Members Reviews: Gripping tale of race relations told through the lens of a Southern family Not a book for the faint of heart. We will start there. This is a story from another time (around World War I), when mores and attitudes towards race were different. If you can't bear to read about that, then don't. With that said, I loved this book. I have read a ton of L'Engle's fiction and non-fiction, and this book featured much her signature charm: namely fantastic wordplay and subtle meditations of living gracefully in a fallen world. The book was a page-turner for me, and I was really gripped by the tale. It primarily tells the tale of a young English woman who marries into a rambling, old Southern family who live in an equally rambling beach house. She learns the stories of some spinster aunts and gets involved into some really big happenings. Totally good read and a total surprise. I had no idea this book was available, so I was very happy to download this onto my Kindle and into my mind. Five Stars L'Engle tells a must-read story about the ante-bellum South. Not for children or the faint of heart. ... is an older story dealing with the conflicts of good and evil This is an older story dealing with the conflicts of good and evil. How unwillingness to compromise can cause a great deal of damage. There is also the conflict of how people would manipulate innocence to get their own agenda. It is an excellent read and have read it several times. Each time there is something new to ponder. Beautiful and painful. I think this is one of the most exceedingly human stories I've ever read. It tackles subjects which bring much discomfort and anger to many, even to this day. However, it also brings to light how very akin we all are to one another; within the span of emotions, emotional experiences, and drives. There is so much here, and you will ache for the stories each character has to tell. My heart broke for the love shown by certain characters. I'll say no more, I don't want to spoil anything. However, this is a story that will stay with you for awhile. It certainly will stay with me. It will also most likely cause you to think about deeper subjects; from what makes a family, to how the nation was built. Last thing: I think there are many heroes in this book and all for different reasons. People can change what the future holds, and if we try to act with love and the knowledge born of it, we may not always win or come out unscathed - but we can build bridges to light.

Title: The Ransomed Crown Subtitle: The Saga of Roland Inness, Volume 4 Author: Wayne Grant Narrator: James Young Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 59 mins Language: English Release date: 12-08-17 Publisher: Wayne Grant Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: King Richard has made peace with Saladin, but must run a gauntlet of enemies to get home from the Crusade. While England waits for her King, Prince John spares neither lives nor fortune to usurp his brother's crown. Roland Inness and Millicent de Laval once more find themselves at the centre of a growing civil war. Each will play a crucial role in deciding who will ultimately sit on the throne of England. The Ransomed Crown is the rousing conclusion to The Saga of Roland Inness, though not likely to be the end of Roland's story. The author is working on a new Roland Inness tale to be released in late 2017. Members Reviews: Outstanding finish to the Roland Innes Four-Book Longbow Saga! The fourth and final (?) book in the Roland Inness series, The Ransomed Crown, is in many ways the best in the series. And the series itself is great. The characters have continued to evolve and develop. Old characters are reunited to face new challenges. Newly introduced characters are individually drawn, unique and speak in their own voices. And there is action aplenty. I particularly enjoy the author's battle scenes. Bloody, exciting, front row action, full of surprises. And never boring. How many ways can you cleave an opponent's head? Countless... never boring or repetitive as so many battle scenes are in other books or movies. And the author's West Point and Army background shows through in the tactics employed. Though this is the billed as the last book of the series, I wouldn't be surprised to see future adventures with this group. Not everything is tied up in a neat little bow at the end of the series. Don't get me wrong; it is a satisfying ending, but there could be more adventures ahead. The door is open. Let's hope so. Though billed as youth books, people of all ages will enjoy the excellent writing, strong and well-developed characters and the ever twisting and turning plotline. Great dialogue, great description, great books. Read them. You'll be delighted you did. Loved it! I just finished this series and was very happy with it. The story was good, with enough detail vs. action. The battle scenes were well described without boring me to tears by the time they were done. The characters were likable and flawed at the same time. The dialogue was good. And important to me, the writer managed to tell a great tale without feeling the need to succumb to frequent vulgarity...especially with word usages that were probably not even known it that time period. And there was great romance without it needing to sink into overdone sexual imagery; two things that made me put down Steven McKay after only a couple of chapters. I liked this series and am looking forward to more from Wayne Grant in the future. A thoroughly good read The characters in this novel are both complex and interesting. While battles occur and there is a background story of evolving love between two characters there are no gory descriptions of violence or steamy sex scenes. This novel is the culmination of a story arc that built over the first two novels in the series and ties up the story line nicely while still leaving opportunities for the author to follow the characters in future stories. I'm looking forward to where Mr. Grant takes them next. The Adventures Just Keep Coming! I have enjoyed all the books in this well written series.

