I took a pay cut to go sell jackets from the produce section. Them watermelons and pumpkins was heavy.

Hey, I just took a paycheck. And then mama just took a nap, the whole thing. Because I. The first one she took.

I went to Wendy's every day almost and got two double stacks. A Biggie fry and a Biggie Coke.

We went to Dairy Queen.

Four dollars and 77 cents.

And had a fresh cut strawberries put in a box. And I mean they needed bigger straws because you was always. Y' all turning around and biting a big hump.

Back then, 24. Yeah, 24 cans. We told her, hey, next time bring two or three cases. Yeah, we want this to last for at least our drive anyway.

Oh, y' all drank 24 Coke?

We drank 24 Coke.

30 minutes.

But that was back whenever it was real Coke.

Like, I mean, this wasn't.

And you used to have them in them flat things where you had to reach in there and pull it out of between the iron.

But the trick to it was you had to turn it up and drink it all at once.

Yeah. They used to do Miller Lots.

And look, I weigh like 130 pounds of skeleton.

No, I wasn't. That's what I always when I got blame you, Beth. But anyway, hey, big old my drill. He was a good runner because he's carrying 450 and he ran everywhere we did.

Hey, I've done my last day. When we graduated, I did like 350 pushups. Okay. And I'm in dress greens. When he first done it, I said, I'm not, I'm not doing a push up. He said, you're not what?

[Rucker]

Yes, sir.

[Johnny D]

Oh, yes you are.

[Martin]

He said, oh, yeah, you are. He says, you either get out right now or he said, I'll stomp you to the ground and stand on top of you while you do them.

[Johnny D]

Yeah, get down or lay down.

[Martin]

Yeah, yeah. You gonna get down or I'll fix up. You know, I'm gonna put you down.

[Johnny D]

Yeah.

[Martin]

So, hey, then I would. So I, I'd knock out 25, jump up, he'd put his nose back on me, and I bust out laughing again. Get out. You know, it took 350 before. I said, okay, yeah, I'm. I'm not gonna win this battle.

[Rucker]

No, it took you.

[Ryan Reynolds]

I couldn't do 300.

[Martin]

That's the best shape I've been in my life.

[Rucker]

350 at a 25 piece at a time. Yeah. 14 times before. So I said, you know what?

[Martin]

Yeah. I said, yo. Kind of stupid. I said, you know, Took you too long, son.

[Johnny D]

Yeah, you're gonna be dumb.

[Martin]

You're not gonna beat this man. He's, you know, he's gonna subdue you.

[Rucker]

Yeah.

[Ryan Reynolds]

So we got no idea what his name is because I will find it.

[Martin]

Oh. Because, hey, we. We named him, you know, his name was Oliver. I don't know his last name. But we. We shortened it with big O. Then we'd never say it where you could hear it because he'd kill you if you did. Okay.

[Rucker]

But Oliver Giant, drill instructor.

[Martin]

Oh, no.

[Johnny D]

Oliver was kind of a common name back then.

[Rucker]

I'm not sergeant, but, hey, you had.

[Martin]

Yeah.

Hey, 4:50 guys running. Yeah.

I found a man who served our great country and was awarded a gold, gold star named Oliver Anderson, who was a drill sergeant.

[Martin]

That may have been him. It's been so many years, you know, that's crazy. He looked twice that big when I was, you know, when he was.

[Rucker]

Well, when you were that size. Yeah, he. Oh, he doesn't have his time.

[Martin]

Here's how bad it was. We had a new.

[Rucker]

We had a way in 68, so that wouldn't have been him.

[Martin]

Oh, yeah, yeah.

[Ryan Reynolds]

He died in Vietnam War.

[Rucker]

Yeah.

[Johnny D]

Yeah. Date doesn't line up.

[Ryan Reynolds]

When were you in Fort Benning?

[Martin]

Oh, I don't know. It was in 68. Because that's when I got drafted.

[Rucker]

Yeah.

[Ryan Reynolds]

Okay.

[Johnny D]

But hey, if he was in the. If he was in. At in Vietnam, he wouldn't have been a drill sergeant during that time. He would have, probably.

[Martin]

It depends. They could have seen him from where he was at to do war.

[Ryan Reynolds]

Yeah, I'm fine. All I know is, hey, we got one guy. That could have been him.

