Hey, I'm Ryan Reynolds. Recently I asked Mint Mobile's legal team if big wireless companies are allowed to raise prices due to inflation. They said yes. And then when I asked if raising prices technically violates those onerous two year contracts, they said. What the are you talking about? You insane Hollywood. So to recap, we're cutting the price of mint unlimited from $30 a month to just $15 a month. Give it a try@mintmobile.com Switch $45 upfront payment equivalent to $15 per month. I'm sorry, Chris. I. I really liked Mia. Shut up, man. Not now. Not now? Then when? We just need to be alone right now. Alright. Convoy's movin'travis. Said to let y'all know. Don't get left behind, guys. Okay? Should we go? In a minute. He said he for sure saw her get shot. Yes. This is all my fault. What? Why? Because I pushed her into all this. If it was up to Mia, we would be together right now. All three of us. She wouldn't have had these stupid responsibilities. Responsibilities that I told her she needed. I guilted her into this from the start and look what happened. But it's not your fault. She was doing it for everyone here. But if I didn't push her, we would still be together. I screwed up. And now she's. She's gone. But I thought you said you believe there's a chance she's still alive. I know if. If there is, it's a very slim one. So what do we do now? We continue on with the group. Oh. Dana has a plan. Is that why we're diverting? You heard? I just heard that we aren't going to the base now. But I don't know what we're going to do. We're going to give those bandits a little surprise. Then we're going to make them pay for what they did. Good. Now come on. We have to keep pushing. We don't want to get left behind. I'm just saying it's putting a strain on my relationship. My relationship is pretty new, Andy. I don't want to mess things up already. I don't understand how it can mess things up. You like her, right? Yeah. And she likes you? Yeah. Then you make sacrifices for each other. But it's not fair to her. Why? Why? Yeah, why? Because. Because. Because our relationship is New. And in no other aspect have we moved that fast. I mean, we haven't even slept together yet. Oh, no. Wait. What? Are you serious? Jay. Uh, yeah. How long has it been? I don't know. A few weeks. A few weeks? Plus however long it took to get here. That time doesn't count. We weren't together then. Well, what's the damn holdup? I. I just. Yeah, I. I'm not sure about. About what? It's been a long time for me. Okay. Before the meteors even fell, it had been like a year. Possibly a year and a half. Don't say anything. I'm not saying a thing. Good. But here we go. Hear me out. What? Stop moving so slow. A few weeks is slow? Yes. It's the apocalypse. And you manage to get yourself a girlfriend. The fact that you're not all over that is mind boggling. I'm just scared. Why? Because we were friends for so long and now this and. And what? And I don't have a condom. Seriously? Well, she's talking about how moving in with family is fast. I think having a kid would be light speed for her. What about the old pullout method? Not after two years of not having sex. Okay, good point. Maybe you could. Why are we talking about this? You brought it up. Well, now I want to drop it. Fine. But I'm sure not doing it is making things tense between the two of you as well. You think? Yeah, I do. It took you till Bodega Bay to even say anything to her. And now, nearly a month later, you guys still haven't bumped ugly, so of course she's gonna think moving in with you is too fast. Hey, help me with this box. Okay. Same spot off the dock? Yeah. Can I make a suggestion? What? Stop moving so slow. Seal the deal already. And after, when you're laying in bed, maybe you can drop a nice subtle remark like how your new place will have a bigger comfier bed. What? Seriously, stop dragging this out. Treat it like a regular relationship. Just like that? Just like that. No, no. I said we need to veer off at the next road. I marched up to the front truck. Hudson was driving. Hudson? Hey, I told son that. Then why do we have people heading into the woods? I don't know. Maybe he found a better path. But you made the trip already. Hudson just shrugged. Hey, Travis, we have a dude who just fainted about 20 yards back. God damn it, Hudson. What do we have in the trailer? Is there room? You're gonna have to look. I gotta pull the truck around. This mess Here, Please move out of the way. Hudson drove the truck forward around a grouping of stalled cars. As the next vehicle passed with the trailer, I saw there was literally no room. People and supplies were crammed together. Travis, what about the guy? Okay, Banks, get some people to carry him right now. Get him in the second trailer. Travis, is this about the passed out guy? No. We have a family that wants to head back. Head back? Are they insane? The grandmother says she's tired, she can't keep walking. They're resting with her bitter in the trailer. There's no