Land Productions presents End of All Hope Season 6 Episode 5 Another Week in Paradise.
Jay Rutlet
Here.
Ambridge
No, a little more to the closet door. That is one sturdy dresser. Yeah, but see, it looks better on this side.
Kylie
Knock, knock.
Jay Rutlet
I like how you knock and say knock.
Ambridge
Hi, Andy.
Kylie
Hi. I was just checking in. We're putting the kids to bed and getting ready ourselves. Anything you guys need.
Jay Rutlet
You know we're not staying tonight.
Kylie
You aren't?
Jay Rutlet
No, I told you we have some more things to get. We'll finish everything tomorrow.
Kylie
You can't have that much.
Jay Rutlet
We don't.
Ambridge
But we're doing a goodbye dinner with Amber Geneva too.
Kylie
When?
Jay Rutlet
Tomorrow. Andy rolled his eyes and snorted.
Kylie
You guys know this isn't a real goodbye. They don't live far.
Jay Rutlet
We know.
Kylie
All right.
Jay Rutlet
Hey, where's dad?
Kylie
Living room, reading. Okay, just make sure you lock the door if you go. Since odds are dad will fall asleep in his chair.
Jay Rutlet
We will.
Kylie
Have a good night, guys.
Ambridge
Night.
Jay Rutlet
After Andy left, Kylie came over and leaned on me.
Ambridge
You know, we could spend the night.
Jay Rutlet
Why?
Ambridge
Seems like he wants us to.
Jay Rutlet
But we already told Ambridge and Ava that we were just moving furniture around tonight and we still have some stuff to get.
Ambridge
We could get our stuff anytime.
Jay Rutlet
Nuh. They're going to get roommates soon.
Ambridge
I think we'll be okay for one night.
Jay Rutlet
You sure?
Ambridge
Yeah. Let's test it out.
Jay Rutlet
She sat on the bed and pulled me close.
Ambridge
Uh oh.
Jay Rutlet
Kylie bounced on the bed. Testing was loud.
Ambridge
Well, that's not good.
Jay Rutlet
Think we can find another mattress?
Ambridge
That or we're only ever having sex on the floor.
Hope Ennis
You want one?
Mia
No, no, I'm good. Thank you.
Hope Ennis
They're still not back yet.
Mia
It's only nine.
Hope Ennis
Just saying.
Mia
I mean, they could stroll in around one, so I'm not worried.
Hope Ennis
But that won't happen. Jay doesn't stay up that late. And since Kylie now works at her new place, she doesn't stay up that late either.
Mia
Okay, fine. They could still stroll in around 10 though.
Hope Ennis
Sure they could. But will they? Kylie and Jay went over to his father's place for dinner. And to get their new room ready, Ambridge and I made a bet on whether they would stay the night there or not. Their plan was to sleep here one more night, but I had a feeling that they would be too excited to come back. And so far I was right.
Mia
But if I know Jay like I think I know him, he's very set in his ways. He says he's going to sleep here tonight. He'll sleep here tonight. But I also realize that You've known Jay for longer, so.
Hope Ennis
Exactly. All it'll take is for Kylie or his brother to convince him and that's it.
Mia
I wish I had that kind of pull when we were traveling across the country.
Hope Ennis
He was a real pain sometimes, huh?
Mia
Oh, yeah.
Hope Ennis
Not surprising. That being said, so was I.
Mia
With Mark.
Hope Ennis
Yeah. I could feel the regret coming up. So I quickly grabbed my soda, took a couple sips and thought about how to change the subject.
Mia
You both had your eyes set on the prize. And if I could handle Jay, I'm sure Mark could handle you.
Hope Ennis
And Mark knew me well, so it wasn't like it was a surprise. Which was true. But it still hurt thinking about him and the way I treated him. On our trek, Ambridge walked past me and over to the room in the back. He pulled back the squeaky door.
Mia
I gotta admit that it helped having Kylie with us. It was nice to have someone on my side every once in a while.
Hope Ennis
But probably not anymore, right? He looked back at me and smiled.
Mia
Yeah, guess not.
Hope Ennis
You're not thinking of sleeping back here if they don't come back tonight, are you?
Mia
No. Because they are coming back.
Hope Ennis
You keep telling yourself that.
Mia
Whatever. At least there's not a lot of dishes.
Hope Ennis
That was the bet. Loser washes the dishes. That's all. It's not like we had a lot, but it was just a friendly bet. I wash dishes all day. I'm winning this bet.
Mia
We should have bet who gets the bed.
Hope Ennis
Oh, man, that would have been serious. Ambridge brushed past me and sat at the table.
Mia
You chicken?
Hope Ennis
No, no, no. We are not changing the steaks now.
Mia
I'm kidding. You can have the bed.
Hope Ennis
We could switch off.
Mia
What?
Hope Ennis
Every night I took a seat across from him. Or every week.
Mia
No, you can have it.
Hope Ennis
You're such a gentleman. Or do you just act like sleeping on a folded down dining table is really that bad?
Mia
I'm kind of used to it now.
Hope Ennis
Well, you could always take the couch.
Mia
That means the stranger that they set us up with will be just outside your room.
Hope Ennis
Your comfort means more to me. Ambridge and I didn't know each other too well, but we had been getting along. With Jay moving out, I was a little worried. But not anymore. Sure, eventually we would be set up with a new roommate. But with Ambridge here, it wouldn't be so bad.
Mia
Maybe we can talk to room and.
Hope Ennis
Board about not taking in someone else.
Mia
We could try. Maybe they'll just charge us a little more.
Hope Ennis
Can we afford it?
Mia
Probably not.
Hope Ennis
For a moment there, I thought I saw Amber staring at me as I sipped my soda. But the moment I brought the can down, his eyes diverted to the sink.
Mia
How do we have so many dishes?
Hope Ennis
It's not that many.
Mia
You only say that because of your job.
Hope Ennis
Well, a lot of those are Kylie and Jay's.
