Title: Of Windmills and War Author: Diane Moody Narrator: Justine Eyre Format: Unabridged Length: 14 hrs and 2 mins Language: English Release date: 04-26-16 Publisher: Tantor Audio Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 96 votes Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: The rumblings of war in distant countries mattered little to Danny McClain. Growing up in Chicago, his world revolved around afterschool jobs, a rescued beagle, his pen pal in Holland, and the Cubs' chance to go to the World Series. Then, in December of 1941, news of the attack on Pearl Harbor hit much too close to home. In a few years, Danny found himself in the copilot seat of a B-17, stationed with the 390th Bomb Group in Framlingham, England. Anya Versteeg had been just a teenager when Hitler's troops invaded her homeland of Holland in May of 1940. Forced to grow up much too fast, the feisty preacher's daughter eagerly immersed herself in the Dutch Resistance. Certain that God had turned his back on Holland, she did whatever she had to do to save her country before it was too late. By 1945 the people of occupied Holland were starving. Thousands were dying every day. Then, just days before the war ended, help came to the Netherlands like manna from heaven. Operation Chowhound held special meaning for Lieutenant Danny McClain. Somewhere below, in the battered land of tulips and windmills, was the girl who needed rescuing, and he would move heaven and earth to find her. Members Reviews: I liked it a lot until the sap started to flow The first half was interesting. The second half was like a made for tv movie on the Christian channel. So sappy. A little light and fluffy for this era. I finished it but only because I paid for it. It was actually a bit like a war novel for ladies who lunch. Fabulous book This will always remain in my top ten books. The storyline & characters were superb. I have a long commute to work and bought the audio book - it was difficult to get out of the jeep once I reached the office and the same on the reverse trip. Only wish there was a book #2. Is it a machine? Would have loved to hear it but couldnt get past the worst narrators voice Ive ever heard Wonderful book and narration Excellent book. I felt the emotions of the characters and the story was very well done. I would recommend it to anyone that loves historical novels.

Title: This Rough Ocean Author: Ann Swinfen Narrator: Philip Battley Format: Unabridged Length: 23 hrs and 56 mins Language: English Release date: 01-18-18 Publisher: Ann Swinfen Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: It is December, 1648, and England faces one of the greatest crises in its history. Bands of renegade soldiers and broken men roam the countryside, looting, burning, and raping. In Parliament, former allies are torn apart after six years of bloody conflict. Will there be peace instead of war, or a military takeover of the country? John Swynfen, a rising young MP and one of the leaders of the moderate party, is working for peace, but only if safeguards can be established to protect Parliament and control the powers of the king. Ranged against him and his friends are Oliver Cromwell and his son-in-law Henry Ireton, intent on seizing power by the sword and destroying not only the monarchy but the elected government. Within a few weeks, London is occupied by Cromwell's army, parliamentary government is in ruins, the king is executed. And John Swynfen is a prisoner. Anne Swynfen travels home from Westminster to Staffordshire with her young children through a desperate winter. There, uncertain whether she will ever see her husband again, she takes charge of the large estate, where starvation looms due to bad harvests, and violent danger threatens from outlaws and the armies of both sides. While she struggles against prejudice to do a man's job, John is shot, beaten, shackled, humiliated, and tortured. Tempted by golden promises if he recants, threatened with death if he does not, he tries to cling to his sanity and his beliefs. When he finally escapes, he begins a terrible journey home across war-torn England to find his wife. This is a story about keeping faith - many kinds of faith - in the face of terror, anguish, and despair. Members Reviews: Epic Love Story. Beautifully written & narrated. An English Odysseus suffers the ordeals of imprisonment, torture, and wandering in frozen wilderness on his journey home. His Penelope, Ann Swinfen, suffers her own ordeals as she fights to preserve their family and estate. It took me a bit of time to enter into the story as I am not very familiar with the events of the period. Once I did the time flew and I listened every possible moment to this long and gripping tale. Highly recommended!

