Jess Matlin
Hello, everyone. How you doing? Welcome to Fat Mascara, the podcast about beauty culture and all the things that pop into Jen in my head during the show.
Jen Sullivan
New tagline alert heads. New tagline. I'm Jen Sullivan.
Jess Matlin
I'm Jess Matlin. How's it going? How's the week?
Jen Sullivan
Yeah.
Jess Matlin
Hey, friend. What's up? What's up?
Jen Sullivan
Well, it's going well because I have some exciting news.
Jess Matlin
What's the news?
Jen Sullivan
Fat Mascara is nominated for a People Reader's Choice poll award as part of their Reader's Choice poll for the most beautiful people of 2025.
Jess Matlin
Yes, yes, yes. Okay, first of all, thank you, People magazine.
Jen Sullivan
I'd like to thank People. We'd like to thank our crack PR team, which consists of me and Jess. No, we didn't. We didn't gun for this. This was such a wonderful surprise.
Jess Matlin
This was an incredible surprise. I don't know what's more American and, like, part of the pop culture ethos than People magazine.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah. To be clear, if we win, it's not going to be Jess and Jen on the COVID as the most beautiful.
Jess Matlin
We're absolutely doing a mock cover. I thought about this when I woke up this morning.
Jen Sullivan
Yes, if we win, we'll do a mock cover. But they have a new reader's poll this year with all these fun questions about beauty, like, your favorite best friend, beautiful duo, and, like, biggest hair transformation of the year.
Jess Matlin
Who would you want to do your hair? And it was like, Chris Appleton, Jen Atkin.
Jen Sullivan
I know. Kim Kimball. I was like, oh, who do I want to hang out? It was super fun to do. The poll takes, like, five minutes. Not even five minutes takes two minutes. It's like 15 questions. But when you get over to question number seven about what's your favorite beauty podcast?
Jess Matlin
I mean, listen, we don't ask for much, but we're absolutely asking you to vote for us.
Jen Sullivan
I'll put the URL for the voting in the episode notes if you feel like doing it. By the way, when you're done, the little thing, it takes truly two minutes. They do ask for your email, but make sure to check. Well, if you want the people emails coming, you can keep it opt in. But uncheck that box if you don't want to get all, like, the breaking people news. I had them coming for a while and I was like, you want the breaking people news? That's why I was like, I am so informed on the pop culture and what is happening with the celebrities at every minute.
Jess Matlin
But uncheck that box if you don't stay relevant. Stay relevant, stay fresh, you know, stay in the culture. Like I said, they've weathered so many storms. My mom reads people.
Jen Sullivan
I love a good human interest people story. I love a beauty story. They do a great job. So thank you so much, people.
Jess Matlin
Thank you.
Jen Sullivan
That was awesome, wasn't it?
Jess Matlin
That was like the biggest surprise. Awesome.
Jen Sullivan
What else were you doing this week besides celebrating your nomination?
Jess Matlin
I was out and about. Okay. I definitely. When I raise my wand, you're going to understand, like, it all circles back. It all circles back.
Jen Sullivan
Okay, okay.
Jess Matlin
But I was out and about this week. Earlier in the week, I went to such an industry event. Okay. It was like super industry. I went to the hair brained Awards. Now, the hairbrained awards are for hairstylists. We're not talking about a product launch for, like, the opening of a serum, okay?
Jen Sullivan
First, let me tell you what it's not.
Jess Matlin
No. This is for working hairstylists who are celebrating each other's artistry. And that was so cool. Cause I went to support a friend, but I was there. I saw a few people who I knew that have, like, you know, worked with over the years. But it was really fun. One of the categories was best podcast Hair Focus. A hair podcast. Yeah. So I just wanna give a shout out to hairdistry. I'm gonna give a listen to that. But it was like, they have a great tagline. It was like your day off podcast. So it was looking around their Instagram.
Jen Sullivan
Do they publish on Mondays?
Jess Matlin
I wonder if they do. That would make so much sense. But it was like very technical. Hairstylists talking to hairstylists. So I'm gonna do a little hat tip to them because it was just cool to see another podcast.
Jen Sullivan
Raisa Wanda Hairstyle Love. A niche beauty podcast.
Jess Matlin
Y. I mean, from one to another, like, supporting the podcast.
Jen Sullivan
I see you hairdistry. I just wanna keep saying hairdistry until it rolls off the ground.
Jess Matlin
It was cool. It was cool. And then I went to founder maid, which I did last year.
Jen Sullivan
So I forgot you had that this week. I would have come and supported you like I did last year.
Jess Matlin
How did you know? We missed you, Jen. We missed you. It was great. So it was a panel. I was doing a panel with all of these amazing founders. I saw some of our past fat mascara guests. Sloane Stevens looking incredible.
Jen Sullivan
Yes. Her beauty line just launched.
Jess Matlin
Yes. Doc and Glow. She had a boot because she'd hurt her foot. And then she put on, like, her little loafers for the talk. Leah Yu from Crave. She is killing it. She's doing so well with her brand.
Jen Sullivan
I love the way they speak to their consumers. Yeah. And they're just so professional of me. I love the way they speak to the. The products are great too. I just. I just really champion their transparency in marketing.
Jess Matlin
She's so brave, though. Like, she was on another. There were two panels. One was by Kelly Kovac. She did the other panel. And so she's from Knockout Beauty. She asked her a question and like, I don't know, like, she just kind of gives. Leah. She just gives, like, the real deal. Like, she's talking about over consumerism in the industry. I'm like, it's one thing to talk about it on your own platform or like on a podcast with just you and me. It's another thing in front of the.
Jen Sullivan
Entire beauty industry to be like. But she just making Too many products sometimes.
Jess Matlin
But she does it with such grace. It makes me want to buy more of her stuff, which is like the magic trick that she pulls off. So.
Jen Sullivan
Isn't that funny?