Mia
Ah.
Hope Ennis
So you work tomorrow at 11. Good. That'll give you plenty of time to wash them in the morning.
Mia
Is there a rush?
Hope Ennis
You gotta get them done before our goodbye dinner.
Mia
Oh, okay. If I lose, I'll wash them. But I won't be home till 7, so you'll have to set the table.
Hope Ennis
Deal. Look at what a good sport I am.
Kylie
So how was it?
Jay Rutlet
How was what?
Kylie
The first night.
Jay Rutlet
Fine.
Kylie
What's wrong with you?
Jay Rutlet
My back hurts. The bed isn't the greatest.
Kylie
Yeah, and it squeaks.
Jay Rutlet
I know. The mattress has springs. It's super old.
Kylie
Well, look for something better.
Jay Rutlet
I sat on a crate and leaned over the edge of the dock.
Kylie
What are you doing?
Jay Rutlet
Resting a minute.
Kylie
Because of the mattress?
Jay Rutlet
No, because of this job too. I'm tired of it already.
Kylie
Oh, come on. It's not that bad.
Jay Rutlet
I'm not used to this labor. This kind of labor.
Kylie
So what are you gonna do instead?
Jay Rutlet
I don't know. I face towards the bay, watching some several boats sail out.
Kylie
I wouldn't mind being on a boat searching for supplies. You know, they get off and explore. It's a dangerous job.
Jay Rutlet
Some of them stay on the boat. And I like sailing. I'm surprised. You're not interested.
Kylie
No, And I love sailing. But I'm fine right here on land, in a safe area.
Jay Rutlet
But this is what you want to keep doing?
Kylie
Sure, why not?
Jay Rutlet
Because it's boring and tiring.
Kylie
It's work. It won't be much different out there.
Jay Rutlet
Well, I don't have to sail, but there's got to be something better suited for me.
Kylie
Hey, help me with this.
Jay Rutlet
He motioned to a large cardboard box filled with random junk. I grabbed aside and we walked it to the lot. Is there anything else, job wise? Sure. Like what?
Mia
I don't know. You have to ask?
Jay Rutlet
Oh.
Kylie
If you want to get on a boat, talk to Spencer. But I don't know if dad will like it.
Jay Rutlet
He won't care.
Kylie
Sure he will. I told you, it's dangerous.
Jay Rutlet
Not if I stay on the boat.
Mia
Right here.
Jay Rutlet
Anything is better than this. I just need something different. And I love the water.
Kylie
Hey, what happened to that boat you came here on?
Jay Rutlet
You kind of just let them have it.
Kylie
You let them have it?
Jay Rutlet
Or they confiscated it? I don't know. We didn't need it anymore.
Kylie
Well, if you're looking for an inn, that might be your chance.
Jay Rutlet
What do you mean?
Kylie
You gave this small ass fleet another boat. The least they can do is let you work on it.
Jay Rutlet
I checked the bay, shading my eyes from the harsh sun. I don't even see it.
Kylie
Talk to Spencer. If they need more hands, I'm sure he'll let you move over.
Jay Rutlet
Would you care?
Kylie
I wouldn't, no.
Jay Rutlet
Is he here?
Kylie
Over there.
Jay Rutlet
Andy pointed across the lot and walked back onto the dock, zigzagging the between other unloading groups. Spencer, the ponytailed dude who we first met when we got here, was walking along another dock past more groups.
Mia
Dock her there. No, no, just leave her for now. We're moving her again this weekend.
Jay Rutlet
Hey. It was our boat. I weaved past a few fishermen until I was right behind Spencer. I stared at his black ponytail as he yelled to the people on the boat.
Mia
Yeah, clean her off as best as you can. We're gonna need to repaint.
Jay Rutlet
Repaint? Yeah.
Mia
And what about the sail? We'll have to replace it.
Jay Rutlet
Fix her up real nice, Spencer. He spun around, pushed up his sunglasses. Yeah, I was wondering if you had any openings or any need for any help on the board boats.
Mia
You talked to the office?
Jay Rutlet
No. I mean, not yet.
Mia
They didn't send you down here?
Jay Rutlet
No. I work on the docks. I'm part of an unloading team over there.
Mia
Well, if you're already employed.
Jay Rutlet
Yeah, well, I just. Unloading's not really for me.
Mia
But you want to be on a boat?
Jay Rutlet
I liked being on the water.
Mia
It's not a vacation.
Jay Rutlet
I know that.
Mia
You know how to sail?
Jay Rutlet
Kinda. I. I came in on that boat there. I pointed to feeling naughty.
Hope Ennis
Who are you again?
Jay Rutlet
The name's Jay. Jay Rutlet. I got here a little over a month ago.
Mia
No. Look, you gotta talk to management. They make the decisions.
Jay Rutlet
But I heard you were in charge at that. He smirked.
Mia
Well, it has to go through them first. If they allow it, sure. But I gotta tell you, we're kind of full up right now.
Travis
Really.
Mia
Sorry.
Jay Rutlet
Is there anything else I can do other than unloading? He shrugged.
Mia
We're covered right now. But ask the office. Maybe they got something. Hey, hey. Not there. I gotta go. Not there. Move her over there. Yeah.
Jay Rutlet
That was disappointing. I was just about to leave when something in the water caught my eye. A dead white fish. I went to the edge to see more. Lots of them just floating there. Was this from a shipment? Someone accidentally dropped them. But I made my Way along the dock until I reached the corner corner on the small beach. There were several more.
Kylie
Jay, come on. We got more to move.
Jay Rutlet
I'm coming.
Hope Ennis
So you guys are completely done?
Ambridge
We didn't have much.
Hope Ennis
No, I know. But you guys are talking about moving furniture and getting the room the way you like it.
Mia
By the way, I told you, if you need help with anything.
Ambridge
No, we're done. Super easy to organize. Just a bureau, bed, nightstand and lamp.
Jay Rutlet
Simple.
