But it was the show that was on for, like, seasons and seasons, and it was just Bud Friedman, and he had a little monocle, and he would host Evening at the Improv on the television. It was on a. E. Network or some. And they. And every comic that, you know was on it as a. At some point. Like, Sandler was on it. Chris Rock was on it.

Yeah. And. And so then I watched all this, and it wasn't like the really, really good, polished comics.

It also was, like, the 80s and early 90s, so, like. So, like, the style was all kind of whack and just like, you know.

And people were wearing, like, really cool suits with, like, giant shoulder pads. But it wasn't even, like, the great comics that I was like, I'm inspired by this. It was like, the shitty ones.

That, like, I'm like, this guy got on tv. I was like, I think I could do that.

So then when I moved out to California when I was like. I moved when I was 18, but I got a job in Hollywood at the Improv in Hollywood when I was 20 years old.

Yeah, there's two. No, it wasn't that bad. I was hit by a cement truck when I was a kid, which I've told you, but.

Yeah, it was crazy. And I couldn't walk for a couple years. And so, like, when I was doing all of my rehab and figuring, you know, how to get better, I couldn't play sports anymore. And I was like. I thought I was, like, an athletic kid, but in hindsight, I was, like, perfectly fine.

Yeah. When you're your kid, you're like. Yeah.

[Adam DeVine]

You're just like, we're all going pro.

Yeah.

My whole neighborhood. Yeah. Without a dog. And so I was like, they're raising

a football team in this culture sack.

[Adam DeVine]

Totally. Totally. And. And so I. I couldn't play sports, so I started calling to my local radio station. I think that's awesome. And I would do different characters and different impressions on the Notebook, and I just, you know, write bits. And that is so great. So you.

You were pretending to be the comics.

[Adam DeVine]

Yeah.

Or making up new kinds of comics.

[Adam DeVine]

I was making up, like, I was. I was like, characters. And then. And then I would do. I was in, like, I think seventh or eighth grade, and I. And I would, like, write the bits when I was in school. And then as soon as I got home from school, it was like the drive time hour, so from like, 4 to 5, it was like, you're.

You're sitting with everyone in traffic.

[Adam DeVine]

Yeah. So it was like, I. I lived really close to the school, so I would, like. My friend would wheelchair me home, or it's just me, like, in a wheelchair.

That's a goddamn.

Yeah, he got. We got out of school a little early, so. Yeah. So it was awesome. Was that. And it's.

It's good to have a friend with a wheelchair. They have great seats.

[Adam DeVine]

Oh, dude, it's. It was the best we got. And. And so I. I would just make up these characters, and then they would. They invited me, like, down to the station because they wanted to pay me. Oh, no. They were like, we want you to be part of the drive time hour. And I'm like, hell, yeah, mom. Load me up in the minivan. And she, like, carries me and puts me in the minivan. My legs don't work. And. And I have to sit in the back because both legs have to be fully extended. And then we get there, and she puts me in the wheelchair. My legs are extended. We go into the. Into the radio station, which is, like, downtown Omaha, and we get There. And they're like, oh, we didn't know you were a crippled child.

They say straight up crippled.

[Adam DeVine]

Well, they didn't, they were like, oh, we didn't know you were a kid. And because I only talked to them in character, I never talked to them just because I was afraid, like if they find out like I was a little kid, they wouldn't, they wouldn't want me.

And, and thus a great actor was born. Yeah, yeah, you, you had grown men, grown radio men smoking cigarettes, fool that you were not a child.

[Adam DeVine]

But then it was even better. They, they gave me like free concert tickets.

Oh, that's.

And free CDs and all that. That was like awesome as a kid.

And would they. Did they let you do the full time thing and did you pay you those things?

They're just like, you still call in, like call in every day, we'll know it's you now.

And then it became like a regular thing until I went on vacation. My parents took me to Disney World when I was like 14. So when you're 14 and you're like a horny little boy, like when puberty is just like taking hold of your body, the last want to be is like next to Mickey Mouse, you're like, fucking get me out of here.

I have a bit in my stand up about being 17 and being like, I want to drink around the world.