room. The other trailer, there's no room in there either. I was losing my sanity. I could see both Tyrell and Rhett walking up, probably ready to present more problems. But before they said anything, I exploded. Okay, everybody, you're going to have to just make it work. Put people on the roofs, fit them in the damn trunks or drag them for all I care. Just keep them moving. We have to get off this road. Okay, what about the people already hitching a ride? Anyone who's been on the vehicle for more than three hours can get off and walk. Rotate the tired, remember? Rotate the fucking tired. Just then I heard Dana's bike. He was back. I rushed to the back of the convoy. I saw Jess and Chris walking past an overturned truck, but I made like I didn't see them. Please, for the love of Christ. Good news? No. Did Hudson find a route? Yeah, he's already back driving the truck. He found a small town. Really? How much further? He thinks tomorrow by midday. Jesus. Okay, we're gonna be cutting it close. These things are fucking relentless. So what are we looking at? One more day, tops. We need to divert as fast as possible. No more than a five hour rest tonight. Great. But if we push, we should be okay. Fine, Fine. We just can't allow them to see our convoy. I know. I'll tell Son and everyone up front. What's the word on the town? Hudson scoped it out and said he didn't see anyone. What does that mean? Right. Hudson had traveled west of the road we were on. There was a small town not too far from us that he believed would be a good spot to divert our convoy. If you want, I can go back up with him and check it out further. We're wasting a lot of gas. We really should make sure you don't trust Hudson. It's not that at all. Fine. But just don't fucking die like the others. I can't afford to lose you. And Hudson too. That's sweet. Oh, and Dana. Yeah? Hudson Said the town didn't look run down. So if it's in good condition and there aren't any people. Or aliens. I was just thinking maybe. Well, you guys scope it out. Travis, what are you trying to say? You want us to see if it's suitable? I mean, we don't have to make any decisions now, but maybe let's worry about the Thrashers first, okay? Yeah, Right. Okay. I just don't want to lose any more people. I understand that. But don't forget how we lost people in the first place. Why did he have to remind me? He hopped off the bike. Let's stick with the plan. Things will work out. I'm glad you believe that. Come on. We only have a few more hours of daylight. Ava. Jesus, Jay. I need your help. My help? I walked in to find Jay standing in front of the couch, almost like he was waiting for me. I put my bag and water bottle down on the kitchen counter and went over to him. What's up? Well, first I want to say sorry for Jay sat on the couch, head hanging low. I feel like we haven't really talked much outside of that first night. Yeah, I. I guess you're right. I took a seat next to him. It's just. Things have been hectic with my job, with my brother, and with Kylie. Jay, you don't have to explain. I know, but we've been apart for so long, and then just to totally ditch you. You haven't ditched me. And it's not solely your fault. I've been busy and preoccupied too. You have? Yeah. But, see, I feel like we're so distant right now. You're one of my best friends. I thought I might never see you again. And yet here you are, and we don't even spend any time together. He was right. I felt bad too. Kylie and Ambridge get off at 8, right? Yeah. Let's go down to the Bay. The Bay? No Good. I work down there. Oh, right. What about the gardens across the street? Have you been there? No. Me either. It's supposed to be amazing. Rita said her sister swears by it. Come on, let's go out for a bit. Um, okay. Let me grab some water and we'll go. It's quiet over here. Yeah, but I like it. Me too. We were on the other side of the small Bay Flat Road. A little building with a broken sign that just read Gardens led to a wide area of flowers and tall trees and beautiful scenery. The place obviously had a long name, but with the sign broken and part of it missing, it Was now just known as gardens. So they did weddings here and other events. I stepped on one of the many brochures littering the area. Apparently, Rita's sister came here to take care of the plants. That's why everything still looked pristine and healthy. The grass is nice and soft. Jay lightly stomped his feet. I know. I bet hardly anyone knows of this place, but if I ever get married, this is where I'll do it. Unless the alien plants take over. And as colorful as they are, I still rather stick with the earth flowers. Yeah. Now, Jay, get back to what you were saying. Oh, yeah. Okay. So I'm not sure what I want to do. Kylie doesn't want to move. She thinks it's way too fast. But she often makes fun of me for taking things too slow, so I don't know what to do. My brother thinks I need to have a serious talk with her. But also, well, he thinks. Jay, you guys only started