Ambridge
And we got everything from here. Not that there was much, but if.
Hope Ennis
You guys find anything, we'll let you know.
Jay Rutlet
Hey, we're not, like, abandoning you guys, right? Ava and Ambridge shared a look.
Mia
No, no, not at all.
Jay Rutlet
Okay, good.
Ambridge
Jay was super worried.
Jay Rutlet
I felt bad. We get to live with relatives and you guys will get strangers.
Mia
Actually, no one's approached us yet.
Ambridge
Yeah, that's what I've been wondering lately. They really as efficient as we believe?
Jay Rutlet
My brother seems to think so. That's why he's so adamant about us moving in the.
Hope Ennis
But you have a point, Kylie. My friend Rita said her and her sister are still alone. They were apparently living with a creep, but he was moved. Not sure how, but he was. And no one else has come to replace him yet, so who knows?
Ambridge
See?
Hope Ennis
And it's fine. Even if they do bring us a new roommate, I mean, hopefully things won't be so bad. At least Ambridge and I still have each other.
Jay Rutlet
Kylie's comments about Ava and Ambridge instantly came to mind.
Ambridge
It's dumb, though. This place is small. They really shouldn't force four people to live here. It made sense for us since we all knew each other.
Mia
I agree, but I think they may just move in one. My buddy army says he lives in an RV with only two roommates.
Ambridge
How come everyone has friends?
Jay Rutlet
What army?
Ambridge
Rita, you guys make friends fast.
Jay Rutlet
I don't.
Ambridge
Jay, you work with your brother, sure?
Jay Rutlet
Yeah, but he's not a friend.
Ambridge
You still have someone to talk to. I'm out there roaming the green alone.
Mia
How's the south border?
Hope Ennis
What's the south border?
Mia
The golf course.
Ambridge
It's actually more than just a golf course. And as for how it's going, can't say I've made any friends.
Mia
How is it, though? As barren as the north?
Ambridge
I haven't seen the north, but south of the golf course is actually a full neighborhood.
Mia
Really? I thought it was barren.
Ambridge
Past the neighborhood? Sure. Just rolling hills and coastline. In fact, I asked if we moved to the south part of the neighborhood.
Jay Rutlet
Really? Why?
Ambridge
Less people, more scenic.
Jay Rutlet
And you wonder why you have no friends?
Ambridge
It's just too chaotic on the golf course.
Hope Ennis
They've started building a fence, right?
Ambridge
Yeah, now, but just by the highway. I think they're going to try to extend past the neighborhood because there's just too many homes available. Although they may tear some down to help build the fence.
Hope Ennis
Are people living over there?
Ambridge
Seems like it. It's insane, though, how much is open. It's a lot of land. And the highway connecting the two areas isn't that protected.
Mia
And we would know. We weren't stationed that far away previously.
Hope Ennis
How did you get that job again?
Mia
Guards.
Ambridge
Yeah, Ambridge and I applied and took a test.
Jay Rutlet
Right?
Mia
Yeah. Some target practice to prove we knew how to handle a gun.
Ambridge
And Ambridge won each time.
Mia
You came close on round three.
Ambridge
Next time we'll use bows.
Mia
And I'll lose every time.
Hope Ennis
Sucks they split you up.
Ambridge
Well, Ambridge seems to be doing okay. He's already got a buddy.
Mia
Hey, my buddy is friends with this guy Bryson. Met him yesterday. Bryson is in charge of security on the northern side. Maybe I can put in a good word.
Ambridge
Yeah, okay.
Mia
Don't want to come up north.
Ambridge
If I end up on Short Tail Gulch Trail, which I hope I do because it's south of the neighborhood, I'll be fine.
Jay Rutlet
If you're going to put in a good word, why not try to get it so you get a good roommate?
Mia
I don't have any poll right now, so I'll hold off on all favors for the time being.
Ambridge
It's so stupid that they are now fixing things up.
Hope Ennis
You don't think it's a good idea to make this area more secure?
Ambridge
No. I think it's weird that they're just doing it now.
Mia
Brought that up the army. Seems like there's no real sense of.
Hope Ennis
Danger, but they have experienced it. Rita said things were rough for weeks. Her and her sister had to hide from thrashers.
Mia
I don't doubt when all this began it was rough. But it seems like it wasn't enough to light a fire under their asses. Not when things got under control.
Jay Rutlet
Think it's because they want things to go back to normal?
Mia
Everyone wants things to go back to normal. But you can't just hide from the fact that one of those large creatures, the behemoths, makes its way through. They have nothing stopping it. Or. Or a herd of thrashers or stalkers.
Jay Rutlet
Or a ship.
Ambridge
But a ship doesn't even have to fly over. It could land half a mile from the golf course. And if they stick to the Coast. They could walk right up, blasting every house on the way.
Hope Ennis
But the fence will help with that?
Ambridge
Who knows? At least it's something.
Mia
There could be another reason for the lack of security and awareness.
Jay Rutlet
What's that?
Mia
Incompetence.
Jay Rutlet
You really think so?
Mia
None of us really know how this.
Hope Ennis
Place is running yet you love it.
Mia
Didn't say I love it. But compared out there, it's world's better.
Jay Rutlet
I agree. I may hate my job, but at least I have one.
Hope Ennis
But you hate it.
Ambridge
I told him to see if he could switch.
Jay Rutlet
I'm going to. I talked to Spencer, the guy in charge of harbor patrol. He said I'd have to talk to management, so I plan to do that this week.
Ambridge
Good.
Mia
What do you want to do?
Jay Rutlet
Just something different.
Hope Ennis
See, I'm fine with a boring job.
Jay Rutlet
You wouldn't rather be doing something else?
Hope Ennis
Maybe, but it helps pass the time.
Jay Rutlet
Ava, are you still having doubts?
Hope Ennis
Not really.
Jay Rutlet
Because I don't think you should leave.
Ambridge
You want to leave?
Hope Ennis
I'm not sure what I want. I do realize that my job will most likely wear on me, but it hasn't yet.