Title: Never Say Goodbye Subtitle: A True Story Author: Robert Gerard Anstey Narrator: Becky Boyd Format: Unabridged Length: 11 hrs and 26 mins Language: English Release date: 01-11-18 Publisher: Robert Anstey Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: The year is 1944, and World War 2 has raged on for five long years. Tens of thousands of allied soldiers are poised on the shores of the English Channel preparing to take back France from Hitler and the Nazis. This is the true story of average-Joe American soldiers. They came from the cities, and they came from the towns and the farms. They worked in factories and in fields, they drove trucks and they drove tractors. They were bankers and bakers and clerks and mechanics. Most of them were just boys, just the boy next door. The war made boys into men and men into heroes. Now just days before D-Day, four of these soldiers stand in the crossroads of history. These friends face their destiny ahead of them and must leave their hopes and dreams behind. Live the story through the eyes of the characters in this powerful and emotional audiobook that will pull you in and give you a connection to the past. Some stories are cut short by the horrors of war, and some amazing stories of life and love should have never happened. A brief moment in time can change everything, so you never said goodbye. These young men and women struggle to find the courage they never knew they had and the future they thought they'd never see. Members Reviews: Like plunging into an Olympic-sized swimming pool on a hot ... Like plunging into an Olympic-sized swimming pool on a hot day. Every page fairly glides by like a wave. Hilarious moments in every chapter and that formidable attention to human detail; that which is especially appreciated by a prior military member. It's everything a novel should be in that the focus is on human behavior, customs, habits, morals in the face of almost impossible odds. Everyone in the book is extremely affable and engaging, it is a story of good men and strong men --how they all coordinate with each other under pressure; what they think and feel about one another. You hate to have to stop turning pages--and when you return to the covers after a break, it is with anticipation. Loved it from the shockingly sad beginning to the happy fairy tale ending. A great little story about ordinary people caught up in a world war. This is a great account of a regular guy's experiences in WWII; not a general or a fighter pilot, just your average enlisted man. It's a great story about him and his friends making their way through training and going overseas and experiencing combat, and for some of them, meeting their future wives. The story is told by the main characters son and while it's apparent he's not that polished a writer he still does a fine job telling the story. It's interesting and funny and tense and at times heartbreaking. You'll find yourself really liking the characters and being concerned about what happens to them. We're losing more and more WWII vets everyday, soon there will be none left so it's important to tell their stories now, while some are still here to make sure we get them right. This book tells a great story about average people who were caught up in a huge war and did the best they could to survive it. Definitely worth reading. Beautifully Written What a journey this book takes you on. I never wanted it to end. It is truly a story about love, not of war. The story is touching, funny, and poignant. It is almost hard to believe it is a true story. This is a must read for anyone interested in U.S.

Title: The Girl from Munich Author: Tania Blanchard Narrator: Arianwen Parkes-Lockwood Format: Unabridged Length: 12 hrs and 48 mins Language: English Release date: 01-10-18 Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: A sweeping tale of love and loss in wartime Germany, inspired by a true story. Germany, 1943. The choices she makes will change her life forever. Growing up in Hitler's Germany, Charlotte von Klein has big dreams for the future. Her mind is full of plans for a sumptuous wedding to her childhood sweetheart, Heinrich, while working for the Luftwaffe, proudly giving her all for the Fatherland. But in 1943, the tide of the war is turning against Germany, and Lotte's life of privilege and comfort begins to collapse around her. As Hitler's Reich abandons Germany and the country falls to the Allied forces, Lotte is forced to flee from the unfolding chaos to the country with the darkly attractive Erich Drescher, her Luftwaffe superior. Amid the danger, pain and heartbreak of a country turning on itself, Lotte must forge a new life for herself. But as the country struggles to find its future, shadows of the past come rushing back, and Lotte finds herself questioning everything she has fought for - love, duty and freedom. Members Reviews: Liked the story about the effect of the war on ... Liked the story about the effect of the war on the German people did not like the excessive emotional description of how she felt it spoiled an otherwise good story Looking Forward to the Follow Up. The Girl From Munich is set in Germany during WW11 and post war. It shows the lives of the ordinary people as they too coped with the war that their "beloved" Fuhrer had led them into. Lotte was one young woman who believed in the cause and wanted to help where she could and escape the confines surrounding her from her mother and others. She is a keen photographer, however that has all to fall by the wayside as war sets limits on film. She is expected to marry Heinrich, a young doctor and life long friend. Although Lotte notices some things just don't sit right with her, even though she does have love for him. We follow Lotte through the last three years of the war, and in doing so see Germany coping with bombs being dropped on them, losing loved ones to the battlefield and not being able to find loved ones in other areas. Lotte like many believes what she has been indoctrinated with, until finally she realises what others might be saying could be true. So often we see the war from the eyes of the allied forces, so I really liked being given the chance to empathise with those also caught up in war on the other side. It also highlighted for me the unswerving and unthinking loyalty that some give to a leader, blinkered - and it is happening today, which is the sad thing, many have not learned from our past. This is a coming of age story for Lotte, a valuing of herself and a learning to trust her own heart and instincts. I liked her courage, fortitude and ability to keep going. Her relationship with Heinrich comes into question when she finds herself attracted to Erich, and it is this relationship that helps Lotte blossom into the person she becomes. This is a debut novel written by Tania Blanchard, she is an Australian with an Italian father and a German mother. She was fascinated by the stories her German grandmother told her, and for me that gives this book a ring of truth, an inheritance that she shares in a work of fiction.

