Kim France
Hi and welcome to Everything is Fine, a podcast for women over 40. We are your. I'm Kim France.
Jen Romolini
And I'm Jen Romolini.
Kim France
And it's looking encouraging today. We're both in a pretty good mood.
Jen Romolini
Yeah, we'll see what happens. Well, you never know.
Kim France
You never know. But I want to ask you about something because in a matter of days. Yes, it is your birthday.
Jen Romolini
Mm. 52.
Kim France
52. How are you feeling?
Jen Romolini
I feel generally great. I feel like I'm starting to Sort of age physically more rapidly. Yeah, I feel. I feel kind of emotionally good about it. I mean, I did cut my bangs too short, which is really fudgeing me all up. I really have these, like, super short bangs, and I'm like, you know when you're just like, oh, I have, like, a bad haircut, you know, you're, like, walking around.
Kim France
They're not too short. I can see why you think that, because they're shorter than they usually are. But they don't look like super short bangs.
Jen Romolini
No, they're fine. I mean, look. I mean, the larger answer is, I feel great. I got blood work back yesterday, and I do have to up my estrogen. But, like, my doctor was like, whatever you're doing, she was like, this is a near perfect blood panel. She was like, I have no suggestions. She was like, your cholesterol. Your bad cholesterol is a little high, but your good cholesterol is also so high that I'm not even worried, like, what? And I was like, I eat an avocado every day, you know, and I take fish oil. Like, so it feels like I've learned how to be in my body, even though my body is getting older and is kind of annoying, but I don't know. And, like, I also feel good that I'm very upfront about my age and my job. I think a lot of people our age are, like, hiding about, you know, like, hiding it. And I'm like, I love kind of being the old lady at work. Like, it's kind of. And they all know it. And it really, like, it works because I'm not pretending to be something I'm not, which a lot of my friends are still like, don't. Don't say how old I am. If you put a birthday post on Instagram.
Kim France
Yeah. You know, it's so interesting because I never know. I mean, you're in a position. You have the job, so you have the freedom, but for people who don't have the freedom. And I've always been an advocate of revealing your age and not. You know, the only place I ever didn't reveal my age was on the apps.
Jen Romolini
Yes. Right.
Kim France
And even then, I didn't lie about it that often.
Jen Romolini
Right, right.
Kim France
Occasionally. But anyway, if you're still out looking, I do wonder, like, how much truth there is to that.
Jen Romolini
I think there's a lot of truth to it. But I also think. I mean, like, look, I think the ageism is 100% real, especially for women, and I think that it's. I think it Is so much harder to find a job, particularly after 50.
Kim France
Yeah.
Jen Romolini
And women in their 40s don't understand that because they're in. They're so in their prime because they still look like they're in their 30s. They don't remind anybody of a mom, you know, except in a good way. Like, oh, it's a sweet mom of a young kid, you know, like, it's like, you know, and then you get into your 50s and you start to see. You start to see the different. Like, you just start to see people are starting to treat you a little differently because you're looking older and, you know, just. It's. It's just crazy that the. Like, what. What do they want us to just disappear? Like, what do they want? What does society want? Like, ideally.
Kim France
Ideally, yes. We would just drift off. We would just drift off with our broken vaginas and we would go into.
Jen Romolini
Like, some red tent situation. Except.
Kim France
Exactly.
Jen Romolini
Like a dry tent.
Kim France
Exactly.
Jen Romolini
Yeah. No. So I was thinking about how fortunate I am for that. That, like, my job is actually about what it is to get older and what shit to put on your face as you get older. So it actually just, like, works. Like, it works that I'm an older person. I'm kind of an expert in having older skin.
Kim France
Yeah, no, of course, that's luck, because.
Jen Romolini
That doesn't always happen. And if it was a different situation and a different kind of, like, content of the job, you know, I. I could be like other friends of mine who are like, I just want everybody to think I'm 45 forever.
Kim France
Yeah, yeah. There's just always been something, and I've been lucky, But I also haven't been in the workplace since I was 46 or 48, however old I was when I got fired from lucky.
Jen Romolini
Right, right.
Kim France
You know, I haven't had to confront it. I've been very fortunate.
Jen Romolini
Speaking of magazines that have nothing. That is nothing. Not what you were doing. But did you know that cellulite was. I. I wrote a story about cellulite this week. Yes. And cellulite creams have come a long way from, like, you know, when we were covering them 20 years ago. It's not just like, coffee scrubs anymore. It's like, there's now, like, body retinol, and that's something you should use for it and can help it, whatever. But I did not know that, like, cellulite was just this, like, French medical term. It was like a. It was in medical journals in France in the 19th century. It was a totally neutral term. Until 1968 when Vogue wrote about it for the first time and like brought the term to American audiences in this really like fear mongering way. Like, wow, the fat you can't get rid of. Like, you know.
Kim France
Oh no.
Jen Romolini
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And that's cause it's such a normal phenomenon. Like they. It's definitely 80% of the population gets it of women, but up to 98%, it doesn't matter if you're fat. It doesn't matter if you're thin. It has to do with genetics. It has to do, you know, whatever. It has a lot to do with hormones and loss of elasticity, but it was just this neutral thing. Until women's magazines of course were like, actually this is disgusting.
Kim France
The one fat you can never rid yourself.
Jen Romolini
Exactly. Like this is another reason to hate yourself, you know.
Kim France
Oh man.
Jen Romolini
So, so bad.
Kim France
Nobody can ever blame me for inventing that, you know. No, that was way before our time.
Jen Romolini
Geez, 1968, you know. No, we never. That wasn't cellulite. Wasn't like, I mean, I guess I'm sure that was short. It wasn't our thing, but I'm sure we wrote about like, you know. Well, do you, do you remember though, the early 2000s magazines, like you'd open a magazine and it would just have like Donatella Versace, like a red circle around her, her on the beach and a red circle around her cellulite, like.
Kim France
On us in Us magazine.
