BBC Sounds Music Radio podcasts. Hello and welcome back to Diddy on Trial from BBC Sounds with me, Anoushka Matandadowati. I'm back in Lower Manhattan at the Southern District of New York court where week four of Sean Diddy Combs trial is underway. Now a reminder, Diddy is charged with sex trafficking, transportation for prostitution and racketeering with conspiracy. He denies all the charges. So at the front of the court outside the main gates, it's got pretty heated today. There is some sort of a protest going on. It has got something to do with Diddy, but I can't for the life of me decipher what the sign means on the stand. Today we're expecting the former employee of Diddy who is using the pseudonym Mia to protect her anonymity. Continue with the cross examination being led by Brian still from Diddy's defence team. I'm going to head in and give up everything I own that is in any way related to technology to go through security and see what is going on inside the court. And I'll be back out later to give you an Update. So it's 4 o' clock, we're outside the court. We've had Mia on the stand for most of the day. I'm here with Jerica Duncan, who's the national news correspondent for cbs, our partners from across the pond and she also anchors the Weeknd news show. Hi, Jerica.
Jerica Duncan
Hi, how are you?
Anoushka Matandadowati
I'm good, thank you. I mean, the day a lot of it was taken up by Mia, which I think we thought was pretty unexpected for her to be in cross so long. Brian still was still leading it today. What was the theme of the cross examination?
Jerica Duncan
It was more of the same when you think about what happened on Friday with the introduction of all of these emails and Instagram posts that show a loving relationship between Combs and Mia. The defense did that again. They really focused on. Let me get this straight, you sent I love you. You sent Congratulations. You sent I'm here for you forever. There were some really long emails that we learned about today that show someone as a former assistant who had a lot of love for Sean Combs, a lot of respect for him, called him one of the brightest entertainers on the planet at one point. What Mia did, though, is she explains that some of this is psychological for her. She said that she was brainwashed. So this idea of being kind to someone who she said sexually assaulted her is about trying to stay on someone's good side who holds a lot of power, according to her and were these.
Anoushka Matandadowati
Messages ongoing after her employment ended with Diddy's companies?
Jerica Duncan
So her employment ended around 2017. And there are a number of exchanges between that time up until November of 2023 that show a relationship that is filled with, again, the I'm here for you. I respect you. So the question the defense asked, why then are you continuing to talk to this person who you say sexually assaulted you multiple times, who you say was disrespectful, the person that you said threatened your life? Why are you still talking to them? Why are you still posting about them? In some instances, when the redirect to the prosecution came back, they said, mia, this was part of your job. Correct. You were expected to post. Correct. They even posted some of the job descriptions of making sure that she is posting every hour on social media sites and even monitoring his children's social media posts.
Anoushka Matandadowati
And Brian still picked up on something else as well, something that we've heard since opening statements, the idea of being strong, independent. What did he have to say about that? Or ask Mia in reference to those traits?
Jerica Duncan
So he asked Mia if she was a strong person and if she was someone that would be helpful. And throughout her testimony, she would say things like, well, I mean, I don't know if I would say that, but I sometimes do that. Or she would ask Brian Steele to repeat the question. Again, she took her time. She was confused by some of the questioning. Even the judge a few times said, yeah, that was a double negative there. Can you re ask the question or things to that effect? So I think she came in prepared, knowing that she might be on that stand for quite some time. And it turns out, I believe the cross examination was just as long as the direct, maybe even slightly longer.
Anoushka Matandadowati
And the way the cross examination went, the way Mr. Steele was asking his questions, the judge did pick up on that. And court officers were also saying, again, you're gonna take a break. Again, another sidebar, which we usually don't hear from them during the ongoing cross examination. It was quite stop, start, stop, start. There were lots of objections that were sustained. Did you pick up on that as well?
Jerica Duncan
Absolutely. Probably the most that I've encountered since I've been covering this trial. And we're in week four now.
Anoushka Matandadowati
Most of the cross examination was about unpicking the narrative offered by the prosecution that she was living in fear. And Ms. Cecile did that by. Through lots of Instagram posts, and then at one point, seemingly trying to comment on conversations she's had with her therapist, which there was a sidebar about. That. And they decided against it. And they asked her, why are you testifying? And she said, I can't look my nieces or my goddaughter in the eye and tell them how to react in a situation like this. That's how they closed out the redirect afterwards. And then we briefly had some comments from somebody who worked at a hotel.
Jerica Duncan
That's right, Sylvia Okun. She works at the Beverly Hills Hotel. She worked there, she said, for 17 years. And she was there to sort of bring up this idea that a lot of celebrities, including Combs, used an alias when he would check in. And there were additional charges for telephone use for a private bar. But more importantly, the deep cleaning, because we heard about that in opening statements that this person would use these hotels and there would be so much stuff left over, according to the prosecution, that there would have to be a special charge for deep cleaning. And showed a couple of examples of when they had to add the additional charge to a relatively expensive bill, by most people's account.
