One day, my father just went to get my mother food. It's a regular night and he's going through a green light. A person ran, a red light, hit him and he died. So my father's taken out. Yeah, my father was taken out when I'm only 10 years of age. And so that was heavy. And I'm going to tell you why. Because my father was like the energetic one of the family and my mother was a disciplinarian. So now it went from a lot of energy in the house to where it felt like a cold garage. It's an ego that is untrained that creates a train wreck. But I say God never kills ego. He purifies it. So when you could purify the ego, you will not be stopped.
JoJo Simmons
What's good, everybody? It's your guy, JoJo Simmons. And welcome back to the For Good podcast, where we focus on the good, never the bad. And we're measured by what we do, not what we have. Today I'm sitting down with the comeback coach, Tim Story, who helped high performers, athletes, entertainers, and everyday people turn setbacks into setups for something bigger. This one's about mindset, faith growth, and what it really takes to make a comeback. Let's get into it. I appreciate you coming on the four girl podcast.
Tim Storey
Good to see you. I like your outfit today, man.
JoJo Simmons
Thank you, thank you. I appreciate it. I tried to. I tried to look good. I knew I was coming to sit down with Tim Story and I got a shout out. Obviously, the Miracle Mentality podcast that I was just a part of did a swap. In case you guys do see the cups, I'm making sure we make sure that he gets his branding in there.
Tim Storey
And that's real collaboration.
JoJo Simmons
That's what it's about. It's never about competition. It's about collaboration. So, you know, I'm here for that. But let's get into it. My brother, I definitely want to learn about you and what you have going on and all the great things that you've done in your life. So, you know you're known as the comeback coach.
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
What does a real Comeback actually mean to you?
Tim Storey
I think that, number one is that many times we have momentum.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
And when. Mostly when we're kids, there's a momentum. Most kids that come into a. A room with a lot of energy, almost with a shout. Yeah. But I like to say it this way. Life can knock the shout out of you. So knocking the shout out of you could be an illness when you're a child or your parents divorce. So now you have momentum, but now you had a challenge that. Let's call this a life interruption. So when a life interruption happens, that's where I come into people's lives.
JoJo Simmons
I love that. I like how you said that. You call it a life interruption.
Tim Storey
Life interruption.
JoJo Simmons
It's just an interruption. It ain't forever.
Tim Storey
Right.
JoJo Simmons
I love that. So what was a personal moment in your life where you had to live out that comeback message for yourself?
Tim Storey
Yeah. So for me, we had seven people in a two bedroom apartment in Compton. My father worked at a place called Bethlehem Steel. My mother worked at Winchell's donut Shop. So I never forget what my mother said. We might be lower income, but we're not lower class. So even though everything was cramped and crowded, there was, like, excellence within that situation. But one day my father just went to get my mother food. It's a regular night, and he's going through a green light. A person ran a red light, hit him, and he died. So my father's taken out.
JoJo Simmons
Sorry to hear that.
Tim Storey
Yeah, my father's taken out when I'm only 10 years of age. And so that was heavy. And I'm going to tell you why. Because my father was like the energetic one of the family, and my mother was a disciplinarian. So now it went from a lot of energy in the house to where it felt like a cold garage. Mm.
JoJo Simmons
And that was one of the moments where you had to live out that comeback, you know, message.
Tim Storey
No doubt about it. Because I. I felt the sting. See, I always think that the. A comeback feels like a sting. A relationship doesn't work a sting. Or somebody with a bad diagnosis of illness is. Is like a sting. So I felt that sting of a setback. Man, I never felt anything like that because my whole thing was, you know, death. Because that was my first death. Like, that was like I still thought he was coming back. So when he never walked through that door after a month, two months, three months, that was really a hard place to be at such a young age.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah, I can. I can see how that can affect you now. You had to really find a comeback out of that setback, you know?
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
So you work with elite athletes and entertainers, as you know and I know and I know, you know, Pops and Unc and stuff like that. What's something people would be surprised to know that they struggle with these big names? You know, a lot of people, like we spoke about on your podcast, you asked me, what does fame mean? And I'm like, a lot of people think that we're famous, that we have it all together.
Tim Storey
Yeah.
JoJo Simmons
But what's something that people. Those us people, celebrities, entertainers, athletes. What's something that we struggle with that, you know, people don't know about?
Tim Storey
Yeah. So I'll call it Conversations with People, because I think that people say, like, who do you work with? It's more like, who have I not worked with? Because it's like a high school.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
And once you meet a few, you start meeting more, as you know. Right. So let's say I first met Kanye west in 2006, and he's been like my little brother since then. So I remember him talking about other artists a lot when I first met him in 2006, about what this artist was doing or that artist was doing. I don't think that people would expect that out of Kanye West. They would think that because he's so brilliant in music that he would just be in his lane and not pay attention to other people. But he's human like anybody else. He was looking over the fence to see what other people were doing. Not necessarily saying that he was going to try to do something similar, but he did want to see what they were doing. So I think any brilliant person, whether they are a rapper or even top actors that I work with, they are paying attention to what other people are doing.
