Courtney Cox
Hi, come in. Welcome to Fashion Neurosis. Courtney Cox.
Bella Hadid
Thank you. So nice to be here.
Courtney Cox
It's great to have you on the couch. Can I ask you, why did you choose what you're wearing today?
Bella Hadid
Well, you know, I live in Los Angeles and I'm the kind of person that I don't care if I go someplace for a month, a week, a day. I will never, ever check my luggage. So I really plan out. Okay. If I brought this sweater, could I wear it more than once? If I just change the pants, I'm the most efficient packer. So I wore this today because it's loose, kind of jet lagged and tired. I chose it because these pants are so thin. You can fold them up this big. So I just chose it because it was easy.
Courtney Cox
You are literally the opposite of me. When I go somewhere for the weekend or a month, I take the same enormous suitcase that I can almost never fit everything in. I'm like an anxious packer. And I think when we were children, we traveled a lot and we had very little. So now I just always want to take everything and I've just given into it.
Bella Hadid
So you just know you're going to have to.
Courtney Cox
I love it. I just think, yep, in it goes.
Bella Hadid
We're going to have to discuss that, Bella, because if we travel together, you're going to be dead weight to me. I got to get in. I got to get out. Coco packs so much. Johnny packs so much. I might not even wear all the clothes that I brought. And I might have only. I may have only brought, like four outfits. I'm. I'm efficient.
Courtney Cox
Well, I'm in awe because that's really. That's a lot about security. I think it's more than just efficiency. It seems to, because I know I'm not going to wear the stuff, but I still have to take it with me. Yeah, I want to know it's there.
Bella Hadid
Yeah. I think mine's stupidity, actually.
Courtney Cox
But either way, I don't think anything to do with clothing is stupidity. I think it's had a bad rap and it's actually incredibly useful. And it's like intelligence. Do you remember a piece of clothing that ever seemed to bestow almost magical qualities on either you or somebody else? Something that seemed really perfect?
Bella Hadid
Well, I mean, starting from when I was a kid. I mean, it's going to sound really crazy, but I was the youngest of four kids and I always got the hand me downs and I wanted to have my own things, I wanted my own clothes, and I saved up money to buy a pair of jeans that had red piping down the side. I mean, there were. I don't know if you have Kmart over here, but. No, there was. It was like, I can't think of a store that you have. But it didn't matter. I saved up. I wanted them so bad. So to me, they were magical. It cost me enough money to where, you know, I had to. I worked at this place when I was a kid, calling out of the phone book to. For this foundation, and I got them. So I felt really magical when I wore them to school. But since then, if you're talking about more now, I don't know. I just love when I see people that are able to put things together so, like, effortlessly, whether it's a beautiful Rick Owens skirt and a Bella Freud jacket, just the way people can mix things. Miriam, my stylist, who I met you through, Mariam Malikpour, she does that. Just. Everything's effortless. I walk in and say, well, just take it off. Whatever you're wearing, take it off, because I'm gonna have it now.
Courtney Cox
Maryam dresses like. I mean, she dresses like one of those amazing women from, you know, the 70s, but so glamorous and so chic, but it's quite rock and roll as well. She's got this amazing hair and, oh, yeah, she's just got a great attitude.
Bella Hadid
I remember because. Oh, talking about magical, I will say I walked into the store one day and you were wearing white cords and a white turtleneck. Just cashmere turtleneck, nothing on it. And I went, okay, I have to have that outfit. And I bugged you. And I bugged you to make me some pants. You know, the thin cords.
Courtney Cox
Yes. Did I make them for you?
Bella Hadid
You did. And now I want another pair because, you know, you gain weight, you lose weight, you take them up, they're too short. So another magical outfit that I saw, someone was wearing a Rick Owens skirt with actually a Bella Freud jacket. And I copied it. I got the exact same thing, the same camisole. I had the jacket and I love the skirt so much and I love his stuff, I love his furniture, I love everything about him. But I am not a girl that can wear bias cut things. So that is the bummer. And I will try. I'll buy something in the bias cut, I will have it sewn, I will pull it down because my body's really long. And I hate to say this on camera because people don't realize how long my body is and how short my legs are, but bias cut's tough. I tell you, it is really tough.
Courtney Cox
I'm the same. In fact, I can't wear bias cut. I have a similar proportion to you. And when you came into my shop and I was finding things, I suddenly realized that everything that suited me suited you. And then I felt so excited because I knew what to suggest. And then when I said, like where this pale blue with this red, it looks surprising. I don't know why it works, but it works. And it did. But even though you have these amazing blue eyes and I've got dark browns, but there are things that I started to think, oh, yeah, I think I can, you know, suggest things like, that's good to know.
Bella Hadid
So now I can just ask you.
Courtney Cox
Yes, you could say, I didn't know.
Bella Hadid
You had a long body. That's actually really helpful.
