Nicole
Chapter 19 Halden can actually be helpful with the change in plan. Now to go to the Isles. We just need one more thing. So it's off to anchor to get the aemilion Citrine. After wandering the streets, thanks to Grady's blaming Cat's less than stellar penmanship, the map was actually upside down. Grady. But you're doing a subpar job. The crew this time, including Meera, arrives at the desiccated poor million town in search of the citrine. Sadly, no. This is not a special killing orange for Jack Barlow. Hanging outside with Aura wound so tight, I'm surprised she's able to get the stick up her ass. Violet finds herself attempting to soothe Aura's fears. But Aura ain't having it. After finding the citrine, Grady comes out to the street, scaring the shit out of Aura. And Grady becomes a fireball. And like a round of dominoes, the buildings start burning down one by one. And the words of Pompeii. How are we gonna be an optimist about this? And it's our cue to get the out of here. Well, minus Grady and the now very sk. Skewered Aura.
Lexi
Bye.
Nicole
After fighting off the Wyvern, the remaining task force members make it back with the citrine. And a note. A note from Theophany. Dun Dun Dun. Chapter 20. Violet has another meeting with the Scenarium. This time Quest Squad. Violet's version is on the agenda. The name change is almost as satisfying as Whenever we get Reputation Taylor's version, Daddy Atos tries his best to push back on Violet's squad demands. But again, Halden gets a point for letting Violet pick her team. Dare I say go Halden? No. No I don't. Violet leaves the meeting feeling satisfied with the new plan. And Meera storms in, making a few choices of her own. You know, Mira, I'm sure if you asked Drake nicely, he would have gotten on his knees for you just as quick. Chapter 21 the flight to Takara takes longer than expected thanks to Halden in his pretty little basket. Yes, travel math, here we come. Time for an overnight stay in Tokaris home, which Zaden masterfully steers the conversation to secur room for his not a professor ass. And Violet. But don't worry, Halden. They're just doubling up. As ordered Tokarys. After witnessing Halden in all of his basket, Glory suggests a new plan. They will sail for Devarelli and the winged ones will meet them on the island. So 24 hours later, we're in the sky. But what is that feeling so sudden and new? There's no magic in the air. Chapter 22 it's getting hot in here so take off all your clothes. Oh wait, it's just hot as fuck this far south. The riot lands at Tokaris summer home in Deverelli and tensions with the lack of magic and thus a lack of being able to speak to their bondage. With one exception, the dragons leave to go hunt with everyone else heading inside for a nippy nap. Xaden, though enamored by the view and the feeling of finally being able to have a moment of peace, he decides to stay outside on the beach. Don't worry, Be happy now do do do do do. I didn't mean to make this so musical.
Lexi
Aw, you know what else makes me not worry and be happy? Today's episode sponsor Quint's there's nothing nicer than the simple joys in life, the little luxuries that make your day a tiny bit brighter. Lexi
Quince.com FFG all right writers, it's time to don our signet power and discuss key insights, character analysis, lore, foreshadowing theories and oh so much more. Let's see how Quest Squad Grady's version works together on their first mission. Remember how Takaris gave Violet a missive that states he can get her, or rather someone noble, an audience with the King of Devarelli but in exchange, the King Devarelli requires the A million citrine, which is a lesser magic amplifier worn by one of the members of the First Drift. So the King of Devarelli says he'll take a meeting with the continent, specifically Navarre, if they give him this precise permeal artifact. Luckily, Queen Mariah has agreed to gift this to the King of Devarelli. But it's Violet and co's responsibility to retrieve the Emilian Citrine. Unfortunately, it's located in Ankha, which is a port meal city that the Venin have already invaded, by the way. Gem Watch. A citrine is a yellow variety of quartz. This gem symbolizes joy and abundance. This Emilian Citrine was a lesser magic amplifier that belonged to Amelia, one of the members of the first draft from the Great War. As we Learned in Chapter 19's epigraph quote, the gem given to you upon graduation from Cliff Spain should always be worn close to your heart. So we can assume this gem was Amelia's and part of the start of this tradition for flyers. Violet has been trying to convince Grady to go south to Devarelli instead of north like he wants. He doesn't think the seventh dragon den would be on the Isles because the Isle Kingdoms would have bragged about dragons in their region. But Violet is insistent because she has connected Devarelli to the second Crowblin Uprising, which included reference to feather tales. So she has figured out an indirect connection between Devarelli and dragons, which is at least a good starting point for them. Prince Dush Canoe Halden has agreed to use his royal leverage to make the squad chase this Deverel lead. Which means. Too bad. So sad. Grady. We are now on a mission to retrieve the million citrine in Anka so we can have the gift we need to secure this meeting between Halden and the King of Devi. Four days after Violet and Zaden agree to call in this help from Halden and get the A million Citrine so they can go to Devarelli Quest Squad. Grady's version is en route to Anka with a new addition to the squad. Mira's here. Huzzah. Halden threw his royal weight around to get her part of the squad going beyond the wards, which I can't help but laugh just the tiniest bit that it wasn't Zaden who used his leverage as Duke of Tyrandor to get Mira. It's like Halden beat him to it with his superior title Mirror. It's like a little dig of being like Haha I'm more powerful than you. We might hate this walking red flag, but at least he's trying to impress Violet and is actually being helpful right now with making Grady go south and recruiting Mira to the team.
Nicole
So we have this side quest to Anka, which is necessary to meet with the King of Jabarelli, where they must have something worth trading for in order for him to, I don't know, grant them a favor in grad lady's eyes. This side quest serves another purpose though. Getting the squad a chance to see how well it does together. Grady trusts everyone after all, so it makes sense that with a little mission, they will all get there too. I like to think back to Violet's first year during the squad battle. She had already bonded with her own year mates, but hadn't really gotten a chance to work with the older writers like Imogen or Heaton or any of them. So in Grady's eyes, I see how he hopes, emphasis on hopes, that this would be kind of like the squad battle, giving them an opportunity to learn how to work with each other.
Lexi
I've actually wondered if some members of this task force are from his Biscaya squad because they seem so random to everyone else, and they're either lieutenants or captains, so maybe he wanted to get the old gang back together and relive the glory days from being such a tight unit back when they were at Bisgaas.
Nicole
I like to think about this as like getting together the old Acapella. This is what that just reminded me of. There's only one glaring. Only one. There's many glaring problems, but here's one of them. Grady. Too many of these people really don't like each other, and it's predominantly filled by Nevarian loyalists, making it a clear divide between them and the Oration Riders, AKA Violet, Zaden and Meera. But wait, they're going to Anka, which is in Poromil, to fetch the Poromelian artifact from the Flyers version of the First Six, AKA the First Drift. So naturally they must be taking at least one poor a million flyer, right? Right. Wrong. Because this prejudice runs so deep, apparently for Grady. And of course Aura, who's a big old brown noser. Violet fought for Cat specifically to join them on this mission. She wrote the map for them, after all. She remembers, even if it's just vaguely where the artifact is. She's a flyer and can navigate the streets with Kirilair, her Griffin, when the streets are way too small for dragons to get through. Plus, Griffins are faster on the Ground. So should shit hit the f wee, they can go really, really fast. But no, Grady's excuse is that including a flyer whose handwriting is atrocious when he's the one who has the map upside down like an I dot would throw off the dynamic of this group he has the hopes of creating trust in. Plus, Griffins can't keep up in the skies, which I will get to later, because, yes, that is true. Personally, I think he's just fearful of them and he's masking that by listing out their inadequacies.
Lexi
Yeah, it's that air of superiority of thinking that they don't need flyers.
Nicole
It's like. Just like we haven't needed them for 400 years or whatever. Like this is aggravating beyond belief. And it's such a fuck you to the flyers. This is their city, their sacred artifact from one of the first ever flyers. A piece of their culture that their queen okayed Navarre to have for this mission, and Navarre didn't even allow them to come. Now this dolt can't even read a fucking map. You know who would have helped? Grady? The person who wrote the damn map.
Lexi
God, this also feels so ironic considering Grady was the RSC professor in Iron Flame, where part of the class was literally land navigation, which Grady gave them a hard time for and lectured them on checking their egos. Oh, my God.
Nicole
I didn't even think about that. So this mission includes two groups split between being on the ground in Inca to retrieve the artifact and patrolling the skies to keep watch for incoming Venon and Wyverns. Violet, Zaden, Mira, Grady, Aura, and Captain Henson, who's a wind wielder, will all be on the ground. Lt. Pugh, who has farsight, and Lt. Foley, who's an agrarian, are on patrols in the skies. I want to just call out, nice job. Especially Lieutenant Pugh. You have farsight. What the fuck happened? And I guess Anna, Winshire and Halden didn't come because it includes flying and their baskets weren't ready yet. But not having these two people apparently doesn't throw off the dynamics, so whatever.
Lexi
Technically, Captain Windshire and Halden can't come no matter what, because only Dragon Riders are going in any case. I also can't imagine Halden agreeing to go on this mission before the real mission. He needs to go to Devarelli because he's the one with the noble blood, but he doesn't need to come on this quest. This is beneath him.
Nicole
I hate him.
Lexi
This is going to the grocery store. He's never done that in his life before arriving in Inca or Anka. They actually say it both ways. In the audiobook, we get a nice chat between Violet and her dragons. I feel like there's been so much else going on in this book with the on the ground politics that we haven't really gotten a good old high in the sky conversation since chapter 1. Since aka is in Poromil and most definitely beyond the wards, Violet notices that the wild magic in the air feels different than it has before. It is more intense and feels like a current rushing around her, making Violet feel the urge to pluck strands of magic from the very sky and weave runes. Interestingly, Taryn explains that the venom have seen to it that there's actually less power out here, despite it feeling like more power to Violeta Violet. He says that because Violet grows more powerful every day, she is becoming more and more capable of recognizing the power around her. The strands of power that she wants to pluck from the air are a perfect example. When she first started weaving runes several months ago, she struggled to identify and pull the strands of power from thin air. Now she's honing her power and becoming so much more familiar with it. So the same strands of power that were previously hard to identify are now glaringly obvious. Taryn and Violet won't risk Andarna going on this mission, though. She has to stay behind at the ward's border of Somarra, which is on the way to Inca from Basgaeth. After all. Theophany is hunting Andarna, and they don't want to present such an unnecessary opportunity for her evil villain bestie. But as Andarna says, she can defend herself against Venon. She burned that Aesim at the Battle of Bisgaeth after all. Taryn counters that a dragon's first fire burns the hottest, which may have explained this phenomenon of Indana roasting the Venin. Quick pause, because it does kind of make one wonder if this was actually the reason Andarna was able to burn the Venin, especially considering Andarna will try to burn Theophany at the end of the book and she will be unsuccessful. And at that time she is the same color black as she was when she initially burned the Venon. I'm personally of the belief that Andarna and the rest of the Irids definitely do have this special ability because they are magic, unlike the other dragons. It's so far outside the realms of usual dragon magic that Taryn dismisses it like the curmudgeon dragon that he is, and Darna mentions in the prologue that magic feels different when she changes color, and that maybe her use of power in that moment altered the Venon and weakened her enough to blister. There's absolutely something to that, but I don't think it's so cut and dry. It's not actually as simple as in Darna changing her color to black and being able to burn Venon as she may have initially thought. The first Venon she burned was an Asam, whereas Theophany is a Maven. That's a way higher level Venon, so I think the magic works works a little differently. Plus, Theophany had been a high priestess and was now cursed by Dune, so that might be another element of unknown magic at play. With proper training and understanding of how her magic changes, I believe Andarna could have burned Theophany. But it wasn't as easy or straightforward or honestly as lucky as she assumed it was. With the ASM all of this to say, I think Andarna will learn more about what it means to be an Irid to be magic in future books. And maybe she'll be able to hone her very unique powers into becoming that weapon to defeat the venom. One more bit of information from this in flight conversation. There is a three to four day limit that riders can physically be separated from their dragons before they begin suffering the fatal consequences. Twelve hours after separation, the rider will begin to feel the pain of the distance apart. This really just drives home how dependent riders are on their dragons. They need them close by to survive because their life is bonded to the dragon. And this is also some foreshadowing for what will happen eventually within Darna breaking the bond. So sad. I also wonder if this is major foreshadowing for a future separation and the person suffering the consequences. Also I assume in the Iron Flame because Andarna was in the dreamless sleep while separated for more than 12 hours with Violet, she did not feel the pain. I'm just gonna go with that reasoning there. Luckily though, for this mission they've got a plan so Violet won't feel the pain of separation from Andarna. Everyone, including Andarna, flies from Bisgaeth to Samara. That's an eight hour flight for Taran, who's extra fast. Then it's three hours from Samara to Anka, one hour to locate the gym, then three hours back to Samara. If all goes well, Violet and Adarna will only be separated for seven hours.