Please note: This audiobook is in Spanish. Opiniones de los miembros: I learned here how relevant classical Athenian society is to us today. An excellent read. This historical novel provides an excellent picture of life in classical Greece, particularly Athens. There are lessons to be learned from Athenian democracy, particularly that it is only as good as is the political leadership. If you are not already familiar with Socrates, this is a good introduction to the man whose life's goal was to find the meaning of just. The philosophical inquiry is not delved into deeply. For that read the dialogues of Plato. I learned, from this novel, the motivations behind charges brought against Socrates, the subsequent repentance not long afterwards of Athenian society and the steps it took to then honor the man who represents a watershed in the history of philosophy. I particularly like the author's afterword (Note to my Readers) where he details the historical facts from the fictional. I read the original Spanish edition. It is available in English with the title Killing Socrates.

Title: Curse of the Spanish Gold Subtitle: The Mountain Men, Book 2 Author: Terry Grosz Narrator: Clay Lomakayu Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 50 mins Language: English Release date: 11-20-17 Publisher: Wolfpack Publishing Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 7 votes Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: In 1829, Jacob and Martin left Kentucky to become mountain men, trappers of the Rocky Mountains. The rugged mountains that lay beyond Americas frontier remained mostly unexplored. In those days, when beaver were plentiful and buffalo roamed freely, the killing was good. The two young men would also find that life would be hardscrabble in the high frontier. They would face grizzly bears and hostile Indians. And they would risk horse wrecks and mountain storms to trade their furs each year at the rendezvous. Curse of the Spanish Gold is the story of two adventurers who lived hard in the earliest days of the Wild West. Members Reviews: The curse of the Spanish gold and the first book crossed arrows are Five Star Stories in my book. It's hard to find a writer that knows the time period as well as this man. I have enjoyed reading his first two books and hope he writes many more. This man knows the country he's writing about and the time period. He also tells what it was really like during that period. His facts about the rendezvous and theâ everyday pitfalls that were waiting for the Trappers is quite true. It was a very tough life and you didn't live very long if you were stupid especially if you were stupid and unlucky. A big disappointment This is the second book in this series that I have read... I purchased another but do not intend to read it. . I do not enjoy all the blood and gore given in so much detail... the storyline gets lost in the repetitive details. The author may get paid by the number of words, but I read for the story. ANOTHER GOOD BOOK This second mountain men book was just as good as the first one. The amount of detailed information on daily life, including the food they ate was wonderful. I will be looking for more books in the series. Cursed Indeed The curse continues to destroy anyone in possession of the Spanish gold. Will the curse destroy both Jacob and Martin like it did their fathers? A very enjoyable book to read. It was hard to put down, once you got started reading. I recommend starting with Mountain man book 1 then reading book 2 . Both of them are really enjoyable to read.

First let me say that it good enoug but not coherent. The chapters all take on a different issue and is interesting in its own right. But there is no glue to the storie, i.e., like "Winter is Coming", get it? I don't mind. I feel like Im watching a TV series. Oh yea, I am. Here's the problem I bought the first volume in French, (my preferred language) in a bookstore in Paris. I wanted to read the subsequent volumes, and was happy to find that Amazon made them available for the Kindle. Here's the rub: volumes 1-6 and 8 are for sale in the US. Volume 9 is not. An oversight I am sure, but Please, Please, Please make volume 7 available (2 parts) in the US. PLEASE MAKE THE MISSING VOLUME AVAILABLE IN THE US! Thank you much A frustrated francophone