Jess Matlin
Yeah. But I got to interview Tracey Anderson, who is the fitness guru, you know, the dancer.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, I have taken one of her classes.
Jess Matlin
How did you do?
Jen Sullivan
I'm fairly athletic. You're very athletic. I am fairly coordinated. I don't think I've sweat more in my entire life. You are like. I think I was sweating because I was trying to remember the movements that I meant to do. Like kickball change over here, over there. Now we're lifting. You don't stop for 45 minutes. It was probably one of the best workouts in my life. It was insane.
Jess Matlin
She. She is something. I wanted to talk to her more offline, but it was more of just a panel moment.
Jen Sullivan
Is she that energetic a person? Because when I took her class, she was the instructor and I was like, how is she bringing this much energy day in, day out?
Jess Matlin
I don't know. I. I have no idea.
Jen Sullivan
Talk to her some more and get the tips for us.
Jess Matlin
She has a new fragrance called Spring Break Sweat and she's a whole lifestyle.
Jen Sullivan
That's what I had in her class.
Jess Matlin
She was cool. So anyway, I could go on and on, but it was very cool event and thank you, founder maid for having me and maybe Tracy Anderson, we can, we can have a little chitty chat one day.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jess Matlin
Maybe you could work Jenna me out.
Jen Sullivan
I don't know about that. Nobody needs that. Nobody needs a live workout with Tracy Anderson. Remember the one time we did hot yoga together? I've never seen you, I'd never seen you sweat so much in my life.
Jess Matlin
So. It was a tomato. I thought I was gonna go to cardiac arrest.
Jen Sullivan
We both turned so red that day. What was up with that?
Jess Matlin
Oh my God. I don't know.
Jen Sullivan
I do. My yoga studio is a, A warm yoga. It's a tangerine here in Brooklyn.
Jess Matlin
The one that's warm or is it like hot?
Jen Sullivan
It's 90 degrees in there. That's hot, right?
Jess Matlin
That's really. I don't know what the other one was, but I literally, I was not. Okay.
Jen Sullivan
She's going to stick to her aloe moves where it's nice in your air conditioned home.
Jess Matlin
I like to be in a sweatsuit though. When I do yoga, I like to.
Jen Sullivan
Be all the more crazy. To download the Ella moves app and use code fat mask. Actually don't remember our code and I don't know if they're still sponsored, but I love that app. All right, that was. You've been busy, girl. We. And you've been collecting some news for us, right?
Jess Matlin
Oh yeah, I'm doing the news today too.
Jen Sullivan
She's leading the news because we haven't seen her for two weeks. So flat out I I can't wait. All right, let's get into it.
Jess Matlin
Foreign.
Jen Sullivan
Listen, there are so many skincare products on the market and you know, I will try most of them once, but for me to use something more than once and make a real habit of it, it's got to work. That's why I love Ritual's hair. It's a multi step skincare in one daily supplement and it features two of the best clinically studied ingredients shown to help minimize wrinkles and hydrate skin. And now it's part of my everyday skincare routine. I got in the habit of taking it daily by putting the cute little purple jar right next to my sunscreen. It looks nice on my vanity and let's be honest, I love that. But once I stuck with the habit, I really noticed a difference in my skin. I am not the only one. In a clinical study, subjects reported an improvement in skin elasticity, glow and radiance in 90 days and ritual hyacinth led to a 2.9 times increase in skin smoothness within 90 days as compared to placebo. I also like that they're easy to swallow. The capsules sort of taste like vanilla. They're not all weird and fishy like some other supplements. Plus, Ritual works with world class certification bodies to validate their products and it's a certified B core with supplements that are vegan, gluten free and made traceable. Jess Matlin
Okay, lots of fun news this week. Kicking it off with what I'm calling the campaign of the year.
Jen Sullivan
God.
Jess Matlin
What Campaign of the year?
Jen Sullivan
Okay.
Jess Matlin
Charlotte Tilbury, Pillow talk Beauty, Soulmates. I'm screaming, starring Kim Cattrall. Apparently, as Jen and I were prepping for the episode this morning, I told her this was my marquee item. She did not.
Jen Sullivan
Wait, let me see what I wrote in the doc. Can we drop this one?
Jess Matlin
I thought that was borderline psychotic because this to me was a seismic ad.
Jen Sullivan
And then I wrote just feels kind of meh. Tell me why you're so excited about this.
Jess Matlin
Oh, my God, I'm so excited. Okay.
Jen Sullivan
I mean, I know Charlotte Tilbury is like, one of your favorite brands. Pillow Talk has been in your rotation for a while.
Jess Matlin
Well, okay. When Charlotte came out, it was. She did something that, like, no one else did. It was so smart. Correct. Coming out with the sophisticate, the rock chick, the blah, blah. Like, it was such a. Such a simple twist to, like, oh, build personality archetypes instead of just selling product by shade. Right.
Jen Sullivan
And she was able to combine, like, a trashy glamour and a sophisticated glamour in one, in a campy, kind of perfect way.
Jess Matlin
And then also the idea of, like, I've bottled my tricks of the trade for you. Like, if you have hazel eyes, this, like, she did like 45 different really clever things at once, and it was just like, boom, like bat people over the head. Also, her formulations were incredible.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah.
Jess Matlin
I haven't been plugged into the launches that she's done in the same way that I was in, like.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, lots. Because a lot of them are flankery. To me, it's like, pillow Talk works. Now we're doing Pillow Talk this.
Jess Matlin
They've come out fast and furious and just truly have not been as plugged in for like, a few different reasons. Yeah.
Jen Sullivan
And they've bestselling skus and they're leaning heavily into this. Like, yeah, I'm ready for something new. So is Kim Cattrall.
Jess Matlin
New Kim Cattrall. Like, when she was in Just like that, her cameo was so hyped. And then she was on for, like, 74 seconds. What it took to get her on her own freaking. Basically. I'm calling it her own show. I know it's not her own show, so please don't come at me. But in, like, her own universe, to get her to come back to her own universe was so difficult. And then when she was on, like, everyone who was into Sex and the City was gagging for, like, anything from her and dissecting it to book her, feel it for anything feels so difficult for something that she didn't create herself.
