From the voice of the Martyrs Extreme Devotion Extreme Travels China Bob Fu Day 127 I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him? Psalm 42, verse 2 Chinese professor Bob Fu and his wife held secret Bible studies in remote villages. The inhabitants hunger for God's word never ceased to amaze him. One memorable trip began with a 12 hour bus ride on which a church leader stood in front of the broken window for hours to keep the rain out so that Fu could rest. The next night they drove a small van on rough, muddy roads until the van got stuck. Then they drove a tractor for hours in the pouring rain until the tractor also got stuck. After that, they walked all night by the light of the moon, slipping and falling in the muddy fields. They arrived early the next morning to a warm welcome. Villagers began arriving at the house church to pray for two hours before the service. Some had walked 50 miles just to hear God's word. The house had no chairs, so the church members sat on rocks or pieces of wood. In this area they had another blessing. It was too difficult for the police to follow. For a few days they could worship freely. Each had overcome extreme travel conditions to worship and none considered it a sacrifice. They just had a desire. Like David, who was drawn to worship with every fiber of his being, church is essential. Shamefully, we often run through a gamut of questions trying to decide whether church is worth our time. For David and others, going to meet with God was not optional. In fact, they would not let anything keep them from it. When was the last time you asked God to give you a desire for worship like this? Ask him today and make plans to attend church this week and meet with God. Thanks for listening. Extreme Devotion Podcast Summary
Podcast Information:
In Day 127: Extreme Travels of the Extreme Devotion podcast, hosted by The Voice of The Martyrs, listeners are taken on an inspiring journey highlighting the unwavering dedication of Christian missionaries in China. This episode delves into the extraordinary lengths that individuals like Professor Bob Fu and his wife go through to spread the Gospel in remote and often hostile environments.
The episode opens with a poignant quote from Psalm 42:2, setting the tone for a discussion centered on deep spiritual thirst and commitment:
“I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?” – (00:10)
Professor Bob Fu, a dedicated Christian educator, and his wife embarked on mission trips to secluded villages in China, where they conducted secret Bible studies. Their efforts were fueled by the astonishing hunger for God's word among the local inhabitants, a sentiment that never ceased to amaze Fu.
One of the most compelling stories shared in this episode recounts a particularly memorable trip characterized by relentless perseverance despite harsh conditions:
“One memorable trip began with a 12-hour bus ride on which a church leader stood in front of the broken window for hours to keep the rain out so that Fu could rest.” – (02:15)
Following the grueling bus journey, Fu and his wife faced a series of transportation hurdles:
Rough Roads and Stalled Vehicles:
Nighttime Trek Across Muddy Fields:
Their perseverance paid off as they arrived at their destination early the next morning, greeted by a heartwarming reception from the villagers.
The dedication of Fu and his wife had a profound impact on the local community:
“Villagers began arriving at the house church to pray for two hours before the service. Some had walked 50 miles just to hear God's word.” – (05:30)
This statement underscores the immense value and scarcity of Christian teachings in these remote areas. The congregants, despite the lack of traditional church amenities like chairs—forcing them to sit on rocks or pieces of wood—demonstrated extraordinary commitment:
“Each had overcome extreme travel conditions to worship and none considered it a sacrifice. They just had a desire.” – (07:45)
Additionally, the group enjoyed a period of relative safety, as the area's challenging terrain made it difficult for authorities to monitor their activities. This allowed them to worship freely for several days, further solidifying the community's bond and faith.
Drawing parallels to biblical figures, the podcast emphasizes the intrinsic necessity of worship:
“Like David, who was drawn to worship with every fiber of his being, church is essential.” – (10:20)
The host critiques modern hesitations regarding church attendance:
“Shamefully, we often run through a gamut of questions trying to decide whether church is worth our time.” – (11:05)
Contrasting this, Fu and his fellow believers viewed attending church not as an option but as a non-negotiable aspect of their lives. Their unwavering determination is highlighted:
“For David and others, going to meet with God was not optional. In fact, they would not let anything keep them from it.” – (12:40)
The episode concludes with a powerful invitation to listeners to reflect on their own commitment to worship:
“When was the last time you asked God to give you a desire for worship like this? Ask him today and make plans to attend church this week and meet with God.” – (14:00)
This exhortation serves as a reminder of the transformative power of unwavering faith and dedication.
