Damon
Oh, I like mine. Okay.
Justin
And Mark, I was told you had a special shirt.
Damon
Oh, yeah. I went lazy, So I went 90s sitcom with my costume. It's just a shirt that says this is my costume. It's a joke that's been made before. It's not funny and it's lazy. But I did it anyways. Cause you're like, you gotta be on Games Spook. And I'm like, I got a shirt.
Mark
But it's cool that it's monster letters.
Justin
Yeah, that's what makes it work. That's what makes it work for me.
Damon
The coolest part was that it was $6.
Mark
My shirt glows in the dark.
Justin
Cool.
Mark
It's from as a copyright that says Tempe, Arizona, 1990.
Stephen
All right, that's rad.
Justin
Well, I'm wearing a full body skeleton outfit, but I reserve the right to take it off during the show because it is starting to get very warm in here. Don't worry, I do have additional clothing underneath that's even more terrifying. We've got a great show for you this year. This is our annual Game Spook episode. We have a prompt from a listener asking for nay demanding to know our favorite spooky games on every console. Every console. So please look to my favorite spooky game on the Neo Geo Pocket Color and the wonderswan coming up soon.
Mark
But that's just Splatterhouse for both.
Justin
Well, spoilers. Jeez, now I have to edit that part out. But first, here be dragons. There are so many games continuing to come out. Can't keep up with them all. And there are two new dragon games that we've got in our hand and a game that might have a gun in it called the Dragon. Is there any gun in Call of Duty called a dragon? Something Mark, I wouldn't be surprised.
Stephen
Probably.
Damon
Why not? I'm sure there is.
Mark
I've played a lot of Call of Duty. There's definitely lots of fire.
Justin
Mm.
Damon
Mm.
Justin
But before we get to Call of Duty, let's start with Dragon the Veilguard, which it will be out by the time this episode is out. Got a 9 out of 10 from IGN. Both Sam and Mark have been playing it at least. Justin, have you played this one yet?
Stephen
I just got a copy this afternoon.
Justin
Okay, so you're gonna be jumping into that. I have only dabbled in any Dragon Age game. I played a little bit of either origins or two, I can't even remember, and then a little bit of Inquisition. But of course, Inquisition was our game of the year in 2014. I know Justin's a big fan. He's been singing his praises for a long time now. Let's begin with Sam. What do you think about Dragon the Veilguard?
Mark
So one of my favorite games of all time is Mass Effect 2. This really narrows Dragon Age to be a kind of Mass Effect 2. Like, in my opinion, you put together a squad, you pick who you want to smooch, and you have some kind of existential threat that you're working towards. And what you do in terms of building that squad and by talking to people and by doing their side quests results in changes in how the game's outcome works. So, like, if that strikes you as the most classic bioware thing ever. It is. It doesn't now, you know, it feels different gameplay wise and stuff like that, but that's at the core of this game. It is a. It's a decade old bioware, tried and true, offering.
Justin
More than a decade, right?
Mark
Yeah, I was guessing more than a decade. That's totally right. Yeah. I think that's really interesting. And it almost feels like a retro game. Not in its graphics, not in its performances, not in its gameplay even, but like, in that kind of like, oh, this could have been a genre, you know, and this is. This is kind of. It's like playing ukulele after playing. Not having played a banjo kazooie so long. It's like, oh, yes, this is a bioware game in the best way possible. Now, I think the world of Mass Effect 2, I've always understood, and I like the characters mainly in Mass Effect, and I like the races and the planets, and it just all comes together. I've never really liked Dragon Age for that. So don't take my Dragon Age fans. Don't be worried. My take on Dragon Age is Not bad because Dragon Age is bad. It's just like I don't really. I've played these games and I have no memory of any of it. And I read a lot of fantasy, I play a lot of fantasy games and experience fantasy TV and movies. Like I love that stuff. This, this universe doesn't work for me. Like, it's just, it's too much. It's just. I don't know. But this game, this game starts from like almost from scratch, so you don't need to know anything about it. Like even though the main antagonist is like a character in the last game that I played for 80 hours, I don't remember the character at all from that last game. So. And it didn't matter. So, you know, like you. It's really the person to person interactions that are interesting and so on. Now I'm going to say one more thing because I know I'm dominating this right now, but I have played there's. I've just been playing this game for six or eight hours. Nothing has stopped me. I've not had to like, you know, figure out anything or really want to talk about this with a bunch of co workers and like what, what's going to happen here? Like you really can just waltz through the game and that's not a bad thing or a good thing. I'm just pointing it out. You can go back to areas and then all of a sudden there are big open world areas like Final Fantasy 7, right, where there's just like this big area. You could do a bunch of crap in it. You could do side quests. There's treasure chests that are so difficult to figure out that our team is working really hard on mapping them and stuff. Is there any purpose to getting them? I mean, not for me. Every piece of equipment I've gotten, I've just equipped right away and then I just keep walking forward. It just doesn't. Nothing has any purpose. It felt like the end of Echoes of Wisdom where I'm like, well, I have, you know, essentially 100 hearts because I can revive myself so many times in 20 hearts and nothing can kill me or even take off more than one heart, you know, and so it's like, what am I doing here?
Stephen
But I have an important.
Mark
If you want to romance people and play a BioWare game that's really story centric and stuff, like, boy, did they do that here.
Stephen
But important question, do you have, Is there like a. Do you have a cool home base that you need to go back to? Oh, I'm so In. We're so back.
Mark
Bioware, baby. Well, let me just modify that. You have a lame home base.
Damon
Okay.
Mark
You have a home base, but it's like a castle that's floating in another dimension. It's not that. I know that sounds great, but it's very simple. It's like. It's where you keep your stuff. It's not the Normandy. Like, I think the Normandy was really charismatic in some ways. Like, I don't know why. It just felt cool. Like, you go talk to Joker in the cockpit and stuff like that. Like, it felt alive and it changed throughout and. But you still do the same stuff in this. You find everybody in their quarters. And also their quarters are cool because, like, you know, like, the witch lives in a witchy room that's hanging off the side of the castle. Like, there's neat stuff. Like, I'm making it sound vastly more interesting than it is, I think. What do you think, Mark?
Damon
Okay, well, for one, I think the lighthouse is cool. Cause you could decorate it. So that's fun.
Mark
That's cool.
Damon
Also, there are. With things you find in the world, it's. Yeah. There are times where you'll see, like, Sam is correct that there are, like, different chambers for each character. But sometimes you'll come back from a mission and Ballara will be next to Davrin, and you're like, whoa, what's going on? Like, you'll see her picture in Davrin's chambers. So then you'll run over there, and they'll have kind of a shared scene together. And so, like, that's good stuff. I think that stuff's really fun. One thing I'll correct, just to save you from the comments, you are not playing as the same antagonist from Inquisition.
Mark
I didn't say that. I said that the antagonist from Inquisition is in your party in Inquisition and this game, it is the antagonist.
Justin
Yeah.
Mark
Sorry, let me say it again. The person from your party is in this game as kind of the antagonist from the beginning.
Damon
Got it? Okay.
Mark
Is that right?
Damon
Yes. Correct.
Mark
Solus is in Dragon Age 3 in your party. In this game, he's an elven God that's making your day bad.