Jay Rutlet
But you should definitely do something more than just dishwashing.
Hope Ennis
I will. I want a hobby. Might even ask Rita to finally introduce me to her sister so she can show me a thing or two about gardening.
Mia
Wow. Ava's hobby. Kylie's new post. Jay wants a new job.
Ambridge
Things are evolving.
Jay Rutlet
Hey, can we do this often?
Mia
What, dinner?
Jay Rutlet
Yeah. It doesn't have to be every day, but maybe every week.
Mia
I'm good with that.
Hope Ennis
Me too.
Ambridge
That would be nice.
Mia
It they began construction on a fence just south of Bodega Dunes Road. There were only a few guards up here, but there were nearly 50 builders. I turned my attention to the work, wondering how long it would take them to construct it. All around two, a small golf cart pulled up. I thought I'd be my replacement for lunch, but no. It was army and Bryson, the man in charge of security in this section of Bodega Bay. Ambridge. You can't be my replacement.
Jay Rutlet
I'm not. Troy wants to talk to you.
Mia
Troy?
Jay Rutlet
The big guy with the beard.
Mia
Oh, right.
Kylie
Hop in.
Mia
I climbed into the back and we took off towards the camp. You guys are just leaving it open?
Kylie
Replacements are on their way.
Mia
Yeah.
Ambridge
See?
Mia
Army pointed over my shoulder at a truck heading down a dirt road. Eventually, the trees at the campground appeared over the hills and we pulled onto a paved road over to a pavilion.
Cohen
He's waiting for you.
Ambridge
Here.
Mia
Where are you going?
Jay Rutlet
With him? No, just him. What the hell am I doing here? I needed you to find him. Oh, come on.
Mia
Thanks, guys. I hopped out of the cart and made my way to the pavilion. Under the large domed roof set several men smoking and checking weapons. But I knew exactly who Troy was. You asked for me? You Ambridge?
Jay Rutlet
Yeah.
Mia
You traveled across the country after all? This started all the way from the East Coast. All the men stopped working and glared at me. Army told Bryson, you've seen a lot. I guess you could say that. Here, welcome me. Troy got up and put his hand on my shoulder, leading me back the way I came. He pulled a pack of cigarettes from his vest pocket. You smoke? Only on occasions. And only cigars. Okay, well, I don't have any on me right now, but I'll remember that. He led me to the parking lot where several vehicles were parked, going to an open top jeep. Where are we going? To meet with the boss man. Man, just keep moving up this hierarchy, huh.
Hope Ennis
Sam?
Travis
So how'd the move go with your friends?
Hope Ennis
Smoothly, but it's not like they had a lot of stuff.
Travis
No need for a U Haul then?
Hope Ennis
Nope.
Travis
Makes sense. How'd you sleep?
Hope Ennis
You mean with not having them there? Okay. Only woke up twice. Ambridge, too?
Travis
Yeah. Is it awkward now that it's just the two of you?
Hope Ennis
No, no, we get along, but we know it's not going to last. Although I did mention to them that you and your sister were still living on your own, so maybe it would be a while before room and board got to us.
Travis
Yeah, room and board. They've. They've had quite the shakeup, apparently.
Hope Ennis
What do you mean?
Travis
Let's just say this place is going through a lot of revisions.
Hope Ennis
Well, that's just wonderful.
Travis
Tell me about it.
Hope Ennis
Ambridge did mention how it was weird that they were so lax with security.
Travis
Yeah, but only kind of.
Hope Ennis
What do you mean?
Travis
Well, you didn't hear this from me, but security by the campground is really heavy.
Hope Ennis
Ambridge says not on the north side.
Mia
Hmm.
Travis
Really?
Hope Ennis
I shrugged. That's what he says.
Travis
Well, I don't see why not. They have plenty of guards. I mean, Bodega Bay is a pretty.
Hope Ennis
Big area, but still seems like maybe they're stretching themselves a little thin.
Travis
Well, they are building fences now.
Hope Ennis
So they're taking it more seriously.
Travis
I guess so. But at the end of the day, the most important thing is that you don't make any of this an excuse.
Hope Ennis
Excuse for what?
Travis
An excuse for coming down on this place. I can see you working something up in that head of yours.
Hope Ennis
What are you Talking about?
Travis
Don't kid me, girl. We may be new friends, but I already know how your brain works.
Hope Ennis
Relax. I'm not going anywhere. And. And I'm not thinking of going anywhere either. I've talked to Jay and Ambridge and you enough to know that I'll make do.
Travis
So you're good then?
Hope Ennis
Sure. For now. I can't promise it'll last, though.
Travis
That's okay. I understand.
Hope Ennis
And I'm actually going to say something that may even shock you.
Travis
Shock me? Oh, my goodness. I can't wait.
Hope Ennis
She stopped washing dishes, dried her hands, and turned to face me with her arms crossed.
Travis
Lay it on me, girl.
Hope Ennis
I actually think I may, at some point, even like it here. Is that so? Maybe I can live with. Maybe the mundane is actually appealing to me. I'm still very torn inside about my future plans, but maybe washing dishes and having a home to go to every night is helping the structure of a regular life helps counteract all the confusion and heartache. And with just Ambridge and I, we're able to stretch out a bit.
Travis
Well, I'm glad, Ava. I know it isn't perfect. I mean, what could be right now? But rumor has it that not only are they expanding, but they're gonna work really hard at making things better here. I mean, I heard they want to turn the golf course into this whole farming community. Like, sounds so dope. Like, can you imagine some farmer's market making a day of it every Saturday morning?
Hope Ennis
That would be nice. And speaking of farming, I was wondering if your sister would be willing to finally meet me so I could learn a little bit about gardening myself.
Travis
Yeah, I'll talk to her tonight.
Cohen
Here, sit, sit.
Mia
Okay. The man known as Cohen was tall, had hunched shoulders and an awkwardness about him. He led me and Troy into the living room, which was large, open, neatly decorated with vintage furniture.
