Damon Hadfield
We got a great show for you this week. Obviously, we're recording this on Wednesday, just a couple hours after the Nintendo Direct that had the big reveal of the Switch 2. Still so much to dive into and discuss. But first, quick announcement. We wanted to let you know that we're moving the record date starting next week of Game Scoop to Tuesday afternoon, which means new episodes will go live Wednesday afternoon. We have some data that suggests podcast episodes that are published earlier in the week have longer tails. So we're going to see if that gives a boost to the podcast at all. We'll see how it goes. Nothing else is changing. It'll be the same show, same people and everything. We're just changing the date that we're recording to Tuesday afternoon. So please be excited for that Wednesday Scoops. Okay. Nintendo Switch 2 out June 5, two months from now, two days before IGN Live kicks off this year. So yes, wherever you're traveling from, you'll be able to play Your Nintendo Switch 2 on your way to IGN Live. Lots of a pretty good launch lineup starting to take shape. In my opinion. There's no, you know, nothing on the level of Breath of the Wild, but I understand that Mario Kart, Mario Kart World is, you know, a much more, has much more mainstream, broad appeal. But, you know, the Switch 1 launched with what many consider to be the greatest video game of all time. So we're kind of missing that from this launch item. But one thing that people are getting hung up on is the price. It's $450 just for the system, which is a 50% increase over the Nintendo Switch 1 base model, which has been $300 since 2017. If you want Mario Kart 8, you're going to be paying $500 and that that's the way to go. You don't want to buy Mario Kart 8 separately because it's $80 for some reason. Expensive. Yeah. Anyway, I don't want to paint a picture that I'm like down on the Switch too. I'm excited about it. I will absolutely be pre ordering one. But I do think it's a little bit more. I think analysts are predicting more about around $400 and I think it is. There's no way around it. Like $500 is quite is going to be a much harder sell for families than $300 was for the Nintendo Switch one. But, Nick, what are your first impressions? I know you were on Nintendo voice chat watching this thing live earlier this morning.
Sam Claiborne
I mean, not unexpected for me. You know, in my heart, my wallet was praying that it'd be $400, but I knew the cynic in me might have been correct. At $500, it makes sense. I think this is, you know, I guess it remains to be seen whether or not it's going to have parity with the PS5, but I think Nintendo seems to be kind of aiming it at as such, with the touting of 4K and up to 120 frames per second. Let's be very clear, I am going to be buying one.
Damon Hadfield
Oh, yeah, we're all getting one. Yeah.
Sam Claiborne
But I do understand how that could be a little bit of a sticker shock for families who, you know, maybe have the Switch mini and just like, okay, maybe it's time to upgrade and I'll get the new one. What could it cost, you know, A dollar extra?
Damon Hadfield
Dollar.
Sam Claiborne
No, a little bit more this time.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah. Justin, how are you feeling about the Switch 2?
Justin Davis
Yeah, I mean, if I were to chart my excitement for the Switch 2, I came out of the direct super pumped. I think Mario Kart looks awesome. It's Mario Kart Forza Horizon. You know, like, I'm just. I think Donkey Kong looks awesome. I know we're going to talk about that stuff a little bit later, but then my excitement is like, wait a second. The console costs how much money? Whoa. Like, Mario Kart is $80. The Joy Con are $90. The camera is $50. It's like, oh. Like, it just. It makes my heart hurt and it makes like, you know, we've talked about it on Scoop for a while, about how the concept of a game console of, like, you have to pay this $500 entry fee just for the. The privilege of them paying another $80 to play video games. It's like, it's no wonder that PC and mobile gaming has been doing so well. Like, it's. It's really disappointing, especially given that it has an LCD screen. So, you know, you know that in two years from now, they're going to have an OLED model, you know, that's going to have a bigger hard drive and whatever else. And then, like, we're all going to want that. So maybe the cheaper model, too. Yeah, I mean, that's the hope. Like, look, like, I'm such a Nintendo. I guess I shouldn't call myself a fanboy, but, like, I've Been a fan for my whole life and I will be a fan for my whole life. I think the games look awesome. I think that the console looks really great. It's just price that's really it for me. I'm just disappointed by the price tag, that's all.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah. And Sam, we just talked about this on next gen console watch. But now share your thoughts for the games components.
Nick Limone
Sure thing. Yeah. And you can check out next gen consoles. Tweet a long conversation about this on that. And I had some context that I provided for this partly just hinted at by Justin Joy. Cons costing $90, games costing $80. The system's not expensive. Everything's expensive. Yeah, everything. And, and, and so are iPhones by the way. And so are TVs. Like everything's expensive. So it's terrible. Like I hate it. But you know, like that's the situation now I do want to contextualize. We keep on comparing this to Switch one. We need to compare this to like things and like things are currently handheld PCs, right?
Sam Claiborne
Yep.
Nick Limone
And all handheld PCs are 750 bucks or more. They just all are.
Damon Hadfield
I mean this is a. Hold on. The entry level steam deck is $400.
Nick Limone
Yeah, I'm getting to that Damon.
Damon Hadfield
Okay.
Nick Limone
The old ass Steam deck which is also like an old ass Switch is also cheaper than this. This should be compared to things that could run things on your television at 4K which you can't do in a lot of other things. It's got a lot going for it in just the fact that it's a handheld that that's pretty slim. That has a lot of tech in it that looks like it can play these big indie games. Hades can play open world games. Elden Ring that these other systems can play usually. But sometimes the seam deck chugs on this stuff. It's not especially great at playing every single big new open world game or even open world games from three years ago. So this should be better at that. That's what you're paying for. And you are getting a cheaper system than those just outright. Yes, you can go buy old systems and old handhelds for cheaper. So I'm not defending the price. I'm contextualizing it. There is a different world we're looking at here and boy if you are sticker shocked by this, get ready for the PlayStation 6 because we already got a PlayStation for $600 and $650 and $700 back in the day. It's going to happen again.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah, I'd liken the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware reveal to the Rog Ally X, which granted we don't know much about the processing power of the Nintendo Switch 2. I know that they did confirm that there is Nvidia GPU architecture in there. But the Rog Ally X, just in terms of sheer display, it's a 1080p screen, just like the Nintendo Switch 2.120Hz display, just like the Nintendo Switch 2. What it doesn't have that the Switch 2 has is HDR capability, which I think is a big win for being able to play games on the go. So.
Nick Limone
And just a general upgrade when you dock it. That's like a thing, right? Oh yeah. Like these other handhelds, they have docks in some formats, but this has an upsell when you dock it for at least one game, which is Metroid Pro.
Sam Claiborne
It's upscaling capabilities that also has a fan built in. When you want to connect your Rog Ally X to a TV screen, you need to buy a third party proprietary or a third party device that is USB C out to USB display and, and it is just going to run the game natively on the handheld with no upscaling capabilities in that regard. So the Switch 2 I think is a slam dunk on a lot of handheld PCs right now.
Nick Limone
Yeah. So I mean Switch fans and Nintendo fans should be like, woof, this is the most expensive Nintendo console. That's fine. But there's just other contexts out there right now and you know, you don't. There's a lot of games that you can play for the next couple years and then maybe Justin's right, or maybe I'm right. Maybe you're gonna be paying even more in a couple years. Or you might have a cheaper version with everything stuck together with no magnets, just glue.
Justin Davis
It's all gonna be labo made out of cardboard. These days are my favorite days, working at IGN and working as a games journalist. Like, new hardware, new announcements, new games, just the excitement. Like, I love it. Like, and I love it as a fan and I love it as someone that gets to do this for a living. And so the Switch wrapped and I'm like, man, what a great presentation. I'm super hyped for this console. It comes out in a couple months, like, it's almost here. And I said, oh, it's weird. They didn't talk about the price though. And then as the news trickled out for the next few hours, I'm like, oh, okay, I get it.
Sam Claiborne
By the way, it's $500. Okay, bye.
Damon Hadfield
Let's Talk about Mario Kart World, which looks really cool. And I do agree, you know, that's a system seller. If you're gonna get.
Justin Davis
It's got, it's got a cow on a motorcycle.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah.
Sam Claiborne
You got a crab on there. In a go kart probably.
Justin Davis
You could probably get a crab and a coconut. Who knows? I don't know.
Nick Limone
It has. What we usually describe in the industry is a bunch of crazy junk. You know, it's like, like cars are going inside other cars. There's like, those clouds look really good. The water looks good.