Courtney Cox
Well, it's very interesting, this whole thing of how you dress and why you choose what to wear. Because a lot of my clothes that I decided to wear or chose were about disguising because I was so self conscious. Now I'm older, I don't care. I feel thrilled to have like my body. But when I was younger I had so many hang ups and I just was so exacting and dismayed by the lack of, you know, regularity. But it actually has been quite useful in I've been able to kind of make proportions that I think are really flattering and I like them anyway and I think they do a job. And I was gonna ask you, like when you dress, are you looking to hide or are you looking to reveal?
Bella Hadid
Well, that's interesting because. Well, first of all, your clothes, the reason why it's perfect because you can kind of hide within your suits or your dresses, but they fit. So you can also show off your figure. So, you know, you can wear a sexy top and keep your jackets open or your dress. I think they make me feel so good. But just in general, I used to hide my body and I think that you're right. As I get older, I kind of feel more comfortable. I don't mean showing my skin because there are parts of my skin that I don't want anyone to see. But I don't know, there's something freeing as you get older. I don't know, I'm more comfortable in my. I don't want to say skin, but in my body, just the shape of it. I work out more or I don't eat the same kind of foods that I used to. Whatever it is, I feel more confident and I think I can take more risks and brighter colors. And I think I've changed in that way. I used to be more insecure and I don't feel that way anymore.
Courtney Cox
Yeah, I find the same. And it's so much fun. It's, you know, I feel like there is no time to lose now. So don't just hide under a leaf, you know, flaunt it. You know, have fun. And I mean, I'm quite sort of restrained anyway in my demeanor. But within that, you know, I think just dress up a bit more and I have a better time. I just have a better time within myself. And it's about enjoyment really, isn't it? Instead of fear of how it might be wrong or I might show something.
Bella Hadid
That's so funny because you do, you are, you're kind of quiet, not reserved. But if you look around your home, you're very bright. I just bought this suit from you that it's this. I don't know the color but it's, it's definitely out of my wheelhouse and out really out of my comfort zone. But I thought it's such a beautiful color and I'll have to ask you what colors to wear with it. But it's really low waisted and it's. You're just very. Your clothes can be out there, but they're specifically just cool well, that's a.
Courtney Cox
Great compliment coming from you. You seem so spontaneous and you're so funny and charming. And I wondered how, like, when you're, like, getting an outfit together, where do you start from? Where do you kind of. The first thing you start with that sort of switches you on?
Bella Hadid
Well, it just depends. The other day I was. I had to go to a book party. Like someone was launching a book. And I'm like, what do you wear to a book party? Is that a suit? It's not my book, is it? And I just kind of go with first. Is it my crowd? Do I feel comfortable? Or am I not gonna know anybody? And I'm just doing it. Cause I told somebody I would. And it's nice to show up for people. So where am I gonna f. And I was going to wear a bright green, really bright Bella Freud dress. And I went, you know what? Love Bella just won't feel comfortable. Because it was old Hollywood. Like, not just old as an age, but people that had been in this business, my business for so long. I thought, oh, yeah, you know what? I'm just going to have to disappear. But you know what? I didn't. I wore a white suit. I wore a Bella Freud. Oh, my God. Now I'm just, like, talking about you the whole time. I do have other clothes, but I gotta be honest. I'm not. I don't have a million things. I really don't. I get rid of stuff. I'm not a pack rat. I don't like to save things. I don't know why I like to clean out. But I felt really. I felt good. I wore all cream. And even though I stood out cause it wasn't black. I felt like I was hiding within my own comfort zone.
Courtney Cox
That's a very good expression, actually. All cream is very old Hollywood, too. It's like Marlene Dietrich might have worn that. And it's cool. I can imagine.
Bella Hadid
I think I might have been. Well, me and my friend, which I didn't know she was wearing that, were the only two people in all white. So it was good.
Courtney Cox
I find it very disconcerting in LA because people wear almost like rags, almost. You know, I mean, everything costs a fortune, but it's a tattered T shirt with frayed jeans. And when you wear anything more than that, it's like you're an object of fascination and curiosity. And that is really disconcerting in terms of, like, what to wear.
Bella Hadid
I do have my pair of tattered jeans. You know, the ones with the holes in the knees as if you've crawled the whole way around town and that happened, I don't get it. But every time you've been down to pick something up, they get more ripped, and then they just like, okay, no one wants to see this much of my knee, but, you know, I still wear.
Courtney Cox
I like those type of things. Do you remember the first time you became aware of what it was that someone wore that you found attractive?
Bella Hadid
I would say, I think that when people have confidence and they walk into a room, I can't think specifically of. I mean, a specific outfit, except for, like, every single thing that Miriam wears, I adore. I think it's all about confidence. You know, if you walk in, whether it's tattered or whether it's got pills on the sweater or. It doesn't matter. People who own it, I just find that really attractive. And I remember that. And it doesn't matter where it's from. It doesn't matter if it's. If you're mixing Zara with Chanel. Marion, when I first I was. It was a Thanksgiving, and it was the first Thanksgiving that I'd spent with my partner Johnny. And she put me in a Zara dress. Like, it was plaid with lace. And then she had some funky boots. I don't know what it was, and some blazer. And I was like, this is so not me. But I felt great in it. Like, I was impressed with myself. I felt sexy. I felt cool. And I actually saved that dress. I will never wear it again. But there's something about it that I was kind of in awe of myself that day.