Jen Romolini
Yes, there would be like cellulite, like stalkers. And it would be like, you know, it was so disgusting and horrible. No matter. We're so fucked up. But yeah, now they're pushing peptide and retinol body creams. Although all these doctors I talked to said this will temporarily, you know, you know, it'll make it look plumped up. But really, if you, if you really want to eradicate it, one thing you can do is like micro needling this laser treatment. I'm like, Jesus Christ again. I am not spending all that money for like my left thigh that nobody sees.
Kim France
And as long as I don't have to see something like it's the back of my legs, I don't ever have to see them. You know, what the fuck? It's the same way I felt about my knees for a long time because I had heard someone we worked with at Lucky was rumored to have had a knee job.
Jen Romolini
Yes, we've discussed this. We've discussed this and I said, I am fucking. I know who it is. You didn't even tell me. But I knew. And I was like, I'm fucking sure that she did. And it's a real Hamptons thing. Like, it's a. It's a. There's, like, a name for it. It's like a special, like, lift. This little fat on the knee, like, the wrinkles.
Kim France
I mean, I never knew to hate my knees. I never knew that was the thing to do until I heard about this woman having a knee job. And then in recent years, I've. I mean, I've stopped wearing dresses that expose my knees.
Jen Romolini
Yeah. You know, that's funny because, like, getting tan is over because I can't. Like, you can't get tan anymore. You just. At this age, you just. I mean, you probably could, but physically, like, I get brown spots as soon as I go out in the sun. Like, I used to like being tan. I used to like the way it looked. I thought it was great. It was so nice. Right. But that's over. So now it's like, it's everything we've been taught to think is, like, ugly. Right. On your skin. It's like pasty, veiny, crepey. So, of course, we're not going to want to be, like, baring it all, you know, I'm like. I'm, like, going down to. I'm going down to the ankle and skirts this summer. Sometimes I'll wear a short short and be like, fudge it.
Kim France
Yeah, well, you could. You're tall and have long legs.
Jen Romolini
Yeah, but I have lots of blemishes on my legs. I mean, I remember a couple summers ago, my mom being like, wow, at your age. I just really wasn't comfortable wearing short.
Kim France
Thanks, Mom.
Jen Romolini
Thanks. Thanks a lot. I know you weren't comfortable wearing anything. I know.
Kim France
Oh, my God. Moms.
Jen Romolini
How was your week?
Kim France
My week's been pretty good. It's been a quiet week. We have kind of a busy week coming up. But this last week was pretty quiet. I think we already discussed my birthday.
Jen Romolini
Yes. Did we discuss it on here? Yes. Yes. Because it was the day. No. Did we? Maybe. Maybe we didn't. Maybe we didn't because we had guests.
Kim France
Oh, that's right. Yeah. It was my birthday. That was nice. I was in a good mood for my birthday. I feel fine about turning 61.
Jen Romolini
Good. Yes. Good. I mean, yes, your age is more significant than mine.
Kim France
Well, they're both significant.
Jen Romolini
Yeah. I guess in their own ways. Right?
Kim France
No. I just found out about a person I know who I'm not close to, but people I'm close to are close to who has A brain tumor. That's not a good one. That's not a good one. And every time I.
Jen Romolini
Never a good one.
Kim France
No, it increasingly isn't. But I was like, fuck. You know, once again, like, I'm just really fucking. I'm going to knock something because I feel really just fortunate to be here.
Jen Romolini
I. I know. Like, that's, you know, that's the thing. Like, I've been. I've been doing all the things. I have to get the. I have to get my 5.5year colonoscopy. I've been doing all the preventative. And every time I'm just like, oh, please, please, this one too. Let me pass this test. Yes. Just. Let me just make it through this with, like, some ease in my health. Because, you know, we've talked about this a lot, but it is such a privilege to be able to bitch about stupid fucking shit because your health is. If you don't. If you don't have that, then that's. That. It eclipses everything.
Kim France
It really does. It really does. It's.
Jen Romolini
It's.
Kim France
It's the only thing.
Jen Romolini
Yeah.
Kim France
Yeah, it's really the only thing.
Jen Romolini
Sorry about the person you kind of know who has a bad brain tumor. Yeah.
Kim France
It's actually sad. It's a person who I'm fond of and I'm sad about it. Someone I've known for a long time, although not very well. Can we talk about White Lotus for a minute?
Jen Romolini
Oh, yes, please. I did not watch Sundays. I have not watched Sundays yet. I'm not caught up.
Kim France
Well, I don't think that matters because nothing ever happens on any episode of the White Lotus this season.
Jen Romolini
I don't know. I like it. I'm like, in it for the vibes. I just am.
Kim France
I mean, I'm still watching it. I am buoyed by Parker Posey's performance. I don't care if her accent is too strong. I find her delightful in that role. And I think it's possible she's the bad guy.
Jen Romolini
I do too. I think that she is not who she says she is. I think that's why the person, the woman came up to her and she was like the one. One of the three. And she was like, oh, I recognize you. And she. I think for sure that. I think nothing's happening because they are laying this out very slowly. But we're getting a lot of, like, we're getting a lot of clues about where we're going. You know, it's just. It's just rolling out slow. I like, Alex is like, Alex is annoyed by the White Lotus. He's like, you know, I don't know. Is it even good? I mean, he's always a critic, you know, so everything is always like, is it even good? Like, every. Every fucking thing we ever watch. Every once in a while, I'll be like, yes, this is a great show. Like, he says that about the Pit, because he's like, the Pit is exactly what it should be. It's just we watched that whole thing because we had a. Whatever. You know, the things they give to the people who review the Pit.
Kim France
The screeners. Screeners.
Jen Romolini
We had a screener, and so we watched the Pit, and the Pit is excellent, and the Pit is exactly what it should be. And he's right. He was like. And I was like, yeah, but the scripts aren't that great. And he was like, the scripts don't have to be that great for that. It's like living with a fucking professor sometimes. And so entertainment becomes, like, not about entertaining, but about discourse, which is fine. I. On the White Lotus, I just like it to, like, lap over me. Like, I just.
Kim France
Yep.
Jen Romolini
I didn't love the first season for some reason, but me neither. The last season, I loved. And this season, I just want to watch them all.