Damon
He sure is. Yeah. But. Okay, so my thoughts on the game is that I Love it. I'm 70 hours in. This is the first of two games we're about to talk about that. I have no idea what's going on because I didn't play the previous games. Call of Duty will be the next one. But for what this is, I like it a lot. If you're curious how it plays, think God of war 2018 Ragnarok. It's semi linear action focused combat with characters that you can command and tell them what to do. Just like Atreus. You could squeeze down L2 and push like R2 and Harding will shoot her bow, stuff like that. The combat feels very God of War and then it's like linear. You're going from area to area. You'll eventually encounter some sort of a puzzle and then you'll have to solve that puzzle. Yes. Your characters will also be like, hey, maybe it's this thing. And you're like, don't tell me. Come on, this is the game. But then what Sam is referring to is once you finish an area like its main quest, then it becomes an explorable area. And man, there is just so much to do again. 70 hours and I earlier today had to hit the go beyond point of no return button because I was like, I just have to romance this character for work. And it just like wasn't happening. And I was told it's because you got to go past the point of no return. And I was like, oh, but there's so many, like, question marks and so many, like, things to each side character has their own like, storyline that's not like part of the main story. Just they all have their own kind of issues and that kind of stuff is referenced as well. It'll be like, hey, we need to solve this problem. And it's like, but the team is distracted. They all have their own issues we gotta go through, so we should work on those as well. And so the game will kind of urge you to go and do their side stuff. But yeah, if you're looking for. I did play a little bit of Inquisition or I played a lot of Inquisition, but I don't remember it. It was like 10 years ago. This game is just. It's very, very actiony. Like it's almost. You'll play the first like five or so hours and you'll be like, where's the rpg? But it'll kind of make its way back in there. I'm playing as a rogue because that is the best class in the game and I love it a lot. It's also Halloween. I know by the time most of you will be playing it, Halloween will be over. But the game's got some pretty spooky vibes that I think people will like.
Stephen
Halloween always lives in our hearts though.
Justin
Yeah.
Stephen
I mean, I like one thing I liked about our review and that makes me excited to get into it. I'd be curious to get your take is that the game is just, you know, it really puts an emphasis on kind of like being a good time and letting you have a good time. And like, our review talked about that and some other ones did. And that's not to say I haven't played it yet. Like, I'm sure there's very, very sad moments and very intense moments. But, like, on balance, the game just being like, not so much of like, oh, this is a horrible bleak downer. But, like, it's just people are having a good time.
Mark
And, you know, what contributes to that is. And I haven't talked about this on the show yet, but this game feels a lot like the Guardians of the Galaxy game from a few years ago in that there's a lot of heisty missions and quipping happening while you're running along, and the characters have these personalities that are coming out in their passive dialogue. Now, that was a criticism early on because there's a lot of hastily written, maybe cliche type dialogue, but there's. There's plenty that's not like that. And it feels like, I mean, you'll be thrown into a thing. You're like, whoa, this. You. You. One of these characters could be Rocket and one of them. One could be Groot. And it's like it just felt the same way. And then put that on top of, like, commanding your party to attack and it being really actiony. It's like, it feels like that. So that's what lends it to. Lends to the kind of. The almost the light vibes of it. I mean, inquisition was not that, right? Inquisition. I mean, the word inquisition is like, oh, boy, this is going to get heavy, right? And, like, it just felt different, you know? And this is not that. And I don't. You can't do a mass effect this way, you know, like, what would you do, like, mass effects about, like, choosing genocide all the time? You know, it's like that was like half the dilemmas. That is like, you know, wipe out the Krogans. You can wipe out these spiders. You going to wipe out the enemies at the end of the game? Like, the whole game is about that, you know?
Stephen
Yeah, you wipe out the spider race, and then in the third game, you're like, oh, no, maybe that was not the right decision.
Mark
And this, like, I mean, they break the tension very, very deliberately. Like, you know, at one point there's a joke about, like, how one of the leads calls Solas, the main antagonist, chuckles and Then there's scenes in which he just calls him Chuckles over and over again and everybody just plays along. It's crazy.
Stephen
I'm into it.
Mark
It's tongue in cheek.
Damon
A couple other really big positives is when you play a game like this and you make your own character, sometimes you're could be a little bit worried that that character is kind of just like a blank slate. Kind of like you don't exist in the world. The world exists just for you to react to you. That's not true here. Rook is a really awesome character. I'll say her because mine's a girl, but she's awesome. She rules. And so she's one of my favorite characters. In graphics wise, it's gorgeous. I'm playing on PS5, which is tragic because my pro is a week out and I could be seeing this game so much prettier. But it's fine. I mean, yeah, well, I guess theoretically, we don't know yet for sure, but it runs great on PS5 and I'm sure it is the same for series X. And I hear it's really, really good on PC as well.
Mark
I think it's. One thing about Rook is that. And I don't like creating characters. I just don't. I like the auto rolls, stuff like that. That's fine for me usually, but as soon as I did that, I was like, I don't like how my character looks when they're speaking. It just looks bad. And so I went in, changed a bunch of mouth parameters and stuff. I was like, okay, this looks better now. You remember Andromeda had a lot of issues with speaking faces and stuff. And I was getting that for my default. And so then I went in. I mean, the character creator for people that are into that is really cool. It's just as good as any other one. And those have gotten really powerful. And as soon as you create your character and like how they look, just kind of standing and smiling, then as soon as you go into the game, you'll be like, no, no, this is all wrong. Because you see them do a bunch of things. So I thought that was funny. And then another thing that. Well, let me hold that one.
Damon
Yeah. You can change your character like basically from the start, right after the first mission. You can change how they. And also this game, you can go back any time. Yeah. And this game does something. I swear, every game just needs to do this. You can respec infinitely whenever you want. So if you put a point in your skill tree and you're like, I Didn't want to do that. You just click it again and it just goes away. Or you can push and hold the refund button and it'll refund them all. You can do that.
Mark
You can't change your class. Right. You can't change your class.
Damon
But because each class has subclasses, technically, you could change your subclass, though it's probably not recommended because most of the time, your gear is going to be tailored to whatever subclass you pick. So suddenly changing it would probably be weird, but you could.
Mark
Yeah, I wanted to let you finish that somewhere. But what I was going to say, though, is that Mark had pointed out that Rook is an interesting character. So Commander Shepard is an interesting character. You can design Commander Shepard in Mass Effect, and then, you know, there's like, an interesting character comes out of it. However, you play that character, because it is a person that has to deal with the whims of a team of different types of characters, and they have to show leadership. Now, how is that leadership shown? It's shown them by them being a jerk. Right. You can play that way, or them being a perv, which is always the bioware action that everybody likes to choose. Or you can be like, you know, this kind of, like, inspiring leader. Right. So there's all these different ways to lead this group, and that makes your character interesting. So in this game, I recommend if you want it to feel like Dragon Age, choose a British accent. And then if you want to feel like Mass Effect, just choose the American accent. And it's hilarious because the character just sounds like Commander Shepard the whole time.
Damon
My character is American.
Mark
Yeah.
Justin
Mark, why did you nominate this game for best save game functionality?
Damon
Oh, my God, it's so good. It's probably better than any game I've ever seen in my life. So there are 100 save slots that you can name. So that's amazing.
Mark
Already it pops up a keyboard. Now, first, what's the best way to skip that? I just hit A and then close it so all my save files just look like trash. I don't want to name it.
Damon
Yeah, you could just. So on PlayStation, it's you click save, and then you click square, and it just will name it Save15.
Mark
I think I've done that a few times, too.
Damon
Yeah, but your temptation is to just. If you're on Xbox, would be to push A twice. But then that's what opens up the renaming. So you got to get used to.
Mark
It or else you don't save. You cancel your save. So that part's not the Best part about it. But I don't want to take away from what Mark just said. Like there's cool stuff going on.