Jen Sullivan
But only because we know of all the contract negotiations of the Sex and the City follow up and how that was difficult. Maybe.
Jess Matlin
Oh, the lore. The lore. I'm just going to say the lore.
Jen Sullivan
Maybe all you need is a paycheck and not to be Sex and City. And she'll do it. I don't know.
Jess Matlin
Certainly not. Because then she could. I'm sure she could start 80,000 shows.
Jen Sullivan
She could have been in the substance.
Jess Matlin
Yes. She's enigmatic. She does. What's that amazing quote she has said recently? She's like, I don't want to be anywhere for an hour where I'm not having fun.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, see, maybe I don't follow the career of Kim Cattrall as closely as you.
Jess Matlin
No, she's a bad bitch.
Jen Sullivan
I literally wrote. I was like, do we have to tell people who Kim Cattrall is? Cause I was convinced most of you wouldn't know who she was without, like, a reminder. And Jess was like, no, people know who she is.
Jess Matlin
She's like a modern hero to so many people.
Jen Sullivan
Okay, so we're of an age. I'm Gen X, you're late. Millennial. Do you think Gen X and Gen Z and Gen Alpha know who Kim Cattrall is? Do they rewatch Sex and the City the way they rewatch, like, Friends and all those other shows?
Jess Matlin
I think so, yeah. It's on Max now.
Jen Sullivan
I know people are rewatching Girls, which is like a millennial show, but the younger people are watch. Okay. I don't know. I just never know with celebrities anymore who has large pop culture reach because everything's so niche.
Jess Matlin
I don't think Sex and the City is the furthest thing from niche. It's the reason why the Village works the way it does today. Yeah.
Jen Sullivan
And we're a beauty podcast. I think you're right. Our listeners know who Kim Cattrall is in Sex and the City.
Jess Matlin
Kim Cattrall stands for something more than her, than just Samantha and just her character. She is like doing it all iconic. Yeah.
Jen Sullivan
Okay. All right.
Jess Matlin
I think it's incredible booking. Congratulations. Charlotte Tilbury. And I need to have that lip color.
Jen Sullivan
Well, I love her just for she put Philly on the map with Mannequin the movie. And that's when my hometown had its own movie moment in the 80s. Okay, moving on.
Jess Matlin
Next up, as the beauty world turns. That's right. I'm reinventing my business desk segment.
Jen Sullivan
Rebrand.
Jess Matlin
Yeah. You know what, why not rebrand? It's spring.
Jen Sullivan
So business desk is now. As the beauty world turns.
Jess Matlin
As the beauty world turns. Okay, and we've got to get some great music for that. Holly Thaggert is stepping down from Supergoop. She is the founder, she's a chairwoman. But she's going to be even more removed from the business now. She doesn't own the brand anymore. In 2021, an investment firm, Blackstone, they acquired a majority stake in the business. Brand's now in Europe, it's in China. So I remember when it came out and it was like the kind of the cool sunscreen. And now there's so many sort of imitators. But Supergoop still has this huge foothold in that space. In a memo, Lisa, Lisa Sakini, an insider memo.
Jen Sullivan
Go on.
Jess Matlin
The brand's chief executive, she said that while Holly is stepping away from the day to day governance, she's going to continue to be a champion of Supergoop. Listen, we don't know what this means, but I think we can expect Supergoop to expand even further. I wouldn't be surprised, Jen. I have no evidence of this. If they expand into different product categories.
Jen Sullivan
Who knows, 100% they're gonna expand away from the original mission or not away from it. They're gonna expand on it.
Jess Matlin
Yeah, they've always been like about health, like healthy skin. I feel like that's always been Holly's mission. It's been quite high minded, the mission. But it's also a really fun brand and like a very much a family brand.
Jen Sullivan
Maybe they can do your SPF hair spray that you wanted, not a hairspray with hold. But I know you've asked several founders we've had on over the years that you want something with sunscreen, clear red so it stays in the sun. And they're always like, oh, it's a uv. And you're like, no, no, I want straight up sunscreen. But not to feel like sunscreen.
Jess Matlin
They're by no means like an affordable sun care brand. They're not trying to be drugstore. But I wonder if they're gonna go higher, if they're gonna go lower. I know a lot of parents like the brand. Cause they make those giant jugs of supergoop. I don't know. It'll be interesting.
Jen Sullivan
I just love. They did a lot for the category of getting sun awareness and getting people to be protecting their skin from skin cancer and all that bad stuff.
Jess Matlin
So that's great. That's for sure.
Jen Sullivan
Holly, take your paycheck and go. I love it.
Jess Matlin
Can we talk? TikTok.
Jen Sullivan
Yes.
Jess Matlin
Fragrances. That is. Okay. You've got so many compelling content creators right now. And people are taking chances on blind buying right now because of TikTok. Before, it felt like a little bit of a wild west, but now people, they're seeing a lot more like reviews. Things are trending more. So blind buying is a much of a. It feels like a safer bet. And also people are looking for dupes of their favorite fragrances.
Jen Sullivan
Technically, isn't it as Nomic buying Because you can see the bottle. You just can't smell it. I need to rebrand that as Nomic Vodka, please.
Jess Matlin
I don't think I need to ever hear that word again.
Jen Sullivan
Okay.
Jess Matlin
As nomic buying. Actually, that could. Actually, I could see that becoming a hashtag.
Jen Sullivan
Shut me up.
Jess Matlin
As nomic buying. And that's my friend Jen.
Jen Sullivan
I can't help myself. I can't help myself.
Jess Matlin
You know what? Don't. Don't help yourself.
Jen Sullivan
Don't help.
Jess Matlin
Okay. Don't help. Yeah, please don't help yourself.
Jen Sullivan
Just saw the nerd emoji drop before.