Kim France
Yeah. I mean, I definitely want to watch it and see what occurs.
Jen Romolini
Yes.
Kim France
You know, and I love that Bucktooth girl. Oh, my God, do I love her. What's her name?
Jen Romolini
Oh, Amy. Amy. Amy Lou something.
Kim France
Yeah, something like that.
Jen Romolini
She's incredible. Goggins, I think, is like. Goggins is so intense. Walton Goggins is such an intense face. And I'm also very into him and Jennifer Coolidge's husband. Like, what's going on with them? I'm in here with them, but also, I just want to watch it. It's just, like. It reminds me of Fantasy island in a way, which is, you know.
Kim France
No, I'm sure you're not the only.
Jen Romolini
I feel like that had to have been some of the inspiration for it. And it reminds me of that. That I just. Like, Fantasy island wasn't a particularly good show. And also, I was, like, eight. But, like, it was. You know, it was enjoyable to watch these people in this environment.
Kim France
Well, it was also rich people going away and getting punished for what they want every single episode.
Jen Romolini
Yes, yes, yes. Speaking of Parker Posey, although I was gonna save this for our new segment. Should we just. Should we go into our new segment?
Kim France
Let's go into our new segment. It's so exciting.
Jen Romolini
We don't have the music for this yet, but I think we're going to, at some point, have, like, some sort of interstitial music that'll be, like, things that Don't Suck. Anyway, this is a new segment we're calling Things that Don't Suck. This week, I wanted to bring up the Parker Posey profile in New York Times Magazine. Did you read that?
Kim France
Yes. Yes.
Jen Romolini
It was so good. It was so good that I ripped it out and saved it. I haven't done that in so long.
Kim France
Isn't it nice that people are still writing profiles that are really readable?
Jen Romolini
It was just. It was. It's Amanda Hess wrote it, right? It's Amanda Hess, right? I think so. I think so.
Kim France
Yeah.
Jen Romolini
And you can tell that she is so, like, she feels about Parker Posey the way so many of. I'm assuming Amanda Hess is a Gen X Woman and feels about Parker Posey the way so many of us do. And she really gets at this sort of universal Gen X Woman arc, which is how. How hard it has been for us to show up earnestly to things, to promote things, to be a part, to. To give a shit in the way that, like, millennials, like, are just, like, going hard on things. Like, Parker Posey's always been, like, a weird fit. She's unconventional and, like. And it's just. I thought it did such a good job of describing the arc of her career and just getting at who this, like, whimsical bitch is, you know? I loved it.
Kim France
Yeah. She's awesome.
Jen Romolini
She's awesome.
Kim France
She's awesome. Okay, I'll give you one of mine.
Jen Romolini
Give me one of yours.
Kim France
Say everything. The Ione sky memoir.
Jen Romolini
On my list, too. Yes.
Kim France
Well, I. I couldn't imagine that it wouldn't be. I even halfway thought you were already reading it, too.
Jen Romolini
No, I'm almost there. I have it downloaded. I haven't started listening to it.
Kim France
It's a good one to listen to. I bet. I've gotta start listening to books. I never listen to books, and I really should.
Jen Romolini
Memoirs are good to listen to. Fiction, I find I can't keep track of anything.
Kim France
Right.
Jen Romolini
Yeah.
Kim France
Right. But I'm sure it's read by her, and it's probably great, but the book I'm really like, it's just a great. It's like a really good celebrity memoir. And her life is really juicy, and her childhood is kind of interesting. You know, her father was Donovan.
Jen Romolini
Yes, Right, right.
Kim France
Who she never met, who she didn't meet until she was, like, 19 years old.
Jen Romolini
Yeah. He didn't acknowledge her Right. Like he wanted to do the paternity test.
Kim France
Yes. He was terrible about that. Like, he acknowledged that her brother was his and he wouldn't even use her name. He just referred to her in letters and things as the girl. Oh, so terrible. So she had that. And she had this kind of, you know, beautiful model mom who would, you know, kind of, you know, had a succession of boyfriends and eventually became a pot dealer to pay the bills.
Jen Romolini
Wow. Wow.
Kim France
And, you know, they're living in some kind of like little beaten down house, but, like, you know, her brother wants to act a lot. She kind of falls into it, but he really wanted it. So, like, River Phoenix is in their house when she's like 15 years old.
Jen Romolini
Oh, my God.
Kim France
But then the other thing about this book that's interesting and maybe a criticism of it, but I don't know if it's fair to make it a criticism of it, is that her beauty is kind of an unspoken character in the book.
Jen Romolini
Okay. I mean, she was. She was just a beautiful girl and.
Kim France
Stunning.
Jen Romolini
Beautiful. Crazy beautiful.
Kim France
Yeah, crazy beautiful. And really, like, exquisite.
Jen Romolini
Yeah.
Kim France
And you know, like river, you know, River Phoenix comes to the house when she's 15 and he's a little older and he's like, meets her and says, want to go out sometime? Like, there are so many circumstances in this book where she meets a boy when she's young and immediately he says, want to go out sometime?
Jen Romolini
Oh, right, right. Yeah. She had that kind of. And she had that kind of like Brooke Shields young beauty. Like that.
Kim France
Yes.
Jen Romolini
That thing where you're 15 and you're like. It's. There's like a glow coming off of you.
Kim France
Yes. You can't. It practically is real. It's practically a real glow.
Jen Romolini
That's so hard. That's so hard to be that pretty, that young. Honestly, I think to be that pretty.
Kim France
But it also. You get a sense of how easily doors opened for her at the same time.
Jen Romolini
Right.
Kim France
You know, she, like her movie career just happened. But can I also say I have always known Anthony Katis was an asshole.
Jen Romolini
Yeah.
Kim France
Because who doesn't? Such an asshole. Like, such a mess. Such an asshole couldn't stay clean. But that wasn't it. It wasn't even the addiction stuff, although that was a drag for her. They were at a basketball game once and she looked across the crowd like a Lakers game, and sitting, I'm sure in the front row on the floor, and she says to him, oh, my God, I think I saw the guy I lost my virginity to in this crowd. He poured his drink in her lap and walked out of the stadium just.