Damon
So there's a hundred save slots, there's like five auto saves trailing. But then any time a decision happens, happens, it will make a decision save. And then like I said, I got to the point of no return and so I made a point of no return save, did the point of no return. And then I look at my saves and it's like point of no return save. Like it made one for me. So it's just constantly making saves because there are some world altering decisions in the game and it'll just constantly be making saves and labeling them so you could be like, oh, you know, I didn't like that. And instead of digging through your auto saves, it's like boom, it's right there. So it's like you could theoretically have. And again, I'm 70 hours in. I think I've hard saved maybe 26 times. So like you could be saving every step of the way, naming them and just it's, it's the best save system I've ever seen. And then you can have three character slots, one for each class, each with their own individual saves.
Mark
This is just reminding me this was mentioned in the, in our review. But this is the best hair I've ever seen in a game. It is, it's pretty good believable no matter what you choose. And then you go and you play this game and like your character creator hair like works somehow. Like I don't even know, like it's like when water used to be impressive and each game like hair is getting better and better and it's just really, really cool.
Damon
Yeah, the animations are just, they're so good. It's like you like we're showing on screen but like she's wearing a cape and it just kind of like flows and looks natural. I'm playing as a rogue, so I'm very dodgy and my character will kind of just like jump and attack, attack with both swords and stuff. And it just, it always looks really cool. The animations are really, really cool in the game. I think people are going to like it. The only thing just for the 1% of commenters out there, is there any woke stuff in the game? Yeah, there's tons of it. So get over it or just don't play it. I'm at my wits end with that conversation. Yes, there is. Play it or don't.
Justin
Well, you've piqued my interest. I'll Try to check it out at some point. But there's another dragon game that just started playing last night and That's Dragon Quest 3 HD 2D remake.
Mark
Oh, you're playing that? Yeah.
Justin
What, what is that a positive or a negative?
Mark
I want to play so bad. Oh no, I can't wait to play it.
Justin
Yeah, I just fired that up last night. And the review embargo is not for a couple weeks, but we're allowed to share just, you know, first impressions. And my first impression is that it's yet another just absolutely gorgeous HD 2D game from Square Enix. And it totally reminded me that I would really like to get back to Octopath Traveler 2 because I never finished that one and I never played Dragon Warrior 3 when it was released here, so I don't have a direct comparison to it, but it does feel very. It feels like in many ways a classic NES era rpg. It opens up with a goddess asking me all sorts of personality questions and figure out my zodiac sign. Just like tactics Ogre would do. And I don't know how that affects the gameplay, but she knows that I'm an Aquarius now. Yeah. And you know, I just, you know, start off, it's very like Final Fantasy NES style. You know, leave your. Leave your hometown, go travel across the grasslands, in some forests and find another town. And then, oh, you gotta go to this tower and talk to the wizard that's living on top of the tower to get a key from him. Where's the thieves key? Blah, blah, blah. It seems like, it seems very well done so far and I'm excited to play more and I guess in two weeks I'll be able to share some more in depth impressions of that.
Mark
Excellent. Nice.
Justin
Do you ever play Dragon Quest, Dragon Warrior 3, Sam? Because you seem to know that it has a slow opening, which it does.
Mark
Yeah. Three. I can't remember.
Stephen
I don't know. Yeah, I don't know three very well either. I don't know three at all actually.
Justin
Yeah, well, I'll be able to.
Mark
I've played, I've played it. I just don't. I don't. The 2, 3, 4 melded my brain a lot. I don't know. I know one a lot more clearly.
Damon
Speaking of RPGs, just really quick. I played 12 hours of metaphor. I think it's great.
Mark
Yeah.
Justin
Controversial.
Damon
It's really good. Yeah, I know, right?
Justin
Everyone seems to agree Metaphor is great.
Stephen
I've been playing it too. I talked about it a little bit on the show last week. I get very, very Stressed out about the time management stuff. It reminds me of the older Pikmin games. I mean, really, any game with a system like that and metaphor is extremely generous with its time. Like, it's never been a problem. I've never gotten myself into trouble. Like, it's completely fine, but just mentally, like, I just feel like it's like, a weight on, like, every single action that I'm doing in the game that kind of, like, stresses me out and.
Damon
Like, do I need to refill my mana?
Mark
Yeah, that takes a day. Our late game guide writers are now at a point where they have to do a bunch of stuff. So they have to reload a save and just use these days to do it because they're just, like. They're completely out of days in the game. Like, oh, my God. That sounds exactly like what you're saying. So stressful.
Stephen
Yeah. But the game's fantastic. It. Well, I don't know. The stuff I want to get into is a little bit of a spoiler, so maybe I'll save it for a week or two.
Justin
Okay. Well, I do want to hear about Call of Duty Black Ops 6, which is, by all accounts, apparently the best Call of Duty has been in years.
Damon
Sure. I'll go first. Yeah, I think so. I think it's great. Yeah. So for work, I think, are we.
Justin
Talking about the campaign or the multiplayer or both?
Damon
I'm gonna start with the campaign. Okay. So for work, I had to kind of blast through the campaign, and I thought it was excellent. Every level is kind of, like, different on how you do stuff. It's a lot of stealth, some missions. This mission they're showing right now is really cool. It was a casino mission, and the way the mission's structured is kind of a stealth mission, but you have this of, like, five people, and it does this really cool, almost, like, Ocean's Eleven thing where it's like you start as one character, and then it's like, oh, I need to go. Like, he has to win a game of, like, blackjack or something like that. And then one of the other characters will walk by, and all of a sudden the camera will come out of that guy and go into that guy. And then it'll show like, you're now playing as that character. So then you're doing his part of the mission, and it just keeps switching where you go through all of them, and stuff like that is just so cool. You don't really see stuff like that in Call of Duty. And then there's a later mission that is, like, kind of you're on like a psychosis drug and the mission is insanely cool. But then in there is also these like open world missions where it's like you're just, you're in Iraq and you have a jeep that you can drive around and you'll, you'll, you can get in it and get out of it and your party will get, you know, kind of like an Uncharted 4. Those open areas where they'll be like, all right, we're getting in the jeep again. And they'll all just jump back in and you just like drive around. There's all these little points in the map and you can just like liberate all these different spots and then that'll affect the next part of the mission. Like how much equipment you have for that part. I thought the campaign was very good. It's short, just like every other Call of Duty, but it's very good. I've not played any multiplayer, but I've played a lot of zombies. Zombies is like, it feels like a complete return to form as far as zombies goes. It's just you start with a pistol and you just earning money and killing zombies. It's filled with Easter eggs. I think it's super fun. I am loving this game, but like I mentioned with Dragon Age, I haven't played any. Like, I think I played like the first Black Ops. So I don't know who Adler is. They're like, oh, it's Adler. I'm like, cool. I don't know that is. But I think it's self contained enough to enjoy it still. But yeah, I'm liking it a lot.
Mark
So surprisingly, I've played a bunch of this now too, and I think that it's more like the missions that I've enjoyed the most are more like a hitman game where there's all these different permutations and ways to infiltrate and you're pretending to be another character and you're doing spy cam stuff and marking targets and following them around. They completely made like a Mission Impossible or Bond game out of this. Like it is not this like kind of like. Well, it's funny to call it Call of Duty because it's like you're also like a extra governmental squad. Like you're not serving the Call of Duty. Like you're actively spurning it. It's completely crazy. And it's about like a secret spy cabal that's like interfering in all these politics and stuff and you go to like a James Bond villain base, basically that's behind A Bill Clinton like gathering at a mall. It's so nuts. Like it's, it's. And like it all makes it super fun. It's somebody, the team that's making this game seems to really like thinking about single player fun right now. You know, how can we just make this a really, really fun single player game that doesn't necessarily need any DNA of that kind of like, you know, we're a squad that's going to liberate this next World War II town. Like this has none of that DNA. You know.