Jess Matlin
My face as I started talking. No, it's okay. I have my own things too. It'll come up. It probably already came up. People are also looking for dupes of their fragrances that they're hearing about. This came up. Oh, my God. The Francis Kirkjan episode. This was like a hot topic.
Jen Sullivan
A hot take on dupes. Has so many comments. People are getting into it. On the. On the comments on if you can't.
Jess Matlin
Afford something that's, you know, a $350 fragrance, you're going to type in TikTok. What else smells like this? So Women's Wear Daily ran a piece about the fragrance phenomenon on TikTok. And I want to share the top five right now as right now in February. And honestly, I was a little surprised.
Jen Sullivan
And this is by getting talk, not necessarily translating to sales but just getting.
Jess Matlin
No, it's sales. It's sales.
Jen Sullivan
Sales. Okay, go on.
Jess Matlin
Yeah, yeah. No, it's not compet. Okay.
Jen Sullivan
Okay.
Jess Matlin
We're talking about the cold, hard cash. Okay? Like the bottom line. Okay. I'm gonna start with number five. The brand is called Tsetis S T T E S. Okay. It's a Brazilian brand. And their top product is Brazilian perfume 600 2.
Jen Sullivan
Do I smell a little doopy language in that one? I don't know. I'm sorry. Rio de Janeiro. Sol de Janeiro, Brazil. Numbered fragrances. That's what I'm saying. All right, keep going.
Jess Matlin
Okay, so, yeah, so Setes is hot. Okay. Then the next one is Paris Corner. The top product, Marshmallow Blush. Eau de Parfum. I'm not saying it's a dupe. I'm just telling you it's.
Jen Sullivan
No, no. It's just making me uncomfortable. The name.
Jess Matlin
I don't really love the name Marshmallow Blush. Well, a lot of people clearly like it. Okay. And it's. I think that the takeaway that I'm getting.
Jen Sullivan
It's $49.99.
Jess Matlin
So it's $49.99.
Jen Sullivan
Price to move.
Jess Matlin
Yeah, price to move is that. It's a gourmand. Then the next one is Fleur. Okay, I know this brand. Fleur. Their top product is Vanilla skin and heavy cream Body Mist Duo. I will say that sounds really nice. I think it's the heavy cream.
Jen Sullivan
Mm. Fleur does a nice gourmand, I'm not gonna lie. Again, a competitively priced perfume right there. The body mist version of vanilla skins. $38.
Jess Matlin
All right, now we're getting to the top two. Okay. Things are heating up. Armaf is the. Is the number two scent on TikTok right now. Selling this is mostly a brand that guys like. And their top product, though, is Armaf. Club de Nuit for women.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, interesting.
Jess Matlin
And this brand is very popular in the uae.
Jen Sullivan
Okay. I know I've seen Club de Nuit intense for men, but I didn't actually know there was a woman's version. All right, keep going.
Jess Matlin
And then the top. Top one is Latafa. And this is a very woody scent. Okay. It's founded in the 80s in the United Arab Emirates. The brands Woody musky scents. This is from Women's Wear Daily. As you could probably tell, I'm reading, the brand's woody musky scents are seeing new resonance among Gen Z and millennial fragrance lovers as Oud perfumes continue to rise in popularity.
Jen Sullivan
And they have multiple fragrances, but a lot of them are based in that Middle Eastern heritage of oud and woods and incense. Yeah.
Jess Matlin
The top one is Assad for Men Eau de Parfum.
Jen Sullivan
I feel like I'm at the Fragrance Foundation Awards. Assad for Men Eau de Parfum. You know, they always have the announcer and I'm always like, do they hire someone French? How does. How are they hitting every time with the pronunciation?
Jess Matlin
But I think that speaks to a lot of men on TikTok, right?
Jen Sullivan
Yes. And clearly these brands are putting their big marketing budgets into TikTok. Only because you're not. I don't often see street billboards for these brands and you don't see them on the regular, you know, where they put posters up throughout New York City and things like that. They're doing a lot of digital marketing.
Jess Matlin
And this reporting, by the way, was by Noor Labad.
Jen Sullivan
So thanks, Noor Lebad.
Jess Matlin
Yeah, really cool story. Loved it. And then finally, in other TikTok related news, Capcut, the video editing software they had. Okay, focus on. Had a filter called the Chubby Filter. If you haven't, this has been buzzing around the Internet for a few weeks now. Just to wrap this story up, this Chubby Filter was like created by a user. I don't know who, I don't know if they know who, but like a user generated filter and uploaded to TikTok. And by the way, Capcut and TikTok are owned by the same company, which you may have heard of, called ByteDance. I'm still so surprised. Like, TikTok app doesn't. Isn't like big enough to own itself, but whatever. That's like business, I guess.
Jen Sullivan
Remember they merged with. Musically.
Jess Matlin
Yes. Yeah. It's just all this stuff is like so crazy. Okay, so the Chubby Filter was created by this user uploaded. People would upload a photo of themselves, like a still photo, and then a filter would make them look heavier, like top to toe than they are. And I guess this was amusing to some people. And to some people, they said it was like motivating. They were all. I won't even get into the dark psychology of why this was phenomenon among some people.
Jen Sullivan
But I don't like it as much as I don't like a skinny filter.
Jess Matlin
Yeah, it's like both are bad. But if you go online and you read the different commentary, you can see, like, why this was so upsetting. I don't think I have to spell it out. Yeah, it's very mocking.
Jen Sullivan
They canceled that particular filter.
Jess Matlin
Correct.
Jen Sullivan
This also speaks to the larger question of like these social media platforms that do they police what is user generated content? I'm listening to that tell all from the meta author right now. I have it on audiobook and it's fascinating. Like it's the struggle of okay, we made this thing. Do we have to now also police what happens on it? And clearly it needs some policing.
Jess Matlin
So I don't think anyone's policing anything. That's why.
