Brooke
I'm Brooke. Happy Wednesday.
Danielle
Happy Wednesday. Brooke's dreams are coming true because we're doing a full on book themed episode.
Brooke
We are lock in. Get out your books, get out your Kindles. We're gonna be talking all things books today.
Danielle
Final finally get cozy. We're gonna be talking about our reading routines. It's just gonna be.
Brooke
We're gonna romanticize the day 100%. And this is all. I thought you were saying gonna say something else there.
Danielle
I was like, this is Brooke's time to shine me the floor.
Brooke
Danielle, I so appreciate it.
Danielle
The library.
Brooke
Yeah, literally. We are also so excited because we are getting a chance to interview Lucy Score who is like a major, major author. I mean she goes number one on AM like all the time.
Danielle
This is huge that we're getting to talk to her.
Brooke
Insane. So that is going to be coming up later in the episode. So first you just got a little gals individual here and then we'll get to chat with Lucy.
Danielle
Exactly. No, it's really exciting. Thanks so much to Amazon Books and Kindle. We're gonna be able to talk about all this. Honestly, like we're both Kindle fans. We're actually. It's actually kind of crazy too because you used to be not a Kindle girly and now you've been converted.
Brooke
I know. I used to be one of those. I mean, I still love my like wall of books in my. Well now it's in my. I have like specific like bookshelf. Something about a physical book is always going to do it for me every time. Like it just feels. But it's not in, in practice when you're traveling in practice when you're traveling all and you want to bring like multiple books on a vacation or if you are like not sure how many books you're going to read or at night. There's just like a lot of times when it's like for convenience. We got to go Kindle, you know?
Danielle
Got to go Kindle. No, for sure. Like it's amazing. So we're excited to kind of chat about all things reading. But how are you doing, Brooke? How are you doing?
Brooke
I'm doing swell. Yeah. No, I mean I'm doing, I'm doing. Okay. Well, I'm having one of those days where like I was like googling like I was uptown. I had some appointments. Yeah, personal appointments, whatever.
Danielle
You know me, I had my appointments today too. It was our appointments appointments day. Yes.
Brooke
And. And then I was craving something sweet. So I literally like googled like sweets near me. I was feeling so rogue and I finally went to little sweet treat. I've been wanting to go.
Danielle
Oh, is that the candy place?
Lucy Score
The out.
Brooke
They have an outpost in Rockefellers Outpost. Yes. It was like all of the office girlies, like in their corporate gear, like coming down, like getting a sweet treat. They like their badges and stuff. I was like, oh, it's like a 3pm like sweet treat.
Danielle
You know, I really like that. No, it's the best. Being I was also in like midtown area, I went to get lunch with Ryan because he was at work. I know.
Brooke
Chic of you.
Danielle
I know. He keeps asking me and I was like, I feel like he does really want me. Even if someone offers to do something and you're like, ah, you don't actually want me to. No. He's like mentioned a few times. So we went and got lunch and I met a couple gals in the go listeners on their lunch break.
Brooke
Oh, that's so fun. I love. We just need to lurk around midtown area, I'm thinking.
Danielle
So yeah, it was really nice. And see all their like outfits that they were wearing to the office.
Brooke
I love like the badge on the waist, you know, like I used to.
Danielle
Have on like the retractable thing, like, hey, yeah, clocking in.
Brooke
Clocking in.
Danielle
Yeah.
Brooke
I mean, how cool. I guess if you work in Rockefeller, there's so. There's like a food hall under there. Have you ever been?
Danielle
No.
Brooke
Really cool.
Danielle
My friend that works in that building always talks about it though. It's like a food court, right?
Brooke
Yes. There's so many options. Like the hallway kept. I literally was like, this is severance. Like I kept going and going and going like it was. There's more options, you know, like you're like, it's gotta end now. It's like, no, it's gone.
Danielle
Wait. That's kind of so fun though, to go on a random little adventure on the day.
Brooke
Yeah. No, I was like, where, Where? Where will it take me? Well, I was craving something sweet. I was like, you know, crumble right now, but I'm gonna save that for later in the week. So I was like, okay, what's something.
Danielle
You know, you need a sweet treat. I mean, I think little sweet treat is the perfect place to go.
Brooke
It was really. I. I had a few of the pieces of the candy. I mean, it's definitely like sour candy. The ones that I selected, at least you could pick.
Danielle
Selected. You have such a Good vocabulary.
Brooke
Well, it's all this reading.
Danielle
I know.
Brooke
Yeah.
Danielle
Brooke is, like, on the. She's, like, determined to finish this new Lucy Score book. I am. Well, we.
Brooke
We got, like, word that we were interviewing her, like, you know, with, like, a few days notice. And for some reason, I just was like, you know, don't have enough going on right now, and I fully do.
Danielle
But we have the busiest week, you guys, in Brooklyn. No, no. I will finish this in 48 hours. Like, that is so awesome, because obviously you've read so many of Lucy Score's.
Brooke
Books, but it's been her most recent one. Yeah. And I feel like it's, like, the start of a new, like, series of hers that she's doing. So, like, it's always exciting. The first book that the. You know.
Danielle
Yeah.
Brooke
Meet the characters.
Danielle
No. I literally walked into the hallway of our podcast to do you guys, and I looked down at Brooke, and it looks like she's looking at her. And then I was kind of annoyed because I was texting her, and I was like, this bitch isn't responding to me. No.
Brooke
My phone is charging in the other room. I was phoneless, you know, reading on my Kindle. I'm just so disconnected these days. I just don't care about.
Danielle
It was very cute walking up and you got your Kindle cover on and.
Brooke
Oh, I love it. We'll get into all of that.
Danielle
Yeah.
Brooke
What about you, though, besides lunch with Ryan? Everything's. Everything's good.
Danielle
Everything's good. Traveling every weekend of April, and it's.
Brooke
Is it catching up?
Danielle
It's catching up. I'm just getting a little. It's like. It's really not the traveling. It's like. Like, then when you're here in New York, I'm just, like, running around like a chicken with my head cut off.