Courtney Cox
And he loved it.
Bella Hadid
Oh, yeah. Well, I don't think he's a fashion person at all. I mean, he finds a pair of shoes that's comfortable. They can be all birds. I mean, look, let's now be clear. All birds are comfortable. But is that a fashion statement? No. Does he have 500 pairs of the shoes? Yes. I'm like, can't we find some shoes that don't? I mean, I know you don't walk all over the city. You do have a car, so let's have some car shoes. You can have the comfortable allbirds. But no, I think he thought I was pretty cool, though, at that point. I think he thinks everything I did was cool. Now maybe not so much.
Courtney Cox
Oh, you're still going strong. Obviously, you're doing everything good.
Bella Hadid
Yeah, sure thing. Hey, you sold that car yet? Yeah, sold it to Carvana. Oh, I thought you were selling to that guy. The guy who wanted to pay me in foreign currency. No interest over 36 months?
Courtney Cox
Yeah.
Bella Hadid
No. Carvana gave me an offer in minutes, picked it up and paid me on the spot. It was so convenient. Just like that.
Courtney Cox
Yeah.
Bella Hadid
No hassle? None. That is super convenient. Sell your car to Carvana and swap hassle for convenience. Pickup fees may apply.
Courtney Cox
Was there anything that you wore for the first time to deliberately invite disapproval? And if you did do that, did it make you feel free or anxious? And, like, were you a naughty girl or were you quite a good girl?
Bella Hadid
Well, the naughty part. I think I might be a little more naughty than people might assume. I'm. I don't know about in my clothes. Sometimes I'll go out on a limb, and sometimes I wear things I think, oh, I don't know, this feels a little like I'm bringing attention to myself. But there's something that feels good about it. I think I am a little naughtier. It probably would be canceled if you really knew my personality. I always go, I'll say something. I'll go, shit, am I gonna be canceled? Then I just like, it's a joke. It's a joke. I don't know. I think humor, if it doesn't offend me, probably doesn't make me laugh. I'm just that, you know, Ricky Gervais is one of my. I just think he is so fucking funny and everything he says is so inappropriate. But that's just my sense of humor.
Courtney Cox
Yeah, well, I think it's most people's, actually. It's so funny and intelligent, so it's kind of irresistible. But, you know, and I mean, you're so popular and beloved. I mean, when I was thinking about you while you were on your way and thinking, here we have this expression, the nation's sweetheart or America's sweetheart. Yeah. And, you know, everyone, like at work, when I was talking, saying I was going to see you and you were going to do fashion neurosis today, and I mean, the excitement and it was so great and it was so much fun, and everyone just lightened up and brightened up at the thought of you. And you. You just seemed to handle that. You wear that very lightly, and in the way you dress, it's like, it must be quite a lot of pressure. And I wondered, like, when you're on the red carpet, do you wear different things? Do you feel like you alter. You go into a sort of alter ego to handle that, that focus when that happens?
Bella Hadid
That's an. That's really interesting question, and thank you for that compliment. I do feel really lucky. I especially feel Lucky that as I'm getting older, the show that made me the girl next door kind of character is still running. It's still on, like, multiple times during the day. And the fact that there are fans that are 10 years old and 60 years old is pretty remarkable, and I feel very lucky about that. I think that's just me, too. I'm from Alabama. I feel really comfortable, and I don't really think about, oh, I'm going out, and maybe a paparazzi might see me, or. I mean, Jennifer always laughs at me, like, why would you wear that? Even my workout clothes are so not thought out. They're the ugliest clothes in the world, but they're comfortable. And I don't feel like changing before I leave, so I just don't think about it. And then I look at the picture later and go, yeah, that's probably a bad, bad idea. But when I go on a red carpet, it is a time to, you know, to really be, you know, to go out on a limb or do something you wouldn't normally do. And I have to admit, I have to have someone help me with that. It's always Miriam. She always finds something different that I would never. I wouldn't have it in my closet. I would have to get it for that event. And then also, because I am a little just girl from Alabama, I don't know how to stand. I just learned how to actually pose. Not great at it, but I learned from. Do you know Tan France?
Courtney Cox
Yes.
Bella Hadid
Okay. I love that guy. He's such a sweet person. And he was over at my house one day, and I said, tan. How do I know how to do a pose for the red carpet? Some people just know how to do it. They turn. They have the right angle. I was looking at Instagram, and I noticed that Victoria Beckham, she has a pose. And you kind of know the way, like, I would look at her. She has a great body. She's really pretty. And I watch you just see people that. They know how to do it. Well, Tan taught me how to put one leg in front of the other kind of on your toes a little bit, just so you're. You look. I'm not. I can't do it when I'm sitting down.
Courtney Cox
But, like, positioning your body. Yeah.
Bella Hadid
There's a way. He said, just stand like this, and it's going to be better than any way you've ever stood. And so it was helpful.
Courtney Cox
God, what a great person to get a lesson from.
