That show just has so much charm and it's a real feel good jam.

And then it was quiet and she goes, daddy, Dada, can I tell you something about bad words? And I said, yeah, what is it? And she said, when I said unbuckle, I was gonna say fuckle, but then I stopped myself. Great.

And a really, really nice use of the loophole there to get one credit for the, you know. Mm. Then Axel's. We were. We were at a beach and it was me and Axel and this friend of ours, older gentleman, he was like, hey, Axel. We were at their beach and he's like, hey, if you go to the end of that dock, there's a slide where you can go right into the water. Would you like to do that? And Axel just kind of looked down, he goes, no, I think I'm just gonna eat some ice cream and skedaddle. And I was like, skedaddle? Where?

Where's he getting skedaddle from?

[Seth Meyers]

I have no idea. And by the way, then you're like, where'd you learn skedaddle? He's like, huh? Yeah. Great, great. That was fantastic. Ash, though, may be the kill shot. I'm driving with my father in law in shotgun, and Ash in the back. And Tom, my father in law, who's gonna get a lot of play in this episode cause he's dear friends of Will Forte. Tom says, hey Ash, did I ever tell you about the time me and my friend bought a pet turtle? And Ash says, yeah, you've told me, but I'm trying to fall asleep. So tell it again. So good. So good.

And then we did this charity event that I, I think I told you about. Charity event for this great organization of Martha's Vineyard called Harbor Homes. Helping people, you know, with housing insecurity. And they're, you know, great group of people. And it was a bowling charity and I brought Ash with me and basically the, the plan was I was going to bowl a frame with 10 different groups of people. And I said, ash and I, we challenge anybody here and we'll give an extra hundred bucks to the charity for everybody who can beat us. Best score wins. Me and Ash against your two best bowlers. And Ash, who's never bowled a strike before, had two strikes. Oh, wow.

[Pashi Sufi]

With bumpers or just straight?

[Seth Meyers]

No bumpers. He even said, are there bumpers? And I said, tonight's not the nights for bumpers. Tonight's the night for us to like man up and, and, and see what we could do. And he was so proud of himself.

Also he had this. I was very glad he said this as well because I was like, so anytime the other people win, we'll give 100 bucks to Harbor Homes. And he goes, but we're going to give it all. He goes, we're going to give it all at the end.

And I was like, yeah, yeah, we're going to give it all at the end. That's nice. And I was like, I like that. He didn't think he was going to like actually like go home with a profit.

Oh, he likes his money. But also like we, we walked out, he's like, we got to do more charitable stuff. I'm like, it's not. But we had a, we had a great time. And, and my, my son, a lot of people that we just mentioned, my son, my father in law, my other son, my daughter, they all are spending time with our, our guest today, Will Forte.

Because Will Forte is very close with my family to the point that he is currently with them even though I'm in New York City.

You've. So you have befriended people now I love this and I have no issue with this, but you have really, you've befriended my father in law. He is genuinely a friend of yours.

Oh yeah, he's a bud. So last night we got in yesterday and then we went to the beach with everybody and then had a little pizza dinner. Last night it was tons of kids running around. Wig is over. Like it's, it's a, it's a full. We played football out on the backyard.

Yep.

And then everyone went to bed and, and I went down to Tom's music room. Your. Your father in law. And we, he, we just watched videos for a long time. He was, it was very cute. I came down, he was watching a closer look.

Oh, that's nice.

Yeah. And then we started chatting and then I was asking him about the stuff he loves music wise. Cause he's a musician and just an awesome dude. And he was telling me about George Strait and I really had only heard of George Strait. So he just showed me a bunch of his favorite George Strait music videos. And then we started watching Alan Jackson and then we watched some Toby Keith and just the Highwayman. It just like we hours and hours down there.

My father in law watches YouTube more than anyone I know. Like he like watches YouTube like the way we used to watch network television. Like sometimes I feel like he just like whatever the next thing is, he'll just watch that.

Yes.

And, and again, you know, algorithm recommended. But he said to Alexi and I the other day, I can't remember what the band was but it was something like, have you guys seen the documentary on the band Chicago? And I was like, the only way I would have seen that is if I walked in on you sleeping and it was on.

I didn't catch any ads last night. It didn't seem like there were any ads.

I mean again, like you're on a family trip right now and you're visiting my family and, and how's it going? I mean, you're having a great time. They. They were pretty. I mean, they don't have a, they don't have a dog in this race. They just seem to.

Are you like dropping balls to give the advantage to the kids? Are you sort of losing on purpose?

No, I try very hard. But you know, this is a game of, you know, the age range. You know, you got a couple six year olds playing up to like, you know, people who are, you know, I don't know, high 60s. What, what's Thomas out there? What's, what's.

He's more than high 60s.

He's high. Oh, really?

Yeah, he's. I think he's crossed into the 60s.

He's ageless. He knows. No, he knows.

He is ageless. Yeah. My father in law is kind of ageless.

He's like the coolest dude.

He is the coolest dude. The reason he's so happy, I mean, my father in law is a big fan of mine. I do not feel like I receive a ton of support from my father in law, and not in a million years would I end up in his basement watching Alan Jackson YouTube videos. And he knows that. And so in a way, you're doing me a huge service by showing up and being the son in law. I'm. I'm happy that at least he's getting the son in law he wanted via knowing me. So I'm like, all right, I. I took care of you, dog. I took care of you.