Jen Sullivan
Well, yeah, but they did turn off the filter. So yeah, after announcing that, we call that a win. I don't know. Thanks.
Jess Matlin
I don't know. But it's related, unrelated. It's like the skinny conversation is back in the news big time. Ooh, we just finished up a Fashion Week season for those who are plugged into that community.
Jen Sullivan
Fall 2025 fashion shows. New York, Paris, Milan. What'd you notice, Jess Matlin?
Jess Matlin
What do I notice? Well, there are a lot of trends that feel, I think, regressive and that's like a separate topic. But I feel like the pendulum is going backward. On the body image.
Jen Sullivan
Absolutely. On the body size, diversity and inclusivity on the floor, on the runways.
Jess Matlin
I think the topics that were important to maybe casting agents or design houses like a few years ago maybe aren't at the top of their list today. And why I'd love to have them here to represent themselves and talk about it. But what we do have are some facts. Vanessa Friedman did a great story in the New York times. Of the 20 most viewed shows at fashion week, only four included three models who were not. I don't say skinny because that's such a subjective thing, but were like not straight.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah. I mean the industry term by the agencies is mid size and plus size. Because then Vogue Business did that report. Of 8,703 looks in the 198 shows and presentations that just happened, 2% of those models were midsize or the looks, because it could be the same model size were midsize, 0.3% were plus size, meaning 97% of the models were skinny. And they had quoted a agency founder who said, and the skinny models are getting skinnier. Yeah, the peak apparently in body diversity on the runways was in 2021. And it has gone down since then. And the reasons people will blame GLP1s, but one of the, the agency founders, he was like, it's something deeper. It's like a swing away from social progressivism is his theory.
Jess Matlin
I think it's, I think that's a huge part of it. It's like, what are we?
Jen Sullivan
What are we? This was the first year that I was like, oh, it's glaring because I have trained my eye to expect body diversity. And when you don't see it, it feels uncomfortable. It feels really uncomfortable. I'm like, I don't mind a skinny person on a Runway. I want to see that too. But like, just the fact that you see the same size person coming down the Runway again and again and again, it's odd. I know that used to be the norm, but it's just so odd to me.
Jess Matlin
Had so much conversation of how bad it was. Of course it was, how damaging it was, and here we are, and it's like, what was all of that for? It feels like it was a waste of time.
Jen Sullivan
I don't think it was a waste of time because the fact that I am clocking it and you're clocking it and the industry's clocking it makes us realize that we all did learn something from that and we appreciated the.
Jess Matlin
But younger people who didn't have.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, yeah. Who didn't see the five year span when we had a teeny, tiny bit of body diversity, they'll be like, oh, miss that when. When it's all said, done. But maybe, maybe us talking about it will help shift it back again. Like, if so we can feel like.
Jess Matlin
It doesn't have to be this way.
Jen Sullivan
I mean, if everybody hops on the comments every time they see a Runway show and are like, I'm sorry, why is everybody, like, rail hungry thin? No, like, I know that some people's body types look like that naturally, but it's just the more we talk about it, one hopes that it'll get heard.
Jess Matlin
It gave us the courage, the confidence, the language. What is it like, you know, you need the words.
Jen Sullivan
The fact that Vogue is doing a body size inclusivity report. If you told me in the year 2002 that Vogue was doing a body inclusivity report, I would be like, say what now? You know, like, so at least it.
Jess Matlin
Would be like, I can't even. The silence that would fall over the room.
Jen Sullivan
I would be very confused. So it's good that they're doing that and they're still doing the report. So at least we're like getting numbers on this. And it's not just a feeling we're all having. There's like, you're so positive. Well. Cause I want to keep talking about it. Cause I don't want. I know, I want to champion body diversity, don't you?
Jess Matlin
But I do yeah, yeah.
Jen Sullivan
And just diversity.
Jess Matlin
Oh, my God. That didn't sound very convincing if it wasn't clear. No, I was like, I do. I do. No, I'm literally thinking about just imagery. Yeah, yeah.
Jen Sullivan
That just paraded across our eyeballs.
Jess Matlin
Yes.
Jen Sullivan
Thank you, fashion industry. Well, I can end on. I don't know if this is a positive note, but I do have neighborhood news for you.
Jess Matlin
Neighborhood news is always good.
Jen Sullivan
I know you love a little neighborhood news. And the neighborhood is New York City, so I don't know if you heard. I was talking with Julie last week about my trip to other ship, the Bathhouse here in New York. Literally, after I left, like, the next day on Reddit, this one subreddit got fired up about another bathhouse that's very popular in New York City called Bathhouse. They have one in Williamsburg.
Jess Matlin
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jen Sullivan
And then New York Mag wrote a story basically being like, here's what you might have seen online. And I cannot verify that if this is true. There was a video of bath house taken, and it looks like there's tiny worms on the floor. Ew.
Jess Matlin
Oh, I saw that. Ew. Yes.
Jen Sullivan
And then six people said that they got a UTI when they went to bathhouse, and then there were issues of mold. I just want to point out you can get a UTI from any body of water. The cleanest pool, the cleanest hot tub. There's bacteria on our skin and bacteria in water all the time. It's not like a higher bacteria load in their water leads automatically to a uti. I'm like, wash when you get out of the pool, take your wet bathing suit off. So I don't know about the claims of that. The worms. No one can verify this video. They won't say who did it. It was apparently a former employee, and to me, it looks a little AI ish. So I'm like, what if you're a former disgruntled employee and you want to, like, fake a video?
Jess Matlin
I'm not saying they don't know who the video is from.
Jen Sullivan
The journalist who wrote it said a former employee sent it to them, but they haven't named the source, and you can't even see the original video anywhere except for that clip. The only thing that has been proven true from this story is they reached out to the New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and they're investigating mold concerns because people have talked about smelling mold and seeing mold, which is a concern of many bath houses. But as of January, they had passed all their codes. I guess you have to stay on top of that. But I don't know. People are, like, kind of grossed out by that.