Nicole
But wait, we have a travel timestamp of three hours from Samarra. To Anka. Which means one thing. The first of multiple travel maps this episode. So if Taran can fly four miles in five minutes, which roughly translates to 48 miles per hour, which, I'm not gonna lie, I thought it was gonna be more than that. But it's not. This three hour travel would be roughly 144 miles from Samara to Anka. But wait, Tarin has a riot with him, which means he's slower. So we have to adjust our algorithm. In Iron Flame, when the Venin are heading into Tyrandor warded airspace, this is when Violet figures out Zayton's second signet. It takes Taran two hours to fly to their destination and sigeil an extra 15 minutes. Which means instead of going 48 miles per cairn, Segale travels 42.6 miles per hour. So we have a new miles per hour. Let's figure out how many miles it is from Samara to Anka. Why? Because. Why not? It takes them three hours. So it's 127.8 miles. Or if you're like, I'm not American, please do it in kilometers. It is 205.67 kilometers from Samara to Inca.
Lexi

While we have yet to go to Inca in the previous two books, this is not the first time we've heard of this poor million town In Iron Flame during their first battle brief as traitors Brennan announces that Inca had has fallen. This was around mid October. It is now early February, but it looks like that Venin attack really did a number Inca is in the Breivik province and it is along the Stonewater River. Remember from last episode, the Stonewater river is where the map of Venin activity is basically covered in red because it seems to be the path that the Venin took up from the Barrens previously to this Quest squad. Leaving the rest stop at Samara, one third of the riot that is stationed at Samara launched an attack against a Venin stronghold which lies just north to the fortress, giving this Quest squad the opportunity to sneak to Anka unnoticed since the enemy was too distracted and it was about a three hour flight like we said, from Samara to Inca, of which they saw no activity except for two easy to deflect patrols of Wyvern. This all seems a little too easy for this Quest squad. And yes, I agree, it's almost like Theophany cleared a path for them. They did however, see sparse villages with dimly lit encampments of civilians between the lands that Venin drained. Okay, are we taking Violet's word for this here or do you think that these are teeny tiny little Venin settlements? Like, even if they are civilians, do you think that there's a Venin undercover?
Lexi
I assumed it's indeed poor Emile. Citizen encampments showing how displaced they are and how out of options this is. They may have escaped the Venin invasions and attacks, but now they have nowhere to go, so it's like they're sitting ducks. Although I will say the Venin are pretty strategic with where target, so maybe they're not focusing on these little encampments as they target the bigger power sources like villages and of course cities.
Nicole
That makes a lot of sense. Our crew arrives at Anka and Woo. This place has seen better days. It looks like it's completely desiccated. The remainders of buildings and their clock tower are withered away like they're Kindling that was struck with a breeze. Within the town itself, there are crumbling buildings, mostly around two stories. And all the structures remind violations of sandcastles as well as desiccated bodies. Those are two things that don't go together. They're colorless and could crumble at any moment. But despite looking like they could crumble at any moment, some of the houses are connect to other ones across the street with sky bridges. It's almost like a overhead tunnel from one second story to another. Additionally, the streets are narrow, with only barely enough room for a wagon to pass through. Or griffins with their wings tucked in tight. This city is designed so that dragons cannot move through the streets. I feel like this is like those teeny tiny, tiny little streets in Europe where there's somehow still two ways. Even though I feel like I'm barely walking on a sidewalk. It's so scary. To top it all off, this squad has orders not to wield here unless absolutely, positively 1000% necessary. Why is that? According to new intel, wielding within Drain territory seems to draw Venin in. Wait, what? This feels so important. And definitely not the last time we will see this catch 22 on the page.
Lexi
I think it's such a cool bit of world building.
Nicole
I have a quick theory then. What if next book Violet is in a drained area and she has to wield for one reason or another. And it almost draws Xaden within his horde that he'll be in to her. Because it seems their bond has been severed by the end of this book, which I'll get to later.
Lexi
I did not get that feeling.
Nicole
Yeah, yeah, it's. She said she reaches for the bond and it's gone. She's like. It could mean that he's just super far away, but that's like her just panicked thoughts. So I think that Sigale broke the bond with Zaden and that's why she can't feel him.
Lexi
That is very possible. Yes. I guess I just never thought of that.
Nicole
It is already difficult for riders and I'm assuming flyers to wield in drained areas. Though dragons, griffins rely on the magic of the land to put into their body.
Lexi
In fact, the dragons are flying nearby over land that the dark wielders left untouched in their haste to get to Samara so that they can have access to magic.
Nicole
This is why Violet feels a rush of power pounding against her inner archives door. And she assumes that Taryn finally found some undrained area nearby. Seeing a sign that states Home of Amelia, first of the drifts. But don't worry, Grady discovered it first. Zaden, Grady, Meera, and Captain Henson all go inside to find the artifact, while Violet and Aura stand watch. And it's a little spooky out here. It's nighttime, so it's dark. The wind is starting to pick up, giving really creepy vibes. I live kind of on top of a hill, and the wind here is so loud. And sometimes at night, it's like, super, super intense, and I'll just be laying in bed, and it's scary, but I have, I bet, to snuggle me to keep me from freaking out. And they are also hundreds of miles away from the safety of the wards. So while Violet is no stranger to being beyond the wards, Aura, I'm superior to you because I stayed in the safety of Navarre. Bindhaven clearly does not have the same level of chill.
Lexi
It's such an entirely new experience for her to be beyond the wards. And we're quickly learning that being wing leader and being strong and powerful in the Quadrant does not equal on the job skill.
Nicole
Hearing a gust of wind and a glass bottle roll down the street spooks Ara to the point of preparing to wield, meaning she's probably opening the doors to her power much does. But Aura, you cannot wield unless absolutely, positively, 100% necessary because it's a beacon to the venom. Aura, you're a wing leader. In fact, you're the senior wing leader. You'd be the first to die in a horror movie. Which, quick aside, do you think the wind is natural, or do you think it's theophany? Especially because it picks up so quickly once the fire starts, and that feels like something theophany Chaos Bringer would do.
Lexi
I think it's just the wind. We also know that during this season, too, like, the weather is a little bit more unpredictable. Like, that's just part of this world. So that's what I think. It's just.
Nicole
I think it's theophany fucking with them, but that's just me. I will give Aura, like, two seconds of the benefit of the doubt. Like we mentioned, Violet has faced the Venin outside of the wards multiple times. She knows what to expect from these fights. Aura has only just learned about them mere months ago, and she's only had one battle, and there was really no time to panic or get in her head before it. They are still very unknown to her, so I don't blame her entirely for reaching for the two things that she can do to feel powerful. One, trying to put Violet in her place by flexing her Seniority, which Violet absolutely instantly shuts down. And, of course, wield her fire.
Lexi
Violet is trying to see this from Aura's perspective at first, just like we are. Like how? She asks Aura as nicely as she can if or is scared and assures her that it's healthy to be nervous. It's a little olive branch that Violet holds out to Aura. Except Aura doesn't give two shits about it. She's determined to put Violet in her place and cling to her seniority, despite Violet clearly being the more experienced one in the setting. I think that Aura is realizing just how inexperienced she is, so she's projecting her fear onto Violet. And hey, at least you tried Violet. Sometimes there's no getting through to people.
Nicole
But we have some luck. Mira has found the artifact. Very fortunate that she was the first to spot it. But more on that soon. Because just as Mira calls out her victory, a door from across the street where the four officers went in, it bursts open with an ear screeching creee, causing the skittish Aura to whip her fire out on the intruder.
Lexi
Die, Venon, Die.
Nicole
Oh, wait, it's not a Venon. It's my guy, Professor Grady. Remember those sky walkways between buildings? It looks like my guy Grady used one of them to cross. Crossed the street without Violet or Aura noticing and came out the door from the other side.
Lexi
Okay, can I just say this is not the smartest thinking ahead move of it.
Nicole
This is the guy who had the map upside down. It's okay to call him an Idot.
Lexi
When they were all on such high alert for Venin. He emerges from an unknown location without any warning. I'm not saying I would have been any smarter, because I'm sure I would have done the same thing of innocently walking out a door from where I was exploring and then getting burned alive. But still, like, even just like a little, like, knock, knock. Like, just to let him know that, or like, just to, like, give his presence? No, like, say, I'm walking out of this building. I am in this building. I don't know. I don't know.
Nicole
Or like, call out of one of the windows being like, I am coming out the door. I don't know. I feel like Aura's so on edge, she still would have been like, yeah, done.
Lexi
Probably.
Nicole
Probably. Despite Violet trying to tackle the spooked Aura to the ground. Because, remember, you're not supposed to wield. Professor Grady catches the fire of Aura's making. Violet attempts to smother the flames by grabbing Aura and her flight jacket. To cover Grady. And then Zaden attempts to smother the flames with his shadows. But they are too late. Not only did the blast char Professor Grady, making him crispy and dead, but the fire. Fire was so powerful that it blasted past Grady into the matchstick of a drained house. And ah, that wind that Lexi does not think is theophany is picking up, causing the fire to spread fast, fast, fast. I want to take a moment and say rip to my guy. Professor Grady, you may have been the biggest idiot when it came to putting together a squad, but something about you piqued our interest in Iron Flame. It most likely wasn't how you tortured Stuart students. It most likely was not how you drugged cadets against your will. It was something, though. Something about you was quite rootable. But I guess we'll never remember what it is because you died in the same way that a cadet did in the Halden woods under your watch by fire. Sucks to suck rest in Pepperonis, I guess.
Lexi
Captain Henson tries to battle the out of control flames with her wind wielding. But even the best wind wielder can't think fix this fiery disaster of a situation. By the way, Henson has low key been a Green Flag member of the Quest Squad. Grady's version since we were introduced to her. She agreed with Violet that they shouldn't go north, and even asked where Violet's dragons think they should go. She recognizes the weight that Violet pulls and seems to be pretty logical in this instance. Captain Henson is the next highest ranking officer on this task force and takes charge of the situation. I won't say that she does it extremely well because somebody still ends up dying on her way watch. But anyway, she orders Xaden to abandon trying to put out the fire so they can focus on evacuating while there's still hope of a clear path to do so. Zaden, of course, doesn't listen to her, but he does listen to Violet when she repeats the order. As a bag, he's determined to fix this fire. But Violet recognizes that's not important anymore. The only thing they need to focus on is getting the hell out of this tinderbox. Henson, Meera, Zaden and Aura are running for their lives down the narrow street to escape the blaze of fire and get to the open area where they'll have room to mount their dragons. But the situation just keeps getting worse. Wyvern are approaching with the city ablaze.
Nicole
Behind them and Wyvern in the sky. It's time to get on your dragons out in the open. First up, Mira, who after Some debate of not wanting to leave her sister behind climbs up Tiny's leg with flawless technique. Aura, you're up next, girl. But Aura is a little preoccupied with the magnitude of what havoc she has caused is surrounding her. She's feeling a little panicked and guilty for accidentally friendly firing at their leader. So as her dragon Dagal approaches to pick her up, it's safe to say she's a little distracted. She's so distracted that she does not realize it's not Degal who is swinging by. It is a wyvern. And rather than using its claw to scoop her up like Taryn does to Violet, its talent emerges somewhere in the middle of her spine, causing. Causing Aura to basically die on impact. I would like to take a moment and say, rip, Aura by, you were not liked. You will not be missed. So bye now. Something rather sus does happen. After the dead Aura gets whisked away, Captain Henson says, damn, they got here fast. To which Violet is like, that's all you have to say? This line caused me to absolutely spiral into a complete and total crack theory that Henson somehow worked with the Venin to lure them here, much like Daddy Atos did with Ressen, and we're assuming Newhall. I mean, from the beginning of the mission, when looking at the map, Henson pointed them in the direct position of the artifact. Is she just good at reading maps upside down, or did she know exactly where to go? But there's another moment, because also when Aura is preparing to get picked up by her dragon, Henson is the one who's like, go, Aura, go fucking move. Basically, then when Violet turns, tries to stop Aura because Taran says there's wyvern in the sky, Henson encourages Aura to keep going. Was Henson just trying to get people off the ground, or did she know the wyvern were underway?