Brooke
Like, trying mushing, like, three days into one.
Danielle
Correct. Yeah. And. But that's. That's just. I notoriously. April is always like that. For me, there's just, like, all these, like, things that are, like, you know, it's usually I'm going to a festival of sorts. Yes. And then there's, like, just other things. And I haven't been home. Like, I want to go home to Tampa. Like, there's just things. You're going to Florida? I mean.
Brooke
Yeah, no, it definitely is. Everybody comes out of hibernation. I feel like in April and, like, things just start happening.
Danielle
Things start happening. But no, I'm good otherwise. Like, been back. Honestly. Been back on my reading grind. Like, reading before bed, which has Been really nice. This episode came at a really nice time.
Brooke
It's a great way to wind down, I have to say. Like, if you're. And I know I, I know we're getting older because I know everybody's now, like, the topic of conversation is, like, what to do when you have sleep troubles. I swear, like, that's what my friends talk about these days. Like, I just can't fall asleep or whatever.
Danielle
Yeah.
Brooke
Like, and I'm like, I prescribe you reading. Like, truly.
Danielle
I mean, you know how I work. Like, unfortunately, I read. The reason I can't finish a book so fast, you guys, is because I read three pages and I fall asleep. But it's like, those three pages are so special to me. But actually, last night I, I got like, a chapter in, which is, like, huge for me. But then as, like, the sun comes out and, you know, we're laying by the pool. Oh, we can actually finish the book.
Brooke
I, I, that I like a vacation. Like a. I mean, what I'm lucky, like, to have, like, more like, days so that I can, like, really lock in and be like, you know, I'm reading.
Danielle
Yeah.
Brooke
Like, low agenda or even just going home and just sitting outside.
Danielle
Yes. That's when I read. Because, like, when you're reading, like, on vacation, what does Ben do?
Brooke
Usually he's on his phone or, like, maybe it depends what the, like, resort has to offer. Like, what it is. I don't know if it's playing the ocean or the pool. His friends playing in the pool.
Danielle
I asked because Ryan, like, because you need an activity. Right. It's like, then I'm sitting there reading, enjoying my life, and I'm like, oh, but he's, like, squirming, you know, like, what are they gonna do? So it's nice when we go on, like, girls trips and we're all, like.
Brooke
Pulling out our silent friendship time. Like, it's a known thing.
Danielle
Like, we're reading.
Brooke
Yeah. And it's perfect for if you're, like, traveling a lot. I mean, via train, plane, all whatever it may be like to have the Kindle on hand. Like, it's just so nice.
Danielle
It is nice.
Brooke
So we are just so excited that we are partnering with Amazon Books and Kindle. I mean, like, this is absolutely epic. It's so cool.
Danielle
We were so excited to get this email.
Brooke
A dream come true for the gals. And we are celebrating the Amazon book sale. This is, like, also a very big deal.
Danielle
Major. This is going on from April 23rd to April 28th. And you're gonna see some of the best deals on books right now on your Kindle. And we also will have some of our favorite books linked on our storefront, which will be linked in the description for you guys to check out. Like, we definitely have some favorites. We have a couple intersecting favorites.
Brooke
I feel like we have a very similar book taste. There's just like, maybe, like, I feel like a.
Danielle
There's another genre.
Brooke
Genre. Maybe, like, I feel like I dive into a little bit more than you do.
Danielle
I would say definitely. Like, I'm like, romance with thriller involved.
Brooke
Yes. Like a. Free to make that. And you, like.
Danielle
I'm. That's what I'm reading the Teacher right now.
Brooke
Oh, great.
Danielle
And I'm loving it. Yeah.
Brooke
Yeah. No, I feel like those are great. You know, they're Kindle on Kindle Unlimited, I think.
Danielle
Yep.
Brooke
Which is lovely.
Danielle
I know. I love when that happens.
Brooke
Yeah. When you slip it right in, it's like, oh, love that. And we just love having it all, you know, on hand and ready to go. So.
Danielle
Thanks so much to Amazon Books for sponsoring this and Kindle. So I think we should get into our reading routines.
Brooke
I think so, too.
Danielle
I, like, transport me to the Brooke Micio, like, the perfect atmosphere for reading.
Brooke
And I've been working on crafting this, you know, because when you move, you kind of throw, like, you know, your sanctuary. And for me, I do a lot of my reading in bed.
Danielle
Yeah.
Brooke
I would say no matter. But then I also, like, will read in my living room, so I kind of have, like, two.
Danielle
I would say, like, a reading. Oh, I know. You don't have a reading chair. What am I saying?
Brooke
No, I. Couch. But I'll just. Yeah, I'll read on the couch with, like, the blanket. Like, I did that this morning. I, like, woke up early to read.
Danielle
Oh, my God.
Brooke
And it was, like, such a treat, though. Like, I was like, oh, my gosh. I feel, you know, some people read the newspaper in the morning, like, book. Not every book, but I feel it's.
Danielle
Nice to not go on your phone and, like, just be alarmed with, like, notifications.
Brooke
Totally. Or I always just, like, hit play on a podcast or play on a song or something. So it's nice to, like, not have audio stimulation and actually just be, you know, locked into, like, a good book. But I would say my reading routine is most of the time, Kindle. Now. I would say, like, I'm really converted, especially because when I'm reading at night, I would say the lights are off or extremely dim, and I need that backlit I need that like light. I have the color soft. The colors off Kindle is great.
Danielle
It's so cool and so what's, I mean, I know but tell everyone what's so amazing about it.
Brooke
It's colors. So like, as opposed to like the Kindle paper white, which is also great. The color soft, it's fully like reads like a, a true piece of paper. Like when you're outside in the sunshine and like the light hits it, it's not like glossy and reflective, it's matte and it's beautiful and it's perfect. But this one also is color infused which is amazing. So if you're reading like a cookbook, you can see all the pictures with the full color. Perfect for like more of those style books.
