Title: The Apple of Her Eye Author: Pam Evans Narrator: Julie Maisey Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 45 mins Language: English Release date: 03-12-15 Publisher: Headline Digital Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: Pam Evans' family saga brings post-war London vividly to life as, amid rationing and food shortages, a young girl finds a passion for growing her own vegetables. It is February 1945 and April Green and her cousin Heather wonder if the war will ever end. Then the local pub in Chiswick takes a direct hit and April's father is killed in the blast. Life without him is hard to bear and April and her brother do all they can to help, particularly when their mother announces she is pregnant. Volunteering to tend her father's allotment, April discovers a passion for growing vegetables. Meanwhile, Winnie Benson is coming to terms with her husband's spinal injuries. He may never walk again and, until their son, George, returns from the Merchant Navy, Winnie must run their greengrocer's on her own. Once the war is over and George is home, things start to improve but rationing remains in force and fresh vegetables are hard to find. April's supply of home-grown produce couldn't be more welcome. And, before long, George can't help wishing he was the apple of her eye... Members Reviews: growing your own love..let April show you the joys Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why? The Apple of Her Eye written by Pam Evans is one read and listen I would happily recommend to a friend as from the first moment the audio started I was happily listening to April and her love for her family and the place she calls home. No matter what troubles land at her door her strength of character grows and her loyalty to those she loves is held stead-fast throughout. The narrater Julie Maisey is one fabulous narrator who through her soothing voice brings each character alive and as she changes her voice to match each of the characters I could not wait until I could listen to her soothing tones once again. Who was your favorite character and why? Without doubt April was my favourite character as for a young girl she really stands firm when her mother needs her, she holds her own corner when her dreadful spoiled cousin continues to manipulate her to do as she pleases. As a character her beauty not only shines through her facial features but she is a girl I would love to know as she is beautiful inside and out. No matter what troubles come to her she holds her head and her strength not only supports herself but her family will always be her priority. Which character as performed by Julie Maisey was your favourite? Julie Maisey is one fantastic narrator as immediately when she changed her tone I knew who she was narrating, she brought the story alive through her accents etc. I loved how she narrated George and his friend Johnny but throughout April was my favourite. I did like how she understood Heather as a character as her voice always had an extra edge to it which left in no doubt what sort of character she was. If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be? Hidden Strengths throughout... Any additional comments? addictive ..

Title: Cromwell's Blessing Author: Peter Ransley Narrator: Gordon Griffin Format: Unabridged Length: 12 hrs and 41 mins Language: English Release date: 02-26-15 Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: The price for a country. The price for a king. The price for a marriage. The second book in the Tom Neave Trilogy. It's 1647. The king has surrendered to Parliament. Lord Stonehouse, to show his loyalty to Parliament, has named Tom as his successor. But Lord Stonehouse's son, Richard, is also Tom's estranged father and a fervent royalist. If the king reaches a settlement with Parliament Richard will inherit... Parliament itself is deeply divided, with those demanding a strict Puritan regime pitted against more liberal independents like Cromwell. King Charles, under house arrest, tries to exploit the divisions between them. When Richard arrives from France with a commission from the queen to snatch the king from Parliamentary hands, he and Tom are set on a collision course. Caught between his love for his wife, Anne, and their young son and his loyalty to the new regime, Tom must struggle to save both his family and the estate. Cromwell's Blessing is the dramatic story of Tom Neave's fight for the principles he holds so dear - democracy, freedom and honour - and his young family, set against the backdrop of the violent conflict of the English Civil War. Critic Reviews: "Tom's search for his own identity is intimately connected with the seismic events tearing England apart in the 1640s. Ransley has a talent for melding dramatic historical detail with a strong story that could well give C. J. Sansom a run for his money." (Spectator) "A gripping coming-of-age story...an enthralling mystery adventure." (Radio Times) "There are some cracking [historical] writers out there. And Peter Ransley is certainly worthy of a place at the top...a great tale that would sit well on the screen.... Ransley conveys not only the action, but also the self-doubt and blundering of a poorly-trained army daring to challenge its king If [the] second book is as good as this one, then we are in for a real treat." (Eastern Daily Press) "An intelligent and imaginative tale of a pivotal year in English history." (Sunday Times)