Lexi
Well, she knew that the wyvern were coming, but she was also in commander mode, where it's like, now or never. You gotta go and try. Even she's not convinced or I will make it. But she's like, there's no time to worry or hesitate right now. Like, you just gotta go and hope for the best.
Nicole
But then, of course, there's the moment of quote, damn, they got here fast. Which sounds like Henson was expecting them and is marking on their speedy arrival. Or is this just a clue for us that Venom were nearby to begin with? Because the offhand dropped off the note.
Lexi
Well, we know that then are nearby in general because they had to maneuver around several patrols on their way to Inca. So I take this as the big commotion they just made will obviously attract the enemy. And Henson's realizing how fast they came. She thought they'd have a little more time before Wyvern showed up. And again, she is also inexperienced when it comes to Wyvern too. And it's like, oh, wow, okay, this. They're here. Faster than I thought. Wow, we gotta go.
Nicole
Go. Oh, okay. After hearing that, and I will say after sleeping on it, I do realize that maybe my crack theory is a little out there. And yes, I do think that Henson is just the capable one. So instead I'm going to go to my previous statement, and that is that Venin were nearby because Theophany knew they were coming. She probably saw them leave Samara. Or maybe she knew from Daddy Atos and this is where. Or maybe it was Daddy Atos. I'm not convinced Panchak was. Everyone like, Panchak was definitely a snake, but I don't think he was the snake. I think it's him and Daddy Atos and then a bunch of other people.
Lexi
Another theory is that Tokharis was working with the Venin because he most certainly knew the task force was coming here. We know that Theophany isn't trying to attack Violet and get her on her side in the situation. She left the note as I'll call it a scare tactic to prove she's a step ahead of Violet and knows what Violet's trying to do. Evil little bestie is taunting her and playing the long game.
Nicole
But I do wonder if Theophany saw the Horde leave Samara. That's when she, like Super Speedy, went to Inca, left the note, drained the artifact so that she would make sure that Violet would get it. Then I fully believe she is the one who caused the wind to pick up like crazy, causing the entire city to burn down because she loves chaos.
Lexi
But we also don't know how well she could have wielded in all that drained land. I'm convinced it was just the wind. And this is an example of lifelessness that Venon are leaving behind. Plus, again, it's mentioned several times how weather in the season is a little extra crazy. Also, I do think that Pancheck told her about what was happening and then she went. I don't think that they necessarily necessarily saw them at Samara.
Nicole
I think we'll never know because it's time to get Violet and Satan off the ground. Segale is a little busy in the sky. She's flying fast towards the Wyvern, then raking her claws into its back and basically ripping it in half. Which is pretty badass and slightly terrifying to everyone except Zaden, who is proud of his girl and smiles. I love that extra little foreshadowing that we will get at the very end of this book where he is like he will fully turn Asym Force again. And I just love that little moment where he's like, oh I love her. But with Sigail unable to get to Zaden, that leaves two options. Leave him on the ground or hey Taran, could we catch a lift? Despite being his mate's rider, Taran has no wish to carry Zaden off the battlefield. After all, dragons do not carry those who are not their own riders. He is not a horse. This is one of the first rules of dragon law. Not to mention Taran isn't too happy with Zaden right? Right now he's pissed off at him. Actually, Zaden turned Venon hurting not only Terence Ryder, but his mate as well. He does not trust the Dark one with a 10 foot pole. Also, this is speculative, but if Naolin did turn Venin, thus causing Taryn to get so pissed and break their bond and completely sever the trust with Taran's previous and only writer, him picking up Zaden is a big deal. This is not, however, Taran showing trust in Zaden as a person, but more a dragon saying I believe his life is at least worth saving, even if it's just a living little bit. Which is not something dragons normally do. So good job for Taryn and Zaden. I guess they they got a little closer than this day. So Zaden clutches Violet to his chest, begging her to hold on. He also bonds some shadows for extra assurance, but not in the fun way like we discussed last episode. As he throws his arms outward, making himself into a T position, Taran swoops down, hooks his claws under Zaden's outstretched arms and picks them both up. But oh, we are not out of the woods yet. Wyvern still circling around and Violet fumb for her conduit, holding it away from Xaden's body in desperate hope to not hurt him while she wields. Although Taryn does remind her he's been a hell of a lot closer when she's wielded before. And I love that little bit of comedy in such an action packed scene, especially with two deaths back to back, Violet snaps her power outward and strikes the Wyvern straight into its back. Just in time for Sigail to blast its corpse with fire. As an extra fuck you to the rapidly falling beast. That's enough of carrying another rider, though. Taran lands with just enough time to get Zaden off, get Violet back on, and the two pair of dragon and riders fly off into the sky. Crisis averted.
Lexi
Since the outpost at Samara is a little worse for wear, I bet they could use some redecorating. And now that the holiday decor is packed up again in my home, I feel like it leaves my house looking a little less warm and inviting. We also moved into our house less than a year ago and let's just say it really shows. But hey, nothing a little TLC can't fix. Speaking of cozy reading chairs, the reason I haven't gotten one yet is because there are too many amazing options for me to choose room. I am literally an analysis paralysis. There are 12 green velvet chairs that I am obsessed with and I literally cannot choose. We also just got this beautiful three panel wooden mountainscape and it's going to go over our bed and I'm so excited by the way our bedroom set. It's all from Wayfair. Style, every home once back at Samara, nine hours after the departure, so two hours later than the original plan, the blame game is in full force. Lieutenant Pew Pew Pew Pew. The writer patrolling the skies for Wyvern with the signet of farsight accuses Zaden of letting Grady die. Zadian is not having any of this, pinning Pew Pew Pew to the wall in his anger as he fires back that aura was a scared cadet who thought Grady was Venon. And by the way, where is Pew Pew Pew and his farsight power to stop the Wyvern from skewering her? That's a really Good. Good point. Well, they were, you know, patrolling north, but like Satan says, they were needed above the village. That's what they were supposed to be patrolling.
Nicole
Stupid.
Lexi
Pew, pew, pew. All of this to demonstrate how obviously inefficient this squad was. They don't trust each other. They don't know each other, they can't rely on each other. Grady might have trusted them individually, you know, minus Violet, Zaden, and Mira. But anyway, as a team together, they are strangers and adversaries. If we've learned anything from what we've seen with Second Squad upon as Guy, it's that you need to trust who you fight with, who you defend, who you trust to have your back. This mission may have succeeded in the most transactional terms. They got the gym after all, as Holden will point out. But it epically failed in every other sense of the mission because two of its members unnecessarily died because of inexperience and fear, as well as not patrolling literally the exact area they needed to patrol.
Nicole
With farsight, that line from Halden where it's like, but you got the artifact, so technically the mission was a success, is giving so much of the some of you may die. That's the sacrifice I am willing to make. That's the energy Halden has there.
Lexi
It's like Buzzgaeth in general. Yeah. While this all seems a little fishy about how bad the mission went, I'm still leaning toward Grady just being that inept versus being an undercover bad guy, derailing this mission on purpose. I realized soon after we recorded episode three that Zaden is clearly able to read Grady's intentions. I went off about how he should be shielding in that episode, but then it's like, wait, if Xaden could read his intention intentions, then he would pick up on this being a purposeful fail. And we would have known that from the beginning. So I'm definitely now sticking to my theory that this was a complete blunder to show how inefficient it is to team up with people you don't know or trust, and calling it out a plot device to give Violet the reins with the quest when she's just a cadet and wouldn't otherwise be able to.
Nicole
The second you said that, I was like, oh, yeah, you, you. Right. So I. I am switching sides. I'm going to decide that, yes, Grady was just a sweet I dot who did not know what he was doing, but, oh, something else is off. You know that stone that they were supposed to get, that gem, that Lexi Gem watched Earlier, that was supposed to be the color of a citrine. AKA that golden deep brown yellowish color. It is actually gray, hazy smoke hued and a cracked stone. Here's to hoping that the King of Devarelli will still accept this Venon drained gift. But when did the Venin drain this? Was it when they took over Anca left last book? Or was it just now? Because sitting right next to the necklace is a note from Theophany. Quote, Violet. Just a reminder that while I want you to come of your own free will, I'm capable of taking you whenever I wish. Why do you not ask me for the answers you so desperately seek? Tea? I love that she answers t. Like their besties.
Lexi
I love this telling you, evil villain bestie.
Nicole
Oh my God, there's. She's so ominous. I love it. A few things things from this. Number one, she technically, I guess, is capable of taking Violet whenever she wishes. But I'm kind of surprised she's not immediately going to that tactic. It would save her a lot of time.
Lexi
But I think that's the point. She isn't trying to take Violet unwillingly because she wants Violet to come willingly. So here she is, taunting her instead. Dangling the carrot in front of Violet to pique her interest. Also, you were mentioning about how she might have drained the gym when she left the note. I think that the gym was drained during the initial takeover. Because when they drain from the earth, everything drains too. So I think that was just collateral damage too. And a very powerful thing that they were draining without even like, draining that gym.
Nicole
You bring up a good point. I also think that she is very patient. Maybe more patient than I am. She's, as far as we know, immortal. So she's like, I got time.
Lexi
Yeah, it all only happens within a few months anyway, so.
Nicole
That's true.
Lexi
Yeah.
Nicole
Number two, the answers you so desperately seek. What is she referring to here? Does she know the real reason as to why they're retrieving the stone? I'm going beyond the King of Deverella needs this. This is because they need to go to Devarelli to get whatever Papa Sorrengail is hinting at. Does she know about the Papa Sorrengail hinty hints? Or does she know about his sneaky secrets? We do know she knows about her mother. How did. Why did she die? I have so many questions.
Lexi
I assume that she's referring to a cure. I also believe that Theophany knows more about Andarna's kind and the secrets of their unique magic based on centuries old tales about them and how Irids are connected to the cure for Venin. Theophany might even be referring to Viol Violet's past as partially dedicated and more about her family like you mentioned. But since Violet is focused on the one goal to save Xaden, I think that's what Theophany is taunting her with. Whether she actually has the answer to the cure is a different subject. I wonder if it all ties back to how powerful and magical Andarna is and what Theophany knows about the rumored seventh breed.
Nicole
Okay, so then actually this brings up a question. If Theophany does know about the cure, we're not saying she does or did. I guess she's dead. Would that mean that possibly the he that she keeps referring to, who we assume is General Daramor, would know about this potential cure as well? Maybe that gives me hope that I probably shouldn't have in this series. Oh, let's move on. Who's ready for a montage over the next few days after their return from Samara slash Anka, Violet has a few days before her meeting with the Scenarium, so she spends it while reading every single book on Devarelli she can find, which will come in quite handy considering how on the fly she will have to think when the kitty cats come out to play. Other than reading, Violet has been attending classes. She's modifying her saddle for long trips, which I love that she is able to do that. I really feel for the other Dragon Riders who can't. Like she can add a pillow if she wants and they're fucked. And she spends some time each day practicing her lightning wielding. In addition, she's also interrogating Jack, who's not sharing anything helpful except his asym progression and how to channeling is basically as easy as breathing beyond the wards. This is extremely troublesome for Xaden Next book. Oh dear.
Lexi
This is also good for us and Violet to know after they get the okay to go to Devarelli. Stopping in Cordon first. Violet is so scared for Xaden to be on the ground of Unwarraded Land because he could so easily channel.
Nicole
Yeah, Violet is also reading and reading and reading more topics other than Devarelly from Tokaris and the ones her father wrote. Queen Mariah is also sending tomes at Violet's request, including the Dark side of Magic Red Regalia, the Scourge of Our Times and quote the Nightmare Inducing A Study in the Anatomy of the Enemy. Pause. Because in addition to being something I desperately want to read this feels like an Easter egg. Especially since later this book. Imogen is reading a book from Queen Maria about venin and their medicinal uses. Why is no one talking about this? We get the anatomy of the Venin and we also get medicinal uses. Seriously, how is she doing all of this without audiobooks? Like, I don't mind reading multiple books at once, but this is wild. She's reading her dad's first draft about the second crowd uprising for the third time. And remember, he knows that this research could be read by anyone, but understood only by Violet. And she thinks she's finally starting to put some of the puzzle pieces together. And she's terrified that these puzzle pieces are right. This is such beautiful foreshadowing for us readers. And the very questions Norell will ask to Violet next episode. But Violet mentions quote when Verish mentioned last year that the research dealt with feather tales, I never imagined it would lead in this direction. Let's pull out the quote exactly from what Farish said about feather tales and her father's research. Last book quote, from what Colonel Atos told me, your father was writing a book on feather tales. Dragons which hadn't been seen in hundreds of years. And then you end up bonding one. This is right when Andarna goes mysteriously silent. Now, could this be feather tales that Varysh is referring to? As in like baby dragons? Or this could this be hundreds of years? Years? Like 600 years. AKA, is he referring the feather tales as the Irids? I'm getting kind of ahead of myself because that's not where Violet's mind is right now.
