Tom Schwartz
Thank you so much for doing this. Hello Jessica.
Jessica Ortner
Hello.
Thank you, thank you so much for having me.
Tom Schwartz
No, thank you. Because I am a late adopter and I've been proselytized or like I've just, I've only done a few sessions, like random YouTube videos and now I found you guys the tapping solution. But I like, it's, it's work, it's worked for me and I'm still an early adopter but I've been spreading the word and none of my friends know what it is. It's very popular on like, you know, Instagram, YouTube, the Internet in general, if you know, you know. But like most of my friends have no idea what it is. So yes, thank you for doing this. I thought it'd be fun to do like a little soft, launch into our listeners minds and introduce them to EFT tapping. Do you want to tell us a little bit about how you got into it? What is EFT tapping? It's emotional Freedom Technique, is that what it's called? It has a great sound to it,
Jessica Ortner
yes, it's called eft, also known as Emotional Freedom techniques. But most people refer to it as tapping because you're using your fingers tap on acupressure points on your face and body. These are nine points that have a high concentration of these nerve endings. And what research is showing is that it directly impacts your nervous system and reduces cortisol, the stress hormone. So when you're having a difficult time, it's not just in your head. You know this very well, Tom, it's in your body. When you're having a panic attack. It's not a thought, it is a physical experience. So if you just say, hey, calm down, don't worry about it, things will be fine. Your body cannot hear that message. You need to find a way to communicate a signal of safety to your body when you're having a difficult time. And that is what tapping does. You stimulate these points, it sends a calming signal to your brain, and you'll find that you can have the same thought, but without the physical anxiety anymore. And that's when those thoughts no longer have control over you and you're in control again.
Tom Schwartz
That was beautifully stated. So it's kind of a combination, from what I understand of traditional Chinese medicine, kind of like acupuncture meets modern psychology a little bit.
Jessica Ortner
Yes, that's exactly it. And that's why that you find a lot of traditional therapists who use cbt, they're now incorporating this modality. It's also been approved by the va, so a lot of veterans use it. I'll say the thing that, that makes this different than, say, meditation or talk therapy or breath work is that when you're having a hard time at 2 o' clock in the morning, you can't sleep. You have these looping, spiraling thoughts in that moment. It's hard to call your therapist and it's hard to just sink into a meditation. It's not accessible to you because what's happening in that moment is you're having this feeling, fight or flight response. Even though you're safe in your bed, your nervous system doesn't feel that way. It is triggered by something. And so by being able to know these nine points and be able to tap, it's the quickest way to allow your nervous system to know that it is safe. And I, and I want to mention this, Tom, because this word nervous system is thrown around a lot, and I don't think a lot of people understand what it is And I do think it's. If I can jump into that quickly.
Tom Schwartz
Yes, I would love that.
Jessica Ortner
Your nervous system, it does consist of your brain and your spinal cord and nerve endings. Back in the day, researchers thought that the brain was the center of everything and we were just puppets, kind of like, have you ever seen. I think it's in Men in Black too. It's like an alien in someone's head and they're just controlling, puppeteering the body. That is what we used to think the brain was, that everything was in the brain. And what we're realizing is everything's in the nervous system. And that includes the brain and your body. And it is a highway of information from the top down, constantly communicating. So when you start to feel a lot of stress, your body has learned that something is unsafe. And the reason you're having anxiety is as a protective mechanism. It's like misguided self love. There's nothing wrong with you. Your body has the very best intention. It's just trying to keep you safe because your nervous system doesn't care if your bar is successful or you reach your dreams or you become spiritually evolved. Your nervous system cares about safety and survival. And there's certain moments in life when we aren't feeling safe, safe. And we have to communicate through the body in a language that the body understands to be able to calm that anxiety.
Tom Schwartz
Yes. I love that. That was so beautifully stated. And I love what you said earlier too. It's like you can't hit your therapist up at three in the morning. Maybe you can if you have a really solid relationship with them, but it's really nice for like, I'm not going to say an instant quick fix, but maybe for me it's been a form of instant, I guess, gratification. Like it's very good at grounding you in the moment in a pinch. And I love it. And it's something I think I would love if more people would incorporate this into their daily routine. Is it something you recommend doing on a date? Do you eft tap on a daily basis like you would meditation or a workout?
