Mark Cross
I hurt myself today to see if I still feel? I focus the only thing, the only thing that's real? The needle tears a hole the old familiar stain Try to kill it all the way But I remember everything? What have I become? My sweetest friend? Everyone I know goes away in the end? And you could have it all my invite Dirt, I will let you down I will make you hurt? Crown of thorns upon my liar's chair? Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair? Beneath the stains of time the feelings disappear? You are someone else I still right
Sam
here
Mark Cross
what have I become? My sweetest friend, everyone I know Goes away in the end? You could have it all, my empire Dirt, I will let you down? I will make you hurt? If I could start again a million miles away? I won't keep myself? I will find a way.
Mike Whiston
You did find a way, man. You found a way right to our hearts. That was absolutely freaking incredible. And I'm just learning how to make our freaking videos show up on the screen. What is going on, Joe Rubin?
Joe Rubin
What's going on, man? I was waiting for you to work on that video, but before we switch over to your video skills. Damn, I couldn't love that anymore, dude. That guy crushed that song. It was so good, dude. That was so good. I love it.
Mike Whiston
Like, I absolutely adore and love and grew up on and still listen to Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails and, you know, when I first heard Hurt hurt, you know that it's just one of those songs that sticks with you forever. And then Johnny Cash, obviously, this legend that, you know, you again, grew up with, loved his music, just loved how authentic he was and how he really brought it. And then he covered this song from another artist you truly loved, and you're just blown away, like, wow, he did it differently and awesome. And now Mark Cross takes it to another level completely. And now I need to listen to all three all the time.
Joe Rubin
That's a lot of hurt, dude.
Mike Whiston
That's a lot of hurt. You know what? There's a lot of hurt in the world, but I'm just happy that we get to sing about it.
Joe Rubin
Yes, agreed. You know what? That was fantastic. That's really a great way to kick off this week's podcast, dude, because that was. That song was really deep. That song was really deep.
Mike Whiston
It was deep. And, you know, funny enough, this week, the theme of the week is that's deep, bro.
Joe Rubin
Oh, no kidding.
Mike Whiston
So, yeah, the whole idea of the theme. So in the Friday night karaoke group, obviously, for everyone that doesn't know, go Into Facebook, type in Friday night karaoke. We have this beautiful group with a little over 50,000 members, and they all, you know, record songs, post them up. It's negativity free. It's sad free, and it's super awesome. So go check it out. So the theme of the week was fnk Deep. Or that's deep, bro. Where you can actually post up songs that have a deeper meaning either to you personally or, you know, they were trying to convey something deeper. There's hidden meaning that you're able to uncover, and that's what it was really about. And I mean, the layers on this song are endless. You know, it's about addiction, regret, realizing success doesn't matter at the end of the day. And actually for the theme of the Mark Cross actually won first place.
Joe Rubin
He did. He did. Honestly, I'm more impressed with you and your.
Mike Whiston
Your.
Sam
Your.
Joe Rubin
Your level of depth on this song. That was. That was really. That was really deep, Mike.
Mike Whiston
I'm deep, bro. So I am Mike Whiston. I am the co founder and co host of the Friday night karaoke podcast and the Friday night karaoke Facebook group.
Joe Rubin
And I am Joe Rubin with the same exact title. And welcome to episode 77.
Mike Whiston
77.
Joe Rubin
77. Yes.
Mike Whiston
What? That's so many episodes. Yeah, I like that. It's the same number twice. It's easy to remember.
Joe Rubin
It is if.
Sam
If.
Joe Rubin
See if it was episode 67, my. My daughter back for some reason. And I don't know why, but, like,
Mike Whiston
as with like, half the freaking universe,
Joe Rubin
I really have zero idea why that, like, that's funny.
Mike Whiston
They don't know either. Okay. Nobody knows. I think that's the whole thing. Nobody knows. And we're supposed to be like,
Joe Rubin
oh, my God. Yeah, anyway. 77.
Mike Whiston
You know what? I. I like that. It was a simpler time for us back in the day. Everything was just about, like, good music. You know, there was drugs. It was like a fun time. Underage drinking. It was a great time to be alive.
Joe Rubin
Now they laugh about numbers.
Mike Whiston
Now they're like, no reason. And they don't even know why.
Joe Rubin
I know it's.
Mike Whiston
It's a little weird, but it's all good. You know what? You do your thing, we'll do our thing, and we'll sing about it together. It's all good. Exactly. That's what we're here for. So we have actually 10 artists featured today, which is more than usual. Usually seven or.
Joe Rubin
We'll try to get through all of them. We'll try to get through.
Mike Whiston
We're going to Try to get through all of them. I do have a little bit of housekeeping I need to start off with. We do have an exciting new announcement.
Joe Rubin
Make it.
Mike Whiston
We have a new sponsor.
Joe Rubin
Yes.
Mike Whiston
Yes, it is. Bourbon pursuit or Bourbon yes, it is.
Joe Rubin
It is delicious, actually. I don't even know if it's delicious. I'm about to open our first bottle right here.
Sam
This.
Joe Rubin
I was about to say, it's like, oh, this is great, but I actually have never even tried it. This is our brand new sponsor. We just brought them on board, so I'm gonna give them a try. I got my nice, clear ice ball here ready for going. But these guys are out of Louisville, Kentucky. They've got like 10 different kinds of bourbons and. And rise. And I've got the. Which one am I cracking open right now? The double oaked bourbon. So I'm gonna give this one a try. Not only double oak, do they have. I know, I know. Double oak. Not only do they have, like, all these different spirits, but these guys are also podcasters. They have a podcast called Bourbon Pursuit, oddly enough. Right. And it's the number one whiskey podcast, oddly enough. So that's. That's fantastic. Yeah, it is really cool. So we're gonna actually have them join us for an episode.
Mike Whiston
Yeah, their CEO, his name's Kenny. We're gonna have him on the actual podcast.
Joe Rubin
We got a chance to catch up with him. Really cool guy. I started by two guys, Ryan and Kenny. They're down in Kentucky, and they've just built a nice, nice business for themselves. And we're excited about having them as a sponsor. And I can't wait to give this a try and report momentarily. And I'll let you know what I think. But in the meantime, looking forward to having these guys as guests on our show.