Lexi
That's so interesting, because Andarna doesn't realize that her kind are only feather tails. So I do think that it's more of that dragons which hadn't been seen in hundreds of years. That it's more related to Andarna. And that is why she's quiet now. So you know what? I am going back at what I thought all that with how she and Papa Soren girl were communicating. But she does know that his research dealt with her kind.
Nicole
Yeah, yeah. She definitely doesn't know about the Feathertail connection. But I do think you're right. She, meaning she and Darna knows that Papa Sor and Gail was connecting the dots with the seventh dragon den. Which we do not have confirmed in this book. But that's just what we think, Correct?
Lexi
Yes. Violet's under the impression that Krovla was trying to deal in dragons. Devarelli brokered a deal between Krovla and an un unnamed Isle. If Crova provided the Isle with assumably baby dragons feather tales. Then the unnamed Isle would provide an army. But Crovla didn't successfully steal dragons. So the deal fell through and the army pulled back its support, leaving Crovla to be defeated. From Violet's perspective and really anyone else in Avar, the concept of dealing in dragons is absolutely wild. It is unfathomable for them, like we've been talking about. But I said it last episode and I'll say it again here, Basically based on what Papa Sorrengel said in his letter about how Violet must guard this research with her life and about the weapon to defeat the Fanon, I'm convinced there is more to it that Violet doesn't understand yet while she's reading his research.
Nicole
Yes, absolutely. All of this to say in this montage. Violet is exhausted and busy, so it's almost a good thing that she and Xaden cannot do the horizontal hanky panky because she needs the energy for reading everything under the sun.
Lexi
Apparently, Violet prepares to go into a meeting with the Scenarium to discuss the revamped task force, and she's also gearing up to take charge. And she's a little bit nervous. Riddick makes a plea to be part of this Quest Squad. We know he's been asking Violet and expressing desire to go along with researching and reading everything he can from Jenia to prepare himself for this mission. But here, our dear Riddick steps it up a notch with his insistence to join Quest Squad. And when Violet's like, dude, what's the deal here? Why is this so important to you? Riddick lays it all out, making us fall even more in love with this character. Quote, bad things happen when we're not together. They need to stick together, watch over, and protect each other. Back in Fourth Wing, when Violet and Jack were about to challenge, Liam turned to Reddick and said, quote, guard her like you're me. And while I don't believe this promise from last year is the only motive for it has to join Quest Squad, he takes his commitment to step in for Liam seriously. As he notes here, some of these bad things wouldn't have happened if Liam was there watching over Violet. Now Riddick is saying it's time for him to take the place of Liam to be Violet's bodyguard, to dedicate himself to her safety. Because they wholeheartedly trust each other. Because this squad is family. Because he cares so deeply for his friend and doesn't want anything bad to happen to her or this mission.
Nicole
One of the themes of this entire series is found family. Yes, Violet loves her siblings, But Papa Sorrengail's note of, quote, trust only Mira was quite frankly wrong. He didn't know she'd grow to have this family outside of her blood relatives. Obviously, he didn't know she would be a Dragon Rider. In the Chapter 20 epigraph, Asher says, quote, perhaps the point of this is not to deny rebellion, but to only go to war with those you trust implicitly. Violet is a little headstrong sometimes and can zero in on the goal of keeping others safe. So much so that she forgets how important it is to take them with her. But in this book, she is, I'll call it, forced to unlearn that lesson. I don't know if she's fully unconsciously unlearned it. She's definitely consciously unlearned it. And thank goodness, because at least one member of her second squad year is coming with her.
Lexi
Riddick goes on to demonstrate how he's been training his signet. Now, we know that ice wielding is a pretty common signet, But Riddick is a particularly powerful wielder because he can pull water from thin air to create ice. Not many other ice wielders can do that, but here he takes his skill a step further. He's been practicing how to freeze water from the inside of something. Like fruit has been his practice. Practice object, or wyvern, as we'll see in such a badass way toward the end of this book. Like, he literally freezes the inside of a whole wyvern, which is almost as big as a dragon, to send it crashing down and cracking. And conceptually, and very terrifyingly, but very useful, another human. He can freeze their insides and kill them instantly. This ability to freeze the water inside someone's body and subsequently kill them is a major offensive power that shows how creative and open ended his signet can be. Sure, it might be common, but he hones his power, trains it to make him extra lack lethal and a terrifying opponent.
Nicole
We all know the importance of hydration, especially on these long flights. And since Element has become an absolute staple in our lives, we know for a fact that we are staying hydrated all day long, Especially on these long recording days.
Lexi
If you're familiar with us at fantasy fangirls, you know we love Element. Not only does it help you hydrate, but every sip feels like a treat. Element is a zero sugar electrolyte drink, mix and sparkle clean electrolyte water. Born from the growing body of research revealing that optimal health outcomes occur at sodium levels two to three times government recommendations. Each Sick Pack delivers a meaningful dose of electrolytes free of sugar, artificial colors or other dodgy ingredients.
Nicole
I am finally getting back into my exercise routine after being down for the count with an ankle injury, but having the grapefruit sparkling element is my favorite treat after my hit workout classes. It's the best. I love it. I know Lexi, your favorite is the citrus. I've also started going back to my man chili. I had a little break from it for a while just because I really leaned into the sparklings, but now I'm having that again and it just is so good. It's so good.

Right now Element is offering a free sample pack with any purchase. That's eight single serving packets free with any element order. This is a great way to try eight flavors or share element with a friend. Get yours@drinklmnt.com FFG this deal is only available through our link, so you have to go tO-R-I-N k l M-N-T.com FFG time for the Scenarium meeting with Violet walking into it with Riddick, Kat and her cousin who were finally introduced to Drake. And the scenario members are here, plus Daddy, Atos, M4RKim and Halden, who M4RKim is of course whispering lies to.
Nicole
All I can think of here is Wormtongue from Lord of the Rings where he's like whispering lies into the King of Rohan's ears and like so he controls him. And he does seem a little bit cleaner than Wormtongue though, so I'll give him that. But of course, these two power hungry ass hats are sitting next to the most powerful person in the room.
Lexi
We also have the remaining members of the task force here, which are Foley, Henson, and Pew Pew Pew, as well as one new addition, Captain Jarrett. Remember that Jarrett was stationed at Samara in Iron Flame and was the writer that Xaden fought and beat for the weekend pass when Violet visited the first time. And Mira is supposed to be here, but she's running late, which is kind of weird. But we're not at the Grandmama Niara stuff yet, so I'm going to guess this is not an Easter egg and she's just late.
Nicole
I assumed it was more like a plot device to give Violet more space to really step into her own, whereas Mira does tend to step in front of her a little bit. Not in a she's just in older sister protection mode.
Lexi
Halden lays out the plan. It's been a month since this became an open war with the Venin and they haven't made any real progress yet. Halden and his father King Tari are over all this dilly dallying and bickering amongst themselves. Time to make money moves. Captain Hinson is now in command of this mission to replace Captain Grady while Lieutenant Pew Pew Pew is Executive Officer. They successfully retrieved the Amalian citrine so they can leave for Devarelli in two days where Halden will meet with their king. The purpose of this meeting with King Cortland of Devarelli is to negotiate an alliance and and secure a foothold for expanding the search if the seventh Dragon Breed is not there. Halden also has his own agenda in de, but we will get to that next episode.
Nicole
There's one other thing on this new agenda. M4RKIM and Melgren are going to be searching Orisha which what the fuck. Let's go through this, shall we? Because m4rkim gives some bullshit excuse for this completely unnecessary mission. Saying that searching or Raisha is of course the first logical action considering it is the only area area we have no information on. Information on what you asshole? We'll never know because Violet interrupts him with the diss to end all disses.
Lexi
I assume the information is clues about the ear is because they don't trust Arisha not to find it, disclose it, or they just don't trust Orisha in general and this is a good excuse to go sniffing around there.
Nicole
Interesting. I took it more as like what has Oration been up to? How did they keep quiet? We know the main reason reason, but like what are some things they did while they kept quiet? Have they been doing secret research? All that kind of stuff. But before we get into Violet laying into her old mentor, it is rich to say that this is the only place they don't have information on given that the Isles exist, the Emerald Sea exists, two areas with little to no info, and one of the seats of the Scenarium is literally the head of Orisha. This is wild given that this is obviously a cover up and not the real reason they want to search what they consider enemy territory story. Let's go into a few more reasons why these asshats want to do this. They've been kept out of a secret and M4RKIM feels FOMO he is used to having all the answers after all. Maybe they also want something on the rebellion like blackmail? Blackmail is nice, but I have just one note for these idiots. You have a war to fight that you've been covering up for years and it could literally end all of humanity. And they want to get Xaden into trouble, is how I'm looking at this. This is wild. Where are your priorities?
Lexi
Maybe I'm silly, but I think it's so much bigger than Zaden. Orisha has always been out of their grasp and not really under Navar's control like the other provinces and their capitals. So this is them wanting to weasel their way into this unknown area that is still within Navarre because they think Arisha is holding a bunch of secrets that to them could be helpful for the war. I think that is also a little bit of an excuse, but for them, that's kind of top of mind, where it's like, no, like, we have to go find where there might be secrets and we have access to this place. It's a lot easier. Easier than the Isles.
Nicole
Okay, okay, okay. Building off of that, what if they believe that Erasure has some. I'm going to call it a backup plan if all goes to shit. The Venin, when Navarre is taken over, they think that Oracia might have some. Okay, this is plan B. And they want to go find out what that plan B is so they're not left in the dust like they did to poor Emile 600 years ago.
Lexi
I do agree with you that in the grand scheme of things, this internal tension is not what they should be focusing on. And yet it's fucking M4RKIM who's surprised as he scrabbles to get the upper hand where she is clearly lost.
Nicole
Violet is clearly along similar lines of thinking as Lexi and I. She snaps to M4RKIM. Quote, you do not speak. Not to me. As far as I'm concerned, you have the credibility of a drunkard and the integrity of a rat. You dare complain about missing six years of information on Erasia when you've hidden centuries of our continent's history from public knowledge. Get it, girl.
Lexi
Oh, seriously though, how dare these asshats be so upset that they're running out of time that they don't know information when it's all entirely of their own doing.
Nicole
They're so pointing fingers, being like, you did this to us. And it's like, look in the mirror, my guy. Violet, stepping into her own inner duchess, says one words in regards to this idiotic turn of events.
Lexi
No, not a Captain Henson being in command, who is out of her depths like Grady was not A to these task force members who don't have the experience or expertise to go on this mission. And again, who proved not to be reliable or Trustworthy on the Inca trip? No to searching Orisha just know all around. Violet agreed to do it leadership's way the first time, but she won't accept defeat this time as she takes charge speaking with the authority of Tarin and darn it and the Empyrean. Violet is over this half assed inexperienced strategy of leaderships and she's officially taking control whether they like it or not. She's taking a squad of her her choosing who she can trust and work well with. We've talked about how much Violet is stepping into her own this book where we're seeing Violet recognize how powerful she is and how this thrusts her into a leadership role. She might not feel like a leader at times, but in moments like this she knows when and why to take the reins to stand up to leadership who doesn't know what the fuck they're doing. And her weight equals bringing people she can fully trust who have proved themselves to work well together in a group, who have experience fighting Vettin, who can be strategic and articulate with political representation. Kat and Zaden. Obviously not Hal, but he's got a tag along anyway. I just love seeing the side of Violet after everything she's been through. More than anything, she recognizes the political sway she has because of her dragons. As Xaden will explain later, Taryn is a general among dragons and when he chose Violet, that made her a leader too. Then there's Andarna, who everyone believes is their last hope of defeating the Venin as they search for the rest of her kind. The power among the cadets shifted after threshing and that carries into the rest of their careers too. Violet is only owning that, finally understanding that these humans may be in leadership but her dragons overruled them. Which means these leaders can right off as she officially takes initiative of this.