Sam Claiborne
That hdr man, there's.
Justin Davis
There's rail grinding.
Nick Limone
Yeah, there's no grinding. The wall jumps. It's just loaded with what we hope to be an open world based around secrets and discovery and things like that. Along with the Forza style long tracks and meet up tracks and stuff like that. I was saying this also an action console. Watch that. Everybody's comparing this to Forza Horizon and Burnout paradise and stuff. I would also compare it to Breath of the Wild. This is that evolution, right? It's like taking the thing and just stretching it to all these different places and keeping the core of Mario Kart and saying like, what else can Mario Kart do? Can it kind of be Super Mario Brothers also? Can't it kind of be Zelda also? Like, that's what it's doing. And what I really hope it does is hide a bunch of reasons and things for me to just like run my car off edges. Like I hope there's like collectibles you have to bash into or stunt jumps you have to pull off by trying over and over again and like doing like fun burnout type stuff, you know, Like, I want that type of things to be in the game. And I think we're getting a full direct on this and to see more of that. Right?
Justin Davis
Yeah, I completely agree. I hope that it takes advantage of its open world structure and gives me a bunch of kind of zany and kooky mini games and other things to do besides just racing between point A to point B. And like this is Nintendo we're talking about. So I think the odds are good that that's the case. But look at. There's a crazy Sandworm. Man, I forgot about that Sandworm. So no, like, I like, that's what I like most about Forza Horizon is all the kind of between race stuff and shenanigans you can get up to. Then I hope that this game world is full of that. I'm pumped. And like, I think it's implied. Like, there's all these collectibles and outfits that you can get that. Like, you're probably collecting that stuff, right? Like, I hope there's a good, like, progression system.
Damon Hadfield
Am I imagining this at the logo? The world, the colors of the world. Is the color palette of Super Mario World. Am I imagining that or is that intentional?
Justin Davis
The world looks like Super Mario World. Yeah, I didn't. I mean, I haven't checked it, but like, evoked for me.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah, that's what evoked for me.
Sam Claiborne
I had that running on my TV during the other show and yeah, it stood out to me. And I think you guys hit the nail right on the head. Here is what I'm excited about. In addition, obviously the cool racing is the in between stuff. I hope that there is secrets and collectibles. But what had me most excited, and I didn't know why I was thinking it, but just platforming in a racing game is super exciting to me. We saw a little snippet of that of you kind of jumping from wall to wall and getting higher and higher vertically, adding a level of verticality to a Mario Kart game. It feels like, wait, why didn't they do this earlier? This 100% makes sense. So I am hoping that there is some sort of platforming that happens in between the big races that allow you to achieve really cool and interesting heights and unlocks. You know, we see. What was it? A Lakitu that was sporting a cool hat. You see Luigi in a farmer's hat. Like, those have to be cosmetics that you find and collect and buy and things like that. So just all that stuff is, give me that. I want all of that.
Damon Hadfield
It seems almost obvious in hindsight because we talk about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe seemed like the perfect Mario Kart game. Absolutely perfect. How could Nintendo ever follow that up, improve upon it? But yeah, Forza Horizon, he has like. Oh, yeah. Well, that makes sense.
Sam Claiborne
Well, they just showed right there when they say free roam, one of the first shots you see is Mario driving by a POW Switch. So, like, that's interesting. That means that if you interact with stuff in the environment, things will change. Hmm.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah. It's a little bit of a gutsy move to make it a Switch 2 exclusive, considering this is the 8 Deluxe is the best selling Nintendo Switch game. They've already got 150 million square Nintendo Switch is out there. But they're really hedging their bets that this is the game that will convince people to put down $500.
Justin Davis
Especially given that Metroid prime is not a Switch 2 exclusive.
Damon Hadfield
Exactly. I mean, that's something that Sony was scared to do with the PlayStation 5 for years. They were scared to abandon the PS4.
Sam Claiborne
I mean, I think the software itself is going to justify. I don't think this can run on the original Nintendo Switch. And that makes me excited. I want them to. To take these big swings and say, yeah, we know we had one of the best selling consoles of all time. Now we're gonna try and do it again and we're gonna commit to that.
Damon Hadfield
But why is it $80?
Sam Claiborne
That's some economic. Hey, I'm a film major, not an economics major.
Damon Hadfield
Because games, after 20 years of games costing $60, they raised it to $70 a few years ago. Okay, so, okay, now games cost $70, but why is this $80?
Nick Limone
Why breach that?
Justin Davis
This feels bad on a couple of levels. Nintendo, what, this is only their second. Like, what, Zelda was their only $70 game.
Damon Hadfield
Tears of the Kingdom, Is that the only one? Yeah.
Justin Davis
So the timeline is video games were 60 bucks, but then when they went up to $70, Nintendo stayed $60. Their games were still $60. But then with Zelda, they're like, nah, it's so premium and so big that we're gonna go, we're gonna charge 70 for it. So now they're raising all their prices $10. It seems like Donkey Kong is gonna be 70 and Mario Kart is gonna be $80. So a, that already feels bad, but it doubly feels bad because you know that now PlayStation and Xbox, like, now that the band aid's been torn off, every game is gonna be $80 now for sure. Right? Like, there's no chance of that.
Nick Limone
Well, is this why they're. I don't know. Because. Is this why they're also throwing in our face constantly the shareability of games and the way to play them locally? And is this like a family move? Like, you just need to buy a Mario Kart once for you and your children, you know, like, as opposed to before you need to buy a bunch of copies of it. Like, I don't know. I just, like, feel. I'm not saying that that's justifying the price. I'm just saying, like, is that why they're trying to, like, sweeten it? It's confusing. Just sweeten it by giving me a cheaper version.
Justin Davis
It makes me sad.
Damon Hadfield
There's no world where Mario Kart 8 costs more than GTA 6, right?
Nick Limone
No.
Damon Hadfield
Right. So there it is. Like, GTA 6, at the least, is gonna cost $80.
Sam Claiborne
You think everyone at Rockstar is like, oh, thank God.
Damon Hadfield
I mean, yeah.
Justin Davis
Do we?
Nick Limone
Yeah, for sure.
Justin Davis
I think it's it like this game's open world structure. Like we've all shared how excited we are about it, but I do get equally excited about kind of the retro throwback tracks that are included. Like Mario Kart's always kind of two games, right. Like, they're like, here's our 16 or 24 new tracks and here's an equal number of kind of remastered and brought back old tracks. It's like, does this game just not have any sort of returning tracks? Like, we'll find out more in the.
Nick Limone
Well, and that raises the other question, what is the dlc?
Justin Davis
Because right.
Nick Limone
Became a platform and if it's not a platform anymore, that's insane. Right. I could also justify the price maybe like this is all in one. So they're like, well, we're not going to charge people $10 a month for the rest of their lives, so we're going to put it all in. But I suspect there's going to be expansions. And are those expansions as Jada predicted, in our next gen console? Watch. Like some kind of territories that are added to the, you know, as islands and stuff like that would be amazing.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah, yeah.
Sam Claiborne
Give me a thousand year door like world map and I'm there in a heartbeat.
Nick Limone
Yeah, just put the ocarina of time map right in there. You can drive around.
Sam Claiborne
Oh my gosh.
Damon Hadfield
Do you say data or data? Well, at my house we say data. And for the longest time I thought paying a fortune on a monthly data plan was just normal. That was until I found out about Mint Mobile and their premium wireless plans. That started just 15 bucks a month. Isn't that right, Seth?
Sam Claiborne
Okay, I was actually very skeptical about.
Damon Hadfield
Mint, I have to be honest. But I have been using it for actually forgotten how many months now.
Sam Claiborne
But whatever.
Damon Hadfield
I am a true believer. Now.
Justin Davis
Initially I was skeptical because as you.

Damon Hadfield
So naturally I just figured that with all the moose and bears and whatnot.
Justin Davis
A service like Mint was pretty much.
Sam Claiborne
Not going to serve my specific mountain man needs.
Damon Hadfield
However, I'm here to say I was pleasantly surprised. Yeah, I can say authoritatively, Mint is pretty rad.
Sam Claiborne
Actually, it turned me into a believer.