Jess Matlin
If it's not been proven, how could this person write a story about this business?
Jen Sullivan
Because they're writing about the Reddit. This is, like, what people call journalism sometimes. I'm writing about the rumors, not, you know, and they reached out to the company for comment, and the comment was very clearly, we've passed all our codes. This is not true.
Jess Matlin
But you know, what's like. That's. Yeah, this kind of stuff, like, really bothers me because this happened recently with a business, like a local business near my house, and somebody, like, got on Facebook and said, like, I saw this. This incident happened. And it's like, why is this person opening themselves up? The complainer to what I immediately am thinking is, like, legal. If I were the business owner, I would come after them.
Jen Sullivan
It's really hard to. I mean, it's a free speech. It's really hard to prove libel. It's really hard to prove slander. People are allowed to say what they want, but it gives them the freedom. It makes it really hard for small business owners. I know we have salon owners. I know we have makeup artists who deal with this with Yelp all the time. There's no legal repercussions. And even if you do want to take legal action, it's so expensive to do so.
Jess Matlin
It just feels so unethical on the part of the person who's writing this stuff.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, duh. And think about it. If you're pissed off at a business for another reason, if you're a nefarious character, you can just say whatever you want online, just like, just asking questions.
Jess Matlin
We've talked about that.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, I dislike it. It makes it so easy to slander a business, and then the business owner has a lot of trouble counteracting that.
Jess Matlin
And they have a trail following them for the rest of their entire lives while this person is happily going on to slander another business.
Jen Sullivan
I mean, I don't. We don't know what the case would be.
Jess Matlin
No, I'm just going to be.
Jen Sullivan
No.
Jess Matlin
But, like, it does nothing to them.
Jen Sullivan
No, of course. Because they can also do a blind item, like, on Reddit or just, like, some fake Instagram account to say it. So I don't know. It also does a disservice to journalists who take these rumors and then just be like, we saw a rumor. And so they. They have their ethical guidelines, but the guideline is they're playing it safe because they're like, we're not saying it's true. We're just talking about the fact that people are talking about it.
Jess Matlin
And I'm like, that's not journalism to me.
Jen Sullivan
It's not really. But anyway, of course they should have clean places and they are looking into the mold issues. But I just was like, that worm video freaked me out. Cause I was like, I don't think this is real. But we'll see. By the time this airs, we might have more information. I'll stay on top of this local news story for everybody. Don't you worry. Let's go raise some wands, shall we?
Jess Matlin
Let's raise wand.
Ryan Reynolds
This is a mini meditation guided by Bombus. Repeat after me. I'm comfy, comfy, comfy.
Jen Sullivan
I'm cozy, cozy.
Ryan Reynolds
I have zero blisters on my toes. And that's because I wear Bombas, the.

Jess Matlin
Hi, I'd like to raise a wand to Seasons and Hemispheres perfumes. You were talking about bond number nine and Seasons and Hemispheres is a little artisanal brand of botanical perfume that is inspired by Prince Edward county, which is in Ontario, Canada. And each of the seasons is represented, and it evokes each season in Prince Edward county, which is a beautiful little resort area in Ontario. So thanks. That's what I wanted to raise a wand to.
Jen Sullivan
Okay. Unnamed listener. Thank you. I know where you're from. The brand she's talking about is actually Good Things Organics. So those are two collections she mentions. There's a Seasons collection and a Hemispheres collection. And, like, don't you want to know what spring in Prince Edward county smells like up in Ontario?
Jess Matlin
I'd love to know.
Jen Sullivan
I love how I say up when there's people that live there and they are on that latitude. Sorry. In Ontario. Just, like, every time I say it, I look, my brain sees a map, and it goes up. You know what I mean?
Jess Matlin
I get it. Yeah.
Jen Sullivan
I bet that smells delicious. And I bet there's more of these. You found the one from Ireland, that one perfumer that, like, he was at Disney World, right. And he. No, it was. It was Denmark. It was Scandinavian. Like, what are the other fragrance lines that are inspired by a very specific place? I want to know. Don't you?
Jess Matlin
I would like to know.
Jen Sullivan
Besides, of course, Bond number nine, Greenpoint, the founder of the brand, by the way, emailed me, and she's like, do you want a bottle of Greenpoint? I heard you talking about it on the podc. I was like, that's so nice. Well, call us the Raisa one. Lines are open. I need some great products that you guys are loving. Call us 646-481-8182. Or text us at that number or send us a voice memo. You can text us a voice memo. 646-481-8182. You can email us at infoatmascara.com, but I'm still curious, really, about. Does your, where you're from, have its own fragrance line? And if not, what should it smell like? Did we ever do your Jersey hometown? We did. Yours was, like, a little. I remember yours.
Jess Matlin
I don't think we did, but did we?
Jen Sullivan
I got Garrett. Garrett told us what his. Garrett's was the best. Of course. It's like, North.
Jess Matlin
What was Garrett?
Jen Sullivan
He did North Carolina, and it was magnolia. It was a salty floral with a zing because he wanted to give it a little, like, a vinegary thing to represent North Carolina barbecue.
Jess Matlin
Oh, okay.
Jen Sullivan
And then Julie's from, like, the horse countryside of Philadelphia. So like, a county outside of Philadelphia. And she. It was very horse inspired. We decided she should team up with Maison d'ho to really get that made for Chasper County, Pennsylvania.
Jess Matlin
Mine would be. I grew up and there were so many trees, like the tallest tree. The tallest trees around my house, and so many in the back of my house for, like, acres. And they smelled even in the summer. You just smelled the leaves that were just constantly churning, you know, like the turnover leaves. And of course, in the fall, it was like, the best. So it would be like that fall crisp leaf smell and then, like, mixed with grass, like my dad cutting the grass in the summer. So it's not really about the New Jersey as the place. It's more like.