Nicole
Quest squad with permission from Halden for Violet to just this once try it her way. Which by the way, I'm convinced he's doing this so he can play out his fantasy of her writing him doing all the work. Anyway, Violet lays it out. The new squad for the Devarelli mission will consist of Lieutenant Zaden Ryerson, Lieutenant Mira Sorrengale, Cadet Riddick Gamlin, Cadet Katrina Cordell. That's a lot of Cs. Captain Drake Cordella, Cadet Dane Atos Prince Halden Towery, and his favorite side piece, Captain Anna Winshire.
Lexi
Real quick, there has been some confusion among readers about Mira's rank because toward the end of Iron Flame she was promoted to Captain and here she's the lower rank of lieutenant. Again, this is pure speculation on my part, but I think that because she was promoted to captain at Arisha now that they're back up as Gaieth, her promotion isn't honored by Navarre, it wasn't official to Navarre, so her captain rank from being out of reacha is disregarded and she's still a lieutenant. It according to them it's also probably a little dig at her a punishment for turning Traitor.
Nicole
I 100% think it's that because some people have been like it's an editing error and I don't think so at all. I think that's exactly what it is. Yeah, let's now call out the elephant in the room that actually General Atos has no problem throwing a tantrum over this group is lower ranks technically than the previous mission. Wouldn't that make them less trained, less powerful, less prepared or filled with drama? Because apparently Kasmira states quote, you get one chance to form your own squad and you choose your ex, your current lover, the quadrant's resident smartass, two people who have tried to kill you in the past year, 1 oversaid Current lover and whatever Dane is. But no, this is a very calculated choice from our brilliant fucking woman. Zaden, Cat and Drake have been fighting against the Venin for years. They're going beyond the wards. Mira can create her own wards. That's pretty self explanatory. Plus they all have to trust each other, something the previous group definitely did not have. I will throw out that yes, Drake is in this and Violet doesn't really know him, but Cat trusts him and that's good enough for Violet. Riddick is one of the most powerful ice wielders out there, even as a second year. Plus he's dedicated to Violet's own personal safety. Dane has an insane amount of power that we're absolutely going to be talking about in a later episode, but the main reason he is going on this mission is because he speaks the Crowly language and Violet trusts him. By the way, I love that little side note that she's like, he's the only person I trust. Wow, have they come a long way. Also a fun side note when Violet goes into Dain's room in Fourth Wing and she like wraps her knee. This is right after Parapet. She sees a book on the Crowlish language. That's such a fun full circle moment. Then there's Halden because he's a necessary evil and there has to be one guard with him that he trusts, which I do agree with. Otherwise he's going with a bunch of deserters and flyers and that would not fly. Which get it? Fly flyer. What about those flyers? Cat is third in line to the throne in Poromil and thus can speak for Poromil on matters of diplomacy. And she deserves to have someone who she trusts too. Also, someone like the Griffins needs to carry these stupid baskets and it sure as hell won't be the dragons. And one Griffin can't carry two baskets and have a chance in hell of keeping up with the dragons. And of course we have Xaden because a he's the most powerful writer, slash fighter and their generation has to offer. But also because the tail is old as time. Taran and Sigail cannot be separated and in his absence, the Earl of Llewellyn. Remember Llewellyn got demoted when Zaden rose to Dukeship. Will speak in his stead taking counsel from Bodhi. Great foreshadowing for Zaden priming Bodhi to be the heir of Tyrandor. So there's obviously a lot of reasons as to why this squad makes a lot of more sense, but I also want to call out because in the series there is this theme of the new generation is more powerful and brave. We've seen this in countless fantasy stories and on Not Going to Lie, it never gets old. To me, this is one of my favorites. This squad may be younger in age, but their skill, knowledge, open mindedness and courage will take them farther than Grady's stupid squad ever would.
Lexi
Violet has this one chance to do things her way, and if she fails, then leadership will assign another commander. And at that point, if she refuses to comply, they'll nullify the terms of the second Oratio Accord, meaning Zaden would get his title taken away from him. But even with this pressure to succeed, Violet feels a rekindled sense of hope she hasn't felt in a long time. She won this political battle. Huzzah. Now they're going to go to Devarelli to meet with its king and for her to track down the merchant her father told her to. With a squad she truly trusts, she can't help but feel hopeful and excited for the future.
Nicole
For now, it is time for a road trip, because flying all the way from Bezgaeth to Cordon is a huge nope. Instead they fly fly all the way to Athene, which according to 4th Wing is only 8 hours with a normal riot. Which doesn't really make a whole lot of sense because oratia is 18 hours from bestgaeth with A normal riot. And on the map it doesn't seem like an extra 10 hours, but oh well. But wait. We have Griffins in the riot now. So yet again we have to change our algorithm. Later we learn from an exchange with Takaris that at what would take 12 hours with dragons takes Griffins 16. So luckily our new algorithm is pretty easy to figure out. If dragons in this riot go 42.6 miles per hour, remember, this is not Taren's flight speed. This is the Riot's flight speed. By this calculation with the Griffins, it would be 31.28 miles per hour. I want you to imagine traveling 16 hours going only 31 miles per hour. I would lose my goddamn mind anyway.
Lexi
I feel like I thought that they went faster than that.
Nicole
With this new miles per hour, it takes roughly 10 hours and 43 minutes to get from Bezgaeth to Athene with all of the quest squad. This stop at Athene for the first night is not just to let these poor creatures rest for flying forever. Some of them carrying baskets. The is because Violet knows they're about to go beyond the wards. And having a longer stop here gives them the ability to push as long as possible for when they're outside the wards. But wait, you might be asking in fourth wing, Athene was beyond the wards. Well, with the oration wards up, even with them not at their full capacity, we can assume those wards do reach Athene, even if it's never stated in Iron Flame. While we're on the subject of Athene, I do want want to highlight just kind of how big of a deal it is for Violet to choose this place to spend the night. This was the stopping grounds right before the resin battle. It's where her and Xaden had their first real big fight. It's extremely close to where Liam died. It's really one of the first big traumatic things that happened in this series, I'm going to say. But because we're in her inner monologue and she doesn't mention any of this, my guess is she's just so laser focused on Xaden's well being that she doesn't have space in her brain to think think about any of this.
Lexi
I have so many questions about these extremely long flights that they have. Someone asked us in our Onyx Storm Q and A box on Instagram stories a few weeks ago, how do these riders and flyers go to the bathroom on these long trips? And I've really been wondering about this ever since. Are the guys Whipping their dicks out and peeing on the side of their dragons. Do the dragons get mad if pee gets on their scales? What are the girls doing? Are they all rocking adult diapers? Or is there some kind of magic or serum at play that helps them hold their bottom bodily fluids? And what about Holden, by the way? Is he pooping in a bucket in his basket?
Nicole
God, I hope so. I'm adding this to the list of questions I want to eventually ask Rebecca Yarrows. How do they go to the bathroom on long flights? Because this is what we really need to know.
Lexi
My second question with all of this, My second biggest question. Violet dozes off in her saddle or tries not to. And it is very uncomfy. Even with even after she did some modifications. What do the writers and flyers without saddles do? They're already having to grip their mounts like their lives on it, so how could they possibly sleep or hold their seat for that long? Like, do the dragons magically lock them in periodically so they can get a bit of a break? Like, I know that they're badass, but literally doing like a grip with your thighs for 24 hours straight? I don't know if that's possible.
Nicole
Can you imagine their inner thigh muscles? Their Kegel exercises?
Lexi
Yes, I can.
Nicole
All right, moving on.
Lexi
Quest Squad is stopping in Cordon before heading to Devarelli so they can rest for the day or even two. It seems that Dakarus was not expecting them to stop here. But of course he's a good host. Especially with Navarro's Royal Highness here being one of the only major cities still standing. Because the Venin haven't ventured this far south yet. There is extra security around Cordon. I'm assuming that our rights griffins warn the Cordon griffins that they were approaching. So there wasn't this. Oh no, there's an incoming wyvern when they seen weeks.
Nicole
Okay, I can wait to know more. It is time to talk about the baskets.
Lexi
Yes, let's bask in the glory of Halden, the basket bitch.
Nicole
These baskets are four feet tall and carried in the claw of a griffin. So I am sure that this thing is super comfy and suited for prints and whatever. But all I can see is a woven wicker basket, almost like a stork basket. But all the wicker baskets I've ever seen in my life have. Have like wicker sticking out. And so I imagine it poking Halden where he has to sit with his knees tucked in and it's like digging into his stupid balls.
Lexi
I'll Be honest, that's probably not too far off from the truth. Yes, baskets can't be that big since a griffin has to carry it. By the way, if I was a griffin, I would be so pissed off at the dragons. Like, really? This would be no problem for a dragon, but they won't carry the baskets because they think that they're too good for it.
Nicole
Yeah, absolutely. I'd be furious. These baskets. Baskets are also hella awkward to get out of. As Halden stumbles out of the carrier, his pack catches probably on one of the wicker pieces sticking out. And then instead of lifting the bag out of the basket all peacefully, he's tired from being carried around in a basket, so he wrenches it out, tearing the strap clean off. I see this as he's just such a tired little prick who's feeling slightly emasculated by being in a basket and needs to like show off his big strong manliness, but not his gentle manliness because he has not even think twice about going over to Captain Windshire to help her get out of her basket. Oh my God.
Lexi
The basket visual will live rent free in my head forever. It's one of those iconic, funny moments from a book that just always keeps you giggling. It reminds me of like the Snowball fight from Acotar series and all. Like just so many memes. I love it so much. Here is Prince Halden, who has such an air of superiority and is used to being respected and in control, and he's having to be carried in an actual, actual basket. He may be of the highest nobility, but he is not a writer. And the difference in their power ranks are on full display here in such a funny way. At the end of the day, he's perceived as small, weak and inconvenient in comparison to these powerful dragon riders, which will make it all the more delicious with Rx reveal to his older brother that he's become a Dragon Rider. And this is also why Takaris is like, hey, Zaden, Halden can't show up to Devarelli like this. Like, they literally won't take himself seriously. Ah, this would be just such a glorious moment for me if I saw my douche canoe ex boyfriend in this humiliating situation. I won't lie. Especially with my super powerful dragon rider lover here to laugh with that too, after what we've seen so far from Halden again last episode where we just roasted him alive and he's just in a fucking basket. It's too perfect of a visual here. And you can tell Rebecca is just having so much fun as she gives this little wind of Violet and all of us readers.
Nicole
While some members of Quest Squad have been here before and some are used to the exorbitant wealth on display, two are looking up at their surroundings in complete gawk. Remember, in their rooms at bestgaeth, their personal touches are books or equipment or a blanket. It was even a big deal to see tapestries in Ryerson House at the beginning of Iron Flame. And here Riddick and Dane are getting slapped in the face with this grandeur. And I love that moment. Of course Halden's like of course.
Lexi
After all this flying, I bet our travelers are hungry at the end of the day. After I've spent most of my time deep in outline mode trying to dissect all the intricacies of the second equivalent uprising, I am spent. My brain cannot compute anymore and what little time and energy I have left, I want to spend it having quality time with my family. It's so important to me. The last thing I want to think about is groceries. That's why Hungry Root comes in as my hero. It's the easiest way to eat healthy for me.
Nicole
I sometimes struggle with making sure I plan an absolutely, truly balanced grocery list, but Hungaroo is like having your own personal shopper and nutritionist all wrapped into one. They take care of your weekly grocery shopping, recommending healthy groceries and meals tailored to your taste, nutrition preferences and health goals. I've recently gone gluten free because I realized my body just doesn't like gluten very much and it was so easy to make that shift with really yummy meals. They make it easy to eat high quality nutritious food and achieve any diet or health goals from anti anti inflammatory to gut friendly to gluten free or dairy free, high protein and more. Like for instance, in my Hungry Root box I had a vodka sauce penne with meatballs and it was so good. The penne was gluten free and it was delicious. The vodka sauce was awesome. I like read the ingredients. It was super clean. It was just it was so yummy. I want to have it again.

Thing'S for certain, these quests investors are exhausted from spending again 24 hours in the saddle getting from Athene to Cordon, which I have no idea how the Griffin flyers did that considering they don't like anything over eight hours. I'm guessing those breaks were just really super powerful breaks. But by countercharis leads them up the first flight of stairs. With the amount of people staying at the estate, I'm assuming from evacuating their own city, this means that Quest Squad will have to double up up in rooms. Except for you Halden, of course. You get your own quarters. To which he answers tersely, naturally. Pause because isn't he sleeping with Anna Windshire? Maybe he doesn't like bedtime pals.
Lexi
They probably have to be professional. And he also just has to think he's too good for her to actually sleep in his bed.
