Jess
Welcome everyone to Fat Mascara. I'm Jess.
Jen Sullivan
I'm Jen Sullivan.
Sleep Number
Hello.
Jen Sullivan
It's a podcast about beauty culture. How are you?
Jess
Well, Jen, you and I always start this joke doing the same thing, which is like getting into a power pose.
Jen Sullivan
But nobody can see it so they don't know.
Jess
I know. Do you realize that we do that? It's so deranged.
Jen Sullivan
I think it opens up my heart chakra to all of our listeners.
Jess
You know what? I think you're right. Yeah, it's like a vocal exit. It's like Mariah before she starts her performance.
Jen Sullivan
I don't even know what they do, but yes. Hi everyone. Welcome to yeah so quick quick ask because we love you.
Jess
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. We have a fave little fave throw us a review. It takes like literally 30 seconds. You could do it while you're waiting for the subway, the bus, that doctor's.
Jen Sullivan
Appointment, go over to Apple, give us a review, throw us some stars on Spotify.
Jess
Spotify too.
Jen Sullivan
Listen, our listeners are smart and engaged people though, because they're going to take more than 30 seconds. The reviews and comments we get are so thoughtful. In fact, actually, should I read one?
Jess
Please.
Jen Sullivan
Okay, let me see. I have the Spotify function. I'm loving where you can comment specifically on episodes, but on Apple you could do a review. We just got one. Who is this from? Oh, they don't really have a name. Oh, New Jersey, Upstate. Okay.
Jess
Upstate.
Jen Sullivan
Upstate New Jersey. They said very thorough reviews on the products. Incredible evaluation. When asked about two different brands, they took time to do research and provide insightful comments. I enjoy the Science Corner. Always fascinating info. The energy of the show is upbeat, Upbeat. That's right. We are. And we do do our research. Maybe they were referring when a caller asked about two different skincare brands and I really looked into them for her. So maybe I'm thinking, actually we have been getting a lot of calls with people asking for like, I loved this product and it's gone. But guys, that research takes time for us. So I will be getting back to you. But like if you have a product that's no longer available, then usually what I do, and Jess does this as well, we reach out to the brand. Is there anything else in the brand that's similar? And then sometimes sneaky, sneaky on the side, they'll tell us like, okay, we've been hearing that people who used to love it go to this other brand for this thing. So you know, you got to get, you got to do the reporting. So it takes a while.
Jess
I'm still on the word upbeat. I just think that's like hilarious. It reminds me of, I'm focused on the facts.
Jen Sullivan
And you're like, but our energy.
Jess
No, no. Cause you know, no. Cause that, first of all, it matters a lot right now.
Sleep Number
Yes.
Jess
And second of all, you remember how to lose a guy in 10 days.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah.
Jess
And Andy kept on pitching all of these hard hitting stories and the editor in chief was like, but upbeat. But upbeat.
Jen Sullivan
It's like war torn country and we'll go in. But make it upbeat.
Jess
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Exactly. We put a lot of work into the show.
Jen Sullivan
We do. I think that we have an upbeat outlook and I appreciate that people see that.
Jess
Yeah, we talk about the real stuff, the real hard hitting stuff. Sometimes, sometimes it's not always pre. Yeah, but we try to keep it upbeat.
Jen Sullivan
Well, thank you for noticing.
Jess
And the Science Corner. I'm glad. I'm glad you got a hat tip to that, because that is your baby. You brought that to us. That came out of your brain fully.
Jen Sullivan
Packaged with a great name that never evolved beyond the first episode. I brought it up and I was like, haha, it's called Science Corner, and.
Jess
Sometimes I give you a little ribbing for it.
Jen Sullivan
So why didn't I come up with the.
Jess
No, it's. It's efficient. It gets right to the point.
Jen Sullivan
Don't worry, guys. We're gonna make this about you. We're not just gonna toot our own horn. But please do leave us a review. Let's get into the meat of the show, though. Let's just get into it. We gotta talk about your fraxel.
Jess
The meat of the show. I was like, wait, we're going right to news.
Jen Sullivan
No, no, we gotta talk about how the fraxel went.
Jess
For anyone who was worried about me and my Fraxel, I know you guys were all really concerned I survived. I will say Fraxel is not a joke. All right. If anyone was thinking about investing in this treatment a few days in. For the first day, I thought I was a real champ. The second day I was like, it's really not that bad. The third day I was like, this hurts. It hurt to smile. And this wasn't because of some kind of error in the treatment. It's blasting off layers of your skin and it's not comfortable. But if you treat yourself right, you moisturize twice a day. Do not over moisturize because then your face won't heal as quickly. I thought that was pretty interesting.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, interesting?
Jess
Yeah.
Jen Sullivan
No slugging or something.
Jess
Oh, yeah. Do not slug.
Jen Sullivan
Interesting.
Jess
Do not slug. Moisturize twice a day. Use a gentle cleanser and sunscreen. Even in your house, you wear sunscreen, mineral sunscreen because of the.
Jen Sullivan
Then new baby cells are coming out and they're. They could get fried.
Jess
I just laid low, but I did not feel like my face was back to normal for like about seven days. Seven, eight days. And even then, I haven't worn makeup. I'm not even kidding you. Until about like 10 or 10. 10 to like 12 days later because I just felt like my skin was a little. Not quite back to normal.
Jen Sullivan
Right. And we heard from you like two weeks ago, which is probably only on the second day after you got it. So here we are two weeks out and. All right, good advice.
Jess
But one thing. Do not get an eyebrow wax or anything like that.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah.
Jess
Until I would say, several weeks out.