Damon Hadfield

Well, the rumors were that Mario Kart would be the launch game and then the follow up to Mario Odyssey would be the big fall game. That might still be the case, but that wasn't revealed at the direct. We did get a big 3D Donkey Kong game, I think the first one since Donkey Kong 64, Donkey Kong Bonanza.
Justin Davis
And Nintendo being Nintendo like I based off the art style and some of the some of the stuff that I'm seeing, I'm assuming that it's the Mario Odyssey team. It better not be just game but Nintendo. It's like, you know, cool game. Will you tell us who made it? No, we won't.
Damon Hadfield
They're always like that.
Justin Davis
Yeah, I know. And so like I think it looks.
Nick Limone
Too janky to be the Odyssey team and I know I could easily what the heck.
Damon Hadfield
Just for what we've seen here. I don't think it looks quite as good good as Mario Odyssey to my eye. But you know, we haven't seen that much.
Nick Limone
This is five. This is seven years later.
Sam Claiborne
This looks incredible.
Damon Hadfield
You guys are I want to play this but I I don't think it.
Sam Claiborne
Looks quite as good as this looks like a polished as hell product. I don't know what you guys are talking about.
Damon Hadfield
I'm excited for this. I've actually never played Donkey Kong 64.
Sam Claiborne
Ah, you're not missing my.
Nick Limone
I think the draw distance looks bad. I think the digging looks janky. Nothing looks good about this to me.
Justin Davis
Makes my heart hurt.
Sam Claiborne
I could not disagree more.
Justin Davis
Yeah, I think.
Nick Limone
Look how bad that looks. It looks.
Justin Davis
I feel like I'm being gaslit right now.
Nick Limone
I like the idea of digging around, but, like, it just looks bad.
Justin Davis
It's some of the most, like, incredible and evocative, beautiful 3D platforming with, like, smooth, fluid movement and terrain deformation. And the draw distance.
Nick Limone
I hope so.
Justin Davis
I think it looks, it's not what they're showing.
Sam Claiborne
And, like, every single movement and impact is like.
Justin Davis
Yeah.
Sam Claiborne
You can already tell this looks and feels good. Like, this feels good to play just by, just by watching the footage alone.
Nick Limone
First of all, no Donkey Kong game feels good to play. All right. They've never made one.
Damon Hadfield
False Donkey Kong 94.
Sam Claiborne
94 and Donkey Kong Jungle beat.
Nick Limone
Okay, who do you play as who do you play as in Donkey Kong 94?
Damon Hadfield
That's a good point. That's a good point.
Nick Limone
No game where you play as Donkey Kong feels good. They've, they've never solved that. And he feels like a big, sloppy, giant character. And, like, that's what he's supposed to feel like. But it doesn't feel like a precision platformer. And they always cram platformer, and it always is a bummer.
Damon Hadfield
The model is closer to the movie model.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah, it does love that.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah.
Nick Limone
Also, and towards, like, old Donkey Kong.
Sam Claiborne
I feel like I've never been more gaslit at work than this moment.
Damon Hadfield
I don't think it looks bad. I'm excited for it. Donkey Kong.
Justin Davis
I loved it. I, I, I'm so, I mean, I guess this is why we, why we podcast. Like, I' so surprised that, like, it's not unanimous that, like, that, that our hype levels are super high.
Sam Claiborne
Absolutely there.
Nick Limone
I think the environment, Superman, Krypton Fog. What's going on with this game? I don't understand.
Sam Claiborne
Did Donkey Kong do something to you, Sam?
Nick Limone
Yeah, it replaced Mario Odyssey 2. That's inexcusable. Inexcusable.
Damon Hadfield
I mean, it does make me wonder, like, what are the odds that Nintendo has two big 3D platformers in one year?
Justin Davis
Right.
Damon Hadfield
It makes me a little worried for Odyssey.
Justin Davis
I mean, low, like, when we, if we can reflect on like the Switch's first year. And granted the Switch came out in March, but the Switch's first year had Breath of the Wild, one of the greatest video games ever. And then later that year and then it had Mario Kart and then Mario Odyssey and then it had. And then it had Mario Odyssey in its first year. And so like the very rough equivalent for the Switch 2 is Mario Kart 9 and Donkey Kong. And then I would probably Metroid prime is before the end of the year. So like, like I think all three of those games look super fantastic. I'm very excited to buy them and play them all. But it's like that's. The Switch had such a, like it's tough to follow that first year for sure.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah. But I guess also Nintendo was in bad shape when they launched this. Right. Coming out of the Wii U, so they actually, they, they needed to have something to get people excited about it again. And it worked.
Justin Davis
Yeah.
Damon Hadfield
Um, okay. They confirmed the JoyCon's mouse function.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah.
Damon Hadfield
Now the game that they were using to show it off I don't think looked very impressive. That three on three basketball game. But for its other applications like Civ 7, I think it's gonna be awesome.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah. What is it? Drag Race or what was it?
Damon Hadfield
I don't remember the name of it.
Sam Claiborne
It's the new arms, basically. It looks worse than arms, but, but yeah, no, I think as we were watching it, Seth Macy had pointed out like, oh my gosh, finally I can play Civ 7 on my Nintendo Switch. And that's 100% what they showcase and touted. I think Tom Marks also really nailed like, I'm less excited about like the gimmicky stuff a la the sports game that they showed, but more excited about the PC style functionality that this is going to bridge the gap from PC to console. Now console players now have the opportunity to play something in a way that is evocative of PC, whether it be Borderlands 4, Civ 7 or Metroid Prime.
Damon Hadfield
Oh, that's. I mean I actually hadn't thought about its first person shooter functionality. I was thinking more of like I said 7, but they did announce Borderlands 4 is coming to switch 2. So I mean that's like a, that's cool that it's powerful enough to run a new AAA game that's not coming to PS4. Right. Or maybe it is coming to PS4.
Sam Claiborne
Because I believe it is on console that popular because it is on Nintendo Switch. But from what I hear, borderline not usable because a lack of mouse Functionality Interesting.
Damon Hadfield
Sam, you were sharing your thoughts on.
Justin Davis
Oh, go ahead, Sam.
Damon Hadfield
Well, you were, you've been sharing your thoughts on Civ 7 recently, which you played as your first Civ.
Nick Limone
Yeah, yeah, on Steam Deck. And I, you know, I played Steam Deck's version of Civ and my takeaway from this is that, you know, it was really difficult to play with controller based stuff, but that was because the UI was just not well done on Civ 7. Like, I know people play Civ games on their switch. Like Civ 6 came out for Switch, right? So like, you know, it's been fine with controllers. I think it's neat to think of this as like, yeah, on an airplane or a coffee table or whatever, it'll feel a little bit better. But I would say that like Switch 2 should probably run Civ 7 a lot better than the Steam Deck, just in general, just cause it's a more powerful system that can render this game better and it probably will include all these updates that have happened since launch and there should be more like this is a better way to play Civ 7 than the Steam Deck no matter what. Is it better than a PC? Like probably not, but maybe things just have it all set up that way. That's good for you. If that's how you want to play it. Yeah.
Damon Hadfield
Justin, did you have something to add?
Justin Davis
Yeah, just the only moment of this direct for me that had Nintendo, it had that feeling of like Nintendo showing you like a new, like oh man, I'd like never thought about that was like this little moment where they're showing off the mouse demo where they talk about how you can combine the mouse sensor with the gyroscope to like know like you keep the mouse stationary and if you're twisting your wrist like a thing on the screen can still turn and rotate. And I was just like, you know, I don't know, like that would kill our risks. That would give us all carpal tunnel if we were doing that every evening for months at a time. So it's like, I don't know how often that feature is going to get used, but it was just that tiny kind of light bulb moment of like showing me something I've never seen before and never thought about before, kind of combining these two inputs and like we just, you know, Nintendo's not the only company on earth that's doing that, but they're the company that's like the most able to kind of consistently deliver that feeling in those moments. And so I don't know, like I'm looking Forward to seeing if a game can take advantage. You know, getting gyro with mouse controls could be slick.
Nick Limone
Yeah, I think the Joy Con are still special little doodads. Like they're just, they're just interesting, you know, I'm happy that we get another system with them and all the things they bring with it, you know, and then Nintendo will inevitably fuse them to the sides and sell it for cheaper at some point. And then we don't get any of that fun stuff for the cheap version. But it's still cool.