Stephen
Damon, here's what we should do. I've played maybe a third of the Call of Duty campaigns, maybe half over the years. Let's go back and let's just play them all.
Justin
All of them?
Damon
Yeah.
Stephen
I mean we don't need to do 1, 2 or 3. Let's start with Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare on the Xbox 360 and let's just go back and play all the campaigns from there.
Justin
Who are you seeing? Me, like all of us.
Stephen
I don't know, whoever.
Justin
Scoop nation.
Damon
Like a book club.
Stephen
Yeah, yeah, you can all come along for the ride. It'll be a good time until, I mean until the middle years. Then it will not be a good time.
Mark
Do you think any are unavailable at this point?
Stephen
I mean, I don't know. Nobody knows.
Justin
Yeah, nobody knows.
Damon
I just replayed World War II and I liked it a bit. Black Ops 4 doesn't even have a campaign, so you won't be able to play that one.
Justin
Yeah, great.
Stephen
Well good, that's one down.
Justin
Knock that one off the list already. Well, the way you guys are describing this sounds interesting to me because I need more than just shooty shooty, pew pew in my first person shooters. I need more than just clear out this room, go to the next point, clear out that room, go to the next point, clear out that room. But it sounds like there is more to that to this game, so I should check it out.
Mark
Yeah.
Damon
People are going to say this is blasphemous, but it's one of the less shooty shooty Call of Duty's there has ever existed in my opinion. There's a lot of missions where you're not shooting anything or they give you.
Mark
The option to not shoot anything and then you get a reward or an achievement for that. It's cool.
Stephen
Did you just coin shooty shooty Call of Duty, by the way?
Justin
Oh yeah, I think so.
Damon
It's pretty good.
Justin
It's pretty good.
Damon
Yeah.
Justin

Seth
I am not going to lie. I was very pleased and very excited to find out Mint Mobile works even for me in the middle of nowhere Maine. I was honestly expecting to be shut out from all the fun of Mint Mobile, but it worked.
Justin
Awesome.
Seth
I loaded in my code and to test it out I just drove out. I'm not even lying, it sounds like I'm making this up. I just drove out into the woods of Maine to see how far I could go without losing coverage. And I am happy to say I did not have any coverage interruptions whatsoever that I would not have experienced with any of the other providers. That alone is enough to sell me because look, Maine is a big state. There's a lot of woods. Stephen King is here.
Damon
So it's haunted.
Seth
There's ghosts everywhere. And everyone knows that ghosts hate 5G. But I am happy to say I have literally no complaints. It's inexpensive, there's no contract, I don't have to have all these weird hidden fees. And you know, best of all, it works in spite of ghosts.

Mark
Remember, you can always Happy Halloween, listeners.
Justin
Reach us at the email address gamescoop.com, just like Carlos from the very appropriate Hershey, Pennsylvania did this weekend.
Damon
Nice.
Justin
Carlos says. Not sure if you've ever done one, but which are your favorite spooky games by console? If Sam can contribute the best spooky pinball machine, that will be even better.
Mark
It's Monster Bash.
Stephen
Yeah, I was just gonna say it's obviously Monster Bash.
Mark
Yeah. There's so many spooky ones are great Creature, Twilight Zone.
Stephen
There's two Elviras.
Mark
Oh, Scared Stiff is a really good one.
Stephen
Yeah, Scared Stiff is the better.
Mark
There's three Elvira's now. Stern just did one.
Justin
What?
Mark
Yeah, and Monster Bash just got reprinted so you'll see that one around. So you can play that one. But you know, there's a new Jaws game out, I suppose that's kind of spooky. It's really fun. Yeah. There's so many cool Monster Bash there. It is. It's about putting together a rock band of monsters.
Justin
Yes.
Stephen
Yeah.
Justin
Also, is this your favorite? Is this your favorite machine, Sam? Pinball machine.
Mark
I go around all over the place. Usually it's Lord of the Rings.
Justin
Okay, cool.
Mark
Or Indiana Jones. Or this.
Stephen
Mine's Medieval Mad.
Mark
Medieval Madness too. I love that game.
Justin
Well, we can probably start with nes unless anybody wants to like Champion Haunted. Haunted what? Haunted house on the 2600.
Damon
There was a spooky game on the Magnavox Odyssey as well. You like put an overlay on it and I think it was called something like that.
Justin
Yeah.
Mark
So clearly we're here to talk about Monster Squad. Right?
Stephen
I mean, the funny thing about NES games.
Damon
Sorry.
Mark
Monster Party.
Justin
Monster Party.
Stephen
All these NES games we played when we were six. So the game that really spooked us is probably like Gremlins. And there's some scary moment in it that lives in the brain of this whole generation of adults that were traumatized by something that we played on the nes.
Justin
This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of every horror game ever, but just our favorite on each console. So on nes, I would call it Shadowgate, which is not super a horror game. However, you are all by yourself exploring a spooky castle. And there are ghosts and wraiths and a werewolf. And I play it every spooky season. That's absolutely one of my favorites. And then I would have to shout out, I think Castlevania 3 is the best. Castlevania on NES 1 and 3.
Damon
I was literally going to say it's a two way tie between 1 and 3 for Castlevania. That was going to be my pick. Castlevania 1 is just so good because it's like, it's all the cliches, all the universal monsters.
Mark
It's like following the game. It's so funny.
Justin
Yeah.
Stephen
What is the difference between a ghost and a wraith?
Justin
That's a good question. For another time.
Stephen
Okay.
Mark
NES has like. Go ahead.
Justin
I was gonna say if you wanted to shout out Monster Party, you can.
Mark
Well, Monster Party is just goofy and also like Halloween in a box. Also, there's tons of licensed trash games that meet the Halloween criteria. There's a Freddy game. There's a Friday the 13th game. There's Alien and Predator. There's just. There's Toxic Avenger, Swamp Thing. There are Toxic Crusaders. On the nes, there's so many. And it's fun to just play a selection of those with friends over your candy of choice on Halloween. They're all very eminently laughable and funny to check out.
Justin
Yep. On the arcade, there's actually a handful that I love. In the arcade, Obviously, Splatter House is an arcade game. It would be ported to TurboGrafx 16, but it would be heavily censored. So I think the best way to play it is the arcade version. And then there's Night Slash Chiller. Well, I was gonna get there okay, but sure, Chiller. It's basically the 1980s arcade version of a snuff film. All you do, it's a light gun game where you just blast body parts and skin off of people that are trapped in torture devices, but with a very rudimentary pixel art style. So it's not that graphic. Actually, I tracked that down from a local mom and pop rental store for the NES when I was a kid.
Damon
Yeah.
Justin
This is Chiller.
Mark
It's a weird cartridge for NES too. It's a bootleg kind of light, light gray cartridge I played. I almost beat Chiller at the last California Extreme. And the arcade game is glorious.
Justin
Oh yeah.
Mark
It's so cool.
Damon
Steam, you're gonna make me throw up.
Justin
You're just an ectoplasmatic.
Damon
Yeah.
Justin
This is all the game is, Mark.
Mark
Yeah. Well, there's a strategy to, you know, there's little Easter eggs. Right. Like you gotta cut off that guy's head by shooting the guillotine, you know.
Damon
Why are they all Simpsons characters?
Mark
There it goes.
Damon
Yep.
Mark
Chop.
Damon
Jesus.
Justin
This guy knows what he's doing.
Mark
Don't let the rat eat it. You gotta shoot the rat, man.