Jen Romolini
Like a fucking megalomaniac. He's just not. He feels like, to me, like, he really thinks a lot of himself, like, of the Chili Peppers. I definitely take Flea over any of them.
Kim France
Yes, for sure.
Jen Romolini
Flea seems like the only decent one. He always seemed like a. And I could never get into their music because of that. I was always like, ew, you're fucking gross.
Kim France
Do you know that when Paul started School of Rock and it started to grow across the nation, he had a rule that none of the teachers could teach the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Jen Romolini
Oh, wow. I didn't know that. I didn't know that. My favorite anecdote from the Ione sky book, that I have not read it, but it's an anecdote I've heard, is that after. Long after say anything, after she was no longer married to the AD Rock, she finally slept with John Cusack. Right. I heard this. And then he. She let him read the memoir, and he said to her, you made it sound meh. And it wasn't. And it wasn't meh for me, but that you made it sound. You made it sound meh is such a funny line to me. Like, you made it sound meh.
Kim France
Well, it's not what you like. A beautiful Hollywood star is writing a memoir, and you're in it about how you finally slept together after years of unfinished business, you know, and you kind of expect you're going to come off well.
Jen Romolini
Right? And. And yet. And yet you don't. Like, she. I don't know what she says, but I think it's something along the lines of, like, our chemistry was more on screen.
Kim France
Oh, no, it's such a shame.
Jen Romolini
And, like, of course, because nobody could ever live up to Lloyd Dobler. There's no. There's no man who could live up to the character of Lloyd Dobler. That was just like a. That was a fiction that, you know, that was. You're absolutely irresistible.
Kim France
True.
Jen Romolini
Okay, so I have another one. I have been really into Dochi, the rapper.
Kim France
Dochi.
Jen Romolini
Dochi. D O D O E C H I I. She is a female rapper and she just won a Grammy over, you know, the last Grammys. And I have been working out to her music, and I love her. I love her.
Kim France
I remember her from the Grammys. She was wearing a Tom Ford suit.
Jen Romolini
Yes, exactly. Exactly. And she just has. Her lyrics are so funny. She's such a good rapper. The beats are good. And I've been. I've Just been listening on like nonstop to Dochi when I've been working out at the gym.
Kim France
And you've been working out still.
Jen Romolini
I've been going like twice a week.
Kim France
You know, it's not nothing.
Jen Romolini
It's not nothing. I've been going at least twice a week. I took a. I went twice last week. I lifted weights both times and did the elliptical. And then I went for like a three hour hike with my sister who was in town last weekend, which was great.
Kim France
Yeah, I bet.
Jen Romolini
It was so amazing. It was so fun. What is on my list of things that don't suck is laughing. Like, I don't laugh enough. Like, I'm just bitching at everybody in my house all the time. I'm not spending enough time with, like, people who make me laugh. And like, my sister and I were just doing nothing, like, laughing so hard I was crying just over stupid shit. Like the worst meal we've ever fed our children, you know, and then just like doubling down and being like. Yeah, and when you. When you microwave the day before pasta and try to pass it off, like we were just like dying about, like the bullshit we do. But I really had this feeling. This is kind of dark. But I were like, I was thinking, like, is there anybody on the planet, like, I would die for? Like, I would be like, no, you live. So I die, and it definitely is my kid and my sister. I think that's it. I think that's it. It's like a big sacrifice, you know?
Kim France
Yeah, no, it's the ultimate sacrifice. I'm wondering that with me, I guess either one of my brothers, because they have children.
Jen Romolini
Yes, that's it. I would. I would definitely, like, like my child or my sister, but that's it. Not my husband, not anybody else. I'd be like, so long. I'll miss you, like a lot.
Kim France
Well, in fairness, neither of our husbands would take that deal.
Jen Romolini
That's true. That's absolutely true. My husband would be like, fair. What else. What do you else do you have on your list?
Kim France
Okay, what else is on my list? I have. Okay, It's a show called Running Point.
Jen Romolini
Oh, I don't know. It.
Kim France
It's not spectacular. I'm just gonna say it. It really, truly doesn't suck, but it's kind of funny. It's a show in which Kate Hudson plays the daughter in this basketball dynasty they own. The lady waves this fictional team that's supposed to be like the Lakers or something. And her brother goes to rehab and surprisingly. Cause she's never been given a Good job in the organization. She is put in charge. So it's about this woman being in charge of this basketball team.
Jen Romolini
Okay. Okay. So kind of like what happened with the Lakers when the dad died, who was the manager of that, and she had to take over. The daughter took over. And I think she might. I don't know, she might still own the Lakers.
Kim France
I can't believe you just said that many consecutive sentences about a sports thing.
Jen Romolini
I really. And I probably am talking out of my ass. It's only because I watched that very good John C. Reilly show about the Lakers. It's the only reason I have any knowledge of anything.
Kim France
Well, maybe they took it from that. They probably did. But it's just amusing. I watched it over the weekend. I watched all the episodes. It was a very easy watch. Kate Hudson is pretty funny, actually.
Jen Romolini
Yeah, that's. I like. Look, I like Kate Hudson. I like Kate Hudson. Her. She's got a little bit of a pillow face. No offense. It's just hard to watch somebody with a face that doesn't have a lot of movement.
Kim France
And that is. That is a factor of watching the show. Yeah, it definitely is. She, you know, she definitely is. Is pumping. Pumping it up.
Jen Romolini
Pumping it up. Pumping it up. I get it. Keep pumping it up. I get it. You're like, well, you know, if I just keep pushing, kicking this can down the hill, maybe I'll never have to know.
Kim France
Yes.
Jen Romolini
Maybe it won't work for me. Okay, what's me? Oh, I am reading a great book. It's an old book. It was recommended to me by Beth Pickens. Beth Pickens gave me a list of books. She knows the novel I'm working on or the idea for the novel I'm working on. And she gave me a list of recommendations, book recommendations. And so I'm reading this book called Girls Visions and Everything by Sarah Schumann. I think it's Sarah Schumann or maybe Sarah Schuman.