Damon Hadfield
And like I don't, I don't like playing games with just like a Joy Con, but I see firsthand my 5 year old and his friends, they can just, it's so, it's just perfect for them. Like it's perfect for their hand size and they can just share them around and it's great. Works out well. And I like the magnetic abilities of the new Joy Cons too. Yeah, I think it looks slick, looks cool. I think that'll probably feel good.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah.
Damon Hadfield
To do.
Nick Limone
Right, right.
Damon Hadfield
In the Nintendo Direct, they spent a fair amount of time talking about a couple of features that are new to Nintendo but not new to gaming in general. They're calling it Game Chat, which is just voice chat, which is ironic. We have a whole Nintendo podcast, ironically called Nintendo Voice Chat, because when we started that, Nintendo did not offer that feature on the Wii. So there's Game Chat because there's a microphone on the actual Switch two now and a camera, a separate camera that sold separately for $50. And so on one hand I'm like, well, this is just another example of Nintendo being woefully behind the times because, you know, we've been chatting in games forever and we were taking, we're using the Xbox 360 camera to digitally put our face on our characters in Rainbow Six Vegas back in 2006. But on the other hand, I miss doing that and that's kind of fallen by the wayside and games aren't really using cameras anymore. And now when I think about playing games with my son and his picture maybe popping up in Mario Party Jamboree or Mario Kart, that sounds like a lot of fun. So maybe it'll be cool.
Nick Limone
Look, we all opened a laptop and sat in front of it and played Animal Crossing during, you know, the worst year ever. And I seen what Nintendo is trying to solve here, like Animal Crossing. It's great to tour the town, to be able to see your friends and not have to use a peripheral. We all have those peripherals now everybody has a phone, right? So it's like, this isn't difficult to accomplish, but it is neat that they're building this in. And then of course, they are doing it very safely by cutting around your face and not showing anything in the background. Like, all that stuff, it's all neat. Like, I also, like, worry that they know something we don't, that there might be another pandemic and they're predicting it or maybe even invoking it. Yeah, it's like, hey, okay, okay, we don't need, we don't know this much.
Justin Davis
Social distancing right now.
Sam Claiborne
Right.
Nick Limone
We can sit on a couch and play Mario Kart for a few years, can't we? We don't need this.
Justin Davis
I mean, I think the way that the kids play this is. This is a response to a couple things. Like, I've seen sort of a cynical take on like, you know, 10 years ago, Nintendo. I don't see it that way. Like, the way that kids engage with Fortnite is it's a hangout space after school. Right. And other games like that, like Roblox of like, they're on voice chat, they're in discord with their friends, and it's 30% about the video game and it's 70% about just like sitting around and goofing off with your friends because you're not sitting around in the same living room often anymore. And so, like, Nintendo seems to really kind of have clocked that. And like, that's the vibe that they seem to be going for with this feature and with this function. So that's, that's kind of Thing one and Thing two is like, it's another of Nintendo's strengths is like the marriage of like, hardware and software of like, the example that they showed in Mario Party of like, your character's faces moving around. Like, you can see your human responding in real time and it's moving around the game based off where your in game character is. And so, like, if games can take good advantage of, like, don't just make it like, you know, like a twitch stream of like, you're down in the bottom right corner and that's where your image lives. But, like, integrate that image and that camera into the game in a little bit more dynamic way, which is what they showed off today. To me, that's like a lot more interesting use of the technology.
Damon Hadfield
It is funny that this mysterious C button that everyone was interested in turned out to be the chat button. Yeah, yeah.
Sam Claiborne
I assumed it'd be some sort of social button.
Nick Limone
Yeah, it'd be nice if they like to use your phone camera.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah, that'd be cool.
Justin Davis
I can't believe that they showed off like the picture in picture seems to run at literally 10. 10 frames per second.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah.
Justin Davis
And I know.
Nick Limone
Did you see how it slowed down balloon. Balloon fight even.
Justin Davis
And so it's like, ooh, I don't know. I don't about that. But you know, it's true though.
Damon Hadfield
They're showing the truth, honest truth, warts and all. So we're gonna have Nintendo Switch 2 editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom at launch. I know there's some sort of. What's the extra functionality there? There's some sort of like a Notes feature where you can help other people find.
Nick Limone
There's hdr.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah, hdr, Higher frame rate, higher resolution and some sort of mobile device accessibility thing that shows you. Hey, you missed something over here, you silly boy.
Damon Hadfield
They're trying to. They're trying to.
Sam Claiborne
I think it's like a second screen. Experiences are bad.
Nick Limone
Two things. One is that it's a proximity helper to say like this is where our Korok Seed is and help you find it. Hopefully what it is is a checklist. That means that if you do have two Koroks left in your game that you have no idea where they are, you can use our map and you can go through and painstakingly figure out which one you are missing. Or. Or this can tell you that. That'd be nice, but I don't think they're going to go that far. We'll see.
Justin Davis
They announced it wasn't in the direct. They put up another video that's got 10 minute video on the Notes app and what it can do and it's buried in that video of like there's new VO from Zelda and Master Koga and there's new lore where like you can go around and find audio diaries and audio.
Sam Claiborne
Don't tell me that.
Justin Davis
Yeah, like in the depths using the Notes app, only the audio plays from your phone. I think like you can find all these audio logs that Master Koga left about like his journey around the depths and like you know how he reconstituted the Yiga class.
Nick Limone
Well, presumably this is an upgrade, right? And there is a free upgrade for people. So does that mean that you can use your Switch version and Switch save on Switch 2?
Justin Davis
Did they answer that in any way? The video answered that too. So it's not. It's free for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, but it's a paid upgrade for Everybody else, because it's only the Switch 2 version that has the notes functionality. And they did announce that you can transfer saves.
Nick Limone
Yay.
Justin Davis
Cool. I thought Nintendo knows what they're doing. Where all the B roll that they showed of Tears of the Kingdom was in the Lost woods, because that was the part of the game that Ms. Koi Thief ran.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah.
Justin Davis
You know, like, a slight choppy part. Yeah. And so, like, you know, they knew what they were doing. And, like, I eventually, like, Tears of the Kingdom was my favorite game of last gen. Like, I was absolutely obsessed with it and played it 60 hours, but I eventually put it down because it's like, I'm trying to build all this cool stuff and it's.
Nick Limone
Oh, you're so lucky to be able to finish it on stage two.
Justin Davis
That's what.
Damon Hadfield
I'm so pumped.
Justin Davis
And, like, it turned the game into such a slideshow, and I'm like, the game deserves better than this. I don't want to. Like, so, like, I'm just. I'm gonna spend all summer playing through Tears of the Kingdom again.
Sam Claiborne
See it. Seeing it running at 60 frames per second, like, makes me want to cry. It looks so good. Like, this is how. This is how it should have been. This is how it should have been.
Nick Limone
It looks great for most part. I mean, I. I have no complaints. I. I nearly 100 at this game. So I. I hope that what it's doing is going to dump it back in my hands and be like, you should finish this.
Sam Claiborne
Yes. You know, I mean, I'm going to replay them both. I don't care anymore.
Justin Davis
Again.
Sam Claiborne
Especially when you tell me there's new lore.
Damon Hadfield
Come on.
Sam Claiborne
What are you doing? Don't tell me.
Justin Davis
It's insane. I can't. It's like such a megaton bomb that they just, like, dropped in, like, minute seven of some random. Like, there it is. You can see it on the screen.
Nick Limone
So does Breath of the Wild have any of this stuff?
Sam Claiborne
Yeah, that. This is. This is Breath of the Wild right here. No. No, it's not. Sorry.
Nick Limone
I mean, the lore and stuff. This is tears.
Justin Davis
I don't know about that specifically. They'd. Also, there's an achievement system and metal system and stat tracking in the app of, like. It'll tell you how many treasure chests you've opened and how many of the goblins you've killed. And, like, and then it ranks you globally around the world. Like, it's. It's more. There's more to it than I thought there was.
Nick Limone
That's great.
Sam Claiborne
That's pretty exciting. Honestly, the fact that you said that there's a like a trophy slash achievement system via the mobile app has me raise an eyebrow in a way. I'm like, that's what people want, right?
Justin Davis
I know. It's weird. It's weird that it's like it's. It's shunted off into this thing instead of being just baked into the system.
Nick Limone
Plus, you can play Wind Waker now in a little square.
Justin Davis
Yeah. Wind Waker finally comes to the Switch. But it's not like, can we have the HD version? No.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah.