Jessica Ortner
I have the type of personality that if you tell me to do something daily, I just won't want to do it. So I find, I don't know. Do you relate to that? I don't like the structure of I have to do it every day. I find that there's certain moments in my life where I know, okay, I have a big event going on or there's a lot going on. And for me it's nighttime. Nighttime tends to be when the looping thoughts can come in. I'm trying to solve problems that don't even exist yet. I can get very stuck in my head. I've been like that since I was a kid. The reason I gravitated so much to tapping was I lived with anxiety for so long that I almost didn't even know what it was like to not have anxiety. I just thought that was like part of the human experience. So for me, I will tap in the evenings, and I do it every day when I have something big going on. And then if not, I just. I just do it randomly. It's so easy to incorporate. It could be five minutes, it could be 10 minutes, it could be 15 minutes. You're not doing something for 30 minutes. You're finding these moments for your. Yourself. And that's what I love about it, is that it's so accessible and easy to incorporate into your life.
Tom Schwartz
Yes, it really is. It's such a handy little tool. Not to minimize it, but it is a handy, not a little tool. It's a magnificent tool to have in your back pocket, especially in a pinch. Like you said, it's based on psychology. A little acupuncture, mindfulness, like a little bit of everything. How did you discover eft? Can I ask you?
Jessica Ortner
Yeah, of course. I discovered it because my brother heard Tony Robbins talk about it. This was 20 years ago. He mentioned it. I mean, this is like he had an event and he just mentioned he used it. And my brother was like, I need to find out what it. What this is. He had a breakthrough. He started using it with friends. He was in his early 20s, and he was maybe 25. I was 20, and I was having a really tough time. And he came over and he goes, listen, I hear you're sick. Because I was sick with a cold. I had, you know, my sinus that I was congested. I was sick. But it was one of those colds where it's. You're on week two and you're just not getting better. And he goes, let's just try this thing. Let's see what happens. And so I start tapping, and there is a moment where I'm tapping on the top of my head. I'm the youngest girl. I have two older brothers. And I look at him and I go, if this is a practical joke, I will murder you. Because I was so skeptical of how weird it looked to be tapping on my head. He goes, no, no, no, no, I promise you, I'm not. This isn't A joke. Just, like, stick with it. Just try. Oh, okay, fine. So I keep tapping. And I found that my whole body, it was like I could physically feel that I was letting go, that I felt more centered. But then a thought came to my mind, and I looked at him and I go, I don't want to get better. And he goes, what do you mean you don't want to get better? I go, I am so hard on myself, and I'm struggling so much that I feel guilty every time I take a break from working, from trying. Being sick feels like the only way I can just take a break from this pressure without drowning in guilt. And he goes, okay, let's work on that. And so I started tapping, and I just said out loud, life feels unfair. I feel like I'm doing everything right and nothing is going my way. And I feel like I don't have any control. And I feel. And I just was allowing myself to just tell my brother these feelings, which, to be honest, I wasn't even conscious of 15 minutes before until I really kind of released some of the stress to see what was underneath. And I had such an incredible breakthrough. And I remember taking a breath in, and my sinuses had cleared, and I was like, wow, this is unbelievable. And then I did something that so many of us do. We do one thing, it really helps us. And then we just get busy with our lives. And I forgot about it for months. I didn't do it again until I was going through a breakup. I had just moved back in with my parents, didn't want them to hear me crying. And I was like, what is that thing that Nick told me? And I remembered half the points. I didn't do it perfectly, but I did it for a moment. And again, I just felt so comforted. And that's when I was like, this is insane. Like, how do people not know about this? And then I teamed up with my brothers and we made a documentary film about it. This is 19 years ago. And then since then, we've just been in the forefront of sharing this with people. And now in the last 10 years, the amount of research that has come out is really helping us understand why it works. Because when I started, I didn't know why it worked. I knew it worked. And that's beginning. The understanding is beginning to change.
Tom Schwartz
Yeah, I love that. Can we just. We don't have to go too deep, because this is. This is an introduction, one on one course. I don't want to overwhelm anyone who's interested right now or lose their attention span. But can we just briefly get into, like, how it works from a physiological standpoint? You kind of did a little bit earlier. We don't have to get too jargony. Is that okay, Jessica?
Jessica Ortner
Of course. And I won't get too jargony, but I'll, I'll list one study because I do feel like for the skeptics, this is the one that makes them go, all right, I'm going to try this.
Tom Schwartz
Thank you.