The funniest thing. Now tell me, do you think this is crazy? Because, you know, they're. All the wives are like, you didn't even text Seth to. To let him know. And I'm like, I knew I was gonna see him. I just thought that he. I thought you knew. And also, my wife has been gone for two weeks. She was in New York. And so I was on solo dad duty, so I'm just scrambling to, like, you know, take care of the kids. And so I just thought, oh, I'll see him. Yeah.

Yeah. No, I mean, I think looking back, the fact that you visited my family without giving me a heads up, I mean, that's something to. I'd reflect back on that a little.

I thought you were in on these conversations.

Like, I hear, like, I cannot tell you how out on conversation. Half of the things I know about my family are because I overheard them.

Yeah. Friendship. I say to Alexia. I'm like, when was the last. Alexi. I'm like, when was the last time you turned and faced me before you said something? Cause she's like, you. You. I don't just get to, like, hear you and your sister are in a tv, like a talk radio station I have on, and I'm, like, listening to. To get my news. But I'm glad you're there. How. How do your girls. You guys have been traveling a lot for work.

Yes.

How. First of all, how are your girls getting on with my boys on this family trip so far?

[Will Forte]

They love your boys. And they. The girls have been a little off their sleep cycle because we're west Coasters, so we're on the east coast. And so it was really cute when we. We woke up a little late today and your kids came over. I think Addie and Axel came over because they wanted to play with. With our girls, but they were still asleep, so Tom wouldn't let them go up and wake them up. They really wanted to wake them up. So that's. It's cute. And they. And that was the other fun thing is we. It felt like we packed so much in yesterday. I didn't. We didn't even get to the house till like one o'. Clock. We went to the beach, we came back and had a swim party. We played football, we did pizza. We. It was like, so much stuff going on. And your dad was, you know, teaching my daughter how to swim. It was like he. Excuse me, your dad. Father in law.

My dad, yeah. Larry Myers. You do not want Larry Myers teaching your kid how to swim.

I want to talk about the same trips. I want to talk about the exact same trips.

Well, I listened to your episode this morning in preparation for this, and you really, like, you went through a lot of trips, so I will be impressed if you can. If you can add to this. But I, in particular, at the very end of the episode, when Seth asked you about the Grand Canyon, you were like, oh, yeah, I did a, like, canoe trip through the grand canyon with like, 20 family members.

[Will Forte]

Yes.

[Pashi Sufi]

And so I particularly wanted to ask you about that trip because I feel like we only scratched the surface on that. So what. What was that? When was that? How old were you?

[Will Forte]

God, I feel like I would have been about 15 or 16. That was my dad's side of the family. And I'll tell you, the main thing I remember about that was what we had to do with our poops. Like, it was like, you know, we

[Seth Meyers]

expect nothing less from you.

[Will Forte]

You know, you had to go in and dig holes. And I don't even remember that much about that, but it was beautiful. And then the holes, kind of the holes were. I mean, it's like it becomes a part of the. That's how these canyons were built, with millions and millions of years of people digging their holes for their poops.

[Seth Meyers]

I had no idea the two were connected. That's fascinating. Oh, wow. Did you have. Was it a trip that you liked? Were you excited to go when you heard you were gonna go to the Grand Canyon?

[Will Forte]

Oh, yeah. I loved it. I loved it. And it's. And at the same time, I feel like I almost haven't been there I think it was like the very southern part of the canyon, and it's just such a huge thing that I really want to go out and check out other aspects of the canyon because I think it's really different in a bunch of places. Have you ever been? I went several years ago. The structure that's built, that hangs out. It's like a walkway that you go out. That's.

Like the Sky Skywalker.

[Seth Meyers]

Yeah, some.

Yeah. I have not been to that.

And that was like a fully different experience where you're just terrified of the. Of the drop. But, yeah.

Yeah.

[Will Forte]

I mean, the Grand Canyon. What an insane place. The very. The coolest thing this trip was my dad's side of the family, which they're east coast, and my mom's side of the family is, for the most part, west coast, so. So my dad's side of the family we just wouldn't spend as much time with, so that it was a really cool experience. And then the last couple of years, and we just did this a couple of years ago, we have, like, a special forte family trip that's now become an annual thing. And we just got back, like, I don't know, 10 days ago from Colorado. We went to Shadow Mountain Lake.

[Seth Meyers]

And this is dad's side.

[Will Forte]

This is dad's side. So it's like that same group as the Colorado river rafting thing. Everybody's a lot older. And now it's, you know, it was so fun. Saw a bear.

[Pashi Sufi]

Really?

[Will Forte]

Almost ran into a bear. Like, tell us.

[Seth Meyers]

What? Tell us. All right. So you see a bear. What does that even mean when you see a bear?

[Will Forte]

Well, this was. I wasn't expecting. We were all coming out at dinner. I was walking with my kids to the car. The car was kind of a ways away, probably like 75 yards away. So we realized that my kids left their shoes back in the house. So I said, okay, hang on, I'm going to go back up to the house. So I'm searching around the house for about five minutes, and then I came out all alone in the pitch dark, and there is a bear right there within 10ft of me.

[Pashi Sufi]

Didn't.

[Will Forte]

Didn't even acknowledge me. Just kind of walked by and it's. You don't. It wasn't necessarily scary. It was just so. It happened so quickly. I was just like, I guess I have to go inside. So I ran inside and I told everybody who was out on the back porch. I'm like, there's a big bear who's kind of heading in this direction. You Know, I don't know how hungry he is. They all got up and actually everybody's inclination was to, to kind of try to see where the bear was, like to go towards where the bear would be presumably walking. And that was. But it was. And then later two of the kids who were like these high school aged kids went out and kind of tracked him down and he was just going through the neighbor's garbage, hanging around.