Cohen
So, Ambridge. Is that a first name or a last?
Mia
Last name. Oh, don't care much for my first name.
Cohen
Which is?
Mia
Paul.
Cohen
What's wrong with that?
Mia
Had a friend named Paul in high school. He was an abrasive loud mouth, yet.
Cohen
He was a friend.
Mia
For a short period after high school, we didn't stay in touch. He eventually became a cop, and I joined the army. Once I did, I felt Ambridge was a better fit.
Cohen
Right. Army? Troy here was army.
Mia
Were you left over from the qz? That's right. Troy sat in a leather chair across from me and put his feet up on the matching ottoman. But Cohen still stood.
Cohen
And thank God he did.
Mia
Cohen came around the couch Running his hand along the back.
Cohen
I'm sure you're wondering why you're here.
Mia
A little.
Cohen
We heard that you traveled all the way across the country.
Mia
I did.
Cohen
You were stationed at a QZ in Pennsylvania.
Mia
A little town called Wanomi, I believe. But before that I was in New York.
Cohen
Not the city?
Mia
No.
Cohen
And you came all this way?
Mia
That's right.
Cohen
Wow, that's impressive. I hear it's pretty bad out there.
Mia
Oh, it is.
Cohen
Well, that's why you're here. We're trying to talk to people who've been outside of Bodega Bay and have any information about the aliens or really anything that could help us better our living situation here. And obviously we appreciate any info you can share. My wife even set up some gift baskets.
Mia
Sorry, but. He motioned across the hall. On the dining room table set four baskets of canned and bagged food, flowers and other miscellaneous items like flashlights, batteries, lighters and other survival items, all neatly wrapped in cellophane. Oh, thanks. This was weird.
Cohen
You know, most of the people we've talked with so far were people who've traveled maybe 50 or so miles. But for you to travel from the east coast, I mean, you've had to see a lot.
Mia
Sure. I decided to be up front and I can tell you with a good amount of certainty you guys have been lucky.
Cohen
Yeah, is that so?
Mia
I was told you haven't had many attacks. And that shocks me, being so close to San Francisco.
Cohen
We know that area has been demolished and overrun. Big cities were hit hard.
Mia
Yeah, but it's not just big cities. When's the last time a ship came through the big one that came to rest over San Francisco?
Cohen
But we've seen others, right Troy?
Mia
Sure, but they never fly overhead. A couple smaller ones headed east and one by a month and a half ago was spotted flying north over the water. They spray vegetation, algae like substance. We know. We've seen it when gathering supplies from our experiences. It's non toxic.
Cohen
It is.
Mia
We've walked through it and Carrie even got the stuff all over her body and face.
Cohen
Why the hell did she do that?
Mia
She tripped, Cohen. Oh well, I've eaten this stuff. They both stared at me wide eyed.
Cohen
Why in the hell would you do that?
Mia
Ship came in overhead, shot that gunk all over our car, Came in through the air vents. There was no way to dodge it.
Cohen
When was this?
Mia
A long time ago.
Cohen
Well that's reassuring.
Mia
I grinned. Cohen. Troy made a weird gesture with his hand, pointing to the ceiling.
Cohen
Oh yes. We actually want to know more about your encounter With. With the big creature.
Mia
Behemoth.
Cohen
Yes, that.
Mia
Cohen took a seat on the couch across from me and leaned forward.
Cohen
You fought one, right?
Mia
I mean, I shot at it.
Cohen
And you scared it away.
Mia
No. I almost died. Some other survivors were able to hit it with rockets, scaring it off.
Cohen
Scaring it?
Robert M. Lamb
That didn't kill it.
Mia
No. But I don't remember how many hits they got. I was kind of in a daze, watching my life flash before my eyes. No wonder you think we're exposed. You definitely are.
Cohen
We've had a few people tell us about the things, but none of them had a good look.
Mia
Well, I did. The towering creature was no more than 20 yards away.
Cohen
Where was this?
Mia
South of here. South of San Francisco. Not entirely sure though.
Cohen
But you never saw anything like that before then?
Mia
Heard one, I think. Back near San Diego.
Cohen
So both in California.
Mia
Only creatures before that were thrashers, shriekers and stalkers.
Cohen
Stalkers?
Mia
The ones that wear masks. You've seen them? Once, just outside Santa Rosa. They have weapons. Oh, I know.
Cohen
Troy here has seen a lot I haven't. And neither of us have seen or experienced as much as you.
Mia
I imagine that wasn't surprising.
Cohen
See, we want to make sure this place is as safe as can be. I'm sure you know all the rules and regulations of this area and you work as a guard, so you understand that we're trying to carry on as best we can.
Mia
I do.
Cohen
We need to make sure that this place can keep going. We need to make sure no aliens break through, no vegetation starts to grow, no behemoths destroy what we're trying to build up.
Mia
That's admirable.
Cohen
Yeah. But do you think it's possible?
Mia
I. I mean, sure, sure, but it'll take a lot of work. He finally leaned back and ran a hand through his hair.
Cohen
We're aware. We have a lot of plans for this place. We're making big moves.
Mia
That may be so, but it really seemed like they'd been pushing their luck. Maybe they'll take things seriously now. But then I got another glimpse of the gift baskets and instantly changed my mind.
Hope Ennis
This way.
Travis
Don't mind all the furniture and boxes.
Hope Ennis
It's chaos. I'm so sorry we really spoke this into existence, huh?
Travis
I know better too.
Hope Ennis
Two days later and I was at Rita's place. Apparently yesterday, someone from room and board, or housing as they like to be called now, came and told Rita that there were two people that had to be moved in. An old lady and her middle aged son who showed up with a wheelbarrow full of belongings. Apparently they had come in with a group a few days ago and they're still setting up the room.