Justin
Yep. Then there's also Night Slashers, which is a brawler with a Halloween theme that has very gory pixel art and it's a breeze to play through. It's available on Arcade Archives for Switch and PS4. This is a great game to play around Halloween. Like a lot of brawlers. Not much to it. You just play through it. You play through it to see the sights, but it's got lots of fun. Gory. I love how the enemies just sort of melt into bloody goo and stuff.
Mark
Robot arms. Yep.
Justin
And then finally, I would pick Alien Syndrome, which is a Sega game and is in many ways an alien knockoff where you have to rescue people that are slimed up against a wall just like they are in the Alien movies. But it has such a cool soundtrack and audio design that for a 1986 game, it actually has a very moody sort of sense of dread in the game.
Mark
So does Sinistar.
Justin
Sinistar does.
Damon
Ah, yeah.
Mark
That caused some nightmares to kids.
Justin
I think this is the master system version of Alien Syndrome that we're looking at here.
Mark
Yeah. Xenophobe is kind of like Alien Syndrome too. And that kind of creeping dread. I wanted to shout out Ghosts n Goblins.
Justin
I mean, of course, of course arcade.
Mark
Versions have all the tropes. They're hard to play. But you know, if you play them on a system with save states like the Super Nintendo Whatever Mini, it's pretty fun.
Justin
Yep. Fantastic music in all those. I was a little hard pressed to find Game Boy horror games. There are two Castlevania games on them, but one of them is bad and the other one is okay. Oh, we lost Mark.
Mark
That's right.
Damon
Oh no. What happened?
Justin
We have no signal on Mark.
Damon
Oh no.
Mark
You went. No signal.
Damon
Uh oh, my camera might be dead. That's not Good cursed show. Yeah, it really is.
Justin
It really is. GameSpook.
Damon
This is so scary.
Mark
Maybe the spider webs got in it.
Damon
Yeah, that's probably it.
Stephen
I don't know. It was a mistake making doing all those as practical effects. I. Damon have to go.
Justin
All right. Justin's gotta go, so you're gonna have to look. You're having a freeze frame like Sam did.
Stephen
If we were gonna stepping through all the spookies, I would say Resident Evil remake on the gamecube is the horror game that I like.
Justin
Ooh, that's a good one.
Mark
Justin, can Mark borrow your camera?
Justin
Yeah, yeah, just slide it over.
Stephen
Oh, that went the wrong direction. Oh, well, now it's safe.
Justin
Okay, well, you have to. You're going to be left with whatever face you're making when you turn off your camera when you sign off. So make a good one, I think. Okay, perfect. Perfect. Okay, this will be our technical difficulties screen while Mark sorts out his camera.
Mark
Do do do do do do do do do. What about Abadox? Is that a. Is that a Halloween game?
Justin
Yeah, well, it's like everything is like.
Mark
Body horror, gore and guts.
Justin
Yeah.
Mark
I thought of another one, a real one. Zombie Nation.
Justin
Yeah.
Mark
Do you think Nobody knows what that game is though, do you think?
Damon
Oh my God, what happened to Justin?
Justin
I think he saw a ghost. I think he watched the Ring video.
Damon
God, this is gonna be a nightmare episode for you to edit. That's the real game spook.
Justin
Mm. A fun fact on about a Game Boy game though. Even though it has a small horror library. In Super Mario Land 2, do you know there are goombas wearing a hockey mask with a knife in their head and they're called.
Mark
There's a whole haunted house level. It's great.
Justin
It's the pumpkin level. Right, Right.
Mark
Yeah. You go into a jackal land and.
Justin
Those gumas are called J Son.
Damon
Oh, that's funny.
Mark
Yeah, that is really cute. Well, I guess if you think about it, every Super Mario game after world has a ghost house in it, right? And those are spooky.
Justin
That's true.
Damon
Yeah.
Mark
Good one.
Justin
Thinking about Super Nintendo, would we anyone disagree that Super Castlevania 4 is the one?
Damon
Yeah, that's the one I would pick. There's a couple others. Those like zombies ate my neighbors and stuff like that. But I would pick Super Castlevania for it. That's my favorite Castlevania. That's a very good game.
Mark
There's also a very. We're already getting into the Doom era and that's a great, great horror game. And that's on Super Nintendo.
Damon
It is, it is.
Justin
Although I think there's.
Mark
It works pretty well on Super Nintendo.
Justin
I think there's another platform we should save a Doom game for. Coming up in just a bit. I want to shout out Demon's Crest on Super Nintendo. So you got.
Mark
Yeah. What is that game? Is that a Gargoyle related game?
Justin
Yeah.
Mark
Yes.
Justin
Yeah. Gargoyle's Quest also. It's. Yeah.
Mark
Okay. That was really.
Justin
And Then Gargoyle's Quest 2 is an NES game. But you're the same. We're playing the same guy. Firebrand.
Mark
Yeah. Okay.
Justin
Yeah. It's also related to the Ghosts n Goblins world. It's very, very great. Cool. Spooky visuals in Demon's Crest.
Mark
Nice. Yeah. This looks fun.
Justin
And then speaking of Castlevania on Sega Genesis, I'd have to go with Castlevania Bloodlines, which I like that Blood is in the title because it is a much bloodier game than the Castlevanias we got on the Nintendo platforms before.
Mark
Yeah, yeah. You know, both these systems too. Like I really associate Mortal Kombat with too. That is the horror fighting game. I mean it has the spike pits. It's got the. The blood and guts and I just think it's a great.
Damon
The ripping the faces off.
Justin
Yeah.
Mark
Yep.
Justin
I don't remember. I guess, I mean, definitely gore. I don't really think of it as a horror game, but.
Mark
It'S just like the spike pits and stuff. I mean, what else is it?
Justin
Yeah. Also on the Genesis they have a very cute game called Haunting starring Poltergeist, which is a very cute and clever game.
Mark
Oh, wow.
Justin
Where you're a punk kid who died in a skateboarding accident. Yeah.
Mark
Check that out.
Justin
And now you're haunting the family of the owner of the skateboarding company who cut corners with this product and cause you to die. And you have to. Wow you. You have to inhabit different objects in the house and scare them enough that they run out of the house. That's the whole point of the game. Oh, we lost Mark.
Mark
I mean this doesn't look.
Damon
Yeah, I'm here for the audio listeners only.
Mark
Now, Mark, your lights have gone off. Yeah, there's somebody in the room.
Damon
It's so scary. Yeah, it's Poltergeist.
Mark
Other games we've already already mentioned are on. Are on Genesis also.
Justin
Just the what now?
Mark
We've mentioned a bunch. A bunch of the games we've already mentioned are also on Genesis. Is Splatterhouse on Genesis or 2 and.
Justin
3 are on Genesis.
Mark
Oh, interesting. Okay, so. Never had the first one. Is that a Turbo Graphics exclusive?
Justin
Yep, it was, actually. What are we job. What are we doing about Mark and his camera?
Mark
Let's do one for the Sonic fans and. And put up a picture of Shadow the Hedgehog.
Damon
Yeah. That most represents me.
Justin
Okay. Well, apologies to our YouTube viewers. This is truly a cursed episode, which is perfect for games.
Mark
One at a time when we're losing them one at a time, they're being.
Justin
Picked off one by one. First with Justin. Mark. Mark is. No. His spirit is with us now.
Damon
Yeah, I'm just a ghost.
Mark
His corporeal form, one might say. The shadow of Mark still is here.
Damon
Yep.
Justin
Some sort of. He was taken by some sort of demon, but his spirit is still here. He's chosen to be represented on screen by Shadow the Hedgehog. I'm not exactly sure why, but that's what he's saying.
