I will save it. I'll save it for the episode, but I'll have a breakdown on the episode.
Christina Lopez
You're having a mental breakdown on the episode?
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah, I am. Welcome to Glamorous Trash. This is a celebrity memoir podcast where we dig into all of the glamour and all of the trash. I'm your host, Chelsea Devontes. I'm a TV writer, comedian, author, filmmaker. You know, sometimes I'm in stuff too. And this is not a book recap episode. Please click a different episode if you want a book recap. This is a cookie jar episode. This is where we discuss all of the hot topics under the Glamorous trash umbrella that don't fit into a memoir episode. Hot updates. Book updates. Basically, lots of things happen in and around the memoir episodes and they're so good. And this is an episode where we discuss them all. So today we are going to be discussing Britney Spears jewelry line. I have some corrections to issue and a new shocker for Jojo Levesque's memoir. We also have some, dare I say, insane updates on Bethany Joy Lynz's book, the Cookies. Solved who? Mary Bonet's baseball player kind of shitty affair guy is. I mean, I guess I can't definitively say they solved it, but I think they solved it. You know, if you happen to be feeling like dog shit still about the election, there were some really amazing messages in the Patreon chat. We're gonna share them so you can, you know, get a little bomb for your soul. Feel a little better about your day. There was also a very cool segment on our Stevie Nicks episode that we had to for time, but I was discussing with our expert guests the Olivia Rodrigo drama with Taylor Swift and the idea that, like, Olivia, like, stole her music. And I got really cool insight on that. And we've got a psychic moment. We've got some women we need to check on, and we're going to talk about at the very end just kind of like what glamorous trash is up to as a whole. We haven't done one of these episodes in a while. And as always, joining me as my co host is our podcast producer, who I now call the mayor of Patreon because she's running those chats. It's Christina Lopez.
Christina Lopez
Hi, Chelsea. I'm so happy to be here.
Chelsea Devontes
We were just on a meeting together and it's very funny to then just turn on the microphone. Yes.
Christina Lopez
And pretend like we haven't talked and go through it, like, every day. All day.
Chelsea Devontes
All day, all day. This cookie jar episode is lit. I was putting together the beat sheet with you and I was like, oh, my God, there's so much to cover. So what do you say we just get into it?
Christina Lopez
Yeah, let's dive right in.
Chelsea Devontes
Okay. So coming to us from Chris, an OG cookie, like one of the, like, back when I had 57 followers, somehow Chris was one of them. And Chris posted in the chat that Henry Kissinger, who, you know, no longer with us, put in his, like, will that he wants a statue of him to be erected at Arlington National Cemetery. And he was like, I want it to be huge, and I've left so much money for this to happen. And, like, please make a big boy statue of me in the cemetery. Which, like, I didn't know you. I sort of thought other people had to sponsor a statue of you.
Christina Lopez
Yeah, that definitely. I don't think that's something you're supposed. Unless you're a dictator. That's not something that you request, I don't think. Especially in a place where, like, you're. You're asking yourself to be put in wake with the people who are the consequences of your policies and actions.
Chelsea Devontes
That's the, that's the wildest part that this man, it's at his hand a lot of the death in that cemetery. And he's like, make a 90 foot bronze statue to, like, look over. That's. It's pretty haunting.
Christina Lopez
Yeah. I wonder if it was like, he gave it specific instructions, like, make sure it's my most charming photo and I don't know, have a celebrity in the background that I dated.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah, definitely, like, put a gaggle of women who wrote celebrity memoirs around me and make me three inches taller. So here's what I think. I don't know if it's gonna happen. It's just a request. But if it does happen, group cookie field trip to push it over. What do you think?
Christina Lopez
I think that's fair.
Chelsea Devontes
I mean, I'm personally in. I'll push by myself if I have to.
Christina Lopez
I think we might actually have to get in line. I think there will be quite a few people looking to do that.
Chelsea Devontes
I love this for us. He continues to come up in memoirs. He. He just came up in another episode that's coming. So, y' like he remains the celebrity memoir cameo. I was gonna say fuck boy, but I'm like just like little ding dong, little fuck nut.
Christina Lopez
Yeah. I wonder, is it him or Mick Jagger that comes up more? And also the weird thing that's happening that Ryan O'Neal keeps popping up everywhere now.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah, yeah, no, it's definitely Kissinger. Mick Jagger, he's coming back up. But like Kissinger has eclipsed both him and Prince.
Christina Lopez
Wow.
Chelsea Devontes
Okay, our next topic. Britney Spears is starting a jewelry line. Now here's the two things I want to say. One, she is starting with like, it's a little bit of body jewelry. It's like, like bracelets that connect to the rings on your hand. And 2012, Chelsea would have been so hot for this. Just like right around the time when Forever 21 was doing like metallic body tattoos. Like this was an era like obviously as a maximalist, like I was very into body jewelry. So it feels a little late.
Christina Lopez
It's a lot of ring stacking.
Chelsea Devontes
Lot of ring stacking. Yeah. So I look, look, I'm into it, but it feels a little late. But I think the funniest thing to me is how many cookies were like, oh my God, her mom is gonna be devastated because if you did not listen to our subscriber only episode, which I promise you on God, the entire subscription is worth it. Just for the Lynn Spears episode. It's a much longer, really wild story. But the headline is that Britney Spears corrupt manager got into her life by conning her mom into thinking she was going to have a QVC jewelry line. And then obviously was like, psych, no jewelry line for you. I'm stealing your daughter. And so now for Britney to debut with with jewelry. What do you think? Do you think she has any idea this is like a clapback to her mom?
Christina Lopez
I think she does. I feel like she's been very clear about like the grievances she has with each and every single one of them that is etched within her soul, rightfully so.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah.
Christina Lopez
But I also. I think it's like, this is a little bit of a vintage move for a celebrity to make. Not a lot of them are dipping into Julia lines. A lot of them are doing hair. Hair and. And.
Chelsea Devontes
And beauty and alcohol, coffee.
Christina Lopez
Yeah.
Chelsea Devontes
Clothes. Yeah, you're right. Yeah, that's a really good point. Listen, I love it for her. She recently wrote an Instagram post where we talked about on the Patreon chat, but there's. The first page of it was a little like I was journaling and, like, the room turned red. I saw fire. And you're sort of like, ooh. Then again, listen, who hasn't seen the room turn red during a good journal sesh? Can't say. Can't say. I haven't been there.
Christina Lopez
Especially in the last couple days.
Chelsea Devontes
Especially in the last couple days. And so. But then the last part of her post, it's just this very beautiful walkthrough of how much writing and sharing is helping her heal and realizing that, like, people really fucked with her. Like, the way she's walking through her trauma is like a baby bird. And I think it really scares some people sometimes to, like, see what that looks like. Because going through trauma and coming out of it is. Listen, I'm biased, but one of the hardest things you could ever do, and she's doing it publicly, and I think sometimes it scares people. But it's such a beautiful message that I will buy. I will buy the ring stackings that connect in my bracelet. I will. Oh, my God, Chelsea.
Christina Lopez
Are we getting those as, like, company gifts this year?