Nick Limone
You know what? They did look like they were running really well.
Sam Claiborne
It says that there's some visualization. It says there's visual enhancements for the GameCube games.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah.
Nick Limone
So it was noticeable.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah. They did confirm GameCube games are coming to Nintendo Switch Online and the launch ones are going to be Wind Waker F0GX and Soul Calibur 2. But what was this comment you said about playing in a little window? Window, Sam?
Nick Limone
Oh, it's just four by three. Because it's not the.
Damon Hadfield
It's not like a remaster. Yeah.
Sam Claiborne
Trying to go back to Wind Waker without the quality of life features introduced on the Wii U is going to sting.
Nick Limone
Speed Sail.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah, that's going to sting quite a bit. But that said, I kind of didn't like the bloom that was in the Wii U version. I know. Feel free to make fun of me for that, but I think it's a little too overly dramatic. But I'm excited regardless.
Damon Hadfield
Do you think this means there is no HD remaster of Wind Waker coming?
Sam Claiborne
I don't think that's the case. I think they can, you know, they'll double down and whenever they need a get out of jail free card, they'll be like, good news. Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD available in a week. And It'll cost you $80 skyward. Yeah.
Nick Limone
Like as a collection. And then for some reason it will only be available till March and then you'll be like, why March?
Justin Davis
Yeah. It's like, I love Nintendo and I love the Switch too, but the company just makes such strange decisions sometimes of like all anybody wants is just Wind Waker HD on the Switch. Like, no, only GameCube version.
Damon Hadfield
That soul Caliber looks pretty good.
Sam Claiborne
It does look. I mean, that's because it's a good game. One thing that did have me pretty excited though, apart from the launch titles of GameCube games, they're finally bringing like acknowledging GameCube games that people have been Wanting some version of to some extent back. So the stuff that caught my eye was Fire Emblem, Path of Radiance, which is an excellent GameCube game. Chibi Robo, Pokemon Coliseum, Pokemon Coliseum XD, Gale of Darkness, full on Pokemon RPGs that have just been lost and forgotten on the GameCube finally being playable on modern hardware. Which is super exciting.
Damon Hadfield
You just saying games that you hope come.
Sam Claiborne
No, no, no. They showed them in their little. Yeah, after the three games they showed like, like, like a little carousel. Yeah, this right here. Sunshine, Fire Emblem Path.
Damon Hadfield
Where is it?
Nick Limone
Computer enhanced.
Damon Hadfield
Where is it? Where is, where is Rogue Squadron?
Sam Claiborne
I did not see Rogue Squadron. Where the heck is it?
Nick Limone
But I said that I won't buy this system if they put Star Fox Adventures on it. And so far we're safe.
Damon Hadfield
Dinosaur Planet. Okay, so it's a new system, the Switch 2. All sorts of new functionality and things to explore. And if you'd like help figuring out finding your way around your Switch 2, you can pay for the privilege and buy the Nintendo Switch 2. Welcome Tour.
Sam Claiborne
Oh, dude, don't even get me started.
Nick Limone
Our staff, real time watching this was so fun. Everybody's like, this is stupid. This is pretty cool. Oh, there's secrets in there. I love this. Oh man, this will be really fun. And then all of a sudden just like. And it's a paid edition.
Justin Davis
What?
Nick Limone
Like this is the pack in. It could have been the pack in.
Damon Hadfield
It should have been the pack. It's not that different if you. It's not that different than if you had to pay extra for Astro's playroom.
Nick Limone
It's like it's AR games, remember? Like, it's just like you just put in something like this, put in a toy for people. It's so funny.
Sam Claiborne
When the Steam deck launched, Valve released the Aperture desk job. That basically was this one hour experience that was like, here's the coolest thing in the world for your Steam deck that only your Steam deck can do. This should have been that. So it's like, what are you doing? Why are you charging money for this?
Nick Limone
It's not even in the cart bundle.
Sam Claiborne
So silly. But who knows? Maybe silly, maybe there's something cool in there that they didn't touch on. But maybe, I don't know, like mini putt Golf is gonna justify a price.
Justin Davis
That was my assumption is that they made it look like, hey, it's a collection of tech Demos and like FAQs about your Switch too. And my assumption is that maybe those mini games have more meat and depth to them and it's actually a collection of like 12 or however many Wii Sports. Yeah, like Wii Sports esque, hopefully. But like even Wii Sports was packed.
Nick Limone
So is Nintendo Nintendo Land.
Justin Davis
Yeah, similar.
Sam Claiborne
It's like imagine when if your iPhone updates and then you get a notification that says do you. Would you like to tour the new update? What if they're like well that's going to cost you 999. Like what. What are you doing?
Nick Limone
Yeah, it's like would you like to unlock email on your phone?
Justin Davis
Don't give them any ideas.
Nick Limone
You're right.
Justin Davis
You're right.
Damon Hadfield
Okay. So yeah, here it is. Welcome to some other games that'll be there at launch. Split Fiction will be there.
Sam Claiborne
Makes sense.
Damon Hadfield
That's going to be awesome on the switch too. Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition, which I assume is going to include Phantom Liberty.
Sam Claiborne
Ultimate Edition includes Phantom Liberty. Yep.
Nick Limone
What world.
Damon Hadfield
Now the full Cyberpunk experience is available on a Nintendo handheld. It's awesome.
Justin Davis
Yeah.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah.
Nick Limone
We did it.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah, we did it. We have arrived. Capcom has a couple of games. Street Fighter 6 official years 1 and 2 edition. And then a Justin favorite Captain Path of the Goddess.
Sam Claiborne
Good game.
Justin Davis
Yeah. The game's still on Game pass. That game's rad. Street Fighter 6 has new Amiibo 3. New Amiibo that look really cool.
Damon Hadfield
Oh, so wait, I guess I missed this. Amiibo are still a thing on Switch two.
Sam Claiborne
Not.
Nick Limone
There's also new Zelda Amiibo.
Justin Davis
New Zelda Amiibo too.
Sam Claiborne
For the champions. They look awesome.
Nick Limone
Amiibo are still a thing.
Damon Hadfield
And Nintendo cracked down on those like fake Amiibo.
Sam Claiborne
Wait, what?
Damon Hadfield
Sellers from Amazon. So I don't. How so?
Nick Limone
You can't buy them anymore.
Damon Hadfield
They shut them down. And like they had to pay millions of dollars to Nintendo. Might have to find another way to get some help in tears of the Kingdom. Hogwarts Legacy is going to be their launch. Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster. Is that a nickel game?
Sam Claiborne
That is very much a Nick limone game. And one it is opening the floodgate now of three DS remasters for consoles. Maybe please.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah. Yakuza 0 director's cut. It's going to be there for Justin.
Sam Claiborne
I'm curious what the Director's Cut content is.
Justin Davis
That game is a million hours long. It's like I don't know if I have it in me to play it again. But like if you've never played it before, like then now is a great time to jump in.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah. Fortnite will be there fast. Fusion. I don't know what that is, but that's a launch game for the Switch 2.
Justin Davis
That's a F0 indie clone.
Damon Hadfield
Okay, got it. I think it's funny that World of Assassination is gonna be there only because Hitman 3 was available as a cloud streaming game for Switch and Sam played it and I played it, managed to enjoy it, even though it. It did not run very well. But now it's going to be available playable natively, so that's cool.
Sam Claiborne
I wasn't sure if it was a new addition for switch, but Agent 47 used a banana in a way that feels very Nintendo. I wasn't sure if that was a new addition or if a banana is available in the business.
Nick Limone
They do have some, like, costume stuff they're adding.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah.
Nick Limone
Nintendo themed.
Justin Davis
I don't remember a Hippo, Mario and Luigi themed assassination.
Damon Hadfield
Well, this. It's more than Hitman 3, right? It's World of Assassination.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah. It's like the collection slash roguelike capability or mode that they have.
Damon Hadfield
And then also here they mentioned that James Bond game, which has. It has been mentioned in years. I could not believe that this Nintendo Direct is where IO Interactive James Bond game got a mention after years of silence. I mean, cool.
Justin Davis
And Hollow Knight Siltson too.
Damon Hadfield
And Hollow Knight Siltslawn.
Sam Claiborne
Oh, my gosh.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah. And most importantly, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2s will be available.
Sam Claiborne
Very exciting.
