Title: The Devil's Highway Author: Gregory Norminton Narrator: Melody May, Gregory Norminton, Laura Kirman Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 50 mins Language: English Release date: 01-25-18 Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: Three journeys. Three thousand years. One destination. The Devil's Highway is a thrilling, epic and timely tale of love, loss, fanaticism, heroism and sacrifice. His fingers fastened about her stone. He brought it to the light and held it to his nose. There was lightning locked inside. He rolled the stone in his palm to give it the heat of his body. She had come to him, catching his eye where she lay among dull flints. She alone among the stones had spoken. An ancient British boy, discovering a terrorist plot, must choose between his brother and his tribe. In the 21st century, two men - one damaged by war, another by divorce - clash over their differing claims on the land, and a young girl is caught between them. In the distant future, a gang of feral children struggles to reach safety in a burning world. A Roman road, an Iron Age hill fort, a hand-carved flint, and a cycle of violence that must be broken. As gripping as it is dazzling, The Devil's Highway is a bold and intimate novel that spans centuries and challenges our dearest assumptions about what it means to be civilised. Critic Reviews: "A work of staggering imagination." (Jay Griffiths, author of Wild: An Elemental Journey) "A fierce, immersive vision of a novel. Wise, humane but never sentimental, The Devil's Highway is a story of love, rebellion, trauma and survival. It is the story of our relationship with the natural world - of how we got here, and where we might go next. No story could be more important." (Tom Bullough, author of Addlands) "Extraordinary and important: taut, clear-eyed, bleak, tender, and ultimately redemptive." (Charles Foster, author of Being a Beast)

Title: Walking Wounded Author: Sheila Llewellyn Narrator: Joshua Higgott, Simon Slater Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 48 mins Language: English Release date: 01-25-18 Publisher: Sceptre Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: A stirring debut about the complex relationship between a soldier and his psychiatrist, set in a failing psychiatric hospital between the end of the Second World War and the founding of the NHS. 'Daniel stared at the white-ish brain matter clinging to the haft and clogging up the eye of the needle. Can it really be as easy as that - to scrape out someone's depression, their melancholy, their anxiety? To scrape out someone's emotions?' Set in Northfield, an understaffed military psychiatric hospital immediately before the NHS is founded, Walking Wounded is the story of a doctor and his patient: David Reece, a young journalist-to-be whose wartime experiences in Burma have come back to haunt him violently; and Daniel Carter, one of the senior psychiatrists, a man who is fighting his own battles as well as those of his patients. Based closely on extensive research and inspired by the author's own experience treating victims of PTSD, this moving and impressive debut explores violence and how much harm it does to those forced to inflict it in the name of war. It also captures the dilemmas of the medics themselves as they attempt to 'fix' their patients, each of whom raises the question of what has happened to their humanity, what can be done to help them, and what we are willing to sacrifice in the name of healing.