[Seth Meyers]

Did the high schoolers go track them down with permission or were they like, let's go find that bear, let's not tell anybody, we're gonna go find the bear.

[Will Forte]

They had permission. And I think their parents know a lot about wildlife and just. But I think these kids also know a lot about wildlife. So they were, they just sent me a picture, so I don't know how they went about it, but yeah, I think they did have permission.

[Seth Meyers]

How many, how many Fortes show up for the Forte family reunion in Colorado?

[Will Forte]

This was 36 people.

[Seth Meyers]

Wow.

[Will Forte]

Yeah.

[Seth Meyers]

And how. Were there other. Were there kids near your kids ages or were they sort of the youngest of the bunch?

[Will Forte]

A ton of kids their age. I mean, it was. I'm an old dad, but then there were a lot of, you know, so mainly the kids that, that were hanging out with my kids were grandkids instead of just kids. But it was, it was great. It was kind of like the first year where I didn't have to every second be looking around. So it was really, really fun.

[Pashi Sufi]

And do you have a bunch of cabins or like a couple houses? Where are you guys all staying?

[Will Forte]

We had 336, three separate big houses that we just each crammed in, like 12 people to each house. Go around to a different house for, for dinners. It's, it's. By the way, that experience was very similar to this experience here where, you know, just a bunch of kids running around or kids are having a blast and they get exhausted and you can. They just go right to bed when you, you put them to sleep. It's great.

[Seth Meyers]

That's a very exciting. I, I feel like this is the. That is definitely the first summer for me as well where I realized, what is this feeling I'm having? And then I realize, oh, I haven't been fully engaged with my children every second of every minute of every hour of every day.

[Pashi Sufi]

Like they're just kind of off kill themselves when they're so young and helpless.

[Seth Meyers]

Yeah. Once they have autonomy, kind of like, oh, I haven't been stressed out for the last 20 minutes. And it's like, oh, Right. Because they're over there and I know they're fine.

[Pashi Sufi]

Yeah.

[Seth Meyers]

And it's just the best feeling in the world. Did your girls play football yesterday? Were they involved or were they too little?

[Will Forte]

They did not play football. What were they doing? All the kids were. We just kept hearing different shrieks. And then you'd go and figure out what that shriek was and you couldn't like, which, who's the shrieker? What are they shrieking about? And usually it was just like, just like people were shrieking because there were a bunch of kids around. Things got very exciting.

[Pashi Sufi]

The shriek can be joy or pain or terror. And you know, you don't really know from the, from the sound of it,

[Seth Meyers]

you usually know it's not joy.

[Will Forte]

Okay.

[Seth Meyers]

Yeah, I would say that's the way. But it is funny how you cannot discern your child's shriek from another child shriek. Certainly, maybe, maybe my dad ears and maybe your dad ears are the same. But I will say that when I hear a kid yell, I'm like, that could. That's deaf. Mine. And then I sometimes check and like, Alexi is not the least bit bothered by it.

[Will Forte]

Yeah, I, I think that my, my youngest, Cecilia, is usually like, whenever I hear a shriek, I'm like, oh, that's Cecilia. I'm pretty sure that's her. But, but they're having a blast. They're like shrieks of joy.

They had a blast. You know I'm so it'll be interesting to see as the years go on if they even realize they were in such a far away place that's you know because they, you know they heard different accents but I have a brother in law who's Australian so she's used to hearing Australian accents in California. So so it, it'll be they've because of work I've had to. My, my older one's been to Ireland and to Italy into Australia. Like she's been to way more places than I ever was when I was, you know, until I was in my twenties. So. So I, I don't know how much of it she'll. She'll remember but, but spent a lot of money on her.

[Pashi Sufi]

She's got the passport stamps to prove it.

[Will Forte]

Yes.

[Seth Meyers]

Did you. I mean for of you know, look again we have a lot of friends who are very busy from our era at the show. Right. They're all working a lot. You seem to be as far as like the jobs you've had, you seem to be the most world traveler of all of us and do you love it or has it been a burden? Because again every place you've mentioned are places you've went because you're doing like just series in different countries.

[Will Forte]

Yes. I love does start to shift you. You start to have to think about how it affects the kids a little more as they're getting older. And this is like this is gonna be the first year where that stuff becomes something you got to think about a little more because our daughter's going into kindergarten and you know, when it's pre K you can kind of take them out whenever it's a. It's an education in itself like going to a different place and. But it's. Yeah. Now, now we got to think about it a little more. But yeah, I mean when I was single just that was the best thing. Getting an opportunity to, to live for a chunk of time and in a totally different place and to see what it's like to kind of live as a local for a while is the best.

[Pashi Sufi]

Is your preference to be sort of in a hotel and be set up for a while or do you like to get like an apartment or a house when you are somewhere for let's say a month or longer?

[Will Forte]

I would probably Month or longer? I would say definitely some kind of apartment or house.

[Pashi Sufi]

Okay.

[Will Forte]

Just to. Because I don't like. I don't like people coming in and. And cleaning my stuff. Like a nice dirty arrangement.

[Seth Meyers]

You are kind of a. Yeah. I mean, for. For someone who's very particular, you're also living a slob life.

[Will Forte]

Well, it's. I. I've definitely gotten better about that. But it's. It's not even that I need things clean. It's that I need things and not even orderly. I just need them in my work.

[Seth Meyers]

You need them where they were when you left.

[Will Forte]

Right. There is like a method to my madness and only I know it. And I feel everybody bad for everybody who is subjected to my wrath. Wait, you moved the straws,

[Seth Meyers]

but you're chill about it. When the straws get moved, it doesn't like shut you down for a full day. Right.