Chelsea Devontes
Okay, I don't know if I don't know about that, actually. You know what? Okay, Perfect segue. We're getting merch, y'all. And listen, if you don't want to buy our merch, please buy Britney Spears jewelry line. So we gotta spread our support around. So put your support somewhere. Okay, so we have merch available to order right now, and I'm just going to tell you about it real quick. It's two sexy ass candles and a card. Okay? So the first candle is a psychic moment candle. It says psychic moment on it. This is an intention candle, okay. To conjure a psychic moment into your own life, into your future memoir. I asked for a smell that would smell like kind of like the holidays. So it's vanilla bourbon, but it's really smooth and really soft when it burns. The second candle is something that I wrote all over my book. I posted it on Instagram, like, just randomly, and I got so many dms Saying, please make this merch that. That. I was like, okay, we got to make it merch. And I also feel like it's what the theme of the podcast. The theme of the podcast. Okay. And this candle says, my higher power is finding another woman who is down to fuck some shit up together. Because that is my religion, I believe. And I was just like, on Instagram, being like, someone was like, do you believe in a higher power? And I was like, yeah. Finding another woman who will throw down with you, that'll f anything. So that's merch. And then our third thing is a card for a woman we need to check on. Because I need to be checked on. A lot of we all need to be checked on. And so I want to give a shout out to the cookies who helped me design this on Instagram. The front of the card says, a woman who needs to be checked on is checking on another woman. And inside the card it says, bish you. Okay. And we of course, spell it bish the way I spell it. So let's bring on our very special guest who is hand pouring each one of these goddamn candles. It's Julia Washington. Hi.
Julia Washington
Hi. Thank you for having me. Thank you for collabing with me.
Chelsea Devontes
This is so sexy and fun. So, okay, first off, you are an OG cookie and you are a business owner. You are. You are the thing, like, when they're like, support small female business owners and local communities. Like, that is you. That's me, right?
Julia Washington
That's 100% me. 100% me. So my business is called Prose and Glow, which I pulled to Chelsea and crowdsourced what I should call my business because I couldn't figure out a name on my own. And it's candles, cards, books, and events. And so every candle is inspired by a book and every card is hand painted, whether it's individually or like, I'll make a master copy and then send it off to print because it took too long to do it into them individually.
Chelsea Devontes
You can't be painting every single card. You're a businesswoman. You're busy. You have stuff to do. Come in.
Julia Washington
Correct, Correct. And then we also host books parties, and there's books in my shop as well. So it's all kind of. I don't know if you're sensing a theme.
Chelsea Devontes
It is my favorite theme. One thing I should say is that you can only order it for four weeks. So between November 15th and December 15th, and then orders close. That's it. That's. So it's just a hot month where you can order these candles for yourself, for friends, for Christmas gifts. We've bundled them, so it's like, I think you can get all three of them for a hot 50 bucks, y'all, which is a super sweet deal. It's a very limited draw, very limited sexy drop. And also the way merch works is that you buy the stuff up front. So we just kind of like guessed at what it would be. So if you don't order now, it might sell? I have no idea. But like, we ordered a limited amount, and if you don't put your order in, you might not get that amount. Is that how business works, Julia? Yes, yes. Business.
Julia Washington
Right, that's business. And because I'm hand pouring literally every single candle. So we want to make sure that you get your candle at its full max scent throw by the time Christmas arrives.
Chelsea Devontes
Okay, wait, what do you mean? What is. I think I know what you mean. But tell everyone you mean you say scent throw.
Julia Washington
Yes, yes, yes. Okay. So candles. Candles take about two weeks to cure. I mean, it's literally science, which defies everything of my upbringing because I went to Christian school, so I'm learning science again in adulthood. And so you mix everything together. The wax, the scent. You do it in the way that they tell you to do it. So it's maximizes its scent. In theory, you can start burning a candle 24 hours after you pour it, but if you let it settle or you let it cure. So if you let it cure for two weeks, you get like the maximum scent out of the candle and it will burn better. So we want to make sure that everybody gets quality.
Chelsea Devontes
Which means, like, place your orders November 15th. So Julia is pouring them the next day so that by the time it lands in your hands, it has been cured for two weeks.
Julia Washington
Yes, yes, yes.
Chelsea Devontes
But if you wait until the last second, there might not be any candles left for you. That's what we're saying.
Julia Washington
Yes, yes.
Chelsea Devontes
Okay. I really like that. Also, I'm not like being salesy when I say this is my favorite candle scent of all time. I don't enjoy. When you light a candle, you leave the room for a couple hours, you come back, it's as if there's no scent because it's like so light and soft. Like, I don't like a glossier candle. Okay? I don't like glossier. I don't like candle. If I light a scent, I want to smell it. I want you to fill the room with my. With my beautiful scent. And so I lit your candle. I went and did A thing came back in my office, and I was like, this smells so nice, but it's really smooth. It's not like, sorry, Yankee candles. Not to, like, shit on your empire, but, like, you know, a Yankee Candle is, like. It smells like candy. Like, it's like saccharine.
Julia Washington
It doesn't smell like that.
Christina Lopez
Chelsea, I was not expecting this level of candle slander.
Chelsea Devontes
I know. I'm really coming for a Yankee Candle. Sorry, sorry. To all the kiosks.
Christina Lopez
And glossier, apparently.
Julia Washington
Thank you for appreciating my candle. Everything is clean, though. We use soy wax. We don't use essential oil.
Chelsea Devontes
We.
Julia Washington
It's just me, but I say we, so that way people don't think I'm a sad, lonely lady in the dark doing my business.
Chelsea Devontes
You are not in the dark. You have candles around you.
Julia Washington
I have candles that smells great in my house. Yes, exactly. But everything's clean. So the scent that we use is designed specifically to be burned and to burn clean, so you should not get headaches. Even if it's not burning, it should still have a really, really good scent to it. And again, the whole point is, like, I don't want headaches, you know? And that's a lot of what people struggle with when it comes to scent and candle. So it's like, what's the cleanest way we can do this?
Chelsea Devontes
Oh, I love that. Okay, here's the segment I want to do with you two to celebrate having merch this year and this amazing collab. First, we're selling this card, which is a woman who needs to be checked on, is checking on another woman. Bishuok, who is a woman in your life, real life or pop culture, who you need to check on right now.
Julia Washington
Wait, can I say J.D. vance's wife? Because I'm very concerned.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, for sure. We've all been worried about her for a while. For a while.
Julia Washington
I'm very concerned.
Chelsea Devontes
What got you, like, most recently?
Julia Washington
I just feel like, listen, I am a product of an interracial marriage. Okay?
Chelsea Devontes
Yes.
Julia Washington
So there's a lot of red flags in this marriage for me, for her, because I'm. I'm very concerned about the things that her husband says.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah, he's kind of always saying, like, look, even though she's Indian, she's a really good mom.
Julia Washington
And you're like, yeah, what is that? She's what?
Chelsea Devontes
Or like.
Julia Washington
Or like, I'm so lucky that my wife watches the kids while I go to church. What? I'm. I mean. Ma'am, are you okay? Do we need to help you, because I can help you do that.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah, we can throw candles at. They're heavy. They are. Listen, if you don't want to gift a candle, throw one at your enemy. Throw one at J.D. vance's tour bus. Okay. Christina, who is a woman you need to check on.
Christina Lopez
I'm gonna say Cynthia Erivo for two reasons. One is the kind of crash out she had over the fan poster that somebody made of the Wicked poster where they changed, like, you know, the hat on her head, and she felt like they were erasing her. And then the very real erasure that's happening on the press tour where a lot of reporters are just directing questions to Ariana Grande in front of Cynthia, where they're doing, like, interviews together. And so, yeah, I just want to make sure Cynthia is okay. She's one of our great Broadway divas that, you know, is of our generation, so, you know, just kind of want to check in on her. This is, like, a really big press tour. Just make sure Cynthia's doing it right.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah, yeah. I think I do anticipate a couple more Cynthia crashes, but I'm also, like, a little happy for her. I like. I like that she's like, you know what? I'm going to. I'm going to say every single thing I feel, and I'm not going to be like, PR about it. Like, that makes it fun as well.