Danielle
And I like it though too. Like yesterday you post on your story that you post you finished a new book and I was like, oh my God, it's color, right? It's so, so cool. Like obviously it's like only the title page, but it's so exciting especially if you have the settings where your title page is like on your home screen.
Brooke
Yeah.
Danielle
I mean it adds some color to your life. And there's some pretty colorful book covers.
Brooke
100%. Okay, we are deep in our book girl era and we have something super exciting to share with you guys.
Danielle
Yes, we are teaming up with Amazon Books and Kindle for a major shopping event and we're giving you the inside scoop. Amazon has kicked off some of their best book deals of the year. Happening now through April 28th.
Brooke
It's packed with can't miss deals on everything across trending titles, bestsellers, Amazon book editors picks and more. Basically, it's your dream bookshelf, but in sale form.
Danielle
And Amazon makes it so easy to read how you want, when you want. Whether you're a physical book girly, an audiobook lover or just prefer downloading books to read on your Kindle instantly. It's all there for you to find your next favorite read.
Brooke
Plus the new Kindle color soft. It's so good. The color display brings stories to life and browsing covers and color just brings a whole new level of fun to the experience of hunting for your next read. And don't even get us started on the Kindle scribe. Not only can you annotate directly in your books, but but the built in notebook opens up a whole new world of note taking possibilities from journaling to doodles to to do lists or my personal favorite, planning out content for an upcoming pod.
Danielle
So if you've been meaning to Refresh your reading routine or start that book everyone's talking about. This is your sign to click add to cart and live your book lover dreams.
Brooke
Don't sleep on some of the best deals happening right now. The Kindle color soft and keep an eye on the episode description to check out our Amazon book sale idea list with our recommendations. It's the perfect excus to treat yourself to your next favorite read. Yeah, you don't realize that it's like, it's fun to have that infused and I feel like this is like one of like the newest Kindles. It has a lot of storage on it too, which I really like. It just is like, it's great. Like I, I just am a big fan.
Danielle
No, it's seriously so nice. I've also just to interject, I've also been exploring the Kindle scribe, which is so cool, you guys. You can obviously like annotate. That brings me back to like the good old days of like annotating books. And you like I, for a while I was like, oh my God, can I even do this on a Kindle? No. Now there's the Kindle scribe. So you can annotate your books that you're reading and underline things that are just feeling meaningful. But also you can totally utilize this. You know me, I'm a planner, I'm a virgo. I make. You can make to do lists on there. Like you can totally do your own thing, write down your tasks, whatever it may be, and use it as a notebook, which I think is really cool. Makes it kind of multi purpose, which is nice. And there's no notifications. You know, you're not getting bothered with social media while you're trying to get work done or reading whatever it may be. And it's nice and big. It comes with the pen, which I. When something comes with the accessory, I'm like, thank you, Amazon.
Brooke
All in the box. Like right?
Danielle
Seriously? Yeah, yeah.
Brooke
Great gift idea too. All these are great gift ideas for Mother's Day coming up. Oh my gosh.
Danielle
Mother's Day.
Lucy Score
Yes.
Danielle
So the color soft and the scribe are kind of killing it right now.
Brooke
So I mean I could just tell you what I do with my family is like we all have one Amazon account. Yeah. Because like I haven't grown enough out of that phase yet. And I will like read a book on my Kindle and then like my mom literally goes through the library and sees what I've read and we'll just text me and be like, should I read this one? And then like it's there, so that's so nice. Yeah.
Danielle
So we've got the dim lights.
Brooke
Oh, yes.
Danielle
We've got our Kindle colors off.
Brooke
So I've. And I've gone back and forth on the, like, Kindle holder thing. So this is, like a. It's a full mount. That really like. It could.
Danielle
It clamps. Clamps onto your headboard.
Brooke
Yeah. Furniture. Anything that you have, like, nearby. And you can essentially use a remote and, like, sit back and just kind of click through the pages. At first, I really liked it, to be honest.
Danielle
Yeah.
Brooke
But the Kindle's just so lightweight and so, like, there. And I kind of like having it closer to my face. I think I realized, like, in theory, good idea. And you can make the font size bigger on the Kindle.
Danielle
True.
Brooke
So many settings. But, like, I just. I do like to hold something, you.
Danielle
Know, it's so nice. Do you do the, like, night mode, like, where it's, like, the black background, the white text? Me too.
Brooke
And I bring the brightness, like, really, really far down. You could, like, even warm up on the colors off. It's really good for your eyes. You know, it's nice if you're like, me and you have a boyfriend who sleeps you and doesn't, you know, that.
Danielle
Was a big change for you.
Brooke
It was hard. When I was reading my physical books and I had my book light, I didn't realize that it was. The beams were going right into his eyes and he's trying to sleep.
Danielle
No, Book lights really aren't that great. Like, even when we were at our hotel in Los Angeles the other day, remember that book light that was above our head? Like, I was thinking if that was on, we were like. It kept turning on, and we couldn't fall asleep.
Brooke
It definitely is best if you're in a room alone. I feel like.
Danielle
Yeah. And it's just so. I. I feel like so many people are so worried about, like, the glare from the sun. Like, cannot stress enough how you literally feel like you're reading from a page.
Brooke
And you used to say that to me with the Kindle, because that was, like, one of my concerns. I was like, no, but I like to read, you know, outside, on the go. Whatever. It really is. It's like, that's the Kindle technology.
Danielle
I don't know how they did it.
Brooke
It's amazing. And the matte pages are everything. And. And that's really it. I have a pink case. Like, it's like a Kindle official case. So when you.
Danielle
It's right over there.
Brooke
I know Because I've been. When you snap it closed, it locks. Your Kindle. Love when you open it, it opens it with the Kindle. So I like that one. I'll link that on my Amazon storefront, too.
Danielle
I think I need to get that one. I have, like, a clear case on it that I put stickers on. And it's fun. And it does protect the button, so it doesn't, like, turn on or anything. But I do love how it would, like, turn on on its own.
