This is how we, Sarah and I, operate. We do the digging. If something outrages us, if something makes us upset, even if something sounds too good to be true, it's likely not true. So we look it up to make sure that we are happy, sad, upset with validation.

It's just how you have to approach things in the year of 2024.

Yes. And if you have no idea what I'm talking. Right. And if you have no idea what we're talking about, good for you. Truly good for you. But a lot of people came to Us asking if certain retailers donated to certain campaigns because if so, they would not want to and it was debunked and there. I don't even want to get into it because there's so many aspects to this about why it's not true and how certain organizations can or cannot donate. But all that being said, I just want to say that it's very hard to have ethical consumerism under capitalism. Okay? So if you're going to boycott a certain retailer, then you also need to make sure that the car you're driving does not also have executives that donated to a campaign that you did not like.

The restaurants you're eating at, the grocery stores you're shopping.

[Sarah]

Do not be using your Amazon Prime.

Keep the energy for a specific retailer, then you should also keep it for everything else in your life. And that's why I say ethical consumerism under capitalism is very, very hard. Because this happened in 2016, where executives and higher ups at Delta and Coca Cola were shown to not have used company funds, but their own funds to donate to a specific party or person, and people lost their minds. But then it's like you don't realize how many companies Coca Cola owns. You do not realize how many people LVMH affects, because that also affects Fenty.

Exactly.

[Sarah]

So if you're gonna have that energy, you need to keep the same energy throughout your life. Just be, just be, be on the same energy level with everything. That's my personal opinion. But also, Sarah and I have talked plenty of times about voting with our dollar, and it's a one small way to make you feel better about your contribution to society. So if you decide that some people at a company voted in a way that you disagree with or donated in a way that you disagree with and you don't wanna support them, that is your prerogative to do so. However, you need to make sure that the fact the information is factual.

And that is all I'm asking. Okay. Because I know that if we did not mention that Sarah, there would be people going, well, why are you supporting this retailer and this brand or whatever? And I just wanted to get that out in the open. I'm not saying that to chastise anyone. I think we have very smart listeners that listen to this podcast. But I feel like I have to over explain every damn thing these days. Unfortunately, that's true. So here we are. Okay, so now shopping, because that's what you're here for you don't give a damn about anything else. You want to know what are the deals? We wanted to present something to you guys in terms of how to shop these sales. Because just because there is a sale does not mean it's a good one. It doesn't mean that you should be buying those products. Okay.

Especially I feel like now there are so many sales like year round all the time for every retailer. And Amazon has like 10 prime days. Then Target participates to there's I can't Sephora. I don't even know all the Sephora sales. And same with Ulta. Like there used to only be like an annual one and now there's like so many. So like I feel like people feel pressure to spend money and to shop Black Friday Cyber Monday but not all the sales are good sales.

[Sarah]

Agreed. So when you shop on Black Friday Cyber Monday, what do you prioritize? Like, are you looking for gifts? Are you looking for personal stuff?

[Kirby]

Yeah, definitely, like big ticket items. I think the thing that I get asked about the most and I have a few so I don't need them is the LED mask. Everyone is always like, which LED mask should I buy? And I think that's a good purchase for Black Friday Cyber Monday. I also think the gift sets or holiday limited edition, those sorts of items are what I put personally like to buy during the sales. I always end up buying myself something too or like things that like I use a lot and I just like want to stock up. That's usually what I buy.

[Sarah]

Yes, I think that's the right way to go. I do gifting and I also do stock ups on things I know that I love and that I use regularly. I also think people need to realize that prices will be hiked next year. There's going to be a lot of expenses associated with beauty. So if you do love something and you know you love it, buy a couple of them, especially at a discounted rate. I would also say this is the time to shop small. They may not have deals per se, but it would probably greatly impact their business and help them a lot more than some of these bigger conglomerates. So if you can support a small business or an independent brand, do that. And purchase from their own websites.