[Adam DeVine]

Yeah, yeah, totally. And I'm like, this sucks. And I get home and I'm like just ready to get all my aggression out with my characters on the radio. And I turned on the radio and they're playing it's the End of the World as we know it for 24 hours. And I'm like, what is going on? And the call wasn't going through. And I'm like, mom, what's happening? Say to the world? And then I found out later, within the next couple days that they are off the air. The radio station is defunct and now it's top 40 radio. And my brand of comedy didn't jive with their new Britney Spears top 40 bullshit.

Fuck that.

And that's how they went out. 24 hours of it's the End of the World of all the songs.

Do we. We. It was like when YouTube first came about. Yeah. Pioneers. The Gold Rush 6. Yeah. In 2005. 2006. And we were like, YouTube had just come out. We were already making videos, but like individually sending them to people like.

Just like buddies. And like, we had like an email list And I would do shows and try to get people to sign up on the email list. And you get like, four a show.

You were doing YouTube and then you're

like, your own way.

And that. And then we came up with the idea. And then we immediately got like 200 people following us. And then. And then we bailed on the. That idea because we're like, now this isn't working. Like, let's just seems like a lot. Yeah, we'll just make up our own sketches. These ideas suck. And. And then we already had, like, the 200 followers who were like, well, we can't change our name now.

We wrote every episode. We produced it all. It was everything from, like, the very first idea to, like, the last editing session was all us.

Yeah. And then when it came out, I went in, like, the Starbucks I would come go to down the street from my house every day, and they, like, never bothered to even look up from, like. That's so wild. And so I, like, what was. Was it. How did you guys come up with it? You just, like, sitting around shooting the shit?

Yeah, we was. Someone gave us, like, the opportunity to shoot in an office building. And so we're already doing sketches and. And doing stuff, like, around our house where. And we lived. Blake and myself and Kyle Newcheck, our director, who played Carl the drug dealer on the show. We all lived in the Workaholics house.

Oh, so that was, like, actually your house. I know you guys were roommates, but. I know.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was actually our house. And then. So we were already filming sketches there, where we're just, like, roommates and friends.

And Ders would come over and we'd shoot sketches, and then someone gave us the office, and we were like, oh, maybe we act like we work here.

And then we live together in the house and we work there. And then Comedy Central saw that, and they were like, yo, this is.

We got something here, in fact, that

we were so bad at, like, the business side of things, they emailed our YouTube page because they didn't know how to get in contact with us, and we didn't know how to check the email portion of the YouTube. And so we didn't see it for, like, three months. And we finally saw it. We're like, oh, Comedy Central is trying to get a hold of us. And. And we, like, there was. There was just, like, all. All Four of us were around the. The computer, like, trying to dictate say on this email. Like, okay, say yo, what's up? Don't say yo. Don't say yo. It's got to be business profession. And. And then we smoking cigarette.

I don't know, man.

I don't know.

Yeah. Just drinking monster energy drinks. And we sent this email and they got back to us and then we went in and took a meeting. And then, you know, and they were like, oh, we thought you guys were like, cool, like, just doing your own thing and, like, didn't care about Comedy Central and that's why we didn't get back to you. And we're like, yep, we're too cool. That's cool.

We just. We're willing to hear you out.

And then they met us and they were like, oh, we realize you're not very much want this.

That's so sick. That's like the coolest thing ever.

One funny thing when we were pitching the show is they were like, we love this. We love the. The workaholics idea. You know, pitch that show. So we went and pitched the junior execration execs, and then we had to go pitch the vice president and then finally the president.

And so we pitched the junior execs,

the guys that work at Comedy Central. Like, I know everyone could be buttoned up, but were they kind of cool?

Yeah, yeah, they were cool. And they know talent. Well, Walter Newman, who was the, like, super junior exec that sort of found us.

Well, yeah, but he also was like. He wasn't that much older than us, but also like, Like, I don't even. He was like. I don't even know if he had a real title yet. He was just sort of like in the office and was like, I found these guys and. But he was awesome. And. And then Seth Cohen was our other executive. But we liked the Workaholics idea. But we were. We had this idea. We had been working on a. A concept rap album called the Wizards, where we're gangster rapping wizards from another realm.

So we lines like straight out of Mordor. Four more wizards come to your door. Don't set to us because we the so so rores.

They were getting, like, millions and hundreds, hundreds of thousands of views. And we were like, oh, this is what's taking off for us. And so we're like, yeah, workaholics. That sounds cool. But what we really want to do is us as gangster rapping wizards from another realm. And a portal opens up in a Malt Li liquor cabinet in South Central. And we walk out and everyone thinks we're Klux Klan because of our pointy hats, but we're not. We're wizards. And they're like, don't pitch that.

