Hello everyone. Welcome to Follow him favorites. This is where John and I will share a single story to go with each week's lesson in the Come Follow Me manual this year. Now, John, the very first lesson this year is called the restoration of the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If you go down in the manual, there's a talk that is referenced. It's from Elder Uchtdorf, it's called are you sleeping through the restoration? And it made me think of a story for this week's Follow him favorites. So John, I'm going to expose a little bit of my own lack of spirituality here. Anybody who listens to the show enough knows that that's not a surprise. So this was back when Sarah and I didn't have any children. We flew out back east to see her sister and her sister's husband. This is Am and Derek Booth. They had a little boy named Broderick who we call Brody. So Brody was just a little two year old. I think at the time. We decided since we were out there that we should drive over to see the sacred grove. So the five of us drove out to see the grove. In my head I had this idea that the sacred grove would be a specific spot, 30 by 30 foot area where there would be a plaque or something that says this is where Joseph knelt and prayed. Now John, I've been there many times and so have you. It's not that way at all. It's a big vast area with pathways running through it. Well, John, can you imagine me not knowing that and being kind of irreverent? I threw Brody on my shoulders. He would direct me using my ears as handles. We were running and playing through these pathways. He was steering me into trees and there's people who were sitting on benches who looked up at us being really noisy and laughing, looking at us like we were crazy. And I thought, well, I don't know why these people are so uptight. Maybe they haven't seen the grove yet. So I kept going through and even Sarah looked at me and thought, huh, I guess he's just trying to be a fun uncle. Well, we did this, John, for 15 minutes and I'm still waiting. When are we going to get to the sacred grove? When my brother in law, Derek, he says to me, well, should we go? And I said, go where? He said, go get in the car. We haven't been to the sacred grove yet. He said, we've been in it this entire time. And John, I felt so terrible. I had disrupted everyone's experience in the Sacred grove, except for Brody's. I think he had a wonderful first time there. This two year old on my shoulders. I went, oh, no. I put Brody down and I said, I'll be right back. And I ran into the sacred grove and had like a 30 second spiritual moment where I tried to be calm and reverent. Now that when I go there, every time I think of that and I tell that story to groups I take there, I say, this whole thing is just so.
John Bytheway
You know.
Hank Smith
Yeah. I wonder if we could make this jump that oftentimes we think when the restoration happens, I want to be there. For right now, I'm not really going to pay attention or focus, but I'm going to be there. And what would the Lord might say, you're in it.
John Bytheway
You're in it.
Hank Smith
You're right. Now. Don't sleep through the restoration.
John Bytheway
Love that a lot. You could be right there and not even see it and not know it. Here we are. And how many times have we been told, Hank, that we're part of the greatest work that possibly have President Nelson? We're right in the middle of it. Don't sleep through it.
Hank Smith
Don't miss it. The title of my talk, I guess, would be are you goofing around through the restoration with your two year old nephew?
John Bytheway
With Brody.
Hank Smith
Yeah, Brody. So, Brody, if you're listening out there, I'm sorry that we're related. I feel terrible that you're associated with me. We hope you'll join us on our full podcast. It's called Follow Him. You can get it wherever you get your podcast. In fact, this year you can get it in Spanish, French and Portuguese. Please come find us and then come back here next week we'll do another Follow him favorites.
FollowHIM Podcast Summary
Episode: Sacred Grove Shenanigans • followHIM Favorites • December 30 - January 5 • Come Follow Me
Hosts: Hank Smith & John Bytheway
Release Date: December 26, 2024
In this episode of FollowHIM Favorites, hosts Hank Smith and John Bytheway delve into the first lesson of the year's Come, Follow Me manual: "The Restoration of the Fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ." This segment focuses on sharing personal stories that illuminate and enhance the weekly lessons, making the study both engaging and relatable for listeners across all ages.
Hank introduces the discussion by referencing Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf's talk titled "Are You Sleeping Through the Restoration?" This talk serves as a foundation for the episode's theme, prompting listeners to reflect on their awareness and appreciation of the ongoing restoration of the gospel.
Hank recounts a memorable experience from his past, highlighting his own moments of irreverence and the lessons learned therein.
Setting the Scene: Hank and his wife, Sarah, visit the Sacred Grove with their son, Broderick (affectionately known as Brody), along with Sarah's sister and her husband, Am and Derek Booth. Expecting to find a specific, confined space reserved for reflection, Hank's misunderstanding sets the stage for the ensuing events.
The Misguided Exploration:
Hank Smith [00:35]: "In my head I had this idea that the sacred grove would be a specific spot, 30 by 30 foot area where there would be a plaque or something that says this is where Joseph knelt and prayed."
Contrary to his expectations, the Sacred Grove is an expansive area with numerous pathways. Hank, perhaps seeking to inject some fun into the visit, tosses Brody onto his shoulders, inadvertently disrupting the serene atmosphere intended for spiritual reflection.
Hank Smith [01:10]: "He would direct me using my ears as handles. We were running and playing through these pathways... And I thought, well, I don't know why these people are so uptight."
Listeners can visualize Hank's playful yet misinformed approach, leading to puzzled and perhaps slightly annoyed onlookers witnessing the commotion.
The Moment of Realization: After 15 minutes of unintentional disruption, Derek Booth gently confronts Hank about their lack of progress toward the actual Sacred Grove.
Derek Booth [02:00]: "Should we go?"
Hank Smith [02:05]: "Go where?"
Derek Booth [02:07]: "Go get in the car. We haven't been to the sacred grove yet."
Hank experiences a moment of clarity, recognizing that their entire excursion had been within the Sacred Grove's bounds, yet he had failed to appreciate its sanctity.
Hank Smith [02:20]: "I felt so terrible. I had disrupted everyone's experience in the Sacred grove, except for Brody's."
This anecdote serves as a powerful metaphor for the episode's central message: the importance of being present and attentive to the ongoing restoration of the gospel, rather than being distracted or taking it for granted.
Hank Smith [03:21]: "Don't sleep through the restoration."
John echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that members are integral parts of the "greatest work" initiated by President Russell M. Nelson. The hosts stress the necessity of active participation and mindfulness to fully experience and contribute to the restoration's unfolding.
John Bytheway [03:44]: "Don't miss it."
Hank concludes by tying the personal story back to the broader theme of the restoration, encouraging listeners to remain vigilant and engaged in their spiritual journey. By sharing his youthful missteps in the Sacred Grove, Hank underscores the ease with which one can overlook profound spiritual experiences if not fully present.
Key Takeaways:
Awareness and Appreciation: It's essential to recognize and value the restoration of the gospel, ensuring that one does not take spiritual blessings for granted.
Mindful Participation: Active and respectful engagement in sacred settings enhances personal spiritual experiences and honors the collective reverence of the community.
Continuous Reflection: Regularly revisiting foundational teachings, such as those highlighted in Elder Uchtdorf's talks, can deepen one's understanding and commitment to the faith.
For those seeking to enrich their Come, Follow Me studies, this episode offers both personal reflection and practical insights, encouraging a more profound connection with the restoration narrative.