[Will Forte]

I'm so chill. I actually did just get diagnosed. I finally went through the process of getting diagnosed for ocd. Because for years, Olivia would say. Because I would always tell people, oh, yeah, I'm ocd. And she would say, you're not. You have not been diagnosed. So that she felt like it was irresponsible to say that. I'm like, I'm just telling you I'm ocd. I know it, I know it. And so I went. And of course they're like, oh, yeah, you're fully. Yeah, you're deep in there.

[Pashi Sufi]

You got problems, man.

[Seth Meyers]

You got it the most we've ever seen it. We'd love to put you on the COVID of our new book. Yeah, that's very interesting because Josh. I'm sorry, not Josh. Alexi is non diagnosed and is like confidently will say she has ocd. I think she likes.

[Will Forte]

Do you. And you agree with her that she does?

[Seth Meyers]

I do, yeah. I really do.

[Pashi Sufi]

Yeah, I do too.

[Will Forte]

I went to a doctor. I went to see this doctor specialized in adhd. So I. Because I thought the OCD is going to be a very easy thing for her to pick out. Why not see if I also have that? So, like, I guess I have some elements of adhd, but, you know, I'm kind of light in some areas, heavier in some areas, but it's really. OCD is the main. The main thing. Right? Yeah, it's an exciting concoction of problems.

[Pashi Sufi]

I don't know if you have stories from this or not, but you sort of touched on these dude ranch trips that you did.

[Seth Meyers]

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[Pashi Sufi]

In the past. I don't know if you're Are you still doing that? Is that still an annual thing?

[Will Forte]

No, this would have been back. God, we probably went from the time I was maybe 7 or 8 years old to about 14 or 15 still. So great. And then I think they shut down the ranch. It was called the, it was called the. No, Boulder. Boulder River Ranch. And I think that whole area got bought up by a bunch of, you know, turned into private ranches. I feel like Tom Brokaw had something to do with it. I feel like.

[Pashi Sufi]

Oh yeah, yeah, you did. You mentioned that last time, but you said it was sort of with your more hunting and fishing minded family members of which you were not really one of them and you were not skilled at fly fishing or anything like that. But were, were there also? I always think of dude ranches as being a horse based thing. Were you going out on rides? Are you?

[Will Forte]

Yeah, we would go out.

[Pashi Sufi]

Experienced horseman.

[Will Forte]

Yeah, I felt pretty comfortable on a horse. I mean most of the time you're just going in a pack and you're walking those horses, man, they're. It's, it's. As a kid you're not really thinking about it. But then the older I got, the more you just realize it's just a, it's just a big huge thing that could trip just like a human being and you know, roll on top of it.

[Seth Meyers]

I was on that as a kid. I, I'll tell you that from the very beginning. Horses, I was just like, no, thank you. And also just not just a bit like they're not. There's like a trip, but they got their own brains. And I know somebody's like, will tell you they've been trained. But a horse at any moment could be like, I'm out. You know, I saw a snake and I'm not feeling good anymore. And I don't care that a kid's on top me. And I'm going to take off at a full speed.

[Will Forte]

I have a story about a horse that this is. Yes, this is exactly what you're saying. I went on a. It was a sunset cruise.

[Seth Meyers]

Sunset horse ride.

[Will Forte]

Horse cruise. Sunset horse cruise. And do you, you know my friend? You guys both know Michael? Michael.

[Seth Meyers]

Yeah.

[Will Forte]

Yeah, he. So he had no last name? No last name. No, I'll say it. Michael Thomas, wonderful guy, very fun guy. And it was his birthday, so he got it like he had just had a back operation. He had had like several years, was having back issues. Finally had the operation that works. The doctor gives him like a list of four or five things to definitely not do horseback riding is one of them. He immediately gets together a horse, you know, sunset horse thing. So. So anyway, we're all going up. This is in Los Angeles, and I have this broken down old horse, and he's got one that seems to be in pretty good shape because he's, you know, making it race up to the front. And then he comes back to visit me because my horse is way lagging in the. In the background. And then at a certain point, after one of the times he came down to visit me, he starts. He says, I'm going to go back up and check in with the group. He starts taking off. And then about 50 yards in front of me, his horse just stops. Immediately stops. And it was very weird. And then the horse turns slowly to face the edge of the path, which was like this very steep hillside, and just started slowly walking to the edge of the path, pauses for a second, and then threw itself over the side of the hill. And the last thing I saw was Michael had known enough to, like, get his feet out of the stirrups. And I saw him clear of the horse, but I just heard this thwack, thwack, thwack, thwack. And, you know, the people eventually came back down the guide and this horse. I guess what happened was the horse was having a heart attack. This is what they think. So he just, like, wanted to end it and threw himself over the. And it was so nuts. I remember they radioed down to the base and a couple women from the camp had come up, and everyone's crying and they're all saying, blaze, Blaze is dead.

[Seth Meyers]

I'm sorry. I've been laughing at this, but keep going. I'm sorry. Now that I realize that this horse died, but there is something very. Just. It seems like, again, a horse having a human emotion of like, I'm not going to do this. Yeah, I'm out.

[Will Forte]

Yeah. And. And I mean, I'm not going to say. I won't say this to Michael, but if he listens this, he's got to know that I partially find him responsible for killing that horse. He was really trotting him up and down way to clearly. But Blaze lived a good life. Blaze was a racehorse for a while. And, you know, I think he was kind. I feel like they said he was like 23 or something, which is so.