Bella Hadid
I know, right?
Courtney Cox
It's such an interesting thing. To think about and that no one would imagine that like. Like looking at someone on a red carpet, that how you stand is.
Bella Hadid
It's so important.
Courtney Cox
Yeah.
Bella Hadid
I mean, I slouch and I gotta remember to put my shoulders back. Kind of have to arch your back a little bit. I just stand. I mean, it's not. It's something I always say to Coco. Coco, put your shoulders back. Stand up straight. Imagine there's a string. That whole thing. You've got a shot. I don't have a shot anymore. This is it. This is the way I stand. Nobody. It doesn't look good. She has a shot to actually try. And it may incorporate into a permanent stance, but it's hard. Standing straight is hard. You have a good posture, though.
Courtney Cox
Yeah. I was obsessed with posture when I was a child. I was obsessed with the Spartans in Greek mythology, and they were very big on gymnastics and, you know, kind of rigor. And I became obsessed with very sort of strict regimes, which I suppose it was a way of, like, handling stuff, but I kind of never gave it up. So I even noticed that I have quite good posture.
Bella Hadid
And no one told you to. You didn't have.
Courtney Cox
No, no one really told me to do anything like that. But I. I can also. I'm very slouchy, and I love slouching. And I can sleep anywhere. I can sleep on a chair. I can curl up into a small place and fall asleep if I have to. That's not necessarily very good for clothes. How did your parents dress, and were you influenced by her or by him or my dad?
Bella Hadid
The only thing that I have of my dad since he died is a belt. And it is not a cool belt. I think it's got, like, some horror. It's. Oh. Got some horse hair or cowhide and little cutouts. I don't know, but it just reminds me of him. He wore polyester pants, golf shirts that were also polyester. Terrible style. My mom always looks sophisticated, but. Yeah, I don't. I. I don't think I liked her style. Yeah, I didn't. I don't think I do. She's also not with us, but why do people say that with us? I mean, you didn't even know her. With us, the planet, the world. She's no longer with me now anyway.
Courtney Cox
I know. I feel almost like I've become more and more. She's dead now.
Bella Hadid
I mean. Yeah. But she's gone. Yeah.
Courtney Cox
Yeah.
Bella Hadid
But I do miss her. Yeah. My mom was very sophisticated in Alabama. We can be sophisticated in Alabama.
Courtney Cox
I bet. Much more Kind of. So almost than in a city where you're just more kind of casual. But.
Bella Hadid
Well, I'm from Mountain Brook, this area that likens itself to what's just very. I mean, that's cosmopolitan for Alabama.
Courtney Cox
And if you fancy someone but you don't like something they're wearing, does it kill your attraction to them?
Bella Hadid
It doesn't kill the attraction, but I might look at them and think they're really attractive. I probably in my mind already know that I'll try to ease in some other look, you know, if it's someone I was gonna spend time with. I am kind of a fixer. I mean, I'm definitely type A, but I don't fancy myself as controlling. But I'm sure I am. But I'd somehow get in a different look going at some point.
Courtney Cox
That's. Start with the gift point, actually, because I often think of that. I think, oh, I wish I could get them into Margiela Men's where I could find something like really low key that just enhanced them a bit better. Because I quite like men who don't dress, you know, who don't dress fashionably. So then if they're dressing quite badly, I think I could just get like a khaki Margiela shirt. But apart from it costing a fortune, you know, people don't like to be changed.
Bella Hadid
Yeah, you just need to. Yeah, that's what I do. I just start with the first nice sweater and then they go, this is. I like that. Then you just keep buying the gifts until that's their wardrobe.
Courtney Cox
Well, Johnny looks pretty cool. Has he always looked?
Bella Hadid
That's 10 years of work.
Courtney Cox
Well, excellent work. Did you feel happy with your body when it changed from girl to adult? And did you change the way you dress? Did you decide what you wanted to show then? Or was there a bit of your body that you wanted to show? Like, I always remember thinking, because I read loads of novels, 19th century novels, and they were always talking about the back of the neck and the ankle and all this stuff in Jane Austen. So I was quite curious about that. And I wondered if you had. What was your transition like?
Bella Hadid
Yeah, I find that my body has changed so much. I think I. I used to be self conscious. I thought I had really wide hips and I had wider hips. I don't know what happened. Or maybe I still do and I just don't know. But I used to have wider hips. I would always want to hide that. Like, I don't like when pockets are too far apart on pants. I always dream that I'll make the perfect jean because I don't like really small pockets and I don't like when they're too far. And I, I'm very, very specific with jeans. But I think I still feel that way. But I'm just. I don't know, I think when my body changed to also. Not that, I mean, this is really personal, but I used to have implants. I used to love having boobs, even though the first time I did it, they were too big. And then I had them removed and had smaller ones put in because whenever you get boobs, your boobs done. The doctors, I feel like they always think, oh, they don't know what they want. They want big ones. They're just gonna want them to be bigger. And I remember being as you go under, just wanna be. You fall asleep. I woke up and I had this giant C boobs. And I was at this time pretty small, thin. And I couldn't believe it. I was like, oh, no. And if you look at me in Ace Ventura, I was really thin and I had these knockers. And so I thought, okay, well, I kind of was feeling good about it for a while. I took them down, I went to a large B. But I think I was okay showing that part of myself for a while. And then I thought, you know what? I don't want that. And I got rid of my implants and now I love being pretty flat chested. I kind of like to show that off now. I don't know why.
