Not as funny as Conan, not as cute as Seth Meyers, not as smart as Colbert. But he's one of us and that counts for something. Here's Mark Scott, the original Everyday Veopene.

Hello and welcome to the Everyday veopeneur podcast, your guide through the business of voiceover. I'm Mark Scott, the original Everyday Veopreneur, back with another Summer series episode. What is the Summer series? These are quick hit episodes designed to give you one good, helpful piece of actionable, practical advice and then get you back on your way to do whatever it is that you are doing this summer. Hopefully enjoying the great outdoors, enjoying some time off, enjoying some time with family and friends, and maybe even enjoying a little bit of time around the barbecue. So let's talk about book recommendations. I am an avid reader and one of the reasons why I am an avid reader is because I am somewhat of an uneducated bum. I never went to college, I barely graduated from high school. But one of the reasons why I have been able to succeed in my business and to a degree in my life and finances and all of those types of things is because of how much I read. I love to read and I know that if there is something out there that I want to learn, I can probably learn it by reading a book. So just like some people will turn to YouTube, although I do that sometimes, primarily I'm turning to books and definitely a nonfiction guy. Now I set a goal for myself every year that I want to read at least 24 books, which works out to two books a month. And I'm actually at 14 at the time that I'm recording this episode, so I'm a little bit ahead of the game and I've read some really great stuff this year. Now some of the stuff that I have read I would say probably has little to no relevance to the voiceover industry or to you and to your business. I'm a big fan of biographies. Lately I've been on a kick reading biographies of some great political figures. Just recently finished a three volume set on Theodore Roosevelt. Finished a set on Winston Churchill. Also read one Jon Jefferson, read one on Abraham Lincoln. So I've been enjoying those types of biographies. I also enjoy reading biographies of very successful entrepreneurs. And I will say that if you want to learn how to become a successful entrepreneur yourself, there's not too many ways that are better and more efficient at doing that than studying great entrepreneurs who have come before you. And so I recently went back and re read the Elon Musk biography. I've also been working on rereading the Steve Jobs biography which I've really enjoyed. Read one recently on Nikola Tesla, which I found very fascinating. And so those are some of the types of books that I enjoy reading. But then I am also very much about the marketing, the business, the entrepreneurial, even the self help. And sometimes we get nervous of that term, self help because it sounds like a dirty word. But hey, there's a lot to be learned. So what I decided to do for this episode was take a look through some of the stuff that I've been reading in the last month or two. Some of the books that I've recently completed and I wanted to put together three. I decided I would pick out three of those books that I think would be worth you putting onto your summer reading list because I promise you that there are things that you can learn from these books that are absolutely going to help you in your life and your business. So these are my summer reading recommendations. You can read one for June, you can read one for July, and you can read one for August if you'd like. So here we go. First up, Atomic Habits by James Clear. I don't know how I did not read this book sooner, to be honest with you. I've heard about it, I was familiar with it. I've read articles with James Clear, I've listened to interviews with James Clear, but for some reason I just never read the book. And so finally picked it up and have been working my way through it. I'm about, you know, probably about 80% of the way through it at the time that I'm recording this episode. But it's so good that I knew that I needed to include it. Now as you are reading it, it's one of those things where I think some of the stuff is going to come across like, duh, like how did I not know this it's going to seem so obvious to you as you read it, but it's things that we need to be constantly reminded of. Our habits are one of the biggest keys to our success. The things that we do every day, or perhaps don't do every day are the things that are going to lead to our ultimate success or failure. And so I absolutely recommend this book. I love that it's broken up into bite sized chunks. I love that there are chapter reviews in it as well. So it gives you the ability to kind of highlight some of the key points from each chapter. But if you want to be more productive, which I think really we all want to be more productive, you gotta read this book. Here's one of my favorite quotes that I highlighted from the book. Habits are the compound interest of self improvement. The same way that money multiplies through compound interest. The effects of your habits multiply as you repeat them. They seem to make little difference on any given day, and yet the impact they can deliver over months and years can be enormous. It's so true. So there's book recommendation number one, Atomic Habits by James Clear. One of the other things that I'll mention with this one, I recently picked it up from Amazon in the Kindle store and it was one of the Kindle Daily deals. And so I got the thing for like $1.99, which is, you know, even better. Book recommendation number the Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel Now I would say that 99.9999% of us have some form of money block. I would say that the vast majority of us probably have some form of negative narratives around money. I think that for a lot of us, we're never really taught how to properly think about money. Many of us are not taught how to properly handle money. Many of us are just taught to have a really negative relationship with money. And I think that's why a lot of people spend more than they make. I think it's why people don't do things like saving for retirement. You know, I think it's why people rack up credit card debts. And these are all things that I have been guilty of in the past. And so the idea of the psychology of money is really looking at it from a psychological standpoint. It's not just about practical tips of how to do things with money. It's understanding our relationship with money and helping us to maybe identify