I don't know. I mean, I definitely, like. I don't know. I really think that when you have a kid, it's like, it's. It seriously radicalized me having a child because I was like, this is 100% unfair.

Like, this is all me all the time. And if he does help, why does he get a ribbon? Yeah, it's like, I did this. Yeah, you fudgeing should.

Yeah. They get a ribbon for, like, the bare men. And then we're sitting there just fudgeing, sweating our tits off and, like, bleeding from the nipples, and, like, everybody's just like, yeah, but the mom guilt's pretty bad, right? And you're like, am I supposed to feel fucking shitty? Because I'm, like, doing everything, and it's the idea that, like, men have said for years that, like, women are trapping them with babies.

I'm like, we are the ones who get trapped.

So, like, I just. All of it kind of. There's so many layers to it, but I think that. I think it just kind of was like, yeah, dude, I'm doing this, like, solo, so, like, might as well just,

Yeah. You know, and that's not to say that he wasn't doing anything because he. He's. He's a good dad, but, like, it's what it takes to be a good dad is just, like, not enough bare min, you know, so. And he was doing more than the bare minimum, I have to say that.

But men can get away with. I know you have to say his side, but men, as a general standpoint can get away with just being like, put the cup in the dishes.

Yeah. And I just kind of, like. It's crazy how, like, I'm less stressed out that's huge. Doing it by myself, that's really.

I mean, you're just an independent gal. I think that's what it is.

I think it's that I. I think it's that having a husband is a fucking job.

Yeah. And it's like you're adding layers of jobs. Yeah.

I'm like, let's get rid of one of these jobs because I can't do all of them.

You can't be a deadbeat mom.

You can be deadbeat dad. You can't be a Debbie mom.

You could be a deadbeat mom, but, like, you know, the consequences are. No, I wouldn't, because I fucking love being a mom.

That's like, the thing when I was reading your book and. Fantastic, by the way. I just get that right off. I'm like, your biggest fan. Like, while I was reading your book, I'm like, I know I told you before that I, like, watched your Amazon thing when you were getting into JFL and all that. And I was thinking about the other day, and I'm not just tooting your horn because you're here and sitting in front of me, but you could toot it. When people ask, like, who's your favorite comic? It really is. I think it's you. I really think it's you.

Yeah, so I did the audiobook. It was kind of crazy. Like, the parts that fudge me up were, like, kind of shocking, you know? Like, the part about my sister, I got, like, a little choked up, but it was like, I've talked about her so much, but there was this one part about, like, miscarriage and, like, how there's, like. Like, wanting something that nobody that can give you. And that part, like, me up, like, I couldn't read. I couldn't get through it. And I was like, I had to, like, break and, like, go outside and, like, go for a walk and came back and, like, sat down to read it again and was like, nope, I can't. I can't read this.

Is someone watching you do this? Like, is it in a studio?

Yeah.

There's, like, two people that. I don't know.

I'm sure it happens all the time, though.

I bet it does. But it's like, for a comic, you're like, I don't want to cry in front of these people.

Like, yeah, that's so brutal. And then you come back and be like, ah, I can't. Yeah, one more second.

And I just, like, finally I was like, all right, well, I guess I'm just gonna be crying during this part. And, like, so I don't remember which chapter it is, but I. I definitely, at one point, like, you can hear me, like, just, like, choking. You know what I mean? And it's funny because I sat down to write the book and I was like, I just want to write. I don't want to try to make this funny. And there's funny parts to it, but overall, I think the book is, like, it's pretty earnest.

You know what I mean? And it's. There's half part funny, half part honest, and you're going to cry and you're going to laugh. Yeah, well, a little more crying. I don't know.

It's.

It's a healthy balance of both.

And, yeah, I can tell you've been. You've gone to therapy. Yeah, for sure.

Yeah. But did that feel more like mortgage on that guy's house.

Yeah. And I'm sure you did. Yeah, I. What's the going rate for therapy at the moment?

[Rosebud Baker]

So I've been. I sort of have been grandfathered in.

What does that mean?

[Rosebud Baker]

Like, you stabilized to a certain. Basically, I'm, like, rent stabilized with my therapist because I started seeing him in, like, 2012.

[Grace]

So they were, like, fresh out of school or something?

[Rosebud Baker]

No, he's been around, but, like, his rates have gone up.

[Grace]

Oh.

[Rosebud Baker]

Since we started working together, and I've just kind of been like, yeah, but come on, Peter.

[Grace]

Yeah, that's actually really kind of them.

Yeah.

Because does it usually go up, or do you.

It does. Like, usually it goes up, but I've just been like, look, we got to keep it at this. Like, I'm not. You know what I mean? We got to keep it. And also, like, I. I think he knows that if he goes up, like, I'm not. If there's any reason for me to stop going to therapy, I will stop.

You gotta take it. Yeah.

Yeah. But, like, I. And he knows I'll come back for, like, three weeks at a time, and then I'll leave again.