JoJo Simmons
Wow. And you wouldn't think that, Right. You think that these guys are so much on a high horse or high and mighty that they're not looking at
Tim Storey
whatever they're paying attention. And that's why a lot of times during the Oscars, even if a Denzel was shot out a movie, and I think it's Denzel loves film, but he's also seeing what other people are doing, like, who's coming up, how are they acting? How's their style? And we do know that about athletes, the NBA guys are definitely doing that. I remember LeBron was talking about Wemby even when Wemby was young and tall.
JoJo Simmons
Yes.
Tim Storey
Yeah.
JoJo Simmons
I want to talk about the word ego. You know, it's a big word. It can either hinder us yes. Or it can. It can make us realize something. How do you coach someone through letting go of ego when their identity has been tied to success?
Tim Storey
Yes. Number one, great question.
JoJo Simmons
Thank you.
Tim Storey
Phenomenal question. Because it's. It's an ego that is untrained that creates a train wreck. And so many people that come to me. Here's what one of my friends said last week. If they're on tmz, they're probably talking to Tim's story. Makes sense.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
Okay. So many times. It's. It's the untrained ego, because ego is needed. And watch what I do with this. You need an ego to say, no, man, I'm. I'm rising up, or I'm going to keep the standard of my family, or, no, my. My kids are going to dress right. Part of that is ego. So what I say, God never kills ego. He purifies it. So when you could purify the ego, you will not be stopped. That was deep.
JoJo Simmons
And it reminds me of a conversation I had the other day with a guy, Rashad McCants. He was on. He was on the podcast, and he was talking about ego as well. And he was like, you know, ego doesn't always have to be bad. You know what I mean? It's a confidence thing, but it's how you use the ego. Right? And I love how you said. How you kind of just explained how ego.
Tim Storey
He purifies it. God will purify it. Because you need ego to say to yourself, man, you're. You. You're walking below your standard.
JoJo Simmons
Yes.
Tim Storey
And I do that to myself, too. Like, sometimes I'll be at a big event, and there's, like, you know, 5,000 people there, and, you know, some guys up there being mediocre and just cussing too much and acting stupid. And I think to myself, I'm about to just kick his butt. But it's not coming from a bad place. It's coming from a place of, I'm gonna kick the standard up.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah. You know, I love that part, just talking about ego. You know what I mean? Because it's important. You know, it's about how you use the ego.
Tim Storey
Right?
JoJo Simmons
And you need that ego in some sense, like you said, because how are you gonna be able to get yourself off your ass some days if you don't have the ego to say, I'm him 100%, I need to get. I am strong enough. I am him. I am. You know, they always tell people, look in the mirror, and they say affirmations and make sure you Build yourself up. That has ego to do with it. That has a little bit of your ego to say you are, you are powerful, you are confident, you are the coolest in your job. You are. It takes ego, but it takes, it takes clean ego. Right? It takes the ego you're talking about.
Tim Storey
Let's stay with this for just a moment because I think ego can be one of the greatest motivators.
JoJo Simmons
Yes.
Tim Storey
So let's say if a lady is getting ready for the 10 year anniversary of, you know, from, from high school graduation, it's, they're gonna, they're gonna have the reunion. Okay. She doesn't want to show up a lot bigger than she was.
JoJo Simmons
She definitely doesn't.
Tim Storey
Okay. So that's, that's, that's the ego. But that doesn't mean it's a negative thing. It's just, no, I gotta step up my standard.
JoJo Simmons
I want to be better for myself. You know, it ain't just about the outside looking in. It's how you feel about yourself. And that's, that's where ego plays in. So I love how you explain ego. So what happens psychologically when the spotlight shifts or the applause stops?
Tim Storey
It's usually not good for people from experience.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
Yeah. So I think that's one of the biggest challenges. I've been around Smokey Robinson as a real friend, Stevie Wonder as a real friend for over 30 years. They've been fortunate enough to see that the spotlight stayed on them. Okay. But I work with other Motown people that you just have not heard of for 20, 30 years. Or you see people that, you know, you've been around since you were a kid, they were doing well, and then the lights are not there. Yeah, it's, it's, it's, it's not good for most people. So now what they need to do is they need to pivot.
JoJo Simmons
Right?
Tim Storey
Okay. The word pivot sometimes is misused and overused. But let me use it correctly here. Pivot is just a shift. It was just, it's just a shift. And I think life is about assignments. Okay? So let, let's say if somebody was a big R and B star in the 90s, maybe that was it. He was supposed to be a big R and B star in the 90s. So stop looking for that same spotlight. Right. Let's shift.