Jen Sullivan
It's like a late summer to fall Jersey season. Maybe we're inspired by this Prince Edward county line. The seasons in Jersey.
Jess Matlin
So good.
Jen Sullivan
You do love falling leaf smell.
Jess Matlin
Yeah. And like. Yeah, like. And like the chimney fire of the season.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah.
Jess Matlin
Yeah.
Jen Sullivan
We gotta wait six months for that. We're barely into spring here, so.
Jess Matlin
I know, I know.
Jen Sullivan
And Q, just talking about how hot and sweaty she is.
Jess Matlin
Wait, wait, can we do a segue to my razor?
Jen Sullivan
Yeah.
Jess Matlin
It's a perfect segue.
Jen Sullivan
You're singing nine Years later. What's that thing called we do at the end of the show? Okay.
Jess Matlin
So you know, oh, my God, we've been doing this for nine years. Oh, my God. Okay. So lol, you know, I said I was like, bopping around all week and I'm like, I just need to slow down or whatever. That was the implication. My Razor 1 is not a beauty product, but it's incredible for beauty sleep and beauty rest when you're just hanging around the house. I found my favorite loungewear. You cannot wear this out, though. You cannot wear this to get, like, the dog. The dog.
Jen Sullivan
Oh, I love to hear people lounging because everybody's very specific about what comfort is. What is this?
Jess Matlin
I got my first pair two years ago, and now I got my second pair in December, and I think I might buy a third pair. They're on sale. Splendid. You know, Splendid. It's a brand.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah. They make, like, cottony T shirts and tank tops.
Jess Matlin
Yeah. But like, very high quality, like, Tencel.
Jen Sullivan
Jersey kind of cotton.
Jess Matlin
You got it.
Jen Sullivan
You got it. Yeah. It's very drapey and nice.
Jess Matlin
Yes, they. The cotton is their specialty. They have a fuzzy sweater PJ set. So it is hot. Okay. This is not for, like, summer nights.
Jen Sullivan
Okay.
Jess Matlin
But I wear it year round because it's always cold in the apartment. Fuzzy sweater.
Jen Sullivan
She Just sent me a link. I got to look at this. Okay. Keep it.
Jess Matlin
Fuzzy sweater. PJ set. There's a new colorway that's on sale. Well, an old colorway. Because it's on sale. They're trying to get rid of it. Final sale. Pink hearts, fuzzy sweater set. I have a black one. That's my fancy.
Jen Sullivan
It looks like boucle. You look like one of those trendy boucle chairs.
Jess Matlin
It.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, it's like a boucle sweatsuit.
Jess Matlin
It's a boucle sweatsuit. Yeah. Then I have one that's baby blue with, like, hearts or snowflakes or something. Baby blue stars.
Jen Sullivan
Okay.
Jess Matlin
And now this is a pink one with hearts. This is the best purchase I've ever made, because when I come home from work or an event, I rip off my clothes and I put these. Sorry for the image.
Jen Sullivan
Everyone's the visual. I pictured a bodice ripper, like. Like one of those romance novels. And, like, a wind machine. Cue the wind machine. And j. Just ripping off her clothes and putting on this little cute clown suit.
Jess Matlin
Like, stumble, like. Like over the head. Like. Like falling. And I put these on, and I am in heaven. If you can get them out of the dryer. Oh, double whammy. Okay.
Jen Sullivan
Cozy.
Jess Matlin
They're too hot to sleep in sometimes.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah, they look toasty. These are the, like, let me eat dinner on the couch in front of the TV outfit.
Jess Matlin
They're genius. I have the cost per wear, like, a penny.
Jen Sullivan
They're not cheap. You need to get more, though, because that way you don't have to be washing them every two days. Like, you can have, like, five sets. We need you to.
Jess Matlin
Five sets.
Jen Sullivan
She's just like, we're running the wash just so I can wear these tomorrow when I get home from work. Thank you.
Jess Matlin
They're so good.
Jen Sullivan
Wait, question after. Because, you know, we had madame's sweat on last week. I was thinking about this with my pajamas, because I don't wash my sheets. I wash my sheets once a week, but I only wear pajamas once. And I was like, can I get away with wearing my pajamas two nights in a row? Do people do that? Right? Of course.
Jess Matlin
I wear mine a couple nights in a row.
Jen Sullivan
Okay. Okay. So that's not gross.
Jess Matlin
No, I don't. I don't listen if people think I'm.
Jen Sullivan
Gross that I don't shower every day, but I was like, oh, I wear fresh pajamas. But then I was like, I ended up buying all these quince pajamas because I liked the pajama set, and I thought you needed to have, like, fresh, clean pajamas every night. But then I was like, I don't really get them dirty, so.
Jess Matlin
No, if you're not getting them dirty, you're sleeping in them for, like. Yeah, I think you're fine.
Jen Sullivan
Okay, so you don't have your pink hearts fuzzy sweater PJ set from Splendid. You can get by with, like, a couple wears per.
Jess Matlin
Yes. They take up a lot of room, though, in your laundry basket and in your shelves.
Jen Sullivan
They're very cuddly drawers. They're very cuddly.
Jess Matlin
They're like therapy. I really, truly find them, like, very comforting.
Jen Sullivan
Maybe Marina can make us wait. Like a. They're, like, weighted. Like a. You know. Huggamals. Our friend Maria, who has huggamals, the weighted stuffies. They seem like a little bit of a weighted blanket vibe to them.
Jess Matlin
No, they're. They're light. They're light, but fluffy. Okay, got it. Got it. They figured it out. Splendid. Splendid. Call me. Okay.
Jen Sullivan
Code Fat mascara.
Jess Matlin
We'll get.
Jen Sullivan
Don't you want a code?
Jess Matlin
I would kill for a code.
Jen Sullivan
So go. We're gonna reach out. That was an excellent raza wand mine.
Jess Matlin
Thank you.