Travis
Yeah, like there's three bedrooms here. I have one, my sister has one. And now this random old lady has one. Her son is gonna take the den. We have a den? That's great. But they're. Yeah, they're moving all the furniture around and stuff. I'm again, so sorry.
Hope Ennis
Oh, yeah.
Travis
And apparently, like, you know, they're just upset as we are. They really liked the lodge that they were staying at near the golf course, but housing made them move here.
Hope Ennis
Why?
Travis
Well, I heard that they're using the lodge for the builders now.
Hope Ennis
Where are they now? The lady and her son?
Travis
I don't know. Maybe they went to get some food. Nina and I are going to have a chat with her later to figure out how we can make this work. You know, we never did that with the creep.
Hope Ennis
Well, hopefully everything works out.
Travis
Yeah, fingers crossed.
Hope Ennis
She was just about to open the sliding door when I quickly stopped her. Hey, you're sure your sister is okay with this?
Travis
Yeah. I mean, I already told her that we had new roommates. Why should she shun the rest of society? Plus, you're a chica and you're cool.
Hope Ennis
So she won't be upset.
Travis
I mean, she may be a little standoffish at first, especially with what's going on in the apartment, but just ask a lot of questions. She loves answering questions. She'll open up in no time.
Hope Ennis
Okay.
Mia
What are you going to do?
Jay Rutlet
Hi.
Dana
You come in with the new group?
Jay Rutlet
I look back at the crowded hall. Oh, no.
Dana
What can I do for you then?
Jay Rutlet
I wanted to see about other career opportunities. The woman's smiled almost sardonically, as if she was smiling at my stupidity. Or jobs.
Travis
Okay.
Dana
Are you working right now?
Jay Rutlet
Yes.
Dana
Doing what?
Jay Rutlet
Unloading supplies at the docks.
Dana
Okay. And what are you looking to do?
Jay Rutlet
Something else.
Dana
Well, the only thing we really have opened right now is building and guard duty.
Mia
Duty?
Dana
Can you shoot?
Jay Rutlet
Not really.
Dana
Want to build?
Jay Rutlet
Not really. Isn't there something else at the harbor?
Dana
Nothing that I know of. Nothing right now.
Jay Rutlet
What about sailing?
Dana
No. You can put your name down for a transfer, but odds are no one is going anywhere until they get more builders and guards.
Jay Rutlet
Seriously?
Dana
That's the way it is.
Jay Rutlet
I was about to turn and head out, but stopped myself. What about research? At that. The woman looked up over her glasses.
Dana
Research?
Jay Rutlet
Yeah.
Dana
What kind of research?
Jay Rutlet
I guess all kinds. Is there like a research department?
Dana
No, we don't do research here, sir. We gather supplies, we sort supplies, we guard our borders, we run our chains and we build. There isn't a place for research.
Jay Rutlet
Well, there should be. Because I work on the docks for the past few days, I've noticed more and more dead fish.
Dana
So?
Jay Rutlet
So it's alarming. And I know we fish here have helped unload the boats, but if fish are winding up dead, there's a reason for it. Maybe it's some kind of bacteria. A red tide. Although I don't think that's it. But it could have something to do with the aliens. They're building something in San Francisco.
Dana
You know, building something?
Jay Rutlet
Yes, a tower of some sort. We've seen it. They built one in Denver, too.
Dana
What kind of tower? Tower?
Jay Rutlet
I don't know.
Dana
Maybe you should do research on that first.
Jay Rutlet
I will. If I can get on a boat.
Dana
I can put you in for boat duty. And when they have an opening, they'll let you know. Then you can travel up and down the coast and inspect your little fish problem. Although you will be labeled under coast supplies, which means you'll sail to gather supplies with others.
Jay Rutlet
So no actual research?
Dana
Listen, sir, no one's stopping you from your little research on the side. You want to pick up some dead fish and dissect them, by all means, yes.
Jay Rutlet
But I would like to get paid for my efforts.
Dana
It's not a top priority.
Jay Rutlet
Is there someone else I can talk to?
Dana
No. Now, do you want to be put in for coat supplies or. Or do you want to stay a land guy?
Jay Rutlet
How long's the list?
Dana
I'll put it this way. There were 200 people on the list for transfers before this new group of a little over 300 came in. Everyone wants work, but you won't be able to move if you're not on the list.
Jay Rutlet
Fine. Put me down.
Ambridge
It was a nice warm day. But the closer I got to the beach, the cooler it got. Didn't mean I wasn't still sweating my ass off. I wasn't even sure I should be down this far on the trail. I was told there was another guard at the end, but I didn't see them yet. It took nearly a week, but I finally had my first day on Short Tail Gulch Trail. And I liked was peaceful. No sounds of building, no lively chatter. Just wind blowing through the reeds. Behind me, the nice neighborhood before me. Nothing but hill after grassy hill. I reached back and wiped sweat from my neck. I could feel that my hair had grown a decent amount. But would I let it grow out? As long as it Was previously. Where the hell was this other guard? Should I inform Lex? Lex was the one who gave me the post over here. Maybe she would.
Shannon
How do you do that?
Ambridge
I froze and looked around, but saw no one. Where the hell did that come from?
Shannon
Up here.
Ambridge
I kept turning until I saw her waving. The tiny, fit woman with short hair waved to me from the balcony of the nearest home. Oh, hi.
Jay Rutlet
I love your hair.
Ambridge
I noticed that the woman had an M4 in her other hand, but I could barely hear her. What?
Hope Ennis
I love your hair.
Ambridge
Oh, thanks. I had to tilt my head so I can hear her better since nothing got through my right ear anymore. Um, are you. Are you the other guard?
Shannon
Yeah. Come up. I'll get the door.
Ambridge
I wasn't sure if I should do that, but before I could respond, she had already disappeared into the home. I took a moment looking up and down the trail. Should I leave my post? Uh, just for a second. I stepped over some bent wire fence and then up the grassy incline, pushing my way through flowers and buckwheat. Eventually, I reached a loop. A woman was waiting at the front door of the home. Once again, she waved. No one else was around. The neighborhood deserted.
