This penultimate episode of a short series of the podcast called Tech Perspectives is brought to you in partnership with The Emergency Tech Show and the Police Digital Service. Catherine talks to Scot Dunn Chief Digital and Innovation Officer for Humberside Police. This conversation builds nicely on from those earlier in this series as we look at how a police force can innovate when it has limited budgets. Scot shares four innovations from his force: from the officer on the beat, to the victim who is having the worst day of their lives and just wants to know what’s going on, to an efficient way of running non-emergency call handling and ending with predicting officer wellbeing needs. It just shows innovation takes many forms, requires a healthy risk appetite and a willingness to be OK with failure because that's how you learn. In this episode of the pod, Catherine Levin gets into the detail about the on-call firefighting system with Craig Flannery. Craig is the Chief Fire Officer for Mid and West Wales and his service has large numbers of on-call firefighters, drawn from local communities, these are people who will drop everything to respond to fires. The on-call firefighter has a day job and offers 'availability' to the local fire station to respond to fires day and night. They talk about the system, how it works, how to recruit and retain staff and about innovation. Some of that innovation is about pay structures and it's also in the use of data to better understand the impact that one person's availability can have on the service's ability to respond.
