Title: Fell Author: Jenn Ashworth Narrator: Vicky Hall Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 29 mins Language: English Release date: 07-14-16 Publisher: Sceptre Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Fiction, Contemporary Publisher's Summary: A haunting and otherworldly tale of the impact on one family of a guest with seemingly magical powers, who alters the course of their lives in ways neither they nor he foresee. A haunting, mysterious tale imbued with the force of myth by the award-winning author of A Kind of Intimacy. When Annette Clifford returns to her childhood home on the edge of Morecambe Bay, she despairs: the long-empty house is crumbling, undermined by two voracious sycamores. What she doesn't realise is that she's not alone: her arrival has woken the spirits of her parents, who anxiously watch over her, longing to make amends. Because as the past comes back to Jack and Netty, they begin to see the summer of 1963 clearly, when Netty was desperately ill and a stranger moved in. Charismatic, mercurial Timothy Richardson, with his seemingly miraculous powers of healing, who drew all their attention away from Annette.... Now they must try to draw another stranger towards her, one who can rescue her. Blurring the boundaries between the corporeal and spirit worlds and subtly echoing the myth of Baucis and Philemon, this is an eerily beautiful, evocative and highly original novel which underlines the eternal potency of hope. Members Reviews: A beautifully written fantasy--RECOMMENDED! An amazing, interesting, challenging, fantasy where no one is who or what they seem, and the pain of not facing responsibility is something carried forever in the soul. Beautifully written. Highly recommended! I set my hopes on there being some big finale that rounded everything off in the end... I received a free copy of Fell from the publisher in return for an honest review. Fell is beautifully written and was a pleasure to read. Jenn Ashworth creates many haunting, beautiful and vivid pictures and has a wonderful way with words. I particularly loved how the house was portrayed, the descriptions of the decaying house really brought the place to life. But, I struggled to connect to her characters. The characters were individual enough but I couldn't picture them, I couldn't relate to them or get to know them on the level that I felt was needed. They were, literally, characters on the page, they didn't have enough substance or colour to make them stand out. The book is narrated by the ghosts of the main characters parents and although I did enjoy them taking me through their lives, I found them rather flat and emotionless at times. The distance between them and what they were watching felt huge, like they weren't a part of what they were reliving, I wanted more emotion from them. It was like they were watching someone else's lives, reliving someone else's memories, not their own. I am left with many questions. Every page read as though it was floating on the surface of something deeper. The book doesn't tell a full story, nor does it give me enough to fill in the gaps. Who is Tim really? What exactly is this strange power he has? What happened to Annette between then and now to make her the way she is? What was the fortune teller hinting at with Annette and her gifts? Is Annette's gift part of what drew her parents back? What was it that Tim saw in Annette? I kept reading on expecting to learn more, to have answers to these questions.

Title: Augustown Author: Kei Miller Narrator: Dona Croll Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 37 mins Language: English Release date: 07-14-16 Publisher: Orion Publishing Group Genres: Fiction, Contemporary Publisher's Summary: Ma Taffy may be blind, but she sees everything. So when her great-nephew, Kaia, comes home from school in tears, what she senses sends a deep fear through her. While they wait for Kaia's mama to come home from work, Ma Taffy recalls the story of the flying preacherman and a great thing that did not happen. A poor suburban sprawl in the Jamaican heartland, Augustown is a place where many things that should happen don't, and plenty of things that shouldn't happen do. For the story of Kaia leads back to another momentous day in Jamaican history, the birth of the Rastafari and the desire for a better life. Augustown is a novel about inequality and aspiration, memory and myth and the connections between people which can transcend these things but not always change them. It is a window onto a moment in Jamaican history when the people sought to rise up above their lives and shine. Members Reviews: Leo Miller's Novel This was a great audiobook to listen to, especially as someone with Jamaican heritage. Really nice voice too, fitted with the book perfectly. Would recommend. Title: Pentacles Author: Sabarna Roy Narrator: Colin Newcomer Format: Unabridged Length: 2 hrs and 52 mins Language: English Release date: 05-03-16 Publisher: Leadstart Publishing Pvt Ltd Genres: Fiction, Contemporary Publisher's Summary: Pentacles comprises one long story and four short poems by Sabarna Roy. The work delightfully bridges the gap between the mundane and arcane writings of today and provides an interesting, yet intellectually stimulating, treat for the discerning listener. "New Life" is a long story written from the perspective of a successful adult whose mother had deserted the family for another man. The teenage angst and the scars it has left behind on the psyche of the protagonist are subtly reflected in the character. The different elements and characters of the story are beautifully interwoven to produce an intense and compelling story of an adult haunted by the trauma of being deserted by his mother. The work is interspersed with thought-provoking views on issues like love and socio-economic conditions in India. The traditional rhyme- and metre-dominated poems are on love, loss and longing. Unshackled by the bonds of rhyme and metre, Sabarna's free verses evoke the stark reality of urban life, hitting you straight in the guts. The use of everyday urban imagery adds to the appeal of the compositions. The concrete prison of urban life and the unfulfilled desire to escape to a simple life is aptly brought out in "The Tower." The other poems of the collection are more biographical in nature with the protagonist being the member of the fairer sex. The free verses sketch out their life story with its attendant pathos, poignancy, and logic. The best part of all the compositions is that the listener will definitely identify with the poet and will, in one form or other, have similar stories to narrate.