Nicole
Dakaris asks if they have the artifact and Violet opens her mouth to answer, but Halden steps in answering for her that yes they do. Dude, you had nothing to do with that mission. And while he's not directly taking credit, it still feels like he is. I am so with Dane on this one. He's rolling his eyes and I love that Dane. Never liked him. I am so on the Dane train right now. It's ridiculous. Back to the room assignments. They pause on the landing of the second floor and hey, we're just outside of Zaden's permanent room here. Which gives our Zaddy an idea. After all, sleeping outside on the stone that makes up the Venin fighting pit wasn't really an option because that's super suspicious and people would be like why are you outside Zaden? Remember, this stone for the fighting pits was made from land near the Dunas river in Bravik, which is covered in red from our battle maps. This is somewhere that is super drained of magic with them beyond the wards. Sleeping on something already drained of magic would definitely be the easiest option for our favorite Venon. But since that's not an option, back to Xaden's plan. Masterfully, Xaden asks his royal tired heinie what authority he, meaning Zaden, has here. Is he a duke? A professor? A writer? A lieutenant? The answer is very important. This borderline taunting of Halden, itching him closer to anger at Xaden's royal rank, causes him to agree. Obviously, Zayden, you're a fucking duke. Quote. Llewellyn made sure of it, didn't he? The second most powerful Title in the gods damn kingdom goes to a Ryerson of all bloodlines. This is so on brand for Halden. Going to someone someone's highest ranking status. Rather than seeing what Zayden is actually doing here, Zayden clarifies for the first time just making sure I'm not a professor, right? This is edging Halden closer to anger. Which brings Violet to a very troubling sentence warning Zaden that Halden is going to swing. Quote, walls, mirrors, tables, breakables, whatever is close. Really. There's a reason guards never volunteered to be assigned to Halden. The same reason Alec had been such a bully bully and Cam Aric had avoided them both as much as possible. Violet, this is rather concerning that you just dropped this so we're going back to Red Flag watch. Holden right now is being led to a conversation right into his own anger and loss of control over a situation. But I'm sure yelling at Xaden that he is indeed a ranking officer, AKA a duke helped just a little bit. This Red Flag couldn't be more blatantly obvious. And it is deeply troubling that Violet not only knows his tale telltale signs, but also knows the punchable objects that he favors. So we're gonna focus on Xaden in this scene who repeats for the second time now that just making sure I'm not a professor, right? Causing Halden to shout quote no, not a professor. Thank you Halden. That's all you needed to say. With the assurance from the prince himself that Zaden is not currently a professor at this moment and therefore not worrying about breaking Article 8, Section 1, Zaden swoops Violet into his arms and carries her into his room. They were told to double up after all. Slow clap for you Zaden. That was masterful.
Lexi
As we've noted throughout this deep dive, already we're getting more hints about Zaden's intensive sickness evolving and strengthening. Even before they enter his room. Violet asks Taryn down the bond if he'll still keep her if she has to crawl up the stairs. But it's Zaden who responds, leading Violet to believe that she said that down the wrong pathway. Could that be the case because she so tired? Yes, of course. Or it could be another hint about Xaden's signet strengthening. Then when they're alone, Violet thinks how it feels so right to be in his arms. And Zaden responds because it is. Hold up. She did not say that out loud or through their bond. But he assures her he was not reading her intentions. Violet concludes his statement is growing and I definitely agree with her. Back in chapter 18, Xaden said he picked up on a lot of things Halden was thinking and Violet's like, but that's not how your signet works. During our interview, Rebecca told us that we only know about 50% of Xaden's signet so far. So yeah, he definitely seems to be a full intense, not just a type who can read intention. And it's starting to evolve perhaps as it gains strength now that he is a Venin. Or I wonder if most intensives would be full intensive, but they can't hone their signet and develop it enough to tap into its full potential because intensics are always killed. Or like I was saying, is this unique to Zaden where it only developed into full intensic because he he is now Venin.
Nicole
I am going with he is full intensic, but because he never really trained his signet like he trained his shadows, it's starting to now manifest into be bigger on its own time rather than amped up a few years earlier because lack of training.
Lexi
That's interesting. I think that he is a full intensive and he's just now starting to kind of like tap into it. But it's not even with training. It's that he's now a Venin is accelerating the evolution of his signet.
Nicole
One thing that really stood out to me in the scene is the way that Violet is describing her full body exhaustion. In addition to feeling physically unable to climb two more flights of stairs, Violet's knees are abducting every single step. Quote, it's been a long time since I pushed myself this hard and fuck am I paying for it. All this language around her exhaustion really makes me wonder. This is in addition to her chronic illness and really loving seeing it portrayed on the page. It makes me wonder if Rebecca Yarrows wrote some of her own self into this. We know from interviews that Rebecca Yarros pushed herself to the absolute limit writing Onyx Storm. And you can really feel that limit pushing exhaustion in this section specifically. It makes me so happy that she is taking a short break before getting back into writing. And friendly reminder to everyone listening that yes, we are so excited for book four, but if you find yourself commenting on the Internet, where is book four? Or on Rebecca Rebecca's own posts, please remember how Violet explains herself here and put yourself in Violet's and Rebecca's shoes. We do not wish this kind of exhaustion on another human being.
Lexi
Takaris interrupts them in their private room as everybody tends to do with Violet and Zaden whenever they have five minutes alone together. To Karis is here to give it to Zaden straight. Prince Halden cannot arrive in Devarelli in a basket. They cannot know that he is the Basket Bitch. He's royalty. And first impressions matter. Especially when coming coming to an aisle that values rare items, shrewd trade and luxury. Like I said earlier, he will not be taken seriously. And it'll mess up the meeting with the King of Devarelli before it even begins. Takara's also gives some important advice during this conversation. King Cortland of Devarelli absconds with rare items or people. If you don't know what abscond means, like I didn't. It means to escape or to take something into hiding. So I interpret this as the king secretly taking rare items or people into his possession. Unlike Tokaris, who who simply collects them and draws them in with whatever they desire. So our crew cannot wander off from each other or advertise what rare jewels they are. Especially you, Violet. And above all else, do not make a deal you cannot keep. Do you hear that, Halden? So, new plan. Instead of letting them all, including Halden, rest a day and then going to Devarelli with him in a basket, Takara will take Halden and Captain Anna Winshire on his fastest ship to Devarelli. They'll leave within the hour, and the journey will take 22 days by ship. Meanwhile, the Griffins and dragons will arrive at Takara's estate in Devarelli 12 hours after Tokaris and Halden arrive. And it will take them 16 hours to fly to Devarelli. So the dragons, and especially the Griffins, can still get some rest before the next long flight. But now without having to carry Basket Bitch.
Nicole
Some quick travel math. If they are flying to Devarelli, which takes 16 hours, that means they are going 511.2 miles, or 822 kilometers away. At this point, I am just mapping out my own aisles.
Lexi
Almost 24 hours later, it's dawn again, as our dragon riders and Griffin flyers head toward Devarelli. And what's this? Violet loses her power from her dragons. And despite still being able to speak to Taranin and Darna through the bond, she feels small and naked, stripped of the power that has come to define her over the past year. This is vastly different, even from when she ingested the serum that cut off her connection to her dragons in Iron Flame. She described that as a muffle over the connection. Like a blanket was thrown over it. While here, there's simply no magic to draw upon, period, making her feel incomplete. Taryn is definitely feeling this lack of magic too. As he explains, dragons draw on magic for strength, and he didn't realize how much they rely on this power for themselves. And Darna doesn't say it here, but we'll learn eventually that she isn't hurting like the other dragons. With the lack of magic, we can assume it's because she is an Irid who is magic unlike the other dragons. Mera will also soon say that they lost their connection to their dragons and their power when they left the continent, which would seem to be right now. As Violet loses her magic. The big question is why does the magic work differently for geographical areas? Why is there no magic on the isles? During our interview, Rebecca explained that tectonic plates and the geography of the land play a role in the magic residing within it. So for instance, volcanic mountains produce more magic. I'll get more into the geographical magic in a later episode as we start to see it work in some areas, but for now, we can assume that the reason is based off of the terrain, and these isles, for the most part, don't have magic like the continent does.
Nicole
Something is off. Violet seems to be the only one who is able to speak to her dragons. Upon arriving in Deverelli, as Riddick and Aotrim are shouting at each other in a saliva heavy, goopy conversation, all of the riders are officially cut off from their dragons, including the dragons from each other. With one exception. Violet, Sorrengale. Mira and her wonder if this is because she got a two for one deal, or if it's because of her connection to Endarna. And while we never get the full answer in this book, I've got two theories. One, and in my opinion, the most probable, Indarna, is magic, not channeling magic from the earth like the other dragons. So being bonded to Indarna gives Violet a source of magic to then communicate with both her dragons. Why would Violet be able to talk to Taryn, though? My biggest guess is because Taryn is also connected to Andarna through a pathway. So it's almost like Andarna is giving both of them magic, which is enough to keep Violet and Taryn's pathway open too. And that's why it's not enough to give Taryn the ability to talk to Sigale, and Darna would have to be directly bonded to Sigail in order for the mates to be able to talk to each other. The other option, though, is Violet has an extra boost of magic out here because of her role with Dune and maybe possibly another God. Because at the end, the high priestess who gives Arik the stone ceremonial dagger mentions Violet having another God who carries her favor. But why wouldn't Violet be able to talk to Zaden then? I feel like if Violet was the direct source of magic, all of her mental pathways would be open. Like, for instance, Sigail and Zaden too. Which is why I'm leaning towards option one.
Lexi
Yeah. I'm convinced it's entirely because of Andarna and their bond, like you were saying there. And it's like Andarna and Violet's bond is so tightly woven with Violet and Terence bond, there's so much overlap and intertwining that it works for Violet, Taran and Andarna. Several hours later, they're arriving at the Isle of Devarelli around 9am first and foremost, it is hot here. The more south you go in this world, the hotter it is. Like around the equator on our Earth, there are endless white beaches with turquoise and aqua water. How lovely the soft green hills are rather muted with a lack of color. We'll learn this is because of a lack of magic and thus abundant light that creates the magic and vibr. I won't get into specifics about Devarelli right now because it's going to be next episode's Archives topic, but we see that the city is hidden in the trees and there is a thriving port. However, it's not all beauty here. There are a dozen large crossbows ready to strike the dragons. As Violet notes, it's quite interesting that this is an isle dedicated to peace, but they certainly are prepared for war. We're going to tuck that bit of information in our back pockets for the time being, because that is definitely going to be a theme here at Deverelli. Our crew is heading toward Dakaris Estate, which is located near a bunch of elegant manors on the mainland, each with its own dock and a ship that announces its owner's status and wealth. One of the main reasons to Carus arrived early was to let the king of Devarelli know the dragons would be arriving, because most of the shoreline is defended with those crossbows to fight against dragons.
Nicole
Tokaris comes jaunting out of his estate, which seems to be a smaller version of his one in Cordon, AKA it's fucking beautiful and it's time to get a plan together for the day in Devarelli. After arriving last night, Tokares worked quickly to secure A meeting with the prince to meet with the King of Deverelli. But that's not all. Tokaris has also worked to get the dragons and griffins hunting access in the valleys three leagues south. Remember, they work in leagues here on Deverelli, but creatures only. No humans, please. Sorry. And Darna, like Lexi said, it is currently 9am and the prince is still sleepy by. But his meeting with the with the king is not until 3pm at this meeting, Halden, you hear me? You have two goals. Which are? Number one, give the king the artifact from Anka in exchange for Quest Squad getting access to Devarelli as a stopping resting point as they search the aisles for the seventh dragon den. And goal number two. Don't piss off the king. He will. In the meantime, what will the others do? Rest. Do nothing. Beach day Riddick. You certainly need a bath.
