Chris McMillan
Foreign. Los angeles. Hi, kirby.
Kirby
Hi, sarah.
Sarah
Welcome to los angeles.
Kirby
We don't even.
Chris McMillan
I was gonna say it's Chris McMillan. I'm doing a podcast and I'm with Kirby, where I'm very comfortable. Sarah and I, we had like, a little kick. Like we're gonna get. This is. This is my people. I'm with my people. I'm comfortable. I'm Chris McMullen. Let's do this podcast. But who else?
Sarah
Who else are his people? Kirby, let's. Let's name a few.
Kirby
He's coined so many amazing hairstyles, like the Rachel, the country little Bob. There's so many Miley Cyrus cutting her hair off.
Chris McMillan
Like, taking her. Taking, like, Hannah Montana out of, like, Miley Cyrus. That was really the goal of that was. It wasn't so much. It was just like. It was a shape shift of a person. Hair does that. That's a big, important part of hair.
Kirby
Totally.
Sarah
Oh, and I didn't know you did say why. Didn't I? Of course. Sarah Jessica Parker. You know, I was named after her.
Chris McMillan
Were you?
Sarah
Yeah. And she has some of the best hair ever.
Chris McMillan
Sarah's got great hair. Sarah Jessica has got some of the best hair.
Kirby
Well, are you talking about Sarah Jessica Parker or Sarah Jessica Tan? Because that's who she's named after. She's literally named after Sarah Jessica.
Sarah
No, she's talking about Sarah Jessica Parker. We need to know what's in your kit, because we're dying to know three to four products that you always have in your kit.
Chris McMillan
Three to four. I mean, me personally, I'm like a true salon taught hairdresser. So clean conditioned hair is always a must for me. People don't even know how to shampoo their hair properly. But I love a well shampooed conditioned head of hair. Like, let's just start from scratch, clean slate and you know what I mean? And then I love a good blowout. And that's what people, they come in for the haircut, but they don't leave without the blowout. Like they get a haircut, but then they're like, okay, now the blowout, which will last me a week. So a glassy smooth blow dry spray is what I created because it's like the prep spray. It feels like water so it doesn't feel like you're putting anything in your hair. And the blow dry spray is just like a key. And then hairspray. I use hairspray in so many different ways. And the hairspray that I have, I created is a root lift during my blowout and especially in the crown and around the face. It is a aerosol heat protectant on dry hair before I use a hot tool.
Kirby
Putting hairspray on your hair before hot tool?
Chris McMillan
Yeah, I know it sounds crazy, but Sebastian in the 90s created a product called Laminates and, and it was a heat protecting hairspray that you use that created shine before you and you used it on dry hair before you used hot tools. And so when I was creating my hairspray, that was a big factor in mine. So it's a little bit like lnet and laminates had a baby. And that's my hairspray.
Sarah
Such a good.
Chris McMillan
It is every, every product I have. So basically my kit is I created everything in my line right now to this date. I could lose my suitcase on a trip and go to Sephora and buy my kit. Buy everything. And that's my kit.
Kirby
Go to brush.
Chris McMillan
It's my go to brush. Ibiza brushes for blowouts, Sheila Stotts for extensions and detangling, and Mason Pearson for slick backs. Yeah, I'm a classic guy. I'm a classic. I like it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Sarah
Right.
Chris McMillan
They just, they're really, really the best. And by the way, invest in all sizes of the Ibiza. The small, medium, large, get them all. And the just the classics. I like the white bristles more than I like the dark brown bristles. I love the cork handle. I think Sheila Stotts is just a freaking dog brush, to be honest with you, but it gets through. Hey, it really is. I call it the dog brush, but.
Kirby
That'S literally all I use.
Chris McMillan
And it's so. And it's, you know.
Sarah
Yeah, I Should try to put it on plan.
Chris McMillan
Yeah, it's the best.
Sarah
How often should we be washing our brushes? If it's just for our personal use.
Chris McMillan
At least once a week. I mean, come on, you guys. You gotta get the hair out of your brush. You gotta wash it and wash them. Wash them and shampoo them.
Kirby
And shampoo them.
Chris McMillan
Shampoo them with your shampoo.
Kirby
That's not going to ruin the Dr. Bronner's or something. Just use a regular shampoo.
Chris McMillan
Dr. Bronner's has. It's a film and it leaves us a film as it was on the drain of my shower when I used to buy it at Trader Joe's. And yeah, it leaves a. It leaves a film. I loved it as a body wash, but there's just a film.
Kirby
Like I take the hair out of my brush.
Chris McMillan
Yeah, you gotta take it.
Kirby
And I also have a brush cleaner in that aspect, but I don't have. I don't like wash my brush.
Chris McMillan
Just. It's like your makeup brushes.
Kirby
Yeah, okay.
Chris McMillan
Yeah, it's the same. Just treat them like, treat them like.
Kirby
You do right here first.
Sarah
Okay.
Chris McMillan
Yeah. Because there's residue left in your brush. That brush residue. And like I was telling Sarah that I have a new side hustle, which is. I know. Which is I am present for the install of hair extensions now. And we make sure you use a really good detox shampoo rather than dawn because you want all residue out of the hair before you install your K tips or your extensions. A great blowout before the. And then also able to cut some of the extensions before they go in to avoid from cutting the hair. Because once you. You're cutting your hair.