Kim France
Sarah Schulman.
Jen Romolini
Shulman. Sarah Shulman. It's not Sarah Shulman. Sarah Shulman. I spelled it wrong on my list. It's about the East Village. It's about a group of lesbian friends and not friends and hookups in the east village in the 90s. It's really, really, really unexpectedly well written. Like, I started getting into it, and I was like, I don't know about this book. And then on a sentence level, I was like, this is so good. It was like she was a pretty girl in a small apartment on a hot night. Like is one of the sentences. And it was just like, it's just like, oh, that's so perfect. So I'm really, really enjoying reading this book.
Kim France
Oh, that's great.
Jen Romolini
Yeah. Yeah. I'm trying to read two books a month.
Kim France
That's a good goal.
Jen Romolini
That feels fair to me. Like, a book a week is ridiculous, but two books a month, that feels doable.
Kim France
That's totally doable. Absolutely. Small, manageable steps.
Jen Romolini
Totally, totally.
Kim France
Okay. I like. And then, in fact, wearing today, my new silk heavy. It's like a heavy silk shirt, button down from this brand Ayr. It's called the deep end shirt in heavy silk, and it's my new favorite shirt.
Jen Romolini
Okay, that is high praise because you do not bring a favorite shirt into rotation very frequently. That is.
Kim France
No, I wear the same shirts over and over.
Jen Romolini
You wear the same kind of shirt. You buy the same kind of shirt. Wow. So, okay, what, does it have a collar?
Kim France
It has a collar.
Jen Romolini
Oh, it does have a. Oh, I like a shirt. Okay. It has to have a collar for me. I can't go collarless.
Kim France
Well, I like a band collar.
Jen Romolini
I know you do. I do not. But I'm just telling you, for me in this situation. Okay, so it's got a collar and. But it's just. What is it? The weight of. It's really nice.
Kim France
The weight of. It's really nice. Like, it. And most silk shirts are really filmy.
Jen Romolini
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kim France
And this one has, you know, and this one has, like, a nice heft to it, but it's not too much. You know, you could easily tuck it in if you were a person who tucks things in. Which I'm no longer. But it's just. It's good. It comes in black. I may get it. And it comes in a couple other colors. I may get it. Like, it comes in an army green, I think would be nice. It's not cheap. It's not cheap.
Jen Romolini
Yeah, it's not cheap, but it's one. If you like it, if it fits you well, that's one of those you'll have for 10 years.
Kim France
No, I'm like, I wake up in the morning, I'm like, can I wear my silk shirt again? Has it been too soon since I wore my new silk shirt?
Jen Romolini
That's amazing. That's amazing. That's okay. That's the way I've. This is very stupid, but that's the way I've been feeling about my. My $18 Old Navy shirt, which has been. It is worn as soon as it is washed, and then it is. Then it is worn like it is. I just want to wear it all the time because it just looks good on me. It's just like when something looks good on you, you just want to wear it all the time. Take a quick break from some ads.

Jen Romolini
And we're back. Things that don't suck. I think I feel really excited about spring and summer fashion.
Kim France
I haven't been paying attention to it. What excites you?
Jen Romolini
I think there's like, there's some really good silhouettes. Like, there are some, you know, there's kind of like nice silhouettes for like a, you know, middle aged body. Like, I feel like there's some really good, like a line skirts or big like khaki skirts that are nice looking, you know, look like they have some heft to them. It's not going to be like clinging on your ass and you're like, you know, side haunches and everything else. And longer skirts. I'm really into. I need to figure out footwear. Like, I'm not a ballet flat person. I mean, almost, but like, I really like the way the skirts are looking. I feel like there's a skirt time and some, you know, there's years where you cannot buy a skirt, you know, oh, 100%. Just, you can't. And I've seen a lot of like, good elastic waist skirts with pockets like, you know, from like low end at the gap to higher end in like boutique brands. And I've just been like, oh, I'm gonna get myself a couple of these, these preppy looking cute skirts. And then I don't know what I'm gonna wear for shoes. For the first time in my life, I've been considering those weird toe shoes. You know those toe shoes, Jen?
Kim France
Which one? No, the ones with individual toes are the tabby shoes from Margaret.
Jen Romolini
The tabby shoes? Yes.
Kim France
Okay.
Jen Romolini
Okay.
Kim France
I'm not, I mean, I get the, I, I, I somehow get the appeal. I used to just find them horrible. They used to like, like scheme me out.
Jen Romolini
Same, same, same skiing. And now suddenly. This is what happens though. Sometimes with style, you're just like, oh, God, absolutely not. No, no, no. And then one day you're like, maybe, yeah.
Kim France
No, it happens with so many things. Your eye gets retrained. I remember when people started wearing skinny jeans and I was like, never.
Jen Romolini
Absolutely not. And then you were like, yes, maybe, no. I think this like kind of of preppy, crisp trend that's coming in. I feel like there's, like, a lot of good striped shirts right now. Like, striped tees.
Kim France
You're right. You're right. Yeah. I'm doing a post on striped tees tomorrow.
Jen Romolini
Right. There's, like, boxy tees that are gonna look better on older body. Like, I think there's, like, a lot happening that is kind of really good for if you're. If you don't want to have like a bare midriff, like, say, you know, like this wide, giant pants with tiny little top is not. That's not for me.
Kim France
It's not for me, that's for sure.
Jen Romolini
No. And also, I'm just. I'm too old for it. So I'm. I've been really, like. I've been like, oh, this. I'm, like, excited. There's, like, lots of stuff I want to wear, which is a really rare. Has been really rare in fashion for me, like, trendy fashion for, like, let's say the past, like three years.
Kim France
That's awesome. Yeah, that's awesome. I'm going to check it out. I probably should do something like that occasionally.
Jen Romolini
Yeah. Like, there's a whole preppy trend afoot, and I feel like there's. Feel like there's lots of. Lots of places to feel, like, age appropriate. Not that that is really a thing, but it is kind of a thing, you know? Like, it is a thing.