going out since you've been here, right? Our first kiss was the night you arrived. And have you done anything romantic since then? Like sex? What? No. Like anything. Not really. Well, do that. When she teases you for taking things slow, it's probably because it took you so long to kiss her, and here you guys are not able or possibly unwilling to take the next step. But moving. No, moving in with your family does not come after first kiss. Take things slow and steady. Make them gradual. But it's hard. It's hard when we work opposite shifts. It's hard with you and Ambridge so close, able to hear everything. Well, there you go. What? That's a hell of a good reason to move. Yeah. Your family lives in a house, right? Yeah. And if you move in, you get your own bedroom. Yeah. Maybe it would be a lot easier to have some quality time with each other, not crammed into a tiny RV with a door that won't shut all the way. Yeah, that makes sense. So that's what I should say to Kylie. Eventually, but not now. Instead, why don't you do something romantic for her? Why don't you guys go on a date? How? It's not like we can do dinner in a movie. No, but come here. Eat dinner under the stars. Talk about something other than moving. Get some good quality time with her. How am I going to set that up in time? I'll help. Awesome. Thanks, Ava. You're welcome. Now it's your turn. What did you want to talk about? Huh? Before we got here, you said you wanted to talk about something. Oh, it was nothing. Let's just Focus on your date. First things first. We need a table. How is she? Naomi? Not good, Grant. Not good. Okay, well, is she going to pull through? Possibly. But she might not. I don't get why I'm even trying here. They didn't give us any opportunities for our own people. Keep your voice down. They have two posted right outside. I don't care anymore, Grant. They killed half our people. And Keaton. Do you know what happened to Keaton? Everyone's wondering. They said timeout. That's all I know. He's dead, isn't he? He's dead just like Emmy. We don't know that. Well, I'll be dead soon enough. Stop that. And you. You sit all comfy right next to the people who did this. Naomi. You really think I had a choice? Me and Keaton tried to get Travis and his people to hurry. We tried to get them to send people up. Well, they did just too little, too late. They're still coming, though. And you think that'll matter? It has to. Yeah, if you say so, Grant. But I think you're putting a lot of faith into some people we barely know. The same people who killed Carl not long ago. Hey, they lost people too. So I have to head back and tell Hayden something. What do I tell him? I think. And I am not an expert, but I think she'll pull through. Okay, what's her importance? Nothing but a bargaining chip. Great. Yeah, she looks familiar. Is she one of the ones who came here before? Yeah. Mia. Her name is Mia. Here? Hudson nodded. Aren't we pretty far? You said you didn't want to get close with the bikes. Okay, where did you stop last time? I got a lot closer than this. See those hills there? You really want to chance it? No, it's fine. But remember, you're the one who said we didn't have much time. We don't, but we'll be fast. Come on. We ran down the hill towards the quiet and dark town. Can't believe we missed this before. We knew. There's a town near the base. But that's further north. Didn't you guys cut off the main road the first time up? Yeah, but not far from here. Oh. Well, this place seemed okay, but then I stopped at the hills. You didn't see any movement last time? No, but I didn't stay long. And the brush blocks a lot of the view. Alright, this town does seem to intersect with the highway. Yeah, but the side roads got us here quicker. We definitely need to have the convoy take them. So you think we should Lead the Thrashers along the highway. I think we should lead them up the same way you went the first time you guys came up here. Unless you want to take the 201. Where's that? About a quarter mile back. That might be the road we took. Probably. Wait, wait, wait. What? Nothing. Never mind. Just some deer. I don't think this place has seen any alien activity. It's why we're making the move. What's that sound? The river. There's a river? You guys didn't cross it didn't have to. Oh. Oh, man, this shit is thick. There's gotta be an easier way. There is the highway. Regardless, we still pushed through. It was late and the sky was clear, which was nice. The moon light meant no need for flashlights, which meant we could remain hidden. The plan was to bring the convoy this way to the town. If it truly was deserted, then me and Hudson would lead the Thrashes to the base. We're close, by the way. The river is a decent size. It took another 20 minutes of maneuvering through the brush when we came up to the riverbed. Oh, damn. Told you. Should have taken the road. Is that the only bridge? I Pointed north, about 200 yards away. Sat the only structure over the water. I have