Courtney Cox
Yeah, I've got a friend who had exactly the same experience. She. She had implants and when she woke up, he said, oh, we've just popped a C in instead of a B. And she had the same kind of. It was like her whole wardrobe had to change.
Bella Hadid
Yeah, I mean, you know, you're not born that way when you're that small of a frame. They were just. Yeah, I get that was. That's annoying. They don't. Doctors don't necessarily know better.
Courtney Cox
No, they. I mean, when I was pregnant was the only time I vaguely had more, more breasts than my normal kind of a. Or whatever. But it really changed my whole reflect. My face changed because the things I liked to wear, which were boyish shirts, I looked a bit frumpy and matronly in these shirt things like a kind of lady politician or something, which is my worst look. So, yeah. Gosh, boobs. Well, they are fun. It must have been quite fun having boobs for.
Bella Hadid
I felt sexy for a little bit.
Courtney Cox
That's really exciting having this extra bit of flesh. It's like now I just think flesh is the most wonderful thing ever. And in fact, how do you feel about being naked? And if you can't be naked, what piece do you keep on that makes you feel naked?
Bella Hadid
I'm not modest at all, so I actually feel pretty comfortable being naked. I used to look better naked for sure, but I probably embarrass people because I just don't feel modest where if someone comes in and I'm about to take a shower, I might just say, oh, sorry, some of this doesn't look right, I'm sure, but I don't know why I feel okay.
Courtney Cox
That's really nice, though, because I'm the opposite. I always feel incredibly. I'm never naked.
Bella Hadid
Oh, really?
Courtney Cox
All through my marriage, I was married for 23 years. I barely was naked. And I think it was partly to do. When I was growing up, there was like a period in the 70s where some, like, studenty types used to come round to our house and just like, strip off or be semi naked. And I felt really furious about it. I felt like it was an invasion of my privacy that they were just walking around like this. And it's made me. I mean, I don't know if it was that, but I've always. I always keep something on. Not sort of. And then I notice, like, oh, I seem to always keep something on. And I quite like the bit, whatever it is, I'm going to keep on. And it sort of makes me feel more naked almost.
Bella Hadid
Oh, that's interesting. I. I always will keep on. I don't know what you call them here, but underwear. Do you call them that? Yeah, I think Johnny always says pants.
Courtney Cox
Yes, we call, like, panties pants.
Bella Hadid
Okay, well, my pants. I will not sleep completely naked because in my head, even though I'm comfortable, maybe I too prefer. I feel sexier and better with my pants on. And I think it's because if something ever happened, and let's say there was a. It didn't matter if someone came in and I had to rush out, whether it was a fire or weather. I mean, God forbid something really bad happened. That's the one thing. Let's don't expose that. If I had to be, my picture was taken. Oh, she was found. I just don't want to be completely naked. Even if I'm comfortable walking around, I gotta wear pants for sure.
Courtney Cox
Yeah.
Bella Hadid
That feels naked to me still.
Courtney Cox
Yeah, no, it is. It's. It's. It's sexy as well. It's got. It's A charming thing, I think.
Bella Hadid
Yeah. I need to find some. Some comfortable pants.
Courtney Cox
I think you can call them panties.
Bella Hadid
Okay.
Courtney Cox
People are just gonna think, yeah, it.
Bella Hadid
Feels weird like I'm wearing pants right now and panties. But I. I always wear those. Hanky panky panties. I don't know if you know those.
Courtney Cox
No. What are they?
Bella Hadid
Well, it's just they're so comfortable. They're, you know, just a typical. I don't know if you call them G strings, but, you know, lace. They're just so comfortable. But I don't have any variety. It's. There. Have the nude pair for when I'm wearing light clothes, and I've got the black. But that does remind me of a story. Oh, my God. Anyway, I need some good new panties. Not just the 25 pairs that I have of the same ones.
Courtney Cox
There's this incredible lingerie designer, Yasmine As Lami. And she. When I worked for Vivienne Westwood before I started my own brand, she used to work there too. And she was amazing looking with long, dark hair, and she was silent. And she wore these micro mini skirts, and she had these incredible legs, and she was very, very shy. And then, anyway, we both left. I left and she left. And then she started this lingerie store in Paris, and it's like Guy Bourdin style. It's so cool. They're good because they're not too frilly. They're not overwhelming. It's comfortable, but they're really, really beautiful. It's like jewelry almost.
Bella Hadid
Oh, good.
Courtney Cox
Yeah. If you're feeling low, I don't know if you get low, but are there certain clothes that make you feel better?