Mike Whiston
And thank you for sponsoring and yay, sponsors. And just so you all know, we don't take money from our sponsors, at least not yet. So right now we just take bourbon.
Joe Rubin
Yeah, exactly. Nobody wants to give us money. So it's not like we don't take money. Like, people just haven't tried to give.
Mike Whiston
No, no, no. You have to position it right. You know, like. No, you know, we're too good for that. We don't need it. We don't need your money. We just need your bourbon
Joe Rubin
until.
Mike Whiston
Until the money starts rolling in. So again, just to start us off, that was Mark Cross with Hurt by Nine Inch Nails slash Johnny Cash. And just a phenomenal way to start off the podcast. Coming up next, we have a heavy Hitter from the Friday night karaoke community. We have featured this absolute rock star multiple times on the Friday night karaoke podcast, and we just can't get enough. So here she is again with four of her. Where she records four different versions or like, you know, four different tracks and kind of meshes them all together and makes a beautiful song for us all to hear. This is going to be Bonnie Rochelle with how deep is your love by the Bee Gees.
Joe Rubin
Before we play, I just want to say this is really good. Really good.
Mike Whiston
I love it. Apparently, Bourbon pursuit is really good. Yes.
Joe Rubin
I'm loving it. This is great. All right.
Mike Whiston
It'd be horrible if you're.
Joe Rubin
Yeah, imagine that.
Mike Whiston
Right on, right on.
Joe Rubin
During the live show, like, oh, my God. Right?
Mike Whiston
You and like the. The Ace Ventura.
Sam
Like,
Mike Whiston
None of that happening here. We.
Sam
That.
Joe Rubin
That would definitely make sure that we never get a dollar from any sponsor ever.
Mike Whiston
No, no. You know what? The sponsors that we were like, this is actually good. They're gonna be like, you know what? Those authentic guys actually like our stuff.
Joe Rubin
True enough.
Mike Whiston
That's what it's about. So this is gonna be Bonnie Rochelle with how deep is your love by the beaches. Give it a listen.
Bonnie Rochelle
I know your eyes in the morning sun. I feel you touch me in the pouring rain. In the moment that you wander far from me. I want to feel you in my arms again. And you come to me on a summer breeze. Keep me warm in your love. Then you softly leave. And it's me you need to shout.
Sam
How deep is your love is your love.
Bonnie Rochelle
How deep is your love? I really mean to learn. Cause we're living in a world of FS Breaking us down when they all should let us be. We belong to you and me. I believe in you you know the door to my very soul. You're the light in my deepest darkest hour. You're my savior when I fall. And you may not think I care for you. When you know deep inside that I really do. And it's me you need to shoot
Sam
show how deep is your love is your love.
Bonnie Rochelle
How deep is your love? I really need to learn Cuz we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down when they all should let us be. We belong to you and we. And you Come to me on a summer breeze. Keep warm in your love. And you softly believe. And it's me you need to shout.
Sam
How deep is your mouth, your love,
Bonnie Rochelle
how deep is your love? I really need to learn. Cuz we're living in a world of fools breaking us down when they all should Let us be. We belong to you and me.
Backing Vocalist
Na na na na na.
Bonnie Rochelle
Is your love how deep is your love? I really need to learn. Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down when they are. Let us be. We belong to you and me.
Mike Whiston
I mean, don't let us be. Just keep singing. Just keep singing. Don't let us be. Not for one second.
Sam
Wow.
Joe Rubin
That was solid. That was so, so good.
Mike Whiston
So good. Was. And, like, the harmonies just kind of came in. A lot of those harmony videos, they start off with all four people on there and, like, someone just sitting there the whole time. This one, it kind of like, it was almost like the old music videos where, like, it started with one, then the other one popped in, the other one popped in. Now all four are singing together. These two went away. These two are just singing together now. And they all. She harmonized with herself really, really, really well. And it was like, into it. In each of those videos separately, if you were paying attention, it was so great. So great.
Joe Rubin
The video cap cut. That's. It's the software that you saw there. Yeah. So, like, if they do some really cool, like, editing effects. So that's. That's why it looked so cool.
Mike Whiston
That's so cool. Yeah. It wasn't like your standard smule.
Joe Rubin
Yeah, it was. It was. It was more like the things like, you see, like, them on. You see them on Tick Tock and Instagram and stuff like that. People use those for little videos. So it makes. It gets like, really cool effects. Yeah, I know, I know. But the singing was all her. And those harmonies like you said. Dude, dude, that was off, off the hook. That was so good.
Mike Whiston
And it makes me wonder, you know, again, that was Bonnie Rochelle with How deep is your Love by the Bee Gees. And I wonder, is that really an. Actually a deep song, or did she just go with a song that has deep in the title? It's like, oh, that's the first thing
Joe Rubin
that I would have done is like,
Mike Whiston
type in the word.
Joe Rubin
Like. Yeah. I'm enjoying this week's theme of the week. What's the word? Deep. Like, type it in.
Mike Whiston
You know, I mean, I guess if you wanted to, like, think outside the box, it could be. The song asks if relationships can actually survive the Of a cynical world trying to break you down.
Joe Rubin
Maybe, Maybe. Or that was the most inside the box thinking ever. I was like, 7k deep week. How deep is your love? Perfect. Checks all the boxes.
Mike Whiston
Rolling in the deep. Yes, Deep thoughts. So coming up next, you know, we're moving right along here because we got. We got eight more people to hear for you here.
Joe Rubin
We'll do our best. Yeah.
Mike Whiston
All 44 minutes to get through them all, and we love to talk so much. Another great member of the community. We featured him again a few times on the podcast and just a great dude all around. Sing some awesome rockability. Sing some awesome. Just old school rock songs in general, classic rock, all that jazz. This dude brings it. His name's Rick Mendoza and he's going to sing toto, but not a song that, you know, I would wager, or that most of you would know exactly. Most people just know Africa, which is a phenomenal song. And, you know, I was all excited, like, you know, maybe there's deeper meaning here, but it's a song called 99, and I don't know that I had ever heard it before. He played it here.
Joe Rubin
Let's hear it.
Mike Whiston
But we're gonna go listen to it and let's see how awesome it is.
Joe Rubin
Perfect.
Mike Whiston
I highly know it's gonna be awesome,
Joe Rubin
so I'm sure it will be.