there was a study done in Bond University down in Australia where they took a group of people. One group did tapping. The second group did psycho education, which is like therapy or learning about mindset, how to view things differently. And then the third group was a control group which just relaxed. So cortisol is also known as the stress hormone. We all need a little cortisol to wake up in the morning. The challenge is we have cortisol throughout the day because of the stress, we're constantly being hit by this hormone. So in this study, the people who did the psychoeducation, their cortisol did go down. It went down by 19%, which is a pretty good number. But the group who did EFT tapping their cortisol dropped by an average of 43%, almost double what the traditional mindset people did. So not only are people saying, I feel better, but there are biomarkers showing that it is reducing cortisol that is powerful.
Tom Schwartz
So it's not just woo woo. And even. Well, it's not. That's a reoccurring theme on my show. What if woo woo works and it is backed by science and, and I'm here to testify that it's worked for me and that's how I felt earlier. You said, like, I wanted to tell. I wanted to like, get up on a mountain. But you guys, this is such a great tool to have in your toolbox. Like, I do get looping thoughts. I've succumbed to multiple panic attacks throughout my life. I don't have chronic anxiety, thankfully. But it's such a nice thing to use to accompany maybe whatever medications you take or have to take or therapy. I'm not saying it's going to replace your need to take a benzo or something like that, but it's such a great tool to use in conjunction with whatever you're doing.
Jessica Ortner
Right, exactly. And it's free and it's literally at your fingertips. So you could follow along with the tapping meditation that I'm doing. But say you're at the grocery store and you start to feel anxious, you can just start tapping right away. You can tap in your bed. So once you know these nine points, which I'd love to share with the listeners, you have this for the rest of your life, anytime you need it, you know where these acupressure points are.
Tom Schwartz
And that in itself is calming. Right? Just knowing, like you have that at your disposal whenever you need it. By the way, I saw someone before I knew what it was. And in hindsight, now I realize they were doing eft tapping. It was at Whole Foods in West Hollywood, California, and they were tapping on their face. And I had no, I wasn't judging, I was just curious. And now I know they were. They were doing a little eft tapping session. Can we, can we, can we talk about the nine points that you just referenced?
Jessica Ortner
Yeah, absolutely. So I will explain these. And if you are on a walk, if you're doing anything, pause while I explain these and find these points because it's the best way to learn. The very first point is on the side of your hand, underneath the pinky, on the fleshy part of your hand. It does not matter what side of the body you tap on. And you just use two or three fingers. It's A firm but gentle tap. Whatever feels good. You don't want to hurt yourself, but you want it to be firm. The next point is where it's called the eyebrow point and it's where the hair of your eyebrow begins. So a little bit lower for you, Tom. It's where your glasses are. Yeah.
Tom Schwartz
Perfect.
Jessica Ortner
Then if you follow your eyebrow, you'll find the spot on the side of the eye and it's right on the bone, so it's not back on the temple, it's really on the bone on the side of your eye.
Shannon Maldonado
Perfect.
Jessica Ortner
Then we have underneath the. Right on the bone, we have underneath the nose, between the upper lip and the nose, underneath the mouth, which is the crease between your lip and your chin. Then you have your collarbone point. If you feel the U shaped bone under your throat and you go down an inch and over an inch on either side, it's right below your collarbone. That's the point. If you're not sure, you can use your whole hand to tap on your chest. Then we have underneath the arm. It's a hand width from your armpit. If you are a woman wearing a bra, it tends to be where your bra strap lies. And then we have the very top of the head. And those are the nine points again, you can tap on either side and you usually follow along. Or if you are really upset, this is like a great tip. You're upset, you're about to call a friend anyway to talk about what happened. Talk to them on the phone. But now start stimulating the points because what that does is it allows you to express how you feel, but you're sending that signal of comfort to your body. So you're not as you're not re triggering yourself over and over again.
Tom Schwartz
I love that. So if you're freaking out, you're stressed out, you're having an anxiety attack, you're talking to someone that's comforting. It's okay to so, like do these taps while you're talking about it.
Jessica Ortner
Yes, yes, exactly. This is the opposite of just jumping into positive thinking. What you want to do is get clear on the thought that's creating the physical anxiety. And if you stimulate these acupressure points, it sends this calming signal. So now your brain is going, wait a second. Body's starting to feel calm. But this is, you know, this message is saying something's dangerous. This doesn't line up, so it recalibrates and you get to the point that you can have the same thought, but it's not triggering you in the same way. The Intensity of it goes down.
Tom Schwartz
Yes, yes. So it's.
So it's.
Yeah. Backed by science, but it's also the power of positive thinking and just being proactive about it as well.
Jessica Ortner
Yes, but I'm almost saying it's the opposite. Because you don't want to start positive. You want to start with acknowledging, this is hard. I am lost.
This sucks.