Bella Hadid
Yeah, I would say so. I think there was a time in my life that I was feeling really low. And I remember my brother saying to me, because I'm sitting home, I'm not one to isolate too much or I don't stay in bed when I get down. But I remember him saying, you need to try. Even though you're feeling this way, you need to get up, put on your favorite outfit, put makeup on. And, you know, if you feel good, sometimes it actually is like, smile, and people smile. Or you'll smile, whatever. I don't know if that's. That's kind of the idea. Yeah. So, yeah, I think there are things that I'm trying to think. I'm a big jean person, so if I have the right pair of jeans and a great cashmere sweater, I feel comfortable. But still, you know, in my skin.
Courtney Cox
Yeah. It's like clothes can have Your back. Yeah, they literally can. And I find, I think a shoe does it for me. I. It just switches me out of fear mode or, you know, if I've gone somewhere.
Bella Hadid
Shoes are tough. You're right. It can change the whole look of an outfit. You can wear sneakers and. Or the same outfit, put on nice shoes. But I'm not that bold. Like, I'm not the person that would wear. I'm not gonna make the shoe be such a statement that I have to be really confident and know that it works with what I'm wearing.
Courtney Cox
Because I find I can be much more overt with a shoe. Like, I'm quite sort of, you know, low key in my general dressing, but I'll wear shoes like more fetishy type of shoes. Like, the shoes I love are platform with a high, like a thicker heel. Like, I've got Louboutins and Alaias and some from Margiela and they just, they're just like powerful, slightly weirdo shoes. And I, Because I'm always cold, I tend to wear socks. And also I wear sandals. So I like wearing white socks with these kind of black shoes with a. They look like, you know, Brian De Palma film or something.
Bella Hadid
Well, you know, I do notice that in your ads and online when I'm looking to see what do I wear with this dress or what do I wear with these. You do have great platforms. You should sell them and make them. But now that I know, I'll be calling you because I love the platforms with all of your stuff. Yeah, it really makes it like, it turns it into just like funky rock and roll cool as opposed to just a beautiful dress, which it could be. I mean, your stuff's not conservative, but it could be. Yeah, but the way you put it together with your models and the way you wear it, I need some of those platforms.
Courtney Cox
I think it's like, it gives you kind of an electric kind of current that goes with clothes.
Bella Hadid
I don't know if I could rock the socks, but I might try.
Courtney Cox
It's good with like a suit, you know, because then it's not too, too lady or conservative. It's got the remnants of your school uniform that you.
Bella Hadid
With the platforms.
Courtney Cox
Yeah.
Bella Hadid
Open toe.
Courtney Cox
Yeah.
Bella Hadid
Okay.
Courtney Cox
Always. Now my toes just hate to be constrained. I've got one pair of white Margiela cowboy boots that, that I love and I wear those. But everything else, the toes out. But it has to be.
Bella Hadid
Do you ever show your toes?
Courtney Cox
Yes. If it's boiling hot, then I quite like my feet.
Bella Hadid
Yeah. I don't mind mine either. Yeah, that's nice.
Courtney Cox
Yeah. It was one of the first things that I started to like and I've kind of worked up now.
Bella Hadid
I want to see your feet and just see. Not that I have a foot thing, guys. No, I don't have a foot, but I think feet are important. When someone has really bad feet, it's real. It's a. It's a drag. That is that turn off. That is a turn off.
Courtney Cox
Yeah. Bad nails are nailed toes.
Bella Hadid
Yeah, that's. I don't like a guy with pink nail like nails. They're pink. I don't mean polish. I'd rather see polish. Honestly, if you have like a. Yeah, feet and not great hands are not great. I do like nice hands on a man and, well, I also love on a woman, like when they have long fingers. Girls, there's certain. Like, I have a friend who has really beautiful long fingers and I always say, please paint your nails red because it just looks so good on her.
Courtney Cox
It is a really beautiful thing. I notice it more and more because I. My. Anyway, I'm hiding my hands because they're so.
Bella Hadid
I'm hiding my hands. My hands aged like 25. I used to on Friends and I used to like, slap as a joke, Slap down Matthew's script. I would do it on actually Cougar Town, too, but it was a thing. And people would make fun of my hands. They're bony and they're veiny and now they're crepey. Here they are.
Courtney Cox
You've got dainty little hands. I've got big hands and the veins stand out like crazy. I look like I met up with my brother and he said, oh, my God, your hands are exactly like in Dad's paintings.
Bella Hadid
It was.
Courtney Cox
Yes, I know. Just don't think about them, please. But I can't wear nail polish because it will make them look like strange kind of abstract things.
Bella Hadid
Okay, let me see. Let me just hold up your hand.
Courtney Cox
I mean.
Bella Hadid
Okay. You know what's weird? They look not good to you and they look great to me. I'm sure that we see something that others aren't seeing. I mean, yeah, the skin's not great on mine. Yours is fine. I can't see that far, but yeah, you probably don't think those are terrible.
Courtney Cox
Yeah, they look really good.
Bella Hadid
Matter of fact, they do look better today. Maybe it's because their skin's falling. I don't know. I love my hands. No, I do have arthritis. That happened recently. It's always fun when your knuckles start getting Bigger and ache. It's just great. Oh, the joy.