Title: Plague Child Author: Peter Ransley Narrator: Gordon Griffin Format: Unabridged Length: 14 hrs and 42 mins Language: English Release date: 02-26-15 Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: The first installment of a page-turning trilogy set against the backdrop of the English Civil War. Royalist or radicalist? He is at the bottom of the social ladder yet soon finds himself within reach of a great estate - one he must give up to be with the girl he loves. Set against the fervent political climate of the period, Plague Child is a remarkable story of discovery, identity, and an England of the past. Members Reviews: Interesting Read A new series with interesting characters but a complicated plot. Rattled along at a good speed though and kept me interested. I will try the next book in the series. An enjoyable listen This is the first audible book that I've submitted a review for. Though, I do prefer tomes in book form, this was an enjoyable listen. With audiobooks, I find that the narrator is as important as the author. Plague Child, has a good plot (if a wee bit common one) and well narrated. When reading or listening to historical novels, I use google to check up on the non fictional characters. Especially ones I'm not too familiar with. In this case, Pym and Lady Carlisle. Who were in fact lovers. I like it when there are paintings also availabe, gives me a feel for the time and the person in the book. I look forward to reading the next two in the series

Critic Reviews: "Dark, dangerous, and totally enthralling, this latest edition to Callihan's Darkest London series treats fans to a heart-tugging, satisfying romance, fills in a few series blanks with well-handled flashbacks, and nicely sets the stage for stories that are sure to come." (Library Journal) Members Reviews: Brilliant! I have enjoyed these books immensely! The characters brought to life by Moirai Quirk who is a true wizard when changing voices and accents. The books are extremely well written with non of the long laborious narratives you get in some books when describing a place or indeed an item of clothing! Loved them. Amazing!!! Any additional comments? I really enjoyed this instalment in the series. I really liked getting to see in Poppy and Winston's heads and learn more about them. Poppy in the previous books seems so put together and Winston seems so proper, it was fun seeing under their veneers and learning their secrets. It was interesting learning more about the girls mother and who their father really was as well as about their brother. We also got to learn more about the SOS thanks to Poppy. I loved seeing their memories of how they first met and got together. I also love how it sets up for Jack Talent to have the next book. He intrigued me in Moon Glow and I was hoping he'd get a book as well! I really love this series and I'm glad it will continue past the sisters stories and into their circle of friends. Not as good as the first two - couldn't finish! Any additional comments? I loved the first two books and the world that the series creates, but I just could not bring myself to care for the main characters in this instalment and I became quickly bored. I'm about to skip to the fourth book!

Critic Reviews: "Callihan has a great talent for sexual tension and jaw-dropping plots that weave together brilliantly in the end." (Diana Gabaldon, New York Times bestselling author) Members Reviews: Brilliant! Any additional comments? I loved this book, it was a truly great follow-up to the first! It seems to be dealing with the sisters in reverse order, starting with the youngest and ending with the oldest! I'm really glad we got a look into Ian's head in this book. I wasn't sure on him in Firelight as he really did paint himself is a bad light trying to steal another man's wife, though at the same time showing concern towards Archer like he was conflicted and in this book we learn why he was so unset with Archer as well as learning more about him and his past! I found myself loving Ian as much as I loved Archer! I could see why they'd been such good friends before the incident with Victoria! Ian and Daisy were such a good match and I found myself intrigued with Talent, Ian's valet. I hope that when the sister's story's are told that prehaps the author will explore some of these secondary characters such as Talent. It was a great story and so sad at points. They both suffered in the past and had to deal with their pasts in the book in order to move forward. I was really glad to see a reconciliation (though more implied then actually truly shown!) between Archer and Ian. I wanted those two to reconcile! Also learnt a surprising secret about Poppy and the sisters in general setting Poppy up for the next book.