some of those negative narratives that we have around money that may not be serving us. And I will tell you that I had some really messed up narratives around money. And I had a lot of money blocks that I did not recognize at the time. And it was probably around 2012, probably around 2012 when I started identifying those. And 2013 was the first year that I really started working to fix some of those. And by doing that, it literally changed the trajectory of my life and my business. And so this book, the Psychology of Money by Morgan Houselt is probably the sixth or seventh book that I've read on the subject of money. And but I really liked his take on it. And here's one of my favorite quotes from this More than your salary, more than the size of your house, more than the prestige of your job, control over doing what you want, when you want to, with the people you want to is the broadest lifestyle variable that makes people happy. That quote resonated with me so much because that is a big part of why I do what I do. Do I want to earn money? Of course I do. Do I want to have financial security? Of course I do. Do I want to be able to take care of my family? Of course I do. Do I want freedom and flexibility and control over my time and control over the people that I work with and control over the jobs that I take? Yep. I want all of those things too. And that's something that I have been able to do in my career. That is the kind of business that I've been able to build for myself. And not initially. I made mistakes in the beginning when I was starting out. But as I identified those things and started to get a clearer picture of what I wanted, the type of lifestyle that I wanted, the type of business that I wanted, as I started to address my relationship with money and get some of those things sorted out, I am where I want to be. I think this book should be required reading for any entrepreneur. Just to make sure that your relationship with money is right. Because if you do not have a good relationship with money, if you're feeling uncomfortable right now listening to me talk about money, that's a red flag that your relationship with money is not right. And if your relationship with money is not right, it is going to impact your ability to earn. It is going to impact your ability to save. It is going to impact your ability to invest and to grow. So you got to get those things right. So book recommendation number two is the Psychology of Money with Morgan Housel. Book recommendation number three. I feel like this is going full circle in my business. When I made the decision to pursue voiceover full time. When I made the decision actually even before that, when I made the decision to get more serious about doing voiceover. So even before I started pursuing it full time, I just. I made the decision to get more serious about voiceover, and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing at that point. I had a couple of different casting site memberships, and that was basically it. That's the only thing that I knew to do. I came across this book called Crush it by Gary Vaynerchuk. And I credit that book with sending me on my marketing journey. That is the book that is responsible for me starting down that path. That is the book that started me writing a blog. And if I had never wrote a blog, I would have never had the opportunity to turn into a coach. I would have never had the opportunity to get on stage at events like VEO Atlanta. If I did not do that blog, I would not be sitting here right now recording an episode of a podcast. Everything came back to that blog, and that blog happened because of Crush It. Well, about a month and a half, two months ago, maybe, I came across a new book from Gary Vaynerchuk called Crushing It. And this is basically a follow up to that original book. It's like 10 years later type deal. Now. All of the. Well, I shouldn't say all. Many of the technologies that Gary talked about in the original book have changed. Most of them have evolved, and things are a little bit different now. Obviously, in the last 10 years, a lot of new opportunities have been created through new platforms and social networks and things that have come online. And so Crushing it is kind of like a 2.0 version of that book. And I love it because it helps me to stay fresh. It helps me to embrace new ideas, new techniques, new technologies, new social media platforms. Because sometimes it's really easy to get comfortable with what we know. And while we are getting comfortable with what we know, we might miss a new opportunity with something else that is out there. And so reading that book, taking a lot of notes and getting new ideas for new ways that I can market my business, that I can create, influence and build my platform and grow my community, it's been really fun to go back and revisit the author, the man, the mentor that kind of got it all started for me. And here's one of my favorite quotes from Crushing it by Gary Vaynerchuk. If there's anything that this book should teach you, it's that the only thing stopping you from achieving lasting career and life happiness is you. That just makes me want to say, do the thing that's it do the thing. Because so often we are the only thing standing in our way. We have the knowledge, we have the tools, we have the skill, we have the ability, we have the desire. Sometimes we just don't have our narratives right, and that's what's standing in our way. And so sometimes the best thing that we can do for ourselves is just get out of our own way and do the thing. So Book Recommendation three Crushing it by Gary Vaynerchuk so there you go. Summer Reading List June, July, August Atomic Habits by James Clear, the Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel and Crushing it by Gary Vaynerchuk when you are sitting down to read one of these books, can you do me a favor? Can you take a picture and tag me in your Instagram story? Let me know that you're listening. One of my favorite places is to be sitting by the fire with a good book. Maybe you're going to be sitting by the fire. Maybe you're going to be sitting on the beach, by the pool, in a hammock, in your trailer while you're on summer vacation, whatever it is. But take a picture. Tag me. Let me know that you're reading. And if you've got a book recommendation that you would like to make, tag me in that too, because I'd love to hear from it because I am always on the lookout for another great book. Tag me on Instagram. Arkscott thanks so much for listening and I'll catch you on the next one.