Courtney Cox
Well, I've got some tips about that too, but I won't go on.
Bella Hadid
Okay, well, we have to have dinner.
Courtney Cox
Did you have a favorite look from friends? And people always comment on the night. You know, this 90s thing that, that you so embodied. And it was just like very free. And, you know, Kate Moss really sort of embodied that too. Just this kind of cool, feminine, slightly boyish, girlish. And I wondered if there was, you know, as everyone is so obsessed with friends and there's a whole multiple generational re interest, as you said. Like these little kids are just loving it and binge watching. And it's a very affectionate atmosphere, I think, within it. And I wondered, what if you had like a kind of feel good outfit that you reminisced back onto?
Bella Hadid
You know, it's funny because it was mostly during the 90s and I'm not a real 90s person. Not a big shoulder. I think I have wide shoulders anyway, so I don't love a ton of shoulder pads. My daughter Coco is so mad that I didn't save any of the 90s clothes. And I know it's back, like, all that stuff. I didn't love the 90s clothes. As a matter of fact. I could have kept anything on the show that I wanted to, and I didn't. And if I did, any of the clothes that I did have, like I said before, I just. I like to turn over. I don't want to keep the same things. I get bored and I don't like a lot of things. I don't have a big closet. I just want things that I go in, I know I can wear. And if I don't wear it in a while, it's gone. But Jennifer used to, like, she still has the same platforms. But I don't mean the kind you're talking about. I'm talking about the wedges, the. The ones with the rope around them. She would have taken those. She took a lot of Monica's dresses. And she'll say, oh, yeah, you used to wear this on Friends. And I go, I mean, it looks great on her. She's a great figure and she's adorable. But I'm like, why would you take this floral little prairie dress from friends? But she holds on to everything. So it's really funny that she did take some of Monica's clothes. I would have taken that catsuit that I wore, like some dress up holiday more than I would take my other clothes.
Courtney Cox
Yeah. God. Well, everyone was obsessed with what you were wearing in that series. It was. But I never think of 90s as big should, maybe.
Bella Hadid
Am I wrong? Is that not. It feels like it was.
Courtney Cox
I suppose it was still rolling over from the 80s. And maybe it was because I'd worked for Vivienne Westwood, and she. While everyone was doing those power suits and the Versace and this amazing Amazonian kind of way of dressing, she took the shoulder right in. So.
Bella Hadid
Oh, she put him where your shoulder ends.
Courtney Cox
These neat shoulders. And she. Because I remember when I started working for her, and she had this picture of the queen when she was a child, wearing this very kind of demure Harris tweed coat. And it had a neat shoulder. So, you know, when working there, we were like, ugh, shoulder pads. That's gross. You know, we were, you know, we were slavish. Slavishly kind of, you know, following our leader, Vivian, and believing in this and. And this whole kind of charm of a neat shoulder. I sort of almost missed that. I'd forgotten that. It was very overwhelming, that whole look.
Bella Hadid
Right? What was the. I remember I was late to the game, but Jennifer had this outfit on. She was wearing a really cool jacket with a tank top and a pair of jeans. And I just thought, God, she looks great. The shoulder pads are really sharp. So I thought, you know what? I'm gonna get that jacket. Problem is, is that everybody had had that jacket, worn it. I mean, Jennifer was maybe, you know, early on, of course, but by the time I got it, it wasn't as cool anymore. And I think I even asked Miriam, my stylist. She's like, yeah, that's kind of not what people are doing. And I was like, oh, my God, this jacket was thousands of dollars. I mean, it was one of those ones where I thought, I'm gonna splurge and get a balmain. I don't even know how to say it. Balm. I mean, you know, I told you, I'm from Alabama. What do I know? Anyway, I got it. It was too late. Everybody had put theirs in their closet, saving it for a later time. And I was like, I spent too much money on this jacket. I took the shoulder pads out or I cut them way down. Now you can't resell it anymore. I love whether I give it to charity or keep the money. I'm not gonna lie. I like selling shit because I don't want to keep it. And I don't know why. I wore it one time, but I couldn't sell it. Cause I took the shoulder pads out. Now it'd probably be a cool jacket again.
Courtney Cox
And what happened to it?
Bella Hadid
I don't know, but I gave it away. I just thought.
Courtney Cox
But, like, when you took out the shoulder pad or when you cut it.
Bella Hadid
It looked like a fake Balmain, and it looked terrible. So it's not always. It's not always smart to mess with fashion.
Courtney Cox
You never know. I had an Alaia dress and they had big shoulder pads in, and I took them out and it was just wonderful. I wore them with the pads for ages, and then I took them out and he just cut these things. I only had one because everything else was too sexy. But this one was quite demure.
Bella Hadid
Yeah, I. I understand that. I do that too, with, like, when things. I do that. But this particular one was such a. That was their thing.
Courtney Cox
Yeah.
Bella Hadid
That they were known for that their way. They were just. It made me think of something. Oh, you know, this guy doesn't design. I'm sure he designs, does things, but his store closed. You know the dresses that are really, like, thick and they're tight.