Jen Sullivan
Are you speaking from you. What happened?
Jess
No, I did a tweezing. I got. My girl normally tweezes my eyebrows, but. But she did a little waxing around the top. And this was about two weeks out. And it really. I had a little bleeding.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah. Okay.
Jess
And she was really upset, and it was a whole thing. And she was like, why didn't you tell me? I was like, it was almost two weeks out. She was like, no. She said, that is a very serious treatment. So I thought I was out of the woods, like a week out.
Jen Sullivan
Further tip. You know that little survey y'all fill out when you go to the med spa or the derm or the regular spa? And we all don't wanna do it. Cause we just want our massage. And we just, like, skim through it and sign our name, read the thing and tell them about, especially what drugs and medications and topical products you're on and what treatments you've had.
Jess
Yeah. Take everything seriously. Really seriously.
Sleep Number
Ugh.
Jen Sullivan
I know that feeling. You get the clipboard and you're like, I really don't. No, I don't want to do this right now. I just want to get my treatment. But it is important.
Jess
Yeah. And she was really freaked out and really upset.
Jen Sullivan
Well, you're looking good. You're looking fresh.
Sleep Number
Thanks.
Jen Sullivan
Your eyebrows look tight.
Jess
Thank you. Angela at. She's at Warren Tricomi now. Warren Tricomie. Uptown in the city.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, I'll put a link.
Jess
Yeah. She's awesome. All right. And then I was feeling unwell this week, as you know, Jen.
Jen Sullivan
Yes.
Jess
Very unwell. So I was home. Worked from home all week, hunkered down, and I had some time to watch a little tv, which was fantastic. I, like, so many people, tune into Meghan. She's not Meghan Markle anymore. I still call her Meghan Markle.
Jen Sullivan
Meghan Sussex.
Jess
She's Meghan Sussex.
Jen Sullivan
Yes.
Jess
Meghan Sussex. And I was thrilled. I was screaming alone in my house. So proud. So proud. Our friend, former fat mascara guest. And just like buddy makeup artist Daniel Martin was not only on the show, he is in episode one of the show, screaming. He was so cute in his little black polo shirt, making, like, honey cake. He made this pasta dish, which everyone. Everyone is freaking out that you can't get the recip for the pasta dish, this vegetarian pasta dish. I texted him, I said, where's the recipe? He goes, I know. People want to know. Then I was listening to A podcast. Mamma Mia. Mamma Mia.
Jen Sullivan
Out loud.
Jess
Yeah, they said the same thing. Where's the recipe?
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, I mean, that kind of, to me, is 101 for a lifestyle TV show. Right.
Jess
Maybe she. Maybe she's going to come out with a book or something. I don't know. Maybe this is leading. I. I don't know. But I was.
Jen Sullivan
Did you enjoy it?
Jess
I enjoyed it. Cause, I mean, watching Daniel with this face that I would have the same face of, what the hell is going on? What are we cooking? What are we doing? So serious. He looked like. He looked like he.
Jen Sullivan
The whole thing was quite. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jess
He looked, like, overly serious for what they were gonna do.
Jen Sullivan
Well, it's also odd when you see someone you know, well, on television, anytime I've seen my friends, like, an adjacent person that I actually know in real life, and they end up on something, it's just like a caricature of themselves. Almost like, well, he looks, like different.
Jess
Like, well, he looks. Well, first he looks so himself, because he was like, he caught himself. And then he goes, I'm your most ratchet friend or something. Like he said. It was so. It was so funny. It was just. It was funny.
Jen Sullivan
Are we raising wand? Should we watch it?
Jess
Raise a wand? At least watch episode one. But I think he's. Oh, and then Vicky Sy from Tatcha. But there's two Miss Fat Mascara guests.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, that's right. That's right.
Jess
Should we try to get on from.
Jen Sullivan
What end to what end?
Jess
I don't know. Like an odd couple. I don't know.
Jen Sullivan
But we could go and help her clean out her makeup bag, I guess, or. I don't know. Sure. Jess.
Jess
We could try to build a birdhouse or something in the back.
Jen Sullivan
Okay, done.
Jess
Did you watch? I'm like, I'm going on and on. Did you watch it all?
Jen Sullivan
I watched part of it, and then I saw a bunch of clips online. And, yeah, I like a little rougher around the edges. It was so polished, you know, it was very polished. I like to get to know the real person. I feel, like, the messiness, even. You got me into Real Housewives. I watched Real Housewives New York, and I liked that. It was, like, a little messy. It was like.
Jess
Yeah. No, I don't think this wasn't messy. No. She's not gonna be taking shots at the.
Jen Sullivan
No. And she just looks so. I was like, I'm sorry. When I cook in my kitchen, that is not what I look like. I'm not coming in to look, you know, But Maybe. Maybe I should have Daniel Martin do my makeup before I start cooking my. I made Julia Child's beef bourguignon. Like, it's a lifetime goal to make it. And I made it this past weekend, guys. It tastes like dinty. More beef stew. I'm sorry. I spent 6 hours on this thing and I was like, tastes like Stewart.
Jess
Then you and Megan is the pairing that I need to save. You know what?
Jen Sullivan
Be on her lifestyle show. She'll come with, like, this whole fancy thing, and I'll be like, I gotta get the hoagie at the Wawa.
Jess
That is the duo. I'll be in the back ordering takeout for a pub.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, done. All right, well, congrats to Daniel and Biang in that. What a delight. What a delight. All right. And I'll put links so we can. If you want to, if you like both of them, you saw the episode and you like them, then you can hang out with them on fat mascara because we have episodes with both of those people.