Sarah
Yeah.
Chris McMillan
And. And we can grow hair.
Sarah
Totally.
Kirby
Well, that's why I, I want my.
Sarah
K tips is so that I can grow my hair but have some filler in the meantime. I don't want to have my real hair cut.
Chris McMillan
Extensions are some. There's so many benefits and positive things. And by the way, this is nothing. It's not like a claim. But all my products are extension safe.
Sarah
No, that's, you know, so many people.
Kirby
I mean, I have extensions in now and my whole day is taken over by trying to get my hair done. Because it's like, okay, I have to take out my extensions, then I have to go for the reinstall, then I have to get my hair cut and then I have to go get my color. It's three different appointments.
Chris McMillan
It's a production.
Kirby
It totally is.
Chris McMillan
It's a production.
Kirby
One day I will be Ms. Jennifer Aniston. And I will have people coming to me to do all of this stuff. But truly, I love that you're like, I need to be present at the start because it's so true.
Chris McMillan
By the way, Jennifer Aniston comes to the salon and gets her hair done. Like, she is a true hair person. So she knows the value of good hair. She knows the value of getting it done. Right. She knows the value. She knows each other step, you know, when you do the color and then the blowout. Like, she loves to come to the salon and get a blow dry. She's too busy looking at what are they going to do to her hair.
Kirby
Right.
Chris McMillan
In fact, Chris, take your time because I want to see that person's hair done. Like, she gets invested in the clients that are coming in. Yeah, yeah, she's investing also.
Sarah
There is nothing better than getting your hair shampooed in the bowl by someone else and then a blowout. Are you kidding me?
Chris McMillan
It's. It really is one of those luxuries of life.
Sarah
It is.
Kirby
Chris, you mentioned details. Detox shampoos. Do you have a favorite at the moment?
Chris McMillan
I do not have a favorite. I'm actually in the world of like, trying them and playing with them. I come from the days of Sebastian and their detox was a conditioner that pulled all the impurities out of the hair and evened the porosity so that you could color your hair. So I'm kind of playing in that world. Detox shampoos, I think are really stripping at the moment. That's why they're really good. Detox shampoos are great for. But I don't think a heavy, heavy detox shampoo for if you're a once a week cleanser shampoo day girl, I think we could. It needs to be a little more nourishing. It's too stripping. Yeah, we don't want to strip our hair that much.
Kirby
Right.
Sarah
What about a scalp scrub?
Chris McMillan
Same thing. I think that scalp scrubs are awesome. I think blood flow to the scalp stimulates all of it. It's. It makes perfect sense. You know, I think that there's a combination of like a detox shampoo and a scalp scrub that is nourishing. That could be in. In one product. You know, there was. Back in the day, there was products like that Metal Ax, Bi, Clairol. It was. It was a product that we used like, I like your friend that we were talking about earlier, the guy that Clayton. He studies all the old products like him. I love the study of old and just like with innovation, you can take an old product that really did make sense. And with innovation, we can update it and rebrand it, remarket it, remake it. And I think that that's where the hair world is in my head. Okay, There you go. Am I too loud? No, no. I have a really deep voice.
Sarah
No, it's perfect. It's great.
Chris McMillan
I have a crazy voice.
Sarah
I actually really love your voice. It sounds.
Chris McMillan
No, it's so good.
Kirby
It's so good.
Sarah
I. That's not how I would describe it.
Chris McMillan
Okay.
Kirby
I would not describe it.
Chris McMillan
I listen to myself and I'm like, that is the gayest voice I've ever heard.
Sarah
It's not the first descriptor that I would choose.
Chris McMillan
I'm definitely growing into a older gentleman that I don't see. But what people do see is I'm growing in to be being like a hot older man.
Kirby
Isn't that weird?
Chris McMillan
I'm getting that feedback from the public. I don't think of myself. I'm a 27 year old kid that, you know, lives in Manhattan beach, totally in El Porto. It is body surfing.
Sarah
Yeah.
Chris McMillan
Like I'm a, you know, a settled in man.
Sarah
I love it though.
Chris McMillan
Scary.
Kirby
No, it's not scary when people start calling you sir. You're like gray hair. Yeah.
Sarah
I'm like, you're hot, Chris.
Chris McMillan
Foxy daddy, man.
Kirby
Would you ever color your hair?
Chris McMillan
Never. I would bleach it, but I wouldn't color it to make it look natural.
Kirby
Yeah, yeah.
Chris McMillan
They're going to know. They're going to know. They're never going to know, Chris. They're going to.
Kirby
Okay, Chris, so you started your career in a very different era than we're in now. The Tiktoks, Instagrams, the trend cycles. How are you getting booked on shoots at the beginning of your career versus how are people now getting booked on shoots to start their career?
Chris McMillan
Publicist. It was publicist.
Kirby
You had a public. You had a publicist or.
Chris McMillan
No, it was the publicist of the actors. And so I was doing Christian Slater because I did a photo shoot with Greg Gorman for True Romance and Susan Coley, his publicist, asked me if I would do the press tour. Did the press tour, met Patricia Arquette, who I had already known cut Patricia Arquette's manager Molly Madden's hair while we were waiting on the press junket because we have nothing better to do on press junkets that sit around and eat free food. So of course I always had my scissors handy and I was giving free haircuts to the publicists. And the managers. And she was like, will you do Patricia's hair? I was like, sure, of course. Will you go around the world for 500 a day, do hair and makeup, and we'll fly you first class? I'm like, I've made it.