[Martin]

We had a drill sergeant for a couple of weeks. Well, he had a emergency problem at home, so he left. So we're all waiting for the new one to come. Okay. And we're waiting on. We're on the back step and looking, and here comes a taxicab. Okay. And the taxicab is literally, it's like this. And it is sparks coming off from the metal that is being eaten off of the bottom of that car. Well, guess what? It pulls up to our barracks, and then this monster steps out of it. That's why it was like this.

[Johnny D]

It's a big old dude, man.

[Rucker]

It's a big old.

[Martin]

£450. He done make this thing eat metal, you know, and we looked and said, we are in trouble.

[Rucker]

Yeah, we have messed up.

[Johnny D]

I watched on this, realized that the military just wasn't going to be for me.

[Ryan Reynolds]

So you chose jail instead?

[Martin]

Yeah, well, no, no, hey, that was the good thing about.

[Rucker]

Somebody was going to make him do push ups.

[Martin]

Well, that's what I was saying.

[Johnny D]

Well, it's better for you if you do do some push ups. You want to maintain your fitness there. However, nobody chooses jail. It kind of chooses you. You know what I'm saying?

[Rucker]

No, I think at some point. I think at some point you make a. You make a choice.

[Martin]

Oh, yeah, the circumstances may put you there because I know a lot of guys, okay, that was in trouble with the law and like they come before a judge and he'd say, well, young man, you've got two choices. You can do two years in the penitentiary or you can choose one of our services and serve two years in.

[Johnny D]

So I had a range.

[Martin]

Army, Air Force or Navy.

[Johnny D]

I had a friend, a lot of.

[Martin]

Them did it and look, it changed that guy's life.

[Rucker]

Yeah.

[Johnny D]

So I had a friend, his name is Levi. He's. He's. He's passed away now, but that happened to him even during my time. We were both incarcerated together as juveniles in this place called Gulf Coast. And they would send, like after you made your level and stuff, you would be able to go home on furloughs for, you know, different circumstances or reasons. Well, Levi goes home on a furlough while. While we're incarcerated at Gulf coast and he gets arrested while he's on his furlough. And while he's arrested, you know, he goes to court and they say, all right, either we're sending you to prison or you can enlist in the army. And so Levi enlists in the army. And so that was still happening, I mean, in the early 2000s. I mean, that they were still giving people.

[Martin]

Well, that was a good thing though, because I had a lot of them. It was in my platoon that turned out to be super gas. I mean, really, just the actual structure. Well, it actually done something because that's why it was good for me. Like you said, the structure of it.

[Rucker]

Yeah.

[Martin]

Okay. And somebody else. You didn't have to make decisions. They were made for you. Yo, so, you know, some people need that.

Well, my buddy, he made it through basic training. I actually, I had gotten out at that point and if you've heard my story. That's whenever I started getting connected with a lot of people that had a lot of, you know, narcotics. And I rode with his mom, his brother, and a couple other family members up to South Carolina. I forget the name of the. The fort there or. But we rode up to South Carolina to see him graduate basic training. And that's where I met a network of people to distribute drugs to. Is on that trip. Networking. It's just, look, marketing. Okay. You just got to be able to know how to.

[Martin]

Hi, here's a question. Your lifestyle from, you know, we've heard your story. Yo. Was it the circumstances or where you was born and raised or how did that. How do you.

[Rucker]

Oh, since I was going for nature versus Nurturing.

[Martin]

How did you get where you got.

[Johnny D]

I think that every person has a decision or a choice in the matter. However, I think that, you know, environmental things and different circumstances, it has an impact on it. Definitely.

[Martin]

Yeah.

[Johnny D]

You know, help, you know, help lean you towards one choice or another.

[Martin]

Okay.

[Johnny D]

For sure. But that doesn't necessarily mean that you have to be a product of your environment because there's. There's many people that don't ever fall into that way of living that come from those. Those type of.

[Martin]

You're taking responsibility for that. You was. You had the choice.

[Johnny D]

Yeah, for sure. Now I think that. I think that whenever you don't realize how many choices there are, yeah, you are going to lean in one direction or another. But, you know, and that was, for me, I didn't realize the level of choices that I actually had.

[Martin]

Okay.

[Johnny D]

Because so much was centered around just survival. I mean, when you're the, you know, only person, your color of skin in your neighborhood, you start to, like, just figure out ways to fit in and, you know, really kind of survive and be a part of. And whenever you're a part of a place in which everybody's doing things, whatever.