Christina Lopez
She did eventually say was like, I should have just talked to a friend about the poster.
Chelsea Devontes
And that is correct.
Christina Lopez
That is correct.
Chelsea Devontes
But do I believe that's going to continue for the rest of the press tour? Do we think she's going to talk to a friend?
Christina Lopez
No. Yeah. You know, if somebody sent her the card, she would get that one on one that she needs. So I'm just saying.
Chelsea Devontes
Okay, Christine, I think you need to send Cynthia Riva a merch card. It could be a budding friendship. I can see a friendship here. Okay. The woman I need to be checked on, who absolutely is like you, I do not need to be checked on, which is why I am forcefully checking on her is Ashley from Love is Blind, who married Tyler because she stood by Tyler's side and just. She gave such a better defense of his actions than he did. And I'm like, Ashley, you got. That's gotta be flipped. The words coming out of his mouth have to make sense. And then you can be like, I'm staying with him. But instead, you made it make sense. And I just. I know, I know. She's gonna. She's gonna white knuckle it for as long as she can. I know she's like, I made this choice, and I love love, and I. I needed to be married, and I am, and I. I want to send her a card, and then I want to throw one at Tyler's face. Okay, so then we have our psychic moment candle. So I am very. I know I like make fun of woo woo stuff on this podcast because I was raised in it, but I am still very woo woo about my candles. And with this psychic moment intention candle, what I want is for every time you light the candle to set an intention of something you want to bring into your life. Because this is what I do when I light candles. And then maybe you'll be having your own psychic moment. And so I make a wish, I light the candle, and then every single time I blow out the candle, I make another wish. Why not? Why not? You know what? It's there. Every day is your birthday. Make a wish on a candle. So my question for you is, what psychic moment are you hoping to have this year in your life?
Julia Washington
I'm hoping for a big move.
Chelsea Devontes
Ooh, like a physical move or just, like, an emotional move?
Julia Washington
I will take either.
Chelsea Devontes
Oh, we love that. She's ready. She's opening her arms. She's ready to go with the wind.
Christina Lopez
Yes.
Julia Washington
And I've never been a go with the wind kind of person. I come off easygoing, but I have a death club clutch on control of my life, and so I'm, like, working really hard to release that clutch, and I just feel like that's we're doing that in 2025.
Christina Lopez
I love that.
Chelsea Devontes
I hate to be boring, because mine's about work, and it always is. But for this past, like, six months have sort of started, like, six different creative endeavors, and I have, like, a bag of 12. I need a psychic moment for, like, which one? I am just supposed to stand there and push because I want them all. Okay, you know what? That's my psychic moment. Make them all happen. And if not, I guess give me some guidance.
Christina Lopez
I love that.
Chelsea Devontes
Okay, Christina, what do you think?
Christina Lopez
Okay, well, I am also very wooey. I actually have, like, a little tarot candle right here that is about creating the life I want. Because you already have as the magician. You have everything in your power, which I think actually kind of speaks to what you were saying, Chelsea. But I think for me, I've been thinking a lot lately. I turned 38 in July. I'm gonna turn, like 40 is right there, and I'm starting. Yeah. Yeah.
Chelsea Devontes
Is she winking at you?
Christina Lopez
Yeah, yeah, she's winking at me. And I'm like, what are the cycles that I want to break and, like, be aware of? And also, you know, the aspects of myself that I want to nourish and, like, as part of the garden. And I don't know if there's a very clear intention about that, but I think it's more of just solidifying the parts of me that I'm still working on versus the parts of me that I think are kind of already there and should be nurtured a little bit more and are actually good for me. So I think it's a little bit more of like a psychic moment of self acceptance and, like, working shit out, I guess.
Chelsea Devontes
I love that you need a psychic moment where it's like, christina, you're perfect. Yeah, let it go.
Christina Lopez
Probably. That's probably the answer, Chelsea.
Chelsea Devontes
I like that. Well, listen, I can do that to you on the podcast every day. So you've done it. Your intention candle has already worked. Okay, last question. So the final candle is. And this is. This is the one. I love both scents, to be honest. They're because I requested them, so I love them. This one is. It's just the scents I fell in love with originally when I ordered a candle from Julia's shop. And this candle says, my higher power is fin finding another woman who is down to some up together. So this is a candle you give to your bestie. You put it on your shelf to ward away husbanders, loser spirits, trifling bosses. This can be for you. This could also be the perfect gift to give to your bestie. So who are you giving your candle to, hypothetically, this week? In your real life or pop culture, who is the woman where you're like, yeah, she's down to fuck some shit up together.
Julia Washington
I recently made a new friend, like, two years ago, so it's still fairly new.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah, yeah.
Julia Washington
Her name is Sarah George. Full naming her because. Because she is 100% embodying this recently for me, because when I decided to go into business, she was like, gassing me up, like, yeah, girl, you got this. Like, this is gonna be amazing. Comes to every event. And then when she started doing work, like, all of her shit's been amazing. So then we've combined forces, and now we're like, look out, 20, 25, these hoes are in town. It's going to be amazing.
Chelsea Devontes
I. It's the theme of the podcast. Theme of. I love that. I love that so much. Okay, Christina, who is your Candle going to. Okay.
Christina Lopez
So I found out a couple days ago that Ava Longoria actually partially funded John Wick, like the make to make for them to be able to make the franchise John Wicked. And I had no idea. Ava also is like, very politically active. And I just have noticed over the like, 20 years since desperate Housewives iconic show, which I kind of been meaning to revisit how she leverages her celebrity and her power for both those causes, but also to make, you know, Latino centric shows and like, what she puts her name on to executive produce. And so, like, I definitely think she'd be down to fuck some shit up and maybe make like a female John Wick franchise.
Julia Washington
That would be amazing.
Chelsea Devontes
A dream. I love that. That reminds me, I just learned about how Lucille Ball is the reason Star Trek got a chance.
Christina Lopez
Yes.
Chelsea Devontes
Where she's like, you better make this show. And when they said no, she forced them to. Okay, I love that. My answer. There's so many women I could give this candle to. There's a few I would throw it at, let's be honest. But who I'm giving it to, it does have to be my mom T. Mom Z. Because she flew in for my husband's movie premiere and she could never. She couldn't make it to any of the other movie stuff. And. And Yasser even wanted to give her like a little cameo and she couldn't make it. So he named Susan Sarandon's character after her and gave Susan a blonde wig. So my mom comes in for the premiere. It's like night of her life. And, you know, we're just kind of like linked up all night because, like, Yasser's busy doing stuff. And we ended up at this Italian restaurant at like 2 in the morning. All of us did like the. The cast and blah, blah. And we both had had a lot. We'd had a lot of drinks. We get to this Italian restaurant where they have espresso martinis. And so my mom's like, we'll take two. And at two in the morning, like, you shouldn't have an espresso martini. Like, that's not. When you order it. You know what I mean? You want the espresso to keep you awake. And so we get these espresso martinis. And I. I have nurtured this little voice in the back of my head that comes up in moments like these and goes, don't drink it. Don't do it. Drink some water. And I was listening, right? So I drank water. I didn't drink mine. And my mom goes, you're not gonna drink that. I want that. And I was like, well, we're leaving. And she's like, I think I need that. And so I said, sir, can we have a styrofoam cup for water? And he gave it to us. And then I poured this reciprocating in the styrofoam cup. I covered it, put it into my purse, walked out in the night, gave it to my mom. So anyways, if there is another woman who is down to fuck some shit up together, it is the OG T mom Z who taught me to take your drink to go. Which is literal jokes I've written into scripts. And then like nights like last night, I'm like, we are trash. We are amazing trash.
