This is a celebrity memoir podcast where we dive into all of the glamour and all of the trash. I'm your host Chelsea devontez. I'm a TV writer, comedian, filmmaker, author and sometimes I'm in stuff too. And this is not a memoir episode but it is literary and it is trashy so it feels very on brand. This is a viral article episode where we recap and discuss a viral article that everyone is talking about and I read it so that you don't have to. Now perhaps you noticed that we dropped two episodes on the same day. That's right, another viral article episode dropped in the feed. We have dueling episodes out today. We are basically going to look at how each one does, how the numbers do for each episode to influence and help us choose what format we like most for this new viral article series. This episode you're about to hear is solo. Very short. A true recap, pop culture focused. The other episode has a guest. It's longer, it's more socio political, a bit deeper. I would love your feedback. If you have a preference for which format you like more, please weigh in. DM me, get on the Patreon, leave a comment, whatever. Now let's dive in. Today's article is titled the Jessica and Ashley Show. After quote, the deepest heartbreak of my life. Jessica Simpson is back with new music and ready to spill with her sister. It was published on the Cut about a month ago and then they put it out again. Listen, I love the Cut, but the byline for this Article is that this article is quote by the cut. So not a great sign. You know, there wasn't, like, an actual singular writer behind it. My guess is that by the cut means that, like, four publicists collaborated in a word doc and a besieged copy editor was brought in at the end. Now, the article is Ashley Simpson supposedly interviewing her sister, Jessica Simpson. And it's really to plug Jessica's brand new single titled Use My Heart Against Me and her new album titled Nashville Canyon. So let's just play a quick clip of her new single and then I'm going to tell you the highlights of the article. Go on. Use my heart against me. Double down like I'm your whiskey first. Highlights, low light. It reads as pretty fake. Here's how the article starts. Ashley Simpson says, I'm so excited to be talking to you about this journey that you've been on. Tell me about Nashville Canyon. How did this all start? That cannot be how Ashley really talks to her sister. If it is, I am bummed. I think they just needed, like an intro into this article and maybe they got AI on the job or something. Terrible. Now, another highlight from the article. This is actually my favorite quote. Ashley talks to Jessica and she says, when we were new moms, you couldn't even walk out the door without having to hide. Jessica says, another great thing about Nashville is there's no paparazzi. I was literally doing cartwheels down the Walmart aisles. Ashley, isn't that the best? Like, hey, I'm a human Jessica. I was like, being in CVS right now is so dope. Look at these new little vaselines. Okay, that is what I'm talking about now. It sounds like maybe they really did have a conversation. Look at these new little vaselines. Best quote in the article. I think we all just laughed with recognition. Yeah, they. They always do have tiny little new vaselines. The. The little mini ones where, like your thumb fits in it and the vaseline is tinted pink. I'm obsessed. I. It makes me want to go buy one now.

And so in the article, we learned.