[Kirby]

Yeah, I think that's really important because I feel like a lot of times we're so trained now to look up an item on Google and see like where we can get it for the cheapest. And you're so right. Like during this time, like obviously everyone wants a deal, but I think it's just so important to support these brands where it counts, and that's shopping from their own websites.

[Sarah]

It could be a make it or break it year for them in the next year. Okay. And then also purchase from your experts that you love and see hairstylists, nail techs, estheticians, makeup artists. If your partner is wondering what to get you for the holidays, tell them, I want to get my hair done. This is who I go to and this is who I see. Have them purchase a gift certificate that takes care of not only the price of the service, but also a tip.

Yeah. Who doesn't want a gift certificate to get their nails done? A massage.

[Sarah]

A massage. Yeah.

[Kirby]

A scalp treatment.

[Sarah]

Yep. And even if those more than likely those services won't be discounted.

[Kirby]

No.

[Sarah]

But they may have products that you can also buy from them. So, like on top of that, if you have a product that you love, instead of maybe googling it, maybe go to your hairstylist and see if they sell it right. And purchase from them where they can either earn a commission, something of that nature. And then I think the big thing to think about is Nicole Concilio. I think we talked about this. Last year, Nicole Concilio posted a tweet or a thread or something that said something to the effect of these deals aren't even deals. You're paying for shipping and taxes. And I said, amen, sister. It's just another thing to get people hyped up about buying and over consumerism. I would say anything less than 25% at big box retailers is not worth it. You could get that literally just for signing up for an email list you want to be looking. I think the best deals are 30% or more. Yeah, that's my sweet spot.

But then there are some popular brands that rarely do sales and if they have a 20% sale, take advantage of that. You just have to know the brand and what you love.

And lastly, we have to ask. You have to ask Dodo.

So what does that stand for? Do you know what it does? Do you need it? How did you hear about it?

If you can't answer any of these, if you can't answer the first two questions and the third question is kind.

You don't need it and you shouldn't buy it.

But if you are buying it with intention because you know what it does and where it fits into your routine, you actually need something like this, you've ran out of it or you're looking to try this and include it in your routine. Great. And then you heard it from people that you know you trust. Maybe it's word of mouth from your friends. Maybe it is a person that you've been watching for years. It's not just some random person that popped up on TikTok shop.

I think that we get asked all the time, all the time about what LED mask is going to be the best and which one is better because they're expensive. And I'm just going to be 100% with you. You need to make sure that you're looking at wavelengths and then also irradiance wavelengths are what is going to make it effective based on the penetration, you want to stick between 630 and 660 nanometers. For traditional red light therapy and then the near infrared red light therapy, you want it to be between 820 and 840nm. We will put this in the show notes so that you guys can check these things. They should be readily available on the product page. And if you don't know DM the brand or email them to see if they can give those things to you. Those are very important. Some brands will just have the red light wavelength and then some will have both the red light and the nir. Yeah, which is great. Then the irradiance is important. And this is the amount of energy a specific part of your body receives over a set period while using the device. This will more than likely dictate how long you're wearing the mask. And you want that to be between 30 and 50 molecular weight per centimeters square. Now some brands may be like, we have a really high irradiance. We have whatever. If it's too high, it's not good because that could cause heat. And if you're me, you're getting heat induced melasma. So you don't want this mask to be hot on your face. It needs to be in the sweet spot. Think of it as goldilocks. So that 30 to 50 molecular weight per centimeter squared I think is the most. Not the most important, but it's important in conjunction with the wavelength. And we're gonna link this. And I think every beauty person that cares about LED masks should go to this site. It's from our friend Vanessa, whose blog is Goals to Get Glowing. She has the most comprehensive LED post known to mankind and she updates it frequently with deals that she has that she gets from these brands. But she has gone through and done the work for you to tell you these are the top ones that actually perform based off of their wavelengths and irradiance, among other things. And I have sent so many people to this blog post because she has just really done an amazing job.