[Martin]

They'Re doing is what you get into.

[Johnny D]

Right, Right. But that's not to say that, you know, had you. You know, that the choice isn't there for you to go in the opposite direction. That's why I'm big on, like, just knowing that, like, your past doesn't have to define you.

[Martin]

Right.

[Johnny D]

Like, the way you behave isn't an identity. It's just what you. The choices you've been making. And that's why, you know, finding Christ and having redemption and that is so important because, look, you can make all the wrong choices.

[Martin]

Well, no, no, that's. That's why I was at. Was College.

[Johnny D]

Yeah. And still find yourself living in. In freedom. And have things that you never thought that you could have. Hence, is like the story of my life. Right. Getting here, being introduced to Christ by all of you guys, and then having people just show me a different way that, like, hey, my choices aren't limited to my circumstances. My choices are provided to me by something greater than this world and being able to walk that out. You know what I'm saying? So choosing to invest in your relationship with the Creator is. Is a sure fire plan.

[Martin]

Yeah.

[Johnny D]

Get to freedom.

[Martin]

Yeah. Right.

[Johnny D]

Like it has a hundred percent.

[Martin]

Well, that's the only place you're actually going to actually get it.

[Johnny D]

Exactly, exactly. And. And the thing is, is that in that, like, that doesn't mean everything's gonna be roses, gonna be easy, or that there won't be failures. And like, stuff's just gonna be great all the time. But what it does mean is that no matter what happens circumstantially here on earth, it has no effect on what happens in eternity.

[Martin]

Just like you. Okay. That's why your story is so powerful. I don't think I could have handled your life okay. Because all the trials and tribulations that you went through. Okay. Yeah. That's so foreign to me. Okay.

[Johnny D]

I'll tell you what's really inspiring to me these days is people realizing that joy is internal and happiness is external. Right. And like, having joy no matter their circumstances, like, man, I got real choked up this morning, and I know y' all went and did the God behind bars thing, you know, in Angola and even you went to San Quentin, right?

[Martin]

Yeah.

[Ryan Reynolds]

Do you want some good news?

[Rucker]

That's the problem.

[Ryan Reynolds]

Yeah.

[Johnny D]

Because I feel like we got real deep.

[Rucker]

Well, before we get.

[Ryan Reynolds]

While you were getting real deep, I found some.

[Rucker]

Yeah. But I got one question for Rucker. How we close? We're getting close to calf date, huh?

Yeah.

[Rucker]

Yeah. How's your woman doing? She nest in full bore or what?

Good. She's like pregnant pregnant right now. You know what I mean? Like, this.

Oh, there's different levels to pregnant. Believe that.

She got where her legs and ankles have become one. Everything down there swollen in this house.

And just started pregnant pregnant. Like, as soon as it was like, hey, I'm pregnant, I was like, okay, yeah.

Well, we're at the. Look, I'm just rubbing. I'm just rubbing feet, you know, just trying to take care of her. This. We were at the faith, family, freedom thing all Together.

[Rucker]

Yeah.

[Johnny D]

And people are like, where's your wife? I'm like, oh, she's here. She's just, like, nestled under a tree.

[Rucker]

Yeah.

[Martin]

They have found.

[Rucker]

She has found the one. She's found the one Fan.

[Johnny D]

Yeah.

That man had a big impact on my life.

[Rucker]

I found the 1968 yearbook of Fort Benning, Georgia, and found the picture of every drill sergeant they had, and he found big Oliver. And there's two right here in the middle that really match the description of maybe six, five. Smokey the bear hat. His name is William Quick, and his name is Lester Lamar, though, so there's no Oliver's.

[Johnny D]

No Oliver.

[Martin]

Well, we come up with that.

We were so scared of we.

[Rucker]

There wasn't. I looked all over for sigh. This is company A. It's a legitimate yearbook. Somebody had.

From 1968. And then I was like, there is a page of all drill sergeants. And when I saw that dude, I said, what is this?

But it says drill. So all these guys have drill sergeant under their name?

[Rucker]

Yeah, I'm going with William. Yeah. You say what you want to, but if big Willie come after me.

I don't know if they were hey dudes or young bros or what. They were. Yeah. But look, we got to an event. We were. We were doing the event together, and we shared a hotel room at night to save money.

[Martin]

And they. The gas mask.