Sarah
Wait, you also used to do makeup?
Chris McMillan
Yeah, I used to do makeup. I did Patricia Arquette and Christian Slater's hair and makeup on the press tour of True Romance. Molly Madden had a girl on a pilot called like, Six of One, which is now Friends. She had Jennifer Aniston on it. Jennifer. But Susan Coley was Courtney Cox's publicist. So I'm like, now in this sort of world, they know he does good hair. They tried them, used them. Given the opportunities, I took advantage and did the best that I can do. Suited up and showed up and. And it really was run through the publicists. You know, the publicists were rebooking you and booking you and then booking you. Like. Jennifer's publicist is Stephen Uvain. Stephen Uvain had Julianne Moore. Julianne Moore. I would do her hair, and you know what I mean? And it just kept going around in the circles. And then you did good hair. You did. And then the photographers, you would do a shoot. It was. So that's when I was doing actresses, when actresses started doing the covers of magazines simultaneously. Gwyneth Paltrow had just done the COVID of vogue in the 90s. First celebrity to. Or was it. No, it's Nicole Kidman.
Kirby
Yeah, I think it was.
Chris McMillan
But it was just that time. It was. And then all of a sudden, like, Michael Thompson is shooting the COVID of W. And you're like, oh, my God, look at Giselle's. Never looked. Wait, that's Jennifer Aniston on the COVID of W, looking like Giselle. So we started turning the movie stars and the celebrities into models. So I was in that era where the next thing you know, we were putting celebrities on the covers of magazines. Not models, but we were putting celebrities looking like models. I have always been inspired by models. Gucci, Tom Ford, 1995. Lives rent free in my head at all times. And I wanted to give Amber Valletta's haircut to Jennifer Aniston because it translated perfectly and was so modern. And that's why I am who I am today. It's all your fault.
Kirby
Tom Ford is Tom Ford 19 and. Please do not drag.
Chris McMillan
It was his.
Kirby
Please don't drag me for not knowing this. Is this when Madonna wore that?
Chris McMillan
Yes. Teal MTV Awards.
Sarah
Okay.
Chris McMillan
Teal silk blouse.
Kirby
Yep.
Chris McMillan
With the up here. Peter Savic did her. Her hair that night. She had the fall on with a bouffant in the back, slicked back here, low cut here. Amazing. It was also the red velvet suit with the light blue shirt on. Gwyneth Paltrow. It was also, like, it really does.
Sarah
Live rent free in your head.
Chris McMillan
It was beautiful. It was a beautiful time. It was when, you know, Kate Moss, Amber Valletta, all of them were walking the Runway looking like rock stars, like the wives of rock stars.
Kirby
Every publicist loves you right now, by the way. They're literally like, you're keeping us in business, babe.
Narrator/Advertiser
Yeah.
Kirby
Because right now, I feel like a lot of people are getting jobs based off their following.
Chris McMillan
Sure.
Kirby
Not necessarily having a press person.
Chris McMillan
There's definitely. There's definitely a shift going on. And.
Sarah
But, like, relationships are still so important, is what you're saying.
Chris McMillan
The relationships and. And meeting people in real life, it really does make a difference. I still practice that. I teach my team that take every call, you know, meet every person, try to meet people, and, like, we can all go on zoom. But there's a feeling that you get when you meet people in real life. And I will. I mean, my age will never let me let go of that because I'm a grumpy old man as well, so. And I don't want to lose. But that's, like, a gift to have all that.
Sarah
Can we talk about the Rachel again? Because, I mean, we could literally talk about the Rachel this whole entire episode. But you recently said Cameron Diaz had the Rachel first.
Chris McMillan
Cameron Diaz. I was really into sort of Amber Valletta at the time, and she was giving. And then there was another model named. And Ward did her hair. A New York hairdresser. Amazing hairdresser. And it was. I can't remember her name. It was a model. And he did this sort of, like, shaggy, where the front was grown out and the back was kind of shaggy. And I was just obsessed with it. It was beautiful. And I basically gave Jennifer Aniston that haircut. It was. Jennifer Aniston has a small forehead, so she needed to grow her bangs out. So I already knew that she had all these layers, so I kind of evened up her hair. And then that's when the Bobby pin to help grow out, when we did the little bobby pin over and then this hung over, and that's kind of where that trend started. And then I just gave her a blowout. And because it kind of hits around the shoulder area, you get those flicks. But she would always pull her layers, like, from back forward. So they kind of did this. And that was sort of the Rachel. I think TV is powerful in that case. You know, we see them more often less than in the movies. Except for Rene Russo. Her haircut in Thomas Crown Affair. Fabulous haircut. So that was. Enzo did that haircut that. But. But.
Sarah
And it was very popular, but nothing like the Rachel.