JoJo Simmons
I love that.
Tim Storey
Let's, let's, let, let's shift. Maybe now God's going to give you a new idea. He's going to give you an idea for a company. You're going to create something you're going to do something you never thought you could do before, but it took that closed door to open up the real door.
JoJo Simmons
And I. Man, you. You're speaking to me because I feel like I'm in my pivot moment. I'm in my pivot era, I'll call it, because, yeah, for a long time, you think you need to continue to be the person that made you popular or likable at the time that you were, but it was your purpose in that moment to do that. If you keep holding onto it, you may be closing off your future purpose, your future goals, your future things that you need to be doing. So I love that you said that, because for a long time, I thought, I'm only JoJo Simmons. They only gonna know me for that. How do I, you know, how do I leverage just being JoJo from Run's house and growing up? But then I realized, like, you can pivot.
Tim Storey
I like how you're saying this, because even in watching Run's House, which I think I probably watch every episode, the thing that I loved about you is that you were uniquely yourself.
JoJo Simmons
Thank you.
Tim Storey
You weren't anybody else in your family. Right. And then now, seeing what you're doing today, you are uniquely yourself. You're not doing what anybody else is doing in the family the same way.
JoJo Simmons
Okay.
Tim Storey
So you are right on track with that. And this. This thing about. I. I believe that God speaks over everybody, and I. All I have to do is get in alignment to my assignment. We're not chasing anything. We're just getting in alignment to JoJo's assignment. At this time of your life?
JoJo Simmons
Yeah, I love that. I like alignment to my assignment. Make sure y'.
Tim Storey
All.
JoJo Simmons
Y' all write that one down as y' all subscribe to the podcast, you know, make sure. Can you write in the comments your alignment, your assignment? Make sure y' all drop that in the comments because that. That was a. That was a powerful gem. Now, I know you're heavy into God. You know, you're fa. You're a very faithful man. I want to know, how important has faith been in your own journey? And how do you explain faith to someone who's skeptical about faith?
Tim Storey
So, first of all, if you're skeptical, I don't blame the people. Because there's some bad representatives.
JoJo Simmons
Yes, yes, yes, yes. Especially now. Yeah, A lot of bad represent representation.
Tim Storey
Yeah. So I think. I think my connection to God, to relationship with Jesus Christ came early in life. So we were brought to church, but I really felt touched by God, like, for real and there's a, a statement that says, once you touch the fire, you don't want to live in the smoke. So I'm telling you the truth because I've, I've had the opportunity to, to be stupid, to stay stupid. Right, to get even stupider. But I so touched God when I was a kid. I can't get out of this. This is, this is me. I'm, I'm a God made man. I was up at Lee Iaco's house. He would be like the Richard Branson of his day. You know, he was, he was the man, Caucasian guy. And his, his house at that time was like $40 million. And he said, I ask every great man, what's the secret of your success? At the time I was like 26 and I said, I'm a God made man. And that's the truth. Now have I become wise? Do I read a lot? Do I study a lot? Do I observe a lot? Do I work hard? Yes. But man, I got God flowing through my veins and that's who brought me here. That's who I'm gonna ride with all the way through.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah. That reminds me of a saying I said when I was on an episode with Dr. Cheyenne and Brian about God. And yes, yes, you're a faithful man and that plays the majority of the part of who you are. But did you put in the work? Did you meet him halfway? Yeah. You did what you needed to do to follow your assignment or your alignment for your assignment?
Tim Storey
Yeah, but I also see, I also see the Jesus thing just real quickly in a different way than most. I think that, I think that Jesus is more understanding than most people give him credit for. When you look at the disciples that he chose, they were all undone people.
JoJo Simmons
Yes.
Tim Storey
I think we all go through recovery and discovery at the same time. So I think one of the strengths of me being a comeback coach to so many entertainers and powerful people from all walks of life that some have no faith at all. And they call for Tim's story. Because I care about human beings. I understand brokenness. And so I'm never like trying to sit somebody in their setback. Yeah, I'm always looking for the doggone comeback. I love always.
JoJo Simmons
Never want to sit somebody in their setback. And you just like me, man. I care about people. And I, and I, I see brokenness and I want to help mend that brokenness in people because I've been broken and I've been broke down and I've built back up multiple times, you know, and, and and, and that's why I, I, I like speaking to people. I'm a people's person. Because however I can help you, whether it's through my words or my actions, I'm going to do it. You know, that's kind of how I've
Tim Storey
always looked at, like, I like this,
JoJo Simmons
I like that you said that. I want to know, like, you know, the discipline over motivation thing, A lot of people talk about it, but when the motivation fades, what's Daily habits actually build a comeback long term.