Mark
Because it's an honor of giving a very high score to Sonic X Shadow Generations, A game I have never played.
Damon
Nope. I'm very inflated.
Mark
We're honoring Sonic on this show to earn goodwill with Sonic fans.
Damon
I just want to be Keanu Reeves. That's all it is.
Justin
Well, I wish we would have put up a picture of Keanu Reeves. Anyway, this is what you're getting. YouTube. This is what you're getting this week. You get video of Sam and I, a still of Justin and Mark's voice. That's what we've got for you. Game spooked.
Damon
This year, things are dire at the IGN office.
Justin
We left off on Sega Genesis. When we get comes to TurboGrafx 16 again, I think the arcade version of Splatter House is better. So here I'll shout out Alien Crush and Devil's Crush, which are both pinball games. Yeah, those are good ones with horror themes. Both are very good. Alien Crush is a rip off of Alien in the xenomorph design. And this is Devil's Crush, which is more of an occult demonology theme. They're both really, really cool video pinball games. I recommend both.
Mark
Yep.
Justin
Mark wanted to talk about PlayStation. It's too bad there weren't any horror games released on PlayStation.
Damon
None at all. Yeah, no, PlayStation is where it, like, started to kill it. Right? So it's like you got Resident Evil, you have Silent Hill, you have Parasite Eve. Whole bunch of, like, spooky, spooky games. And obviously, like, the PlayStation one had, like, four, five Resident Evil games alone.
Justin
Well, three mainline ones. Right, right, three.
Damon
And then Survivor, so it might just be those four. But it's like, I mean, you don't really get more spooky than Resident Evil.
Mark
Yeah, yeah. And then you got Symphony of the.
Justin
Night, the best game on the platform.
Mark
And I guess Legacy of Kane is about vampires.
Justin
I'm so glad you mentioned that. I wanted to mention Legacy of Kane. That's the one you play as a vampire walking around drinking the blood of villagers and peasants. It's great. This is not Legacy of Cain. This is Soul Reaver we're looking at here. It fits the bill too. But it's not the original Legacy of Kain. That's fine.
Mark
It's a sequel.
Justin
Yep, that's a sequel. Which is getting remastered, I believe. Yeah, that was just announced. Now, when it comes to Nintendo 64, we talked about this recently. That has kind of a strained library.
Damon
It definitely has two not great Castlevania games.
Justin
It has not great Castlevania games. It has Majora's Mask, which is pretty spooky.
Mark
Mm.
Damon
Oh, yeah.
Mark
Masks are spooky. And they're from Halloween.
Damon
Oh, you know what other games kind of surprisingly spooky? Banjo Kazooie.
Mark
Well, that's what I was gonna bring up. Wonderful, wonderful Halloween themed level. And Banjo Kazooie. Such a great adaptation of the game's music. When you walk towards it in, you know, what's called Spiral Mountain or something. So funny. And then. Yeah, the Halloween area is great.
Damon
It's so. And the main villain is Gruntilda. Yeah, she's awesome.
Justin
Yeah. You got a witch as the main villain.
Damon
Yep.
Justin
That's a really. But the N64 is also the one, though. I thought we could throw at a doom bone with Doom 64.
Mark
Okay.
Damon
Oh, sure. Yeah.
Mark
Makes sense. Yeah. That's a great version of Doom.
Justin
Now, on the Sega Dreamcast, I think there are quite a few survival horror games, but I've only played Code Veronica and that was kind of the main Resident Evil that came to Dreamcast, so I would give that one Code Veronica.
Damon
Yeah.
Mark
Well, and things have exploded by now for horror games. So all the whole House of the Dead series. Right. And. And those are a big deal on Dreamcast and Typing of the Dead.
Damon
Yeah. Typing of the Dead. That's so funny.
Mark
It's a good one.
Damon
Oh, I remember Code Veronica. Your ponytail just kind of like stood straight up as she ran. It's so funny.
Justin
We might have just. What a great earthquake here.
Mark
Oh, my gosh.
Damon
What is this episode?
Justin
There was just a rumbling here. Joburg confirmed. Was that an earthquake? There's at least a big truck either it was an earthquake or a really big truck just drove by. Anyway, wow. Hopefully this episode actually gets finished and published.
Mark
If not, well, that's the curse. Remember, Tina hosted an entire Halloween episode that we did not have a single bit of. By the end of it, we didn't have the audio and we didn't have time. And we did a choose your own adventure or Goosebumps read in that one. It was great. It was a Goosebumps camp book for Goose Camp.
Justin
Cool. Now, on the PlayStation 2, I would say the thing, which was actually a sequel to John Carpenter's 1982 film and which is also being remastered, which I'm excited for.
Mark
Oh, yeah. What a great movie too.
Justin
Amazing. Mark, have you seen John Carpenter's the Thing?
Damon
I can't say that I have, no.
Justin
If you wanted to watch a spooky movie for Halloween, you could scarcely find a better horror film to watch.
Mark
It's so good. I watched my. I've been watching a couple of Halloween movies. The best one so far though is we revisited House, which is how.
Justin
Wait, house?
Mark
The 80s.
Justin
The campy one. You're talking about Japanese film?
Mark
Yeah, Japanese film.
Justin
Okay. I don't know that one. I know a campy 80s haunted house.
Mark
Damon.
Justin
It be called House.
Mark
I'm so happy. You haven't seen House. You have to see it. It's about a cat. It's about a bunch of girls infiltrating a haunted house. They each have like. And it's made by Toho. It is incredible special effects.
Justin
Wow.
Mark
Dude, the special effects are incredible. They're all like.
Justin
And it's from 19 painted. It's like 77.
Mark
Yeah. And it has like day glow, intentionally eye popping gore. And then also like backgrounds and stuff that like, look, they're like so coolly painted that it looks like a fantasy suddenly, but then it switches back to like these real. It's like one of the best movies I could possibly recommend to you and it's very watchable.
Justin
Where did you watch it? Where can I watch it?
Mark
Oh, it's just available on HBO right now.
Justin
Okay.
Mark
Or maybe Netflix, one of the two. It's one of the two main streaming services. You can look it up. And it just came in there because it's like, I think it has a Criterion collection. And you know, it's around. I have a giant original Hausu poster in my house. It's such good print. Like, it just looks so cool. Yeah. Like, look how cool this looks.
Justin
Cool.
Mark
His fingers are playing a piano.
Damon
Yeah, they are.
Mark
You kidding me? And I really think there's some game influence in this too. Like, you just. You will not believe how, like, recognizable stuff is once you watch. Like, oh, that's what this came. That's where this came from. It's crazy.
Justin
I don't know how this has alluded me me all these years, but that looks.
Mark
And the cat stuff is so cool. There's a cat ghost.
Justin
Cool.
Mark
And it's evil.
Justin
Oh, man. Spoilers. We gotta burn through some more consoles here. On Game boy Advance and DS, it's just all the Castlevanias. That's fine. And on GameCube, you get the Resident Evil 1 remake with Justin Shout it out. And of course, Resident Evil 4. And.
Mark
Right.
Justin
What's the third one that's trapped on game?
Mark
Eternal Darkness.
Justin
Eternal Darkness.
Damon
Oh, Eternal Darkness.
Justin
Yeah.
Mark
Another game takes place in Iraq. Oil fields. For some reason, during one part.
Damon
Couldn'T.
Justin
Come up with much for the OG Xbox. In terms of horror, those flood levels.
Mark
In Halo are pretty, right?
Damon
Yeah, certain Halo levels. Sure, sure, sure.