Mike Whiston
Spoiler alert. It's awesome. So it's rick Mendoza with 99 by Toto. Let' give it a listen.
Rick Mendoza
99 I've been waiting so long oh all 99 where did we go wrong? All 99 I love you 99 I keep breaking your heart all nighty night how can we be apart all night? I love you I never thought it would happen I feel quite the same I don't want to hurt you anymore I never knew it would work out no one to blame you know I love you 99? 99 you keep holding my hand all night they don't know who I am all nighty n I love you,
Sam
Sam.
Rick Mendoza
I never thought it would happen I feel quite the same I don't want to hurt you anymore I never knew
Backing Vocalist
it would work out no one to
Rick Mendoza
blame you know I love you, 99.
Backing Vocalist
99.
Rick Mendoza
I can't take it no more on 99. Oh, we watch the show. All 99 I love you,
Backing Vocalist
99.
Rick Mendoza
I love you,
Sam
Sam. Sa.
Mike Whiston
Thank you. I was just like, so many moments there. I was just waiting for the vocals to pick that back up again. I was like, it's coming. It's coming, 99. It's gonna come.
Joe Rubin
Outro is forever. That was. That was hilarious. And then, like four minutes later, he's like, thank you.
Mike Whiston
That was great. I felt like I got punked.
Joe Rubin
It was great.
Mike Whiston
So again, that was rick Mendoza with 99 by Toto. And I love Old rock songs. I'm a huge old rocke.
Joe Rubin
Yeah.
Mike Whiston
And, you know, guitar solos and, you know, drum. Drum solos and all those, like, instrumental pieces were just like a really cool part of that whole era. Right? Like, that was like one of the things that we loved. You know, get Slash getting up on top of the. The piano in November rain and just ripping out that, you know, like, it was like legendary. And you could listen to that over and over, over again and it kind of ramps you up. So the problem with karaoke with those songs is it's like 30% vocals and 70% music. So most of the time you' understanding, they're like, no, he pulled off.
Joe Rubin
He just sat there. He just. Just bobbing his head for like four straight minutes at the end of that song. It was. It was great. But before that, it was great. It was, it was. It was great. Like, honestly, if you had told me that, like, that was his song and he sang that in the 80s, I would totally believe you.
Mike Whiston
Yeah, yeah.
Joe Rubin
He's got that voice. He's got like. He's got like, like, like, if he was like, if you told me he was actually like a front man of a band in. In the 80s, I would totally believe you.
Mike Whiston
I mean, I wanna. I really want to hang with that dude and like, go get. Like we said this before. I want to go hang with Rick Mendoza here and go to karaoke and have a beer with him, man.
Joe Rubin
His recording studio looks awesome too. Like, he's got a lot right? You know, it's got some cool.
Mike Whiston
Yeah, I think he has some Les Paul's back there, if I. If I saw correctly. Maybe phones or something like that. Yeah. Oh, man. So Anyway, that song 99, I had to go look it up because, like, I don't know much. I didn't know this song, you know, and, you know, both of us were getting punked at the end there. We're just waiting for that next lyric to come. So, you know, obviously we both don't know that song very well. It was really cool though. But apparently it's based on a sci fi movie where people are just numbers and love is literally illegal. It's George Lucas's 1971 debut film, THX 1138. That's what it's based on.
Joe Rubin
What do you know?
Mike Whiston
All right, I learned something today.
Joe Rubin
So did we all.
Mike Whiston
Sometimes songs are based on movies.
Joe Rubin
All right, dude, we had a lot of songs to get through, man. A lot.
Mike Whiston
We do. Before we get to the next song, we do have one other sponsor. We're not going to spend a lot of time on them, but we do love them and we talk about them every single time that we record a podcast. And this is going to be shure microphones. Yes. We sure love you shure microphones. Thanks for being our sponsor for such a long time. The little microphones that you see right in front of us, the sound quality, hopefully it's amazing.
Joe Rubin
Sounds so good, right?
Mike Whiston
Yeah, 100% coming from our MV7s here. What we have pictured on the screen, they have a bunch of new microphones. Go check them all out. We're not putting promo codes or anything like that. Just go do it because you love it and you want to sound awesome.
Joe Rubin
That's no promo code. Please pay full price.
Mike Whiston
Or better yet, give us the money. We'll buy it for you.
Joe Rubin
Nobody's trying to give us money anyway.
Mike Whiston
Don't give us money. We don't need your money. We're good. Depends on what you got. Yeah.
Joe Rubin
Come on, man.
Mike Whiston
Right, right. I always jump to these things.
Joe Rubin
You're like, no, no.
Mike Whiston
Coming up next. So we have. We're actually featuring a lot of new people on the podcast today, but I'd love. Yeah, this is not one of them. I feel like we keep on coming back to this person. We've featured her a number of times in the last, like, 20 podcast episodes. We just keep coming back because, like, the songs are just too good. Like, you can't pass on them, you know, like, we want to feature a lot of new people. And then we hear a song. We'.
Joe Rubin
Look, if it's an amazing song, you got to put it on. You just got to do what you got to do. Right? Like, you know, that's exactly.
Mike Whiston
It's going to be Angel Lark.
Joe Rubin
All right.
Mike Whiston
She's going to be singing a song that I didn't know I've never heard of. It's called at 17 by Janice Ian. I've never heard. Have you heard of Janice Ian before?
Joe Rubin
No, but I feel like this week should have been numbers theme.
Mike Whiston
Now I can only count to four. I can only count. No.
Joe Rubin
Maybe.
Sam
No.
Mike Whiston
Okay, okay. With that angel lark at 17 Genesee in give it a listen. Okay.
Angel Lark
I learned the truth at 17 that love was made for beauty queens and high school girls with clear skin smiles who married young and then retired. The valentines I never knew A Friday night charades of hues were spent on one more beautiful at 17 I learned the truth. And those of us with ravaged faces Lacking in the social graces Desperately remained at home Inventing lovers On the phone who called to say Come dance with me and murmured vague obscenity it isn't all it seems at 17 a brown eyed girl in hand me downs whose name I never could pronounce Said pity please the ones who serve they only get what they deserve and a rich relation hometown queen mares into what she needs With a guarantee of company
Backing Vocalist
and
Angel Lark
haping for the elderly.