Kim France
I mean, you know, when you're not. You know when you put on something that you've had for a while and suddenly it's like, ooh, it's like ruffles.
Jen Romolini
Or bows or like just something that you're just like, abs no more. That's over.
Kim France
Yeah, that's. No for sure. I actually, I was gifted a cute top from Doan. You know that brand?
Jen Romolini
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kim France
Of course they sent me a top and when it came, I was like, oh, f. Because it had like a little bit of a puffy shoulder.
Jen Romolini
Yes. You really, really will just damn any puffy shoulder.
Kim France
Well, I tried it on and I was like, oh, this looks okay.
Jen Romolini
Yeah, I think that. I think puffy shoulder can still. Can still work. But there is a thing also of like, oh, this was like granny retro, and now it's just granny. It's just.
Kim France
I know that's.
Jen Romolini
That's a lot. I have to do another edit of my closet because I held on to a couple of those things that I've. That I've, like, since we moved into this house, put on and been like, no, this isn't right anymore. And it's not, it's never gonna be right. It's over. It's expired.
Kim France
Yep.
Jen Romolini
It's like bad milk. Oh, I have one more. I have one more wreck. Okay, so this is a temporary Ifix, but I have never seen anything like it in my life. Have you heard of this Peter Thomas Roth, what's it called? I Firmex Instant Firm X eye. Okay. It's a temporary eye tightening. It has like the most intense like seven step instructions which I was like, oh fuck this. I'm never doing this. I don't even, I don't care if it works or not. You have to like apply it with a makeup brush and you have to apply a very thin layer of it to dry clean skin. If you do this, it magically disappears all wrinkles under your eye and above your eye. Like any crepiness, any texture, it just, just smooths it out. It lasts, the effect lasts for about four hours. It's huh, incredible. If you do it wrong you get a white crust and is disgusting because I've done it both ways. But it actually I couldn't believe it. I did one eye and then I, and then I was like gotta put up pictures and I was like fuck that. I'm not like putting up this picture of like my, this crazy picture of my eye. But I could tell like I couldn't believe it. There was no, there was no bag, no fine lines, no nothing. It was just like a smooth surface. It just works almost as if it's like a piece of tape that just like pulls the eye across and doesn't look unnatural, doesn't look anything you could put makeup on top of. Absolutely, absolutely works. It's a little bit fiddly and a little bit of a pain in the ass to put on at first but because I've been seeing all the TikTok videos of people being like look, it's a miracle. And I was like, like I, you're not fooling me.
Kim France
But it really was kind of a miracle.
Jen Romolini
It was really kind of a miracle. So if you're, people ask me all the time like this isn't going to like condition the skin around your eye. It's not going to long term like help like a retinoid or a vitamin C or you know, a good eye cream with peptides is going to. But if you just want something like you're going out and you just want your under eye area to look like fresh and tight, it 100% works amazing. I know, I can't believe it. I was in shock.
Kim France
That's amazing. Well, I have something I'm excited about.
Jen Romolini
Tell me.
Kim France
I think I've talked on this show. I know I've talked to you about the movie An Unmarried Woman.
Jen Romolini
Yes, yes, we've talked about it a lot. Yes.
Kim France
Which I think came out in 78 and I was reading on substack. Your friend Glynis McNichols.
Jen Romolini
Yep.
Kim France
Glynis McNichols wrote a piece about An Unmarried Woman in which she said that it was screening at the Metrograph down on the Lower east side and she had gone to see it and I was like, I missed it. That sucks. But it's playing next week. No, this week it's playing. I'm going to see it Thursday night.
Jen Romolini
Oh, my God. That's amazing. I love that. I love. I know.
Kim France
I'm so excited.
Jen Romolini
God, I haven't seen that movie since it was like playing on HBO in the 80s or something, you know, Like I. I haven't seen it. I haven't seen it in so long. But I've such fond memories of it.
Kim France
It made such a big impression on me at the time. I think Joe Clayberg reminded me a lot of my mom who was going through her 70s journey at the time.
Jen Romolini
Yeah. So, no, it's great. I remember it too. It had a real feeling of freedom in it. And one of the first times you'd seen middle aged freedom like that.
Kim France
Yeah. Or middle aged sex too.
Jen Romolini
Yeah, or middle aged sex. Yeah, absolutely. What else is on your list? Was that the end of your list?
Kim France
Well, I have a question.
Jen Romolini
Oh, go ahead.
Kim France
What do you eat for breakfast?
Jen Romolini
I eat basically the same breakfast every morning. I have a cup of green or black tea, smoked salmon on Paleo bread with avocado or eggs and avocado and toast.
Kim France
Because this, this thing where eggs. There's this egg shortage and they're very expensive. It's been hard to get eggs.
Jen Romolini
It's horrible.
Kim France
I'm like, what do I eat for breakfast?
Jen Romolini
It's horrible.
Kim France
Like, I can't eat. I can't eat sweet things for breakfast. I never want sweet in the morning. I want savory. So what the fuck is there to eat if you don't have eggs? That's protein.
Jen Romolini
It's smoked salmon. Or if I'm just having toast and I'm not doing anything else. I usually have avocado with my toast every morning because of this cholesterol situation. I have bone broth. Bone broth has a lot of. Bone broth, has a lot of protein in it. It's like 12 grams or something just in a cup.
Kim France
Hmm. So, Gwyneth.
Jen Romolini
I know it's disgusting. Like, I'm not proud of this. Like, I really shouldn't be talking about it in public. Like, my sister saw, like, the brodo broth packets, and she was like, what the fuck is this? And I was like, oh, it's bone. It's. It's my bone broth subscription. Subscription to bone Broth. Like, it's so embarrassing. And she was like, and you have a cup? And I was like, yes, they gave me a cup.
Kim France
They gave you a cup because you ordered.
Jen Romolini
They gave me a mug, yes. Because I'm like, such a good brodo broth customer.
Kim France
I use brodo broth, but I use it for cooking.