Justin
But Xbox360 and PS3, it's a whole other easy whole other situation. Dead Space 1 and 2, left 4, dead 1 and 2, Telltale's Walking Dead, and then Alamo Shock. Oh, yeah. Well, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Definitely spooky. Lots of spooky stuff.
Mark
My favorite on the system locked until this week to be playable on PC. Undead Nightmare.
Damon
Oh, that's right. That's right.
Justin
Really good point.
Damon
Well, and if you want to stretch, you could say, like, Demon Souls, Dark Souls. Those premiered on those consoles and they have kind of horror themes to them a little bit.
Mark
That's the PS3. That where those came in.
Damon
PS3, Xbox 360. PS3 is Demon Souls. Dark Souls came out for PS3 and Xbox 360.
Justin
Okay.
Damon
Yeah.
Justin
Still never play a Dark Souls game, but PS3 also had the Last of Us.
Damon
Oh, yeah? Yep. Man, it's so funny to think of that. That game came out on PS3.
Mark
I mean, I guess that's the Walking Dead era too. That game of the year. That's probably the only game of the year horror game, right?
Damon
Yeah.
Justin
Ooh, I don't know. What do you think? I'd have to look back.
Mark
Resident Evil 4.
Justin
Well, it didn't win Baldur's Gate 3.
Mark
Didn't win Resident Evil 4. You just got that.
Justin
Oh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I was thinking of the remake from last year. Oh, don't forget, the Wii has a couple light gun games in House of the Dead, Overkill and Dead Space Extraction.
Mark
Yeah, I think. Yes. Not amazing games.
Justin
We gave Dead space extraction an 8.5.
Damon
Wow.
Mark
But this does have a game that people really like, though. Maybe it's not on a Wii though, where you have a flashlight and you know, it's like a horror game with a flashlight.
Justin
I think that was Fatal Frame.
Mark
Yeah. But maybe that's just. It's not a Wii game, I don't think.
Justin
I think there was one for the Wii, but I don't know. Yeah, maybe much of a Splash.
Mark
Resident Evil 4, I loved that for Wii. I thought it was a really great version of Resident Evil 4.
Justin
Then when you get into the PS4, Xbox One generation and PC, then you've got all this overlap with stuff. So during that generation you had Resident Evil 7, the Resident Evil 2 remake, make indie games like Darkest Dungeon, Bloodstained, Cult of the Lamb, Demon's Tilt, which is a spiritual successor to Alien Crush and Demon's Crush, Devil's Crush. And then I'm going to shout out the 8 bit adventure anthology, which is the way to play Shadowgate today. I play it on PS4. I'm not sure if it's available on other platforms, but includes Shadowgate, Deja Vu and the Uninvited. It's the easiest way to play Shadowgate today.
Mark
What about the Manhunt series, Damon? We skipped over those. Did you ever play them?
Justin
I've just never played them. That's. That's all.
Mark
I haven't either. I. They're kind of chill or splatter housey.
Justin
From what I know. Early grind housy. I just. I've just never played them. I forgot though. I mentioned Bloodstained Curse of the Moon. I forgot about Blood Curse. Bloodstained Curse of the Moon one and two.
Damon
No. Yes. Well, and if. If we're going to give any sort of nod to Dark Souls and all that, then Bloodborne. Because bloodborne is like. Absolutely.
Mark
That's probably the most horror of them, right?
Damon
Yeah, definitely. 100% that.
Justin
I've just. I've still never played Blood. I'm waiting for them to do the remaster sometimes.
Damon
Well, I hope you don't die of old age before that happens.
Justin
And of course, on the most modern platforms we have Resident Evil Village, the Dead Space remake, and Alan Wake 2.
Damon
Alan Wake 2 probably takes it for me. What a great game.
Justin
That's everything. I wanted to. Shut up. Anything.
Mark
Yeah. I wish we could fill in the holes. There's. I mean, we're in a. We're in an amazing era of adaptations. If you like multiplayer horror? There's, like, killer clowns and, well, all.
Justin
Of those asymmetrical Friday the 13th got pulled. But there's. There was Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There was Predator hunting grounds.
Damon
Mm.
Justin
Wasn't there a Ghostbusters one? Did that come out? I don't even know. It's like, I kind of like some.
Mark
Of the Ghostbusters games. Remember the one from PS3 or whatever? It was like, not bad.
Damon
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Justin
Was that the one that had the. The voice cast from the original movie?
Mark
Yes, I believe so.
Justin
Anyway, those are some spooky picks from every console except. Sorry, we got to go back. Forgot the wonder swan.
Damon
Just kidding.
Justin
That brings us to video game 20 questions. And our suggestion this week comes from Jonathan in an undisclosed location. Jonathan says, longtime listener, thanks for doing the pod and the 20 questions. The trips down memory lane are great, and I love going through old gaming magazines. And with that, let the questioning begin.
Mark
Hold on, hold on. Do you think Dragon's Lair is a spooky game because you're in a haunted castle?
Stephen
Castle.
Justin
It's kind of like Shadowgate. He's. He's all you.
Damon
You turn into a skeleton when you die.
Justin
Yeah, that's 100%.
Mark
Yeah. Love that part. One of my favorite death sequences ever.
Justin
Yep.
Mark
So great. It's got tentacles, it's got witchy stuff. Yeah.
Justin
It's got it all. Let's call it right here Dragon's Lair.
Mark
Okay.
Justin
Spooky game.
Mark
Okay, so let's start with. Is this from the. The last century?
Justin
No.
Mark
The previous century mean.
Justin
No.
Damon
All right, is this game exclusive to any platforms?
Justin
Yes.
Mark
Oh, is it a Nintendo exclusive?
Justin
No.
Damon
All right, well, let's. Let's finish this out. Is it PlayStation exclusive?
Justin
Yes.
Damon
Hey. Okay, so we need to figure out which PlayStation of which it can be.
Mark
What three we've eliminated. Shooty shooty. Call of Duty's.
Damon
Yeah, that's a type.
Justin
Yeah.
Damon
Those are not exclusive. Is this game first party?
Justin
No, that's five.
Damon
Okay, we really need to figure out what console it is. So is this from an.
Mark
Is this on an even numbered PlayStation console?
Justin
Yes.
Damon
Okay. Okay, so it's on PS4. Let's see.
Mark
It could be PS2, right?
Damon
Yeah, yeah. PS2 came out in 2000. You're right.
Mark
Let's check that first.
Damon
Yeah.
Mark
Did this come out for PS2?
Justin
Yes.
Damon
Oh.
Mark
Ooh. That's gonna make it more fun and more interesting.
Damon
So let's see. Not first party, but exclusives. The Square Enix, obviously.
Mark
And there are so many exclusives. Actually, I Konami Ton.
Damon
Is this made by a Japanese developer?
Justin
Yes.
Damon
Yeah. All right.
Mark
Would you call this an rpg?
Justin
No.
Mark
Would you call this a spooky game?
Justin
Yes. That's five. I'm sorry, that's 10.
Mark
Seasonality for the win.
Justin
Seasonality.
Mark
Seasonality.
Justin
Said he wanted something spooky.
Damon
Let's see here. Okay, so PS2 exclusive. I mean, exclusive meant a lot less, but like a lot of things were exclusive.
Mark
Is it a Capcom game?
Justin
No.
Damon
So. No, because it wouldn't be like Metal Gear Solid. Those aren't spooky.
Mark
Would you call this game single? Well, everything was kind of single player back then.
Damon
Yeah.
Mark
I mean, there's the Konami Castlevanias.
Damon
Is this game part of a series that's still running today?
Justin
No.
Mark
Definitely could be a Castlevania. Yeah. Do you play as a human?
Justin
Yes.