Jess
Shall we head over to the. The.
Jen Sullivan
Let's go do the news. In the meantime, I'm going to put in my ask for Megan Suss Sussex's show, and then we'll meet back here and do the news. Okay, see you guys in a second. We go through a lot of sunscreen here in the fat mascara families, don't we, Jessica?
Jess
We go through a ton.
Jen Sullivan
One of our favorites is, of course, Blue Lizard Pediatrician trusted dermatologist tested. Also they have these little smart caps that turn blue in UV light. How good is that? Then you know the sun is out. It is time to get protected. Plus they have a whole sensitive family of products that's personally my favorite. Helps keep my sensitive skin safe from the sun's harmful rays. All the formulas are free from potentially irritating parabensalates fragrances. I just love them. To which one do you use?
Jess
I love them for my child. And you know why? Because I love a spray. Easy to get her, but they dry clear. None of that nasty white pasty stuff. It dries nice and clear. And also I know that this should be obvious, guys, they're free from potentially irritating fragrances, parabens and phthalates. Go to blue lizardsunscreen.com to find out more information and find out which sunscreens are right for your family and where you can buy in store. Or visit the Blue Lizard Australian sunscreen store on Amazon.
Jen Sullivan
Be fearless in the sun.
Jess
Foreign.
Jen Sullivan
Have you noticed when there are low temperatures and low humidity, your skin can have a tough time retaining moisture Even if you're keeping up your skincare routine. I think I've said this before, but I have finally figured out the way to keep my skin hydrated and looking good in this kind of weather. I mean it is 19 degrees in New York right now. I'm taking Rituals Hyac skin supplement, a clinically proven way to support skin hydration with science back benefits like reducing wrinkles and improving skin smoothness. Listen, I'm not going to take any supplement unless I can see the receipts and Ritual has them. In a clinical study, Ritual hyacinth led to a 2.9 times increase in skin smoothness within 90 days as compared to placebo. And subjects reported an improvement in skin elasticity, glow and radiance in 90 days. The best part is you don't have to figure out when to put another product on your face. This is a supplement you swallow. It's just one capsule a day and you can take it whenever you want. So much easier than some of these other beauty supplements out there which have like six horse sized pills a day. No? I also like that Ritual works with world class certification bodies to validate their products. The company is a certified B core with supplements that are vegan, gluten free and made traceable. On top of that, Ritual uses scientific tools to select lower carbon packaging and prioritize sustainably sourced ingredients. Start Hyacinth to support your glow without compromising on clean science. Hyac from Ritual is a clinically proven skin supplement you can actually trust. Jess
Okay, let's head to the news. So we're starting off in Milan. As you know or you may know, it was Milan Fashion Week and I just want to focus on one show right now, the Prada Show, Spring Summer 25. It was called Raw Glamour. A little light on the glamour, heavy on the raw. Well, that's a Little subjective. Little subjective.
Jen Sullivan
No. That's what we come to you for. Go on.
Jess
I didn't think it was that glamorous, but, like, I'm being very literal here. But it was very raw. Guido Paolo did the hair, and it was very. These very heavy, matted ponytails. Very staticky, frizzled, and frazzled. And Lindsay Alexander did the makeup. The brows were really unnaturally dark. Kind of like. I want to say, like raccoony kind of almost like instead of a brow pencil, it seemed like they used shoe polish.
Jen Sullivan
Inky.
Jess
Yeah, exactly. The skin was left very natural, a little balm, and no sort of classic, makeupy, glamorous touches to speak of. But Prada's known for these really subversive takes on femininity and, you know, traditional beauty. Prada likes to take a more artistic, thinking woman's approach.
Jen Sullivan
Yes. Thinking person thinking.
Jess
I love that. The thinking woman. It's not always about being, like, traditionally pretty. It's the. This more artistic expression. What do you think about this?
Jen Sullivan
I saw the show's hair and makeup, and I liked it because I don't want always the fashion and beauty. I don't always want to see stuff walking down the Runway that it's not the red carpet. To me, it should be pushing us forward. What does this say about culture right now? What does this say about the fashion that they're putting out? Why are the eyebrows so dark? Like, is that meant to make her look angry? I don't know. The hair was like a sculpture. It got me thinking. It looked different.
Jess
He was very teased. Yeah.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah. When anything's too perfect and polished on the Runway, I don't know, I get bored. So I. I was into it.
Jess
Yeah. I mean, we're talking about it.
Jen Sullivan
You couldn't go to the Academy Awards looking like that. Or you could actually, you know, someone like Julia Fox shows up with hair scribbled all over her body and, like, matte lip and no eyebrows. Like, there are people that push it on the red carpet, but usually it's so safe, and I like not being safe.
Jess
Yeah. Yeah. I thought it was cool saying it's not glamorous. I'm not saying that it's not.
Jen Sullivan
No. In a way that is more glamorous because it's. Well, it's art because it's just taking it to a museum level where we think about things, not just the everyday kind of. Cause glamor's like. Yeah. Glamour's the wrong word. What's the word I want? Glamour, to me, is red carpet. This is more like, hmm, I don't know. I'll think about that.
Jess
Yeah, it's provocative.
Jen Sullivan
Provocative.
Jess
And that is what Prada's all about. And that's certainly, you know, Prada's. And without no disrespect to the other shows, but Prada is like the. It's a highlight of Milan Fashion Week, and everyone wants to see sort of where the wind is blowing in fashion, and certainly now beauty. Prada also has a beauty collection, and I feel like they're not trying to push a particular product with this one. So that's also interesting and kind of a related moment. I debated whether or not to include this, but I think it's worth noting. The spring summer 2012 collection. The fashion collection was accompanied by a project that Prada did with the author Ottessa Moshfegh. And she writes a number of books that are really centered around a female protagonist that's usually very polarizing or.