Chris McMillan
And so was Rachel Ward. And Against All Odds, that was a great short haircut. I remember cutting hair, becoming a hairdresser in the salon, and a lot of people were bringing. So I knew that the power. The power of, like, a celebrity wearing hair. Racial ward that I Remember on the 18, 19, 20 years old. And I'm cutting hair in a salon in Manhattan beach on 10th and Manhattan Avenue. Yeah. Nicole's. And people would bring, like, pictures of Rachel Ward from Against All Odds. So that's where I'm like, oh, yeah, I like it, and I did it. And then people really liked this Rene Russo cut from Thomas Crown Affair. And now I know what it's like. People bringing pictures in of Jennifer Aniston and the Rachel.
Sarah
What was it like walking around in the 90s, though, and then being like, oh, my God, everyone has the haircut that I gave.
Chris McMillan
I was so stoned, I didn't even notice.
Kirby
Is this before you got sober?
Chris McMillan
It is.
Kirby
Okay.
Chris McMillan
I was stoned out of my mind. I didn't feel I was worthy. It was so easy to do because it's what I do. So it came natural. It was like, she needs to grow her bangs out. She needs a blowout, and we need to grow those layers out. So to me, it wasn't like, oh, we're gonna create a haircut. It was more the thought, like, we need to grow our bangs out. Like the cunty little Bob that was a short haircut growing into trying to even up all the layers. So nothing's really been like, long hair and we're gonna cut it. It's always, you know, things sort of, like, roll. Except for maybe Miley Cyrus when we bleached and cut her hair. But that was just us sending pictures of Agnes Dean and Kate Moss with short bleached hair from Mario Testino pictures. And, like, this is what I want. And we did it.
Kirby
Is it a coincidence that you did the same thing with Katy Perry?
Chris McMillan
Katy Perry got her hair bleached, and it started falling out. And so all I was was the fixer.
Kirby
Poor Katie.
Chris McMillan
I was just the fixer. I just went in, and she knew she had to cut it off. And then we Went into a pixie on her.
Kirby
And Miley was not a result of that. Miley was just like she.
Chris McMillan
Miley wanted, wanted. Like Agnes Dean meets Kate Moss. Bleach blonde, short hair is very punk. Yeah, we went punky with her.
Kirby
Yeah.
Chris McMillan
Which is very Miley.
Kirby
Totally. Did you do Jennifer Lawrence when she went short?
Chris McMillan
I didn't.
Kirby
You didn't. I can't remember who did that, but there was a phase of women, like, getting. Oh, yeah, just these, like, radically short shell.
Chris McMillan
Well, there was also, like, the Kirsten Dunst, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Winona Ryder. Those. I used to cut Winona's hair short.
Kirby
Wow.
Chris McMillan
Yeah, so that was back in the day when I was doing that and Kirsten Dunst. I used to cut her hair short. Maggie Gyllenhaal. I never did, but I always did love her short haircuts.
Kirby
Winona. Wow.
Chris McMillan
Winona forever.
Sarah
Forever. Seriously.
Kirby
Scorpio. Scorpio. If there ever was one. She's a Scorpio.
Chris McMillan
I'm a scorpio.
Kirby
I know.
Chris McMillan
Oh, yeah.
Kirby
I'm a Scorpio moon. So Scorpio Stellium. Just putting it out there.
Sarah
So we were talking about the short hair, the pixie cuts. You referenced loving boy cuts on girls. What would you say that cut is right now in 2026?
Chris McMillan
It's so funny. Wait, but Cameron. Yeah, she. That was Cameron. I was doing Cameron's hair all the time back in the day. So, yeah, she did. And I look at pictures. I was like, Cameron was the og.
Kirby
Oh, you're coming. You're coming back to the original Rachel.
Chris McMillan
So I'm just like, she kind of was. And that was when I did this post. Like, working with Cameron in the 90s was just really fun for us. I mean, she was working a lot, so there was a lot of hairdressers with their hands on her head. But she would always. I'm like her haircutter. I was always the guy that cut Cameron's hair. Her and I went way back from when she was with, like, Elite Modeling Agency. So I. Yeah, she was like the girl that I would test and build my book with.
Sarah
I mean, she had some of the best hair, too, but. Yes. Okay.
Chris McMillan
Short hair to day. I think short hair is having a little comeback. I think people are starting to cut their hair off. I think Emma Stone has been. I mean, that's a great example of cute haircuts. She shaved her head, and we watched her grow her hair out and have it maintained by a hairdresser. And Mara, who did a beautiful job. And I just think that that's a fun way for everybody to see. Yeah. Hair grows. We saw her shave her head off. If. I mean, if you care, whoever's listening or paying attention. But that was a great example of the last year of a grow out. Short hair. People are going shorter. I don't think there's anyone super famous at the moment who has short hair intentionally.
Kirby
Except for what, Teyana Taylor.
Chris McMillan
Teyana Taylor.
Sarah
Yeah.
Kirby
But she's also like. She plays with her hair a lot. Yeah, she does a look. So sometimes her hair is short, sometimes.
Chris McMillan
It'S a Betty Boop. Short hair of now. It's very feminine.
Sarah
Yeah.
Chris McMillan
Hers is. I wouldn't call hers a boy cut. Hers is. I was looking at her the other day and I was like, she's Betty Boop. She is the Betty Boop of us.
Kirby
Why?
Chris McMillan
She's. She's cute, she's sassy, she's sexy Betty Boop. She has that kind of, like, energy, like the Betty Boop. A modern day Betty Boop. That's what Tiana Taylor reminds me of.