Julia Washington
I love that story.
Chelsea Devontes
So that's who gets the candle.
Julia Washington
That's the best.
Chelsea Devontes
Okay, so to just plug all the info again, you can order the candles right now and the card, they are linked in the show notes. You can order them individually or as a bundle. Save some money. Okay, let's dive back into the episode. That was very fun. I very much needed those psychic moments. Women we need to check in on segments. I almost want to do it weekly.
Christina Lopez
Yes, I think we. Well, I mean, we could bring it up on the next cookie jar. Maybe we just make that a cookie jar segment each time.
Chelsea Devontes
A cookie jar segment. I like that. I like that. Okay, so now let's discuss JoJo's memoir. This is JoAnna JoJo Levesque's memoir. We covered it, you know, on the podcast a couple months ago. Here's some updates. I think I had really high hopes. Like, I really was just so excited. Which also kind of goes into it. But also, two things in the book ended up undoing the rest of the book for me personally, which was leaving out the guy being drunk and on drugs when he crashed the car that also killed her best friend. And the stuff on the Dream center, which I'll get to in a second. But I did see some comments being like, wait, this book isn't like. I saw some comments on Facebook being like, JoJo was marketed to black women and we did listen to her. And I still enjoyed the book. And I'm like, yes, you can absolutely still enjoy the book. I just had a couple criticisms. Now. I had one thing I was wrong about, which is that I was really Annoyed that Drake and her had DMed just given what we know about Drake now. But in the context of that, JoJo was rewriting Drake's song, so it makes sense for him to be like, great song. And their age gap at that point was actually quite small. It was like four or five years. I was like, ugh, stop DMing people, Drake. Because, you know, he'd be DMing a lot of women. I think he maybe shouldn't.
Christina Lopez
Right.
Chelsea Devontes
But in that context, in that moment, it wasn't actually, like, a shitty thing. So I want to issue a correction.
Christina Lopez
Okay.
Chelsea Devontes
Amend an amendment. But I want to counter that and say we are about to drop an episode for Thanksgiving for subscribers only. Because on the holidays, you often need a new podcast episode. And that's when podcasts like, don't drop episodes. We covered Armie Hammer's mom's book. It is one of the longest recordings we've done in a long time. But all I wanna say is that when we read JoJo's book, and I was like, this Dream center is giving me the squirmies. Like, it's made. I'm getting the ick. I opened Drew Hammer's book, and guess who funded and teaches and runs and loves the Dream Center. It is Armie Hammer's mother, who also is like, my baby boy didn't do no wrong. Hashtag MeToo sucks. No, really. She actually writes in the book NotUsAll, which really should have been, like, not all of us or, you know, what, not have typed it in any way. But that's where she stands. So I'm just saying you have a lot to look forward to. Did you freak out at that Dream center thing when I was like, oh, my God. Because I feel like it was just me and Chris being like, I cannot believe I have found the Dream center in two goddamn memoirs running amok.
Christina Lopez
Yeah. I'll be interested in seeing if there are more references coming out about it in upcoming memoirs that we might visit or if there's something that we missed retroactively. I feel that same way when we hit that Ryan O'Neal moment in Connie's memoir. Cause there's just like, what? This is happening again? Like, we just talked about this, and.
Chelsea Devontes
If we hadn't just read Tatum's memoir, I would have been like, look at Connie. Fucking hell. Yeah. And instead I was like, not him.
Christina Lopez
Yeah. Yeah. So I wonder how it's gonna paint, you know, things going forward for sure. Especially from a lot of those millennial memoirs that are probably be coming out over the Next couple years. Yeah, yeah. Oh, God.
Chelsea Devontes
And the amount of hillsong that got to Justin Bieber and other ways. Maybe the dream center is coming back up. Okay, another pivot. Bethany Joy Lenz's memoir. Did you see one of the comments in the chat that one of the cookies got the audiobook? And they're like, so this is secondhand. I'm trusting a cookie journalist. But she was like, it is like an SNL audition for impersonations. Like, everyone gets a voice, everyone gets an accent. Everyone gets like a demeanor.
Christina Lopez
No.
Chelsea Devontes
And you know, there's like 9,000 cult members in that house.
Christina Lopez
And so it's like a one woman show. It's like listening to a one woman show. Like my neighbor, you know, Donnie from around the corner.
Chelsea Devontes
Hey, Bethany, how you doing?
Christina Lopez
Yeah.
Chelsea Devontes
Yes. Yeah. Like, I'm Les the cult leader. And I'm Mimi Ann, the wife. Like, it makes me want to get the audiobook, but also, I can't go that far. But if someone else listened to the audiobook, get in the chat, because it's really making me laugh. I'm just so curious how far. And also, she's an amazing actress, so I'm so curious. The line, it rides because. Because I'll tell you someone who did accents in their book, and it is so messed up, I don't understand how it's not a more popular talking point. And it's gonna break your heart when I say it, everyone, so get ready. Ronan Farrow.
Christina Lopez
No. What did he do?
Chelsea Devontes
Yes, all of them. All the accents he's doing. He's doing a character. And it's like, but you're also like, bro, you're a journalist. Like Bethany Joy Lynns. I'm like, you know, listen, she wants to play Beauty and Beauty and the Beast, like, she's an actress, blah, blah, blah.
Christina Lopez
It's the latter, Ronan.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah. Like. Like, when did you take a accent class? And like. And why? Mostly why?
Christina Lopez
Well, and also considering the material he was covering, I think it's a distraction. It's a distraction from. From the importance of which one? Yeah. Oh, my God.
Chelsea Devontes
And you can find his on YouTube. So his are out and about. And you know what? We might have to play one.
Christina Lopez
Yeah.
Perez said that she urged Chiora to speak by describing her own experience of going public about her assault. I told her I used to tread water for years. It's fucking exhausting. And maybe speaking out, that's your lifeboat. Grab on and get out. Perez recalled. You can call me Anna, said the voice on the other end of the line. In a refined European accent. He was doing big business. I mean, to some cool shit, some dark stuff.
Chelsea Devontes
Okay. A couple other, not necessarily corrections, but like additions. So if you are following the accounts, the Patreon, you now know this in case you're not. When we read the book, I was mad. There was only one reference to her vampire title, because it's such a great title. But I was like this. Where is this? So several cookies. But the first one I saw that I saved to talk about in this episode pointed this out. So Rachel posted, the characters names in Bethany's book come from Bram Stoker's Dracula. So Jonathan Harker in that book is the main protagonist. His fiance, Mina Murray Abe could be a reference to Abraham Van Helsing in the novel. And since Harker shares the same first name as Jonathan Jackson, Mina, his wife, and the title mentions vampires, this has to be deliberate. This also, when I was reading the book, I was like, wow, Harker is such a unique and different and weirdly specific name. And I really liked it. Cause I thought it very much describes the character on the page. But to realize this is where it came from is much cooler. What do you think?
Christina Lopez
I think it would have helped a little bit if she had informed readers of that in the book.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah. Or nodded harder, like, walk us half the way there so that you don't have to have read the book and remembered all the names to get that reference right.