Tim Storey
Yeah, it is about the habits. And I remember your dad used to post things. I know he did it in the show, but words of wisdom. The words of wisdom. Right. So there's a Bible verse, Proverbs 12:11, says, Whoever works their land shall have abundance. Abundance means overflowing.
JoJo Simmons
Yes, it is.
Tim Storey
So one reason you're doing well right now is you're working your land. You say, tim, what's your land? Your land is what's in front of you. If you're in the seventh grade, work your seventh grade land. Okay.
JoJo Simmons
Right.
Tim Storey
If you, if you work at Taco Bell, make me a gordita and take care of the Chihuahua. Okay. Work, Work your land.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
So to work your land. Watch how cool it says you got to plow the ground. So even doing these podcasts, running through LA like you are right now, man, you're plowing, you're working your land, then you got to plant the right seed. That's where people mess up. You got to plant the right seed. See, every day you have, like a bag of negative seed on the left, positive on the right. You could have woke up this morning, oh, man, I got to drive here, then I got to drive here, then I got to drive here, then I got to leave here, then I got to do this. No, you plow, then you plant the right seed, then you water the seed, which is repetition. That's that daily repetition that us old school brothers have. Okay, so you plow, you plant, you water, and then payday's on its way.
JoJo Simmons
I love how you just explained that, because a lot of people don't know how to get to the end goal, and they don't. They understand it's a process, but they don't understand the process. And I think you just explained the process perfectly.
Tim Storey
Thank you.
JoJo Simmons
All of those things in real life, take. Take time to look at your land, plow your land, clean your land up.
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
Water your plants on that land and continue to water it. That is literally the process of getting to be successful in my Opinion is focusing on your land and making sure you have the prettiest land.
Tim Storey
Like this.
JoJo Simmons
The grass is greener where I water it, right?
Tim Storey
Ooh, I like that. But you're so correct. So on a daily basis, I do this. I wake up and I plow again.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
I plan again.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
I water again, knowing payday is on its way. I'm. I promise you, I'm not the guy checking every day, like, did the harvest show up? Because I know it's coming.
JoJo Simmons
You. You preaching. I could tell you're. You're a faithful man, because, you know, you. You. You. You reap the benefits of what you sow. You know what I mean? And I love that. You. You. You. You brought us that. You took us to church, Tim.
Tim Storey
I. I went there.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah. Now, how much you.
Tim Storey
You.
JoJo Simmons
You asked me this in your. Your pod, and I asked you this. How much does your circle impact, whether you rise or stay stuck to people that are listening right now?
Tim Storey
I think one of the most difficult things of being me is I came up so quick. So I came right out of seminary and started doing chapels for the NFL players. And this is before cell phones, and. And I. I'd be, like, at the Dallas Cowboys, and the stars would be in line, and the coaches would say, they never do this. And they'd say, like, yo, can I get your digits? And it was about. They wanted to speak with me. It was like life coaching before life coaching even started.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
So I think that I came up, like, so fast in my early 20s, mid-20s, late 20s. And that created some beauty, but also some challenges because I was so kind and I believe what people said, and I let some fools in my life. And there's a Bible verse that says, when you walk with the wise, you'll stack up more wisdom, a companion of fools. Your life will start to unravel. So even in my late 20s, early 30s, I was doing predominantly well. But because of letting some fools in my life, male and female, I could see at times where my life was unraveling, at times by letting in the wrong people.
JoJo Simmons
Yo, it's you. You hit it on the target right there.
Tim Storey
Yeah.
JoJo Simmons
Every time I saw my life was unraveling, was around the wrong people, was around people that had nothing going on, is around people that were content with me being with them doing nothing.
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
And. And that was literally every time I thought back to when my life wasn't good or if my life felt like I was lost, I was running around with a bunch of lost people that had no direction in the dark. And that was truly a big change for me. I remember a while back, a couple years ago, an old friend tried to spin the block and tell Joe, he's taught me everything I know and I just wanna. And I said all respect to him, brother. I told my friend that had the contact officer to him, but my life has been way better since he has not been in my life. And I don't wanna blame only him, but it's just I know the people I'm supposed to be around. So he was only a chapter, but he wasn't part of my real book.
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
I mean, and that's how I always kind of look. Yeah.
Tim Storey
And that's. And that's the difficult thing, but so real that truly people are called to you for a reason. A season or a lifetime. And there's very few lifetime partners. You finding this already in your 30s, but you gotta. You gotta find people watch what we do with this. With similar motives and similar mindset, and the motives will come out fast.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
People say, man, I wish I could read people's minds. I don't need to.
JoJo Simmons
I don't need to.
Tim Storey
I just need to stay quiet because they're going to speak. They will say what their motives are. Right?
JoJo Simmons
Yeah. I told somebody the other day, I said, you know, most of the time I give people the chance to tell me who they are before I have to ask. You know what I mean? Why do I have to ask? Go, tell me who they are. So. And then you make a decision on what you want to do with that. A lot of people find out who a person is and still lets them stick around. That's. That's on you. You know what I mean? You gotta know when to make this decision to cut off the bad people.