Like, there's a lot of that with me and my therapist where I'm. I do a lot of, like, cat and mouse, you know?

Is it when you, like. Like, you really hit on something?

[Rosebud Baker]

Like, I'm just gonna give it, like, three weeks, 100%. It's always when he says some shit that I know is true and I don't want to hear it.

[Grace]

Yeah.

And then I'm like, yeah, all right, well, I'll see you in a month.

[Grace]

Yeah. I feel like we got really close to the truth, and I'm going to have to see you.

[Rosebud Baker]

But I always. I always say. I'm like, I swear to God, I'm such a fuck. I'm like a fuck boy. Where I'm like, this has been so good for me. Like, I can't wait to talk more about it next week. And then I, like, go dark for, like, six months.

And he's like, hey, you good?

Oh, no, I've just actually been writing my book. It's like, the same thing.

[Rosebud Baker]

Yeah.

Is it like therapy?

[Rosebud Baker]

It's like, parts of it were therapeutic, but overall, like, not really, because, you know, writing is so, like, therapy. There's something about therapy that kind of feels relaxing, you know, if you let it.

[Grace]

Yeah.

Writing never feels relaxing. Like, really? Yeah. I mean, I. It's funny because, like, the only time I ever enjoy writing is, like, while I'm doing it, but I. I hate everything leading up to it, and I hate everything following that.

Yeah.

Because I would take you as someone who likes to write, but the before and after makes sense. It's like, you have to write because you have a deadline or you have to write new jokes. And then the after part is like, well, we could tweak some things. Like. No, I. I'm not tweaking it.

That's like, what I wrote. I don't want to fucking tweak it. I don't want to go over it. I don't. I'm like. I want to hand it to somebody and be like, you fix it. I don't. And also, like, as a comedy writer, I write with people.

[Grace]

Yeah.

[Rosebud Baker]

So, like, writing by myself and writing with. No, like, this doesn't have to be funny. It doesn't have to be fucking. It's. You can just write it and it's done and it's there. Yeah, that's. So that part of it was really hard because at least with comedy, you're writing within the boundaries of, like, this has to be funny. So that limits you. But it also kind of expands the possibilities because you're working within a framework, whereas, like, a book, it's like, you can go on and on and on.

Yeah. It's like a prompt almost.

[Rosebud Baker]

Yeah.

And I just. I'm, like, kind of, like, nerding out about the whole, like, process of writing a book. Like, do you name the chapters first and then go from there?

People.

I didn't do any of that. I had no idea what the book was gonna be. I started writing. I had a bunch of essays. None of them made any sense. None of them. I didn't know how they fit together.

And then. But the book was done. I was like, we have enough here for a full book. But I don't know how all of this fits together. And I was like, I wanna bring in somebody else to look at this. And we brought in a writer named Caroline Ryder, and she's fucking great. And she's written a bunch of books.

What's her. When you. When you write. When you're someone like Caroline Ryder, do you have, like, a niche of writing books?

[Rosebud Baker]

Well, I know that most of her stuff is ghost writing.

[Grace]

Okay, gotcha.

[Rosebud Baker]

Well, not most of it, but, like, her, she's written a bunch on her own, but she's also done a lot of ghost writing. And I was like, I don't want. You don't need to do any writing here. We need to restructure, and I need to put this in the shape of a book, and, like, and I need to see how it can all flow together.

Yeah.

And that was. She helped me figure out how, like, these stories about motherhood would lead into stories about my past and how beautiful she was. Awesome. She saw it first, and I was like, oh, my God. Yeah. So that's, like, how we. We put it all together. And then I went through it with her and. And was like, okay, I'm just gonna do a joke pass through everything. So as you're, like, restructuring things, I'll go through it. And it was like a waterfall effect. So she would, like, restructure the chapter, and then I would do a joke pass. And then we did that, like, over and over again.

But it, like, it flows so well. Like, I've. I don't read much, and it. And I read very slow, but I actually, I was at. Let me. Let me just pivot real quick. I want to say sorry for the text I sent you.

it wasn't preachy, but it did. I've always had it in the back of my head of the whole sober, curious thing.

stumbled into it, quite literally, pretty much like. Yeah, stumbled and, like. You met that woman? Yes, like, bumped into it.

Literally bumped into a lady, asked her to come drink with me.

Was she older or younger?

[Rosebud Baker]

I have no idea. Like, she was around my age, but also, like, she was, like, a heroin addict, so you can't really tell how old they are because they just, like, stay young forever.

Oh, I thought you were gonna say, like, the age about 15. Oh, they stayed ganny.

Yeah. I mean, they. She was like. She could have been 40 and she could have been 20.

Yeah.

You know what I mean? Like, I have no idea how old she was, but she was like. I remember being hammered and inviting her to come drink at the bar with me and my friend. And was it the bar across.

It was on Sullivan and. And Bleaker.

Just because while I'm reading, I'm trying to picture where it is.

