Title: In Sickness and in Health Subtitle: Love, Disability, and a Quest to Understand the Perils and Pleasures of of Interabled Romance Author: Ben Mattlin Narrator: Rene Ruiz Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 10 mins Language: English Release date: 01-30-18 Publisher: Beacon Press Genres: Self Development, Relationships Publisher's Summary: A frank, humorous exploration of interabled dating, love, and marriage Ben Mattlin's wife, ML, recalls falling in love with his confidence and sheer determination. On one of their earliest dates, he persuaded her to ride on his lap in his wheelchair on their way home from an Elvis Costello concert. Thirty years later, they still travel like this from time to time, undaunted by the curious stares following them down the street. But In Sickness and in Health is more than an "inspiring" story of how a man born with spinal muscular atrophy - a congenital and incurable neuromuscular condition - survived childhood, graduated from Harvard, married an able-bodied woman, built a family with two daughters and a cat and a turtle, established a successful career in journalism, and lived happily ever after. As Mattlin considers the many times his relationship has been met with surprise or speculation by outsiders - those who consider his wife a "saint" or him just plain "lucky" for finding love - he issues a challenge to listeners: why should the idea of an "interabled" couple be regarded as either tragic or noble? Through conversations with more than a dozen other couples of varying abilities, ethnic backgrounds, and orientations, Mattlin sets out to understand whether these pairings are as unusual as onlookers seem to think. Reflecting on his own experience he wonders: How do people balance the stresses of personal-care help with the thrill of romance? Is it possible that the very things that appear to be insurmountable obstacles to a successful relationship - the financial burdens, the physical differences, the added element of an especially uncertain future - could be the building blocks of an enviable level of intimacy and communication that other couples could only dream of? We meet Shane Burcaw, a 23-year-old writer, who offers a glimpse of his first forays into dating with a disability. There's Rachelle Friedman, the "paralyzed bride", as the media refers to her, and her husband, discussing the joys and challenges of a new marriage and a growing family; and acclaimed journalist John Hockenberry and his wife, Alison, who reveal the intricacies of long-term married life. What emerges is a candid glimpse into the challenges and joys of interabled love - from the first blush of sexual awakening to commitment and marriage and through to widowhood. Critic Reviews: "Mattlin expresses himself clearly and succinctly, without an underlying tone of self-pity. His interviews with other couples also portray steadfast relationships where each has thrashed out problems in ways that allow them to stay together. Moving and informative stories of 'uncommonly intimate and enduring' interabled partnerships." ( Kirkus Reviews) "Ben Mattlin has written an inspired and inspiring book about couples facing the challenge of one partners disabilities.

Title: Out of the Doghouse Subtitle: A Step-by-Step Relationship-Saving Guide for Men Caught Cheating Author: Robert Weiss Narrator: Timothy Andrés Pabon Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 58 mins Language: English Release date: 01-30-18 Publisher: Tantor Audio Genres: Self Development, Relationships Publisher's Summary: It's all about cheating - the biggest threat to intimacy. Typically, men are good at creating rifts in relationships but terrible at mending them, especially after they've repeatedly betrayed their partner through sexual infidelity. For the most part, cheating men are both intimacy-challenged and empathy-challenged, and, as such, they lack the skills needed to overcome the damage wrought by their infidelity. Robert Weiss has spent over 20 years in the treatment of sex and intimacy issues. He's helped both cheating men and their betrayed spouses move through the horrors of infidelity. In Out of the Doghouse he shares his expertise, illuminating the ways in which men can move beyond their usual feeble efforts to smooth things over. Saying "I'm sorry" and trying to "buy forgiveness" with flowers and jewelry may temporarily calm the stormy seas of infidelity. However, these actions do nothing to re-establish intimacy and trust - the key components to help the distraught woman feel better about her relationship over the long-term and get over the cheating. The simple truth is, men and women are very different when it comes to intimacy and relationships. While men are able to compartmentalize things like sexual infidelity, women typically view cheating as an affront to their entire relationship. They think, "If he is lying to me about sex, he's probably lying to me about everything." For betrayed women, trust just flat-out disintegrates. And without proper guidance, men have little hope of restoring it. Weiss provides exactly the needed guidance in Out of the Doghouse, helping men move past the usual infidelity roadblocks that result from cheating in ways that will not only save a damaged relationship, but restore intimacy to make it better than ever. I had the great experience of studying with Dr James Pawelski, University of Penn Masters of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) Senior Scholar, a gifted professor and storyteller. Further, my frequent MAPP Year seatmate, and fellow Cohort member was Suzie Pileggi. Suzie is a fantastic writer, and brilliant mind. Suzie is beautiful, curious, articulate and embodies vibrancy. Together Suzie and Jamesâs Happy Together is a a perfect expression of loving relationships from two adoring partners who are walking the talk. Bravo!! Dive in and savor this groundbreaking, uplifting fun book. Wedding Planning? Buy this book! Reading Happy Together and discussing it with my fiance has been some of the best wedding-planning I've done yet! This will be my go to engagement present for years to come. Yes, you can be happy together - with heart, art and positive psychology science! Full disclosure - I did the MAPP at U Penn and James was one of my professors. During my year in the program, he and Suzie became engaged, so I feel like, in some ways, I've had a front-row seat to the beginning of their marriage. I remember coming back from the Christmas vacation and James was beaming as he told our class about this very positive relationship in his life, and shared with us about how wonderful Suzie was and all the amazing things she had done in her life, and how brilliant and heartfelt she was - and when I met Suzie, you could tell it was all true. I remember thinking "Of course James fell in love with Suzie - she's a total dream partner! And of course Suzie fell in love with James - he's a real catch!" They are a great couple and a great team and I'm honoured to know them both. Sometime later, Suzie became pregnant and I was at a conference with her and James (and other people, obvs) and the Gottmans were presenting. I remember hearing Suzie, visibly pregnant at the time, talking with the Gottmans about relationships. The Gottmans were talking about the physical side of relationships and how important this was, and Suzie, showing her pregnant belly, said that it was clearly going well, but the Gottmans pushed back noting that pregnancy didn't make a relationship strong.

