Title: Rise of Mankind: Publisher's Pack, Books 1 & 2 Author: John Walker Narrator: James Patrick Cronin Format: Unabridged Length: 11 hrs and 12 mins Language: English Release date: 12-12-17 Publisher: Podium Publishing Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 20 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary Publisher's Summary: Behemoth, Book 1: Three years ago, Earth was attacked by an invading force so devastating, only one ship in the fleet survived. Their hard won victory came from the aid of an alliance of aliens long at war with an aggressive force. With the aid of advanced technology, humanity retrofitted their surviving vessel. The Behemoth became a shield against any future incursions. Now a strange ship has arrived, heading straight toward Earth. As it is not answering hails, the Behemoth heads out to intercept. The operation is interrupted by other visitors from beyond the solar system. Outnumbered the Behemoth must fend off the invaders once again - but this time, the stakes are much higher. Warfare, Book 2: Barely recovered from a battle against an alien incursion, the Behemoth waits to see how the alliance wishes to leverage their discovery, the weapon code named Protocol Seven. When two warships arrive from their allies with an offer difficult to refuse, they find themselves leant out to travel outside the solar system to a secret research facility across the galaxy. But what was promised to be a milk run turns into something completely different. With limited resources and a new commander on board their companion ship, they must stay alive. Combined with a potential threat from within, the odds are stacked high against them. Only their ingenuity and the perseverance of the human spirit may keep them alive. Members Reviews: Cue the Violins... A solid story line that was spoilt by too much introspection and unrealistic description of emotions via unbelievable dialogue. The author seemed to find wrapping the story up especially difficult. I found myself being pulled out of the story frequently by this jarring disconnect. James Patrick Cronin is an accomplished narrator but struggled to overcome this shortfall. Passed the time with a lot of wtf moments.

Title: Strange Music Subtitle: A Pip & Flinx Adventure Author: Alan Dean Foster Narrator: Stefan Rudnicki, Kevin Hearne Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 19 mins Language: English Release date: 11-07-17 Publisher: Random House Audio Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 23 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary Publisher's Summary: Unlikely duo Pip and Flinx return to right another wrong in this all-new sci-fi adventure from one of the genre's living legends. Empathic Flinx and his minidrag, Pip, have saved the universe more times than they can count, but the return of an old friend pulls the duo from their retirement and plunges them into a story of intrigue and imagination. The planet of Largess has recently opened itself to trade with the human-dominated Commonwealth. But when the daughter of a powerful chieftain goes missing, authorities believe a covert agent to be the cause. They need someone to track down the princess and roust the troublemaker and to do so without alerting the whole planet to their involvement. Can Pip and Flinx, perpetual fish out of water, save the day? Members Reviews: Nice to have another Pip-n-flinx adventure Nice to have a fresh story. I was kind of put off by the sing-song reading but Stefan Rubnicki did a good job of narrating it. Hope there will be more. Good Story Bad Narration I have never been disappointed by anything Mr Foster has written, until now. When a writer has to reference so many worlds and characters in the first chapter, I am insulated as a fan. Yes bring in the Commonwealth, but lets be subtle about it. But, it is a Flinx adventure, so there is that going for it. However, the narrator has way too low of a voice and as the title implies, there is a kind of music involved. Sing speech is an interesting idea, but someone should have thought it through. I also do not understand why after so many adventures Philip Linx would not see trouble coming. But alas, I will buy the next ten Flinx adventure books without a moment's thought. Please keep writing Mr Foster. How ruin a perfectly good audio book I love Alan Dean Foster and Stefan Rudnicki, but singing the dialog was just too much for me. I had to abandon the effort early into the book. This will probably be a book better read than listened to. OPERA! all Alan Dean Foster books are special and wonderful, the PIP and flinx stories especially so. this particular book is unique in that it has narrators Stefan Rudnicki and Kevin Hearne SINGING, I know, I couldn't believe it either. it's a great book and not bad singing either.!

Title: The Forever Ship Author: Francesca Haig Narrator: Lauren Fortgang Format: Unabridged Length: 12 hrs and 58 mins Language: English Release date: 10-17-17 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 29 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary Publisher's Summary: Book Three in the critically acclaimed The Fire Sermon trilogy - The Hunger Games meets Cormac McCarthy's The Road in this richly imagined postapocalyptic series by award-winning poet Francesca Haig. Critic Reviews: "Haig's prose is gorgeous and engaging, particularly when she describes the desolate landscape, now peppered with ruins from the Before. Fans of dystopias will appreciate this adventure-filled yet character-focused tale that offers hope and explores (in a refreshingly nuanced way) the moral complexities involved in defeating an oppressive and backward government structure." (Booklist). Members Reviews: Good, but not as good. I liked the series, but would have enjoyed a different ending. Destopian futures can be better when the good guys win.