Backing Vocalist
Remember those who win the game Lose
Angel Lark
the love they sought to gain and temperatures of quality and to be earth's integrity the small town eyes will gape at you and all surprise when payment due exceeds accounts received at 17. To those of us who knew the pain of Valentine's that never came and those whose names were never called when choosing sides for basketball it was long ago and far away the world was younger than today and dreams were all they gave for free to ugly duckling girls like me
Backing Vocalist
we all play the game and when we dare cheat ourselves
Angel Lark
at solitaire Inventing lovers on the phone Repenting of the lives unknown they call and say come dance with me and murmur vague obscenities at ugly girls like me at 17.
Mike Whiston
But were you singing at 17? Because, like, what.
Joe Rubin
I hope so. I mean, her voice is so freaking cool. What a. I just love the sound of her voice.
Mike Whiston
There's a lot of character to it.
Joe Rubin
Oh, my.
Mike Whiston
It's very uniquely Angel Lark.
Joe Rubin
Yeah, she's got a great voice and she's a great singer and she's great, like, at the microphone, like, she knows how to sing, you know, she, like, performs well, you know what I mean? Like, she's just really good. Really good.
Mike Whiston
I was trying to help you and I was like. I couldn't say the words.
Joe Rubin
I'm trying to, like. Yeah, like, like she looks like she's a natural, like a singer, you know, performer. Yeah, exactly.
Mike Whiston
That's one more absolutely. Angel freaking lark with at 17 by Janice Ian. And you know, she actually wrote when she posted this song that this song reminds me of how I felt as an awkward, invisible, shy teenager. Late bloomer. High school was rough for me. Wow. But you know What? Perfect for FnK. No trauma is great for FnK Deep.
Joe Rubin
Yeah.
Mike Whiston
You know, do you remember 17? Do you remember when you were 17?
Joe Rubin
Yeah, I was. I was definitely, you know, not the most popular 17 year old either.
Mike Whiston
I mean, me either. But I. I like, I miss it. I was. I had fun. I used to. To skateboard all the time. You know, I used to freaking break dance and I used to have fun and used to hang out with people and like, you know, have, like, real friends and, like, do stuff with people and, you know, those are good times.
Joe Rubin
No, no. Yeah. You were definitely cooler than me at 17, I'll tell you that much. That was college. College is when I sort of came out of my shell. That's. That's when I sort of hit my stride.
Sam
Yeah.
Joe Rubin
Oh, I know. Oh, that's all right, College Joe. I know.
Mike Whiston
All right, well, we're gonna make it, like, FNK Uni. Uni, yeah. University. That's what they call it in Japan. When did you go to uni? But they say it in Japanese.
Joe Rubin
I was picturing, like, Borat in this. He's unitard. I'm like, what am I? How did I inspire you for this
Mike Whiston
interesting week also, you know?
Joe Rubin
Yes. Yes.
Mike Whiston
Wow. Oh, wow. I'm just imagining. Nope, that's over. That's done. We're not saying that. I'm not saying anything.
Joe Rubin
Let's. Let's move on.
Mike Whiston
I'm gonna go get my uni. So we're almost halfway there, so. And we're at more than halfway of the show, so here we go. Coming up next, we have a the last of the singers that we have previously featured in a podcast. And then it's all new singers from here on out for the Friday night karaoke podcast. This is another great singer from the community. She's been around for a long time. A few years at least. Posts a ton, is involved in the community, has a ton of collaborations on Smule, and just a great overall singer and a great part of the community. This is Nancy Van Eindhoven. Great song. It's Love Hurts by Nazareth and what a great song for FNK Deep. I don't even have to get into how. Why it's so deep.
Joe Rubin
No, no, we get it.
Mike Whiston
We get it. Here it is. Nancy Van Eindhoven. Love Hurts by Nazareth.
Sam
Love scars Love wounds and marks Any heart not tough all strong enough to take a lot of pain Take a lot of pain Love is like a cloud holds a lot of rain Love her
Backing Vocalist
O
Sam
love her. I'm young, I know but even
Backing Vocalist
so
Sam
I know a thing or two I love you from you I really love really love, love Love is like a flame it burns you when it's hot
Backing Vocalist
Love her,
Sam
Love her. Some fulfillment, peacefulness, togetherness song Fools fool themselves I guess Fooling me I know it isn't true I know it isn't true Love is just a lie made to too many blues Love her. Satan is just a lie made too many blue Love hurts,
Backing Vocalist
Love hurts Love
Mike Whiston
hurts But your voice, it doesn't hurt. It actually feels wonderful.
Joe Rubin
Dude, it is. It is killer voice night here on FnK. Like, damn, she's freaking awesome.
Mike Whiston
What a voice.
Joe Rubin
So good.
Mike Whiston
She has power, too. She, you know, she gets those. Like that, you know, the. There's diaphragm singing and there's head singing, you know, like, where it comes, like, from, like, your. Your stomach and like all down there and, like, kind of comes up and then you have like your head singing where it's kind of more like up here. And it's like higher, higher pitch. And you have to almost like switch and transition between them. It's really hard to do for a lot of people. And she kind of. She switches between them very, very naturally.
Joe Rubin
Yeah, she crushed those high notes, like, and just. Yeah, you hear that? And it was. It just. It was great.
Mike Whiston
Yeah. Absolutely awesome. Nancy Van Eindhoven with Love Hurts by Nazareth. And we're not even going to get into why that's a deep song because I think, you know, we were all crying on that song. We're all remembering.
Joe Rubin
No, I was like, oh, man. Like, yeah, no, it's. There's. You know what? Why don't you actually do explain it to us. I'm just joking.
Mike Whiston
We're running out of time without the fairy tale romance crap. And just admits that love actually causes a lot of real pain.
Joe Rubin
Did you. Wow, dude, that was really good. That was impressive.
Mike Whiston
Thanks.
Joe Rubin
Yeah, that was great. All right. Anyway, we're running. We're running low on time, man. We got, like, a lot of songs to cover. But so we featured her a few times, right, Nancy on this. Yeah, she's. She's freaking phenomenal.