Hope Ennis
Hi there.
Ambridge
The house looked more like a compound. With its sharp edges, narrow windows and flat roof. It really stood out among the more traditional homes down the street.
Shannon
Name's Shannon.
Ambridge
I'm Kylie.
Shannon
Let me guess. They dragged you from a much comfier spot. Or did you just arrive in Bodega Bay?
Ambridge
No, I've been here a while and actually, I like this post more than the golf course.
Shannon
Oh, the golf course is horrible. I'm glad they decided to expand even further. I mean, look at this.
Ambridge
She motioned to the street and rows of homes.
Shannon
They complain about lack of room, but they don't use this.
Ambridge
Until now.
Shannon
They wised up.
Ambridge
Come in. I took a quick look back at the trail and rolling hills.
Shannon
It's fine. Trust me. Lex won't come down this far.
Ambridge
Okay.
Shannon
Follow me.
Ambridge
The house was pretty bare, save for some heavy furniture.
Shannon
So I've only been over here like five days now.
Ambridge
Five days?
Hope Ennis
Yeah, five.
Shannon
But I've already been hit on four of those five days. So. Love that you're here now. Maybe you can take some of the unwanted attention.
Ambridge
Lex doesn't help out with that.
Shannon
I haven't mentioned it to Lex. Or do you mean does she get some of the same treatment as me? Because that's possible. She's pretty, but man, her attitude and the way she talks to people can be a bit much. Unless the Dudes here into a bossy woman. I don't think she's shouldering much, so.
Ambridge
Even if she gets the attention, she can handle it.
Shannon
I, on the other hand, am too nice. Something I definitely need to work on. But is it my fault? Guys take that as an invitation to try to smooth move their way into my pants. I mean, I've been pretty friendly with you so far and I'm sure you don't think I'm trying to bang.
Ambridge
I didn't think that. No.
Hope Ennis
See?
Shannon
And here we are. The perfect vantage point.
Ambridge
Wow.
Shannon
Yeah, she was right.
Ambridge
The moment we stepped out onto the balcony, I could see the entire beach. Much of the trail and about a mile over the hills.
Shannon
Walking the trail is dumb. All they need is someone here. And maybe someone in that home down there. And you're good. You can see everything.
Ambridge
Why don't they do that?
Shannon
Because they're dumb. Hell, I made a suggestion at my last post about forming a wall with stalled cars and that got shut right down.
Ambridge
Do you think it has to do with you being a. You know.
Shannon
Oh no, I don't think it's sexism, if that's what you mean. I think they just have a very select few who make decisions and they don't care to upset the balance.
Ambridge
They?
Shannon
You know, the lower level management. Like Lex. She does what she's told. It's nothing different than when I worked selling clothes.
Ambridge
I guess you're right.
Shannon
Although it's not lost on me now that I think about my ranting mere moments ago.
Ambridge
No, but I get what you're saying.
Shannon
The fact that I'm here and you speaks volumes.
Ambridge
Sure, I guess you're right.
Shannon
And heck, Lex is in charge of our line down here.
Ambridge
You said she's never come down this far. Yet you've only been here five days. How can you be so sure?
Shannon
She's bossy and lazy. Haven't seen her over here yet.
Ambridge
I walked over to the railing and leaned over. The trail was longer than I thought. Did I really walk that whole way? In the distance I could see another guard pacing. He was an older man who came in the same time as me. Dustin, I believe.
Shannon
Hey. Sorry for shouting at you. You seemed a bit confused.
Ambridge
Didn't know where it was coming from. And I can't hear anything out of my right ear.
Shannon
Oh, bummer. Sorry. I wanted to catch you before you made it to the beach. Also, your hair. It's beautiful.
Ambridge
Really? I awkwardly pulled a few loose strands from my sweaty brow. It's a lot shorter than I'm used to. My boyfriend actually cut it for me, and he did a surprisingly good job.
Shannon
You did?
Ambridge
It still needs some work, but I'll probably let it grow out a little more. Not that I even really care. Not a necessity right now.
Shannon
I hear you. I cut my hair short because this ocean breeze, this salty air, just makes it poof out. I have naturally frizzy hair, though. Darn genetics. If I let it grow to my usual length, I'd look like Rosanna. Rosanna? Dana?
Ambridge
Really?
Shannon
Oh, yeah. I keep it short now. Although, because I'm short in height and now have short hair, I've had to change my whole personality.
Ambridge
What do you mean?
Shannon
I got to be more spunky now. More personable, which is not my strong suit.
Ambridge
Could have fooled me.
Shannon
Am I coming on too strong?
Ambridge
No, it's fine.
Shannon
That's a relief. Here, have a seat.
Ambridge
But I was still unsure about leaving my post.
Shannon
Even if you sit, you can see everything. Any alien comes running over those hills, we'll see him. Trust me.
Ambridge
I reluctantly took a seat.
Shannon
If we do get into trouble, you can blame it all on me.
Ambridge
Okay. She took the other chair, rested her gun on the wall next to her, and put her feet up on the small square table.
Shannon
Now this is guard duty.
Mia
Oh, Kylie made a friend.
Hope Ennis
Shut was the next Friday, and we were all having dinner once again. It seemed like this really would become a tradition. Which was nice.
Ambridge
I don't know that. Well. She just called out to me and we started chatting.
Mia
Just don't fall asleep in that chair. They catch you dozing off.
Ambridge
I won't.
Mia
What about you, Jay? Make any new friends or still stuck with your brother?
Jay Rutlet
No friends. But I spent some time with dad this week. Walks are good for him, so he's trying to get back into the habit.
Ambridge
We also played some games with him and your nephews, too. Sorry, we don't have. Sorry. Just Monopoly, checkers and cards.
Jay Rutlet
We taught them rummy. The kids had fun.
Ambridge
They get bored easily.
Jay Rutlet
Well, Andy and Charlotte don't play with them enough. They're so serious about things all the time.