Title: Alias Grace Author: Margaret Atwood Narrator: Sarah Gadon, Margaret Atwood Format: Unabridged Length: 15 hrs and 56 mins Language: English Release date: 11-02-17 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 13 votes Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: From the number one New York Times best-selling author of The Handmaid's Tale Soon to be a Netflix Original series, Alias Grace takes listeners into the life of one of the most notorious women of the 19th century. It's 1843, and Grace Marks has been convicted for her involvement in the vicious murders of her employer and his housekeeper and mistress. Some believe Grace is innocent; others think her evil or insane. Now serving a life sentence, Grace claims to have no memory of the murders. An up-and-coming expert in the burgeoning field of mental illness is engaged by a group of reformers and spiritualists who seek a pardon for Grace. He listens to her story while bringing her closer and closer to the day she cannot remember. What will he find in attempting to unlock her memories? Captivating and disturbing, Alias Grace showcases best-selling, Booker Prize-winning author Margaret Atwood at the peak of her powers. Cover photo by Sabrina Lantos, courtesy of Halfire Entertainment. The miniseries Alias Grace is a Halfire Entertainment Production made for CBC and Netflix. Members Reviews: The brilliance of Atwood's merging of truth and fiction The story! Femme Fatale or Innocent Maiden? Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood tells the true story of 19th century alleged murderess Grace Marks. At age 15/16, Grace Marks was convicted of killing her employer and his mistress with a fellow member of âthe helpâ, James McDermott. Graceâs trial was highly publicized across Canada, the US, and Europe (she was an Amanda Knox of her time, if you will, more on that later.) Her story soon became both sensationalized and romanticized, and the true story seemed to fall by the wayside as the years went on. Throughout Alias Grace, Atwood illustrates a system inherently skewed against someone like Grace because of her sex, age, and socio-economic status. At one point, a character notes that if Grace had come from a wealthy family her âmadnessâ wouldnât have been handled as it truly was. After the murder trial, Graceâs death sentence was changed to life in prison. However, for the first part of her imprisonment she was committed to an asylum, where Atwood alludes to abuse and sexual assault. I do not doubt it of that period, especially with a woman in that situation. Alias Grace is a framed story, with Grace recounting her side of the story to young Dr. Simon Jordan. Dr. Jordan has foregone a traditional medical practice in favor of studying the mind and mental illness. As a forerunner of the field (although Dr. Jordan is fiction), he seeks to prove Graceâs innocence by uncovering the truth of the events, as well as Graceâs mental state. It goes without saying that in the 19th Century, the majority of mental illnesses were not yet âdiscoveredâ, researched, and diagnosedâthus, the individual likely would have been locked up and forgotten. I particularly enjoyed Graceâs friendship with fellow maid Mary Whitney, as well as her doctor-patient relationship with Simon Jordan. Mary Whitney is often a foil to Grace; an outspoken young woman in a time when such behavior was viewed with suspicion. In fact, Grace and Mary were so close that I sometimes wondered if there was a Fight Club situation going on with them. I wonât get into spoilers, but there is a hypnosis event that occurs toward the end of the book that will both jolt and chill the reader.

Members Reviews: Lovely This audiobook is beautiful. The voices give it shape, warmth, character, depth. I couldnt stop listening! It was if I was mesmerically floating in the air between Tom and Evie, anxious to pass on their next letter, waiting with bated breath at all it would contain and all that would be left unsaid. There are no words to describe this... There are no words to describe this story but I will try. I loved this story. Sometimes there are stories that don't leave you, I think this is one of them! It grabbed me from the beginning and didn't let go, I wanted to find out how everything was going to work out but I didn't want it to end. The narration was perfect! A beautiful and mesmerizing tale This book was beautifully written and the cast that read it really brought the story to life. I had tears in my eyes! This gives The Notebook a run for its money. Is it Love? Are We Just Friends? What did you love best about Last Christmas in Paris? The novel was written in correspondence form. It requires the reader to pay attention to the changes all the time. I thought that the character development was wonderful. The horrors of war were discussed. PTSD though not used in that form, the psychological horror of battle brought up and discussed. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? Due to the format, no it would definitely require a few sittings. Any additional comments? It was frustrating that all that letter writing and no one could ask if it was love? Even after the young girl joins the war effort, still no I love you. Hmm!? I was surprised to see all the narrators. I will have to listen to the novel again to gain the different perspectives of all the voices.