Yeah. And then we. And then we went and pitched the vice president after the junior execs told us not to pitch it. And then at the end, we pitched it again. And the junior execs are like, oh, they're fucking blowing it. They're blowing it.

Yeah. Yeah. And we had whiteboards up and, like, everything was. You know, we tried to keep it. Ders worked in a writer's room. He worked for. He was, like, a assistant, like a PA for that show Bones. Oh, you remember that show Bones. So he worked on that show, like, getting coffees and. And he would, like, peek in and, like, see, like, how they would break down story ideas and take photos of the whiteboards and. And come back to us and be like, okay, this is what we have to do.

Okay. There's three acts. And then when we sold Workaholics, it was crazy because now we're, like, the bosses.

And we would be, like, running the writers room during the day. And we hired Kevin Etten, who's our showrunner, and he was super talented guy, and he was, like, helping us craft it, but at night, we were reading books on how to write for television.

Yeah. And then during the day were, like, writing the show.

Did you guys go to college?

Ders went to Wisconsin. Blake, like, finished as we were starting.

I know. He finished. And you went to Long beach. And then both. Kyle went to LA film school. And then I dropped out of community college and started to do standup.

And at community college, where we were. You. You can't. No, you can't. You can't learn anything like that, dude.

I went to community college, and it

was community college in Orange County. Occ. Go, Pirates.

Yeah. And I met. I met Blake and Kyle Day 1 of community college in Impro.

And we were like. I thought Blake was super funny, and he thought, you know, I was too. And so afterwards, we were like, hey, what's up? Maybe we should write together. And guys are so silly.

So what are you. And. And we had, like, had a video off where, like, we showed what videos we did in high school. That's awesome. And then their videos were, like, like, much better production value than. Than my videos.

They're from Northern California, and I'm from Omaha. And then we just. We met there. Yeah.

So, like, I remember one time we were drunk and I was doing, like, thanksg. Giving up at their, like, friends giving up at their place.

And so I'm up there in the Bay Area with all their old friends, and I'm pissing into a bush as his friend is, like, puking next to me. And then Kyle goes, why are you pissing so close to my friend?

And then we got in a fist fight.

Yeah. And that was, like, our big fight. Yeah.

can, and so it's done, but it wasn't out yet. And we. They greenlit SE Season two, so we knew we were going to get paid so huge. Yeah, it was awesome. And so we were all, like. We all needed new cars, and on the same weekend, we all went out and bought new cars, and I bought a Camaro super Sport convert, and we all bought, like, that kind of match for personalities and characters on the show. So I bought that car. Blake's whole thing is like. He's like, oh, I hate when people recognize me. But then he dresses in, like, neon colors and has crazy hair, and so it's sort of like, do you hate it?

I'm actually conflicted.

He's like, I hate it. Don't. Don't look at me. Meanwhile, he's Sideshow Bob, and he got a gift Jeep wrangler, but with a American flag wrap and an American bald eagle on the front. And then Anders bought a sensible Volvo, and we're like. We all, like, pulled up with our new cars, and we're like, check it out.

I. I worked. No, I was. Quit. I actually quit a few years before that. I. I, like, booked a couple commercials, and back then, commercials used to pay heavy pay really well. So I remember I, like. I booked, like, two national commercials in a year and was like, I quit. I'm doing comedy full time, which meant I just, like, was at home.

Yeah. Like, had enough to survive.

[Adam DeVine]

To survive. And Then I was. We all lived together and so I was just at the house. The guys, they didn't allow me to run the AC during the day and it was so hot. So it'd be like, I'm just like sweating and. And like I would like get in the shower and like, just not dry off. Just like walk around the house naked to like stay cool.

And. And then I was like, I honestly was like, I wish I could like, go to work or something because I'm so bored. And then I would just. Just like, you know, go do like my 10 minute spot that night at the Improv or whatever. And it was like all in a day's work.

And it's so funny to just like be like, well, gosh, this is. Yeah, I'm living the dream. And I can't even.

They can't even air conditioning. They're like, well, we're not home. And I'm like, oh, off. I should have just ran it. They never would have known.