Beginning in 1912 on Ellis Island and told in three voices over four generations, I'll Always Be with You is a profound celebration of the power of family. Members Reviews: Love love love!!! I would recommend this book to young adult readers and up. It has the right balance to be enjoyed and treasured by this wide range of ages. The combination of old world wisdom and contemporary life make a delight contrast while at the same time allows the reader to appreciate the similarities found in families and their importance and values throughout time. Now what can we imagine for Teddy and his family in the 21st Century? This reader can't wait to find out. Perhaps the author will bring us "Teddy's Senior Year" or "Discovery, a new definition of Family" we need to find out how life evolves for our characters! I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I thought the character development was very good, easy to empathize with Teddy, and his mother Mary as well as Rosetta. I remember well the era of Rosetta and Stan's love, and how difficult a time it was for families and young lovers of different races. I hope for a sequel to discover how issues that were left hanging, may be resolved. Striking me was the necessary love of family and friends to work through a tragedy This book is about a real life tradegy and all of the challenges it brings to the family. It also brings out what can be learned from tragedy and how families can begin to put their life back together. Striking me was the necessary love of family and friends to work through a tragedy. The book was a mixture of sadness, happiness and some hutmor. Can't wait for the followup book!! Wise and wonderful--highly recommend! I couldn't put this down once I picked it up! A well-written story that poignantly touches on the best and worst of the human experience, with insightful cultural and historical contexts. It's a heartwarming read and one I've enjoyed gifting to others, as it's a book that most anyone will connect to. Looking forward to her next book! Something for Everyone I loved this story.

Members Reviews: Very difficult to rate After reading this, I find it very difficult to rate. Mostly because of how very sad it is. The sadness is not only in the story itself, but also in the relationships of the characters. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say it's a short, but intense read with characters that are very real. It's not a warm, fuzzy read, but very good none the less, and not typical at all. The final heartbreaking chapters moved me from disbelief to tears some of joy some of sadness From the word go this book grabbed my attention and kept it to the very end. This was a book I could not put down and I read it in 3 hours. The characters were profoundly flawed and that only added to the realism of the story, the relationships between them all are bittersweet yet heartwarming. It's a story of one family who suffer because of one betrayal then as the story progresses you find that there was more betrayal that has happened in the past, it was so well written that I could see myself being one or another of the characters and put myself In their shoes at time I found myself rooting for one character then in the next chapter I was rooting for another and wishing I could grab the and shake them and tell them not to be so prideful and explain to them all they would loose out on. In the second half of the story the main two characters find themselves reunited in the darkest of circumstance and they have to find a way to get through it all together and that leaves them both reeling! The final heartbreaking chapters moved me from disbelief to tears some of joy some of sadness, and it's a credit to the author that she was able to convey these emotions with the telling of this fabulous story Stevie Turner is a good writer and tells a good story Stevie Turner is a good writer and tells a good story. It wasn't what I was expecting and read more like journal entries most of the time. Not a bad thing, just not expected. If you're looking for hard core sex scenes and ROCK 'n' ROLL then I suggest you look elsewhere (maybe do a "New Adult" "rock star romance" search. There're TONS of poorly written erotica rock star stories out there for you to enjoy. Just don't pay for them. You can also troll the Interwebz for better fan fiction). This is a gentle story that deals with the fall out of character choices. At times you want to shake them, but mostly you're along for the ride, figuring out what makes them tick, and maybe, if you're of a certain age, drawing some parallels. At times Clare's pathological stubbornness is annoying. Honestly, Clare. Yes, you were wronged, but damn. I'm sure there are those out there who would make the same choice as she did, but to those of us who wouldn't, it gets a bit tedious watching her let that color every part of her life.