Jen Sullivan
I love her writing. Yeah, yeah.
Jess
Difficult in air quotes. Unconventional. And this project featured the actress Carey Mulligan, who also always takes on projects with a really interesting, polarizing female protagonist. The one that I'm thinking of most recently is Promising Young Woman. This project is called 10 Portraits, and it's very cool. Otessa wrote 10 different characters for Carey Mulligan, who is in full character. This almost reminds me of, like, Sydney Sherman kind of thing.
Jen Sullivan
Okay, get this, Jess. Get this. I'm on a way to a date in New York City with my husband. He's wearing his winter jacket, and he pulls out of his pocket the booklet that you're speaking of.
Jess
Oh, my God.
Jen Sullivan
And he opens it up, and, like, usually he's doing a crossword puzzle. And instead I was like, what are you reading? You're reading Prada's book that came with the New York Times Magazine this weekend. And he's like, it's this author I love. And of course, we both have spoken about Ottessa Mushfegh's writings. And so he was, like, showing me each character when he would get to the page and read it. And he found a typo. But we can't decide if the typo is purposeful or not. Cause she's not that kind of writer. And it was spark flies, the sparks fly. But she put it as one word. And I was like, but that sounds really cool. Maybe it's not a typo, but it was, like, on the second page. So I don't know. It set off a whole conversation in my household. Yeah. This is the thing about Being an editor and reading stuff like, you just.
Jess
Can'T turn it off, the two of you both being editors.
Jen Sullivan
Sure, if you don't know. My husband, he's an editor. He works at Fast Company. Yeah. So we, like, had a whole debate about whether this typo was intentional. And it goes back to what you were saying about Prada on the Runway. They get you thinking it wouldn't be beyond them to stick a typo in there. So you're like, oh, it's not perfect. Something's off. Like, what's going on here? So Otessa, if you're listening, because I know you're. No, I don't know if she would listen to Fat Massacre. I need to know where maybe one.
Jess
Of her friends is.
Jen Sullivan
Okay. If anybody knows somebody in her world.
Jess
I'm sure is Sparkfly.
Jen Sullivan
Sparksfly, is it?
Jess
I love that.
Jen Sullivan
There you go.
Jess
Sparkflies. It's a good name for Sparkfire.
Jen Sullivan
I know. That's the other thing. It sounded so beautiful the way that it was beautiful. Maybe it's intentional.
Jess
It's a great brand name. Love it. It's like this whole idea of a complicated woman is a theme for you this year.
Jen Sullivan
Matlin, I've noticed so far what. It's been a theme for you, too, like, with the substance and some of the stories that have really interested you this year. Like a complicated. Yeah, no, it's true.
Jess
But even the moment that we're in, not to go, like, too big for this little news segment, but I think it's like, it's a. It's a theme right now, just in the world. Right.
Jen Sullivan
So complicated times.
Jess
I'm going to take a very sharp turn here. All right, so I've been a huge fan of Lush for a long time. Not just me, many people. They're a huge brand. Their products are really fun, but their activism is, I think, very, very real. Like, I'm just going to say, like, not bse. They definitely put their money where their mouth is, and they. They do things in a really creat. Well, right now, they're partnering with an organization called Change the Ref. It's an organization that uses art and nonviolent confrontation to advocate for gun control. Do look them up. They're really. I spent like, 15 minutes last night just on their Instagram, and they've created this work called Bloom A New Day. It's an interactive experience at south by Southwest in Austin to put the focus on school shootings. The founders of Change the Ref, Manuel and Patricia Oliver, are the parents of Joaquin Guac Oliver, one of the 17 children killed at Parkland, Florida on Valentine's Day in 2018. And gun safety laws have have remained largely unchanged by Congress. As we all know, since then There have been 303 school shootings and 191 lives lost in the U.S. so this experience at south by Southwest is truly amazing from. And unfortunately I'm not going to be able to see it. But what people are going to experience is they're going to step into students shoes and learn about how the threat of gun violence in schools has been normalized through this interactive experience.
Jen Sullivan
So Lush is sponsoring that and they're the. The benefactors, if you will, behind this art and education piece.
Jess
Yes. And at the same time, they're launching a new and exclusive product called the Sunflower bath bomb. It's $7, inspired by the flowers that Joaquin brought to school for his girlfriend for Valentine's Day on the day of the Parkland shooting. And 75% of the proceeds go to charity. So I think this is a really moving and worthwhile and creative partnership. And I'm so obviously incredibly sorry that it has to exist, but I think this is just a really powerful partnership.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, thanks for sharing. Yes. Bloom a new day.
Jess
I know it's a. It's a little heavy, but I think it's important that we are talking about it.
Jen Sullivan
No, it's also people in our industry. This is how money is what moves things and that's how things happen. And companies are able to say things now in America that other people aren't. So I think it's fine to be talking about how the beauty industry. We talk a lot about the philanthropic and social justice that some of the beauty brands want to do. I think it's a good thing.
Jess
All right, back to. Probably should have brought this up after Fashion Week because this is a biggie. Louis Vuitton and Pat mcgrath are teaming up. This was huge news this week.
Jen Sullivan
When you saw the news, what was your first, like, what did you say? Because I went like this.
Jess
I'm surprised there weren't tremors under my. Yeah. Under my desk when this happened because sometimes we have slow news weeks in beauty and I'm like scrambling for like a repackage in a bit of news or like, maybe there's a flanker that I could talk about.
