Title: The Winds of Darkover Author: Marion Zimmer Bradley Narrator: Pete Bradbury Format: Unabridged Length: 5 hrs and 29 mins Language: English Release date: 01-18-18 Publisher: Recorded Books Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary Publisher's Summary: Turning under a blood-red sun, Darkover had always been a mystery to the Terrans. Its most puzzling riddles lay in the incredibly high mountains known as the Hellers. These jagged and almost impassable peaks sheltered races and enigmas that had become legend in the outside world - the howling inhuman Ya-men, the deadly Ghost Wind, the fiefs of barbaric brigand chieftains, decaying eldritch Dry-Towns...and the eerie forces that were worshiped as gods. Members Reviews: Good characters and plots. Good book to follow all attitudes in the characters just in any functional society. Different ways to deal with the situations of their life. Not good I prefer her later works, I find the different story lens too hard to follow. Reading it only when nothing else available. A Prelude to Singularity.... "The Winds of Darkover" is the first work in Bradley's Sharra arc. She really only hints at the eventually dominant theme of the arc - that high-level matrices could attain digital singularity a la HAL 9000 and years before William Gibson's "Neuromancer". The work is classic culture clash, thankfully lacks any questionable sexual antics, and provides a look at the culture of the Dry Towners. It is a quick and fun Darkover adventure that leaves one free from issues of Bradley and her husband's, Walter Breen, pedophilic crimes. Alyssa Rosenberg of the Washington Post has this to say about our re-reading of Marion in the post-revelations period: "Zimmer Bradleyâs descriptions of the awakening of sexual desire, the devastating power of sexual assault and the psychic damage wrought by constricting womenâs roles in society remain beautiful and evocative in ways that much contemporary pop culture could learn from. Many of her characters are young women, married in their teens, and Zimmer Bradley handles their shifting thoughts about their husbands, their roles as wives and their nascent sexuality with care and consideration....How, then, to reckon with the masterful public work and the allegedly monstrous private life? Zimmer Bradleyâs contradictions raise an unnerving but important proposition. Survivors can offer tremendous insight into pain and transcendence. But so can the people who committed or facilitated depredations against them." Bradley keeps telling the same story over and again Dan Barron is a Terran who has spent 5 years working on Darkover. Like nearly all Terrans on Darkover, he has spent all of his time in the Terran Zone and not actually among native Darkovans (which is the way the ruling class of Darkover wants it). He is demoted after causing a nearly horrific accident at the Thendara Spaceport. It seems that Dan has been having "visions" where he suddenly finds himself in some castle somewhere, but he doesn't actually go anywhere. When this happens on the job, accidents can and do happen. While Dan is skilled at what he does, the accident was so severe that he can no longer be trusted to do his job. When the Darkovan Lord Valdir Alton requests a Terran to help teach and train Darkovans to grind glass for telescope and binocular lenses, the Terran Vice-Coordinator selects Dan to do the job.

This new author gives us a fun science fiction story with lovable characters and an unlikely hero that sometimes, might just need to be rescued by the princess... well, sort of. The storyline and premise are solid ideas in the, "This could happen to anybody" sort of way that always makes it a little scary. No doubt, the authors military experience gives these pirates a clinical sophistication of form and function that makes them seem like a well organized, for profit, company in the business of looting. This might make a great movie as I can picture while I'm reading, all the beautiful views of open space, the frightful costumes the pirates wear, the futuristic space ships, and the opulence of that passenger carrier's first class decks. Some of these things would be easier in video, like all the new technology that needs to be described to the reader but is commonplace to those of 2138, and of course roughneck pirates engaging in fights with frightened passengers. The author does a great job describing these things in detail to us. The Audible version has a nice fluid reading to it and is worlds better than the monotone computer voice that comes with Kindle. The book starts with very few characters and seems heavy on descriptive details. At first I thought I might not like it, but I hung in there and was rewarded. This story is an adventure I definitely want to be on. So, I'll be awaiting the next book, and hopefully many more in this new series. ugh couldn't even get through the first seven chapters, I tried three times, so boring, don't bother Not as good as the description I was expecting a lot more from the book, that the description promised. Most of the book was pretty disappointing until the last one and a half hours where the book delivered what was expected from the publisher blurb