This book is awesome. So much good advise regarding relationships. And yes, she gives her opinons but it is up to the individual to decide to stay or go. I totally agree with her advise about bringing others into your relationship via talk. Very good and informative book if you are at that stage where you are asking yourself, "Stay or Go". Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book in return for my honest review. What To Do? Read This Book! Dr. Ruth is definitely more than a sex therapist and this book certainly proves she is an excellent couples therapist as well. I like the way she always tells the truth and doesn't let you side step the real issues. This book has made me think and realize life is too short to be unhappy, even for the benefit of others. I highly recommend this book if you are questioning your relationship and not sure what to do about it. I felt like I was getting advice from a good friend. Easy to read and understand and makes so much sense.

Title: Healing Your Attachment Wounds Subtitle: How to Create Deep and Lasting Intimate Relationships Author: Diane Poole Heller Narrator: Diane Poole Heller Format: Original Recording Length: 6 hrs and 6 mins Language: English Release date: 12-01-17 Publisher: Sounds True Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 32 votes Genres: Self Development, Relationships Publisher's Summary: Why do we experience recurring struggles in our relationships? And why do traumatic events - such as a physical injury, emotional threat, loss of a loved one, or other life crisis - so often awaken or amplify our sense of fear, anger, isolation, or helplessness? From our earliest years, teaches Diane Poole Heller, we develop an attachment style that follows us through life, replaying in our intimate relationships, with our children, and at work. And traumatic events can deeply affect that core relational blueprint. With Healing Your Attachment Wounds, a pioneer in attachment theory and trauma resolution brings together these two fields to help us understand and benefit from their complementary principles and methods. This in-depth audio learning program sheds light on the three styles of insecure attachment - Avoidant, Ambivalent, and Disorganized - and the ideal fourth style of Secure attachment, where we enjoy a foundation of safety, adaptability, and intimacy with others. The good news is that we can change, regardless of our early or current life experiences. "As we heal and move toward Secure attachment," teaches Heller, "we become aware of triggers and patterns in our relationships. Our nervous system learns to be more regulated. Things don't throw us off so easily. And we open our capacity to love and experience greater compassion." Through key principles, examples, and practical exercises, this program invites you to begin your own healing journey toward healthy vulnerability, wholeness, and connection with others. Members Reviews: Awesome Narration Book is a really lively summary of attachment theory, plus new insights that I didnt gain from the popular Attached book. Her narration is very authentic, as if shes talking to you in person or teaching a lecture, not just dryly reading text. Highly recommend! Superb! This is an excellent overview of trauma, healing and flourishing as a human from the attachment perspective. I've listened to a lot of other works about attachment, Stan Tatkin, Dan Siegel, Kinnison, Levine and Heller, Sue Johnson, etc, and this is one of my favorites. Just finished listening to it and looking forward to listening a second time. I found Diane Poole Heller's voice very pleasant. Highly recommended! check yourself before you wreck yourself I've heard it said that the quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives. Not just intimate relationships but any and all of them - in which the common denominator is you. If you have tried and failed repeatedly in your interpersonal history then you should examine your attachment functioning and manifest behavior in fine detail. Every interaction you ever have in life adds up, like raindrops - will the outcome be a powerful deep river that gauges into the bedrock or a scattered squall that dissipates across the barren plains? Diane's work here will show you not who you are, but how you are - the hidden, reactive, maladaptive parts of your psychology that drive your behavior and lead to relationship difficulties. And some clues on how to correct these. Gold Gold. This provided me with valuable insight into my own attachment style and the simple steps I can take to move towards secure. I also felt a lot more compassion for people I previously judged as horrible. And a positive way forward.

WoW! If only people facing these same challenges would listen to Esther, I sincerely believe more marriages would find complete healing and restoration! AMAZING WORK!!! The best episode so far! Love it! Such a heartfelt episode, I could not help but share the pain and all the feelings of this couple. dealing with an affair? So many concepts that apply if you are dealing with, have dealt with, have a friend that is dealing with an affair... or not. all usable and applicable info What a great episode!! It's easy to judge infidelity as immoral and / or a lack of self control. While infidelity could happen to the best of us, it's important to understand why it happened and what the source of the issue may be, especially when the transgressor is guilty and wants to continue the relationship. While nothing can excuse the infidelity, primarily because it's an extreme form of lies, there is a sense of redemption that you can expect from this episode. Not for him, but for her.