Title: Where Home Is Subtitle: Laramie Series, Book 3 Author: Karen J. Hasley Narrator: Callie Beaulieu Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 12 mins Language: English Release date: 01-24-18 Publisher: Tantor Audio Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: The year is 1910. Katherine Davis, MD, is an intelligent, self-assured, and attractive woman whose confidence perfectly reflects the confidence of a new century overflowing with scientific, medical, and technological breakthroughs. Without a moment's hesitation, young Dr. Davis accepts the professional invitation of a lifetime when she travels to Chicago's Hull-House to work with the celebrated social reformer, Jane Addams. Katherine is an excellent doctor eager to make a difference in the world and the people around her, and Chicago's crowded tenements with their burgeoning immigrant population offer just that opportunity. Everything Katherine believes about right and wrong, about good and evil she learned from her parents and the secure childhood they gave her. But times have changed, and Katherine can no longer rely on the values of the past. She has outgrown that past and the home of her childhood seems outdated and old-fashioned compared to the progressive society around her. She's an independent woman, who must make her own way and follow her own ideals. When Katherine meets the dazzling Douglas Gallagher, a man as confident and as fearless as she, a successful man who has left his own past behind, an uncompromising - even ruthless - man, she is asked to choose between her past and her future. And the choice is so much more complicated than she expected! Because for Katherine, deciding where - and who - home really is will change her forever. And for good. Members Reviews: Great book series. Wanted to read some of Karen's books. Unfortunately I started with this book because it was about a women Dr. I am a nurse and it sounded interesting. I however didn't realize at first that this was a series and it is book #3. It took away some of the suspense of book #1 & 2 because I knew what was going to happen. A true great experience to read this awesome book.... The writing in this book will grip your heart and not let go. You will smile, feel good, get tears and then weep. In the end, I was opening crying as the book closed. What a tremendous story-line and I felt every moment of it. A female Doctor Katherine Davies completes her medical school training and spends a year as an intern in Chicago helping mostly the less fortunate. She was independent and dedicated to her profession. Katherine believed she would become the spinster of the family because she couldn't take the time and energy away from being with her patients to find the love of a man and home of her own. He was right there in front of her patiently waiting for her to come home. I got tense when babies were born, people with mental and emotional problems brought fear and wept when the parents passed on to the home with the Lord. To read this book, is an experience I will long remember. It is just plain awesome and I love this author. Lovely historical fiction It is 1910, and Katherine Davis has graduated from medical school and taken a one-year position as the doctor at Hull House in Chicago. She throws herself into the work she loves while at the same time being courted by Douglas Gallagher, a wealthy man who isnât quite what he seems. The year goes by quickly and soon she is on her way back to Laramie Wyoming excited to see family and friends and hopeful that she will be able to set up her own practice. Where Home Is is a gentle love story mixed into the historical backdrop of the early 20th century.

Please note: This audiobook is in Spanish. Opiniones de los miembros: Three Stars Interesante. Bien escrito. Three Stars I expected more history Superficial Falta profundidad al libro, habria sido interesante mas hechos historicos, mas conversaciones con Voltaire, etc catalina la grande I did not like this novel. You cannot know much of the goverment of this Queen, you just know all the lovers she had, and also I didn't like the way the author writes.

Title: The Beaufort Bride Author: Judith Arnopp Narrator: Tessa Petersen Format: Unabridged Length: 5 hrs and 14 mins Language: English Release date: 01-22-18 Publisher: Judith Arnopp Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: As King Henry VI slips into insanity and the realm of England teeters on the brink of civil war, a child is married to the mad king's brother. Edmund Tudor, Earl of Richmond, takes his child bride into Wales, where she discovers a land of strife and strangers. At Caldicot Castle and Lamphey Palace, Margaret must put aside childhood, acquire the dignity of a Countess, and, despite her tender years, produce Richmond with a son and heir. While Edmund battles to restore the king's peace, Margaret quietly supports his quest; but it is a quest fraught with danger. As the friction between York and Lancaster intensifies, 14-year-old Margaret, now widowed, turns for protection to her brother-in-law, Jasper Tudor. At his stronghold in Pembroke, two months after her husband's death, Margaret gives birth to a son whom she names Henry, after her cousin, the king. Margaret is small of stature, but her tiny frame conceals a fierce and loyal heart and a determination that will not falter until her son's destiny as the king of England is secured. The Beaufort Bride traces Margaret's early years from her nursery days at Bletsoe Castle to the birth of her only son in 1457 at Pembroke Castle. Her story continues in book two, The Beaufort Woman. Members Reviews: Well worth reading. Before reading this book, I had a scant knowledge of Margaret Beaufort's childhood. I knew she was married too young, gave birth to Henry V11, was a possessive mother who had ambitions for her son, and was the mother-in-law from Hell to Elizabeth of York. Judith Arnopp has done a great job with her research to write this book, seeing the knowledge is sketchy to say the least. She gives her characters depth in that she endows them with emotions that make them human. Of course, nobody knows what they thought or how they reacted to these situations - all of this is supposition. Judith Arnopp portrays Margaret Beaufort as a child with royal connections and very marketable assets. She was a pawn in the game of power and ambition. The submission of women and girls was assumed as natural. Men were the dominating force and Margaret was something to be used to attain power . In medieval times it wasn't seen as cruel to marry a girl of barely 11/12 to a mature man like Edmond Tudor. For him to consummate the marriage because he wanted a heir seems barbaric, but not in those days. That was a female's role, however young. Margaret endured a horrific birth because she was too immature to have a child with the result she could never produce another. It's a wonder she didn't die. As she managed to survive, this may have been to her eventual advantage, as she lived to old age. Childbirth was the great killer of women in her day. I felt the book was a little fanciful, that's why I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars. Margaret Arnopp assumes she had great fondness for her husband - but would she after such suffering? The book was entertaining and I've ordered The Beaufort Woman, so that speaks for itself. Thanks to The Beaufort Bride, I learned a few unknown facts about Margaret Beaufort. I hope they are right and not conjecture. If you like Tudor history, you will enjoy this book. her relationship with Edmund just as sweet.