Brooke
Open it like a book. And it's not super thick. It's like a nice, like, pink leather. It's good.
Danielle
It's really.
Brooke
Yeah. So that really is my reading routine. I mean, if I'm, like, doing, like, a morning read session, like, I love doing it with, like, my iced coffee and, like, whatever. But when I read at night, it's really like, I want to finish everything before I get into bed. Like.
Danielle
Yeah, you're, like, going to sleep.
Brooke
Like, yes, I'm. I'm ready to, like, as soon as, you know, I get to the point where I want to close my eyes. I can.
Danielle
I. Have you ever woken up and your Kindle's next to you?
Brooke
No, I always will be. Have enough energy to put it down. Right.
Danielle
You know, I mean. Yeah, I often will wake up and it's just, like, laying there.
Lucy Score
Yeah.
Danielle
But it's perfect. It's right on the page that it left out. It's. I know.
Brooke
That's the thing. It's amazing. It will, like, auto lock after a certain amount of time.
Danielle
Like, oh, Danny's asleep.
Brooke
Like, yeah. Another thing. I'm just going on about the Kindle because I really. I mean, the past, like, two years, I've become a convert. On the bottom. On any Kindle, you can go into settings and have it do, oh, like, a bunch of sizes. So I have mine on time left in the book, and it will adjust to your reading speed. So it's like, right now, it's like, you know, you have six hours left in the book. My mom does time until end of chapter because she does like to finish on a chapter before she goes to bed.
Danielle
So she likes to know. Yeah, it is nice how you can customize it. Like, you could probably say, like, your pages.
Brooke
Yes. You could do the percentage.
Danielle
I think I do percentage. That's what mine is right now, if.
Brooke
You want to see that. Or you could, like, turn that off. I don't know.
Danielle
Yeah.
Brooke
Throws you off or whatever. Because for me, I always liked the book thing to be like, okay, like, I'M this chunk done, like, right.
Danielle
You can literally see the pages. So this is kind of that same. Yes.
Brooke
I also just feel like I read faster on a Kindle. Not that it's a race, but everything's a race to me.
Danielle
So competitive.
Brooke
So I do feel like I'm caught. Like, it's easier to just go to the next page.
Danielle
You have to lick your finger to get the paper open.
Brooke
Yeah, yeah.
Danielle
No, I agree.
Brooke
Some. That's my. My reading routine.
Danielle
I feel like I'm really there.
Brooke
Yeah, you're just in my. In my bedroom with, like, the lights off. I feel like that's usually what it is. And like, using my freaking Kindle to, like, flipping it the other way to, like, make sure that nothing.
Danielle
Yeah, it's literally using it as a light to make sure everything's off the bed. We're good to go. Got the charger. Yeah.
Brooke
It does it all.
Danielle
No, it really does it all. My reading routine is very similar in the sense that, like, everything is done before getting into bed with my Kindle. A couple things I guess I do differently. We've got our essential oils. I'm putting on my little stress relief essential oils under my nose to kind of start, you know, inhaling and getting really calm. Honestly, like, I need, like, the lavender, a little eucalyptus maybe. I also have been really into. I do live alone right now, so I can just have the lights on whenever. Is my red light bulbs, which I know.
Brooke
Yes, you do.
Danielle
Sometimes.
Brooke
Yeah, it's nice.
Danielle
It is really nice to have the red light on. It supposed to, like, promote sleepiness, they say. I don't know.
Brooke
It's. It's like how your phone goes into, like, warm mode.
Lucy Score
Same, like.
Brooke
And yeah, the Kindle. The Kindle colors off, goes into warm mode. Because it's something about, like, the blue tone of lights versus, like, the warm tone.
Danielle
Like, Right. You want the warm tone at night. So I have that going. I also usually play. I have like, 30 minutes on my alarm clock thing of, like, relaxing music. And then after 30 minutes, it goes to white noise. So it's usually. I know I'm like, reading for.
Brooke
So do you. So you get into bed and start.
Danielle
And then, yeah, it starts. And usually I fall asleep within that 30 minutes. Like, you can cuss, you know. Yeah, I customize that for me, but it's usually the perfect amount of time. Sometimes I fall asleep reading because I'm just like, you know, I need to get to the next page. But even though my eyes are falling asleep or I'll, you know, Turn it off, Pop it in my nightstand. I have a little section for my Kindle in my nightstand. I got like, this whole little basket situation, and I think that's pretty much it. I usually like to have a water next to me, but every now and then I will, like, make hot tea. And it's like before I brush my teeth and I'm like, drinking some hot tea.
Brooke
Reading.
Danielle
I do. I do like that to set the vibe. It depends on the book, you know?
Brooke
Yeah, totally. And I try to make my bed, like a place that I don't do, like, tech stuff. But the Kindle is an exception because obviously that's reading.
Danielle
Yeah.
Brooke
I will, like, get excited to get into bed earlier knowing that I have, like, a good book.
Danielle
Yeah.
Brooke
On my content plate.
Danielle
No, it is definitely exciting to do that too. And, like, I'm the same way. I don't really get in bed with my computer. It's a very rare day if I do that. Like, I think it's just Kindles only and phones, of course. Unfortunately, it's definitely happen.
Brooke
Those are. Those are the things.
Danielle
There's so much.
Brooke
I love how affordable it is. I love, you know, my reading speed, how easy it is to share with, like, people on your account. It's just. I mean, it really changed my life. And I was. Not that I was so anti for a while, but I just.
Danielle
You didn't know what you were missing.
Brooke
Exactly. And there's. You can never replace the feeling of a crisp, like the book scent, but whatever. But you can still do that. Like, I still love to have like a physical copy. Like my favorite books, you know.
Danielle
Yeah. I feel like the story here is that Kindle is very customizable, which is really nice. Tailored to different types of Kindles. If you like to take notes, you can get the Kindle scribe.
Brooke
Yeah.
Danielle
If you want to see some color or you just want like a good.