Jen Sullivan
This is big news.
Jess
This is the kind of news that Jen and I wait for all week.
Jen Sullivan
Pat McGrath, creative director of Louis Vuitton.
Jess
I mean. Okay, I'll get the headline now and then let's discuss.
Jen Sullivan
No we got it. We got it. Let's discuss.
Jess
Okay.
Jen Sullivan
Gets it.
Jess
What? I. I think, like, she's speechless. Yeah.
Jen Sullivan
I think I'm confused, honestly, to be honest, I'm confused because I feel like Pat McGrath Labs is like. I don't. There's a lot of people that are able to do two jobs at once, but then I always get, like, there's young, new, fresh makeup artists, and I want to see their work. I'm surprised they use someone who has her own brand already. I don't know.
Jess
I feel like she's. She came out with her own brand. It was such a huge achievement. Remember when she came out with her own brand? And, like, I remember that whole time period, she had, like, one product at first, then it was, like, two products. So she's got the gold collection, then she had the lipstick. It was so small at one point. Right. And now it's become so big. Like, it's become something that is so different than it was at the start, and that's very normal. Like, it scaled so big, and now I almost feel like it's set free. And now she's ready for another challenge.
Jen Sullivan
To build another beauty identity. Yeah. The only thing is that her name is on the one that we just were talking about. Pat McGrath Labs. So I always think about that. I'm like, if you've built up a brand, it's under identity. I guess Bobby Brown's a good. Like, Bob. It's totally different kind of makeup artist. Right. But she built up Bobby Brown. Time to move on. Now I'm starting with Jones Road. It's just interesting. And of course, it would be high fashion because it's Pat McGrath. So Louis Vuitton does make sense in that sense for me, but I'm also just like, the luxury fashion play into beauty. You need to do it right. You need to do it right. Some of them just look, like, cool. Put it in the fashion store, and everybody who's on vacation in X City in the country where that. You know what I mean? They'll buy it.
Jess
Yeah.
Jen Sullivan
And then it's like, not really a beauty line. It's just, like, the people that come into the store but can't afford the clothes will buy the lipstick.
Jess
It's like a souvenir. Like, it's a. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's an aspirational purchase. Well, you're hitting on something that I was thinking about yesterday. It's like, everywhere we hear luxury is, like, really suffering. Like, the people who were buying X brand luxury. I'm trying not to get in trouble. Like, that customer's gone. The people who were buying 750 flip flops, maybe now, what are they? Fifteen hundred dollars flip flops. They're not buying them because they're nervous about their jobs, but maybe they'll buy $400 compact or, you know, fragrance.
Jen Sullivan
Right.
Jess
So they're investing money into beauty. So this is, like, her moment.
Jen Sullivan
I'm so curious to see what they do. Like the perfume line, when they did their. It was gorgeous. And they come in little cases that look like this. There's a history to the brand, and there's leather involved. That makes sense because they do that well. Beauty. Like, I just had a vision. I was on the subway when I saw the news on my phone, and I was like, okay, what's it going to be? But I'm like, pat's going to do something amazing. Of course I think she will.
Jess
And she can't do that at her brand.
Jen Sullivan
I guess it's become bigger than her. And it's very commercial now. Not commercial, but like, yeah, a little bit commercial. So maybe at Louis. Yeah, she can do something.
Jess
I think it's just two different things. It's like she wants to have.
Jen Sullivan
Man, I can barely do my job. She has, like, 82 jobs. That's the other thing. I'm like, how do these people have the time? I don't. They have teams. I guess.
Jess
Everything I've heard about Patience is that she doesn't sleep. She works, like, around the clock.
Sleep Number
Yes.
Jen Sullivan
Well, congrats to you.
Jess
I don't say she really doesn't sleep.
Jen Sullivan
But I'm saying, like, what will her do next? What will she do? Maybe this is the moment.
Jess
So it's coming out in the fall for anyone who is setting their clocks.
Jen Sullivan
Interesting news.
Jess
It's lip. It's lip gloss, and it's eye to.
Jen Sullivan
Start with more soon. Watch the space.
Jess
As Jess says, watch the space. Yeah. And then finally, Bond Number nine just released their newest scent, Greenpoint.
Jen Sullivan
Okay. For people who aren't familiar with Bond Number nine, the fragrance house has made its name by creating fragrances that evoke different neighborhoods in New York City. Go on. I have so many thoughts.
Jess
I mean, this scent, first of all, I'm very excited to try it. It's going to be full of juicy pear, fresh cardamom. It's got marine notes because it's, you know, it's right by the water.
Jen Sullivan
For people who aren't familiar with New York City, first of all, Greenpoint is where I spent a lot of debaucherous nights in my 30s I and 20s, I guess, too. To me, this is how many neighborhoods? Because we don't bond. No, nine comes out with new fragrances all the time. Why is. Why is this one making the news for you, Jessica? Well, go ahead, say what you're thinking.
Jess
It makes me smile because Greenpoint is. Greenpoint. No, Greenpoint was where. When I was in my 20s, it took me. My brother lived in Greenpoint for a long time. It took me like three hours to get there. Everyone spoke Polish. There was one. There was one place that there was an English speaking, like, diner, and I think he lived there for like $800. And now the median rent, according to seven websites that I average is $5100 for a one bedroom today.
Jen Sullivan
What?
Jess
So.
Jen Sullivan
And for people not in New York City, Greenpoint is in North Brooklyn. It's over the river from Manhattan.
Jess
Oh, yeah. I had to take a bus and then a subway.