Title: The Imagined Child Author: Jo-Anne Richards Narrator: Terry Lloyd-Roberts Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 20 mins Language: English Release date: 03-07-16 Publisher: Audioshelf Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Fiction, Contemporary Publisher's Summary: Odette is a scriptwriter for a popular TV soap opera. When she moves to the small Free State town of Nagelaten, she hopes to leave her problems - of family, fraught relationships, and experiences of crime - behind in Joburg. To the dwellers of Nagelaten, Odette appears to be escaping a painful breakup in a place she knows no one - and won't have to share her secrets. When Odette begins seeing the local engineer, Adriaan, also an outcast in this small town, secrets begin to surface around the murder of Adriaan's wife. Odette's world begins to unravel when her troubled daughter, Mandy, is suspected of killing the baby she was au pairing in the UK and soon comes to live with Odette, who has a secret of her own. It isn't until Mandy befriends a strange man named Wolfie that Odette finally begins to question the mysteries of the small town. Odette is forced to face her mistakes of the past and the truth of a murder long since buried with the dead. The Imagined Child is a carefully plotted whodunit that combines Jo-Anne's trademark lyrical style with tight suspense and will keep you guessing until the last minute. Critic Reviews: "Jo-Anne's trenchant observation of human behaviour, always laced with humour, makes for an engrossing read." (Athol Fugard) "The Imagined Child is an impeccably researched - and sometimes very funny - portrait of upheaval and recreation in the New South Africa." (Diane Awerbuck) "A captivating and quietly confident tale of life in the new South Africa. Jo-Anne Richards has a deft touch with words and uses it to weave a personal story set in a nation still trying to settle after the dust." (Shubnum Khan) Members Reviews: A rich portrayal of a mother and her daughter Jo-Anne Richards is a writer with a great insight into people. In this novel the relationship between a mother and her daughter is pivotal to everything else in her life. Odette is an out-liner for a soap opera on South African television. She is divorced and has a teenager, Mandy, with some relatively minor genetic issues affecting her learning and social abilities. Nevertheless, Mandy has finished school and has taken a year to go to London as an au pair for a family with two young children. While outwardly supporting Many, Odette is on tenterhooks that something will go wrong and relieved to have the problem at some physical distance. Odette takes her new freedom as an opportunity to change her life. She leaves Johannesburg and moves to a small town within driving distance and only goes to meetings in Johannesburg once a week. These include meetings with the soap opera team and weekly meetings with her psychologist. She also invests considerable money in a coffee shop in the town. Odette is looking for a simpler life, but there she is disappointed. She is burgled almost immediately, and the town seems to have some dark secrets that no one wants to discuss. She meets a farmer, and they form a relationship, for which Odette thinks she might settle, but it is clear very early in the book that she will never truly be accepted by this closed Afrikaans community although outwardly they are welcoming. Then the baby Mandy is looking after dies mysteriously and she returns to live with her mother while the police in London decide whether to charge her.

Title: The Butcher's Hook Author: Janet Ellis Narrator: Janet Ellis Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 43 mins Language: English Release date: 02-25-16 Publisher: Two Roads Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes Genres: Fiction, Contemporary Publisher's Summary: Longlisted for the Desmond Elliot Prize 2016. The debut novel by actress and presenter Janet Ellis, The Butcher's Hook is the dark and unexpected tale of a young girl in 18th-century London determined to take her life in her own hands. No matter the cost. Anne Jaccob is coming of age in late 18th-century London. When she is taken advantage of by her tutor - and her father's great friend - her powerlessness in the world is brought home to her. And it joins several other formative experiences in her short life so far that will serve to dictate her future actions. Her saviour appears in the form of Fub, the butcher's boy. But will what she learns in his company actually be her salvation or her damnation? Anne's morality is certainly more than dubious, but the influences on her are no less so. And through Ellis' rich but deft storytelling and portrayal of Anne's strength of character, listeners will find themselves almost excusing her escalating crimes, even when self-defence becomes overridden by something darker. This is a book in which the panoramas and filthy streets of the city, the colour and bear-baiting of St Bartholomew's Fair, the nobility and the hypocrisy of learning and piety, the excitement and envy of love and obsession, and the visceral rites of passage of passion and death are all gloriously celebrated and scrutinised. A sweeping tale - but always an intimate one - told with the same intricate details as Sarah Waters' works and the compelling darkness of Hannah Kent's Burial Rites. Critic Reviews: "A high-finish performance." (Observer, New Faces of Fiction) "Dark, weird and gloriously feminist." (Elle UK, Best New Books For 2016) "A boldness rare in a first novel" (Mail on Sunday) "A strange, unsettling story." (The Times) "Audacious." (Sunday Express) "A top-class debut." (Fanny Blake, Woman & Home) Members Reviews: A fascinating read Where there are no choices a woman goes to extraordinary lengths for love... or infatuation. I was sorry when It ended... more please! Not good I really wanted to like this. But I really didn't. The central character, Anne, is awful. She's intentionally hateful, but I didn't find this intriguing, just nasty and immature. For me the narration is irritating with plenty of laughable over-the-top voices - Mr Onions, for example. WOW I didn't see that coming! During a book signing at Main Street Trading, St Boswells, a member of the audience asked why the story had to be so shocking. I was intrigued to see what they meant. Personally I don't find it shocking as a read a lot of crime novels however it was not the type of story I expected. Fortunately Janet's style of writing had me hooked from the start and the intriguing character of Anne Jaccob was so refreshingly different not exactly a heroine but a worthy protagonist. I enjoyed Jesse Burtons The miniaturist - and would say that is the nearest book I could compare the Butchers hook too. Really a fascinating read and a story that could only be told first person through the eyes of Anne. If you like sweet romance novels then this is not the book for you but if you like something different then read away. I look forward to Janet's next novel