Brooke
If you have children's books that you're reading too, those are good. Like, if you're.
Danielle
That's. They want some color.
Brooke
Yeah. They need to.
Danielle
But definitely make sure to go shop. The Amazon Book Sale, April 23rd through 28th. We'll have some details in the description and we'll also have our storefronts listed below for you guys to shop some of our favorite titles. And I'm excited to interview Lucy.
Lucy Score
Score.
Danielle
I'm nervous.
Brooke
Me too. No, we're. It's gonna be great. And I can't wait for you guys to listen.
Danielle
Okay, let's get into it.
Brooke
All right. We are here now with Lucy. Score. Lucy, thank you so much for joining us this morning.
Lucy Score
Thanks for having me. I love talking about books.
Danielle
I'm so glad you have, like, this amazing setup behind you too. I just feel like you're all cozied up and you're tired again and everything.
Lucy Score
Yeah, it's like. It's a whole. It's a whole vibe, you know, it's that early spring where it's still sort of winter.
Danielle
Yes, exactly. Exactly. Have your cozy beverage. It's just. It's just the perfect way. This is a great way to start our day, and we're just. Just so grateful to have you on Gals on the Go. Kind of feels like a full circle moment.
Lucy Score
So excited to be here.
Brooke
Amazing. So to. To kind of kick it off since we know that you are clearly a book lover yourself, and we know that you grew up, like, loving books, which we'll get into how that translates into you becoming, you know, so. So famously known as an author. Do you have any, like, standout books or, like, moments maybe from, like, childhood or high school that kind of shaped you into who you are? I know Danielle and I talk about this all the time. Series that kind of, like, raised us and, like, made us, like, fall in love with reading.
Lucy Score
Yes. Oh, my gosh. My mom was a librarian, so we spent a lot of time in libraries growing up, and I was definitely a Sweet Valley Twins, Sweet Valley High Babysitters Club girl. Like, I went through those series, like.
Danielle
Yeah, it's the best when you finish one and you're like, now I need to get the other.
Lucy Score
I. I absolutely devoured them.
Danielle
And seriously, thank God for Kindle, because now it's so much easier to just get the next bus gang, right?
Lucy Score
I know. It's. You finish a book at 11:30 at night, you're like, oh, you know what? I'm just gonna download the next one.
Danielle
So incredible.
Brooke
No, it's. It's, like, too easy. So great. We love it. Yeah. No, I feel like a lot of your books have that sort of, like, nostalgic, like, 2000s energy in the best way. Like, they feel like very much so. Like a classic rom com. Like, I feel like when I think of, like, those 2000s romcoms, like, the Meet Cutes and things like that, like, do you feel like those also sort of helped you shape your writing in any way? Like, were you ever a fan of, like, any, like, TV shows or movies?
Danielle
Good question.
Lucy Score
Oh, my gosh. Yes. Also, can we bring those back? Can we just have all of those? You know, one of My all time favorites and I still rewatch it all the time is. I don't know if you guys ever watched it, but she's the man with Amanda Bymes.
Brooke
One of the best movies of all time. No, you're. I'm there with you. Yes.
Lucy Score
My. My sister and sister in law and I still text each other on probably a monthly basis. The Chew. Like you have a secret gif.
Danielle
Like, oh my God.
Lucy Score
Little chews.
Danielle
No, there's so many like one liners from that movie. It's just so iconic. Like if you need like a cheer up, that's the movie.
Lucy Score
It's perfection. I. I love that movie so much. I. I want to live in that movie.
Danielle
Oh my gosh.
Lucy Score
That's a great example.
Brooke
No, that's per. Yeah. I feel like that like era of rom com is like what your writing gives and like, so you. That makes perfect sense. Like that's. That's your. Your.
Danielle
Your.
Lucy Score
My inspiration.
Danielle
And also along with inspiration, I. We feel like a lot of your books have a very small town setting, very cozy feel. We were talking about, like cozy mornings and just having that feeling. Does that draw inspiration from where you grew up or if there's another source? Like, where did this small town setting come from for you?
Lucy Score
Y. I grew up in a really small town and then I went to college in an equally small town. In college, the closest mall was like 40 minutes away, but we did have a Taco Bell, thankfully. Yeah.
Danielle
Important.
Brooke
That's important.
Danielle
Yes. We love Taco Bell.
Lucy Score
I grew up in these small communities where everybody knew everybody and everybody was in everyone else's business. So I just, I appreciate that, you know, as the world seems to get bigger and bigger, I still love the feel of belonging to a community.
Danielle
I couldn't agree more. Like, I think someone asked me recently, like, what do you miss about college? And it was that just like being in. Because I didn't grow up in like the super small town. So college kind of felt like that you were walking along, you know, to class and you ran into someone and then they're sitting down at the quad and you join them and you know, they're gossiping about everything. There's just like everyone knows everyone's business and there is something to be said about that.
Lucy Score
Yeah. Yeah. And, you know, I think there's like this shared experience, especially in college, that you. You can't replicate once you get out into the real world, you know, because everybody's in that school with kind of similar goals, you know, like, take these classes, get this degree and so you're all going through something really similar and once you graduate that the similarities tend to end. Everybody kind of goes off on their own paths. So I think it's really cool that we' kind of started to reestablish some of these communities like in the book.
Danielle
World, you know, 100%. Brooke and I both live in Manhattan. I feel like we, we both went to the University of Georgia and we moved here and it was like, oh, so we all have totally different schedules now. It is not the same. And to your point, it's so nice to read a book where everyone knows everyone. Everyone's chit chatting and you feel it feels like an intimate, cozy vibe. Yeah, I love that.
Brooke
Yeah, that's amazing.
Danielle
It's officially here. The Amazon book sale is live and we could not be more excited to stock up.

Brooke
Happy reading. I want to talk a little bit about like writing and your process because I just find it so fascinating and like just so impressive. Honestly, like, and you've written so many books, you've written, like, over 40 books at this point.