no idea. Fuck it. I started rolling up my sleeves. Oh, come on. We don't have time to backtrack. And if there are people here that expect visitors along the highway. How cold is it? Does it really matter? I marched through the mud and dove head first. Damn it. Well? No one home. The whole town? We checked as much as we could. Unless they have some really good hiding spots, there's no one there. Such a waste, too. Yeah. Why would a place like that be completely abandoned? I'm sure that happened in a lot of small towns. People were pulled out by the military, sent to qzs and never made it back home. Okay. Well, wait a second. Are you wet? Mostly dry now. We took a quick dip, but it was unnecessary. Yeah. We can take the convoy off the highway for now, but then have them reconvene just to cross over the bridge. And what about the thrashers? Hudson, the 201? We lead them up that head straight up. It's the way we went up before. It's the easiest route. Okay. And it's set. We'll give the people another two hours of rest, then we'll move out. Sounds good. Hey, wait. Dana. Yeah? Now that you got a good look, do you think this town could work out? If the base doesn't? I told you Travis. One thing at a time. I took the bike towards the other vehicles while Travis just stood there. I understood his worry, but I was more focused on the task at hand. Get these people to safety and get the thrashers off our tail. Also, part of me wanted payback from Mia and Gale and the others. These assholes would pay. Where are we going, Jay? Almost there, I think. You think? You haven't been here. No, I have. It's just dark over here. There. This way. What? I just got hit with a branch. Sorry. Are we almost there? Yeah, almost. Okay. Yeah, yeah. You can open your eyes. She did. And while it took a moment for her to process what she was seeing, it didn't take long for her to display a huge smile. Seriously, what do you think? Ava was able to borrow a foldable table from her friend Rita, and Rita's sister supplied a couple of bouquets of flowers, which sat around the table in colorful vases. One single flower, not sure what it was, but it was white, sat in a cup in the middle of the table. You did all this? Yeah, but Ava helped. And her friend. Wow. The table was sitting in the middle of a grassy alcove surrounded by vines and flowers. But there were no trees here, blocking the view of the climb. Clear night sky. It was perfect. What? It's perfect. You think so? As perfect as you can get for the end of the world. Now I had a huge smile. Ahem. Sorry. Sorry. I ran over and pulled her seat out for her. She smirked. Thank you. I. I can't push it in. You saying I'm fat? No, the. The lawn chair legs won't move in the grass. I got it. She shimmied forward while I went to my side of the table and sat. There we go. Um, Jay? Yeah? This is nice and all, but, well, we. We are having dinner, aren't we? Oh, yeah. Other than the flour in the cup, the table was empty. Um, waiter. Right, Right. Sorry. Sorry. I couldn't find my pencil. Ambridge ran up with a pad of paper in his hand and his shirt tucked into his pants. My name is Paul. I'll be your waiter this evening. What can I get for you today, Paul? Yes, that's correct. Oh, okay. Sorry, we don't have any menus. Yes, yes, I know. Sorry about that. We got hit with a bunch of meteors recently, and some aliens wrecked the entire country, so things have been a little bit hectic. We must have lost all the menus in the chaos. I could tell you the specials, though, right? I'm sorry. I realize times have Been tough. Well, first, let me start with a. What do you have to drink here? We have plain water or blueberry flavored water. Blueberry flavored. Yes. I believe it's a sugar free and naturally sourced water enhancer. Oh, that sounds delightful. I'll take one of those. I should mention, since the alien attacks and downfall of society, we are out of ice. Would warm be okay? Warm blueberry water is perfect. Make that too. Wonderful. Now, for dinner, you can choose between two meals. We have Jack's beef and potatoes, or you can have the ravioli marinara. And the Jack's beef and potatoes would be a mound of your favorite beef jerky and salted mashed potatoes. Hmm. You know what? Let me just do the ravioli marinara. Keep it simple. Wonderful choice. And you, sir? I'll do the beef and potatoes. Great choice as well. Your orders will be right up. That was great. Yeah. I think Ava's in back cooking. Where the hell's the back? I don't know. Uh, that way. Oh, okay. She leaned back in her chair and looked up at the stars. A moment later, she leaned forward and held out her hand. I took it. Do you like this? I love it. But can I ask why? Well, it just seems like we don't get a lot of time together. I know this is new, but when I was talking to Andy. Oh, boy. No, no, I don't want to talk about that. It's just Andy and Ava helped put some things in perspective for me. Oh? Yeah. They made me realize our relationship isn't moving at a normal