Members Reviews: The Old West Revisited This book was an enjoyable read, The author managed to make the characters real without dwelling on details about them. It was easy to get caught up in the story. Having personally been in the parts of the country where this tale takes place, I found it even easier to get into the scenes because the writers descriptions didn't conflict with reality as happens with so many other authors I've read. The author managed to maintain the authenticity of the times and characters, something rare these days when so many authors tend to write characters based on the mentality and actions of people today. Many tend to fail to take into consideration a time when things were slower paced and social interactions more limited, this book reflects that time. The book is an easy and enjoyable read. I recommend it to anyone who likes western stories or stories of another time and place. A spellbinding novel of the old west. This my third book from Blair Howard involving these characters and I must admit I have grown quite fond of O'Sulivan and Coffin. This unlikely pair of heros complement each other and together make for a fascinating story. Set immediately after The Civil War in the Southern plains of Kansas, New Mexico and Southeastern Colorado as well as in the Colorado Mountains, O'Sulivan leads his cavalry command in pursuit of a renegade band of Comanches. The Comanche Chief proves to be a worthy opponent and surprisingly intelligent. Non-stop action, this gritty novel is a great read. Highly recommended!! Great book! Looking forward to #4 in the series! This is a great story of the life on the plains and the men who lived their lives 5here.it shows the brutality of not only the conflicts but also the environment. Book Good read, especially if you like Western U.S. History. Five Stars Great story. The action comes alive. Blair Howard doesn't write fast enough.

I knew very little about Josephine other than her connection to Napoleon before reading these books, I quickly became engrossed in her personal journey during very difficult times before, during and after the turmoil in France and Europe. I would highly recommend to read all three books to understand her as empress, mother, wife, friend, business woman and her stuggles with the role assigned to women during her lifetime. The trilogy is well written and though you pick up a lot of historical awareness of the time, it is an easy and engrossing read and history presented in a dry format. (Malmaison is definitely on our itinerary for France!) Great end to a great series Loooove this series! Gulland did not simmer out on the third book of the series. I couldn't wait to see how this series ended, but at the same time wanted it to go on forever. Her characters are so rich and complex and real. Her descriptions made me feel like I was right there in the action with the characters. I just loved the character of Josephine! I loved how it was written in diary entries that didn't feel like fake "dear diary" entries.

Members Reviews: Beautifully crafted tale of a fabulous woman and turbulent times Recommended to me by a girlfriend with impeccable reading taste, I was still, for some reason, somewhat reluctant to read this book. I knew very little (or cared â I am ashamed to admit) about Josephine or Napoleon (apart from ânot tonight, Josephineâ â I donât even know what the context for that is!) and felt there were too many other figures from history that I wanted to learn about and experience through fiction or non-fiction to invest in a three book series. Wellâ excuse me while I go and eat my words. From the moment I picked up this book, I was hooked. Written in the first person (itâs presented as though itâs Josephineâs diary), it commences when Josephine is 14-years-old and then called Rose, the daughter of slightly impoverished landed gentry on the island of Martinique. Of Creole heritage, Rose has dreams and these are fuelled when a fortune teller informs her she will be a queen one day. When her younger sister dies, Rose becomes a substitute bride and undergoes the long sea voyage to France to take up her position as a minor noblewoman as the wife of Alexandre de Beauharnais. But life as Alexandreâs wife is not what Rose expected and as she bears children and is given entrée into Parisian society, she also has a front seat to her husbandâs infidelities and indifference and the French Revolution â the latter which unfolds swiftly as the Terror descends. The Ancien Regime is collapsing, allegiances shift daily, and Rose has to find a means to protect her children, her greater family and friends, and above all herself. Beautifully written and impeccably researched, I couldnât put this book down. Gullard spent ten years researching this trilogy (of which this is the first book) and it shows, but not in a didactic way. Martinique and the customs and culture of the indigenous and their French colonisers, and their differences to their France-based counterparts is wonderfully realised. As we see, smell and are inculcated into the island culture, so too, through Josephineâs nave and fresh eyes, we see France and Paris. We enjoy the beauty, the sophistication, the fashion and habits, but also deplore the filth, poverty and later, blood and cruelty. Some events take place âoff-stageâ and those that donât are given the personal touch through being viewed and oft-times experienced by Josephine or a close friend.

I knew it would not be an easy or light story and it wasn't. I was deeply impressed with the author's attention to historic and cultural details and the depth of each character. This is a saga so there are so many characters with Amelie and Connor the central figures. All sides were represented in the cast of characters and I loved seeing it all. The story is mostly told from Amelie's perspective. She starts off naive yet impetuous and headstrong.

The entire series should be required reading in middle school for girls . Excellent series and a great book. well worth the read. Fascinating stories of women in the early 1900's. When I read the first book in this series - The Girl On The Mountain - I wasn't sure if I would like it. But then I got hooked on the characters. I could almost envision myself in that era. Each person in the book has their own unique story and I love how their lives all intertwined. So it was no surprise that I had to read the rest of the books, ending with The Women's War. Excellent reading. I would definitely recommend this book and the entire series. Just like potato chips, you can't just take one but you must have all! I purchased all 4 books in the series and proceeded to read them all. The only sad part is when the last book ended. These books are written in such a way that it makes you feel you are a part of the characters in each book. Carol Ervin, please keep the series alive going a few years from book 3, "The Women's War". And thank you for the great read! Another incredibly interesting & entertaining book Just getting ready to start book 5 in this series. Every book has such real life characters. Enjoyable reading. One more word required!!!!!!!!! Tough women This series is excellent. In this book, it shows the courage of the women and their determination to change their lives. I love this series.