Lucy Score
Right.
Brooke
Like, so.
Danielle
So I've lost count.
Lucy Score
Okay, well, that's.
Brooke
That's how you know. That's how you know. Do you feel like you are constantly, like, inspired? Like, are you writing one book, thinking about the idea for the next book, or is it something that, like, you have to kind of get in that flow state? I just am so fascinated by this. Because you have so many characters and concepts and plots and, like, even keeping track of all of those, it's amazing.
Lucy Score
It's pretty wild. I think I'm in a constant state of inspiration because things are always happening that make me think, oh, well, what if this happened? Or, what if that changed? But once I sit down to actually write, inspiration is never my problem. Focus is. There's so many things, like, so many things that are going on, so many things on the to do list, like the cat walking in the office. There's just so many things that. That are trying to pull my focus. So I get really, like, almost militant about my. My. Okay, it's writing time. I'm gonna sit down. I write in sprints. I wear headphones. I blast music. I try to. I guess it's kind of sensory deprivation. I'm trying to block out as much of the world as possible so I can focus on the one that's in my head. But, yeah, it's. It's kind of. It's. It's interesting trying to squash all the distractions for extended periods of time.
Danielle
What kind of music are you listening to when you're writing? This is so interesting to me.
Brooke
That doesn't distract. Yeah.
Lucy Score
Yeah.
Danielle
That doesn't distract you.
Lucy Score
I have a playlist that I listen to for every book. It's the same playlist, and it's this crazy, eclectic mix of everything. But because it's the same playlist, as soon as I hear the first song, which is, of course, Taylor Swift.
Danielle
Oh, New Year's Day.
Lucy Score
New Year's Day. Like, when I hear that song, I'm instantly in writing mode. You know, my brain knows what it's. What to do. I have a lot of Cage the Elephant on there. I love them. The Killers, Alicia Keys. Like, it's just a very eclectic mix.
Danielle
That is so interesting that you listen to music with words. I am typing. That is amazing. But honestly, New Year's Day says it all. Like, if I just need to get into a main character moment, I am listening to that song.
Lucy Score
Yeah. Immediately, it's. It's perfection.
Danielle
Wow, that is so interesting because I'll be, like, doing emails and I have to have, like, instrumental music on. But that's why your books are so good. You have.
Lucy Score
I think everybody's brain is wired just a little bit differently. I know a lot of people who have to write in complete silence or some people who have to go to, like, a crowded cafe because they need the noise of people. So it's everybody's.
Danielle
Everybody.
Brooke
That background noise. Yeah, I get that. So you. So you're doing most of your writing locked in in your office. I mean, it's so cozy and perfect. I love that.
Lucy Score
Yeah. I have. The door to my office is one of those swinging bookcases. So it looks like a bookcase. It's.
Danielle
No way.
Lucy Score
Yeah. Was. I was like, I want a layer.
Danielle
That is so cool and Disney. Your lady.
Lucy Score
I write best in the afternoon. I've fought it for years. I. I was like, what if I could just get it done in the morning? I can't get anything done in the morning. I'm not. I'm not a morning creative person. So I. I have my nice, slow, cozy mornings where I might take care of a few admin things or some stuff around the house. But then once the afternoon hits, then I'm. I'm all in. In my lady lair for writing.
Danielle
Makes sense.
Brooke
Amazing. So, like, hey, I. I'm reading Story of my life now. I love it and thank you. No, it's wonderful. I have to tell you. So Hazel gets inspired for her writing, and she has to. She kind of has to get out of her setting, I guess. So do you relate to that, like, in a character form, like, in between. Let's just say, you know, you finish one trilogy and you're, like, you know, plotting for the next one. Are you like, I gotta get out and, like, see a new town and, you know, kind of live in it for a second and, like, take inspiration from that? Or is it really all just in your head, sort of like imagination gone wild? Which. I also get that.
Lucy Score
It's. It's definitely in my head. But I really. With Story of my Life, I really played with the idea of. I feel like all of us have fantasized about just running away, you know, just like, okay, this whole thing is not working. I'm gonna run away and get a fresh start. And that's. You know, I've fantasized about that. But obviously I really like my house and very comfortable here, so. But I really wanted to just kind of play with that because I feel like that's one of those universal themes that. That all women have experienced at one point, like, I just. I don't want to do this anymore.
Danielle
I want.
Lucy Score
I'm gonna go someplace else. I'm gonna. To have a different life. So, yeah, that's. That's where that inspiration came from. But, you know, for me, personally, I'm. I'm very much. I'm a hermit. I'm an introvert. I love being at home. So when it does come time to get some new, fresh inspiration, I have to make myself leave the house. I have to go be around people, because, you know, that's the real world's where all the inspiration is. So if. If you're not exposing yourself to it, you're. You might dry up a little bit creatively.
Danielle
That definitely can happen. I feel like, like you said, it's so important to just get out there and have something happen to you. Have a conversation with someone that eavesdrop on somebody.
Brooke
I'm there. I love.
Danielle
Brooke loves that.
Brooke
I love to read over people's shoulders. Oh, my God, this stuff is there on the phone.
Lucy Score
I'm like, what. Who are you emailing? What book are you reading? What's going on? What's your story?
Danielle
Yeah, I bet you're like, so, what book you read?
Lucy Score
Oh, I'm super nosy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've. I've run across people reading my books in public. And my. And my thing is, I know I'm always like, ah. But my thing is I never go up and introduce myself and be like, I wrote that. I. I'll. I'll be like, do you like that book? Are you. Are you enjoying it?
Danielle
Oh, my God.
Lucy Score
And then depending on their answer is whether or not I'll introduce myself.
Danielle
That is so cool. So have you introduced yourself before? And they fully out.
Lucy Score
I have. It was really fun. It was on the beach. I saw somebody reading my book, and I, like, ducked under her umbrella all creepy, like. I'm like, excuse me, are you enjoying that book? That's.
Danielle
I. I think that's the perfect way to approach it, you know, because maybe you're just inquiring about market research. Yeah.