Mike Whiston
Yeah, absolutely. And she's has a lot of collaborations up in Smule. So if you, you know, a lot of these singers actually do. So if you are on Smule specifically and you just go search for some of these singers, we put their names up. We don't put their smule IDs. So if they don't have their actual name in Smule, you won't find them. But you can just go to the Friday night karaoke committee on Facebook and ask them what their smile idea is. And we actually have a long. In the featured section of the Friday night karaoke Facebook group group. There's an entire thread that is smule idea IDs for basically everybody in the group that wants to participate in that. And there's a ton. I think that we have like 300 of them in there right now. So just go look up the person and go look at their songs and feel free to join them on either. Open collaborations.
Joe Rubin
Yeah. For those of you who have no idea what Mike's talking about, if you want to sing a duet with Nancy or one of these other singers, that's what this is. So she would sing, like, the first half of it, and then you would join in and hear the recording and then sing the second half of that, and you can kind of do this duet and then have this final album of you singing with her or singing with other people. It's. It's a really cool feature on Smooth. If you've never used it before, it is really cool. It's a lot of fun.
Mike Whiston
What Joe doesn't tell you, he makes it sound like she. You know, someone's singing one half, and then you're singing the other half, which would be so much easier. But the way the first person who's singing this actually goes through it, they're actually singing, like, every other verse. So they're, like, singing something, and then they're singing the other part in their head because they have no reference after that other than the music. Then they're picking it right back up again, and they're just singing blind. And then the person who sings second, third, whatever, they're actually at a huge advantage because they just get to pick up and sing wherever the. The first singer isn't singing. So whoever's opening those collabs, man, more. More power to you.
Joe Rubin
Thank you.
Mike Whiston
You're doing God's work.
Joe Rubin
Agreed. Yeah. Join someone else's before you start one else to see what it's like.
Mike Whiston
So yay. 100%. So coming up next, first of our newly featured singers, and again, the next five songs and next top five singers are all new to the Friday night karaoke podcast. So welcome to the Friday night karaoke podcast. If you want to be one of those, just go to the Friday night karaoke Facebook group by typing in Friday night karaoke and joining. Like we said before, and every week we have themes of the week. Just participate by putting the hashtag on your video and sing a song and post it nice and easy.
Joe Rubin
How much does it cost to join Friday night Karaoke?
Mike Whiston
Well, normally it's 99.99, but for a limited time only is. Hold on, hold on. Absolutely free. Unequivocally. Unequivocally. Unequivocally. Undeniably free.
Joe Rubin
Outstanding. And we're what, 51, 000 members at this point?
Mike Whiston
51 freaking thousand members, man. That's 51, 000. Of you crazy awesome people.
Joe Rubin
Amazing.
Mike Whiston
Hundreds of videos every single day.
Joe Rubin
Hundreds of videos a day. It's really cool.
Mike Whiston
I want to give a quick shout out to Jennifer Adams who goes through all of your posts every single week and all of your submissions to help us determine who the winner each week should be and who should be on the the podcast, etc. So, Jennifer Adams, thank you for all your hard work.
Joe Rubin
Shout out. Thank you, Jennifer, and thank you to all our mods. By the way, it takes, it takes a lot of, a lot of work for our moderators to go in there and make sure this, this thing is running nice and smooth. You know, we want to make sure that, you know, negativity free. We want to make sure people are being nice and respectful. You know, people are singing sometimes for the first time on FnK and we want people to be respectful and have a good time. This is all about the singing, the love of songs, the love music and getting out there and getting out of your shell a little bit and just singing to a whole group of complete strangers on the Internet. So it's, it could be, it could be a little awesome. Yeah, awesome. But like it could be a little nervous or sometimes people join and don't sing for a while. But we've got just a ton of people that will help you out, answer any questions, make sure the account, the. The whole group is moving smoothly and that is our fantastic group of moderators. So big shout out to them as well.
Mike Whiston
It takes the village. That's what they say.
Joe Rubin
It sure does.
Mike Whiston
And we have a mini city.
Joe Rubin
We do 50, 000 people.
Mike Whiston
Is. We have. We have. Yeah, exactly. We're going to incorporate pretty soon. Coming up next, we have, as I said, a brand new singer to the Friday night karaoke podcast. This is going to be Christy Wynn and she is singing Time after Time by Cyndi Lauper. But not just any version. Wait till you hear the way she sings it and the way she presents it.
Sam
It.
Mike Whiston
We'll talk about it afterwards. Again, Christy Wynn with Time after Time by Cyndi Lauper. Give it a listen.
Christy Wynn
Think of you caught up in circles confusion is nothing new flashbacks warm nights almost left behind suitcase of memories time after sometimes you expect of me I'm walking too far ahead you're calling to me I can't hear what you said you say go slow I fall behind the second hand of mine you're lost you can look and you will find I need time after time if you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting time after time if you're lost you can look and you will find me? Time after time? If you fall I will catch you? I will be waiting Time after time. After my picture phase and darkness has turned to gray? Watching through windows you're wondering if I'm okay? Secret stolen from deep inside the junk beats out of time? If you're lost you can look and you will find me? Time after time? If you fall I will catch you on I'll be waiting Time after time? You said go slow I fall behind the second hand of wines? If you're lost you can look and you will find me Time after time? If you fall I will catch you? I'll be waiting Time after If you're lost you can look and you will find me? Time after time? If you fall I will catch you? I will be waiting Time after time? Time after time? Time after time? Time? Time after time? Time after time? Time after time? Time after time? Time after time? Time after.
Sam
Time?
Mike Whiston
If you sing and you post and I will listen Time after time.
Joe Rubin
Dude, your. Your rendition was, was, was fantastic. But let's, let's talk about her for a second. She was a phenomenal. Holy crap, dude, she was so good. I'm so happy. She joined FnK Acoustic. Oh, so good acoustic. You know, everyone knows who listens to this that me and you have quite the soft spot in our hearts for acoustic.
Mike Whiston
You know, one of my favorite things in recent years was recently we're down in Orlando for a big podcast conference. We had a big karaoke thing. We had a whole bunch of people there. And then afterwards, Joe and our friend Chase, we all went up to Vermont to Joe's house and we were hanging out in his basement and we just had a guitar. We were drinking and just, you know, we'd pass the guitar around, just start strumming stuff and just start singing songs. And we did that for like two hours. And it was the greatest two hours ever in the history of the universe.