Kirby
And an entertainer.
Chris McMillan
Feminine. All the little flicks that are poking out here and there. Nothing's too short. There's no strong lines. It's not Mia Farrow, it's not Gene Seberg, it's not Twiggy. Which are the boy cuts that I'm referring to that have inspired me always with short hair.
Kirby
You worked on Britney Spears.
Chris McMillan
Yeah, you know, I know Britney Spears.
Kirby
You know Britney Spears, and you love Britney Spears. You've done so many iconic looks on Britney. But I always think of the PC blonde with a little braid from I'm a Slave for your. You did the music video for that.
Chris McMillan
That was just twisted, braided piecey hair that just got better as the days got on.
Kirby
How long had you been working with her?
Chris McMillan
The very first time I ever did Britney was the Patchwork Denim or the American Music Awards. For the American Music Awards, we had done Jay Leno before and then she went and she had to go out to the American Music Awards and her and just Justin came to the dressing room, they got dressed together and boom, there they were.
Kirby
And you gave her that beautiful blowout. Yeah, I've done that Halloween costume before.
Chris McMillan
That's a good one. My favorite Britney, though, that was Womanizer because we got to do so many different looks. And I remember just having so much fun with that. That was Patty Dubrovni.
Sarah
Oh, really?
Chris McMillan
Did the makeup. I did the hair slave was Fran Cooper. Did the makeup. Yeah.
Kirby
I'm following a Bunch of people that did her makeup over time. And I'm like, just give me one product that you used on her. Do you remember a hair product you used on Britney at that time? What were you using?
Chris McMillan
We used glycerin oil is what we were using on that to keep it shiny and wet looking without it. Keep getting it wet.
Kirby
Oh yeah. On the slay for you music video. Oh my gosh. Wait, Chris.
Chris McMillan
Nobody's face lit up more than Britney Spears. She would smile and like a ray of sunshine. These, this beautiful smile and a ray of sunshine. Just a ray of sunshine over.
Kirby
I'm like, if you guys cut to this camera, I'm literally holding my hand.
Chris McMillan
To my heart like a glass low. Yeah, that's how like she had it the minute you met her.
Kirby
She's the Marilyn Monroe of our time.
Chris McMillan
She just has it. She has it. And I'm rooting for Britney.
Kirby
We all are. So am I. I absolutely love that.
Chris McMillan
I would do anything to, to work with her. Like to do like a. Just a. Give me a half an hour and we'll do a photo shoot. Change the world.
Kirby
I know I, I could do it.
Chris McMillan
I've already thought about it. I already know. Even if, if she can't take sitting down for 10 minutes, I would have a wig prepped and ready in the. It would be called the Britney wig of course because it would be like the best Britney hair ever in the history of hair.
Kirby
Totally.
Chris McMillan
And gorgeous. Put it on her. Lean forward, add a little wind.
Kirby
I'm have to force you to make me a Britney wig so I can wear it starting tomorrow. Okay. The celebrity glam team world is cutthroat and you can be. Wow. I think it can be but I mean you can. I was thinking about this recently. Sarah and I were talking about somebody that we know and they're no longer working with a longtime client. And we're noticing only because the posts that are coming up with the original team. There's one person still there and one person's mia. You have so many longtime clients that you, you know Jennifer sjp, Michelle Williams.
Chris McMillan
Well, I'm a backup hairdresser for SJP and for Julia Roberts. I'm Serge's west coast backup.
Kirby
Wow.
Chris McMillan
So there's that. And I think it's very important. But me being a hairdresser is I can't do everyone's hair. And it's really important to recommend other people.
Kirby
So how do you get the money.
Chris McMillan
From the heart that you're taking care of the person not taking care of your ego. And I'm not going to recommend somebody not so good. I'm going to recommend the best because that's what that person deserves. And if that. And I think everything works out the way it's supposed to.
Sarah
But, like, we've had, you know, Mark Townsend on the podcast, we've had Daniel Martin, people, you know, on all sides of the glam world, and they talk about this where it's like, you have such an incredible, you know, clientele, and it's a busy night and you have to pick between the two. Like, how do you do that?
Chris McMillan
Sure. You mean, say, on award show.
Sarah
Let's say it's an award show night. Yeah, yeah.
Chris McMillan
It's loyalty of. It's also the relationship that you have. Like, you know, Jennifer Aniston will always be number one on my. On my roster, no matter what. For Academy Awards, for Emmys, for every award show, always booked with Jennifer first, whether she goes or not. And then they release you and then you start. So it's like, first hold, second holds, and all of that, and it just works. And sometimes people like to share. Sometimes people don't like to share. On award show day.
Kirby
What a flex. You know, Jennifer Aniston, she's just number one on the call.
Sarah
She's not going.
Chris McMillan
But it's always the most fun. It's like my sister.
Narrator/Advertiser
Right.
Sarah
It transcends, like, any.
Narrator/Advertiser
Yeah.
Chris McMillan
She's so close.
Kirby
So it's not about the money. It's not about, oh, this person can pay more. So we're going to prioritize them.