Christina Lopez
Yes, exactly. But maybe it wasn't put that explicitly because she didn't want to make a direct line so that it would be as easy to point out for legal reasons, perhaps, about who was who.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah. Because it is Jonathan Harker. So maybe that one was tricky. But otherwise, I mean, I did some weird name stuff in my book too, where I'm like, there are certain Easter eggs in there, if you really, really, really, really want to know. But like, I mean, listen, they're mostly just for me and friends, but so I get that. Okay. Oh, and then here's the bummer one. So in our monthly Zoom book club, we were talking more about those sort of allegations that, like, Bethany's conservatism was at the root of this drama. Specifically conservatism that is like anti LGBTQIA and the trans community. And in the back of the book, she really takes a long time to thank this Pastor Tim Keller, who was also someone that the cult leader Les had mentioned, like, knowing and working with. It turned out to be a lie, but it was something that helped her trust him. So in the back of the book, she's like, I want to, like, go back and think like, the real pastor who changed my life. But then in book club, we have, I'm going to say a fundamentalist expert. She, who I was like, hey, can I just ask you, like, is Tim Keller known for being a good dude? And she's like, oh, he's like, known for being anti LGBTQIA and like, anti trans. And he's like, he's like a stepping stone out of the fundamentalist community. So he's a lot. He's a good way. A lot of people get free.
Christina Lopez
Okay.
Chelsea Devontes
But then he stops. But then he stops and is like. And it ends here. And actually, some people should not be free. So I thought that was pretty damning evidence.
Christina Lopez
Oh, man.
Chelsea Devontes
I know. A bummer. A real bummer. Okay, well, let's go on to something fun. So a lot of people were trying to figure out who the fuckboy baseball player that had a secret family that Mary Bonet of Selling Sunset found out was not her boyfriend, but in fact a married man from watching a Major League baseball game. When the camera panned to his family that he told her did not exist. So people were trying to figure it out. A few people got there. I really want to shout out Loretta and Trisha.
Christina Lopez
Yes.
Chelsea Devontes
Loretta found an entire timeline, including an Instagram post of Mary and her son meeting this guy. And this post is dated before she would have moved to LA to meet Jason, which matches her timeline. And then Trisha wrote, hear me out, Mary Bonet mystery baseball player Chad Curtis. He only played in Major League Baseball from 1998 to 2001. In that time, he played for like six different teams. He was married to his wife since 1990 and he has six kids. And he's from Indiana, which is where she was from. And here's the kicker. He is also a pedophile. And they have since. He has since divorced that wife. He is a court litigated pedophile. And. And everyone thinks that this is the mystery man. What do you think?
Julia Washington
I remember trying.
Christina Lopez
I do remember trying to figure it out during the recording and I was asking, like, chat GPT to cross reference a bunch of things that I couldn't. I couldn't get it there. So I'm glad that.
Chelsea Devontes
But you tried.
Christina Lopez
Yes. So I'm glad that the cookies were on the case. And. Wow. We could, like, we could use this as such a force for good too, as well as gossip. A force for good and gossip. That's. That's what we got on Our team.
Chelsea Devontes
We could definitely start some sort of agency that would start for good and surely turn bad in, like, a month or two. But we could do it.
Christina Lopez
Yes.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah. I also saw some really fun messages where people pulled in their partners who loved sports, and we had this, like, great, like, cross cultural, like, yes. Celebrity memoir, pop culture and sports, like, couples coming together to solve the mystery. So that was very fun. So we are recording this three days after the election. This episode will come out, like, a week. Wait a minute.
Christina Lopez
It'll come out exactly a week after the election?
Chelsea Devontes
Yes. Okay, I listen. We're in it. We're in it and we're all here. But here's the thing. We are here together. And Christina, you found. And I found. We all found. There were some really beautiful messages in the chat post election that did, like, brighten my day. And so I think we should pass them on in case they can brighten yours.
Christina Lopez
Yes. One of them was from Kirsten, and it came after our Kamala episode, and we were having that discussion within the episode about people who work for change inside systems and people who kind of take the approach to be, like, rebel against those systems and how we kind of need both. So Kirsten actually highlighted this following comment. There are four types of social activists that come from Bill Moyers doing democracy. I love this model. Essentially, there are rebels, citizens, change agents, and reformers. All are needed for social change and reflect how different people show up in movements. For some, it is attending protests, others it's bringing food. Some quote, change from within systems, end quote. And others help strategize and connect the dots. Recognizing the value of all roles helps invite more people into the conversation. And then she gives us a link that we'll provide in the show notes that kind of dives into more details about it. But I love that because I think coming out of this election, I have been thinking about how I can participate within communities, whether it's the digital community that we have over at the Cookies or in my real communities that I can really engage and help, like my LGBTQ community, which I think is going to be going through a lot in the next four years. And so how I can reinvest that anger or despair into transmuting it into something positive and that could benefit and uplift and have that more direct connection with communities. So that's. That was. I was really excited for that.
Chelsea Devontes
I really loved that part, too. I loved when our guests said it, and I loved that that cookie, like, dropped the link to read more about it, because especially in that part of the episode we were talking about, like, Kamala changing a system from the inside, like, becoming the DA and how much pushback she got from people being like, don't be a D.A. you know, like, do something else. But that how, like, all. There's just so many different things needed to make massive amounts of change. So it's so inspiring to be like, okay, so, like, which is gonna be your way. Some people it's giving their money, and for some people, it's speaking. And for some people, it's like, sneaking through the door and letting others in. And it's like, I do believe we need all those.
Christina Lopez
Or, yeah, just making food for your neighbor because, like, they can't aff, you know, to eat that week or the food bank is too far, you know, and sharing resources that way. And that coming less from, you know, a scarcity mindset and more from a communal based society could lead to more positive change instead of division. But you have to have the reserve for that. I can see if people were, like, wiped out and not will and, like, honestly want to take themselves out of that whole conversation because we've asked too much of them.
Chelsea Devontes
Anyone who's like, wiped out, you got to put. You got to put the airline. You got to put your mask on first and then help others, like, replenish. Replenish. Okay, what was that last comment that you highlighted?
Christina Lopez
Okay, so this next one is from Kara, and it says, I could not for the life of me get the Patreon to work yesterday. This was on election day, and Chisco is coming in here to read your messages, and they've been such a bomb, I haven't been able to cry yet. Mostly scream, singing, and defiantly stomping around my neighborhood on fuck you walks. Has anyone moved into the rewrite at dawn stage of grief yet? Because. Beep, beep, bitch. I'm outside. That's it.
Chelsea Devontes
Beep, beep, bitch. I'm outside too. It's hex time, motherfuckers. Who are we hexing? We hex at dawn. Christina. I've known this about myself, but it's really funny to go through so much therapy and really know it about yourself. But in dark times, all of a sudden, I'm like, I'm ready to fucking go. I'm just like, we out here, we out here, we out here. I know I will have my cry about it crash phase, but my instant reaction is always like, beep, beep, beep, beep. Get in. Vroom, vroom. I'm gonna tell a little story I shared on my Instagram, but I. So, So a couple of years ago, I was at my niece's birthday party and we drove, we were like on this huge cross country road trip. And her birthday party, she was seven and she's homeschooled. And so they have this one curriculum they follow. And that means like, all of her friends who are at the party are from like all across town, like in the area, and they're all united via homeschool, but they're like, they have almost nothing in common. So it was a party where like all the parents are like, would never find themselves under the same open park gazebo for a different occasion. And you know, so we were at this party. I'm fucking raging. It's a child's party. I'm raging. No, you know, I'm just standing, standing there and like, I'm. This is. The amount of, this is, this is how different the people were at this party. And I'm not like saying all of them. I'm saying like, we were all different in our own ways. But my niece somehow started calling me Uncle Chelsea, which I found hilarious. And I made it stick. And we call, we call Yasser, Auntie Yasser.
Christina Lopez
Oh my God, that actually fits him. I don't know. He has like auntie energy.