Jen Sullivan
I love how you centered it in Jess's journey to get to her brother's house. But yes, it was. It's not an excerpt of New York City by any means. It's connected on the subway line. It's not a great subway line, but you can get into Manhattan very quickly.
Jess
It's a perfectly fine subway line.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, it was historically, at least in the 20th century, Polish immigrants settled there. And there were a lot of factories and it edges up against the river and there were clubs there before it gentrified. You would go there and there would be like, I don't know, that's where I, like, had a couple nights out at a bar and then, remember the pencil factory? I spent a lot of time there. Was that a former pencil factory?
Jess
Of course it was a former pencil factory.
Jen Sullivan
So think about that. It was all factories and things. And then I guess I'm the gentrifier because I was going to get fancy craft beers at the pencil factory and doing God knows what on the dance floor. And afterwards, who knows? Anyway, to me, I was like, okay, we've hit peak bond number nine, because what neighborhood is left?
Jess
Because bond number nine. Like, what they do is they will honor celebrate.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, yeah, I said that.
Jess
Oh, yeah. Fabulous neighborhoods. But I just think it's funny. So what I'm hoping for, it's like a bellwether of, like, real estate.
Jen Sullivan
So does Staten island get one? Does there a Staten Island?
Jess
I want a Hoboken one. I want a Jersey City one.
Jen Sullivan
I mean, why stop there? Isn't Philadelphia considered the sixth borough by some? Come on, by number.
Jess
Well, do you know that in Hoboken, I've seen. I've literally seen a sweatshirt that said Hoboken, the Sixth Borough. And that was very controversial. That was extremely controversial.
Jen Sullivan
Fine. Then Philly will be the Seventh Borough. I know we're getting very near city, everybody, by the way, but this view.
Jess
Of New York City, the last topic is for local neighborhood stuff.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, that's right. We do this. So local neighborhood. By the way, 100ml of this new fragrance costs $470. It's also a premium. Premium fragrance.
Jess
That was the rent in 1998.
Jen Sullivan
That was literally the rent in Greenpoint. Not that long.
Jess
Listen, I'm teasing. First of all, I feel really badly about. Gentrification is not. I don't want to go into gentrification.
Jen Sullivan
It's the prices of how much it costs to live in New York City is actually just, like, ridiculous.
Jess
Yeah, this is. This is a real. This is a. This is a problem. This is a problem.
Jen Sullivan
I also think when I think of what maybe Greenpoint would smell like, I think of it as like a former industrial neighborhood. And I don't know how juicy pear and bergamot zest and rose and magnolia play into that, which I know it's probably.
Jess
You know what you could do? You could do, like, baking bread.
Jen Sullivan
Okay.
Jess
You could do baking bread, but of.
Jen Sullivan
Course, you want to smell good, too.
Jess
I like bread.
Jen Sullivan
I don't want to see what neighborhoods are left that we can do. We definitely. There's got to be a Staten island already. What are there?
Jess
I've always been extremely fond of the garment district where my mom.
Jen Sullivan
My mom grew up in Soundview in the Bronx. Are we going to move further northwards?
Jess
City Island. Is there a city island?
Jen Sullivan
I don't know. We're going to find out. Also, I had a friend that lived on City island, and she said it.
Jess
Smelled so bad, it's very fishy.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, I don't know if that's going to make a perfume anyway.
Jess
It's always a. More like. It's a romanticized version. These are always romanticized versions.
Jen Sullivan
We're gonna get Governor's Island, Randall's Island. Like, what else? I could keep going anyway. This is the job of Bond number nine. But when I saw Greenpoint, I did another sharp intake of breath like Pat McCarthy.
Jess
I'm getting a sample. Listen, I say all of this with love.
Jen Sullivan
Get me a sample, too, and we'll do a live sniff test. Okay.
Jess
All of this is with love. Bond, we'll get your brother on.
Jen Sullivan
He used to live there. My cousin Sadie used to live there when she first got to New York City. I'll get her on.
Jess
There is so much history and so much love for New York in bond number nine that I say all of this.
Jen Sullivan
You support it.
Jess
Yeah. With gentle ribbing.
Jen Sullivan
Let's go raise a wand.
Jess
Okay, okay.
Jen Sullivan

Jen Sullivan
Okay, it is time to raise a wand. Wow. The hotlines were lit this week, Jess. Lit up. Phones were ringing. I had to bring in a call center to answer all of them. Not true. It's just. It all goes to voicemail. I don't pick up like it was a. A callathon.
Jess
Oh, my God. Do you remember those?
Jen Sullivan
Yes. Well, now go ahead and call a THON646-4818182. It's actually not us asking for money like public radio. It's just you leaving your thoughts and your questions on our voicemail, which you now have three minutes to do so. Cause I figured out how to archive all the old voicemails. I saved them, but we've got them off of the memory thing, so that now there's plenty of room for new people. And new people have been calling a lot. So, as you know, Jess and I love a chocolate brown eyeliner. Julie has been asking for a liquid eyeliner that doesn't transfer. I want a dark chocolate brown liquid eyeliner. The fam came through. I'm not gonna be able to play all of them, but I wanna thank Liz. Hi, Liz. Who recommended Hourglasses Mechanical Gel Eyeliner to us. Lori from New Jersey, she says the fenty fly liner in brown is amazing. But get this, isn't as impressed with the black for some reason. The black smudges, but the brown.
Jess
Interesting.
