, highlighting the importance of empathy, love, and support in their journey towards parenthood.
"Shavings & Cravings: Taking The Edge Off Pregnancy" offers a candid and comprehensive exploration of the complexities surrounding pregnancy. Through personal anecdotes, scientific insights, and heartfelt discussions, Tom, Kristen, and Luke provide listeners with a relatable and enriching narrative on preparing for parenthood. The episode beautifully balances emotional depth with humor, making it a must-listen for anyone navigating or contemplating the joys and challenges of expecting a child.