Chelsea Devontes
He does. And I was like, I think it's, I think it's funny to. To fuck with gender pronouns Early. You know what I mean? Like, you're a drag queen. Non binary Early. Like that.
Christina Lopez
Yeah, come on.
Chelsea Devontes
That's funny to me. And I'm like. And it's whatever. But so anyways, one of the parents heard them calling me Uncle Chelsea and like, was upset in a way of like, are you allowed to use the bathroom at this park that actually didn't have bathrooms? Like, but like, they were reacting me in such an insane wow. And obviously at that point, I'm not telling him about the truth. I'm fucking doubling down. Like, let's talk it out, my friend. But there was this other woman there and she's like, you know, when I'm overwhelmed and when I think I can't affect change, I just try and focus on my community and I try and focus on what's in front of me. And like these 20 people, these 20 people at this like homeschooled party and like, how can I make it better? And she's like, and this is why I want to give you some lotion that I make from acorns. And like, don't trust the hospitals. And I was like, oh, so you and I are also different.
Christina Lopez
But.
Chelsea Devontes
But I think about her all the time. I'm like, okay, what's right in front of me, who's next door, who's in my phone? And this community, I put a lot of time into it because it's a job. And so this is my community, who I'm talking to and thinking about here. And it was really inspiring.
Christina Lopez
Yeah, it really was. There were so many messages in the friendship chat. And if you're looking for support, you're feeling alone this time because of where you live. Maybe you live in a better state and things are feeling kind of bleak. You can find not only community there, there is also a meetup channel, so you could actually make that community go from virtual to real life. So I think that's what we're talking about here is like, companionship. We have a group of people here that's welcoming and open and ready to work together. And I think it'll be really interesting to see how the cookies will continue to come together over the years and help and support each other.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah. And just to tag that beautiful message, come with kindness, thoughtfulness, and humor, or I will kick your ass out. I got moderating, I got moderator features. You will be removed because everyone here is going to be safe. Listen, no one has ever come uncorrect unless it is to me, which is funny, but no one has ever come uncorrect to someone else in this community or I would have booted them. It's never happened, but knock on wood, let's see. You know, but listen, I got the moderating capabilities, and so does Christina and so does Jordan. Okay, what are we up to? I feel like we tease a lot of things, but everything takes so long to work on that. You're like, what about that thing I heard about 10 episodes ago? And you're like, we're still working on it. So first I just want to say, what are you laughing at?
Christina Lopez
Because you do be mentioning stuff in episodes and that it's like, wait, when are we actually going to get to that?
Chelsea Devontes
I know, I know, I know.
Christina Lopez
Well, soft launch. Use the podcast. The soft launch. A lot of.
Chelsea Devontes
Oh, my God. Ibisoft launching all the time. I really do. But it's. I don't know. It's not a soft launch. Like, I'm literally. I have. Okay, here's something to know about.
Christina Lopez
I'm like, I gotta add this agenda item.
Chelsea Devontes
No, you're. Yeah. From listening to the episode. I have. I am currently staring at 1212 whiteboards. In my office. That's how many I needed. They're peel and stick. They're supposed to come off. Haven't tried yet. I have 12 whiteboards filled to the brim. So it's not that I'm like soft launching. It's like, okay, soft launches. When you're like, oh, we're like kind of like, you know, we're giving hand jobs. You know what I mean? But like, it's not official. Like, I'm giving hand jobs to 12 whiteboards over here. And I do expect marriage from all of them. It's just taking a while. Okay. Sometimes it takes a long time.
Christina Lopez
You gotta really massage it.
Chelsea Devontes
You gotta really massage it. But no, truly, like, all these projects, like, they just. Everything takes a long time. Not to mention I have another job, then that's the one that pays my bills. Like, that one comes first, so all this gotta come second. Okay. We're going into our fifth year, so it's not like we're at year five, but I will hit five years of attempting to make this podcast in. In February on Valentine's Day. So five years for me personally, and then from our launch, you know, October. But we're going into our fifth year and we are at 5 million downloads and we're gonna celebrate it a fish. A fish when the counter hits exactly 5 million. But we are so close. And that feels really cool to say. I'm sure, like, Dax Shepard is like, haha, loser. But for me, that seems amazing.
Christina Lopez
Yeah, I think it is something to pat yourself on the back for. I've been a part of a lot.
Chelsea Devontes
Of podcasts that like ourselves on the back.
Christina Lopez
I mean, I think I don't want to take credit for four and a half of those years, but, you know.
Chelsea Devontes
Okay, but definitely take credit for the entire last year and like all of the growth in beauty.
Christina Lopez
Yeah, yeah, I'll take that to heart. For sure.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah, I love that.
Christina Lopez
Yeah.
Chelsea Devontes
Okay, so let's talk about these other. Should I keep calling them hand jobs or should I go back to whiteboards? Okay, so a few things are happening. We've been working on this behind the bangs writing community that is actually going to debut on December 27th. If you are like, what are you talking about? I want to be a writer. I want to be a creator. I want to have community. It's coming. Sign up for the newsletter, listen to the podcast. It'll come. So we've been working on that. We are working on, like, actual Patreon things and episode features and things to add. And Jordan, our Executive producer is working on an entire, like, brand refresh. And the whole reason we changed our name to Glamorous Trash is so that it could be a larger umbrella for, like, multiple other things we want to create and do with this community and with our time and efforts and financial resources. And then Christina's been working on this, like, actual, like, podcast refresh where, like, there might be a Celine Dion video coming to you. If you saw it on tour, you were. You were one of the lucky ones. But there might be a way other people can see it. We'll see. I know I teased a show with Molly Quinn. That one's been the hardest to get going for a multitude of reasons. So it might stay in the soft launch stage for longer than we'd hope, but who knows? Maybe. I don't know. Maybe not. Maybe. Maybe it'll soft launch into darkness. Maybe it will soft launch into the most beautiful marriage you've ever seen. We. We will know more soon. We're working towards it.
Christina Lopez
Would you say that's cutting? Yes, that is correct. But we're working towards it. So I feel really.
Chelsea Devontes
We are working towards it.
Christina Lopez
I feel really confident about it.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah. Okay. Some good news I've never said, which is that I sold a TV show this.
Christina Lopez
Congratulations.
Chelsea Devontes
My dream TV show. If you read the book, you will know what show it is. Yeah, it's one of my dream shows. I'm currently turning in the outline, so it's hard to. If you're not in TV. But basically there's like 19 steps to getting a show to air, and I'm in the middle. And it's really amazing. It's really wonderful. I've been really happy. And I haven't shared it, just. Cause it just never feels like the right time. But you gotta celebrate.
Christina Lopez
Part of the 19 steps is like, it looks like it could go and then something happens, and it looks like it could go and then something happens. And it is such the endemic thing about Hollywood. So it's like, it's almost scared to say it out loud because it's like, then it never happens or like, people will ask you about it because he talked about it. But I think there is space to have that joy, you know what I mean? And you got a step further than other people who are pitching a million ideas in this town are not getting to. And so it is a toss for celebration. We've talked a lot of this podcast about why everything in Hollywood is kind of messed up right now. And so it is a moment to just kind of celebrate it. Like, hey, at least we got this far, 100%.
Chelsea Devontes
And. And you know, stories, they're always important, but especially with what is happening right now, I'm really thinking, I'm looking towards the future, wondering, like, what art will shape culture? What stories are we going to allow to be told in society? And how do you be a part of it? How do you make sure the stories you want told are getting told? Oh my God. So someone messaged me on Instagram because I also started a dog bag line to help clean up fashion waste.
Christina Lopez
That is a whiteboard.