[Seth Meyers]

So how would you say. And again, top of your head. How would you say in the end, he was shot down

[Will Forte]

in a blaze of glory.

[Seth Meyers]

Wow. I thought that was going to be a lot easier for you to Grab.

[Will Forte]

Sorry. The best part was they brought up a horse and we continued on and just kept going. And it was like we were making all these uncomfortable choices, jokes. And then they had said, like, we'll go get them in the morning. And then the end of, the end of the ride, you go down to the camp again or the little area where you start from the ranch and you have a barbecue and you just heard all these coyotes howling up there and they were just having a feast. So maybe they came up to like get the, get the reins and stuff like that.

[Pashi Sufi]

Well, part of me as a guy who's married to an equestrian, I feel like I want to defend horses in this moment, but I think those rides where you just sort of, you know, get some rando horses that maybe just have to walk along the edge of these canyons. It's not always the best situation.

[Will Forte]

I'm on your side. I do like, I do like horses and I, I trust them. I just like, I see them as. This doesn't make sense, but they're only human. Right.

[Seth Meyers]

Did. Has Michael gotten on a horse since that moment? He's just like, horse again. He's.

[Will Forte]

He's one of those guys with just that attitude of like, whatever. That was a one time thing.

[Seth Meyers]

What was his, what was. So his thought process was, something's wrong with Blaze. I'm going to just like loosen my feet out of the stirrups just in case.

[Will Forte]

Well, just like, you know, it was unnerving for me and I'm, you know, you know, 50 yards away. So for him, this thing is just going closer and closer to this. It's a very, it's not quite a cliff, but it's a very steep hillside where like, this horse is clearly not doing what it's supposed to do. And you're like, okay, this is very weird. So, yeah, I don't remember what his thought process was, but it was like,

[Pashi Sufi]

yeah, but already like, I mean, I. These are the canyons sort of right above my house.

[Will Forte]

Yeah.

[Pashi Sufi]

You know, a mile away, maybe mile and a half to get up to where you were. And they are very steep. And if you're on the edge of them, it is somewhat precarious. And also if you're on the edge of them on horseback, you're just that much higher up. So I can certainly see Michael's impulse to get those feet out of the stirrups and be like, I might have to get off this horse.

[Will Forte]

Yes.

[Seth Meyers]

There's a lot of things I don't want to do if it means Close to an edge of something. I mean, like, Positano, Italy, is one of the most beautiful places in the world. But, like, to get there, you got to drive up those mountains and, like, just so close to the edge. And I would never want to do it again. I just did the whole ride. I was just. My heart was in my throat, and I just wasn't worth it. When I got to our little village, I was like, all this stuff. They got hard salami at the bottom of this mountain.

[Will Forte]

I'm with you, though. That is one of the most beautiful places. When I think when people ask me my favorite places in the world, I'm lucky enough to have gotten to go there, too. And, man, it is the most charming place. Would it make you feel better if you were driving the car yourself?

[Seth Meyers]

Probably. I will say at the time, our dad was driving. And my fear always, and I said, this is why I won't go in a hot air balloon with my family, is that my dad would be like, when as we went over the side of the cliff due to him, like, you know, driving badly, I would just hear my mom lay into him. That would be like, the last thing I'd hear.

Sandberg's movie. And with Jason Momoa and I, I did that crazy walk where I got 80,000 steps.

And then, Josh, I heard this. Yeah.

My friend. Our friend, the person you're listening to, tried to do 80. Well, you did do 80,000 steps in one day.

[Will Forte]

Yeah, 81. 81,000. And I was diagnosed.

[Seth Meyers]

You got diagnosed as OCD. There you go. Just real quick.

And. And real quick, for everybody who didn't see you on the show, I think they're picturing a beautiful Hawaiian hike that you planned ahead. And it's all, like, the most gorgeous 81,000 steps you've ever taken. How many of the 81,000 steps. Would Hawaii Board of Tourism sign off on as, like, actual good places to walk?

[Will Forte]

Probably 25,000 of those steps were.

[Seth Meyers]

Yeah.

[Will Forte]

Were not potentially life hazardous.

[Seth Meyers]

Like, and you were on the side of a highway.

[Will Forte]

Sides of highways. But I was in too deep. I had to keep going. And the, you know, I guess I could have turned around because the step counter doesn't know where I'm going. It just.

[Pashi Sufi]

Do you just go? Do you just, like, walk outside and start walking? Do you do. No. No research? Do you not have, like, trails or.

[Will Forte]

This time, when I had first landed there, right. I. Solomon. Solomon and I were going to meet up with Andy Sandberg and Rob Klein and their wives for dinner up in Lanikai. And so as I was trying to figure out how far. How long it would take me to get to Lanikai, I accidentally pressed the walk button and it snapped. Made it seem like there was a walking path. So I'm like, oh, I'm gonna clock that for later. So then I got my Uber in the next couple days later, I'm like, I'm gonna do that walk that I saw try to go for my record. And it doesn't really say, oh, there are parts of this that I probably could have gotten arrested for being on the highway, like, walking where. But, like. But this was on the. The app. This was. Yeah, this was like, I think this

[Seth Meyers]

is an important lesson. I don't think those apps tell you like, no, you can't do it, man. You can't walk. Yeah, I think they're just, like, almost built. Like, you have to walk there at a risk of your own, like, well, being.

[Will Forte]

Okay. Oh, we should have told you that we take you right over the mouth of a volcano, and this is a serial killer's house. But go. Just go through the door.

[Pashi Sufi]

So you said you were trying to get your record. Did you. Is 81,000 steps a record for you?