Jen Sullivan
Mine's so practical compared to that. But I did get to go with elf skiing last weekend. I don't know. I put it on the gram a little bit because I was excited. They invited media, like journalists to go skiing with them to try out their new elf skin sun touchable stick. They make inexpensive, great sunscreens. I know, because. Listen, Elf, I know you invited me skiing. We had so much fun. And it was because I was meant to talk about this Untouchable Invisistic. But in our bathroom, they also had this other product, and that's the one I want to raise a wand to.
Jess Matlin
Which. What is it?
Jen Sullivan
The E L F skins untouchable. All set for the Spun SPF 45 setting spray.
Jess Matlin
Oh, a setting spray with SPF.
Jen Sullivan
I know. You know how I've been getting into setting sprays? Because I'm like, oh, this is how you keep your makeup from disappearing all day. Well, I knew a couple brands that did them, but they were, like, sticky feeling. Because it's sunscreen. It makes perfect sense to have your SPF in your setting spray. And this one is not. Not sticky, and it's 14 bucks.
Jess Matlin
And if you love your skin care, sometimes it's like a buzzkill to put the SPF on top of the skincare, right?
Jen Sullivan
So you do your face, and you just set it with this spray. It's 2 ounces, so you can travel with it. So I also have been using it as, like, my body sunscreen or my, like, other areas when. Because it doesn't feel sticky. Like a. Like a really and natural finish. Not too shiny. My one thing is, though, let your mascara dry before you set. You. I did it once where, like, my mascara had just been put on, and, you know, when the mascara is still wet, and then I sprayed the setting spray and it ran a little bit. So you have to just wait for your mascara to dry your makeup, which is probably true of all setting sprays. So, like, let your makeup sit for 30 seconds. I mean, this was like, I did it two seconds. 30 seconds. Shake up the little sun touchables. Spritz, spritz, spritz. You just got SPF 45 and your makeup's gonna stay put. Like, who doesn't want that?
Jess Matlin
I love that.
Jen Sullivan
I'm raising a wand to it.
Jess Matlin
I wanna try that, actually.
Jen Sullivan
I'm gonna get you one.
Jess Matlin
Please, please.
Jen Sullivan
I will, I will. I'll put a link to it, too, because it's, like, I think it's really good for travel because the price isn. Because I'm always nervous, even though it's under 3 ounces, that the TSA is going to take it. So I'm, like, not, like, going to go up and put August in his bot or sunscreen in my carry on. You kidding me? If they take that, forget about it. It's like, if they must take the elf, I hope they use.
Jess Matlin
I wonder if they use that stuff. I feel like they definitely, like, I am sure.
Jen Sullivan
Do you think there's, like, a TSA agent out there with the greatest skin ever? Because they're just collecting all the stuff.
Jess Matlin
I do. I do.
Jen Sullivan
There's probably some rule about what they have to do with it. I'm going to look into that hot investigative report. Oh, I'm on it. I'm on it.
Jess Matlin
That would be a good story. Yeah.
Jen Sullivan
Yeah. Where does it all go? Well, get your beauty sleep and dream about that because, like, where does it all go?
Jess Matlin
I know.
Jen Sullivan
And we'll see you on Friday. See a very, very, very exciting interview.

Fat Mascara Podcast Episode 572 Summary
Episode Title: Body Diversity, TikTok Perfumes & Our People Magazine Beauty Podcast Nod
Release Date: April 2, 2025
Hosts: Jennifer Sullivan & Jessica Matlin
[02:04] Jen Sullivan announced with excitement that Fat Mascara has been nominated for a People Reader's Choice Poll Award as part of their 2025 recognition for the most beautiful people.
Jen Sullivan [02:04]: "Fat Mascara is nominated for a People Reader's Choice poll award as part of their Reader's Choice poll for the most beautiful people of 2025."
Jess Matlin expressed gratitude towards People Magazine and highlighted the surprise nature of the nomination.
Jess Matlin [02:14]: "Yes, yes, yes. Okay, first of all, thank you, People magazine."
The hosts discussed the various fun questions included in the poll, such as favorite beauty podcasts, and encouraged listeners to vote for them, emphasizing the ease and short duration of the poll.
Jen Sullivan [03:05]: "If you feel like doing it, I'll put the URL for the voting in the episode notes."
Jess Matlin shared her recent experiences attending the Hairbrained Awards, an event celebrating hairstylists' artistry. She also attended a panel hosted by Founder Maid, where she interacted with past guests like Sloane Stevens and Leah Yu from Crave.
Jess Matlin [04:21]: "I went to support a friend, but I was there. I saw a few people who I knew that have, like, you know, worked with over the years."
Jen Sullivan reminisced about previous events, expressing her desire to support Jess in future panels.
Jen Sullivan [05:38]: "I would have come and supported you like I did last year."
The conversation delved into the challenges faced by founders like Leah Yu, who candidly discussed issues like over-consumerism in the beauty industry during panels.
Jess Matlin [06:19]: "She's just so brave, though. Like, she was on another... she just kind of gives, like, she just gives, like, the real deal."
A significant portion of the episode focused on the regressive trends in body diversity within the fashion industry. Vanessa Friedman's report in The New York Times highlighted that out of the 20 most viewed shows at Fashion Week, only four featured models who were not classified as "straight" (mid-size or plus-size).
Jen Sullivan [26:07]: "Only four included three models who were not. I don't say skinny because that's such a subjective thing, but were like not straight."
Jen and Jess expressed their discomfort and disappointment over the decline in diverse body representations, noting that body diversity peaked in 2021 but has since waned.
Jen Sullivan [26:02]: "Absolutely. On the body size, diversity and inclusivity on the floor, on the runways."
They discussed possible reasons behind this regression, including a perceived swing away from social progressivism within the industry.
Jess Matlin [26:41]: "The skinny models are getting skinnier... it's something deeper. It's like a swing away from social progressivism is his theory."
The hosts emphasized the importance of continuing to champion body diversity and keeping the conversation alive to potentially reverse these trends.