Chelsea Devontes
I'm real. You're like, haha, she joking. I'm not joking. I did start it and I'm pretty far down the line.
Christina Lopez
It has an Instagram account. She's pretty far down the line.
Chelsea Devontes
It has an Instagram. I made all the. I made all the designs. Am I a designer? No. I took a. I am almost graduated from a business course I've been taking to make these dog bags. Not because I want to make dog bags, but because they're going to be made from recycled textiles and plastic bottles so that each dog bag purchase helps clean up the earth. And then what? I get my perfect dog travel bag that literally does not exist on the market. Because if it does, I just would have bought that and I would not have taken a business class.
Christina Lopez
But it's been so helpful, that course, like in, in terms of also the glamorous trust stuff. So, like, I feel like I'm even benefiting.
Chelsea Devontes
I know.
Christina Lopez
So thank you.
Chelsea Devontes
Okay. I love that. I love that take. And yeah, I don't know, I think this election too, I was really like, okay, we're like fully in a capitalist society. If you can make a capitalist gain in order to give jobs to single moms, veterans, like female felons, people who are not given care in a company that is thriving because it's also cleaning up waste. That's something I can work for and I'm happy to fail if I fail. That's okay. I think it's a beautiful goal to have. But look at me complimenting my goal. So I got this DM saying like, oh, like, how can we become micro investors? And the truth is that if you are a member of the Patreon or you subscribe on Apple, you already are. Because we have been pushing and learning and growing to monetize the podcast. And those profits go back into the show in addition to, like, paying for everyone who, like, helps us make the podcast. And I just shot a pilot that I wrote and directed and Jordan Moncada produced it and we had the money for it because I sold a book and have this podcast and was able to film something independently on my own terms that we will now get to take to market. And that has been. I've only ever made short films, Christina, for like $5. Like, I've only ever been able to write a film that happens in a shitty apartment that doesn't have art on the walls because that's where I live. Like, that's been it for me. So to independently do something that had a real set took me this long, but I did it and I got to do it in part because of, like, this community. So if you want to be an investor in anything we're talking about, just join the Patreon because then at least you get free shit for your investment.
Christina Lopez
I think you should also. We'll share one of your short films in the show notes so that people could see what they're, you know, what they can help elevate.
Chelsea Devontes
You can see what you're investing in.
Christina Lopez
I love that short film that you have as, like the woman who's checking. Yeah, I was like, I was watching it, like, probably a couple months ago. I was like, oh, yeah, I should watch. You know, I should be more familiar with your work outside of the podcast. And it was fun. I loved it. So I think we should share it with the cookies in the show notes so that they could see, like, you know, it's something, you know, to invest in and you get some good content out of it.
Chelsea Devontes
That is the best producer move ever. It's also only three minutes, so don't worry, we're not hoisting a 13 minute.
Christina Lopez
But it's deeply relatable, I think, to a lot of women I know, at least.
Chelsea Devontes
Thank you. You know, I actually. So if you really, really, really listen to the podcast, last year you heard me talk about how I released our backlog of episodes because this film, I was supposed to do a feature length film on, like, like the. The reason I need this film to get made is so that I can tell the story of what happened last year, which I cannot. It is the juiciest, craziest, most fucked up story. It includes celebrities. You're going to lose your mind that are a part of this, and I can't tell it until the film happens. It has taken me entire year to be in a place where it is now maybe happening again. And it is the feature film version of that three minute short you're talking.
Christina Lopez
Oh, fascinating. Okay, well, there you go. Get in on the ground floor people.
Chelsea Devontes
I love that you watched that also. You have such a great database of knowledge. That is why I love seeing what you post in the Patreon. You are the mayor of Patreon. You have the best chats, the best articles, your TikTok curation. Dare I say, they are everything. So this makes sense. This makes sense. You're very. You're very.
Christina Lopez
Yeah, it feels like a little bit of an office. You know what I mean? Like, I think I. I was glad I didn't have to go into an office on election day, I'll tell you that much. But I do.
Chelsea Devontes
And for everyone who did, we are sending you so much love. Oh, my God. One of the cookies. I'll do this nameless, but this must be shared. She said in 2016, when Hillary lost, a Trump supporter she worked with hugged her, which. Okay. And then wrote a Facebook post about hugging a Clinton supporter and was like, I did it. And she had to continue to work with that person. And to that I say we hex at dawn.
Christina Lopez
Yes.
Chelsea Devontes
Beep beep, bitch. We outside. We gotta go revisit that person in 2024 and be like, like, we didn't like that.
Christina Lopez
Yeah, it's a woman we need to check in on. But I think that, yeah, I consider it like our water cooler for like, people who might just work from home, maybe, or like, you know, people who are struggling to find friends that are interested in the same stuff that they are. You know, we're nerding out about Agatha all along over there. We're nerding out about Love is Blind. We have our threads going on about Dancing with the Stars. There are book recommendations, endless book recommendations.
Chelsea Devontes
Oh, my God, the book recommendations. I. I can never participate. Cause I'm reading so many books for this podcast. But I watched the books go by and I longingly am like, I want to read that.
Christina Lopez
Yeah. And they'll be like, tangentially related to stuff that we talk about on the show to give all of us a deep understanding of what was going on. So, yeah, I. It really is like a fun little place, little garden to be in in this desert that we're about to come up on.
Chelsea Devontes
Come on over and you know, aina your fucking garden if you feel like it. And if not, you know, just listening is nice. Leaving a review is nice. Following is nice. Or get yourself some goddamn merch. It's all linked and we love you all so much. Okay, so let's go into our very last segment, which is I want to thank the Many medical professionals and just people who be knowing stuff, letting me know that Stevie Nicks could have been at that plastic surgeon's office because she wanted, like, actual care for her nose cartilage. And I did learn a lesson where you're like, I should have known this, but. Which is that plastic surgeons do so much more than just vanity care. And I think I. I think I knew that in some situations, but I. I didn't think. I thought, like, if you were having nose issues, that's who you'd end up with. I thought you would end up at the nose. The sinus doctor.
Christina Lopez
Like, no, I mean, like, you could theoretically go to an ear, nose, and throat doctor. That's not a plastic surgeon.
Chelsea Devontes
That's what I thought. Like, I thought, like, oh, you would be there if you were struggling, but it's like, no, you could at a plastic surgeon's office. So that's probably where she got the information about her nose. Not that Stevie Nicks was looking for a nose job, which I did need to know that. Did you need to know? I needed to know that Stevie Nicks wasn't getting a nose job for some reason. What did you think?
Christina Lopez
I did, like, do a cursory search about it, but nothing definitive came up. And, like, I've watched enough Grey's Anatomy where I should have known that it was for a legit reason and not necessarily just for plastic surgery. But I think there is some fun in leaving some conjecture, like, that's a little harmless, that that's how people talk about celebrities, you know, and then we do yield answers like the ones that we got, and we do amend those. So this is what this says for.
Chelsea Devontes
We're stating here. She could have been there for a different reason. Quickly, I will recommend the Anatomy of Lies documentary about that Grey's Anatomy writer. It's really good. It's horrifying. My headline is that I knew a lot of that and knew. I was like, oh, I know. It's in this documentary. No, no, no. The headline is that she did so much worse than was ever reported. Like, the Hollywood stuff is, like, the. The smallest part of what she did.
Christina Lopez
Yeah. Apparently she's still kind of, you know, deceiving people.
Chelsea Devontes
She's around. She's posting. She is posting pictures of those kids being like, I want to be their mom again. And you're like, watch the documentary. You can't. You can't be.