Jen Sullivan
Lori doing the work for us. Thank you, Lori. And then Courtney from Brooklyn. Her favorite liquid eyeliner is a brand just discovered in 2024. EM Cosmetics. Oh, yeah, she likes the EM Cosmetics brush tip Illustrated Eyeliner. I don't usually like a brush strip. I'm more of a felt tip girly. But Courtney, I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna get that one. And I also have two listeners to play. Let's do Inez first. Go ahead.
Ines
Hey, Fat Mascara. This is Ines. I have two brown eyeliner recommendations. The first one is Sephora. It's the Wink It Felt Tip Eyeliner. And the color is cup of Jo. It lasts a long time. Sometimes I have a hard time getting it off, actually. And the other one is Iko, and it's Black Magic Cocoa Edit Liquid Eyeliner. And I think that they're both on sale right now, but they're both amazing and they last a long time. And I love your podcast. Thanks.
Jess
I love a sale.
Jen Sullivan
Yes, I love a sale too. Thank you, Ines. And. Oh, another Courtney. We have a lot of Courtneys who call in. This one's from Michigan.
Ines
Hi, Jen and Julie. This is Courtney from Grand Rapids, Michigan, calling you about the Eyeliner that I think would be great for both of you. It's too face liquid eyeliner, and it's in chocolate, and I have greasy eyelids and I am over 45, and I think it works wonderful. I love the podcast. I binged everything from 2020 on after you were on JVN and keep doing what you're doing. And I love the diversity and inclusion.
Whole Foods Market
Bye.
Jen Sullivan
You know, we pre record, so I actually forwarded that voicemail right away to Julie so she could hear it as well. So thank you, Courtney from Michigan. And the lines are open, guys. 646-481-8182. That phone number is for you to tell us about products you love and raise a wand to those products to ask us questions, to weigh in on any topic that we were talking about. Something you heard in the show today that sparked an idea. Thoughts on Louis Vuitton and Pat mcgrath. Thoughts on the Greenpoint fragrance from bond number nine.
Jess
A neighborhood you want them to do next?
Jen Sullivan
Oh, my God, yes. Homework.
Jess
Yeah, homework.
Jen Sullivan
Or where you're from, what neighborhood in your town deserves a fragrance? And what would it smell like?
Jess
Mm, I love that. I love that.
Jen Sullivan
This is our new spring activity, everybody. Clearly, we planned this because I'm not at all. Just, like, get so excited. You can tell I just thought of this idea. I want to hear what fragrance?
Jess
What would Philly smell like?
Jen Sullivan
Oh, God. Okay, tune in next week because I'm going to work on this project. I have so many thoughts. I have so many thoughts. And do not. It's got to have a yeasty, soft pretzel note for me. I'm just saying it right now. I mean, there's a greasy smell sometimes, but. Oh, but there's certain parts. Okay. Anyway, where are you from? Call us. Tell us where you're from. I thought you were asking. I was like, no, I'm asking the fam. Call us. Tell us where you're from and why it deserves a perfume and what it would smell like. Maybe, I don't know, someone will hear you and I'll play your thing and we'll get this fragrance made. Or maybe you live somewhere that has a perfume for you.
Jess
I love this.
Jen Sullivan
Are you from Portofino? You already have perfumes. You're fine. But if you're from somewhere else in the world and your town deserves a perfume, calls and tells it what it would smell like. 6464-818182. All right, we're raising our wands. What are you raising a wand to, Jess?
Jess
I'm raising a wand To. I think it's. It's. I think it's for kids, but it's, like, not. It could be for anyone, really. This brand is called Chance of Sunny. I found it because somebody sent it to me for my child. But honestly, it's just good for, like, I have very itchy, sensitive skin lately. In the winter? Yes. It's, like, still winter.
Jen Sullivan
Welcome.
Jess
Okay, we're recording this. It's still the end of winter, but Chance of Sunny is this very mild. The word natural, you know, I don't like to use that, but basically, it's got nothing in it. Okay. It's just.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, they use the hyphenated adjective. Sensitive. Safe. Sensitive safe product.
Jess
Sensitive safe.
Jen Sullivan
Safe for people with sensitive skin.
Jess
Yeah. And it's like such a nothing burger kind of. Well, nothing burger sounds like that's, like, not a word.
Jen Sullivan
Pejorative. You're not being pejorative. I get it.
Jess
Yeah, sorry. It's got nothing in it that's gonna bother your skin. And the price is not a lot. It's like $14 for a pretty sizable body wash. And I use it on me. I use it on my daughter.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, you're raising wand to the body wash.
Jess
The body wash.
Jen Sullivan
Okay.
Jess
But the body lotion is also good, too.
Jen Sullivan
I'll allow two wands. Go ahead.
Jess
So, because I got the set and the lotion is incredible, the lotion, it disappears in your body. I've had so many. And this is the thing I'm gonna say, guys, about the lotion. So, yeah, this is a twofer. I did kinda sneak one in. Okay. Sometimes. And I know you hear me. I know you hear me. With those lotions that are natural and sensitive. You are rubbing that stuff in for, like, 10 years. My child walks around like. She's like Casper the Ghost. You know what I mean? Like, I'm like, it's fine.
Jen Sullivan
Just leave it actually on slightly moist skin, which is actually ideal because you wanna loc that moisture in. But then it's just. We got a glue factory, right?
Jess
Yeah. From the pencil factory.
Jen Sullivan
I don't know.
Jess
Factory. Yeah. No. And she's like, it's still on me. I'm like, it's fine. It's supposed to be like that. Like, put the pajamas on top of her. I'm like, it'll absorb this.
Jen Sullivan
We're slugging honey.