Title: Lifeless Subtitle: Lawless Saga, Book 2 Author: Tarah Benner Narrator: Jennifer O'Donnell Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 49 mins Language: English Release date: 12-26-17 Publisher: Podium Publishing Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 7 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary Publisher's Summary: The world as they know it is gone. Survival is the only law. When Lark and Soren escaped from San Judas, all they wanted was their freedom. Soren was desperate to rescue his younger brother from an abusive guardian, and Lark ached for a fresh start in life. What they found instead was a world destroyed - a country ravaged by drought, famine, and violent storms. Ghost towns line the highway, houses lay abandoned, and the few people who remain are struggling to survive. Lark is reeling from the loss of her best friend, and Soren will stop at nothing to find his brother. But when the gang is taken hostage by an ex-Marine and his family of misfits, they learn a disturbing truth about San Judas and the broken world that remains. Members Reviews: Lifeless Is Full Of Life! Lifeless is an amazing new chapter of the Lawless series! I love all of Tarah Benner's books and waited anxiously for Book 2 of Lawless! Lifeless does not disappoint! This is somewhat similar to The Fringe series in that her world building and character development are very realistic and detailed and I could see this series continuing for much more than 3 books. Lark and Soren's relationship continues to grow but not without pausing to deal with the fallout of the prison escape and what they are faced with out in a "real world" that is anything but what they expected. I was very happy to see Bernie survive and make it out as well along with another prisoner who is one of the last people you would expect. One thing that I find amazing about all of Tarah's books is that the situations she creates and the post apocalyptic worlds that she builds are all very believable and based on a lot of research. Her Author's Note at the end of each book gives readers a chance to learn how she chooses major parts of the storyline. If you have not read The Defectors Trilogy or The Fringe series, I highly recommend that you do! Don't forget to check out Bound in Blood either. It's a mystery set in a future where almost all human interaction is taken out of the workforce and handled by Artificial Intelligence, but what happens when you need more than facts and figures? Lawless does not disappoint! Tarah's characters are so vivid - you can't help falling for them! Each of her books leaves me craving the next one - not just this series mind you. I often find myself dropping out of whatever I am reading when a new book by Benner becomes available. This series does not disappoint! Heart pounding adventure, followed by deep affection from friends and lovers - I find myself cursing the villains, cheering the heroes, and applauding the supporting characters. Tarah spins just the right mix of mystery into her characters to keep you guessing whether they are friends or foe, toss in a little sexually charged tension and you will find yourself on the edge of your seat. Another stellar book from Benner! Benner has done it again with Lifeless. A remarkably well researched book with great characters and plot twists. The second book in a series is almost always a letdown, but Benner manages to strengthen the storyline and pull readers in even more with this second volume. Once you finish Lawless and Lifeless, go read everything else Benner has written! Great! Lark and Soren are free! But free to do what? Their world has changed drastically.

Title: An Oath of Dogs Author: Wendy N Wagner Narrator: Amy Finegan Format: Unabridged Length: 11 hrs and 19 mins Language: English Release date: 12-14-17 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary Publisher's Summary: Kate Standish has been on the forest-world of Huginn less than a week, and she's already pretty sure her new company murdered her boss. But the little town of mill workers and farmers is more worried about ecoterrorism and a series of attacks by the bizarre, sentient dogs of this planet than a death most people would like to believe is an accident. That is, until Kate's investigation uncovers a conspiracy which threatens them all. Members Reviews: I kept waiting for it to get good but it didn't. It started off ok. But it just kept getting weirder and weirder. There were too many characters, and they weren't memorable enough to differentiate one from the other. I couldn't keep track of all of them after a while. A lot of the plot points didn't really add up either. Especially the ending. Like, that was a major let down. Like they build it all up to "we're taking down the bad guys" and then they just get prescribed new meds and everything is ok even though they don't take down the bad guys. Overall the book wasn't very original. I know I can't really get into how it wasn't original without spoilers so spoilers a planet where what you believe turns true - been done #ForbiddenPlanet #LikeTenEpisodesOfStarTrek an outsider who moves to a small town to escape an over-industrialized earth and encounters locals that turn into dogs at night - been done small town people with ridiculously bad ideas about the environment but the hero somehow learns to get along with them despite disagreeing with them and doing NOTHING to help fix things - been done people who break the curse by doing the right thing - been done oh and that robot you see in the cover art? THERE'S NO ROBOTS IN THIS BOOK honestly I would've returned this but by the time I decided it was bad I was already a third of the way in and my conscience bugged me about doing that so I finished it