[Will Forte]

Yes, that was a record for me. But at a certain point, I was like, I'm gonna get to get to a hundred thousand. I thought I could do it. And then I think. I think at that point, I'm not positive if I would have the will to do this, but I think I would, you know, if I got a hundred thousand, I would rip the thing off and, you know, the steps. Done it. I don't need you anymore.

[Pashi Sufi]

What do you. How many miles do you think 81,000 steps is?

[Will Forte]

I know for a fact that it is 36 miles. Yeah.

[Pashi Sufi]

Are you wrecked the next day?

[Will Forte]

No.

[Seth Meyers]

No. Interesting.

[Will Forte]

When I went to bed no. And in fact, the. The craziest thing is that. So I probably walked about 25 or 26 miles to get to Lanikai. Met with our buddy Mike Graney, who lives in Hawaii. And I was like, oh, I'm going to want to keep going anyway. Why don't we do this? There's this. I think it's called the pillbox hike up there. And so when I got there, my legs hurt so bad. But it was like I had a new set of legs because I was just kind of walking the same flat surface. And then if you're walking a different pitch, it's like you're just using different muscles. And it was like I could start all over again.

I just have hokas.

Yeah, they're good. They're good. Oh, it did start raining. It started raining, started drizzling in the morning. I'm like, oh, this is really nice. This is great. And then it was just. Toward the end, was pouring. So, like, at a certain point, I really did think that I ripped off all the skin off my big toe, because it was just like. Was my toe, but it was.

Yeah, yeah.

And so I thought I was gonna have to stop. And then it was just some weird. I don't know what it was.

Was it ever a situation where it was like, pouring rain and you were on the side of a highway, and if a person who knew you had seen you, they would have thought, that can't possibly be Will Forte.

I think anyone who knows me would probably go, that could possibly be one for a time.

I've never met them. I just got to have like a very. My first good hang with Alexis, John's wife. John and Will are longtime writing partners. Did we ever talk about the road trip that John and I took?

No. No. This is great. This is why you get to come back for a second Visit.

This was 1996. We flew to Nashville. I don't remember why Nashville, but we just rented a car and we knew that we were going to fly back home from Newark, New Jersey and so we rented a Corsica. I remember it was a Corsica A red Corsica. And we started in Nashville, and all we knew was we were going to Branson, Missouri. That was it.

[Seth Meyers]

Okay.

[Will Forte]

And that we were.

[Seth Meyers]

How long is that drive? Nashville to Branson is what? That can't be that long.

[Will Forte]

I don't remember, but it's not tremendously long. I remember we stopped, we landed in Nashville, spent the night, went to Graceland in the morning, and then by the. By that night, we were in Branson, Missouri, and then spent the whole day, the next day in Branson. Oh, I don't know if I've ever told you this story. Did you. So in Branson, we don't know anything to do. We're just like, let's just do whatever. Let's. Let's figure it out on the fly. So we did this thing called Waltzing Waters, which is just these fountains, these choreographed fountains inside this dank, mildewy room. And there's. There. Some of the shows have live piano players, and some, like the one we went to, just has piped in music, and you're just seeing a bunch of water squirting around. So we did that, and then we went to this. I remember Kirby Van Birch and Philip Wellburn or something like that. It was a magician slash comedian show, which was.

[Seth Meyers]

Kirby Van Burch sounds like a sketch character that you wrote.

[Will Forte]

This was all I remember is. And John does a much better impersonation, but he's. He clearly was from, like. I think it seemed like he was maybe from Romania or something like that. But he would talk very slowly to try to. And he just kept saying, raps sand. He would do things with different colored sands. Red sands from the Sahara, blue sands from the Gobi. And just like. So John's very good at that. Anyway, we do that show.

[Seth Meyers]

What's his name one more time.

[Will Forte]

Kirby Van Burch, I believe is.

[Seth Meyers]

Okay, great, great.

[Will Forte]

And then the final show of the night, we weren't sure what we were going to do. We're driving by, we see that Tony Orlando has a show, has a theater. And we ran up to the booth and said, hey, what's. Is there still a show going on? They're like, the show's about to start. We still have tickets. So John buys us two tickets. We run in, and the tickets are the second row, and it's like a pretty packed theater. It made no sense. I have no idea what. So anyway, we're watching Tony Orlando and John. I knew Tony Orlando pretty well. John, his parents were huge Tony Orlando fans, so he knew it really well. So he's Singing along to all the songs. So much so that Tony Orlando started, like, talking to us in between the numbers. And he would, you know, started out with like, this one. You know, I wrote this one before you guys were even born. And so we had this kind of dialogue going. Then there's an intermission and we went up to the. We bought like these souvenir plates with his face on it. And everyone's stopping us saying, you guys are doing great. Everyone is. We're the youngest people there by 30 years, for sure. Anyway, second half is just grows and grows until he's like singing and came down and has taken a picture with us as he's singing. And the very end of it is he gives this just inspirational speech. Tony Orlando, just an amazing, wonderful, delightful person, gives us inspirational speech. We left there going, this is the best show we've ever seen. We have to write him a fan letter immediately. So we go out to the Corsica and we're taking forever to write this letter because it's like, oh, that's too cheesy. Start over. Tony's gonna think it's too cheesy. So we're going for so long that eventually his security guy comes out and says, what are you creeps doing out here? And we're like, oh, we're writing a fan letter for Tony. He's like, oh, that's cool. Well, when you're done, give it to me. I'll give it to him. So we finally finish this letter, give it to this guy, and then we take off on our trip. And this is 96, so there's no cell phone, there's no nothing. And as the first, you know, the day two of a two and a half week trip, we go around on this trip, finally fly home. And when we get home, each of us has a letter in our mailbox. He wrote on the very back of the letter that we gave him. I guess that means he didn't want to keep the letter. No, but he wrote this just very sweet message back. And then one of us, we each got a letter and it was the coolest thing. Had the pictures developed, cut to 2011 or 2012. I'm gonna. Andy Samberg asked me if I want to do a part in his movie with Adam Sandler, which was, of course, an immediate yes. And then I found out Tony Orlando was gonna play, I think it was Sandler's boss. He was playing a role, or maybe his father in law. He's playing a big supporting role in this movie. So I grabbed every. I still had the pictures. I still had the note that he had given me. I brought the souvenir plate and I met him and I said, you're not gonna believe this. Told him this whole story that I just told you and then showed him all these things and we just became buds. And I even said, solomon, you gotta frickin fly out here. You gotta. And so he came out and we still talk to Tony all the time and we go out and visit him, go see his shows, and he's just a delight. He had said the last time we saw him, like a year ago or something, or maybe a year and a half ago. And he was saying he was maybe gonna retire. So I'm not sure if he has.