Joe Rubin
Dude, that was my favorite night of in years. I had such a good time, Such a good time. And we, and we always have a good time. We're partying, we're having a good. That I had such a blast. I haven't done. I. I needed a night like that that was real.
Mike Whiston
Like, it was.
Joe Rubin
It was just us boys hanging out, drinking, playing the guitar, singing like in front of the fire. Like, I needed one of those.
Mike Whiston
I haven't had one of those. So cool. Drinking bourbon, drinking freaking, you know, beer from the tap.
Joe Rubin
Yes.
Mike Whiston
Great, right? What a great, what a great time. So yeah, we do love acoustic music. That was the moral of the story. That was Christy Win with Time After Time by Cindy Lauper, the acoustic version and just absolutely amazing in every way. And I love featuring new people. I do have bad news for everyone listening. I'm a liar and I punked you all. I punked you all. We said we're gonna have 10 songs today and we are at 50 minutes and there is no fucking way through 10 songs.
Joe Rubin
Sorry. So you know what? So you know, I've come to terms with this already. We came terms like four minutes in, by the way. I knew that was going to happen.
Mike Whiston
But.
Joe Rubin
But I do want to say like if. What was this last lady's name that just sang this?
Mike Whiston
Was Christy Wi.
Joe Rubin
Christy Wii. If you told me that she was a professional singer and just does this professionally for a living like every day, I would believe you.
Mike Whiston
Well, Christy Wi just gone and won our hearts.
Joe Rubin
She did. She did so. And a New member to FnK. Welcome to FnK. Thank you for joining. We look forward to hearing more from you.
Mike Whiston
You know, I want to drink with you right now, but you know, then I would just be drinking by myself.
Joe Rubin
You know what? I, I've, we've all been there, man.
Mike Whiston
I was like listening to some comedian talk about how like, you know, day drinking is great as long as you're with a group because you're day drinking with a whole bunch of people. It gets messed up when like you leave your group and now you're just a drunk guy in the middle of the day.
Christy Wynn
Right.
Joe Rubin
It's like one o' clock in the afternoon. You're like, I'm trash by myself.
Mike Whiston
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's totally cool when you're, when other people are with you.
Joe Rubin
Yeah. I wanna, I just want to shout it again now that I've actually had. This is my second glass of this pursuit here. And it is, it is good. It's, it's fantastic. And this is the double. What is this called? The double oaked bourbon. So that's typically a little, a little extra strong, which is double line. Yeah. And it's good. It's really double oaked for his pleasure. It is.
Sam
That.
Joe Rubin
Anyway, you know what if I start a bourbon company, man, that is gonna be the slogan for your pleasure. That's gonna be the slogan.
Mike Whiston
I like it. I support this. Coming up next, another brand new member. I, I'm not sure if it's a new member to community, but definitely a new member for the podcast and the podcast feature as we mentioned. This is A song I would not have picked for a deep week. You know, it's deep bro week, fnk. Deep week here. But, you know, the more I listened to it and the more I thought about it, the more it makes sense when you, like, really just kind of listen to the lyrics. So, yeah, we've all heard this song before. Just listen to the lyrics and you'll get it, and I'll tell you my take on it afterwards. So this is gonna be Sandy Hernandez, and he's gonna be singing A Little Bit of Me, A Little Bit of you by the Monkeys. Give it a listen.
Backing Vocalist
Girl, don't you walk out, out We've got things to say Talk out Let's have it talked out and things will be okay Girl, I don't want to fight I'm a little bit wrong and you're a little bit right and I said, girl, you know that it's true
It's a little bit me and it's
a little bit you, too. Don't know just what I said wrong but girl, I apologize don't go here's where you belong to wipe the tears from your right Girl, I don't want to fight I'm a little bit wrong and you're a little bit right and
I said, girl, you know that it's
true It's a little bit me and it's a little bit you. Oh, girl, I don't want to fight I'm a little bit wrong and you a little bit right well, I said, girl, you know that it's true It's
a little bit me and it's a
little bit you, too.
Ah, it's a little bit me Ah, it's a little bit you Ah, it's a little bit me Ah, it's a little bit you Ah, it's a little bit me Ah, it's a little bit of you Ah, it's a little bit me Ah, it's a little bit of
Mike Whiston
you no, it is all you, Sandy.
Backing Vocalist
It is all you, man. You did it.
Sam
It.
Mike Whiston
You did it, you son of a gun, you did it.
Joe Rubin
It is definitely all him. That was great, by the way. I haven't heard that song in years. If that came on the radio with Sandy singing it, I would just think it's the original dude.
Mike Whiston
He's so good. First of all, he has a great voice. Great voice did not match my expectation. When I saw his face and saw him, like, in front of the microphone, the sound that came out wasn't what I expected in my head. And it's awesome. It sounds fan goddamn tastic and perfect for the song. And I. I can't wait to listen to some other songs he's posted. But this wasn't what I was expecting.
Joe Rubin
Know what I was expecting to be right? It was, but it was. Was not that. It was just perfect. It was like. It was like.
Mike Whiston
I was like,
Joe Rubin
no, no, no, here's. Here's where I'm going. Here's what. Because we see a lot of videos and like, it's like, oh, man, that's so cool.
Mike Whiston
That's cool. And then like.
Joe Rubin
But like, that thing just. That song just clicked perfectly. Like I said, if I just heard that on the radio, I'd be like, this is the original song. I would not have been able to tell the difference.
Mike Whiston
Yeah. Completely rocked it in every possible way. And it just sounded like, like, like you said, perfection. It's like he was the original. So I like when we put up a theme that has, like, you know, some type of meaning, you know, like we have, you know, fnk me we've had before where you Swing song. Something's personal to you and share the story. And this one was fnk deep. You know, why is it deep to you? Why do you think it's deep? Is it personal? Is it something about the song? What is it? And you know, that's the homework. And let me tell you, Sandy Hernandez here with A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit you by the Monkeys. Sandy understood the assignment and he went and posted his thoughts on why this song is deep. So forget what I. Why. I think the song might have some deep meaning. Sandy actually tells us. And I'm going to read. It's a little long, but I'll try to get through it. I don't know where to start with the mind blowing when it comes to this song. First, it's a funky, fun song that I first heard on Monkey's TV show as a kid. As I got older, of course, I realized there was a message on relationships. Then of course, later I found out it was written along with various other songs for the show by Neil Diamond. Mind blowing.
