Dr. Shannon Urban
Welcome to the Epic Success podcast. I AM your host, Dr. Shannon Urban. Okay. I'm back from a little break where we really started up leveling our Epic Success team. And I'm going to be sharing a little bit about how transitioning out of working from somebody else, building my own business. I just want to share, like, the journey that I've been on, because I think for those of you that are wanting to start your own business, or maybe you're in a 9 to 5 and you're maybe even a C suite person like I was, but you're wanting to have more flexibility, more freedom in your life, and you're wanting to honestly be there for your kids, for your family, for the next generation in ways that you haven't been able to up until now. I know that was my heart. My heart was I want to be able to use all the skill, the knowledge, the learning, the experience that I have, but I don't really want that to go toward someone else's dream anymore. Like it was okay up until a point, but there became a point where I said to myself, why not me? Why not me? Why couldn't I? And so that's what we're going to be talking about today. I'm going to be breaking down the three main steps that I took to make the big leap to start the business online, to grow it. There's plenty of podcast episodes that I have about the growth part of the journey, but this part, this podcast episode is dedicated to those of you, those moms, those nine to fivers. You've been successful, but, you know, it's time, like, you know, it's time to start the thing, you know, it's time now. We're going to be diving in how you do that financially, responsibly. But I think you and I are a lot alike. So I want to share that part of the journey because I don't think I've talked about that. And I think it's a part of the journey that is very important. Shifting from your 9 to 5 into a full time coaching business, creating freedom in your life, the ability to be with your kids at everything that they do if you so choose. And honestly, the ability to go wherever you want to go and build life on your terms and leave a legacy for your children instead of just saying that they could do anything that you want to do, you actually really show them. All right, so buckle up. That's what we're gonna be doing on the Epic Success podcast today. Here we go. All right, so my story, so it's been a while, but I wanted to share this journey when I was working 9 to 5 and I don't know about you, but for me I always had that, I meant for more feeling. I've always had that I want to impact people's lives. Feeling like, want to make my life count. And as you probably know, if you've been listening to the podcast for a while, I'm a God girl. In my world, it's God first, family second, business is third. But I want my businesses to impact as many people as humanly possible, right? So it was a journey from the moment that thought of I want something more, I want to do something more. And the, the, the conversation in my head was, went something like this. Every ounce of my energy I pour into everything that I do. So of course in my nine to five, I was in the restaurant industry. I ended up opening my own restaurant in my 20s and then I sold that restaurant because I didn't want to have to work 18, 19 hour days. And I love the industry, still love the industry. But then I went and started working nine to five doing sales, doing marketing, that kind of thing. And I loved it. I love sales, I love marketing, I love serving. But what I noticed, and it happened pretty quickly was I was, I had the skills to do great, right? And I'm a driven person, just like you probably, right? So give me a task and I'm going to like do it to like I'm going to 10x it. And I would do that. So I would quickly. I quickly got promoted, I quickly became a director. All which was great for my ego but not great for my dreams. Do you know what I'm saying? So as I was starting to really think through. I gotta stop thinking like I'm dreaming here if you're watching me on video. But I was thinking through this the other day and I was like, wow. I remember the moment where I said to myself, I meant for something more. Like I meant to not just build someone else's dream with my abilities, but I'm meant to build my own. I'm meant to really get out there. And then of course those thoughts immediately went, what are you doing? Like you've got a great paycheck, like you got respect, you have a title, it's great. Like sh, you know, simmer down now, right? My brain was trying to take my dreams and collapse them into what is safe and familiar. But if any, if you're anything like me, like that just kept getting louder, louder and louder and louder. And every sale I would make. I would think, gosh, what if this is my own business? Every marketing campaign that would crush. I would think, gosh, I could do this for my own company. And at the same time, I was finishing up a master's certification and not master's certification, a master's degree in business. And I was a new mom. So lots of things going on where my mom is at out there, right? We can. We can. We have a lot of balls in the air, so to speak. Once I had my son, that. This. That voice of it's time to shift things, it's time to grow your own just got louder and louder and louder. And the reason for that was I started missing things, and I didn't want to miss anything. Like, I didn't want to miss a moment, a word, a kicked soccer ball. And I just did a whole series on my Instagram and TikTok all about the. The day that I missed my daughter's soccer goal. And I had to tell her that I wasn't paying attention because I was on the phone