I said, go. You got. They got to go somewhere.

Yeah, you got to take him. So not bad. Yeah.

And I'm. This coming from a guy who's got his own strong foot odor. Me, like, because I sweat so bad. Yeah. That's why I wear, like, you know, cotton wicked socks and all those things, like, to make it where it's tolerable.

Crocs and socks is tough.

[Johnny D]

You do things you need to.

[Rucker]

Yeah. To try to, like. Especially if I'm be somewhere where I have to take my shoes off or something. Like, you know, then I'm like, oh, boy.

But a lot of places where you have to take your shoes off.

[Rucker]

No, once I, once I've determined that that's the requirement, I don't go there anymore. And if it ever, if it ever gets to the point where somebody's like, hey, I wish anymore.

[Johnny D]

What do you wear fishing. What's your. What shoes you wear when you're fishing?

[Rucker]

Either tennis shoes or flip flops. That's only two.

[Martin]

Hey though those people that bass fish for pros, I. Most of them don't wear 10 shoes.

[Rucker]

Yeah, they, they barefoot a lot.

[Martin]

Yeah, they barefoot a lot. Not this guy that's like guy with Jason.

[Rucker]

As a guy who sat over here while y' all were in that deep conversation trying to get a fish fin out of his finger. I don't want one in my toe because this one in my middle finger hurts pretty bad now. And it's still, it still ain't come.

[Ryan Reynolds]

To what you were doing.

[Rucker]

Yeah, I got, I got a fan from a fish's belly in my finger. We should not come out.

[Ryan Reynolds]

The greatest redneck footwear. And I would put hey dudes at the.

[Rucker]

But like I wear flip flops if I got somebody fishing with me. But if I'm by myself, I wear tennis shoes for a little extra grip on that boat ramp so I don't bust my butt when I'm getting in because I have to walk the trailer and all that kind of stuff.

[Johnny D]

So you know what's become kind of my favorite ones is they're not crocs, but they're the ones that huck makes y'.

[Rucker]

[Johnny D]

So I bought them at the honey Hole. The there. It's like a croc esque shoe. Extra tough.

[Ryan Reynolds]

Makes them.

[Johnny D]

Well, no, they, they make a version of it. But these ain't.

[Martin]

Hey man, crocs might.

You're like six years ago. Let's move forward into what we're doing now.

I still got them and I like them.

[Martin]

Crocs made one mistake on their. That what they done.

Put holes in them things. And when you, when you wear them and you go do something, you ain't never. And a bee gets in with that little hole and pops you on the toe. Yeah, they made.

But the holes are necessary.

A red wasp isn't that big of a deal.

He hurt. He hurts for a minute and then, you know. But like a yellow jacket is sore for like three days.

That lasted about a week.

At least those days.

I remember one time. I mean, it was so many times in the same day that I developed an allergic reaction to, uh.

People that are allergic to things we had. I don't even remember the name of them, but we had a crew that come to our duck blinds and was going to clean them up.

[Rucker]

Billy the exterminator.

[Martin]

Yeah, the exterminators look. Well, one of them, they was allergic.

[Johnny D]

[Martin]

Look, he went in there. He come out looking like the elephant man.

[Rucker]

I Mean, his face looked just like Jimmy Durandi.

[Martin]

Oh, no, I'm serious. It was Jimmy.

It's on his face.

[Martin]

Yo. They had to rush him to the emergency room. So it was a. It was a bad deal.

[Rucker]

Yeah. My man did. My man did swell up like a beach ball.

[Martin]

Pretty quick.

Yeah. That's weird because. And what was funny, Martin feels talking about. And Phil said, I sure hope they don't hit one of them boards in there that's got a big wasp nest on it. And the next thing you heard was, ah.

And they come running out and I mean, he.

[Rucker]

I mean, that's legit.

[Martin]

He wanted Phil.

[Ryan Reynolds]

I. I wasn't there, but I can only imagine Phil and his kind and caring and compassionate. Oh, yeah, exactly like this.

[Rucker]

I can tell you. No, no, because me and him were sitting on the rig right beside each other.

[Martin]

I was giving a play by play what was happening.

[Rucker]

They all looked at me. He said, you know what's going to happen, don't you? I said, I got a pretty good idea. He said, they're going to get so entranced on them snakes. He said, they're going to walk right into a wall's nest and not even look at it. He said, and they are going to get eight.