That Jessica has fully moved to Nashville post divorce. She barely acknowledges that she's divorced, but she does and she's in Nashville and she's put her LA house on the market. And they. I don't know how they're doing co parenting, given that maybe he's still in la. That's not in the article. Now, another highlight of the article is that Jessica confirms, yes, I'm getting divorced. But then she starts talking about the album again. And one of the quotes is that dad said like, so when did you start liking music like this? And this is where I am bummed because apparently Joe Simpson is still in the picture. You know what I mean? Like, Joe has guided so much of Jessica's career, and after reading her book, I had hopes that she would distance herself from him. But one important highlight to me from this article is that Jessica is not at a label, she's not signed with a record label. So she is just putting this album out herself. And in the article she says, I don't even care if it's on the radio. I just want a vibe. Which, yeah, I hard relate right now. Who doesn't just want a vibe? And then really there's only one thing you have to know about this article, which is that Jessica Simpson tells a story about Prince. And I'm gonna repeat it for you now. She said, Prince, back in the day and I would get into spiritual conversations. He's very religious. We know Jessica grew up very religious. She said one time during this Grammys party. Okay, so it's during a Grammys party. I went to his house and he was kind of waiting for me. The door opens and he's standing there. He's like, Ms. Jessica. And I'm like, yeah, Mr. Prince. Hilarious. Love this. Okay, I'm gonna keep reading. He took me by the hand and said, I want to show you something. People are walking around with their Grammys, their accolades, and he had just released Musicology. He couldn't stand where music was and he wanted to school people on where music should be. He walks me to his mantel and he's like, do you notice anything? I look up and there's one thing on his mantle, and it was a cutout picture of just my smile framed. I was like, is that my smile? Okay, I just. I hope everyone's screaming at the top of their lungs having just heard that. What the fuck? Okay, one more paragraph, hold on. He was like, yes. I want you to look very closely at that smile and know that no matter how many talks we have about being Jehovah's Witness or non denominational or Baptist or whatever it is, God is in that smile. Don't let any man ever take that smile away from you. And do not let this music business take that smile away from you. You guys, I am on the floor. I don't know how this isn't the only thing we've all been talking about every single day. Prince has held a Grammys party and has pre cut out a picture of Jessica Simpson's. Smile to lead her in because he's waiting for her to give her a speech about that smile. And it's all wrapped up in God. I It makes me think of Prince's Sinead O'Connor story. Or Sinead O'Connor's Prince story also has weird undertones like this, but obviously a very different takeaway. And all the times princes come through memoirs. The number one cameo in memoirs, Mick Jagger has finally become number one again. Then it's Henry Kissinger, and then it's Prince. And it is always Prince mentoring a beautiful young woman. He cut out a picture of her smile, you guys. Okay? And then the article wraps up and Ashley's like, oh my God, girl, should we do a collab? And they note that they've only ever done two Christmas single collabs before. That's okay. Insane. And it just sounds like they're like, hey, who wants a collab from Ashley and Jessica? Okay, article ends. Let's do my new article test that I still don't have a name for yet. First question, did reading this article make me need to scream about this with someone? Yes, absolutely. That Prince story. Second question, was it well written? Absolutely not. And third question, did it make me think deeper about the subject matter? Yes and no. No. I'm going no. Going no. Listen, I love Jessica Simpson. I will always love her after her book. I want massive happiness for her. I don't know that this article was it. And thank you so much for listening along. Release Date: February 25, 2025
Host: Chelsea Devantez
In this episode of Glamorous Trash, host Chelsea Devantez delves into a viral article featuring Jessica Simpson's interview in The Cut. Aptly titled "The Jessica and Ashley Show: After the Deepest Heartbreak of My Life," the episode dissects the article's content, authenticity, and its impact on Jessica Simpson's public image.
Chelsea introduces the episode by presenting the controversial article from The Cut, which purports to feature an interview between Jessica Simpson and her sister, Ashley Simpson. The article serves to promote Jessica's new single, "Use My Heart Against Me," and her upcoming album, "Nashville Canyon." Chelsea expresses skepticism about the article's authenticity, suggesting it may have been crafted by multiple publicists rather than a single writer.
Chelsea Devantez [02:30]:
"Jessica Simpson is back with new music and ready to spill with her sister... the byline for this Article is that this article is quote by the cut. So not a great sign."
Chelsea critiques the article's portrayal of the sisters' relationship, finding the dialogue between Jessica and Ashley unnatural and potentially AI-generated.
Chelsea Devantez [03:15]:
"Ashley Simpson says, 'I'm so excited to be talking to you about this journey that you've been on.' That cannot be how Ashley really talks to her sister."
Despite her reservations, Chelsea finds some redeeming moments, particularly a humorous exchange about "new little vaselines," which she praises for its relatability and authenticity.
Chelsea Devantez [04:10]:
"Ashley talks to Jessica and she says, 'when we were new moms, you couldn't even walk out the door without having to hide.' Jessica says, 'Another great thing about Nashville is there's no paparazzi. I was literally doing cartwheels down the Walmart aisles...look at these new little vaselines.' That is what I'm talking about now."
The episode covers significant aspects of Jessica Simpson's personal and professional life as presented in the article. Chelsea notes Jessica's relocation to Nashville following her divorce, the sale of her LA home, and her independent approach to her music career, emphasizing her desire for a genuine artistic "vibe" over commercial success.
Chelsea Devantez [05:20]:
"Jessica has fully moved to Nashville post-divorce. She barely acknowledges that she's divorced, but she does and she's in Nashville and she's put her LA house on the market...she is just putting this album out herself."
A standout moment in the article is Jessica Simpson's anecdote about Prince, which Chelsea examines in detail. Jessica recounts a meaningful encounter with Prince, who emphasized the importance of maintaining one's authentic smile despite the pressures of fame and the music industry.
Chelsea Devantez [06:45]:
"Prince took me by the hand and said, 'I want to show you something...look very closely at that smile and know that no matter how many talks we have about being Jehovah's Witness or non-denominational or Baptist or whatever it is, God is in that smile.' I am on the floor."
Chelsea draws parallels between this story and other memoirs involving Prince, highlighting a recurring theme of mentorship and personal connection.
Chelsea Devantez [07:30]:
"The number one cameo in memoirs, Mick Jagger has finally become number one again...it's always Prince mentoring a beautiful young woman."
Chelsea shares her mixed feelings about the article, appreciating certain moments while criticizing its overall quality and authenticity. She acknowledges the emotional impact of Jessica's Prince story but remains critical of the article's execution.
Chelsea Devantez [08:15]:
"Did reading this article make me need to scream about this with someone? Yes, absolutely. Was it well written? Absolutely not. Did it make me think deeper about the subject matter? Yes and no."

Chelsea wraps up the episode by inviting listeners to provide feedback on the dual episode formats introduced, seeking audience preferences to shape future content in the viral article series.