Lucy Score
Then, you know, if she's like, yeah, it's not very good. It's. It's over hyped. Then I can just be like, okay, thanks. And then I'll leave, and then peace out.
Danielle
And then eventually she'll see your photo somewhere and be like, that was art. But, like, that's a later problem.
Brooke
That would be a crazy 360 moment. Like, she gets to, like, the last page of the book. And it's like your picture.
Danielle
And she' that is incredible. No, that's really, really funny. Also, guys, as a reminder, because Story of My Life is her newest book. It is on the Amazon book sale as well as things we Hide from the Light. So I feel like it's the perfect time, like, to kind of. Oh, she's got it.
Brooke
I love if I like the physical copies. Ready.
Lucy Score
Sweet. Hide from, like, the hardback edition.
Danielle
Wow.
Lucy Score
And fall into temptation, the paperback.
Danielle
Wait, those looks so cute.
Lucy Score
I know.
Danielle
On sale right now.
Lucy Score
Vibe. Yeah, I'm. I love sales. I'm a. I'm a bargain shopper.
Danielle
I like. Oh. Like, I mean, completely. It's such a great excuse.
Brooke
Wait, so I see you physical books there, too. So are you personally, when you're reading, are you like Kindle? Are you a hard copy? It varies. Like, where do you lie?
Lucy Score
I'm both. But every night when I go to bed, I read on my Kindle because I. I don't want to have a light on. I don't want to have, like. Okay. You know, I need the room to be dark so I can start getting tired. So every night I read on my Kindle. I think it's this Kindle's name is like Lucy's seventh Kindle or something.
Danielle
Seriously. Saying it's like, which one is this? But it keeps track really nicely of everything, which I appreciate.
Lucy Score
Yeah. And I just. I love just being able to read in bed like that. It's very convenient. And it's great for travel, too.
Danielle
Yeah. And with the Kindle color soft, too, how you can see the colors of the title page, like.
Lucy Score
Yeah, it changed everything.
Danielle
It's like a little luxury.
Brooke
Yeah. No big fans of that. So will you read two books at once, or is that, like, too confusing for your reading?
Lucy Score
No, I read. I read a lot. A lot of books at the same time because I'm a mood reader. So I always have at least one nonfiction book going, at least one ebook fiction going, and one audiobook going. So I know. It's so much. It's so much.
Danielle
Wow. All the while you could be also writing for all you know.
Lucy Score
Yeah, yeah, I know. It's. It's crazy. Like, I think as much as I'm outputting, I need a continuous stream of input, you know? So like, if I'm. If I'm writing and I, you know, I wrote 4,000 words today or whatever, that doesn't usually happen. It's much less than that. But I. I need to be consuming stories.
Danielle
When you're reading, do you prefer to read books that are in completely different genres or more similar to your own? Or is it what matters?
Lucy Score
Romance is my absolute favorite thing to read and write, so I'm always reading romance. But I love everything. I love mystery thrillers. I love nonfiction. Like, here's how to get your life together.
Brooke
We love Mel Robbins. We're big Mel Robbins fans.
Lucy Score
Yes, let them.
Danielle
Yes, let them. Five second rule. All the rules. Give me all the rules.
Lucy Score
Yeah, I. I read everything. I just finished. Hang on, let me think. Let me look at it. Just finished this on Kindle.
Brooke
No, that is constantly me with my Kindle. I'm like, wait, let me just go. And then I, like, pull up, like, my Amazon app, because, like, it's all on there.
Lucy Score
So it's like, I just finished the Wedding People, which was great.
Danielle
I've heard about.
Lucy Score
So good. That was. That was awesome. Yeah, so that was. That's a lot of fun.
Danielle
Everyone's reading that right now, so I feel a little blind. I need to get even though my friend ended up telling me, like, the whole story, and it sounds so good.
Brooke
Because she was like, it's a little.
Danielle
Sad, you know, I was like, oh, gosh.
Brooke
A little warning. Yeah. Like, you want to give people, like, a little warning, but you don't want to give away the whole plot.
Lucy Score
Right, Right. It's triumphant. It has a great. You feel good when you finish it.
Danielle
I like that word.
Brooke
Yeah, that's a great way of putting it.
Danielle
1000%. So we know that things we hide from the light and. Story of my life. Have this, like, grumpy sunshine trope. Do you have a favorite trope that you like to write or to read?
Lucy Score
Enemies to lovers, baby.
Danielle
All day.
Lucy Score
All day. Ye. I love the conflict of that. I love the banter. It just. I love the obstacle, you know? I. I want all the reasons in the world why these two can't be together. So when they do get together, it's a really big deal. Yeah.
Danielle
It's so hot.
Lucy Score
It's so hot.
Danielle
That must be so fun to start writing and be like, oh, they don't.
Brooke
Even know what's coming next.
Lucy Score
We hate each other. This is great.
Brooke
Yep. Yep. And they have, like, a specific reason to dislike each other. And it's like, oh, yeah, that's a. That's a good one for sure.
Lucy Score
Well, in the Knock Em out series, I knew the third couple was gonna be Sloane and Lucien. And I didn't know until the end of book two why they hated each other. Like, I was starting to get really Nervous. I was like, I'm the author. I should know this. I should. I should know why they can't stand to be in a room together. So I was really relieved when inspiration struck. Rock.
Brooke
So do you not know until you're. That's for me. So impressive. You're not like making like a big pin board almost like, of like, you know, the murder mystery. Like who done it? Like, they.
Lucy Score
I do that also. It's just so I.
Brooke
They.
Lucy Score
They call it pantsing or plotting. So plotting is when you outline and pantsing is when you write by the seat of your pants. Like you have no idea what's going on. I always start with an outline. Like I have a pretty detailed outline every single time. And every get into it, I'm writing it and I'm like, well, you know, maybe it would make more sense if this happened or, well, what was their reaction to this? So it's like 50% of every book I didn't plan for.