Like, if we go positive too fast, what's going to happen is there's a part of your brain that goes, this is BS and it doesn't have a place to land. You have to look at it as if you're tending a garden. You need to look at the weeds and pull them out before you plant something. So you want to have a moment where you're focusing on what's bothering you while you're tapping. When you start to feel better, you can start moving to something more positive or say you're feeling great and you're like, I just want to boost this feeling. You can tap on something positive. My warning to people is simply if you're tapping on something positive and it feels like there's a lot of resistance, it's probably because you need to give a voice to how you're really feeling before you move on to a more positive way of looking at it.
Tom Schwartz
Beautifully stated. You were nice enough to share one of your early stories of how you kind of fell into it, your introduction to it. Do you have any. Just without naming names, any testimonies or success stories you'd like to share that you've experienced from clients?
Jessica Ortner
Yeah, I think the biggest frustration, which is like a good quality problem, is we get so many stories, and I really do want to just stand on the largest mountain and be like, guys, these stories are incredible. But I'm going to share one of the first stories we ever received, because I'll never forget it. It was. This was about 18 years ago. There were young veterans coming back from Iraq. And we get this message from a gentleman, and he said, I came back from Iraq and I was struggling with ptsd and I walked into a Walmart and it was so crowded that all of a sudden I just felt frozen. I felt so triggered, and I felt a panic attack coming on. So in that moment, I just started tapping on the acupressure points. And he messaged me to be like, thank you so much. It helped me move through that physical panic and gain control. And he ended by saying that there was another. That he was dressed regularly in civilian clothes, but there was another gentleman who was dressed in his uniform who Walked past him and tapped him on the shoulder and said, brother, keep tapping. It works. That always has stayed with me. And what I take away from that is how this can be something that really supports you in those moments when nothing else is accessible. He's still going to therapy, he's still doing all the other things, but what an incredible tool to know and have in your back pocket for those moments when you really need support.
Tom Schwartz
Jessica, that was beautiful and powerful and, yeah, incredibly empowering for that person in particular because they know they can do it again. They have access to it anywhere, anytime. Like you said, it doesn't cost anything. And the knowledge is the power. Yeah, that's so cool.
Jessica Ortner
And what's really incredible too is we do get a lot of people coming to us saying, wow, I'm not getting migraines monthly like I was doing before my. I'm sleeping better than I ever had before my relationship. I'm able to communicate better. And that all comes down to the lowering cortisol. One of the things that we've been up against is when you have a technique that works with so many different things, there can be a lot of skepticism. Someone's like, oh, you're saying this can help my migraines and it can help my stress around my finance. Like, that doesn't make sense. What tapping does is it lowers the stress response, it lowers the cortisol. And when we lower our stress, we're resourceful, we're creative, we're innovative, we get ideas. We are our best selves. We are the ones who, who figure it out. Tapping is just getting this lowering the stress enough so that it gets out of your way.
Tom Schwartz
That's I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed and I can't wait to post this and share this. The tapping solution is the website. There's also an app and they also have ones like that can help. Like there's a thing called cortisol face. Or if you're feeling puffy or maybe you're hungover, there's taps for stuff like that too. Like to help with the aesthetic issues, aren't there?
Jessica Ortner
If you tap on what is bothering you or even do a quick one minute tapping experience, it will help with that puffiness. Sometimes we have to get to what's really stressing us out. But maybe what's stressing you out is your critical voice, the pressure that you're putting on yourself. So you suddenly do a tapping meditation about quieting the critical voice and then you look in the mirror and you go, wow, my face is Less puffy. I actually feel better about myself because it's lowering cortisol.
Tom Schwartz
Yes.
My inner critic is a real asshole sometimes and I can't wait to hush him with some EFT tapping. Well, thank you so much. I don't want to take up any more of your time. I just wanted to introduce my listeners to this and where can they find you? Yes, aside from the app tappingsolution.com where else can we find you?
Jessica Ortner
Jessica, if you go to on Instagram, you can find us on the Tapping Solution. We have a lot of quick tapping meditations there if you want a quick experience. And as you said, the app is available everywhere. It's called the Tapping Solution app. And we also have a new book that came out called Rewired. A great endorsement by Hugh Jackman. Tony Robbins wrote the Forward. This is kind of the cornerstone book if you're interested in more of like, getting deeper into this practice.
Tom Schwartz
Thank you so much for this introduction to EFT tapping. Jessica. Thank you for your time, your energy, your charisma. I feel like we're gonna change some lives today. I really do. So thank you.

Thank you. Grateful for you, Tom. Thank you so much.