As these three daughters of Ireland seek to make their way in a world once again beset by dark forces, Santa Montefiore shows us once more why she is one of the best-loved storytellers at work today. Members Reviews: My first Santa Montefiore book! What did you love best about The Daughters of Ireland? I didn't listen to the first two books so the characters where new to me. Loved the story! The only thing I didn't like is I was left with what's going to happen and then looked to see if there was a sequel only finding that there where two previous books. Looking for the next book in the series! What did you like best about this story? I loved how the different characters intertwined. Repeat of Daughters of Castle Deverill I was expecting this book to be the third book in a series that started with The Girl in the Castle. This book, although a good story & beautifully narrated, is a repeat of the second book Daughters of Castle Deverill. I was looking forward to the story moving on in the series so this book was a disappointment. Better than the 1st one. Much better than the first one. I loved all of the new storylines and can't wait for the next installment. Daughters of Ireland ok Hoping for a bit of historical fiction but this was not that book. A long book which ended with a few unanswered and confusing story lines. Isn't this just the second book again? This has to be a mistake. please let us know when the actual book is released.

Title: See What I Have Done Author: Sarah Schmidt Narrator: Jennifer Woodward, Erin Hunter, Garrick Hagon Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs and 44 mins Language: English Release date: 08-01-17 Publisher: Random House Audio Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 107 votes Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: Lizzie Borden took an ax And gave her mother 40 whacks When she saw what she had done She gave her father 41. Or did she? In this riveting debut novel, See What I Have Done, Sarah Schmidt recasts one of the most fascinating murder cases of all time into an intimate story of a volatile household and a family devoid of love. On the morning of August 4, 1892, Lizzie Borden calls out to her maid, "Someone's killed Father." The brutal ax murder of Andrew and Abby Borden in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts, leaves little evidence and many unanswered questions. While neighbors struggle to understand why anyone would want to harm the respected Bordens, those close to the family have a different tale to tell - of a father with an explosive temper, a spiteful stepmother, and two spinster sisters, with a bond even stronger than blood, desperate for their independence. As the police search for clues, Emma comforts an increasingly distraught Lizzie, whose memories of that morning flash in scattered fragments. Had she been in the barn or the pear arbor to escape the stifling heat of the house? When did she last speak to her stepmother? Were they really gone, and would everything be better now? Shifting among the perspectives of the unreliable Lizzie; her older sister, Emma; the housemaid, Bridget; and the enigmatic stranger, Benjamin, the events of that fateful day are slowly revealed through a high-wire feat of storytelling. Members Reviews: Rambling saved by narrators. This story is told from four character's povs. The problem is that the writing style and rhythm barely changed from person to person. Even the narrators had trouble sometimes making the writing sound different from one character to the next. But it is the performances, I think, that saves this, which may be why the audio is getting higher reviews than the book. Frankly, the story begins to ramble and get down right silly at times, in its theory of what took place. I found myself tuning out or shaking my head while listening. A caveat: Maybe I am too much of a realist to take this book seriously. I prefer to stick to nonfiction, but this book didn't convince me otherwise. Beautiful cover art. Disappointing. I was so looking forward to this one. Narration is boring and the story is so disjointed. Nothing new and fun about it. Very Weird Writing, Characters Too Similar Very weird prose. It seems more like a college exercise with odd repetitions and everyone putting macabre things in their mouth. Really hated this story. The acting so so. Not recommended at All. part missing? This book had all the potential of being excellent, but then, when it becomes most interesting, it abruptly stops. What gives ms Schmidt? Well-narrated, intense story! I'm not a Lizzie theorist, so I don't know how many times she's been put into fictional context, but this version of her life as an infantilized manipulator got under my skin. I gave the novel a small demerit for inducing nausea with exquisite detail, and then keeping it up, and up, and up....

Great storytelling Really good. I love stories. I love stories that characters are relatable to. Flawed, but still not giving up. This story carries with it the prevalence of sisterhood, in the way that sister's are flawed. But, yet still trying! Gripping read This book left me wanting more. The characters are so vivid I'd love to know what happens next.