Joe Rubin
Very cool.
Mike Whiston
Yeah.
Joe Rubin
All right.
Mike Whiston
Yeah. Neil diamond wrote the song and I
Joe Rubin
did not know that. And you know what? I like that he gave the backstory of the song. Because you know what? Now we learned two things today.
Mike Whiston
I learned something today.
Joe Rubin
This is good. This is good. This is really good. All right. So honestly, dude, this is episode 77.
Mike Whiston
Sure have.
Joe Rubin
This is quite possibly one of my top three favorite episodes of all time.
Mike Whiston
Yeah. For the music. Yeah, it's just fantastic.
Joe Rubin
No, for everything. For everything. For the music, the banter. For you.
Mike Whiston
For the birthday.
Joe Rubin
Yes. Bourbon.
Mike Whiston
Of bourbon.
Joe Rubin
Like, there's just a lot that. That went right in the past hour, and this is just perfect.
Mike Whiston
So the bourbon.
Joe Rubin
I'm gonna say it right now. We're good. Yeah, the bourbon helps.
Mike Whiston
You know what? You're my favorite, too, Joe Rubin.
Joe Rubin
You know, I was hoping you'd say something sweet back to me.
Mike Whiston
Fishing for that one. You're like, just.
Sam
Just.
Mike Whiston
Come on. Bite, bite. Oh, I know. Joe and I, we. I mentioned this before. We go to a lot of conferences regularly, like, every other month, it feels like. And we're traveling all over the place, and we often will do karaoke when we go out. We usually host a giant party. We just did it in Orlando, like, we mentioned, and we had, like, 200 people in that room, and it was absolutely amazing. And it's not like we're not throwing a karaoke event and charging people to come to karaoke. Making a business out of it. We're literally just. We're paying for everyone to drink. Yeah. And have a good time. And we just, you know, love karaoke. So we're like. We bring 200 people, and we just, you know, have a great time. We don't sell them anything.
Joe Rubin
It's fun.
Mike Whiston
Yeah. Absolute freaking blast. And we're there for, like, six hours, and it's just an absolute amazing time every time. So we're actually going to be from Thursday through for, like, you know, five days or something. We'll be down in Austin, Texas, for South by Southwest. It's one of the largest, like, marketing events in the US I don't think
Joe Rubin
you have to explain what.
Mike Whiston
Yeah, I think most people know what south by Southwest is. Anyway, we'll be there. It's a huge, like, music and marketing and freaking brand. And he just. They shut down the freaking city for, like, a week. So we'll be there. Unfortunately, our calendars are massively booked, so we're not hosting a big karaoke party this time. But if you are in the Austin area and you want to come and get a drink with us and just hang out, we'll do some acapella singing with you on the street. I'm totally cool with that. Or, you know, maybe we could pop into, like, a little.
Joe Rubin
I will sing with you right in the middle of any bar.
Mike Whiston
Yeah, exactly. We'll go anywhere and we'll sing a song, but please hit Joe or I up on the Friday night karaoke community. We're obviously the admins. So just go into the admins and send us a message and be like, hey, I'm in Austin. Or I could be in Austin, and I would love to get a beer with you. And we got your beer. We got your. We got your song. We got your beer. We got even some nachos if you really want.
Joe Rubin
Slow down, slow down, slow down. We don't have a nachos. We have a beer budget. No nachos.
Mike Whiston
Nacho. Nachos.
Joe Rubin
Yeah.
Mike Whiston
Sorry.
Joe Rubin
Buy your own nachos. Damn it.
Mike Whiston
All right. Yeah, that's right. The beers are.
Joe Rubin
All right. We're over an hour. I. I hate to cut you off here on because. But what are we doing next week? We have a theme.
Mike Whiston
One more song. I. I have to do one more song. There's one more song. I'm sorry. We can't do seven songs. It has to be eight songs at least. So we got one more song.
Joe Rubin
Whoa. Sorry.
Mike Whiston
We're going over. We're going over.
Joe Rubin
So one more.
Mike Whiston
The last song. So this is another new member. Now, the song I will pre warn you has a large reverb on it, but it's by design. The song is going to be from Pink Floyd already. Reverb. Pink Floyd makes a lot of sense. It's. Hey, you. So there's a. You know, the song naturally has a lot of reverb, and the artist is trying to recreate it, and I think he does a damn good job at it. This is Mario Rivera singing hey, you by Pink Floyd to close out FNK Deep. What is deeper than any Pink Floyd song, really?
Joe Rubin
That's pretty much as deep as it gets.
Mike Whiston
Perfect freaking pick. Anyway, here it is. Mario Rivera with Hey you by Pink Floyd.
Joe Rubin
All right,
Sam
Sam. Life.
Mark Cross
Out there on your own Sitting naked
Rick Mendoza
by my phone Would you touch me?
Sam
No. Hey,
Rick Mendoza
I'm coming home.
Sam
Ram.
Rick Mendoza
No matter how can I break me?
Sam
It was into his prayer. Sam, help me hey, you out the
Backing Vocalist
other world Breaking bottles in the hall can you help me?
Sam
Can you. Don't tell me there's no hope anymore. Together we stand Divine we fall.
Mike Whiston
Man, that is such a hard song to do. Like, I'm a huge fan of Pink Floyd. Like, you know, and they're so, like, trippy and so, like, out there, and that is such a hard song to do. And the dude just brought it, and I. You know, in the closet is actually a really interesting place to record. If you didn't know this, that recording in the closet is actually one of the best places you can record in your house. If you don't have a studio set up because of all the clothes and everything like that, it dampens the sound. It doesn't bounce off the walls and, you know, echo. Although if you put up the reverb all the way on your recording, it will still echo.
Joe Rubin
Way to pitch the. The closet. Crank up the reverb to 10.
Mike Whiston
But yeah. So again, that was Mario Rivera with he by Pink Floyd. Perfect pick for FnK deep week. Obviously it's like desperate pride for human connection and, you know, an otherwise isolated type of world and, you know, they don't know they have. You could probably play it backwards and it recites a satanic incantation or something. Possibly, you know, don't play it alongside a movie. So that. That's it. That's what we got. That's what we got. That was. That was our podcast. That was it.
Joe Rubin
Way to wrap it up.