Nick Limone
Is that a good one?
Damon Hadfield
All Puyo Puyo games are good, Tim. Not all Tetris games. Not all Tetris games are good, but all Puyo Puyo games are good.
Nick Limone
I get it. Yeah.
Damon Hadfield
I mean, that's about. That's. That's the Nintendo Switch too. How's everybody feeling about it now?
Justin Davis
What about the FromSoft game?
Damon Hadfield
Oh, yeah, you're right. You're right, you're right. Dusk Blood, right? That's what it's called.
Sam Claiborne
The Duskbloods.
Damon Hadfield
You talked about this in a video.
Nick Limone
The Duskbloods. It's like. It's like the Munsters.
Sam Claiborne
So, yeah, I think as we are doing this podcast, I have a little feature going out very soon, I'm hoping, but essentially I'm very curious to see what it is, but it is a PvPve from Soft Game. It is multiplayer focus. It's an.
Damon Hadfield
It didn't look like it in their.
Sam Claiborne
It did not look like it in the trailer.
Damon Hadfield
In fact, watching the trailer, I was like, looks single player. Looks single player. Okay, good. I'm on board.
Sam Claiborne
But nope, it's an eight player multiplayer game. I'm curious what that means. I'm curious what that looks like, but this is basically. I forgot to do my homework here. Copy my stuff. Just change some of the words a little bit. Since PlayStation and Sony own the Bloodborne name, they cannot use that name unless they get express permission.
Damon Hadfield
Is this the Bloodborne game?
Sam Claiborne
It is. I think it's very much set in a Yharnam esque universe. Like, come on, that is 100% yharnam. The main character looks like he's straight out of Cainhurst Castle from Bloodborne it. It's all wink, wink, nudge, nudge. In my opinion.
Justin Davis
And this is unlike Elden Ring Night Rain. This is the next game directed by Miyazaki.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah, that is correct.
Justin Davis
The Dark Souls and did the Elden Ring games. Like this is. I'm hesitant to say this out loud because I don't want to Like a company like Platinum Games seems to have like an A team and a B team. Right. And I don't know that FromSoft has that. They kind of just only make bangers. But like this is whatever the next sort of big main game from fromsoft.
Nick Limone
Is or is it not? Is it just both teams are working on stopgaps right now?
Justin Davis
I mean, maybe, but like this is from the director of Elden Ring. That's the important takeaway.
Sam Claiborne
I think this is Nintendo saying, please take us seriously. Look, we even have a game from Miyazaki.
Damon Hadfield
I mean, the fact that it's a Switch 2 exclusive is crazy.
Sam Claiborne
And it looks pretty cool. It looks weird. It looks just. It's Bloodborne 2 by another name. And you got a cool steampunk rocket jetpack guy.
Damon Hadfield
That's cool. Like they don't show anything that looks like multiplayer, which is.
Sam Claiborne
Well, I think that you see a little. You see a montage of different people. I'm assuming these are classes. You know, Elden Ring Night Rain has eight playable classes. I'm assuming that this little vignette that we get of all these unusual looking characters are one of several classes. The main one being this like vampire esque looking dude who I'm hoping heals through sucking blood because that sounds kind of sick.
Damon Hadfield
Why is from Poison Swamp.
Justin Davis
You got a weird frog.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah.
Sam Claiborne
You know that dude's gonna curse you and like have your health and then you'll be like, well, I don't know what to do now.
Justin Davis
I mean, what you do is you just lose.
Damon Hadfield
There's a.
Nick Limone
Like here's the multiplayer right here.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah, I guess so. Yeah. There's a crazy T. Rex coming up too. I don't know. Why is FromSoft so hot on multiplayer games right now?
Sam Claiborne
Well, I mean one thing that I do know is is that Miyazaki, apart from being obsessed with like Magic the Gathering, HP Lovecraft and all that nonsense, he's also into extraction shooters now like Escape from Tarov. So I'm thinking that like Elden Ring, Night Rain and this is something like tapping into what he is interested in in multiplayer games and extrapolating that into kind of his unique voice.
Justin Davis
I read.
Nick Limone
Pick one though, bro.
Justin Davis
Yeah, I can't remember if this was an op ed or a YouTube essay now but like somebody made a really interesting point that like the whole culture around souls likes of Prepare to Die and Get Good, all that stuff like Prepare to Die, that was a marketing tagline, right? That came from like the US marketing team. And like the actual ethos of the game is like no, get help from friends. Like you know, like you know someone. Someone in to help you or read the tips. Like they're, they're, they're. They're social. They're not meant to be these lonely solitary things. And so I don't have an opinion one way or the other. Like Damon, like you like I'm less interested in a multiplayer experience than in a single player adventure. But it does feel like kind of a continuation of like. No, like lock arms with your buddies and I'll go into this thing together and figure it out. That's always kind of been there even when you are playing single player.
Sam Claiborne
Oh yeah.
Damon Hadfield
It's also strange that they're getting this dust Blood because the fact that Borderlands 4 is coming to Switch, it just seems like Night Rain could run on switch two.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah.
Damon Hadfield
Why isn't night rain coming to switch two?
Sam Claiborne
I. Night ring comes out may like 29th or 30th.
Damon Hadfield
So maybe it will. Maybe it'll be announced at a later date. Anyway, the Switch to. I think it's very exciting. It's a little bit pricey but I've.
Sam Claiborne
Said it earlier today. It's been a minute since I've been excited about video game hardware and I think that Nintendo has single handedly won me over in terms of being excited about being excited for video games again. I feel like this breath of fresh air. I feel like the Switch launched all over again. Like I'm intrigued. I can't wait to get my hands on it. And it is my biggest criticism of the Nintendo Switch, which again I love dearly, is that it just feels like it became a baby's Toy very quickly in terms of power and capability. That was my biggest concern going into Switch two. They have answered that. And because they have answered that, that means I'm gonna have to pony up a little more money. But for me, you know, I am a hardcore enthusiast, so I will be paying that money day one because this is exactly what I wanted.
Justin Davis
Yeah, I agree. I mean, I think there were three or four years where the Switch was like my primary console and if there was a multi platform game and you know, I wanted to play Hollow Knight, like I'll get it on the Switch, I can play it on the Go, I can play it on my television. And then eventually, too quickly, the console started to feel old and creaky. And then I stopped playing all my multi platform games on the Switch. I started getting them on PC or whatever else. And so getting back to like, this is absolutely how I want to play Hades 2, this is absolutely how I want to play stuff that comes to different platforms. And so hopefully the console feels powerful enough to allow that feeling to last for several years. But I'm excited to get back to that vibe either way.
Damon Hadfield
Final thoughts. Sean?
Nick Limone
Re summarize my thoughts. Yeah, so we've been nitpicking a little bit and talking about things and breaking them down. I think this was the single best console reveal ever, ever done ever. It hands down the best console lineup reveal. The best like hardware looking hardware I'm most excited for. I've never been more excited by the sheer presentation of the direct. So they've done directs for years and ever since E3 kind of went away, we have to watch these all the time and they're usually like kind of stretched thin, watered down. Xbox has had some really good ones and Sony way back had really good ones and Nintendo's had some good ones. This was Nintendo's best and I think the best ever. And it's a weird thing to rate them on, right? Like just watching a stream about upcoming games and features of a system, like, that's just what I live for. And this was the best I've ever seen. So it's got that going for it. I think the launch itself looks absolutely fantastic. This year looks great. On top of all of the other things we just talked about, there's a Metroid and a Pokemon coming out that will play better on this new system. I mean, that's incredible. Like, it's just, it's an. It's going to be an incredible year. And the new stuff they showed I think looks amazing. And I will say one Final thing about the direct and about this console. For over a decade there's been two comments made about every single thing on every single stream everybody's ever had. Where's Bloodborne? Where's Silksong? Both were addressed in this. That is a cultural moment. I don't know if Nintendo is even aware. I don't know. Yeah, but. But they seem to have hit the nail on the head with those. And I. I can cannot think of a funnier situation for the thing that was on Xbox streams Silksong and the thing that was on Sony streams Bloodborne to show up both in Nintendo stream. That's unbelievable to me. And I could have never predicted it. And I'm so happy that we were just so surprised by that today. I'm not saying that like, oh, Nintendo wins. Like, I don't care about that. I'm saying like it was a funny surprise and it was great to watch. And seeing the fallout of that and the excitement in people has been awesome.