Jen Romolini
If you get. They have flavors. Like, I drink the. I drink the ginger turmeric one. They have flavors, and then I squeeze a little lemon in and I put collagen powder in it. And that's one of my. One of my breakfasts. But other than that, everything else makes me feel spacey. Like, I can't have, like, oats or anything. Like, all of that just makes me feel, like, carby and spacey.
Kim France
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's not how I want to feel in the morning.
Jen Romolini
No. I mean, I was thinking for a while, like, that I would start making, like. And I think I did this one week, and it was amazing. I made, like. I made, like, turkey sausage, and we had turkey sausage every morning for breakfast. But, like, I'm not fucking making my own sausage. Like, I'm kind of amazed you did. I did once. And Alex, like, this is great. And I was like, this is great. Look at us. We're having so much protein. Have you seen some of these stupid fucking influencers who are eating, like, ground beef with milk as if it's a cereal?
Kim France
No, fuck that.
Jen Romolini
Fuck that. Like, I'm not that much of a protein head. Like, sorry, but it has to be. It has. But it can't be, like, disgusting.
Kim France
No, no, the. Like, I think there are people who, like, go for the disgusting.
Jen Romolini
Oh, God. I've seen. I have seen so many horrors with ground beef on social media. I don't know what algo I'm in, but, like, they're just like, look at. You know, get ready with me. Look at my breakfast. And I'm like, no, I'd rather all my bones break and I fall over. Then like, eat that with a bowl with, like, a spoon in milk and sugar on top of it. Ugh.
Kim France
No, that's That's. I just. That doesn't even feel real.
Jen Romolini
Or Monk fruit sweetener, whatever they're doing. Um, no, it doesn't feel real. It feels disgusting. Like a weird science experiment. No, eggs are. Eggs are a nightmare to find. There's. Nobody has eggs.
Kim France
Nobody has eggs. You need eggs for cooking. Like, you need eggs.
Jen Romolini
So many things.
Kim France
You know, I usually go through a dozen eggs pretty quickly, and now, like, no eggs.
Jen Romolini
I know. It's really been a problem. And it's also just like. I mean, I know we're trying to be upbeat, but, like, it's so depressing. The whole bird flu thing is so depressing. The slaughter of all of these animals, the trauma that the people who. My sister, who's a scientist, she works in urban ecology, and she also knows people who do a lot of research around factory farms. And, you know, the trauma. The trauma of people working in factory farms right now. Like, the people. What. What they're processing. Like, the. Because when you're killing that many animals, like, you really go through something. There's, like, real PTSD from that. Like, it's. Yeah, it's. It's really bad. I don't know what we're gonna do. It doesn't. It doesn't seem like a thing that this administration gives a fuck about, but seems like they should.
Kim France
Might. Yeah.
Jen Romolini
I mean, wasn't that the whole thing about the election? Like, I'm going to bring egg prices down? Didn't happen. Nothing.
Kim France
That was exactly what he said.
Jen Romolini
Everyone was like, I don't give a shit about anything else. I just want these egg prices to come down. Who cares if it's a decent fascist and can't even do that? Motherfucker, no. Oh, speaking of cursing, I just want to thank everyone because I think I've become. I somehow have become like a poster child, a hero for the word cunt. Everyone is sending me every meme that they find amazing. It's just like my inboxes are flooded with, have you seen this cunt thing? It's so funny. I've been laughing about it so, so hard. Like, it's just from the far reaches of the Internet. Anytime the word cunt is mentioned, somebody, it's like they have an alert and they send it to me. And I have. I've been laughing and laughing about it so hard.
Kim France
That is hilarious. Maybe I should have gotten you the bellafroid hello, cunty trinket tray for your birthday.
Jen Romolini
Oh, my God. Then we'd be cunty twins. But, yeah, I don't know. I don't know. Should we go to listener questions?
Kim France
We should. Yeah. Why not?
Jen Romolini
Yeah. We have a couple more minutes. I'm sorry about your egg dilemma. That does.
Kim France
Well, it's just. It has really fucked up breakfast for me.
Jen Romolini
Yeah, I mean, look, you could go to turkey bacon. So boring.
Kim France
Turkey bacon, Such a sad.
Jen Romolini
I know.
Kim France
So fucking boring. That's supposed to be a hole.
Jen Romolini
No, it's not. It's not. It's not a hole. It's not a hole. It's nothing. Okay, we have a question. This is a springtime this or that quiz. Okay, you ready?
Kim France
Okay, I'm ready.
Jen Romolini
Tulips or daffodils?
Kim France
Daffodils.
Jen Romolini
Both for me. Pistachio green or powder pink?
Kim France
Pistachio green.
Jen Romolini
Can I say in combination, chicks or bunnies? Chicks, bunnies, self tan or. Nah, man.
Kim France
I will. In the summer, occasionally I will get it together to put some self tanner on my legs, but that's about the extent of it.
Jen Romolini
Same. But I always fuck it up and I always have streaks no matter what I do. And I'm not good at it, but I have done it. Brunch or picnic?
Kim France
I hate brunch.
Jen Romolini
You don't hate a picnic.
Kim France
Well, did I say that I'm having a hard time? I mean, a picnic, it just feels like a schlep.
Jen Romolini
It's just at this age, somebody invited me to a picnic. Somebody I know is dating like a much younger person as they do as older men do, and was like, why don't we go to a picnic with all of these 22 year olds? And I was like, yeah, no. Like no fucking way. I'm not sitting on the ground. Like it's like a totally different age. No, no picnic for me. Why do you hate brunch?
Kim France
Because you often have to wait in line for it.
Jen Romolini
Yeah, that's true.
Kim France
And I just. If I can go to a place and sit down immediately and order brunch. Also, I think restaurants are getting too creative with their brunch menus.
Jen Romolini
Yes, yes, yes.
Kim France
You know, just give me, give me some eggs. Give me an omelet. Don't make it in like, you know, with a turmeric compote or something.
Jen Romolini
Also because of how old I am. I don't want to wait. I'm not waiting that long to eat my first meal. Like I like, I'm not waiting until like 11 or noon. Like I'm, I'm up. I have to eat by 9:00am at latest.
Kim France
Yeah.