Christina Lopez
Oh, real quick. I do want to say, like, if you have someone whose music you want us to find the memoir in, please let Us know, by saying something on the Patreon or emailing us at hello, glamorous trash dot com.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah, and I did see someone say Sheryl Crow.
Christina Lopez
Yes, Sheryl Crow. We got a pitch for Lady Gaga and. Or Chapelroone, you know, for someone to talk about it. Like, somebody pitching them as a guest to talk about it. So I think there's a lot of, you know, avenues that can go. We can go down. The one thing I was actually interested is, like, maybe the music and the memoir. If we did, like, a Mariah Carey episode that highlighted her music and like, oh, that's. But I don't know if that's, like, the fun is parsing it out and not knowing the story, but I don't know. There could be something there.
Chelsea Devontes
I would absolutely revisit the Mariah Carey memoir by adding in the music. I also just want to. We got so, so, so many messages about how beloved that memoir in the music Stevie Nicks episode already is and how it's, like, one of the best and top ones. And I wanna say that was Christina's pitch and Christina's research. And, like, thank you so much. Like, I never would have done that. And you. You, like, showed this, like, beautiful way to do an episode. And I just wanna give you your flowers.
Christina Lopez
Thank you. I really didn't know what the shape of it was gonna be even when we were heading into the recording of it, because this is something that we've never done before. And I don't think a lot of. I mean, there's shows that talk about a specific song, but not necessarily the entire oeuvre that's, like, spoke, you know, about a whole artist, and to try to do it in an hour is really difficult. But it was an important lesson about women in music and how she uses her artistry and how she still. We recorded it before she released her most recent single. But how she's still using her artistry to talk about things that she's gone through that speak to larger things that women can relate to on the whole, especially right now. So I think it's important, you know, when we talk about women's art, we can include other mediums, other written mediums in our conversation. And I'm glad that people really enjoyed it because it was a risk. It was something that we don't normally do and something that people might not be interested, but it seemed like it really resonated for the people who enjoyed it.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah. And I'm one of them, so thank you. Okay, so now we're gonna Go into our very last segment where we are going to play a clip from the Stevie Nicks episode that we cut. And it was me asking our guests to weigh in on the Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, Haley Williams, Jack Antonoff musical publishing royalties drama. So to give you a little recap, I'm taking this from Billboard, but basically, Olivia Rodrigo has never been shy about sharing her musical influences, including Taylor Swift and Hayley Williams. And that had been going on for a long time in the press. And. And, you know, she became friends with Taylor Swift. She shared credits on her second single, Deja Vu, with Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff. Then Olivia Rodrigo retroactively ended up adding Hayley Williams to the songwriting credits. Good4U, due to an interpolation of the band's song Misery Business. And so she, like, did an interpolation of that song. And so she later ends up adding Hayley Williams and Joshua Farrow to her own song credits. So again, taking this from Billboard, this was the second time since Olivia Rodrigo's album Sour's release that she added writing splits on her songs due to similarities between her work and other previously released songs. That also came after she had added Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff on One Step Forward, Three Steps Back. So this is a lot of Olivia Rodrigo putting out music and then adding these credit splits to these songs after the fact. Now, since then, we have seen Olivia interact with Taylor Swift a lot less, if at all, after kind of watching her talk about how she looked up to her and loved her so much for so long. And a couple of quotes from Olivia Rodrigo. Olivia Rodrigo has admitted that she was caught off guard by Taylor Swift receiving songwriting credits on her biggest hit hit, and said she wouldn't personally do that to a young artist. And then she also said she was caught off guard. That's a direct quote. When other artists took 50% of the royalties on her two biggest hits. And she's sort of like, you know, I let legal handle this, so she's not getting into the weeds. But another quote from Olivia is, I think it's disappointing to see people take things out of context and discredit any young woman's work. Olivia said at the time, quote, every single artist is inspired by artists who have come before them. It's sort of a fun, beautiful sharing process. Nothing in music is ever new. There's four chords in every song. That's the fun part. Trying to make that your own. And so kind of the two sides you're looking at are, there were headlines that would come out saying, like, Olivia Rodrigo plagiarized and is making that right by adding credit. Then there's this other line of thinking that, like, this is just how music works, works. And was there something nefarious or dirty or shitty from Taylor Swift and Hayley Williams by having their names added to these songwriting credits, which means money, it means they get half of all the royalties from that song. So it's a real financial thing. So there's a lot of obviously layers to it. And so I ended up asking my guest Blake, who is a musical expert, like, what. What. What was due to these other artists? What is just making music? Should she have really added their names and credits to her songs and given them half the money? Was this something kind of shitty that was being asked for? So listen to the segment. We'll see you in the comments. Very curious your thoughts. And I will throw to that segment now. Now I need to just take a quick, quick tangent because I believe I am here with experts and I'll never get the answer if I don't ask. Recently, when Olivia Rodrigo wrote music to Taylor Swift chords and Taylor was like, now you owe me song credit and made her put her on her song and get the royalties off of that. And now they're obviously no longer speaking. Can you. Do you know what I'm talking about here? Like, so you just said this is totally legal, a normal practice in music. Do you see that changing now, given that that just happened to Olivia Rodrigo with Taylor Swift and the Paramore singer?
Blake
I mean, I can speak to that a little bit. I'm choosing my words carefully so as to not come across as a fucking pompous ass. So forgive me, but I swear to God. So I'm literally in the throes of finishing a manuscript about musical borrowing for Oxford University Press. I'm done with the pompous part. Done with the pompous part.
Chelsea Devontes
The witch in me knew to ask you this. I'm a witch. Go on.
Blake
This topic is quite near and dear to my heart and. And interest. So the short answer is it depends. It's always dependent. But once upon a time, I think it was more a mutually understood tradition and kind of musicians code that were all using not each other's stuff necessarily. And there's also kind of a like, know it when you see it thing. It's like, look, if you cross a line, you cross a line. And by the way, it also should be mentioned that Stevienix did give songwriting credit to Prince. So if you look on the credits, he is a 50% co writer of it's either 25 or 50, I forget. But he is credited and didn't need to be. But the longer answer, which I will make succinct, is it depends one on the era. You're right. Back then people were less inclined to sue around the time of the George Harrison lawsuit.
Christina Lopez
Oh yeah, my sweet lord.
Blake
That's when it starts to change a little bit because people saw that they could make a million dollar payday by saying, hey, that melody sounds familiar. And the title of my book is going to be, hey, that sounds familiar.
Chelsea Devontes
But amazing to this day, that's.
Blake
First of all, all of these stories are on my TikTok and YouTube. Like this is what I've been doing for the last four years.
Chelsea Devontes
Plug that handle, Blake.
Blake
I'm plugging it. It's Uxury L U X X U R Y. I've been making videos, little one minute stories about songs borrowing from other songs since the pandemic. And that's what led to the podcast where we also tell these stories. So all this to say that, like, it's very, it's very interesting to me how it has changed from the Stevie Nicks era. And also, don't forget, she is coming from a tradition. The tradition, especially like blues and country, the foundational elements, especially chord changes are just like. Everyone uses these damn chord changes.
Chelsea Devontes
Yeah.
Blake
What I'm bringing to it is my lyrics and my melodies. That's what's new.
Chelsea Devontes
Right.
Christina Lopez
And you think about like the musical lexicon of rock and roll.
Chelsea Devontes
It's always been simplicity.
Christina Lopez
It's usually the same four chords.
Chelsea Devontes
It's like hard to not sound like somebody else.
Blake
Yeah.
Chelsea Devontes
So that's the trick, honestly. Okay, thank you so much for going there. I can't wait to read your book. And just thank you for doing that tangent with me.