Damon Hadfield
What's the most expensive Nintendo console ever? However, I will also end things by sharing an anecdote that I shared on next gen console. Watch. I was watching the Nintendo direct with my 5 year old son who definitely plays the Switch a lot more than me these days. And halfway through he goes, daddy, we should just throw the Switch one in the trash, right? So maybe Nintendo's on.
Sam Claiborne
Maybe the headline of this video right.
Justin Davis
There, the kids are all right.
Damon Hadfield
Maybe Nintendo's gonna be.
Nick Limone
I just want to do a direct to camera here for a second.
Damon Hadfield
Okay, here we go. Here we go.
Nick Limone
Mark my words, Nintendo. If you don't put out a 3D Mario this year because you're putting out a 3D Donkey Kong, it's over between us.
Damon Hadfield
That's it. Don't. Okay. Don't come back to us, Gilbert.
Nick Limone
Don't cut my Mario.
Sam Claiborne
Or.
Damon Hadfield
Or do cut back to us, Gilbert. Yeah, that was good. There's something behind us. Do we want to fix this before we go into 20 questions?
Sam Claiborne
I mean, we got a label maker. I don't know. It's all good.
Damon Hadfield
The fancy label.
Sam Claiborne
It is a fancy label maker.
Nick Limone
It's feeling my wrath. My wrath has been felt.
Justin Davis
Do we. I don't know if you saw this, but Best Buy is doing a midnight. Like, if you pre order your console from BestBuy.com, you can go into your local Best Buy and pick it up at midnight on launch day.
Sam Claiborne
Oh my gosh.
Nick Limone
Isn't that fun?
Sam Claiborne
Yeah, it's back.
Nick Limone
It's been so long.
Justin Davis
Like how nostalgic Is that, like, I haven't made a decision on where I'm going to try to order the console from yet, but a, we all have to get to LA for IGN Live. So it's like, the timing for us, like, IGN staff specifically, is actually, like, a little bit tough and awkward because we're all going to be trying to, like, get our console in the mail and then immediately go to downtown LA for IGN Live. And so, like the idea, like, maybe I'll just go pick it up at midnight and then take off a company.
Sam Claiborne
Field trip to a Best Buy.
Justin Davis
I love those days. I think the last midnight launch I went to is the Wii.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah. Donkey Kong.
Nick Limone
Another fun thing is that June 5th is my birthday.
Sam Claiborne
Oh, hell yeah.
Justin Davis
That's awesome.
Nick Limone
What a treat to have the console launch that day.
Damon Hadfield
Okay, that brings us to video game 20 questions. And our suggestion this week comes from Tim from the Space coast of Florida. Tim says Omega Copy. This is easily my favorite redacted, but it could really trip up everyone because it's redacted. And with that.
Nick Limone
Oh, Space Coast. Ghost to Ghost.
Damon Hadfield
Let the questioning begin.
Sam Claiborne
Was it released this entry?
Damon Hadfield
No.
Sam Claiborne
Okay, last entry. 70s, 80s or 90s game.
Nick Limone
We won last week, by the way.
Damon Hadfield
Nice on question 20 is always fun.
Nick Limone
And we didn't get the name of the game.
Damon Hadfield
Just. It was Wave Race Blue storm.
Nick Limone
Wave Race 4. GameCube. That's what we got to.
Justin Davis
I would count that as a win.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah, it was a win.
Nick Limone
Damon counted it.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah, it was a win.
Justin Davis
Yeah. Look, words are just you putting an idea in somebody's brain. And if you say Wave race for the GameCube and they're picturing Wave Race Blue Storm, to me, that counts.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah.
Nick Limone
Did you know that name? Would you have gotten that one?
Justin Davis
Yeah, I probably would have gotten it. I mean, you know, like, there's a certain amount of, like, anytime we're playing 20 questions, I just black out and forget the name of, like, all kinds of stuff. So it's like, maybe it would have exited my brain, but like. Yeah, like the Blue Storm, like, yeah.
Nick Limone
That sounds a lot like Golden Sun.
Sam Claiborne
Hey, hold on. We got there.
Justin Davis
What. What it sounds like is a Mountain Dew flavor.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah.
Nick Limone
So it's from this century.
Sam Claiborne
No, last century.
Nick Limone
Last century. Oh, it's been a while.
Sam Claiborne
I mean, in honor of the season, come out. Oh, go ahead, Go ahead.
Justin Davis
You go.
Sam Claiborne
In honor of the season, is it available on a Nintendo console?
Damon Hadfield
Yes. Oh.
Justin Davis
Did it come out on the original nes?
Damon Hadfield
No.
Nick Limone
Was this ever an arcade game?
Damon Hadfield
No.
Sam Claiborne
Is this on the Super Nintendo no, that's fine. So it has to be N64, right? I get. Yeah.
Justin Davis
Or Game Boy.
Sam Claiborne
Our Game Boy. Shoot.
Justin Davis
Did it come out on the N64?
Damon Hadfield
Yes.
Sam Claiborne
Okay, one question, and we all know the N64 has like 10 games, so this should be pretty easy.
Nick Limone
Did Nintendo develop this game?
Damon Hadfield
I'm sorry?
Nick Limone
Did Nintendo develop or publish this game? I'm changing my question.
Justin Davis
No, I think it's Star Fox 64. I think that's why it's. I think the guy that wrote in, that's why it's confusing because it's his favorite game. But it might be confusing because it's the Nintendo 64 they didn't develop or publish.
Nick Limone
They published the retro, sorry, rare games. Right?
Sam Claiborne
Yeah.
Justin Davis
Yes.
Nick Limone
So maybe it's quest 64.
Justin Davis
Could be quest 64. Does this game have 64 in the title?
Damon Hadfield
Yes.
Justin Davis
I think maybe it really is Star Fox. Is it a. Is it a real time?
Nick Limone
No, no, it's not published by Nintendo.
Justin Davis
Star Fox isn't published by Nintendo.
Nick Limone
Why would Star Fox not be published?
Justin Davis
Wait, did I say Star Fox? I meant Starbucks.
Nick Limone
You've been saying Star Fox this whole time.
Sam Claiborne
You think Starcraft.
Justin Davis
OK, I meant. I meant Starcraft. I meant Starcraft 64. Is it. Is it a strategy game?
Damon Hadfield
No.
Justin Davis
That would have been hype. But it's got 64 in the title. But it's not. Okay, okay, okay. So it's developed and pub. Not developed and published by Nintendo, but it has 64 in the title. So there's also Mega Man 64 and it could be Quest 64.
Nick Limone
This is a Capcom game.
Damon Hadfield
No, that's 10.
Sam Claiborne
So it's not really narrowing this down to Quest 60. It's not Resident Evil, nor is it Mega Man Legends.
Nick Limone
Have we mentioned this game already?
Damon Hadfield
No.
Sam Claiborne
Is this game available on the PlayStation?
Damon Hadfield
What do you mean the PlayStation?
Sam Claiborne
Is it available on a PlayStation?
Justin Davis
I know what it is. Yeah, it's. It's Doom 64. I bet that's a fun one.
Nick Limone
But that wouldn't be on PlayStation. But we have to ask the question first.
Sam Claiborne
I didn't finish my question, so I will change it to Is this a first person shooter?
Damon Hadfield
Yes.
Sam Claiborne
Yes.
Justin Davis
Okay, okay, okay. But hold on, hold on. Because there's Turok 64. Yeah, there's Turok 64. I think.
Nick Limone
I don't think it's called that. I think it's called Turok the Dinosaur Hunter or something like that.
Justin Davis
Yeah, you're right. But there is. There was, I think a Duke Nukem 64.
Sam Claiborne
There was a Duke Nukem 64.
Justin Davis
And there was, you know what? So we know it's an FPS, like, because there was Ridge Racer 64. I'm trying to. I'm like, I'm going into my games.
Nick Limone
Does this game have Mars in it?
Damon Hadfield
Yes.
Nick Limone
Okay.
Sam Claiborne
Do you play as the Doom guy in this game?
Damon Hadfield
Yes.
Sam Claiborne
Is it doom 64?
Damon Hadfield
It is doom 64.
Nick Limone
He answered it for us.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah. Which, funny enough, is also available on The Switch in 2020. It was ported to modern platforms at the time.