Lexi
But hey, this isn't entirely a vacation. You hear Violet wants to visit the market to see some books. Any listener who has ever wanted to visit a bookshop while visiting a town can relate to this so much. But the truth is, Violet and co need to find the merchant Norell Anselm, who Papa Sorgel told Violet to seek out in his letter accompanying his research. In order to find Norell, they need to venture into the market, which means. Horses, please. Ah, I can't wait to get to this part. Next episode. Luckily, Halden will be meeting with the King of Dev Rally and serve as the distraction they need to go on this second secret mission on the Isle. Remember, they're here to kill two birds with one stone. I'd also like to point out Mira bringing runes to experiment with what might work here. First of all, I love how she's becoming so adept with runes. And also, we'll keep an eye throughout our deep dive of the Isle kingdoms on how these runes work as we see them come up. But for now, Mira is on a mission to see which runes work beyond the wards and which ones don't. As Violet thinks, as great as it would be for these runes to work and for them to have some sort of power wall in this area where they don't have magic. It also opens up the very scary possibility of providing magic for the people of the Isles. AKA if they can get the runes to work here, that might make the Isle people, specifically the royalty, power hungry for magic with the runes. As we will find out, they definitely do want dragons. So for now, Mira is having Violet test test a rune that is supposed to shield her from sunlight. Oh, and it's all hush, hush. Don't tell anyone else about the secret side mission, okay? We will eventually learn from these aisle trips that some runes work, and whether they work or not seems to depend on the material they're tempered into. My best guess is if the material is of the earth from the continent which innately has magic, then the runes work.
Nicole
The arrival may be lots of coordinating and moving pieces, but one person seems to be removing himself from the party ranger. Straight after landing, Zaden moved away from the group and went straight to stand at the edge of the water, looking over the ocean. This would be me, by the way. After the debrief from Takara, Violet goes to join him and is momentarily stunned so much that she closes her eyes and reopens them. Zaden's face is totally, completely relaxed, and he gives her a soft but real smile. Violet offers to have him join her for a quick nippy nap before they head off into the market to meet with Narelle. But Zayden tells her that that he'll be up in a bit. He instead wants to soak up this view a little while longer, and when he puts her hand over his heart, he asks if she can feel it beating slower. They may not be able to channel or most of them talk to their dragons, but that loss of magic also means the moment of real, true peace for Zaden. But this moment here with Zaden is really eye opening for us to see just how much that constant lure of power has been weighing on him. And especially eye opening for Violet, who, as we have noted at length has been a little bit in denial about his progression and possibility of turning more and more Venin. Imagine those moments where you're hella overstimulated, where you feel like you're being tugged in a million different directions. Now take all of those directions, amplify them, and put them in one direction. The Earth. He has not had a moment of true peace since the battle of visgaeth, which was December 21st. And now it is sometime in early March. It is three months later, and now here he is, holding his love's hand to his heart and asks if she can feel it. It's almost like I'm not crazy, right? It's still here. It's beating normally. Zaden has felt like a monster for weeks, and now he can be back to feeling just Satan. Zaden does mention something that I did find rather interesting. He says, quote, no power, no lure, no taunting reminder that I can save everyone if I just reach for it and take what. What's offered this save Everyone was a little interesting. Not Violet, not Tyrandor, it's everyone we know. At the end of the book when Zaden does finally channel and channel hard, he takes out countless Venon and Wyvern. So is he referring to polling so much that he kills the enemy? Or at least maybe can move them back into the Barrens? Given how Berwin talks to him in his dreams and how powerful Xaden is, I would not be surprised if Xaden could do it, he would have to channel a whole darn lot. Though that is a super simplified version of that theory, and I'm assuming it's probably way more complicated than that. But we've only seen a few of Zaden's dreams, so I wonder if this save everyone is just another way that Berwin talks to him and tries to sway him to the dark side. Because I did look through the dreams in Iron Flame and Onyx Storm and it's never mentioned save everyone in order to sway him. But there's another option, and this is actually what I'm leaning towards, that this save everyone language is actually save saving everyone from him. If he pulls and I'm going to say turns fully, Violet's no longer worried for him, Tyrandor gets another duke who isn't Venon, his friends aren't needing to keep an eye on him, etc. But this moment of tranquility has Violet's mind thinking how can I make him feel this way always? Violet has been so focused on her goal that I truly think this is the first moment it finally dawns on her how much Zaden has had had to work to resist this temptation. And being ever the fucking brilliant woman, she begins to think of ways to keep this temptation away, thus also helping him no longer assumably go further and further towards feminism. Remember back in Iron Flame when Tokaris wanted to offer Violet a deal? That deal was spending a few years as to Karus's Wyvern Killer in return for spending out the rest of her life with Satan, their three dragons, and all of her loved ones on an isle committed to peace. Which we can now assume is Devarelli. At the the time, it was ludicrous to think of that option. It was the coward's way out of this war, in her opinion. But now her one goal is to save Zayton, and if here he's this at peace and doesn't turn more Venin, that goal might just be met by Takara's offer.
Lexi
In this signet power segment of the episode let's move to the power of Precognition by turning our full attention to additional foreshadowing moments for the rest of this book Book as well as speculations for books four and five.
Nicole
Violet mentions a three to four day limit that riders and dragons can be apart. We've also learned this From RI in 4th Wing. This makes me very curious for Zaden next book. If Sigil is still bonded to him, is Sigail with Zaden? Is she with Taryn? Would she be the only one who feels pain because Xaden is much further venin now? If she is not with Xaden, she will feel the consequences of of them being apart. But is Zaden still bonded to Sigale? Because like I mentioned earlier, Zaden and Violet's bond sounds like it's severed at the end, so who knows. But this makes me very concerned for Sigail.
Lexi
The Duchess of Moraine proposed marriage between Zaden and her daughter not because she trusts him, but because she wants her bloodline on the Tyrandor seat. Zaden casually informs Violet it's one of about a dozen proposals since he got his title back. But don't worry Vi. Nothing to stress over, just more foreshadowing for their marriage and the political power that Violet gets at the very end of this book. She's going to rule Tyrandor now that he's too far gone as a Vinin. Of course he'd never say yes to anyone else, so no need to stress over the proposals.
Nicole
Violet Riddick sarcastically saying that Halden's guard will be super useful. Maybe not super useful, but she'll definitely be a yummy snack. Violet thinking as she's getting off Taran in Corden that she has a second pack and she's hesitant hesitant to take it off of Taryn. Then Taryn mentions it's safer if he carries it. Yes, this will be the bag that carries Indarna's eggshell that Violet will trade to King Cortland because Halden sucks and ruined their chances with the amulet. And Darna says to Violet quote, you're such a centenarian. Perhaps my kind will not be such Killjoys. Perhaps they will feast as they see fit. Oh, and Darna, sadly your kind is not what you are assuming here. Instead, they will definitely be the most peaceful of Killjoys boys imaginable. All of the foreshadowing for Cordon's eventual demise. Like there's no way this town is making it out of the series. It's one of the only cities still standing in the north end quote the palace won't stand a chance should Venon venture this far south. Whoever built it should have known that I'm just saying goodbye Courtland and I'm assuming Dakaris as well.
Lexi
Eventually Dakaris says he's already worried about one hot headed aristocrat and asks if he needs to add a second to the that worry list. AKA does he need to be worried about Zaden. Well yes, he definitely will need to worry about Halden being hot headed because things will go south very quickly with him. But also yeah, Zaden will become hot headed and kill a bunch of guards while pulling from the Source. So not going to lie to Karus's concern is very valid.
Nicole
We have donned our signet, so now let's tap into our mind of a scribe and examine the meaning of key epigraphs from this stretch of chapters.
Lexi
Chapter 19's epigraph is from the Canon of the Flyer, which I understand to be a guide for flyers at Cliffsbane Academy. This epigraph states quote the gem given to you upon graduation from Cliff Spain should always be worn close to the heart, but if you have not mastered your control, it will only amplify your downfall. This ties back to what we learn at the beginning of Fourth Wing, in which Poor Meal is known for unique crystalline gems capable of amplifying minor magics. As a fandom, we've theorized about how these gems might come into our story or already be present based on some of the gems we've seen belonging to certain people, but I love how this gives us insight into how it is tradition for a Flyer to receive a gem upon their graduation from Cliffsbane Academy. I wonder if the gem being kept close to the heart helps amplify the lesser magic because of its proximity to like the bond source between Griffin and Flyer. This epigraph includes a warning too, though. If the Flyer doesn't master their control, which I take as mastering their powers and specifically their mind gifts, then the gem will amplify their downfall. It's part of the age old cautionary tale. Your powers can be your best tool, or they can lead you to your demise if you hone and control it.
Nicole
In the chapter 22 epigraph, we see one of the three segments from Subjugated the Second Uprising of the Crovlin People by Lt. Col. Asher Sorengale. Quick side note, it doesn't say draft anywhere here, so I wonder if Violet or Decinia finally publish Asher's work, which I love that the epigraph goes as follows. Quote. It was whispered in academic circles that Corden had supplied troops and weaponry for the second Crovlin uprising. But the research has led me across the arctile ocean to Devarelli, known to our kingdom as the treacherous isle of merchants, who to my surprise, may not have been the source of the arms, but perhaps the broker. So assuming Cordon was supplying troops and weaponry to the Crovlin uprising, it makes a lot of sense considering that city is in Crovla. But here Asher is saying that Corden might not have had anything to do with it, but instead Devarelli was the one supplying the second Crowland uprising. So instead Asher is learning that Devarelli was just the go between. So who was the source giving Devarelli the army to then give to the second Crowland uprising?
Lexi
It could be Umbriel.
Nicole
I think it was unreal too, because they want eggs. And we know that the second Krevlin uprising, one of the reasons the troops backed out was because the second crowd uprising did not withhold their end of the deal. Which, speaking of which, I'm jumping ahead a little bit, but the chapter 23 epigraph. This talks about what kicked off the midnight massacre. Foreign troops disappeared and the rebels were killed in their beds by promish forces. Asher goes on in that epigraph to state that the foreign troops disappearance betrayal is odd. Quote, There's a saying in Devarelli, the word is the blood. We will learn from Paulden's major oopsie that if you break your word, you're considered dead. So Asher here is saying what part of the deal was not upheld? We will go on to learn that the deal was dragons, most likely Irid slash feather tales.
Lexi
You know, I'm thinking about it and I wouldn't even be surprised if the unnamed aisle was actually Devarelli and they are keeping hush hush because they're a kingdom of supposed peace and neutrality. So they just said they were the brokers and said that it was with an unnamed aisle, but it was actually them. Or if they truly were the broker, which by the way means the negotiator or the arranger of a deal. What if it is one of the less likely likely isles like Hidotus or Loyal? At the end of the day, the research findings are very dangerous, which I still don't feel like the puzzle pieces are all there yet that we have.
Nicole
Not at all. Now let us step into the archives where each episode Lexi educates us all on a world building topic to help us better understand this world and the magic, or at least this time the religion within it.