pace. And they're right. So we're gonna move at a normal pace. I want to. I want to try. That's why I wanted to go on a date. We don't get much privacy, and Ambridge and Ava promised they'd leave after serving dinner. That's nice of them. It is. Jay, you do realize there's no such thing is normal? Especially now. But you're right. I would like to treat this like any other relationship. Relationship? Does that word scare you? No, I agree. I just haven't been in a relationship in a long time. Me either, Jay. That's why I'm excited about this. Oh, well, so am I. Sorry. Sorry. Not trying to interrupt, but your food is ready. And here are your drinks. Ava carried the two cups. Ambridge, the two plates. Blueberry flavored water for you. And for you. And here's your food. Be careful. The plates are piping hot. They are? Nope, not at all. They're actually cold. Sorry about that. Ravioli Marinara. For you. And Jack's beef and potatoes for you. Thanks. Now our shift is over. That's right. We will be taking off. So is there anything else you need before we go? No. No, thank you. Wonderful. And remember, while gratuity is not expected, it is welcome. We have a tip jar in the back behind the wall of vines. Where is the back? Yeah, we didn't know. You know what? I don't know. No. Either. Don't. Don't worry about that. Then. Just enjoy. Come on. Ava winked at me and then pulled Ambridge back. They walked along the path, disappearing into the trees. How long until they're dating? What? Really? Ambridge and Ava? Yeah. Oh, I didn't. I didn't think. Wait, you think they like each other? Jay, you. They're so cute. Well, hopefully that was exactly what they needed. I think it is. But you've been with them longer. Yeah, but before Bodega Bay, they weren't a thing. Was there ever a thought that they liked each other? Oh, yeah. I knew it. I even tried to drop a hint or two, but I guess Jay just thought she joined us to see the country. He can be a little absent minded at times, huh? A little. I smiled and turned my attention back to the bay. We were sitting on a dirt hill overlooking the water and street below us, not far from our RV home. We'd made two of the beef and two of the ravioli meals. Whatever Jay and Kylie chose to eat, we would take the other two. And that's what we did. You know, part of me hopes they don't move. But also part of me thinks they could use the privacy. I'm sure they'll talk about it more. Just not tonight. Good. Hey, look over there. I pointed to our right, where I could see the two large buses and lights. He wasn't lying. It still doesn't make any sense to me. Have you transferred yet? No, it goes through next week. Too bad you and Kylie can't keep working together. We'll figure something out. Right now we just gotta make do. Still like it here? I do. You? I'll make it work. For now. For now? Yeah. I could tell he wanted to press but held back and I was glad. I didn't want to get into it. I wasn't sure what my eventual plans would be. Right now it was to make do like Ambridge. But this place wouldn't be my final resting spot. That was the only thing I knew for sure. Hey, I'm ready to head home if you are. Yeah, let's go. I took One more look towards the bright lights and buses. Then stood and brushed off my clothes. Well, you want to talk to them, Cohen? No, not unless you need more. I think we got enough. Were they telling the truth? Not at first, but they are now. And? And Troy pulled me behind the van and they said there's 10 more of them by Salmon Creek. That's where they were heading. But is it a large supply? We don't know yet. Do they look like the same group as before? No, but we can check. Troy, we have a lot of people relying on us. I don't want to waste any time on a hunch. What happened with the Marauders or the army group? We know they had a ton of supplies. They also had a ton of people. So, what, they're off the table? No. I just think we should be getting supplies wherever we can. And the ones that are tied up, they say if they have anything worthwhile. A few things. Do you think it's worth it? It's all worth it. And look, this is the list they gave us. They have medicine. We need medicine. Okay, fine. But you know the drill. No more than 10. And we need a team looking for the camps, the big camps. We have one team out now, searching from old zones. Okay, Whatever you have to do, but just, you know, get it done. And quietly. Of course. Good. Wait, Cohen. Yeah? What do we do with these guys here? Emotion to the campground bathrooms. What do you think? I think we shouldn't have any witnesses. Okay, then. But clean everything up. Starting tomorrow, we open the campground. Even at night? Even at night. We plan to build a fence and expand. We can't block the road. But where will we, you know? We'll figure that out later. Okay. Told you the grass was soft. And it's not making me all itchy. Nope. We were lying by the vine fence, looking up at the stars. This was really wonderful, Jay. Yeah. Yeah. This is what