Chris McMillan
Sure. And also, I don't need to go crazy anymore. I'm not looking to do everybody's hair or I'm missing out or I'm having fomo. I'm like, we were talking about. I was stoned. Well, guess What? I'm sober 26 years now. I am so blessed. Today is Mariska Hargitay's birthday. I went through my phone. I found a gazillion pictures of Mariska Hargitay that I can post on Instagram. Today. There's enough room for everybody to do hair, and I'm really excited. Like, I love, like, watching Bryce Scarlet and his career grow. I love watching Ariel the makeup artist go from, like, this heavy makeup to, like, I think Kylie Jenner was the most beautiful at the Golden Globes.
Kirby
Oh, yeah, she looks stunning.
Sarah
She's never looked better.
Chris McMillan
She, to me, is the Sophia Loren of today. Like, take away whatever. But she shows up and she got the memo and then some. And Killed it. She is the Sophia Lauren of our day. She's beautiful, you know, and we're seeing.
Kirby
That, like, she's paring things back a lot as well.
Chris McMillan
Sure. And she's. The makeup. The skin is clearer and shinier. The eye makeup is lighter. The lashes aren't heavy and weighing the. You know, we're really seeing, like. I think he does a beautiful job on her makeup.
Kirby
He mentioned Kylie. That brings me to you. Did Kim when she got married to Kanye?
Chris McMillan
I did.
Kirby
He's literally in keeping up with the Kardashians with Mario doing her hair. Hair looked incredible.
Chris McMillan
I mean, that was also. We changed sort of the landscape of what. And that was also working with Givenchy and Ricardo Ticci. And so it was really a collaboration with Ricardo Ticci. And that veil that was a mile and a half long, which was going to weigh down any hairstyle anyway. So we did a. It's not a slick back, but, like a tuck back on her head. But we gave her a little crown. Yes, she had a little crown.
Sarah
She was so beautiful.
Chris McMillan
The cascading curls down to a point down to the crack of her butt in the back of her head because.
Kirby
We got it beautiful.
Chris McMillan
And I think we really created. I've been booked to do weddings, which. I don't do weddings. I don't charge for weddings. We should put it. If I do your hair for your wedding, it's because I love you. Wow. I don't. I don't do bridezillas. I do not bring me into that world.
Sarah
Oh, because you're not flying to, like, Dubai to do someone's wedding. I mean, unless Kirby gets married in Dubai. Okay.
Kirby
I'm like, chris, you're coming to Dubai.
Sarah
Kirby and I walk into your salon, like, do whatever you want to do. What would you do to me, and what would you do to Kirby?
Kirby
Start with Sarah.
Chris McMillan
So, Sarah, you already said you love Chrishell Lim's hair.
Sarah
Yeah.
Chris McMillan
So I would do, like, like, a crochet limb. So that's like a. I would go in that world.
Sarah
Okay.
Chris McMillan
I would keep that world. That would be. I know that you have K tips in your hair. I love the way your hair looks. It looks beautiful. You would never know. They're never going to know.
Sarah
They're never going to know.
Chris McMillan
They're never going to know.
Sarah
Okay.
Chris McMillan
And then. But I like her vibe.
Sarah
Yeah.
Chris McMillan
Sexy.
Sarah
It's very edgy.
Chris McMillan
It's loose. It does a lot. You can wear it up or is.
Sarah
No, no.
Chris McMillan
She was a bob. And we're growing it out.
Narrator/Advertiser
Okay.
Chris McMillan
So she was a bob and we're growing it out. So we just started creating face framing layers and gave her curtain bangs.
Kirby
Wow. Okay.
Sarah
Yeah, yeah.
Chris McMillan
I mean, I love your hair. I mean, would I change? You don't really change it. I would add more layers around your face.
Sarah
Yeah.
Chris McMillan
If anything, if that's what you would do, Kirby, on the other hand, I would do exactly what she would never let me do. Is why probably we don't do her hair. But I would give her a bob. I'd give her a bob.
Kirby
But Chris, can I just say my piece real quick?
Chris McMillan
Yeah.
Sarah
I'm so happy to hear that. By the way.
Chris McMillan
I would give her a bob.
Kirby
But when you say this, what you don't realize is my dream is a blonde bob. However, these pieces, the reason why I keep cutting them into bangs is because they never grow past this part of my head. They never do. Even when I haven't bleached my hair in six years, these pieces of hair will never grow long. And I need to have the length.
Sarah
Right.
Sleep Number Advertiser
We talked about this.
Chris McMillan
So for me, the length around the face.
Kirby
My. Like, I have talked to people about making me a blonde bob wig that looks so realistic so I can live out this dream. So you're not off of the intuition of wanting to give me a bob that is really into my life, of what I've wanted my whole life. But I. I can't do it because if I bleach my entire head of hair, I will have my hair falling out, which was the problem and why I stopped bleaching it in the first place. And now I'm in this position where I decided to go light again for the first time and I'm having an existential crisis.
Chris McMillan
You have blonde hair.
Kirby
It's bronze.
Chris McMillan
I love broad hair.
Kirby
I love good. But there are some. There's some lighting. There's something going on. And I also think with now the mid length cut, which I don't totally hate, but the. The bangs of this cut are really giving me.