Sam Claiborne
I've never played Doom 64, but I've heard nothing but good things about it, especially with the remaster.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah, we messed around with it in the old idea office. It was fun.
Nick Limone
Oh, yeah. We played a sequel, I think, in the Office, didn't we? Wasn't it like a doom 264 something.
Damon Hadfield
We played, was there?
Nick Limone
We played a Turok sequel. It looked really good, though. It's funny, though, because it's Doom, which is not a 3D game. Right. It's a fake 3D game. It's like a scaling sprites game. And then they make it look exactly like it in 3D, which is super confusing to me.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah, that's cool.
Justin Davis
It is. It is an interesting. Doom 64 was the first Doom that I played. And I didn't really know. I didn't appreciate. And it's like, oh, this is a fun game. And, like, now that I have the context of, like, you know, history, it's this weird kind of parallel universe. You said it exactly right. Like it's. It takes what used to be fake 3D and makes it real 3D. It makes it all really fast and really smooth. I mean, it's great. It's a good.
Nick Limone
You can look up, right?
Justin Davis
Yep.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah.
Damon Hadfield
Yeah, you can look up in this one.
Sam Claiborne
I think canonically, this also takes place immediately before doom 2016. Really? Yeah.
Damon Hadfield
Cool.
Nick Limone
That's so cool. So this is like the canonical Doom game before the contemporary series.
Justin Davis
I thought that this was like a. I thought it was like a. Like a semi remake, semi sequel to the original Doom. But maybe, maybe not. I thought it. Does it not remake part of the original Doom or all the levels I.
Sam Claiborne
Believe the levels are, but I think it's just technically a different story.
Justin Davis
Yeah, whatever.
Damon Hadfield
Tim from the video game from the space coast of Florida, his redactions were that it's easily his favorite in the series, but could really trip up everyone because it's made by Midway, not ID software.
Nick Limone
Oh, we didn't ask that question line. So I had ID on the tip of my tongue too. I was totally going to say, is this made by Ed? And you'd been like, nope. I'd be like, well, we're not getting this one. It's very lucky. And trying to trick us though, huh? That's what people are trying to do now. Trip us up.
Damon Hadfield
Yep. Trying to trip you up. It's funny, like, the Nintendo 64 is one of the only consoles that has a bunch of games with like the console name and represented in the title. Like Doom 6. Like there's no Doom PlayStation or Doom Xbox, right? Yeah, it's like this.
Justin Davis
It's very strange because, like, Doom 64 has now been ported. Like it's on Steam, it's on other platforms. Seeing a game with 64 in the title, it just feels like it should be. Like it should be illegal anyway. You could release a game, you could release a game with 64 in the title if you wanted. But it doesn't. Right?
Damon Hadfield
It's not right.
Nick Limone
I didn't know that this had been. I didn't know this had come to other systems. I thought maybe there was a handshake deal with Nintendo on it, but no.
Damon Hadfield
Well, it didn't come until 20 years later.
Sam Claiborne
Yeah.
Nick Limone
Yeah, but it's still called that. I mean, I agree with Justin. I think that's shocking.
Damon Hadfield
Cool.
Justin Davis
I. You know, someone should release a game for PS5. But the. In the title of the game it says for Switch.
Nick Limone
Well, can you put advance in a title just anytime you want?
Damon Hadfield
Yeah, you could.
Nick Limone
Really?
Justin Davis
There's no cops.
Damon Hadfield
On the ds.
Sam Claiborne
Your.
Damon Hadfield
The subtitle had to your. Dude.
Sam Claiborne
Double Strike. Dawn of Sorrow.
Damon Hadfield
Exactly.
Sam Claiborne
Deadly Silence.
Justin Davis
Yeah, you could just put a U.
Nick Limone
After anything you want.
Sam Claiborne
Zombie you, zombie you. Advance 64.
Justin Davis
They tried so hard to make the U a thing. It didn't. I know.
Nick Limone
Well, I'm looking forward to silksong you.

Game Scoop! Episode 805: Nintendo Switch 2 & Mario Kart Causing Sticker Shock
Released on April 3, 2025
Hosts: Damon Hatfield, Nick Limone, Sam Claiborne, Justin Davis
Produced by: IGN & Geek Media
In this eagerly anticipated episode of Game Scoop!, the IGN crew delves deep into the recent Nintendo Direct unveiling, focusing primarily on the much-awaited Nintendo Switch 2. Hosts Damon Hatfield, Nick Limone, Sam Claiborne, and Justin Davis navigate through the exciting announcements, game lineups, and notably, the controversial pricing that has sparked widespread discussion within the gaming community.
The episode kicks off shortly after the live broadcast of the Nintendo Direct, where the Switch 2 was officially revealed. Damon Hatfield (00:00) introduces the core topics:
"We've got the release date, we've got the launch lineup, and we've got the price, which is giving some people sticker shock."
Release Date & Launch Lineup:
"Obviously, we're recording this on Wednesday, just a couple hours after the Nintendo Direct that had the big reveal of the Switch 2. Still so much to dive into and discuss."
One of the most contentious points addressed is the Switch 2's pricing. The new console is priced at $450, representing a 50% increase over the original Switch's $300 base model (05:07). Damon expresses his mixed feelings:
"I do think it's a little bit more. ... $500 is quite is going to be a much harder sell for families than $300 was for the Nintendo Switch one."
Host Reactions:
Sam Claiborne (04:22):
"I guess it remains to be seen whether or not it's going to have parity with the PS5, but I think Nintendo seems to be kind of aiming it at as such."
Justin Davis (05:12):
"If I were to chart my excitement for the Switch 2, I came out of the direct super pumped. ... it's no wonder that PC and mobile gaming has been doing so well."
The pricing strategy extends to the games themselves, with Mario Kart set at $80 and accessories like Joy-Cons at $90 (05:07).
The flagship title, Mario Kart World, is highlighted as a system seller despite the high price point. Damon compares it to Forza Horizon, emphasizing its broad mainstream appeal (11:03).
Notable Features:
Hosts' Excitement:
"Just platforming in a racing game is super exciting to me. ... It's a 100% makes sense."
Marking a significant return, Donkey Kong Bonanza is introduced as the first major Donkey Kong title since Donkey Kong 64. While opinions are split on its graphical fidelity and gameplay mechanics, the excitement remains palpable.
Discussion Highlights:
Nintendo has introduced several new features aimed at enhancing the gaming experience on the Switch 2:
GameChat (32:00):
A built-in voice chat system integrated with the console's hardware, featuring a separate camera priced at $50.
Joy-Con Enhancements:
Magnetic abilities and additional functionalities like a built-in mouse sensor to allow for more versatile gameplay (27:36).
HDR and Frame Rate Improvements:
Support for 4K resolution and up to 120 FPS, positioning the Switch 2 as a formidable contender against other next-gen consoles (04:22).
The hosts engage in a robust discussion comparing the Switch 2's pricing and features to other gaming systems like the Steam Deck and upcoming PlayStation models.
Key Points:
Steam Deck Comparisons (07:24):
Switch 2 is positioned as a more affordable alternative to other handheld PCs, which often exceed $750.
Price Justification (07:24):
Nick Limone contextualizes the high price by comparing it to other tech gadgets like iPhones and TVs, though acknowledging the sticker shock it may cause (07:24).
An exciting addition to the Switch Online service includes the re-release of classic GameCube titles:
Wind Waker, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and Soul Calibur 2 are part of the initial lineup (40:14).
Enhanced Visuals:
These classic games receive graphical upgrades, including HDR and higher frame rates where applicable (39:37).
Beyond the core Switch 2 announcements, several notable games and features were revealed:
Hollow Knight Silksong:
Awaited eagerly by fans, promising enhanced multiplayer interactions (45:11).
James Bond Game by IO Interactive:
A long-rumored title finally gets a mention, sparking excitement within the community (47:22).
As the episode draws to a close, the hosts reflect on the overall impact of the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal:
Nick Limone (55:09):
"This was Nintendo's best and I think the best ever. ... It was a funny surprise and it was great to watch."
Anecdote:
Damon shares a heartfelt moment observing his five-year-old son's apprehension about the Switch upgrade (56:16):
"Halfway through he goes, daddy, we should just throw the Switch one in the trash, right?"
The hosts express a mix of excitement and concern over the high price point, yet agree on the Switch 2's potential to rejuvenate interest in Nintendo's gaming ecosystem.