[Martin]

And he ain't. He ain't said it.

[Rucker]

And then they wouldn't. I mean, legitimately was not. Two minutes later, you hear, ah, we're under attack. You know, they're just. They're really playing that up. And Phil just looked over and he said, told you. Yeah, he said they got him. Purple tails got them. And then here come my man. I mean, there wasn't no like as reality TV people, which is what that was kind of the infancy reality TV where it's do that again. There was no do that again. There was get him out of here.

[Martin]

Get this bad to the.

[Rucker]

He had to go get an EpiPen. He didn't have an EpiPen with him, so he had to go get an EpiPen. And.

[Johnny D]

Which is one of those things that you think as an exterminator you would just have on.

[Rucker]

I just think I would choose something different like if I were. If I were. That's why I was allergic to walls.

[Ryan Reynolds]

[Rucker]

Yeah, I would probably.

[Johnny D]

It's just not for you.

This was in a duck line. Okay. And look, we could sleep in it. It was like three sides.

Yeah, big one. It was three of them put together. Well, look we slept in it and we had sleeping bag. But we'd roll them up at the end of the year. You don't put it. So Phil was just leave them out there? Oh, yeah, yeah.

Heaven forbid we bring them in.

Yeah. So look. Hey, Phil comes in there, and he's checking everything out in the blind. And when he goes over towards the beds, okay, there's a sleeping bag roll up there. And when he's. He's walking toward it, you hear a.

It's haunted.

[Rucker]

[Martin]

It's like somebody's.

[Rucker]

Oh, the sound he's meaning to make.

[Martin]

Yeah. It's just. Hey, the bees. So he takes up a step back and it goes.

[Johnny D]

The ghost out there.

[Martin]

Yeah, it goes down. He steps back by three steps. And then it's.

[Rucker]

They just get. They get.

[Martin]

He said, whoa.

[Rucker]

He said, rut row raggy.

[Martin]

Yeah, yeah. So look, he goes back to the house, and he's got a weed stuff. He sprays weeds to kill him.

[Johnny D]

Yeah, yeah.

[Martin]

So he gets that, you know, empties that out, builds it full of gasoline. Full of gasoline. Yo. This is one of them. You pump up where it'll have just a wall of spray.

[Johnny D]

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[Martin]

So then he goes back in there and start. He just. Here they come. And he's literally. He's literally like sword fighting bees with a sprayer.

[Ryan Reynolds]

Little moment.

[Martin]

Look. Finally, we finally, after it all settles down, he unrolls that sleeping bag, and that thing was slammed full of bees. Dead ones. But you talking about dangerous. Good grief.

[Rucker]

Yeah. Heaven forbid. We just pick them up and take.

[Martin]

Yeah, yeah. Grab it, put it under yarn.

[Rucker]

All the one that you could guarantee. The percolator. Coffee pots in there. Guaranteed every year they would have a wall nest in them. You wouldn't mess with it. If the Ryans didn't get there first to build a bird nest in. Had a wall sn. And you would bump it every time you got in a duck blight. And you would be ate up before you even knew what happened. Like, I'm like, why don't we just take this stuff back? But every blind had a coffee pot.

[Martin]

Yeah. Like, left them.

[Rucker]

Yeah. Just left everything out there.

[Martin]

Like, look, was a dog run. Was okay. You know, Phil crawled in and out of there all the time for one reason or another.

[Rucker]

That's where the cottonmouths live.

[Martin]

And look, you know, he's been crawling out all morning, you know, and then we got. He got back in the blind, stood up and shot some ducks. The old one, fixable, was go out and help because we killed A bunch of them. He would go out and help the dog.

[Johnny D]

Yeah.

[Martin]

Well, hey, when he. He looked down, he's been going, this thing's got wire on it, brush sticking everywhere. Well, guess what? On top of the wire with a cotton mouth big as my arm just pulled up. He's been going in and out under him all day.

[Rucker]

Never even thought about it.

[Martin]

I didn't think about it then. Next thing here, boom, boom, boom.

[Johnny D]

Oh, yeah, most definitely.

[Martin]

I don't do the snack stomach. What are you doing? He said, I'm killing this cotton mouth that I've been crawling under all morning.

[Rucker]

Now that I can see.

[Martin]

Yeah, now that I can see it.

Whatever you're going through, it could be awful, could be bad, it could be good. We don't know what you're going through, but let me.