Chris McMillan
You need to do one of two things. You need to really commit to a bang. Like you used to do your OG Bang, because that was a flex on you. This is neither here nor there on you. You like a statement. You like when you look at it, this is what you're getting. A bang is definitely you. You've always worn bangs. You look great in bangs. You know how to work with bangs. That or like I said, you gotta maybe like cut it into a bob and let the bangs grow out. Just do like a little bob. It Tuck it. Do like what Kim Kardashian did on her wedding day. And then we're a little, like, flicked it out, and then these will just grow in. We can grow them in. You can grow them in. You can do it. You can do it, Chris.
Kirby
I tried for almost 40 years of my life to grow these in. I have, and they do not grow.
Chris McMillan
Do you use a Revlon blow brush?
Kirby
No.
Chris McMillan
Okay, good.
Kirby
Absolutely.
Chris McMillan
Not that I don't love that. It's a great product. It just burns all hair off like a.
Sarah
Like a tape in here. Like, could we.
Kirby
No, because that's where all of my hair fell out.
Chris McMillan
She would have to do them from a half an inch from her part. You'd have to do them right from the very top.
Kirby
So look at me now with what I currently have going on.
Chris McMillan
We're now in hair consultation.
Kirby
We are, we are. And I'm so sorry to anyone listening, but I need this.
Sarah
We're bypassing the fee because y' all.
Kirby
Don'T realize I was having a meltdown prior to this. She was, and Chris had.
Chris McMillan
She deserves this.
Narrator/Advertiser
Yes.
Sarah
Chris is used to it. I'm sure you're used to it. You know, he's like.
Kirby
He's like, kirby's the biggest diva. I work with the most famous amazing women, and Kirby's the biggest div.
Chris McMillan
Kirby's awesome. I love her.
Kirby
So if I was coming to you right now, and you were like, this is what's going to work for you. Map it out. What am I doing today?
Chris McMillan
Well, it would just, like, I'd have to do it. I'd. If it was a salon visit, I'd have to feel you out right now at this moment, knowing where you're at with the bang. I would probably cut a strong bang.
Kirby
On you with this length.
Chris McMillan
Yeah. I would go with a heavy bang.
Sarah
It would be really cute.
Chris McMillan
And then you could, like, you'll twist the back up for a while into a little clip and have that sort of like, Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin bang situation going on around the face when.
Kirby
You say heavy bang. So this is what's confusing.
Chris McMillan
Heavy, like a Birkin bang. Burkin.
Kirby
When you say bang, you're saying straight across.
Chris McMillan
Like Dakota Johnson. I do her mom's hair.
Kirby
Melanie.
Narrator/Advertiser
Yeah.
Kirby
Let's go to rapid fire.
Sarah
Let's do this. Okay.
Chris McMillan
I like a rapid fire.
Sarah
What is one haircut that really never goes out of style?
Narrator/Advertiser
Bob.
Kirby
He loves a Bob. What's the most underrated hair product?
Chris McMillan
Hairspray.
Kirby
Yeah. You love hairspray.
Chris McMillan
I love Hairspray.
Kirby
You use it for everything.
Sarah
You are scanning your clients hair care and styling products. What are you telling them to throw out?
Chris McMillan
You guys are gonna kill me. No, we're not dry shampoo.
Kirby
Why?
Chris McMillan
I know this sounds crazy. I think that dry shampoo has come a long way. And the old school powdery dry shampoos that leaves dust and dullness to hair that is no longer, I think dry shampoos and texture sprays. My dry texture spray dry with a texture spray in it. It's basically like the living proof dry shampoo which I helped create. And then the dry texture spray or the texture spray by Orbe, my favorite. Which doesn't have a death in one. Yeah, in one baby.
Kirby
When I spray that dry texture spray, is there a reason why there's a little like crackling noises?
Chris McMillan
Yeah, that's the glitter that's inside that's absorbing the dirt.
Sarah
Oh, yeah.
Chris McMillan
So we used glitter instead of powder. I'm sorry. I like shiny things.
Kirby
Oh, damn.
Chris McMillan
Smooth blow dry.
Sarah
Talk about how good it smells. Your product smells so good.
Chris McMillan
I love fragrance. If I wasn't a hairdresser, I'd be a nose or a photographer.
Kirby
Love this.
Chris McMillan
Yeah. Love scent is a big deal to me and so always, I think with hair care products, I don't want that to be your final scent. I want it to play well with others so. So you can layer the scents and they're all layerable, scent friendly scents that I've created.
Kirby
You can't say Jennifer, who is a celebrity with consistently great hair.
Chris McMillan
Mariska Hargitay, Michelle Williams, Kylie Jenner. Is she Kris Jenner?
Sarah
Kris Jenner.
Chris McMillan
I cut Kris Jenner's hair yesterday while watching the nominations live at 5:30am yesterday morning.
Kirby
And there was something to celebrate.
Chris McMillan
It was just so fun.
Kirby
Timmy got his nom.
Chris McMillan
He did.
Kirby
He got his nom again. We love this for him.
Chris McMillan
I also am really excited for Kate Hudson. Oh, that she got a nomination. I just love it. It just makes me so happy.
Kirby
That's my girl.
Chris McMillan
I texted her immediately and she texted me right back.
Kirby
She's the best. Ye Iconic is my favorite movie of all time.
Chris McMillan
Which one?
Kirby
Altmost famous.
Chris McMillan
Oh, yeah, Billy. Crud up.
Kirby
Oh my God, Billy.
Chris McMillan
Are you kidding?
Kirby
I know Billy.