Members Reviews: It was okay. it was a bit plodding and the descriptions were repetitive. The story was overall good but it failed to captivate. the red thirst was really underplayed. give it time to build Good book as it's the only one to feature the angels heavily but does take a rather long time to get going

Title: Red Horizon Subtitle: Discovery Series, Book 2 Author: Salvador Mercer Narrator: Mark Boyett Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 20 mins Language: English Release date: 10-03-17 Publisher: Podium Publishing Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 91 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary Publisher's Summary: The truth of discovery is on mankind's horizon, a Red Horizon. For nearly four long years, the world's superpowers have mobilized their people and resources in preparation for the next discovery, Mars. The race against one another pales in comparison to the inherent dangers of travelling through the vastness of the cosmos, going where mankind has never gone before. Facing the hostile and challenging environment of space, and nations ready to do anything it takes to win, Richard, 'Rock' Crandon pulls his team together in an attempt to reach the alien technology on the red planet first, and discover the intent behind the alien species. Will mankind tear itself apart in the name of discovery, or will the truth reveal something more sinister, the true intent of the aliens? Members Reviews: Virtually the same story Any additional comments? This is virtually the same story as Lunar Discovery. Except this time US, USSR 2.0 and China race to Mars instead of moon. The biggest disappointment about the "Discovery" series is that there is so little about the "Discovery". Not very imaginative for a science fiction writer. A plot twist No one saw coming. I wish this book was longer so that I could keep listening to this story. Yet another story about humans killing humans Yes, this is a tale about human tribal warfare with all the usual knife twists and bombs, A mini WW1 with separate human "tribes" claiming "if we can't have it exclusively -no one will get it-" Good narrator but the story is very shallow and un-imaginative as SCI-fi I enjoyed this book as I did book number 1 I read book one. I felt it was well written. I enjoyed the story but I felt that the writer should have covered more of the story. This story should be covered by 3 books! The writer is too verbose. Writing too much about what ever. Red Horizon was written the same way and in my opinion the next installment should be able to finish the story. If it does not, I will not buy the next. Writers who use this method of stretching a story need to write books that are 15 plus hours. Salvador Mercer. This story is not worth more then 3 credits!! great story, great narration. the story is well written and keeps you in the edge of your seat, finished with a cliff hanger so bring on the next chapter. Mark Boyett is flawless as always.

Title: Vengeful Spirit Subtitle: The Horus Heresy, Book 29 Author: Graham McNeill Narrator: Gareth Armstrong Format: Unabridged Length: 15 hrs and 10 mins Language: English Release date: 10-03-17 Publisher: Black Library Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 8 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary Publisher's Summary: Once the brightest star in the Imperium and always first among his primarch brothers, Horus has dragged the Space Marine Legions into the bloodiest conflict that the galaxy has ever seen. While their allies wage war on a thousand different fronts, the XVIth Legion descend upon the Knight world of Molech - home to the ruling House Devine, and a principle stronghold of the Imperial Army. The forces loyal to the Emperor stand ready to defy the Warmaster, but just what could have drawn Horus to attack such a well defended planet, and what might he be willing to sacrifice to fulfill his own dark destiny? Members Reviews: The first 5 or so were AMAZING. This is the book that killed it for ... I know there's lots of positive reviews for this one but really I cannot understand why. Up to this point I read all 28 Horus Heresy Books. The first 5 or so were AMAZING. This is the book that killed it for me and made me stop reading this series. They just seem to be winging it at this point. It took me a really long time to get through this one, it was painful. And some of Graham McNeil's other works were great, this one was just really, really boring and unengaging. Bolter porn describes this book. Horus! I have to admit, I'm always a fan of Horus so quite glad to see him and the Sons again. It's good to see what Horus is planning, and what he intends to do to get him in the position of being able to challenge the Emperor. Excellent book in the ongoing Horus Heresy series Excellent story about how far the Warmaster is willing to go to destroy the Empire his father has made. Fans of Warhammer 40K already know how everything ends, but itâs cool to see it fleshed out. Well written and captivating. The Rise of Horus I thoroughly enjoyed "Venegful Spirit" McNeill has written an amazing story to add to the Horus Heresy. The battle for Molech was incredibly well thought out from void battles to the final stand. His showcase of the Death Guard has been the first real appearance since Isstvaan III and I really enjoyed their part in the book. Don't miss out on this one, you won't put it down! Another superb book by Graham McNeill Graham McNeill is a superb writer, and I could not put his latest book down. It was good to get back to Horus again and the Sons of Horus, also interesting to see an epic battle against human forces rather than Legion vs. Legion. Titan usage as well, all kinds of stuff, not to mention a very epic climax. Highly recommended.

