In Episode 216 of the Equipping ELLs podcast, Beth Vaucher addresses the Sunday evening reality most ELL teachers know well — sitting in front of a blank document with a roster of students at different levels and absolutely no idea where to begin. Most teachers default to collecting disconnected resources that feel productive in the moment but produce no lasting language growth because nothing builds on anything else. This episode offers a completely different approach.

Beth opens by naming the core problem with how most ELL lesson planning happens: horizontal planning. One skill per day, one topic per week, one vocabulary set that disappears as soon as the next one arrives. Language does not build that way. Language is acquired through repeated, varied exposure to the same vocabulary and structures in meaningful context over time — and horizontal planning produces the opposite of that.

The framework Beth introduces has four stages that work together to create connected, purposeful instruction across two to four weeks. Stage one is knowing your students — not through test scores from months ago but through real-time observation. Beth simplifies this to three questions: what language stage is each group at, which domain shows the biggest gap, and what language function are students struggling with most. She names the language function question as the one most commonly missing from ELL planning — not what vocabulary students are missing but what they cannot yet do with language. Describe but not explain. Answer but not compare. Tell what happened but not why.

Stage two is setting the two to four week focus — and making just two decisions. First, which language function will you develop? One, not three. Every lesson for the next several weeks builds toward students using that function more independently. Second, what is the vocabulary thread — the eight to ten words that will appear in speaking, in reading, and in writing repeatedly across the entire unit until students stop thinking about them and simply use them. Beth reflects honestly on her own early teaching practice of introducing words once in a matching activity and moving on, and names what real vocabulary acquisition requires: the same words encountered in a picture prompt, a close reading passage, a sentence frame, and a writing task over multiple weeks.

Stage three is threading skills across every lesson rather than teaching each in isolation. Beth walks through a specific lesson structure that hits all four domains in thirty minutes: a five-minute speaking routine with a picture prompt and tiered frames, a fifteen to twenty minute close reading activity with vocabulary from the thread embedded in the text, a ten-minute writing output using the language function frame, and a two-minute closing share-out that brings the lesson back to speaking. Same topic. Same vocabulary. Every domain. Every lesson. Nothing wasted.

Stage four is increasing complexity week by week. Week one is heavy lifting — complete frames, lots of modeling, visual supports everywhere. Week two is guided practice — partial frames, shared modeling. Week three is connection — students attempt higher-order functions like comparing and justifying with minimal scaffolding. Week four is application — independent production that demonstrates what students could not do four weeks earlier. Each Monday asks one question: what did my students show me last week, and what is one step harder this week?