[Seth Meyers]

Does he still do his shows exclusively in Branson, or does he do them other places?

[Will Forte]

No, he's. Last time we saw him, he was out. Out near Vegas, but I think he still lives in Branson, but I don't think he has the theater anymore.

[Seth Meyers]

Still the youngest people there at a Tony Orlando show. Even though you're in, like, me in your 50s now?

[Will Forte]

Yeah, probably. Yeah.

[Pashi Sufi]

I mean, somebody's bringing their kids, somebody's bringing their.

[Seth Meyers]

Who is the Tony Orlando of Branson now? Which is. You know what I mean? So when you saw him in 96, the normal Tony Orlando fan is what, their 60s then?

[Will Forte]

Yeah, it feels like that's about right. Although it's so hard to judge because when you're in your 20s, everybody seems like they're 60.

[Seth Meyers]

Yeah.

[Will Forte]

Like people who are 40, you probably think are 60. But it did seem like, you know, a bunch of pretty old people.

[Seth Meyers]

I'm. I mean, it's definitely a nicer ending that you are now friends with him. I was a little hopeful that you would tell him that whole story. And he's like, look, kid, I had somebody who wrote, return my fan mail. Look, when I got a letter from a couple weirdos, I just gave that to Stephanie. She probably wrote back to you guys.

[Will Forte]

No, he's.

[Seth Meyers]

What was his closer? Do you remember Tony Orlando's closer? Is that a better question for Solomon?

[Will Forte]

I don't remember what his closing was, but I feel like it might have been a cover of something.

I do remember, you know, a lot of the stuff. Like, you know, Ty Yellow Ribbon, He's. He's such a great storyteller too. So he'd tell the stories in between. He'd be telling these stories of how the song came about and like just the story behind the song. He's just. He's a delightful Guy.

And you are a lover. Do you still travel? Would you travel?

[Will Forte]

I'm not. No, no, no, no. I am not a lover of Tony. We are not lovers. He has got a delightful wife, Franny. Mutual lover, Jenny. And I'm friends with theirs, and I don't want them to get the idea that I'm his lover.

[Seth Meyers]

Thank you. But you'll travel for a concert. You love going to a concert.

[Will Forte]

Oh, yeah.

What are vacations? I mean, can you remember a time you. Have you ever gone, like, overseas to see your favorite band?

[Will Forte]

I have gone, yes. I've seen. I've gone to a lot of Radiohead shows overseas. Germany. Saw them in Germany a couple times at a couple festivals. Yeah, I've done a lot of trials. Let's see where else. I saw, again, Radiohead in London. Oh, I went to. I went to Ireland, so my buddies and I were gonna go see Ozzy Osbourne in San Diego, I think. And then he got sick and he canceled his show. So we saw that he was like, eight months later or something like that gonna play a show in Ireland. So we're like. We had a. We had another high school buddy who lived in Dublin, so we said, let's all go visit our friend and go see Ozzy out there as a makeup. So we got out there and landed to the news that he also was sick for that one and cancel the show. So can't say we didn't try. That's great. Have you guys traveled. Have you traveled for concerts?

[Seth Meyers]

I've never traveled for a concert. I just remember from the very first time I met you, realizing that you were a lot more. Your life was a lot more concert centric than mine.

[Will Forte]

Oh, yeah. Oh. Oh. I mean, the big one was getting to go to that Led Zeppelin tribute for Ahmet Erdogan out in London. And that was during the writers strike, or SAG strike, whatever strike. We had been months and months being off of snl, and I was, like, the only person kind of praying for the strike to go on a little bit longer.

[Seth Meyers]

Oh, we're talking, like, 08.09.

[Will Forte]

Well, it was on Saturday night. This would have been 08. Either 07 or 08. Yeah. Whenever that strike was. And I was like, everyone was. And I felt so guilty because I was like, I just need it to go on for two more weeks. Because I knew that Lauren would want to jump right on a show, and there was no way he was gonna say yes. Just go for the Zeppelin show and come back next week.

[Pashi Sufi]

I have tickets. I'm desperate. To see a complete. A total solar eclipse. Like, it's something that I really, really want to see. And there is a. Bjork does this festival in ICELAND. And this August 12th, she's gonna be doing a DJ set at this festival during a total solar eclipse. And I bought two tickets just with, like, the notion of, if I can, I would love to go. And then we have a live show in Philadelphia that night. So I can't go. But that was. That was sort of.