Ambridge
Yeah, they need something. Shannon says she paints in her spare time.
Mia
Shannon?
Ambridge
My new friend.
Hope Ennis
Ah, she paints.
Ambridge
Said she loved painting before the invasion. So she still does it.
Mia
I mean, it's not like anyone is working overtime, right? What else is there to do?
Ambridge
Feels wrong, though.
Mia
I get that. Like we should be doing more.
Hope Ennis
I always feel that way.
Jay Rutlet
But what about your friend and her gardening sister?
Hope Ennis
I went over to Rita's house this week. Met with her sister, Nina. She showed Me her garden and gave me some pointers on how to start my own.
Mia
Will you?
Hope Ennis
Possibly. I like your brother and sister in law, Jay. Need something?
Ambridge
I think we all do. No matter how normal things seem here, it still feels off.
Hope Ennis
Like it's all pretend. Ambridge shot me a playful look.
Ambridge
Sometimes maybe having hobbies is a good thing.
Jay Rutlet
It helped pass the time.
Hope Ennis
And I'd love to be able to grow my own food.
Jay Rutlet
I think it'll make you happier. At least with this place.
Hope Ennis
Jay, you know it's not just this place.
Jay Rutlet
I know.
Ambridge
Well, I think gardening is a fantastic idea. They plan to turn the golf course into a farming area. It'll help with the food supply.
Jay Rutlet
I don't know how they can be so low on supplies.
Hope Ennis
Are they?
Jay Rutlet
They say they are.
Hope Ennis
Who's they?
Jay Rutlet
Everyone. It's all I hear about on the docks. No matter how much they bring in, it's never enough. But all we do is unload boats every day.
Ambridge
There are a lot more people now.
Jay Rutlet
Yeah, a large group just came in this week. Apparently so.
Hope Ennis
They just keep going up and down the coast, rummaging through houses.
Jay Rutlet
Not so much down, more up. I think they want to stay away from San Francisco.
Mia
Makes sense. But I agree with you. I saw one of their supply shipments two days ago. Three trucks full. I know there's a lot of people here, but with how big this town is and all the stuff left by the military and the constant supply runs, I don't see how they can be low.
Ambridge
Were the trucks filled with food or building equipment for the walls?
Mia
Yeah, I think both, but I couldn't really tell. They were driving along the hills up north.
Ambridge
Going where?
Mia
Other side of the bay.
Hope Ennis
The side that was closed off?
Ambridge
Yeah, it was closed off.
Hope Ennis
Yeah. Same with the campground.
Jay Rutlet
That's where a lot of the supplies from the docks go too.
Mia
Other side of the bay?
Jay Rutlet
Yeah. Not all, but a lot.
Hope Ennis
Maybe there's a warehouse or something over there.
Mia
Looks like just houses to me.
Hope Ennis
I just shrugged.
Jay Rutlet
It's a lot of stuff. And it's both food and other supplies.
Mia
What about fish?
Jay Rutlet
No, I don't think so. I think the fish is taken to the grocery stores.
Ambridge
They have power. Gotta refrigerate it.
Jay Rutlet
Except if I were you guys, I wouldn't touch any of the fish. Not the fresh caught stuff.
Mia
Why?
Ambridge
Jay says there's been a lot of dead fish washing up on shore.
Hope Ennis
Red tide or maybe some kind of disease?
Jay Rutlet
Possibly.
Ambridge
Jay wants to look into it, but they don't care.
Hope Ennis
They don't.
Jay Rutlet
I went down to the Management office. See if I could switch up my job.
Hope Ennis
How did that go?
Jay Rutlet
Can't switch. But they put me on a list for a transfer. I also asked if I could focus on research that could get me out of the importing business, but they said no. She laughed at me, too. I told her it could be important, but she said there were no research jobs available. They don't do research here.
Mia
Well, okay, but couldn't you still. Research could be like a hobby.
Jay Rutlet
That's what the lady said, minus the hobby part.
Mia
Well.
Ambridge
You could, Jay. Shannon paints. Ava's thinking about taking up gardening. If you think this is important, work on it.
Jay Rutlet
I need access to a lot of different tools. I'd also need access to a boat.
Mia
Okay, well, we came on a boat.
Jay Rutlet
They use it for supply runs. I doubt I'd be able to use it for research.
Hope Ennis
Ambridge set down his knife and fork and rubbed his chin. What are you thinking?
Mia
Uh, just wondering if there's someone I can talk to.
Jay Rutlet
Really?
Hope Ennis
Ambridge did speak to one of the higher ups this week.
Mia
The higher up? The highest of ups.
Ambridge
Holy shit. What for?
Mia
He asked about my travels across the country. Asked what I saw.
Hope Ennis
That's where that gift basket came from. I motioned to the unopened gift on the ground by the couch.
Jay Rutlet
A gift basket?
Mia
It was weird.
Hope Ennis
You gonna see if you can pull some strings? Seems like you've been dying to try.
Mia
Probably not with him, but maybe I can ask Army.
Jay Rutlet
The Army?
Mia
Oh, Army Armando. He's the guy I've been working with. He's my buddy. My Shannon.
Hope Ennis
Ambridge smirked at Kylie, rolled her eyes.
Mia
Army knows some people, Bryson, who I told you guys about. The one in charge of the security in the north. And both of them know this guy, Troy, who's like, I don't know, a middleman between Cohen and everyone else, I guess.
Ambridge
And you talk to them all?
Mia
A little, yeah.
Ambridge
Look at you, making moves.
Mia
Wasn't really trying to.
Jay Rutlet
Can you really do that? Can you ask them about the boat?
Mia
I'll try. I can't make any promises. I barely know them. But it's worth a shot. Maybe at least I can drop a hint about the importance of this fish issue.
Jay Rutlet
It is important. Because if what's happening to the fish isn't natural, it means it's unnatural. Alien. Related.
Hope Ennis
And with that, we all fell silent.