Danielle
Wow.
Lucy Score
I know. I keep thinking I should be better at this by now, but I think at this point it's just part of my process.
Danielle
100%. It always ends up great. So I didn't like we would change that. I like the pantsing or plotting. It's so funny. When you said pantsing, I think of like someone pulling down.
Lucy Score
I know, right? That's how they write. They don't write with any pants on.
Brooke
Right.
Danielle
Just on your pants.
Brooke
Their process. It's, you know, that and some. A Go to playlist.
Danielle
Yes.
Lucy Score
Yeah, exactly. Oh, my God.
Brooke
Also, you have an amazing, amazing community of like stands of your books, which obviously, like, you know, you've experienced in real life.
Danielle
Yeah.
Brooke
Do you have any, like, crazy moments that like, really stand out to you? Like maybe at a specific like book signing or like at some sort of conference or anything where you were just like, wow, this is like absolutely epic.
Danielle
Like, I got fans.
Brooke
Yeah.
Danielle
Yeah.
Brooke
Like, wow.
Lucy Score
I just got back from book tour for story of my life and I remember sitting on a stage looking out and I'm like, I think all these people made a mistake. I don't think they realized it. Me, I did have, you know, every. Every reader interaction is so awesome, but I had a reader tell me that she named her baby girl Lucy after me. And I was like, yes. You know, accomplishment unlocked. I was so excited. Readers have gotten like book themed tattoos and I just. I don't know. It is the coolest thing to be part of this, this community. It. It really means a lot to me to finally belong someplace that's really, really special.
Danielle
And you said tattoo. Yeah.
Lucy Score
Yeah. Especially with like, things we never got over. The daisies on the COVID There are daisy tattoos out there. Yep. Yeah, it's. It's really. I just can't believe that I wrote something that resonated with somebody on a level like that. It's. It's pretty amazing.
Danielle
Well, I even think about books I've read, it's just like, it reminds you of a certain time of your life or like maybe a vacation you were on and you were, you know, so engulfed in this story or the story inspired you to do something in your real life. Like, it's. It, it really, it makes sense to me. But I'm sure there's moments where you're like, imposter syndrome. How is everyone in this room here for me? Someone naming their child Lucy? How special. They spelled it the same way and everything.
Lucy Score
Yeah. Yeah. So I was like, I. Yeah, I thought that was really incredible.
Danielle
No, seriously, it's.
Lucy Score
I feel like life is just a series of pinch me moments at this point.
Danielle
And I think that's a great place to be in. I just keep on getting pinched.
Brooke
So special. Yeah, because you've always been a writer. Right. But it was more like nonfiction and. And then it kind of switched into this like more creative style writing.
Lucy Score
Yeah. I. I worked for a local newspaper. I did marketing for a local accounting firm. So there was always, you know, writing involved, but not fiction.
Brooke
Yeah, not the fun stuff.
Lucy Score
This was, this was my hobby on the side nights and weekends until. Until I was able to go full time.
Danielle
Because forcame your day job.
Lucy Score
Right.
Danielle
That's always the best kind of on the note of, you know, you impacting people and people loving your books. I feel like a lot of people love your books because it can help them get back into reading or even fall in love with reading as an adult. So. So what would you say to those people who maybe are on a reading rut or they want to start reading? They just need a little encouragement. Like, I feel like you've got some words of wisdom for this.
Lucy Score
Definitely. I think a lot of us, our first real experiences with reading was what was assigned to us in school. And it's usually the classics and they didn't resonate with me. So thankfully I had my mom who was constantly pushing fun fiction on me. So I think if you want to read, you just need to find the books that resonate with you. You don't, don't. You don't have to read the important books you read the ones that make you feel something.
Danielle
I love that. It's because sometimes I feel like people get down on themselves about, oh, I should be reading this, or everyone in my friend group's reading this or maybe book club. And you just can't get into the book. Totally. That's such a great piece of advice because I feel like people get down on themselves and like, oh, well, I didn't finish it, you know.
Brooke
Well, that's okay. Yeah, no, life's too short to fin. Finish books you don't like.
Lucy Score
That's exactly. And there are so many books and authors out there that you will find some that really consume you. And I think that's. That's one of the best feelings in the world, just being able to escape into a book. So I. I hope that everybody gets.
Danielle
That experience, I think a hundred percent. And they can get that experience. Because the Amazon book sale is happening right now just as a reminder. So you guys definitely need to go read her newest book story My Life, which is on the Amazon book sale. Also Things We Hide from the Light, both on sale. She showed us a beautiful. So many. I mean, literally 40 plus. So, I mean, there's something for everyone.
Lucy Score
Yes. Go. Go load up your cart and. And escape into a book.
Brooke
I know that's my favorite thing to do is like, to disconnect from like. Yeah, it's like, you know, tv, movies, it's all great. But like a book, you're truly like disconnected. And whether it be Kindle or book, like, there's no notifications. Like you are. Are like, no, you're on.
Danielle
Do not distract.
Lucy Score
Yeah. It's incredible. I mean, just that our brains are wired to do that, to take us away and put us into the shoes of this completely fictional character in this fictional world. Like, that's wild. It's magic.
Brooke
I agree. I feel like it is good for your imagination too. Like, I tell myself that I'm like, wow. It's good for me to like be like picturing this whole thing, like. Yeah. So used to so much like, stimulation. It's nice to like, use your brain in that way.
Lucy Score
Yeah. Yeah. You're creating the world in your own. In your own mind.
Danielle
I know. And not have any notifications or anything. Like, I know. Do not disturb mode. Lucy, you such a joy. This was such a great way to start the day and we are so appreciative. We know our gals and the GO listeners are going to go crazy over this episode. So thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us.
Lucy Score
Thank you guys. This was a blast. It was awesome to hang out that.
Danielle
Gotcha. All right, you guys, thanks so much for listening. We'll have our Amazon storefronts linked below. We'll have these books linked below. And thank you, Amazon, for. For sponsoring this episode.
