Proverbs: Wisdom on Humility

Humility begins with a fear of the Lord, demonstrates a teachable spirit, honors others, and does not praise oneself or seek praise from others. Scripture tells us that God honors the humble and will exalt them in due time. If Jesus willingly humbled himself by laying aside the glory He received in heaven, we should not think highly of ourselves but cultivate a humble spirit.

Although the topic of "how to" do a Bible translation can fill several college-level courses, our attention was drawn to the vast need of translation. More that three thousand languages need the Scripture translated. The task is enormous, and the time it takes from start to finish can sometimes be 20 to 30 years or even more. We spent a few moments talking about research that a little team of our volunteers has been doing to use artificial intelligence to speed up the translation process.

We thought through an important sidebar to this, which concerns the current debate over how to think about modern Israel in relation to God's promises concerning the future nation. Current events cannot negatively impact our view that God will certainly fulfill His promises to the nation of Israel, because God's promises are irrevocable.

We closed with the words of two convicting hymns. One of them had these words: "It is because I know life's thread is slender, but one short hour, one little stretch of road. This is part of the larger Bible translation process in which we work to encourage the ongoing, systematic use of the Bible. It applies on an individual level (to you!) and to churches corporately. Scripture use includes people reading their Bibles at home, and churches reading the Bible in public services. It includes living out the words of Scripture at home and in the world, giving people tools to help them understand the Bible (like devotional material, teaching curriculum, etc.) We looked at some Scripture Engagement material from one Bible translation society called Bibles International.

4w ago00:33:46Tap to summarizeVarious July 5, 2026 PM.To prepare our hearts to partake of the Lord's Table, Pastor Matt reviewed the texts of Scripture that talk about the plant called Hyssop. Hyssop (related to our modern oregano) was used in the ceremony of cleansing a leper or someone who had touched a dead body by the sprinkling of blood or holy water. Hyssop appears in the ceremony of the first Passover, as well as at the cross when it was used to raise sour wine to our Lord's lips. Sin creates a similar kind of uncleanness as the ceremonial impurities of ancient Israel, and hyssop is an appropriate symbol of the sprinkling blood and clean water upon a person as a symbol of God’s cleansing. Our Lord’s self-sacrifice cleanses the Christian from guilt, as if using hyssop to sprinkle the blood of Christ upon the sinner.

It would be advantageous for them to do so (8:10) for among other reasons this key principle: they would reap many blessings. God blesses the righteous giver, so we must give joyfully and generously to experience God’s blessing. Our giving also helps others to give thanks to God.