[Will Forte]

Wait, can I ask, is the festival called Biototif?

[Pashi Sufi]

It's called, like, Ecologia.

[Will Forte]

Okay. We went. I went with Pete Hike and a bunch of guys out to a festival in Iceland that was like this tiny little island, the Westman Air Islands, I think it's called. And it was so fun. It was like this festival. Music would be going deep into the night, and it's. And it's all, like, families. There'd be grandparents there and grandkids, and it was so fun. It was so interesting.

[Pashi Sufi]

Yeah.

[Seth Meyers]

You mentioned don't do it again next year.

[Will Forte]

Sorry.

[Pashi Sufi]

Yes, well, whenever. Whenever there's a solar eclipse.

[Seth Meyers]

You mentioned Rob Klein, also a great writer, a friend of ours, a former SNL writer. We were. Josh and I were with our wives in Iceland years ago, before they were even our wives. And where was that crazy hotel we went to?

[Pashi Sufi]

Posh.

[Seth Meyers]

Do you remember the name of it?

[Pashi Sufi]

Oh, it was like, on the. On the Snus and Flu peninsula.

[Seth Meyers]

Yeah. It was so far out of Reykjavik.

[Pashi Sufi]

It was the Hotel Budir.

[Seth Meyers]

It's like, yes, nice. And just cannot believe how far we were. Like, it felt like we were on the edge of the Earth. The closest I've come to the edge of the Earth. And if Blaze was there, he would have jumped right off. So we were there, and we walked into the bar of this little hotel, not even a big hotel. And Klein was sitting there with Lucy. Shut up. Independent. And the best thing about it is Rob Klein, the most, like, just like the same heart rate, no matter what's happening. Like, just the most. Even keeled, never panicking. Rob Klein. And he just like. I remember we walked in, he's like, hey, buddy. I'm like, what? Hey, buddy. Do you know what the statistical improbabilities are of this moment right now? We're in on the tip of the Earth. And you're like, oh, hello, friend.

[Will Forte]

Can I ask, did you guys now this. Back when I was in Iceland, we also did something very memorable. And I may have even brought this up because this was a big part of a Big road trip for me. A very memorable, memorable part. The penis museum.

[Seth Meyers]

Oh, we did not go to the museum.

[Pashi Sufi]

We missed the penis museum.

[Will Forte]

It really now they make it easy because back when, back when we were there, it was up at the very. I think it was the northern part of the island in this kind of smaller place called Husavik. And you just show up and it's like, well, I guess we'll go to the. It's either. I'm not sure still if it's a whale penis museum with other animals or just a penis museum.

[Seth Meyers]

I feel like this is where I also want to say that knowing Will, I feel like you're the guy who like definitely books a trip to see the penis museum but doesn't tell anybody. And then you are like, let's go have to this cafe in this town. And then you're like, oh, I guess we're here. What are we going to do now?

[Pashi Sufi]

They got.

[Seth Meyers]

It's right across the street. Hey, the waiter just mentioned this penis museum.

[Will Forte]

Well, look, I will say that I was not the person who did line this up, but I will say I hang out with a lot of very like minded people.

[Pashi Sufi]

Was the penis museum worth it?

[Will Forte]

It's fascinating. I mean it really is like, you know, puts penises in perspective. You know, it really like genuine, literally.

[Seth Meyers]

Right?

[Will Forte]

I mean and if you have not seen an elephant penis detached from an elephant, you're missing out. It is.

[Seth Meyers]

I like that you just heard. You were cutting off. Everybody's like, yeah dude, I've seen it. You're like detached. My bad, my bad. I've seen her attack.

[Will Forte]

But here's the good news. You don't have to go up to Husavik anymore to get to it. It's right in Reykjavik. So you probably. It would still be a trek for you guys if you go back to the hotel Boudoir Badir Budir.

[Seth Meyers]

The Husavik town council went to the state. The federal government of Iceland was like, you got to move this museum. We're getting all these penis tourists. We're not a big enough town to absorb all these. So what was but was elephant like when you think back to the penis museum, was elephant the one that has stayed with you the longest?

[Will Forte]

Yes. Yeah, yeah. But there's also the whales. See the, the whales would be in. Encased in glass and like some kind of, you know, water formaldehyde situation. And it was really hard to

[Seth Meyers]

the elephant penis maybe must have been stuffed, really retained. What's that?

[Seth Meyers]

When you said it was really hard I said, that's what the female whale said. I was a little late, though. So can we slide it up in the edit?

Yes, yes. But I think it was also just because it's, you know, it's kind of natural state is out exposed to the elements, whereas a whale penis, you know, thrives in the water. And that's where they do all their whale fighting.

A little unfair. They were like, we can't just show it like loose on the land.

It was never supposed to be like that.

[Will Forte]

Yes, exactly. I do think that there might. This might have been the subject of a documentary because there was at the time when we were there, there was. There was some talk that there was a human who was trying to be the first human penis in the museum. And then. But the person had not died yet. So, like, it was like, let's see. And this other guy was like, no, I want to be the first one. So it was kind of like a race to see who died first or so. But there's a documentary I think about. It might be called like the Last Member or something. I forget.

But there's not that bad.

It's just a delightful. It's so. It's so close to San Francisco, but far enough away. It's just like. You feel like you're a million miles away. It's not quite the city. It's just this electric town. I'm not doing a great job, am I? Nobody's gonna go.

It's great. Look, last time you said not. Not a great place to go visit, but a great place to grow up.