Jen Romolini
And then glossy lip or matte? Lip.
Kim France
Matte. I am matte. I Like matte.
Jen Romolini
I like matte too. Glossy lips. Oh my God. I got sent Lisa Rinna's insane lip gloss. Like this stuff that makes your lips like. I'm going to say the most disgusting thing, but kind of look like an asshole. Like the most pearly. It's so horrible. I was like, this is not for me. Okay. Marshmallow Peeps. Tasty Spring confection. Or just wrong?
Kim France
I'll eat a peep.
Jen Romolini
I won't eat a peep. What is your. My favorite. What's your favorite Easter candy?
Kim France
Well, I don't know from Easter candy.
Jen Romolini
Oh, that's right. I know. I'm sorry, you're right.
Kim France
I love that you asked.
Jen Romolini
I'm a.
Kim France
What is yours?
Jen Romolini
I'm a peanut butter chocolate peanut butter egg. Cadbury creme eggs. You know, they're disgusting.
Kim France
Yeah, they really are.
Jen Romolini
And jelly beans, whatever. Like fine. But I really, I'd like a chocolate peanut butter egg is where I'm at.
Kim France
Yep. Yeah. Well, chocolate peanut butter is.
Jen Romolini
Anytime.
Kim France
It's hard to beat.
Jen Romolini
Backpack or roller suitcase for a two week trip to Europe? Carry on.
Kim France
Only roller suitcase for sure.
Jen Romolini
That's what I think. I mean my. Like under the seat bag is always a backpack. So it's actually both for me. But I wouldn't carry. I wouldn't get a really good rolly that'll wheel on anything. Yep, that's what I think. You don't want. You want to be carrying that or up and down. You want to be schlepping that? No, this one's for you. Will you be taking up bird watching this spring?
Kim France
Now I'm wondering, did I mention bird watching? I must have.
Jen Romolini
I think we've been looking for a hobby for you for a while.
Kim France
It's been a while. It's true. I don't even remember. I do like spotting birds. Like, I get excited when I see birds. Like in the quote unquote wild of my backyard here in Brooklyn. Not my backyard.
Jen Romolini
It's exciting though. I agree.
Kim France
When you see a pretty bird that has pretty colors that you know, usually. Especially because most of the birds here are pigeons and yes, yes.
Jen Romolini
You see like a cardinal, it's like you're just like, whoa, how'd this even happen?
Kim France
Yeah. Yeah. It's the only thing I got from my ex husband that I'm fond of is like an interest in birds.
Jen Romolini
Wow, that's. I've never heard you say a positive thing about him. I mean, and no shade like, I've never said a positive thing about my ex husband either. Like.
Kim France
No, it's the only. It's the only thing.
Jen Romolini
Well, good. I mean, there's one thing. Okay, What's a good spring coat that's not a trench but will still cover my butt? My houndstooth and other wool coats feel a bit blah at this point in the season.
Kim France
I like a Mac.
Jen Romolini
What's a Mac?
Kim France
You know, a Mac coat. M, A C. It's like a Macintosh. It's a. It's a. So it's. It's a trench. But it doesn't have, or at least many don't have all the little details of a trench because I think, like, they can get a little fussy. Like the epaulettes on the shoulder and the. And the tie thing. Just like a straight coat.
Jen Romolini
Yes, Yes. I was gonna say a chore. A chore coat, I think often are, like, barn jacket, chore coat, hybrid. I think there are a lot of good ones this season. You put up one. Oh, my God. You put up that leopard one. I have had my eye on that coat. That is.
Kim France
Oh, it's so cute.
Jen Romolini
Is such a good coat. It's. What is it? Ganny Gani. Yeah.
Kim France
However you say.
Jen Romolini
However you say it. It's. It's so good. I just bought a couple of pieces from that brand on the outnet that I'm excited to get. I. I like those little coats, though. Those little, like, for spring even. I like a little, like, barn jacket or chore coat. I think they can be really cute.
Kim France
Yep. I totally agree.
Jen Romolini
Oh, my God. It's another question about perfume. Everybody always asks us. Let's. Let's talk about it. Have I missed it, or do you never talk about perfume? This is the most asked question we ever get. I so enjoy wearing perfumes just for myself at home. Any favorites? Go ahead, tell your favorite.
Kim France
I have before, so recently.
Jen Romolini
Go ahead, tell.
Kim France
Portrait of a Lady by Frederick Maui. That is my perfume. I don't wear the perfume. I wear the hair and body oil because I find perfume to be too fumey.
Jen Romolini
Same with me. I only wear body oil, and I wear Maison Louis. I think it's number four. It's a candle scent that I really like, and they also have it as a perfume oil. It really is. It's so funny that people are so interested in that as a question.
Kim France
Well, I should suggest if you're interested in perfumes, my friend Christina Loff has an excellent substack called the Dry Down Diaries. It's about perfume every week.
Jen Romolini
Oh, that is a really good substack. That's a really? That's a really good one. All right, last question of the day. How early is too early to wear sandals in the spring? It hit 66 in New York yesterday, and I got the urge to break out the old burks, mostly because I feel like most of my flowy outfits look better with sandals than my winter boots. Boots. Thanks.
Kim France
Whenever it's warm enough, just put them on.
Jen Romolini
I agree. Right? Like, I agree. I agree. Whenever.
Kim France
Never too early.
Jen Romolini
Never too early. But also, I kind of like, and I feel like something that's happening right now is a lot of, like, socks, sandals. Like, I know it's not for everybody, and I don't want to do it with burks necessarily, but I do think there's, like, a sock, sandals, socks, socks, and flats thing happening. And I don't. You have to get the proportions right, but I think it looks really cute on a lot of people. Yep, I think that's it.
Kim France
Well, then, there we go.
Jen Romolini
I think that's all the questions we got. And I think that. I think it's an hour. It's an hour.
Kim France
It's pretty much an hour. We did it once again.
Jen Romolini
50, 54 minutes. Yes, that's it. So here I go. I'm wrapping up. Thanks for listening to Everything is Fine. We're your hosts. I'm Jen Romolini.