Lexi
Today's archives topic is an overview of the gods and gods goddesses. It's a revamped version from one of our fourth wing archives, where it was a lot less information than we have now. Consider this a foundational explanation on each of the six gods and goddesses before we venture to the aisles and get into more specifics, especially with dedication and how the gods play a role within the story. In the imperial world, people believe in or worship more than one God, not unlike the Greek or Roman pantheons. While everyone knows of all the gods and goddesses, certain ones are more prevalent and worshiped in different regions depending on the needs of that area. For example, in the Moraine Province, the closer one gets to Bestgae, the more prominent the God of death and goddess of war become, leading to their temples being disproportionately larger than other gods. Near Bisgaev, we also learn that most of the main isles are devoted to one specific God. More on that in a minute. However, there is the Isle of Devarelli, which doesn't worship any of the gods. They consider themselves neutral and are dedicated to peace, or at least they say they are. According to the Guide to Appeasing the gods, most deities allow to temple attendants to choose their timeline of service, only two require a lifetime of dedication. Dune and Loyal for both war and love change souls indefinitely. Speaking of dedication, dedicating oneself to temple work isn't just a noble pursuit. Becoming high priest or priestess is the closest anyone besides writers can get to touching the power of the gods. Exactly what that means we'll explore in a later archives. But on this note of dedication we learn that in the 200s Navarre outlawed the practice of dedication and it was banned even earlier in Poor Emile. I'm under the impression there a difference between the band practice of magical dedication like they do in Umbriel and what Papa Sor and Gail tried to do for Violet and dedicating oneself spiritually to a God or goddess, like the Guide to Appeasing the Gods text references and what the high priestess in Orisha did who dyed her hair silver verse it magically turning silver. We also know that dragons don't care about their humans gods. As Taryn says in fourth Wing quote, dragons pay no heed to your puny gods. My interpretation of this is that dragons believe themselves and their power to be superior to these gods. Last thing before we get into each of the gods in everyday life, people on the continent have expressions that invoke the God's name. Like what? In Dune's name Or there's no way under Amari's sky that Think Dune, Amari, Xenol, et cetera, et cetera. You get the idea. The phrases and usage of the different gods is pretty flexible depending on the person's personal preferences and the situation at hand. Let's walk through what we know about each of the gods and goddesses, starting with Amari, queen of the gods. Artistic depictions give her high cheekbones and an oval face. It's been stated that Rhys characteristics are similar to Amari's. There are often cherubs, which are those rosy cheeked angel children with wings depicted with Amari. They're usually carved at the feet of her statues. Places of worship for Amari that we know of include. One of the most notable landmarks in Arisha is its temple of Amari and the continent as a whole. Because the continent's people hold Amari above all the other other gods and goddesses. Whereas each of the isles worship one specific God. Moving on to the God we're most familiar with. After spending so much time at Malik, the God of death. When someone dies, their soul is sent to Malik. He has the power to condemn a soul to an eternity of torture. Malik does not do kindness or allow souls to wander about. Forms of worshiping Malik look a little different than the other gods. It is customary to burn the items of the deceased in tribute to Malik. It is considered a grave offense to keep the belongings of the dead because they belong in the beyond with their owner and Malik. This burning of belongings is traditionally done in the temple, but any fire will do. He who does not burn for Malik will be burned by Malik. But Sciath War College has a burn pit that sole purpose is to burn the belongings of dead cadets. Also, when offering to Malik, the fire should never be left unattended. We commend their souls to Malik is said out of respect for the deceased. Notable locations in tribute to Malak include a temple of Malak and Shantara. And then we also have the Bay of Malak. The only thing we know about the Bay of Malak is that it's a large body of water lying between the coasts of Krovla and the Barrens and connects to the Arctile ocean. I am so interested to see how it comes into our story with so much more world building around the gods. Then we have Dune, the goddess of strength and war. We know that her emblem is two crossed swords gripped in the center by a claw. Dedicated high priests and priestesses have this emblem Tattooed on their forehead. There is no goddess more wrathful than Dune. Entering her temple will slice the soul from any attendant who has shunned her grace. Like I mentioned at the top of this archive segment, Dune requires a lifetime of service from her attendants because war changes the soul. Notable locations we connect with Dune are the Dunas river, located in Brave Rick and Shantara's temple of Dune. The region around Buzkaya. War College, heavily favored favors Dune and Malak, so her temple is extra big here. There's also the temple of Dune and Orisha, which Violet will defend at Arryx request. And we have the Isle of Umbriel, which exclusively worships Dune. Don't worry, we will dive way more into Dune and dedication when we get to that part of the steep dive. Next up is Zanal, the God of Luck. It's believed that Zanal gives what he sees fit. It's also said that sometimes the best gift the God of Luck can give is his absence. And everyone may want want wisdom, but they need luck. Prayers to Zanal are common. When someone needs luck on their side. Showing disappointment can be seen as offensive. Notable locations for Xenol include, of course, same in Shantara, the Temple of Zenal, and the Isle of Zelna, where they exclusively worship Sanaal. Moving on, we have Loyal, the goddess of Love. This is the only other deity that requires a lifetime of service from their attendants. Because love fundamentally changes the soul. We know the least about this goddess. In fact, we didn't visit her aisle, the Isle of Loisom, where the residents exclusively worship her. Last but not least, we have Gideon, the God of Wisdom. It's important to understand that knowledge and wisdom are two different things. Scribes do not worship He Dion, like you might expect, because they are careful not to ask for what should be earned. In other words, they believe it is their own responsibility to gain wisdom, not hope for it to be given to them by the God. The God of Wisdom is the trickiest to placate. Hedion seems to only answer to those who do not pray to him. Notable areas that favor he on include the province of Caldir, where many citizens preach loyalty to the God of Wisdom. We speculate whether there is a connection to Heon Caldir and the King Tauri's nickname being King Tauri the Wise. And we have the Isle of Hedotis, which exclusively worships He Dion. And there you have it, friends. What we know about each of the gods and goddesses in this world.
Nicole
Let us close out this episode with taking flight with Our favorite moments. Sawyer, with his latest metal prosthetic leg, has rejoined classes. Yay, Sawyer. I'm so proud of you. Zaden telling Prince Halden Basket that he only asks permission of one person on the continent and Halden thought it was his dad. But embarrassing for you, Halden. As Zayden notes, it's Violet instead.
Lexi
Overall, I just love how much Satan loves Violet. Quote, if I wasn't in love with you already, I would be now. Now. It's just so cute how turned on they get when each other takes charge of situations. I know whenever Mira is on the page. I love how much of a protective big sister she is. Even a little show don't tell ways. Like when Violet goes off on M4RKIM, Mira, quote, shifts her hand on the pommel of her sword. Big sis is ready to protect her little sister if anything goes south after that major diss. One of my favorite ridic lines I kept the inside thoughts inside. And that's exactly how I picture him saying it. Like I kept the inside my thoughts inside.
Nicole
So proud of himself. During the meeting with the scenario, Zaden might look bored, but quote, the shadows around him have sharp edges that contrast the blurred ones down the table. I love this detail that in his anger the shadows are like. I love that every morsel out of the Drake and Mira officially meeting scene from him being all cocky to her kneeing him in the balls. Like what a good meet. Cute. I will say this does put a huge wrench in my the flyers attacked Montserrat were bad, and working with the Navarians on the inside to take down the wards. If you listen to our bonus episode all about Xaden's POV chapter 27, you know what I'm talking about. If you don't listen to that episode, you'll know what I'm talking about. Because it turns out that Drake was actually part of this mission. So I guess. I guess I'm going back on that theory.
Lexi
I love Mira and Drake so much, like they might be my new favorite ship of the series. Very closely followed by Dane and Sloan.
Nicole
And Darnic getting a lecture from Taran about picking up her tail. Quote, where do you think we are? The Veil Leaving Andarna to blast a short stream of fire at Taryn's legs and he says, quote I'm not dignifying that with a response. Then later when Andarna mentions wanting food AKA Mammoth Red horned tortoise and Taryn says no because the shell will get stuck in her teeth and based on his get back Here we can assume that she didn't give a fuck and ran off to get snacks instead. Speaking of snacks. And Darna wanted to take a nibble out of dolphins. No. And Darna, fun fact. I love dolphins. I used to have a room themed with dolphins and I counted them because that's what I was doing when I was super cool and in middle school. And I counted how many I had in there and 600 was the answer. So I'm very glad that Violet said they're too pretty to be a snack. When the dragons land in Deverelli, there's a guard who screams and runs back into the house at the sight of the dragons, which is just delicious. And then of course, Riddick and Iotron screaming at each other like the what did you say? All I can think of is in the chocolate episode of spongebob where there's the woman, the old worm in the chair. She goes, what? What did you say? And of course, Iotrom roars so loud that he gets Riddick covered in goopy saliva. Gross. Indeed.
Lexi
I love seeing how these dragons and riders are trying to interact with each other when they can't understand one another, as sad and frustrating as it must be. But leave it to Ayatron and Riddick to bring humor into the situation. Yes.
Nicole
We did it.
Lexi

Fantasy Fangirls Podcast - Episode 4 Summary: Onyx Storm – Chapters 19-22
Release Date: February 24, 2025
In Episode 4 of the Fantasy Fangirls podcast, sisters Nicole and Lexi delve deep into Chapters 19 through 22 of "Onyx Storm" by Rebecca Yarros. This detailed analysis covers chapter summaries, key insights, foreshadowing elements, character developments, and intricate lore explorations, providing both fans and newcomers with a comprehensive understanding of the story's progression.
Nicole and Lexi begin by emphasizing their dedication to strong female main characters (FMCs) and issuing a spoiler warning for the entire Empyrean series. They stress that the discussions will contain spoilers beyond just Chapters 19-22, covering themes, lore, and theories from all books in the series.
[02:23] Nicole: "So if you don't know that we finally get to say goodbye to Aura Freaking by Haven, then please go finish Onyx Storm. We will be here when you're done."
Nicole provides a concise summary of the events spanning Chapters 19-22:
Chapter 19: The Quest Squad, led by Grady, seeks the Emilian Citrine in the desiccated town of Anka. Their mission is jeopardized when Grady mishandles the situation, leading to arson that forces the team to flee, resulting in the loss of Aura.
[05:01] Nicole: "After fighting off the Wyvern, the remaining task force members make it back with the citrine. And a note. A note from Theophany."
Chapter 20: Violet faces bureaucratic challenges within the Scenarium, successfully advocating for the formation of Quest Squad under her leadership. Meera makes her own selections, hinting at future tensions.
Chapter 21: The team’s journey to Takara is delayed due to Halden’s indecisiveness. Glory proposes an alternative plan to sail to Devarelli, where the winged members can rendezvous.
Chapter 22: Upon landing at Tokaris’ summer home in Devarelli, the squad encounters unexpected hostility. A tragic mishap leads to the deaths of Professor Grady and Aura, escalating tensions and foreshadowing future conflicts.
Lexi and Nicole engage in an in-depth discussion about the implications of the squad's mission failures and the evolving dynamics among its members:
Grady’s Incompetence: The duo critiques Grady's leadership and logistical errors, suggesting that his actions may be the primary cause of the mission's downfall rather than any covert sabotage.
[12:54] Nicole: "Grady, too many of these people really don't like each other, and it's predominantly filled by Nevarian loyalists, making it a clear divide between them and the Oration Riders."
Aurora’s Downfall: The accidental death of Aura raises questions about the squad’s cohesion and the dangers of wielding power without adequate control.
[30:54] Nicole: "Aura, you're a wing leader. In fact, you're the senior wing leader. You'd be the first to die in a horror movie."
Henson’s Role: Captain Henson’s leadership during the crisis is scrutinized, with theories suggesting potential collusion with antagonistic forces or merely highlighting her inexperience.
[36:45] Lexi: "But we have Griffins in the riot now. So yet again we have to change our algorithm."
This segment delves into the intricate lore of the Empyrean world, focusing on magical artifacts and ancient traditions:
Emilian Citrine: The significance of the Citrine as a lesser magic amplifier, its historical ties to the First Drift, and its symbolic representation of joy and abundance are explored.
[09:12] Lexi: "As we Learned in Chapter 19's epigraph quote, the gem given to you upon graduation from Cliff Spain should always be worn close to your heart."
Dragon-Rider Bonds: The critical nature of the bond between riders and dragons is examined, including the fatal consequences of prolonged separation.
[20:34] Nicole: "There is a three to four day limit that riders can physically be separated from their dragons before they begin suffering the fatal consequences."
Lexi and Nicole analyze the evolving magic system within the series, particularly focusing on Zaden's precognitive abilities and the geographical influence on magic:
Zaden's Evolving Signet: The potential expansion of Zaden's precognition, especially in his transformation into a Venin, is discussed with theories on how his magic is both a curse and a tool.
[97:55] Nicole: "Chapter 19's epigraph is from the Canon of the Flyer... Your powers can be your best tool, or they can lead you to your demise if you hone and control it."
Geographical Magic Variance: The influence of the land's geography on magic, explaining why areas like the Isles lack magic, while volcanic regions are magic-rich.
[89:38] Lexi: "We are getting more hints about how magic works in some geographic areas based on Rebecca Yarros' explanations."
In this foundational segment, Lexi provides an extensive overview of the pantheon within the Empyrean universe:
Amari, Queen of the Gods: Central deity worshipped across the continent, associated with cherubs and artistic depictions.
Malak, God of Death: Oversees the afterlife, mandates the burning of the deceased’s belongings, and enforces strict tributes.
Dune, Goddess of Strength and War: Highly wrathful, requires lifetime dedication from her followers, and associated with major war sites like the Dunas River.
Zanal, God of Luck: Grants luck selectively, with its presence sometimes felt as an absence.
Loyal, Goddess of Love: Requires lifetime service, with limited lore explored in this episode.
Gideon, God of Wisdom: Encourages the pursuit of wisdom independently, dismissing external worship.
[100:34] Lexi: "In the imperial world, people believe in or worship more than one God, not unlike the Greek or Roman pantheons."
Nicole and Lexi share their favorite moments from the chapters, highlighting character interactions and humorous incidents:
Halden’s Basket Incident: The visual and comedic mishap of Prince Halden being carried in a cumbersome basket by a griffin becomes a memorable highlight.
[73:13] Nicole: "These baskets are four feet tall and carried in the claw of a griffin. So I am sure that this thing is super comfy and suited for prints and whatever."
Violet and Zaden's Bond: The tender moment between Violet and Zaden showcases their deepening relationship amidst the turmoil.
[83:45] Nicole: "Quick, slow clap for you Zaden. That was masterful."