Title: The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls Author: Emilie Autumn Narrator: Emilie Autumn Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 37 mins Language: English Release date: 01-22-18 Publisher: The Asylum Emporium Genres: Fiction, Historical Publisher's Summary: Two young women, living centuries apart, both accused of madness, communicate across time to fight a common enemy...their doctors. "It was the dog who found me." Such is the stark confession launching the harrowing scene that begins The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls as Emilie Autumn, a young musician on the verge of a bright career, attempts suicide by overdosing on the antipsychotics prescribed to treat her bipolar disorder. Upon being discovered, Emilie is revived and immediately incarcerated in a maximum-security psych ward, despite her protestations that she is not crazy, and can provide valid reasons for her actions if someone would only listen. Treated as a criminal, heavily medicated, and stripped of all freedoms, Emilie is denied communication with the outside world and falls prey to the unwelcome attentions of Dr. Sharp, head of the hospital's psychiatry department. As Dr. Sharp grows more predatory by the day, Emilie begins a secret diary to document her terrifying experience and to maintain her sanity in this environment that could surely drive anyone mad. But when Emilie opens her notebook to find a desperate letter from a young woman, imprisoned within an insane asylum in Victorian England and bearing her own name and description, a portal to another world is blasted wide open. As these letters from the past continue to appear, Emilie escapes further into this mysterious alternate reality where sisterhoods are formed, romance between female inmates blossoms, striped wallpaper writhes with ghosts, and highly intellectual rats speak the Queen's English. But is it real? Or is Emilie truly as mad as she is constantly told she is? The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls blurs harsh reality and magical historical fantasy whilst issuing a scathing critique of society's treatment of women and the mental health care industry's treatment of its patients. Welcome to the Asylum. Are you committed? Members Reviews: Thrilling and multi-media fun! This book is amazing. Written by Emilie herself, it switches between Emilie's all too real stay in a mental ward and the terrors that followed her, and the story of Emily with a Y, a young budding musician orphan in Victorian England. I haven't finished the book just yet, but from page one I was captivated! Emilie has amassed a following due to her spectacular vocals and boundary pushing lyrics, and this book does not disappoint her fans! Rumor has it, there's even a scavenger hunt hidden within the pages of this dual autobiographical fiction! If you want to take your experience outside of the book, Emilie has concocted an aptly dubbed "Rat Challenge" that you can participate in, where Emilie herself gives you the challenges that you must complete! All around a very fun experience and the fan-base is wonderfully open and inviting. Please note, though, the book does touch on very adult and unsavory topics so it is very much a book you should read first before giving to your young Plague Rat. Extremely helpful to your well being. I love this planner!!! I really hope she does one for next year too. Please, please, please! This planner is helpful in not only keeping your schedule together, but making you feel terrific. I love the before and after the month gathering of thoughts, goals, accomplishments, and helping of others. You can see and feel your goals, accomplishments, and helpfulness.