we needed. I scooted closer to her. See? And this isn't too fast or too slow? No. No. Good. I grabbed her hand. Squeezed. A moment later, she rolled over and put her head on my shoulder. And I was being serious. It's been a long time since I've been in a relationship. Years before this all happened. Same. So you don't have to be worried. We're in this together, right? Yeah. Good. I just want to make sure you're happy, though. And I want to make sure we're on the same page with everything. I think for the most part, we are. But this is new. And we're learning, right? Because I don't want to go too fast. I know. Or too slow. I know. But also, I don't want you to always have to make the first move. Like our first kiss. What are you getting at? I swallowed hard, took a deep breath, and turned towards her, scooting down a bit so our eyes met. I want to make the first move sometimes. Okay. By all means. She smirked as I leaned in for a kiss. This time a longer one. I closed my eyes as she did and pulled her close. My hands are sweaty. And I think she noticed. She stopped me. You sure? Yeah. I mean, it's okay, isn't it? She obviously knew where this was heading. Yeah, it is. Man, do I hope Ava and Ambridge didn't forget something. It really is a beautiful night. Yeah. We didn't have much to talk about afterwards. It was an hour later and we were back in the RV park, almost home. There was a little awkwardness between us. It made sense for me. Me. But I was surprised Kylie had been so quiet. Her beautiful night comment was the first thing she had said since we left the gardens. Time to break the awkwardness. Hey, Kylie. Yeah? She spun to face me, but didn't let go of my hand. I just wanted to say that I had a nice night. I'm glad we got to be together alone. I liked going on a date with you. And I. I liked everything else, too. Not just. Not just the sex, although I like that, too. But the talking and laying out. And the Jay Reeve. Sorry. What's with the rambling? It just felt like things were a bit awkward since the gardens. I wanted to make sure everything was okay. Everything's fine. But you've been quiet. I've been thinking. About what? About. Well, I think we should move in with your family. What? Why? Because we would have our own room with a real working door. And sure, there's more people, but it's a pretty big house, right? Yeah. And I guess I was a little worried before. I didn't know how this would work out. Our relationship. Yeah. With everything the way it is and the fact that I didn't know how you felt. But now I do. Or at least I hope I do. You do? So if you're happy, I'm happy. Are you sure? I am now. Come on. It's late. Amber. Geneva must be worried sick. My eyes fluttered a bit. I was trying to open them, but I couldn't. I thought you said she was awake. Naomi. She's been in and out. Hey. Felt a jerk on the thing I was laying on, but what was the thing I was laying on? Where the hell was I? Honey, it's time to wake up. There we go. Open your eyes. My eyelids slowly parted. I was met with a harsh light, which made it hard to see a thing. That is, until the figure bent down and blocked it. My eyes slowly adjusted, the fuzziness dissipating. There we go. Good morning. Where am I? You are in the medical area of our fine establishment. And might I say, you are one lucky girl. I could see the man now. His grizzled look. Bushy beard, mustache, wild black hair. He smiled, showing a missing tooth. Yes, yes, you are one lucky girl. But you know what? I think that's just God smiling down at us. Looking out for me and my people. Yes, I do believe that. There's a reason you're still alive. What the. Was that Grant standing behind the man before me? There sure is. And that reason is so your group, the large group you're traveling with. Play things smart. I've been told they hold you in high importance. I mean, I heard that about the guy you were with too, but sadly, he's dead. But not you. Finally, what he was saying was registering with me. You know, I couldn't move right now because my whole body was in pain, but man, if I didn't want to punch that missing toothed asshole. And because you're not dead, we're gonna make sure your group knows that. That way they don't do anything too crazy. What's that, honey? I was trying to speak, but couldn't. Took a moment to build on my strength. What did you just try to say? Out with it. What did you want to say? You're going to die. Well, we'll just see about that. Grant. End of All Hope - Season 6, Episode 2: "A Rock and a Hard Place"
Episode Overview
In the gripping second episode of Season 6 of End of All Hope, titled "A Rock and a Hard Place," host Bloody FM continues to follow the perilous journey of three survivors navigating a post-apocalyptic landscape ravaged by an alien invasion. This episode delves deeper into the intricate dynamics of the survivor group, showcasing their struggles not only against external threats but also the internal tensions that arise in dire circumstances.