Tim Storey
You know what I mean?
JoJo Simmons
So if someone fails publicly on social media, in business or in their career, what's one step or what's step one in rebuilding? Let's go with step one instead of one step. What's the first step in rebuilding if somebody fails publicly? Like I told you, your pod, I spoke to this lady named Loomis that failed pretty publicly. What would be, you know, the first step you would tell her to take?
Tim Storey
Okay, so there are steps to a comeback. Step number one just will be a couple I'll give you is number one, you have to become awake.
JoJo Simmons
Yes.
Tim Storey
So it's okay for her to become awake and say, man, it's even on tick tock that I failed. Yeah. Or people are texting me that I fail. So it's okay. To become awake to the fact that people know about your failure.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
But the second thing you need to do is take inventory. Watch how powerful this is. The inventory of how that failure is going to cost you. Okay. But also the inventory is of what do I have left? So a lot of people will say, oh, man, I did this. My life is ruined. Usually not. Usually part of what has happened in your life is damaged by. But that doesn't mean the whole thing is ruined. You like that? Yeah, I love that. So you become awake, then you got to take inventory. And then what you now need to do, number three, is partner with the right people. So I need to get around some people. They can see. Yeah. Because now in my setback, I might be in a cloud. I don't see clearly. I might be in deception. So I need somebody with good eyes. So that's a power partnership. So three steps. Watch, Become awake, take inventory, partner with the right people.
JoJo Simmons
I heard those three. Write those down. I hope y' all watching. I hope y' all listening. Take those three down. So. But how does a person know when it's time to leave comfort and step into the unknown?
Tim Storey
Okay. I think that what happens, it's almost like there's an expiration date on milk. It's even on eggs. Some people don't know that. A lot of food products, there is an expiration date. I think that there's an expiration date on many things that God calls us to do. Again, you go from the Bible from beginning to the end. People were given assignments. And I think some people, they start to fall in love with that assignment because it felt so good. But maybe that assignment, the grace starts to lift. It's deep, right? So, like, at this stage of my life, in my 60s, I don't feel like I'm supposed to be the man. Like, ladies and gentlemen, the man's about to come up. That's how it was in my 30s and my 40s, and even in my 50s now I'm not even feeling that. Like, I could still get up on that stage and rock that stage as a speaker. But I don't feel like I'm, like, supposed to be the man. I like to be the man behind the man. I like looking at you and being a player, coach and going like, yo, Jojo, let's slide here. Let's work here. Let's go into the rim this way. If we were using basketball terms, or let's shoot more from the outside. So I think that you have to realize when the grace is Lifted. Yeah. The grace will lift, but you can feel it.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah. It's about awareness. Right. It's aware to wear. Saying that it's all about being aware, you know, once you're aware, you make better decisions, you know, So I agree. And I love how you just, you, you kind of put that out there for us. So I want to talk about, you know, a lot of young men want fast success. We know that.
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
Not just young men. Everybody really wants fast success. What do they need to understand about patience and character?
Tim Storey
Yeah. If I was to speak to my younger self, I would say, slow down, it's going to be okay.
JoJo Simmons
I agree.
Tim Storey
And so this is what I say to younger guys, people, young people, male and female, man, you got to do the work. You got to do the work. You got to, you got to show up to practice. You got to take care of the details. Watch this again. Do you see a person skilled at their work? Okay. This is Bible. They will be ushered into the presence of the great. Now, one reason your father got ushered into the presence of the great and we all knew him as a household name and know him as a household name is that he became so stuck on skilled at his work. Yes. That's behind the scenes. So he was working in the dark before the light came on that we saw him.
JoJo Simmons
He was.
Tim Storey
And that's what you've been doing?
JoJo Simmons
Yes, what I'm doing still.
Tim Storey
Yeah. But I mean, I remember you doing your crazy little mixtapes and everything on the show, right?
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
So watch this. So you got to work your spot, and then God will put the spotlight on your spot. I'm never looking for the spotlight. I'm working my spot.
JoJo Simmons
And it'll come.
Tim Storey
And then God will put the spotlight on my spot.
JoJo Simmons
Oh, I love it. I love it.
Tim Storey
Oh, yeah.
JoJo Simmons
It reminds me of a saying my dad. Don't go to the party. Make your own. Start your own party. You always gotta say, you know, and I was a kid, I used to be so mad at, this guy has a hit record. And this guy has a hit record. He's like, stop chasing it. And like you basically said, create your own area.
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
You know, bring your people. Bring the people that support you.
Tim Storey
But so it's a powerful thing if you understand that it's not just about desire and wanting patience. The word you brought up is such a beautiful thing, man. When you can learn to be patient, you could be at a long line at Disneyland and still be patient.