Title: Till Dawn Do Us Part Author: May Sage Narrator: Lauren Sweet Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 51 mins Language: English Release date: 12-12-17 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary Publisher's Summary: Three hundred years has passed since the Last War. That's how the Elites called the third worldwide conflict, swearing that their rule would ensure that humanity would stay at peace forever. They lied. After the war, two thirds of women were born barren, so the fertile ones have a duty to society they must fulfill by either giving birth to a child by their 25th year, or go through the Auctions. Xander spends most of his time in his lab, but once a year, he has no choice: every unattached, childless male in the City is bidden to attend the Auctions, even the very first genetically engineered soldier they now call Elite. He never had any intentions to bid on a woman; children weren't on his radar, and if they had been, he wouldn't have needed the ridiculous farce his party intended to abolish as soon as they were elected. Then, he sees her. Ruby Ruth Sterling. The woman for whom he would destroy the world. Till Dawn Do Us Part is a novella, part of a series. Expect a cliffhanger. Members Reviews: I love all the May Sage books I've read I love all the May Sage books I've read, including this one. She is a master at taking conventional romance genre tropes and making them fun and absorbing to read. This book has some obvious tropes from both romance and dystopian fiction, namely the marriage of convenience where the couple fall in love anyway despite class differences (romance genre) and the need to repopulate a post-apocalyptic society leading to fertile women having to breed whether they like it or not (post-apocalyptic). Also: physically superior human immortals, of course, choosing whether to bring the normal girl into the immortal realm, now that he can't live without her. And seeing a king/prince person brought to his knees by a mere mortal is always an enjoyable fantasy. But- I swear- these predicable elements simply ground me when the rest of the book feels excitingly unpredictable and fun with dialogue and world building. There are many grammatical errors she will hopefully revise, but I'm willing to take some grammatical errors in trade for her books! Thank you May! This may not be the first book to read by May Sage, since it's short and has a cliffhanger, and you'll have to wait for the sequels. One night read. OMG, yes! I LOVED this. I want to cry, not because of the way it ended, the author have plenty of warning that the ending was a cliff hanger. But because of how amazing Xander is, I love him. I need to know more about every single component of this story. I need to know what happens to Ruby, is she going to have a baby? Well she think about the idea of immortality? Do we even get to know in book two? I'm so in line with the idea of this story, I could see it actually happening. I wish I were Ruth. I want to be her right now. Wow, just amazing. I need the next one! Now would be good!!! Very promising short novela! I want more of them This is a very short read from new Universe created by May Sage. As usual author gave us a heroine that knows her way, is strony but still feminine. Ruby (or rather Ruth as she prefers) is a girl that has everything almost and she would be able to step away from Draft tradition. What ismher reason to participate in it? Get into her mind to Discover it. You wont be disappointed with her. Xander/Alexander is a personifiacation of masculine being that can make you droll.

Their plight is desperate, and escape from the roaming Chaos Legions seems impossible. Can they hold out against the forces of the World Eaters long enough to reach an unlikely salvation? Members Reviews: Great 40K Audio Drama I am a fan of all things 40K, so I found this audio drama exciting and very engaging, I listen to it in my car on the way home, the narrators and audio actors are an incredible ensemble and mesh together very well. Surprised I bought this because it was part of the Hours Heresy series, I wasn't at all confident I was going to like it. I was very surprised. The way it was read was more like a radio drama than a standard audio book (in which the book is first and then someone reads it). Even the sounds effects work in its favor and add alot to make this something you can listen to while painting or cleaning your house, therein turning a dull activity into one which is both productive and enjoyable. WOW! This is very cool. Hearing the book is awesome, I like the detail Gav Thorpe applies to his work. I had to stop all other activities to hear this audio book. Raven's Flight Review One of the better audio dramas about the Horus Heresy. My favorite one so far. I just wish that these would start to become available as downloads on itunes or amazon. This was a well received Christmas gift This was a well received Christmas gift for my son. He was very pleased to get it and thoroughly enjoyed it. He said it was well done and entertaining to listen to while on the road.

Title: Censure Subtitle: Horus Heresy Author: Nick Kyme Narrator: Gareth Armstrong, Sean Barett, Eliis Eliis, Chris Fairbank, David Timson Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 15 mins Language: English Release date: 11-28-17 Publisher: Black Library Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary Publisher's Summary: In the depths of Calth's arcology network, the Underworld War has raged for years. Aeonid Thiel, previously an honoured sergeant of the Ultramarines, once again finds himself in trouble. Pitted against the daemonic forces of the Word Bearers, he has no choice but to venture back to the ravaged surface and brave the deadly solar flares that have scoured all life from this world. With a lowly Imperial Army trooper as his only companion, it falls to him to drive the maniacal Dark Apostle Kurtha Sedd and his warband from the overrun XIII Legion stronghold. Members Reviews: HELLSPAAWNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!! Loved it. The story is a continuation of the "Know No Fear" novel. It's part of the continuing saga of the Battle of Calth. The main character is Aeonid Thiel, of the Ultramarines Legion. Before the battle of Calth, he was strategist marked for censure for daring to theorize combat between fellow Space Marines, which was thought to be impossible and bordering on "treason". When that very theory becomes reality, he quickly is elevated to hero status. In this story he, and a lone Imperial Guardsman, become the only hope for a group of Space Marines and civilians that have been captured for some nefarious purpose, by some Word Bearers. Terrific story. The audio and voice effects are outstanding. Great Sounding Another quality audio drama. I love Black Library, and in particular the Horus Heresy series, and this did not let me down. A great tale of a Space Marine having to go the hard way and an inspiring tale of an Imperial citizen that follows. My only real previous complaint is that there is a tendency for the actors to drop their voices low, not a problem until the background noise surges. This audio drama did not have that issue, so I'm really happy. Captivating I usually listen to Warhammer audiobooks as I go to work but this one was so captivating that I had to shut It off or I would run off the road. This story is well written though I was perplexed how the codex of the Ultramarines made it into this story since it is base on the Heresy, I thought Gullimman wrote this after most of the Traitor Legions were push back into the Eye. Oh well I guess I will just have to live, with it. Overall great story, great acting and a great way to spend a few minutes before walking into work. good read. great audio. wish it was longer. Nice to see a rebel Ultra Marine running around out there raising some hell. Five Stars great story 40k world rules