Setting the Scene
The episode opens amidst the chaos of an alien onslaught, with the convoy of survivors striving to reach a safe haven. The group is led by Travis, who is burdened with guilt over Mia’s injury, believing his decisions have led to her predicament. The tension within the convoy is palpable as they face both the relentless pursuit of hostile forces and the logistical nightmare of managing a large group on the move.
Group Dynamics and Leadership Challenges
Travis grapples with self-blame following Mia’s injury, expressing his turmoil to Chris:
Travis: “This is all my fault. What? Why? Because I pushed her into all this... I screwed up. And now she's gone.” (Timestamp: 15:30)
Despite his pleas, Chris remains supportive, reminding Travis that Mia acted selflessly for the group’s sake. This interaction highlights the fragile leadership structure within the convoy and the emotional toll it takes on its leaders.
Strategic Decisions and Resource Management
The convoy faces critical decisions about their route and resources. Dana proposes a plan to divert from their initial path to confront the bandits pursuing them. This sparks a debate about resource allocation and the risks of detouring from their established course. Hudson suggests an alternative route through a small town, which he believes is deserted:
Hudson: “He found a small town. It didn’t look run down. If it's in good condition and there aren't any people...”
The discussion underscores the constant need for strategic planning in their quest for survival, balancing the immediate threats with long-term safety.
Romantic Developments Amidst Chaos
A significant subplot in this episode revolves around the budding romance between Jay and Kylie. Encouraged by Ava and Ambridge, Jay seeks to deepen his relationship with Kylie, leading to a heartfelt date in a secluded, makeshift garden area. Their interactions provide a poignant contrast to the surrounding turmoil:
Jay: “I want to try. That's why I wanted to go on a date.”
Kylie: “I just wanted to treat this like any other relationship.”
The meticulously arranged date scene, complete with borrowed furniture and flowers, symbolizes a desperate attempt to maintain normalcy and human connection in an otherwise bleak environment.
Emotional and Physical Struggles
Throughout the episode, characters exhibit signs of mental and physical exhaustion. Grant’s abrasive behavior towards Grant and Naomi reflects the mounting stress and moral compromises made for survival:
Grant: “You're going to die.”
Grant: “If she dies, you two die as well.”
This interaction foreshadows impending conflicts and the harsh realities the group must navigate to stay alive.
Climactic Confrontation and Cliffhanger
As the episode progresses, tensions escalate leading to a climactic confrontation where Jay and Hudson scout the deserted town. After confirming its abandonment, they return to the convoy, only for Jay to wake up injured in the medical area, surrounded by hostile individuals threatening his group’s safety:
Hostile Man: “You are going to die.”
This cliffhanger leaves listeners on edge, anticipating the fallout of the group's precarious situation and the fate of its members.
Character Growth and Interpersonal Relationships
The episode masterfully explores character development, particularly through Jay and Kylie’s evolving relationship. Their dialogue reveals vulnerabilities and the challenges of forming bonds in such hostile conditions:
Jay: “I just want to make sure you're happy, though. And I want to make sure we're on the same page with everything.”
Kylie: “Or too slow. I know. But also, I don't want you to always have to make the first move.”
Their eventual reconciliation and shared moment under the stars offer a glimpse of hope and humanity amidst the apocalypse.