Courtney Cox
Oh, yeah. With the band, like the Bandit.
Shopify Representative
Yeah.
Bella Hadid
What's his name?
Courtney Cox
Ove Leger.
Bella Hadid
No, not him.
Courtney Cox
I think he was called that.
Bella Hadid
Yeah. This is somebody else. And, you know. Oh, gosh, this is. This is like my life. Have thoughts. Can't say them. Okay, got it. Roland Marie. That's who it is.
Courtney Cox
Roland Marais. He made these. His dresses were just incredible.
Bella Hadid
I mean, that guy made anybody who put that any kind of one of his dresses, the thick, tight ones, you went from having a flat ass to the back, biggest booty ever. I mean, I'm like, what the fuck? I can't believe this.
Courtney Cox
That is.
Bella Hadid
I have a great butt. And I don't. But, man, I don't know what he does. Whatever it is that's like. Watch this, boys. I know, it's crazy.
Courtney Cox
He's a genius.
Bella Hadid
Why does everybody's butt look so round and perfect?
Courtney Cox
He just had this ability to make a body within his dresses, and he just loves women so much. And he's so handsome as well. Whenever I bump into him, I always think, God, who's that guy? He's so handsome. And then I remember it's Roland Marais.
Bella Hadid
The only thing is that it does accentuate how long someone's body is. So. Yes. Does my butt look really good in a Roland Marie dress? Yeah. Does it also look like it's miles away from my head? Yes. So it's kind of. It's a good and bad thing when you wear things that tight.
Courtney Cox
But in the new era that we're in. It's like, as long as some bits look really good, doesn't really matter about the whole thing anymore. It's like, great.
Bella Hadid
Okay. I didn't know that I'll wear it with confidence, because I didn't. But I feel like if I put a blazer, there's just a little, like, that pokes out like an Alexander McQueen plays that just goes out a little bit. All you see is the butt. So they think I have to work it because I feel insecure about the length of my body. And I don't know why I'm telling people this. So now that's what you'll see. No one could have thought. Would have thought about it. My big mouth.
Courtney Cox
Well, it's because you actually look really good and you wear clothes well, and you obviously love them, and that's why it's fun to talk to you about them. And do you. Do you ever remember feeling shame about something you wore? Or have you been motivated to disguise yourself with clothes?
Bella Hadid
Well, Bella, I do feel shame. I had one time. I was in England. I was in London. I was with Johnny, and we were going to a music award show. He was up for Best writers, whatever for a few songs, actually. And I was like, I'm gonna. I'm gonna be really cool. I wore this beaded, kind of a really funky dress that Miriam had got for me. And I'd had a leather tank top on. But I thought, no, you know what? I'm gonna dress it down. It was a really cool. It wasn't beaded. It was lacy and was sexy. And I wore a white shirt and I kind of tied it. It was a man shirt. And I thought, this is really cool. And I thought, oh, shit. I don't have anything to wear underneath this dress. And it's really see through, like, a very thin lining. But I was like, okay. So I went shopping, and I didn't really know where I was. I was in Westbourne Grove, and I was looking for places to find the right underwear. I was looking for a nude pair of underwear so you couldn't see or, like, little boy shorts or something. And it's TikTok. Need to hurry. Gotta get back. Put, you know, get ready for hair and makeup or whatever I was doing. And I ran into the store and I found a pair of underwear. And I was like, it's not really my skin tone, but I guess that'll work. No one's gonna see this. No one will know. And they were. They weren't that sexy a But B, they were pink. And I, you know, my face might be a little pink, but guess what? Isn't any part else of my body. So I wore nude. Pink underwear. That's what they called nude. I got in the thing, did the red carpet. Tons of pictures from me, from behind, and all you see is a fucking pink pair like thongs. It looks so bad. And you can look it up if you want. It's terrible. I'm so embarrassed that even Miriam called me. She was like, that's. No, no, no, no, no. That's not good. It was bad. I'm ashamed. I'm ashamed of myself. And it's out there in the press still. I don't think people talking about it, but it's bad.
Courtney Cox
Oh, God.
Bella Hadid
You gotta be careful. I'm like, no one's gonna see that. Yeah, they will.
Courtney Cox
It's so unfair. I mean, honestly, it's just ridiculous having to think, you know, think so deeply about something that you just want to be easygoing about things and.
Bella Hadid
Yeah, just be cool.
Courtney Cox
And I suppose everyone then becomes fixated by your pink underwear.
Bella Hadid
Yeah. Do they need to show me getting out of the car? My face is the other way. Is that the important part? Apparently. It made for a good story, though.
Courtney Cox
I bet you look better than you thought.
Bella Hadid
No, you can look it up. I didn't.
Courtney Cox
Well, Courtney, thank you so much for today and being on the couch for fashion neurosis you've been.
Bella Hadid
I'm pretty neurotic.
Courtney Cox
Fascinating and a joy. Thank you so much.
Bella Hadid
Thank you. I adore you. Thank you so much for having me.
Courtney Cox
It.
