No. How did your first song get so big? Like, how did it happen?

The minute vers version is. So I was playing sax with this guy that had a record deal. His name was Jeff Lorber. A really good piano player, keyboard player. He had a record deal with Clive Davis. So you know the name Clive Davis?

Well, I don't know him, but I got the gig with him and I played with him for like five years. And during those five years, we would go to New York and play the jazz clubs and Clive would come to watch his artist, Jeff. And while he watched his artist, he saw me. And after like five years, Clive comes up to me and says, kenny, I think there's a market for your music. Let's do. Would you like to do your own solo records? And I thought, of course I would.

[Dave]

Did you ever think someone was going to ask you, like, have that and you would never have even had the boldness?

[Kenny G]

No, I would have had it.

To make a solo.

[Kenny G]

Oh, yeah, I would have had it. But I. But I wasn't, like, chomping for it at that moment. I wasn't lobbying for it.

The fact is that the. There was a. There was a. One store in the Pike Place market in Seattle, one Starbucks store, and they just sold coffee beans. That's where it started. You could just go buy beans. Anyway, my uncle, My uncle says, hey, they were trying to raise money for Starbucks coffee. I don't know anything about coffee. He goes, yeah, well, I'm going to put some money in and why don't you meet the guy that's raising the money. His name was Howard Schultz, the guy that started it. You should meet him. He said, I bet you guys will become friends. So I met Howard, and Howard kind of gave me the whole rundown of what he was planning to do. And he's a very charismatic guy. Great guy. And we became good friends for a time period. And then I said, well, who's else is investing? And I looked at the names, I

go, oh, my gosh.

Okay. I said, whatever they're doing, I'm gonna do. And that's how it started.

[Kristen]

And so you, like, there was. So you were like one of the first investors.

I prefer this way of communication and I think that if it. When you're direct, I think so often when you have with certain people and you have to change just because you know how they're gonna like, perceive it or receive it, then it's like this extra layer of work where if you could just be direct and there was no hard feelings, we'd move through.

But the world doesn't work like that. I wish. So I've actually learned to be a lot softer about the way I do, and I like it better.

How do you know who to be softer on and who to be direct around?

Yeah. I would say that I have a chip on my shoulder in this way, but it doesn't really apply these days because in the past, you have a record deal, record company signs artists. Then I feel like, okay, you're not good enough to be signed, but you got signed. You got signed because why? I'm really proud of being an artist. Work my ass off to get my skill level. Okay. I get the record deal. You shouldn't have that record deal. So I get a little chip on my shoulder about. Too many people got signed that didn't deserve it. Yeah, that's my thing.

But it doesn't last long. The chip. It's just an observation. Or you don't really carry it with you.

See, like, I don't know how you are. I bet it's pretty similar to me. Like, I walk around kind of knowing. Not out of arrogance, just at like an analysis of the facts at hand that, like, I am great and I can do it and I'm a good person and I can do a lot of great things. And like, the loop of dialogue in my head is so, like, supportive and lifts me up to be my best version. Her inner dialogue is the opposite of that.