JoJo Simmons
When you can live in patience is when you can live stress free in my Opinion one. So I'm always like, it has to happen now. That has to happen now.
Tim Storey
Yeah.
JoJo Simmons
When I've learned to just be like, control the controllables, be happy no matter how long it takes, you start realizing that time goes faster.
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
Things come quicker to you when you stop thinking about when it's going to happen and you start thinking about how you're going to do it.
Tim Storey
Okay, I like that.
JoJo Simmons
You know what I mean? I always felt like, even with this podcast thing, like, I just stopped thinking about how it's going to happen and how it's going to go. And we just started doing it.
Tim Storey
Oh, yeah.
JoJo Simmons
And, you know, look at us now, talking to Tim Story, the comeback coach. You know what I mean? So what's the difference between being mentally tough and just suppressing your emotions?
Tim Storey
Yes. Another great question that I do have an answer for.
JoJo Simmons
You have an answer to everything, brother Tim.
Tim Storey
But I work hard at it, though.
JoJo Simmons
I love it.
Tim Storey
You know, I study two hours a day, seven days a week, and people would say, what do you study? I study what I don't know. And what I do know, I want to step up higher on it. Suppression of the emotion is the most common thing that people do. So let's say a mother is overwhelmed with five kids and she's got a husband that's really not there for her emotionally. Most times she's suppressing the emotion to take care of the kids, to do the laundry, to cook, to clean, to try to be there for a husband who's not there for them. Okay, that's going to get you over, over a period of time, because you have done what people are calling today. You are stuffing your problems. That's where you see people just exploding, man. They're exploding on the streets. Road rage. You see fights on airplanes. You see fights in restaurants. So you can't. You can't stuff it. You can't suppress it. You have to bring it to the light, even if it hurts to see it clearly. Yeah, that's deep, huh?
JoJo Simmons
Yes. Yes.
Tim Storey
So whether somebody left you, whether there's an illness you're dealing with, a dumb decision you made, put that damn thing on the table and let's look at in the light and say, how do. How are we going to deal with it? Because somehow, some way. Watch this word I'm going to use. We're going to find a solution.
JoJo Simmons
Solution's a big word.
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
Less problems, more solutions.
Tim Storey
I'm about the solution. I'm, I. I will find that doggone solution with somebody.
JoJo Simmons
I'm the same way. I'm very solution based. Don't come to me without a problem. Don't come to me with a problem. If you don't want me to give you the solution. I'm a fine. Yes, you know. Now have you ever like seen people achieve everything and still feel empty? Like, what's missing in those situations, in your opinion?
Tim Storey
Very common. So I have a lot of people. So I've now been to 83 countries of the world working with people. And like last year I was one of the few Americans to speak at the World Government Summit. We had, you know, 40 presidents, leaders, princes from all these different countries. And I spoke on the miracle mentality in Dubai. So you see all this royalty, all these powerful people. I get to be around a lot of folks that play high in other countries. It's so common. You see the emptiness. Because I think what happened is they had something in their mind what it was going to be like and feel like. And it wasn't that, it wasn't that. So it was really like a false expectation. And then you get there and say, man, this is, this is not what
JoJo Simmons
a crack what I thought it was
Tim Storey
at all, at all. The question is now what? Now what? What do you do?
JoJo Simmons
Now I've seen that with a lot of people that are highly successful but may not have a family, may not have a wife and kids, may not have other purpose but making money. And they do ask themselves now what? Like I've accomplished what most people are trying to accomplish, which is get money.
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
But now what? So it's amazing that like you say that, that it's, it's very common, you know.
Tim Storey
But I do have an answer.
JoJo Simmons
What's the answer?
Tim Storey
What's the solution? So the, so the answer is because you being raised in the business. So I was around Quincy Jones a lot, A lot, a lot, a lot for probably 35 years. So Quincy and I would talk about this kind of thing about fame and this one reason he was so into humanitarian efforts is because it helped him to be around the people to see that, man, I have it so good even when I have it bad compared to what these folks are going through. And so I think that what I do with a lot of people that do well, that think their life sucks, I'll say, come into the prisons with me.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
Come into the inner cities with me. Come into the third world nations with me. Let, let, let's, let's get around some people that you really feel the struggle, smell the struggle, touch the struggle. And I'm telling you, it's really a smart thing for someone to do because then they can start saying, okay, okay, maybe I did not get the feeling I thought I'd have by having it all, but look how much I do have. And that's that power of gratitude.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah. You know, that goes back to saying I said the other day is like, I think I said it today to somebody, and I was like, you know, my big saying for me, when I even get into a stress mode is, I try not to stress because there's people out there doing more with less or going through more with less. I try not to stress because there's people out there going through more with less. And that always puts me back at a grounded state of. Yes. I'm not gonna ignore the fact that I'm upset about something, I'm sad about something, but ultimately, I'm here.