Mike Whiston
FNK Deep.
Sam
We.
Mike Whiston
We deep that out. It was. It was a deep. It was a deep hour of music.
Joe Rubin
It is. And this is my fourth glass.
Mike Whiston
You didn't go very deep on that.
Joe Rubin
I did a little bit of damage on this bottle here.
Mike Whiston
This is, you know. You know you went. Yeah, it's FNK shallow. You went shallow on that one.
Joe Rubin
Yeah, dude.
Mike Whiston
Actually, it's just you. It's only you there.
Joe Rubin
If that was both of us, that would be.
Mike Whiston
We did kick an entire bottle of whatever we bought. I forgot what we had had.
Joe Rubin
Yes, we did.
Mike Whiston
It was a whistle pig or something. Or something like that.
Joe Rubin
Wellers.
Mike Whiston
Wellers, yeah. We destroyed that entire box. Well, actually, you and Chase destroyed. I had a little bit. You made those really good old fashions, though. Oh, man.
Joe Rubin
The smoked with the bacon in it, man.
Mike Whiston
Oh, my God. I gotta take a quick moment. I know we're over time, but I just need everyone to hear this. So Joe, the crazy alchemist, you know, scientist that he is, you know, chemist, you know, with his freaking Bunsen burners and goggles and stuff, was there with his Weller's bourbon and he was pouring for Chase and I. He was pouring these. These, you know, old fashions. And he would put the, you know, obviously the. The. The orange peel and he would like flame it and like, you know, put it inside. And then he would like take a piece of bacon and then he would like flame that and let it drip inside and like. Oh, man, it was just. It was. It was epic. And then he would put a smoker on it and the entire thing would just smoke up and. And it was the best old fashioned you could ever Hope to drink.
Joe Rubin
It was fantastic.
Mike Whiston
It was expensive. Really good maritismo cherries or whatever they're called.
Joe Rubin
Yeah, by the way. Like, by the way. So we had just. And we had just come off like that week of traveling and we had old fashions and stuff, and that was better than any old fashioned we had at any top hotel.
Mike Whiston
The best part is you can eat the bacon afterwards.
Joe Rubin
I know.
Mike Whiston
Like, yeah, like, damn it.
Joe Rubin
Like what?
Mike Whiston
All like that. So we're at that time in the podcast where, you know, very sad. We finished all the songs and we had a great time and we all laughed and we all cried and we all felt deep emotions throughout. But, you know, now is the time to decide what the next theme of the week will be. So we've already decided on this week. You know, it happened on Friday. But we have another theme coming up on this upcoming Friday, and we need to decide what that theme will be. So normally the way this goes and the way we'll do it right now is I'll come up with a theme, you'll come up with a theme. We'll go back and forth and we'll decide. I'm gonna go with FnK spring cleaning. That's really lame. I don't want to do it. I don't know. Because spring is coming up, isn't it?
Joe Rubin
Like at the end of the fnk toilet?
Mike Whiston
Let me tell you, we got toilet ones in freaking Japan that squirt water in your ass, and they're fantastic.
Joe Rubin
So you hold on to spring cleaning. And I'm gonna go with FnK.
Mike Whiston
We literally just did an acoustic week, like literally three weeks ago.
Joe Rubin
We did.
Mike Whiston
We like literally just did it.
Joe Rubin
Oh, man.
Mike Whiston
I'm gonna go with. I'm gonna change mine. I'm just gonna do an easy cop out. It's like super easy cop out now. I'm gonna go with FN 70s.
Joe Rubin
All right.
Mike Whiston
Nice and easy Cop out. What are you gonna go with?
Joe Rubin
FNK rock.
Mike Whiston
We haven't actually done, like a straight up rock. We haven't done a regular rock. You know what? We haven't done a rock week. You know what? Straight up rock.
Joe Rubin
I want some Foo Fighters, Metallica. I want some Rolling Stones.
Mike Whiston
I want some.
Joe Rubin
I want.
Mike Whiston
You got it. You got it. You win.
Joe Rubin
I got an FNK rock.
Mike Whiston
FNKING rock.
Joe Rubin
Better than F. You sure? You sure you don't want to do FNK Toilet wand.
Mike Whiston
Toilet wands are great and I love singing about them. I love singing into them.
Joe Rubin
Let's go with mnk.
Mike Whiston
Rock Rock, baby.
Joe Rubin
Let's do this.
Mike Whiston
All right, so it's going to be hashtag FNK Rock. We're going to be singing rock songs. You'll see it posted on Friday when you go to the Friday Night Karaoke Facebook group. Again, you've heard me say it a thousand times. You're going to hear 1001. Go to Friday Night Karaoke on Facebook by typing in Friday Night Karaoke in the search bar, clicking join on the on the group. Answer three little questions. Make sure that you answer those questions so we know you're a real human being that actually wants to be there. And we will improve you and you will be able to join and you can post your songs, you can comment on other songs. You can just sit there and watch other people and, you know, talk with your friends about how awesome they are. Doesn't matter. Please join the community. We would love to see you there. And if you participate in the weekly themes, you can get featured on the podcast. We are, you know, not the biggest podcast in the world, but we're not so small either. You can find us On Apple Podcast, iHeart, Spotify, Castbox, Google Podcasts, Amazon, Audible, and anywhere that you listen to podcasts. And on average, we get anywhere between 50 and 60,000 listeners per episode now. So thank you for being one of those.
Joe Rubin
And there was that one time when we were the number one music podcast in America.
Mike Whiston
There was a time. I remember the time. But you know what? Since we're here, since we're here and we're.
Joe Rubin
Are we, are we still rated right now?
Mike Whiston
Since we're all here together, let's just go ahead and show this off. Let's do it right now. Friday Night Karaoke on Apple podcasts is number 68 in the music category and that's pretty impressive because we haven't released an episode in two months.
Joe Rubin
That's pretty good.
Mike Whiston
So that's number 68.
Joe Rubin
You know what? We've got a killer community at FnK,
Mike Whiston
so we love you all. Thank you also for listening to our episodes and all this. Please find us in the threads, send us a message. If you are going to be in Austin for South by Southwest next week, please, or this week, rather, please hit us up. We would love to get a drink with you. I'd love to sing some karaoke with you. And that's it. Catch you all later.
Joe Rubin
Peace out.