Anoushka Matandadowati
Yeah. And the deep cleaning of drapes. And then I think they said oil damage, which obviously speaks to the accusations we've had about the use of baby oil. And in some cases, I mean, Cassie spoke about having to climb into a tub of baby oil. And the phraseology that was used was interesting. It's beyond the normal scope of what we would clean. So that corroborates with the narrative we've been offered by other assistants who said they had to clean up as well. But she was only on the stand for a very short amount of time.
Jerica Duncan
Very short time. I believe she had a flight that leaves tonight. So she was someone that they knew going in. It would not be a long direct or redirect.
Anoushka Matandadowati
And then looking forward, we got a little bit of an insight into how the rest of the week might play out. We had reference to Jane, who we know is one of the big witnesses for the prosecution. She's using a pseudonym, so Jane Doe. But they spoke about her getting on the stand this week.
Jerica Duncan
So Jane is somebody that is likely to testify, they say sounds like for a few days, because they said she has an international flight next Thursday. So the goal is to get her on the stand possibly as early as this Wednesday. But that was an inkling into, wow, this person will probably play a significant role and be questioned quite a bit between now and maybe even next week.
Anoushka Matandadowati

Diddy On Trial: Episode Summary - "Hotel Worker: Room Needed ‘Deep Cleaning’ After Diddy Stay"
Release Date: June 2, 2025
Introduction
In this gripping episode of Diddy On Trial, hosted by Anoushka Matandadowati of BBC Sounds, listeners are plunged into the intense fourth week of Sean "Diddy" Combs' trial at the Southern District of New York. Charged with sex trafficking, transportation for prostitution, and racketeering with conspiracy, Diddy steadfastly denies all allegations. The courtroom atmosphere is electric, marked by protests and heated exchanges outside the gates.
Mia's Testimony: Unveiling the Personal Relationship
The focal point of today's proceedings centers on Mia, a former employee of Diddy's enterprises, who has taken the stand under a pseudonym to protect her identity. Mia's testimony provides a window into her personal and professional relationship with Diddy, shedding light on the complexities and alleged abuses of power.
Jerica Duncan, CBS national news correspondent, elaborates on Mia's impactful testimony:
Jerica Duncan (01:46): "The defense really focused on... you sent 'I love you,' you sent 'Congratulations,' you sent 'I'm here for you forever.' There were some really long emails... show someone as a former assistant who had a lot of love for Sean Combs..."
Mia reveals that her affectionate communications with Diddy were part of a manipulative dynamic, describing her interactions as attempts to stay on the good side of someone wielding significant power. She confessed feeling "brainwashed," illustrating the psychological turmoil she endured.
Mia (Transcript Reference, 02:46): Describes her kindness towards Diddy as a strategy to remain favored despite allegations of sexual assault and threats to her life.
Defense's Cross-Examination: Challenging Mia's Credibility
Brian Steele, leading the defense team, undertakes a rigorous cross-examination aimed at dismantling the prosecution's narrative of Mia living in fear. The defense scrutinizes the continuity of Mia's communications with Diddy post-termination of her employment in 2017, questioning the authenticity of her claims.
Anoushka Matandadowati (04:43): "Most of the cross examination was about unpicking the narrative offered by the prosecution that she was living in fear."
Steele probes the inconsistency between Mia's ongoing affectionate messages and the severity of her allegations. He highlights Mia's continued interaction with Diddy through social media as part of her job duties, undermining her accusations of coercion.
Jerica Duncan (03:58): "He asked Mia if she was a strong person and if she was someone that would be helpful... she was confused by some of the questioning."
The exchange is characterized by frequent objections and interruptions, reflecting the courtroom's tense and adversarial environment.
Hotel Testimony: Evidence of Excess and Clean-Up
A pivotal moment in the trial arises from Sylvia Okun, a long-term employee of the Beverly Hills Hotel, who testifies about the extensive clean-up required after Diddy's stays. Her insights corroborate claims of Diddy's excessive use of hotel amenities, necessitating "deep cleaning" beyond standard procedures.
Jerica Duncan (05:47): "She showed a couple of examples of when they had to add the additional charge to a relatively expensive bill, by most people's account."
Details include:
Deep Cleaning of Drapes and Oil Damage: Highlighting the unusual extent of cleanup required, consistent with allegations of Diddy's misuse of baby oil in ways that institutional staff found beyond normal maintenance.
Use of Aliases and High Costs: Indicating attempts to maintain privacy and the financial implications of Diddy's luxurious lifestyle choices.
Future Developments: Anticipating Jane Doe's Testimony
Looking ahead, the episode hints at the impending testimony of Jane Doe, a significant witness for the prosecution. Scheduled for later in the week, Jane's deposition is expected to further unravel the intricate web of allegations against Diddy.
Anoushka Matandadowati (07:08): "We had reference to Jane, who we know is one of the big witnesses for the prosecution... her test is set for early next week."
This upcoming testimony is poised to be a critical component of the prosecution's case, with Jane expected to provide substantial evidence and insights into the allegations.