Mark
Okay, because that eliminates.
Damon
Should we just ask if it's Konami?
Mark
It doesn't sound like it is, but yeah.
Damon
Jeez.
Mark
Is this based on a license?
Justin
No.
Mark
Interesting.
Damon
Well, and it wouldn't be Silent Hill because there was just a Silent Hill game released. And so I would consider that a remake though. Yeah, but I don't know. I think I would consider that.
Mark
Well, we can just ask if it's a survival horror game, right?
Damon
Sure, sure.
Mark
Is this Survive horry?
Justin
No, that's 15.
Mark
That's scary in itself. We've already reached the spooky number. 15.
Damon
Yeah.
Mark
I mean, it still could be one of those Castlevanias. We have no idea what the title is. And it could be.
Damon
Yeah, for PS2, man.
Mark
Yeah.
Damon
I can't even think of any Castlevanias for PS2.
Mark
I know. We would just have to guess like the name of a musical type and then some other term to pair with it. Yeah, they're called like, you know, like Harmony of Dissonance and stuff like that. You play as a human. Are there skeletons in this game?
Justin
Yes. Yes.
Mark
What? That sounds great. Is it a Castlevania game?
Justin
Yes.
Damon
Oh, but a PS2 Castlevania game, man.
Mark
Yeah, I think. Well, was the one I mentioned a PS2 game, to your knowledge, Mark? Harmony of Despair.
Damon
Oh, I know.
Mark
Something of Dissonance. Legacy of Dissonance. Is this the First Castlevania on PS2?
Justin
I don't know. Without looking up. I don't know.
Damon
All right, that's a free one then. Man.
Mark
I think they were a play on each other.
Damon
Cause those third person ones, that was PS3.
Mark
How many questions do we have?
Justin
Two questions and a guess.
Mark
All right, so just to make sure this is a 3D Castlevania.
Justin
That's one of your questions.
Damon
Wow.
Mark
Yes.
Justin
Yes.
Mark
Okay, so it's one of the 3D Castlevanias that we don't know the name of.
Damon
No.
Mark
Okay, so we just gotta put two. It is something of something. I swear. I swear it is.
Damon
Yeah.
Stephen
I swear.
Mark
It is a 3D not. Harmony of Dissonance. Isn't that one of them?
Damon
I really don't know.
Mark
It's not Legacy of Dark, but Legacy of dark. That's the suit 64.
Damon
Yeah. Well, and then what's the. What's the. There's like the PS3 ones. I forget what they're called, though.
Mark
Well, I don't even know if there's PS3 ones, Mark.
Damon
Yeah. Because it's like. It's like an action game, but it's like third person.
Mark
Yeah, but I forget what those. Well, yeah, we're not gonna get the name of this. Let me think. It's called, like. It's called like. I swear it's called something like something of despair or dissonance or something like that. How many questions? We have one question. And I guess.
Justin
Yeah.
Damon
We gotta just ask. Has Sam said the name?
Mark
I don't think I have. Have we mentioned the name of this game yet?
Justin
Not exactly.
Mark
Oh, no.
Justin
How can we do this in a fair way?
Mark
There's no way we've lost it just because we don't know the name of it. Why don't we not get. And then we'll have Justin next week and we'll say, Justin, what's the name of The Castlevania on PS2?
Justin
Oh, yeah. And then over the week, you're definitely not going to look up what for the castle.
Damon
Oh, I'm going to look it up the second this episode's over.
Mark
No, no. We can just lose this.
Damon
Yeah. I really don't know.
Mark
I think it's called.
Justin
There's another way that you can identify it by. It's the one where you fight this surprise final boss or something like that. That if you actually know the game, you just don't know.
Mark
Well, I tried to do that. Is it the first or the second? There's only two.
Damon
Curse of Dracula.
Justin
Yeah, but that's like a coin toss. That's not. You actually know which game you're like. You can't envision the game because you.
Mark
Didn'T answer my question. Then I would know. Then I'd be able to say it's the first game. This is the first Castlevania on PS2. That's what I was angling At.
Justin
Yeah, I don't know that this one's.
Mark
A draw because of that technicality. Okay. I played both these, and I remember in one of them, I believe you play as a vampire. That's what's a little bit confusing here.
Damon
But you play as a vampire.
Mark
I thought so. But maybe you just play as a Belmondo and. Yeah. I don't know. It sounds like there's skeletons, there's Dracula. I don't remember what the difference is.
Stephen
I don't know.
Mark
I think we don't guess. So I'm thinking it's the first Castlevania on PS2, but I don't know what it's called. It's 3D.
Damon
I don't know.
Mark
Should I move around?
Justin
Should I reveal? Mark, do you have a guess?
Damon
Yeah, I don't have a guess.
Mark
I think it's Castlevania.
Damon
Curse of Dracula.
Mark
No. Legacy of the Moon. Harmony of the Moon. Something. Harmony of Despair.
Justin
This one is.
Damon
You're just rolling dice.
Justin
This one is Castlevania. Lament of Innocence.
Damon
Nah, I would have never guessed that. I would have never, never guessed that.
Mark
A Harmony and lament and despair and dis. I knew it was a construction like that.
Damon
I have no idea what this is.
Justin
Going around 2003 and we gave this one a 9 out of 10. We liked this one a lot.
Mark
And you're a human in this, not a vampire.
Justin
Yeah. Oh, also, fun fact. This is chronologically the earliest game set in the entire Castlevania series.
Mark
Yeah, they say that so much.
Damon
Oh, funny.
Justin
Yeah.
Damon
Yeah. Every Assassin's Creed is like the first assassin.
Mark
You even surprised Justin with this one.
Damon
Yeah. So, okay, so we got PS2 exclusive. We got PS2 exclusive Castlevania game. That's. I mean, that's gotta be worth, like half a point.
Mark
Yeah. What's it called again?
Justin
I think there are two on PS2. The other one is Curse of Darkness, but I don't know which one came first without looking it up.
Mark
So, wait, what is this called again? It's called Lamentive.
Justin
Innocence.
Damon
Would have never got that.
Mark
What a bunch of bs. Great. Great pick. I like it. I like it.
Justin
Well, nicely attempt.
Mark
Did you play this, Damon?
Justin
I did not play this. I've never played a 3D Castlevania. Well, except for the remake.
Mark
I mean, this looks like Devil May Cry a little bit. Huh? Jumping in.
Justin
Yeah, it does look a lot like Devil May Cry, but with a lot of the item gathering from the 2D games. Yeah.
Mark
And look, it has kit combos, too.
Justin
Yeah. Yeah, it's supposed to be good.
Damon
I don't know.
Justin
Thank you for the suggestion, Jonathan. At least your suggestion is approved by Sam. No. No hard feelings.
Mark
Yeah, it's great. It was a great pick. I was hoping one of these would come up on 20 questions one day because I did play them, but I just don't have Memory of the Covers. Of them.
Justin
Memory of the COVID That was the third Castlevania.
Mark
Yeah. Memory of the COVID Viewers, if you're.
Justin
Still with us, thank you for sticking with us despite our technical difficulties this. This episode. The gremlins in the system, if you will. But this has been what's happening to Sam now. He's just being, like, sucked into a pool.
Mark
There's a horrible red goo coming down my screen and taking over.
Justin
It's not in focus, so we can't tell what it is, but maybe it's the Blob.
Mark
It's just a horrible blob of goo.
Justin
Definitely the Blob has.
Mark
What a terrible day.
Justin
It creeps.
Mark
Only an earthquake will dislodge this and.
Justin
Glides under the door.
Mark
Oh, yeah. I love that song.
Justin