Tim Storey
I like this. I like this.
JoJo Simmons
You know, so, you know, that's. That's big that you said that, because I definitely feel that way now. For a subscriber, a watch or a listener that's watching, listening, if they feel stuck right now.
Tim Storey
Yeah.
JoJo Simmons
Financially, emotionally, spiritually, what's one action they can take today to start shifting that momentum?
Tim Storey
The key, when you are feeling stuck, which is most people, because you have many areas of your life, your spirit, your mindset, you have your physical body, you have your job, you have your finances, your relationship, whether you're single or married. So there's many areas of your life. So if there's eight areas of your life, you're going to be stuck in at least one. So the key is to realize, and I really want people to get this, we are all going through recovery and discovery at the same time. So right now, you're going through recovery of something, whether that's a past or present. Okay. You're going through recovery and discovery. So in the midst of being stuck, I have to realize everybody's stuck in some form or fashion. We're all going to recovery. But if I stay in the recovery zone and get so caught up in my stuck, I'm going to miss my discovery zone. That was. That was powerful right there. See?
JoJo Simmons
Because if I stay in my recovery. Please repeat that.
Tim Storey
If I stay in my recovery zone, I'm going to miss my discovery zone. So watch this. So let's say if you just rolled into this podcast today and you said, okay, all right, I'm getting. I'm getting Tim Store. That's cool. Life coach to the stars. That's cool. But you may have missed the magic that me and you are going to create amazing things together and do things worldwide. You may have missed it if you were just caught up in the fact that, man, there was some traffic and. And then this happened, and then that happened and that happened. Let's do this 40 minute podcast and get over with. You're in your recovery zone. You just miss your discovery zone.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah. I mean, we were in the car on the way here, and I was actually really excited to come sit down with you, Tim. So trust me, I don't never want to just get in and get out. Yes, there are moments where I'm tired. Yes, there are moments where I'm like, I got to do this.
Tim Storey
Yeah.
JoJo Simmons
But God told me to show up. I say this all the time. And who am I to question God?
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
You know, he. He told me to do all this. Why am I. Who am I to say, I'm not going to do that today or I don't personally feel good? That ain't up to me. Yes, of course you need to create boundaries for your mental health to make sure that you're good with you. But if my Lord and savior is telling me, this is your purp, this is the path you need to walk in, who am I to make a left when he's telling me to go straight o? You know what I mean?
Tim Storey
So now you're starting to preach right there.
JoJo Simmons
I'm g. Tell your dad. I mean, it gets from my home. It comes from them, right? It comes from them, yes. So at this stage in your life, I know you said, you know, you're in your 50s. You no longer want to be the man. Right. You're not going to be the man. But what's the good that keeps you inspired and pushing forward at this stage in your life?
Tim Storey
Okay. Number one is my connection to God and him giving me assignments. So I'm gonna. I gotta do this again. I gotta give you another. Another Bible verse. It says, for God knows the end from the beginning, and he knows what is yet to unfold. So I think, like, there's a. There's a side of me unfolding that's tripping me out. So. I am part owner of two AI companies. I'm part of a. Owner of a tech company. I'm launching my own mattress called the Miracle Mattress.
JoJo Simmons
I love it.
Tim Storey
With the best mattress company in the world.
JoJo Simmons
Okay.
Tim Storey
Okay. I got my own shoe line coming out with the people who created Reebok. I didn't see that coming. I didn't see that coming. So I'm just minding my own little business here, helping people, changing people. But so God knows the end from the beginning, and he knows what is yet to come, yet to unfold. So what I'm excited about at this stage of my life is just unfolding. It's just. I'm just over here unfolding and just enjoying the fact that I get to continue to do new things.
JoJo Simmons
I love that you say you're unfolding, especially at this stage in your life, at this age in your life. For anybody that's watching, that's in our community that is a little older and feels like they're done unfolding or it's just you're never done unfolding, right? You're always figuring out things. You're always being better. You're always shedding the old you to become the new you. You know what I mean? So I love that you can come on here and say you're. You're just unfolding.
Tim Storey
But you know what? I needed to see it, though, when. When. When I see a Barry Gordy rocking still in his 90s, and when I saw Quincy, who's now in heaven, still rocking in his 90s, that did a lot for me because I thought, like, look at those brothers. Still got that swag. Okay. When they were 80 and 90 years of age. It did something for me when I see Denzel Washington, who's, you know, in his late 60s, or maybe he just turned 70. Recently, they showed footage of him. He was at the Laker game in the front row. He walked all the way across the court during a break.
JoJo Simmons
To see LeBron.
Tim Storey
To see LeBron.
JoJo Simmons
Yeah.
Tim Storey
And I just thought, man, that's that. That damsel walk. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He still got that walk.