Jess
Yeah, yeah. This absorbs, like, any kind of not natural lotion, but it is. It's perfect for sensitive skin. And even the lavender one is good. But, like, if you're freaked out by that the plain one, the yellow one.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, because you wouldn't want the essential.
Jess
Yeah, like if you're like.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, if you're really sensitive, fragrance free.
Jess
But I love, I love both of them. But the fragrance free one in the yellow tube is great too. So anyway, they're fabulous. They go toe to toe with all of the other names. I'm not going to name check them. But all the other sensitive skin body washes that we know and the price is similar, even a little bit cheaper, so. Love it.
Jen Sullivan
Cute name. Chance of sun.
Jess
It's super cute.
Jen Sullivan
I will raise a wand to the. I don't know how I didn't find this sooner. The Tweezerman stainless steel facial razor. The reason it came into my radar is because they just launched a new colorway this rose golds. But I didn't know. So I. I'm a big fan of. I used to buy them at the beauty supply store and they were direct from Korea or Japan. They were the little razors that you use to do your eyebrows. The disposable razors that are plastic. Everybody knows what I'm talking about right at this point.
Jess
And when you say do your eyebrows, like, where do you do it on your eyebrows?
Jen Sullivan
Well, this was back in the day. So I would do. When I was doing like a more of an arched eyebrow, I would buy these tinkle, I think they were called.
Jess
Oh, yeah, yeah. I remember when those came out.
Jen Sullivan
Those weren't from Asia, those were American. But anyway, they're disposable plastic. Then along came the dermaflash and I was like doing my whole face sometimes with the dermaflash. But I bought the refills once and I was like, this is a whole. You have to plug it in and it has to turn on and it does really work. It's for like a whole treatment. I don't need that. I just need a quick one that is slim that I can work around my face where there's hair that I need it. Whether it's my mustache, the fabulous chin hairs I get. Maybe the thing on the side, like is looking a little, you know, I'm not doing my whole sideburn or I'm trimming up my brows. Guys, there's Persian blood in me. I'm a hairy woman. Let me just tell you. There's like hair in places you wouldn't even imagine. And so I love this because I will admit I was throwing away the plastic razors. I didn't like it. This is made of aluminum or stainless steel and I like the rose gold colorway, it doesn't matter. I just really like the product. It's so slim. And then all you buy as the refills are just the blades, the aluminum, the stainless steel blades. So it's all metal. There's no plastic parts that you have to buy. You don't have to plug it in. And what I like is it has a weighted handle so, like, I'm very balanced. So I can, like, keep that perfect sort of 45 degree angle to, like, shave without. I have the. Oh, I don't have the tip on. I was just. Look, I was just waving a razor in my face and it was totally fine because it's buffered on the edges so that you're not gonna cut yourself. Cause I find with the cheap ones, I sometimes would nick myself if I wasn't doing it well. And if you want a new blade every time because you really want it sharp, you can do that and not feel too guilty because it's not plastic and it just looks very sleek and like, it's much more expensive than it is when it's only like 15 bucks.
Jess
Do you. Yeah, that does look nice.
Jen Sullivan
And then the refills are cheaper, obviously, guys. And it comes with a bunch of refills.
Jess
Do you buy the refills online?
Jen Sullivan
Yes, you can buy the refills online.
Jess
And do you use a magnifying mirror.
Jen Sullivan
When you do this? So the. I have the. I can't raise a wand to my simply human mirror, but I have had it forever because it has a little inset in the makeup mirror is a little magnifying portion. And I do find sometimes when I'm hunting for that chin hair that, you know, you can feel, but you just can't find it. You're like, it's in there. Where is it? I'll use the magnifying portion, but otherwise, no, I'm pulling back because I want to do my brows further away so I can see. I'll do like the top line a little bit because I'm one of those people. Kim Kardashian talk about this. She might have talked about this on our podcast. Her hairline grows into her brow. I am the same. I think it's like the Middle Eastern heritage. I don't know. But if I allowed it, my brow and my head hair would be one. Like, from here to here would just be covered. Does that make sense to anybody? I'm sure there's people out there listening who are like, it's not just you. There's other. No, I know People around the world that that happens to. But, like, a brow and the head hair are one. So I like a little distinction between my head hair and my brow hair.
Jess
So personally, a little bit. A little bit.
Jen Sullivan
I mean, it's not a bad look. It's kind of cool, but they sort of just. I can't even explain it. It's like having a sideburn between your brow and your. And anyway, Kim Kardashian famously got that lasered. She got her hairline lasered to get rid of that with laser hair removal and regrets it.
Jess
Why? Why does she say she regrets it?
Jen Sullivan
Because it was part of her, but also because edge styling is so hot. Like, think about all the styles you do where you're swirling your edges or, like, this is nothing new to the black community. This is a part of. You can use this to your style advantage. Personally, mine are so long that, like, they just look like head hairs coming out of my head. I guess I could swirl them down and use a little edge gel, but it's just not my. Yeah, I'd rather read away.
Jess
Okay, got it, got it, got it.
Jen Sullivan
Everybody learned way more than they ever wanted to know about my hirsuteness.
Jess
Hirsute.
Jen Sullivan
Sorry about that, guys. Should I stop now? Razor wand to this tweezer man.
Jess
You'd never know, though. I'm looking at you. There's like, a whole model.
Jen Sullivan
Well, because I do I razor it, like, once a week.
Jess
All once a week.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, I guess I could get it waxed, but I don't know. I like doing my own brows. It's like I don't trust other people.
Jess
Well, you do a good job.
Jen Sullivan
Thanks, Jess. Guys, I gotta shut up. I was talking too much about myself. Let's go get our beauty sleep.