Chris McMillan
One of my favorite human beings on the face of the earth.
Kirby
Huge crush.
Chris McMillan
So not as should be.
Kirby
He's a great guy.
Sarah
Wait, what did you just trim for Chris? What'd you do?
Chris McMillan
Yeah, we were just giving her her bob. Bob and bangs. Bob and bangs. I gave her a great bang.
Kirby
I'M sorry.
Chris McMillan
I gave her a good bob. Blunt bob.
Sarah
Okay. What do you think people get wrong most often when it comes to their hair?
Chris McMillan
Shampooing, Proper shampooing. People don't shampoo their hair properly.
Sarah
Do we shampoo it enough?
Chris McMillan
They half shampoo their hair. And this is just on shampoo day. You gotta all this. This is the hardest part to get is back here.
Kirby
You need to go under. Yeah.
Chris McMillan
Really? That's. It's an application there and then another application there. And shampoo it twice at least.
Sarah
Especially if you're like only like a once a week shampoo type 3 times.
Chris McMillan
4 times is also. You want to get that lather, really lathering. And then condition mid length to ends. Put a little residue over the top because you don't want to flatten out your hair.
Kirby
If someone wants better hair every day and not just for special occasions, what should they focus on first? Cut, color or care?
Chris McMillan
Cut. Why it's always good to start with a good haircut. A good haircut will do all the heavy lifting. With a good haircut, minimal effort goes a long way. And I've always said that and I am a haircutter, but it's the truth. I have. I've been doing hair for a long time and I have the same clients, Mary Martin, who I've been doing since I'm 18 years old. And she is known for her hair.
Kirby
Yeah.
Chris McMillan
And it's her haircuts that people flip over. Jennifer Aniston gets her haircut once every six weeks maintenance. Like you get a facial, like you get your nails done. Haircuts do all the heavy lifting. With a good haircut, minimal effort in styling goes a long way.
Narrator/Advertiser
Agreed.
Sarah
Any tips for hair growth?
Chris McMillan
Any tips for hair growth? You gotta cut the roses to make them grow. So a little trim doesn't mean you have to cut your hair. That's why I like bob so much. Bobs are great resets. Anywhere from clavicle to jawline. It's a great reset for bad layers. Bad haircut, bad color. Getting it all off. And then you'll be amazed once your hair is all evened up. It really does start growing fast. Faster than you think.
Kirby
Totally.
Chris McMillan
So you're not stuck in your bob cut. Chrishelle Lim, great example. Bob started layering around her face. Now look at her. She's got such a great, groovy, sexy chic.
Kirby
I need to. I guess I just have not noticed because I just am so used to having a bob.
Sarah
Oh, there was like a whole. And then like I so many people were texting me about it too. They're like, you gotta get Chris to cut your hair. Cause that haircut he did on Christelle looks amazing. I was like, damn. Okay.
Chris McMillan
I love Chris Shell.
Kirby
Yeah, she's.
Sarah
I mean, she.
Chris McMillan
She's my little Sephora friend, so I didn't know her. I met her at the Sephora summit last year, and she was just sitting there and she was like, excuse me, sir, could you film some content for me real quick to do this? Yeah. She had no idea who I was. And I was like, of course. And then she was like, I love what you're wearing. I was like, I love what you're wearing. And so I'm like, hi, my name's Chris. And she's like, I'm Chris Shell. Nice to meet you. I'm like, oh, we're both Chris's. That's easy. So that's how it all went and that's how we met. And then all of a sudden, she got introduced to me and she was like, oh, shit.
Sarah
Wait. Speaking of what you were wearing, you were saying you always wear.
Chris McMillan
I always wear a white T shirt at the salon because you can always see everybody's hair. If I wear black T shirts, you can't see the hair, so I always wear a white T shirt. So if you guys always see me in a white T shirt, it's because it's kind of my uniform. I can see it's the backdrop to, like, I am your head and my shirt.
Sarah
What's your favorite white tea? Who makes it?
Chris McMillan
Kelly Cole.
Sarah
Okay.
Kirby
Kelly Cole.
Chris McMillan
Kelly Cole.
Sarah
It looks nice.
Chris McMillan
He used to sell vintage T shirts on La Brea, and he just started doing planes, and so it's like, it.
Sarah
Really shows off your muscles.
Chris McMillan
Oh, you're so sweet. I do go to the gym every morning. No matter what it shows, we can tell that's good. That consistency on anything cannot. You can't go wrong.
Kirby
Chris, we love you so much.
Chris McMillan
Thank you.
Kirby
You're the absolute best. We love your brand so much as well. I truly. Every day.
Narrator/Advertiser
Every day.
Kirby
Every single day. Will you be getting. You're getting into hair care as well at some point?
Chris McMillan
We are, yeah.
Kirby
Yeah.
Chris McMillan
We. We are launching a new product in March. So keep your eyes open and it's going to be very exciting and it's going to look really good. And partnering with Sephora, they definitely have a calendar and so a lot of exciting stuff.
Kirby
You have babies now. Little baby mini versions. I take them with me.
Chris McMillan
It's been really fun.
Sarah
Congratulations on everything. Thank you for coming.
Chris McMillan
Had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I'm here for it.
Sarah
We're so happy you did.
Chris McMillan
Thank you.