Yeah. So it was, like, one. One street behind. So it's like, what is it? It's McDougal and then Thompson and then Sullivan.

Those streets fucked me up.

Anyway, whatever. It's like one of those. But it was a bar on Sullivan street. And then I remember being, like, the only ones there.

And you were solo.

No. Oh, maybe I can't remember.

I literally can't remember if it was me and my friend or if he had peeled off at that point. I really don't know. It was one of those nights.

I don't know why I'm asking such specifics about that night.

I'm like, for real. I was like, blackout for most of it. And when I go through that chapter, a lot of it is. This is what I remember. But I become a pretty unreliable narrator in that period of time in my life because I don't fucking remember most of it. I was like, blackout drunk for most of it.

Totally fair. I. And I couldn't imagine, like, for that chapter, just having to be like, wait, what was it?

Yeah, how did it so hard? I made so many calls.

I made so many calls to people that don't want to talk to me anymore. And I was like, hey, so sorry. Can you fill me in on, like, some of this? You know, but it was, like, it was hard to write Calls. Yeah.

Very weird. Very weird calls where I was like,

to start with, hey, how you been?

No, my. So, like, we. You know how in like 12 step programs, you're supposed to do amends? Like, you're supposed to, like, call people up and apologize. So I sat down with my sponsor and, like, told her everything. And she was like, okay, so the apology that you're gonna make to these people is because all of them have said that they never wanna see you again. You're gonna never see them again. And I was so pissed.

I was so pissed.

Cause I was like, the apologies are kind of for you.

I know. I was kinda like. I was like, I wanna do that. I wanna, like, redeem myself. I'm sober now. I want that hero's welcome kind of thing. Yeah.

Because that's kind of what it feels like. Cause those people do not to hear from you. Probably.

Yeah. None of these things. Like, it's like, yeah, it's part of

the steps, but the. The steps more for you.

Yeah. And so it's like, hey, sorry, I fudged you over a thousand different ways, but can you do me a favor? Yeah. You know what I mean?

And it's like, she was like, no, you're just not going to call these people.

That's actually pretty badass of her to say.

It was so fudgeing hard. That's hard, though, because I was such a fudgeing, loudmouth piece of shit and really wanted to, like, get like, a pat on the back from these people and. And show them that I had my together now. And, like, I just didn't get the. I didn't get a chance to do that. And there was, out of everyone, two people who ended up reaching out to me.

Was this during your getting sober phase or when you were writing the book?

This was like, no, no. This was maybe seven or eight years after I'd gotten sober.

Oh, shit.

That they reached out and they were like, hey, I hope you're well. You know what I mean? And I was like, oh, my God. Like, the chance to, like, talk to these people was like, fucking. Holy fuck.

Was it the ones you'd hope would reach out?

No.

never the ones you want.

I literally have a story like that, which is like, a lot of things are adding up to. I'm probably gonna take. I've taken breaks here and there, but I think I gotta take a longer one. Oh. Is what it is.

From drinking.

From drinking. Yeah. I have a story of, like in 2023, I think, and I talk about this all the time, but I thought I was crazy, but I was just doing. Going out like seven days a week and doing blow.

And so I was like, oh, I'm crazy. I'm gonna come down. I'm a crazy person. So I checked myself in. Well, first my mom Came and picked me up in New York from Boston. And she's like, are you sure? That's like, kind of like a whole thing. If you go. I'm like, no, I gotta go. I'm crazy.

Yeah.

[Grace]

And I went. And as soon as I got there, I was like, I am not crazy. Yeah, but they were like, you're bipolar. I'm like, did you hear the part where I say I'm going out seven days a week and doing like. Did you get that part?

Yeah.

They're like, yeah, bipolar.

[Rosebud Baker]

I know.

And then I did the. The meds and I was like, I don't.

I don't know.

But my sister still insists.

to just take away this one thing that's literally making my moods go crazy.

And then, see. But I really wanted to be bipolar because I really just didn't want it to be the drinking. I was like, if I'm bipolar, then at least I can, like, keep drinking. Which I didn't really understand that bipolar people, like, when they're manic, like, drink and do drugs like crazy. So.

Yeah. So it's, like, kind of hard to.

It is hard to just figure out.

Yeah. And the other thing that makes me not think I'm a pillar is because I don't get, like, the crazy, manic, fun, crazy, awesome. I just get sad.

I really wanted to be like. I was like, I want to be like Robin Williams or something.

But I think once we had a kid together, it was like the amount of time that my work was taking up because it was bringing in the main, like the income that took precedence and that meant that, like, that was taking away a resource for him, which was time. And like, in an industry where you have to put time in and you have to like, do face to face fucking. You know, I get why it like, fell apart.

I was like, justin. And then I was like, justin. And he was, like, fully ignoring me. And then I reached out, and I remember how my hand got bigger as I reached towards him.

I blew it. I fucking blew it. And then I immediately started doing, like, girl math, like, astrology in my head.