JoJo Simmons
He definitely does.
Tim Storey
And so it's nice to see, like, gentlemen stay gentlemen and keep on rocking, no matter what stage of life they're in.
JoJo Simmons
I love that. And I also love that, like, that's a lot of your generation is.
Tim Storey
Yes, one general.
JoJo Simmons
The generation of gentlemen and my generation, we caught a lot of that. But I think it's this new generation that needs to be reminded about being a gentleman. We need to be reminded about chivalry, needs to be reminded about.
Tim Storey
Thank you for that.
JoJo Simmons
Doing the right things. Because your generation really did set the tone for my generation.
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
I think not. I think. I know my generation took heed to it. I know my generation took the advice, but I think where the wires got crossed is my generation forgot to teach the generation.
Tim Storey
No, but I like what you're saying, because, you know I like the. The energy of the younger generation, and I'm all about them. I'm helping so many of them.
JoJo Simmons
Likewise.
Tim Storey
But I think that the honor. Sometimes the honor is missing.
JoJo Simmons
Missing? Yeah.
Tim Storey
The honor is missing.
JoJo Simmons
Honor and morals are missing.
Tim Storey
Yeah. So even if I. If I run into somebody that, let's say in the 80s, they were. They were like a R B star, man, that honor, I still am there. Like, I'll say to her, like, man, come on, there's nobody like you. But I mean it, because I'm giving honor. I'm giving.
JoJo Simmons
I love that. I love that you. You give an honor no matter what year it is. You know what I mean? I love it. So as we wrap this up, I definitely want to ask you this question when it's all said and done.
Tim Storey
Yeah.
JoJo Simmons
What do you want people to say your work actually did for them?
Tim Storey
Yeah. I think that the thing that would be important to me is that I help unfold people. And there's something that I talk about called discovering the hidden you. I think most people are concealed and they're covered. And I became a pro at being a locksmith, man, I just walk around going like this.
JoJo Simmons
I love it, I love it, I
Tim Storey
love it, I love it. So I. I think that, man, opening doors, I'm just. I'm just opening doors. I'm just like, it would be cool. People just said, man, you. You had to happen with Tim Story. You had to. Yeah, man. He just got into my life and went chink, ching, ching, and just open, open the door.
JoJo Simmons
I knew that's why me and you related so much. We're like minded. I like opening doors for people too.
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
I like obviously getting in the door myself, but I like saying, hold up, let me leave the door open for you guys. Like, I'm not gonna close it. Like, come on in. I. My favorite thing was growing up and watching friends of mine be able to get opportunities with me that I don't think they'd get without me. It used to bring joy to my heart. Like, oh, you met your favorite rapper today. Yeah, I was. I wanted you to do that. Oh, you were backstage with me at this point show. Because I love seeing the look on their faces of like, oh, this is normalcy. Because my friend wants me to be here with him and he wants to create that opportunity for me. That's. Maybe it's a Libra thing. I'm a Libra. And we like to bring everybody in. We like teamwork, but, like, I like seeing other people's happiness. It makes Me happy to see other people's happiness?
Tim Storey
Yes.
JoJo Simmons
Whether it's my wife, my kids, or my friends. I just like seeing, like, oh, you're happy. I was helped. I was able to help you be happy. Yes, I'm happy now. You don't even have to. You don't have to return the favor. I don't ask for favors to be returned to me because they're not favors. They're things I want to do for people. So good a favor is something that somebody needs from you. I don't do thing when they need it. I do it when I want to. I do it because I feel like I have to. I do it because I can. You know what I mean? If I can do it, I'll do it. You know what I mean? And that's kind of how I look at that. But, Tim, man, this has been a great conversation. Before we get out of here, I gave everybody these. They usually laugh. They're four good flowers. I don't have physical flowers. They're just words of encouragement. I gotta give you four good flowers for everything you've done, for not only yourself, but the community. And really helping people find their comeback, that's really important. And not only in this day and age, but forever is people live in shame. Like you said, people are down and out. People feel like it's over when they make one mistake, two mistakes, three mistakes, but that's not it. There's always a comeback within you. You know, there's a setback, but there's a bigger comeback no matter what the setback is. And you help people understand that. So I definitely got to give you your flowers and thank you for giving that to people and also for loving me and my family. I could tell you got a lot of honor and respect for not only my dad and my uncle, but a lot of people around my family. So I really do appreciate you treating me to the standard that I'm sure you treat my father and my uncle,
Tim Storey
man, well, I'm proud of you and it's a privilege to watch you unfold.
JoJo Simmons
Thank you so much. Before we get out of here, can you please let my subscribers, my listeners, my watchers, please let them know where they can find you and anything you have coming up.
Tim Storey
Yeah, best thing is just timstory.com and then Tim Story S T O R E D Y dot com. You'll see a lot of things there.