Title: The Genius Plague Author: David Walton Narrator: Nick Thurston Format: Unabridged Length: 14 hrs and 33 mins Language: English Release date: 10-03-17 Publisher: Blackstone Audio Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 47 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary Publisher's Summary: The contagion is in your mind In this science fiction thriller, brothers are pitted against each other as a pandemic threatens to destabilize world governments by exerting a subtle mind control over survivors. Neil Johns has just started his dream job as a code breaker for the NSA when his brother Paul, a mycologist, goes missing on a trip to collect samples in the Amazon jungle. Paul returns with a gap in his memory and a fungal infection that almost kills him. But once he recuperates, he has enhanced communication, memory, and pattern recognition. Meanwhile, something is happening in South America; others, like Paul, have also fallen ill and recovered with abilities they didn't have before. But that's not the only pattern - the survivors, from entire remote Brazilian tribes to American tourists, all seem to be working toward a common, deadly goal. Neil soon uncovers a secret, unexplained alliances form between governments that have traditionally been enemies, and Paul becomes increasingly secretive and erratic. Paul sees the fungus as the next stage of human evolution, while Neil is convinced that it is driving its human hosts to destruction. Brother must oppose brother on an increasingly fraught international stage, with the free will of every human on earth at stake. Can humanity use this force for good, or are we becoming the pawns of an utterly alien intelligence? Members Reviews: Intriguing idea poorly executed I really wanted to like this book - I had to make myself listen to the entire thing. This book has received 4-5 stars on multiple sites. The reader appears to be chosen for his ability to pronounce Portuguese words correctly but doesn't catch things like "neuron star". The main character is totally ridiculous - the brilliant 21 year white male old college drop out who solves the problems that no one else can. He loves the NSA! He can't wait to be part of the team! Yay! He doesn't freak out when the head of the NSA - he is travelling with him - is murdered in an explosion in Brasilia! The head of his group - a 70 something lifetime employee of the NSA - just loves her new hire and defers to the snotty know it all! This is a matter of national security! Just yuck The premise is interesting but vague - it has big holes in some areas. I am usually willing to suspend belief for a good sci-fi story - after all, it is fiction - but this story pushed it past my limits. There's a fungus among us! Excellent hard sci-fi. I'm not going to post too much information here, because it will be more fun for you if you don't have any preconception of what's going on before you start enjoying this book. Suffice it to say that this book is well written around an intriguing and original concept. The Audiobook performance is not the best I've heard, but the narrator grows on you and is appropriately nerdy for the main character. His female voices aren't bad either. The hard sci-fi aspects are built around an emotional core of losing a family member to Alzheimer's, but the book is not overly sappy either. It's also got some good spy tech going on.

Title: Perturabo: The Hammer of Olympia Subtitle: Primarchs, Book 4 Author: Guy Haley Narrator: Jonathan Keeble Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 48 mins Language: English Release date: 09-29-17 Publisher: Black Library Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 19 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary Publisher's Summary: Born to a life of political conflict, Perturabo was always considered a child prodigy among the people of Olympia - indeed, his philosophical and scientific works were beyond compare. But then, after his rediscovery by the Emperor and decades of thankless military campaigning on the Great Crusade, the primarch begins to resent his Legion's place in the Imperium. When word reaches him of turmoil on his adoptive home world, he orders the Iron Warriors to abandon their campaign against the alien hrud and crush this emerging rebellion by any means necessary.... Members Reviews: some are tragedies Some stories have happy endings, and in an odd way this one does as well, although it over all feels like a tragedy that even the Greeks would be proud of. Tedious and Uninspired This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more? Someone who enjoys listening to the same boring description of unimportant events and little character development or prefers to hit themselves repeatedly with a hammer... What do you think your next listen will be? Already listening to Master of Mankind and relishing it!!!! Would you listen to another book narrated by Jonathan Keeble? Yep, he's a brilliant narrator, but he can only do so much with what this author has given him. There's only so many ways you can play a spoiled teen who throws his toys out of the pram every time he's disappointed. If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Perturabo: The Hammer of Olympia? Pretty much the first four hours of the book... The author tries to impart the difficulties the Iron Warriors had to over come but it just became repetitive and I had no connection with the characters. The description leads one to believe that the novel will be about Perterabo sorting out Olympia but that only consumes an hour of listening. Shame really because it could be so much more. Any additional comments? Unlike the two previous Primarch novels - Russ and Magnus the Red - which are wonderful additions to the the story line and fit seamlessly with the 'Horus Heresey' novels, Hammer doesn't quite measure up to its kin Angel Exterminatus. If you must really listen because you're a fan of the Iron Warriors or the P-man himself, be prepared for a long slogging listen that truly requires a like determination, iron within, iron without. Really good voice and storytelling A view into the mighty Primarch Perturabos mind and a telling of his long journey Love it! By far my favourite Primarchs book so far. Its all about Perturabo finding his place as a boy in the court of his adoptive father, but never feeling like he was truly appreciated, despite the fact he was highly valued and loved by all. A great book for learning the mind of probably the most bitter Primarch. Perturabo. Love him, Pity him, Hate him. This book will make you do all 3. Loved it. A very well paced and insightful look into one of the history and pschology of one of the lesser known characters from The Horus Heresy.