doing work for somebody else. But here's the thing. There's this thing called security. So I started reaching out to old business partners and offering coaching. And it was in an industry that I was very comfortable with, the restaurant industry. And I was able to close a couple sales and kind of do it on the side. I'm like, this is amazing. Like, I'm able to coach these couple restaurant owners and still keep my job. And so it is something that I'm going to call. One of the steps is, is that you create a plan, you craft a plan, and then you let the business grow to the point where it equals the income you are at. So I didn't rip off the band aid. I didn't make some financial decision for my family that would make it really, really difficult. I bet on myself, and I started taking a couple clients. And what I notice is I would hit a ceiling I could only get so far. And if you've been following the podcast, you've probably heard my entrepreneur glass ceiling story about getting to the business to 199,000, but I'd somehow cool it back off to 160, 170. Please hear me. It was a great amount of money that we built over time, but I still had the job, and I was getting ready to let it go, right? Because I was at that point. But what was bothering me was I couldn't get past that point no matter how hard I tried. And this is for a different podcast, a different day. But that's what made me take a hard right turn to start to obsess around why I thought differently than my mentor. Which then led me getting a PhD in neuropsychology to study the science of success. Which then led to the sync neuro coach model. The mind matrix debt are and all the processes in which we coach people through in our coaching program, high performance coaching program and we certify coaches in how to get brain based results. And that set my brain free, that released all the old stories, removed the limiting beliefs and built a success pathway. We call it flipping the brain success switch on. We'll talk about that in a different podcast episode. But that was the moment when I realized that it was important enough once the income equaled. Where I wanted to go is knowing how to coach that right way. Knowing how to get people those results was everything to a coaching business. And with the clients that I had, I asked them, can you, I want to use this, you know, science backed model and help you get to the next level. And not just with myself but with my clients, they were starting to get extraordinarily fast results by getting this brain based results coaching. And so I knew like I needed, I can't just do one on one anymore. I've got to grow this in a way that I help more people. Have you ever thought that like even maybe you already took the jump and you have one on one clients but you're like how do I help more people? And it's really, it's, it's in the way that transition from the 9 to 5 into full time coaching that starts to really create the freedom and what happens in your brain and in my brain at that time, there's a lot of risk, right? What if I, what if I don't keep the sales up? What if it doesn't work? But I knew that the model worked and you really as a coach, we're only doing one thing. We're getting results for clients. And if I could do anything for coaches out there or those who are thinking about coaching or those who are wanting to start a little side hustle of coaching to be able to leave your nine to five one day is this, get the skill to get brain based results. Because what happened at that point when I started developing the models and then using those models is that I would get 100% results for my clients 100% of the time. And it was crazy and it was amazing and I felt like I was honoring God in that right. And those people stayed and then those people Renewed and then those people referred. I call that the R3 funnel, the best funnel marketing funnel on the planet. Learn the skills, get your clients results, have those results, keep them in our world and then have them refer other people. And that's the secret sauce that a lot of people chasing marketing strategies don't see. It's the skill that creates the scale. Let me say that again. It's the skill that creates the scale. So I just wanted to share a little bit about my journey from moving out of the nine to five. And really the linchpin was the brain based results skill of coaching. And we've developed that into a certification. We also coach in our high performance coaching. Through that I have a training video, just goes deeper in how to get true results for your clients which creates this funnel of the R3 funnel, which creates results for your clients. They renew and they refer. And there's nothing better than clients bringing more clients that are perfect into your world so that you can give your notice to your 9 to 5 and create that freedom to be with your kids, to be with your family, to serve deeply and to make a difference in the world. All right, we're just getting warmed back up to getting into the podcast. I just wanted to share that personal story in the show notes. I'll put the link to the training. It's a 15 minute video that really talks through the process that I worked through and walked through so that you can know how to do that too. Because the skill creates the scale. And my mission is that every coach learns the skill. Every coach learns the skill. Because that's the magic sauce, right? That's what gets people telling you. That's how you get known. That's how people get that audience growth on scale levels that you've never had before. All right, that's what I have for you this week on the Epic Success podcast.
