Before we had AT&T business wireless coverage, our delivery GPS wasn't the most reliable. Once our driver had to do a 14 point turn to get back on route. A 14 point turn. An influencer even livestreamed the whole thing. Not good for business. Now with AT&T business Wireless, routes are updating on the fly and deliveries are on time. And the influencer did get us 53 new followers though. AT&T business Wireless connecting changes everything. Los angeles.
B
Hi, kirby.
C
Hi, sarah.
B
Welcome to los angeles.
C
For anybody that may be hearing a leaf blower in the background, sincerest apologies. We are recording from home today. Due to our schedules, I'm going to try to mute myself as much as possible, but unfortunately you have to listen to me talk a little bit longer because I have something I need to bring to everybody's attention. This is going to be a game changer, y'. All. And you might say curb. Stuff like this already exists. It's already out there. But marketing is marketing and for me, I am hooked. Hooked, line and sinker. I cannot wait. I practically begged this brand to send me this. And Sarah knows I just go out and buy shit.
B
Yeah.
C
I am the worst beauty editor on the planet. I never call things in. I just go and get it.
B
What is it?
C
It is the Shark chill pill. Oh yeah. I have never liked, sent, saved, googled, something faster. I. I was like texting Sarah, why don't I have this? Where is this? And she's like, oh, I've been pitched this. I'm like, they haven't been pitching me. Then again, par for the course. I just had to look through my inbox and I found a pitch. They were, they were pitching me, but I try to avoid emails at all costs. So that's my own problem. What is the Shark chill pill? This is the latest innovation from Shark. It is a three in one personal cooling system. So you may see it online and be like, that's a fan. There's so much more. So it combines fan engineering with cryo inspired cooling innovations developed by Shark. And if you know anything about Shark, you know that they have a lot of cryo in their beauty assortment. They have their fans, of course, and they said, we're going to give it up for the women that are perimenopausal and menopausal or perhaps pregnant or just lives in the State of Texas 20 during the summer or anywhere, honestly.
B
Because climate change, global warming.
C
Correct. So it says that it's designed for physical and emotional moments when the heat intensifies and relief can't wait. Which kind of makes it sound like a vibrator.
B
But emotional.
C
Whatever. I mean, emotional moments when the heat intensifies.
B
I get very upset when I'm hot. Matt knows this. He's like, you only. Only like to be between 68 degrees and 70. And if it's any hotter than that, you are a miserable person.
C
Imagine growing up in the state of Texas during the summer. Okay?
B
I would have perished.
C
It was a time. And my mom still deals with this.
B
God bless my father, God bless Janet, because.
C
Yes, and Janet. Honestly, God, God bless them both. So the chill pill comes with three interchangeable cooling attachments. One is airflow that delivers fast cooling relief at a high speed. It's a bladeless fan that pushes air up to 25ft per second. Instead of having a leaf blower on set, Clayton Hawkins just needs to grab this.
B
Oh. A bedazzled version.
C
A bedazzled shark chill pill. And it says that there is an indoor outdoor mist to refresh the skin. This is the bougiest facial mist of all time. I'm kind of obsessed.
B
I didn't know that it could do all these things.
C
I'm telling you, this is why I was losing my shit when I was messaging you. Like, where is this? I need this desperately. It sounds incredible.
B
Oh, wow. And you can, like, put it on your bike. You could put it on the stroller. This is so genius.
C
It's literally genius. And it says that it has a continuous or interval mist. So you can just have it misting all the live long day, or it can automatically shut off. It says up to 10 minutes of mist per fill tank. Obviously, this is smaller. It's handheld, so it's. You know, you're gonna have to refill it. But, like, what is that? When you're getting all of these things in one little tiny package? And then it has this cooling plate, which is like, the cryo element of all of this. And it can lower the skin temperature by up to 16 degrees Fahrenheit in seconds. So their whole thing is like, this is a fan. This is a cryo. This is a Mr. That is designed to be worn in scene. Yeah, it's gonna debut with seven shades and. But this is not sponsored. I need to be so clear about this. We disclose every sponsors. I freaking wish wish at this point. Do I should. I would freaking love that. But it's not. I'm just. I don't even have it yet, y'.
B
All.
C
Like, this is how excited. Yeah.
B
We don't even know what it feels like, wait, it's like, did they already sell out of the few colors?
C
I think so. So there are seven shades. And then you have accessories like a bike mount, a crossbody and wrist strap protective cases, and then a non slip shade sleeve that can help you extend how and where your chill pill fits into your life. Give it to me.
B
If they don't do some sort of campaign or partnership for Coachella, I feel like it's a missed up.
C
A missed.
B
A missed up.
C
So I saw Jules lebron post about this because she was like, I'm breaking up. Because she always has a fan, right?
B
Yeah, right.
C
And I was like, okay, this is incredible partnership strategy. Yeah, of course you go to Jules lebron. Of course you partner with her on this. So she's like, I have my shark chill pill. Totally agree. Festival season. I think the reason why this is so genius is they were like, okay, yes, we have the beauty people that love the fans. And by the way, this isn't even under shark beauty. I think it's just under. Yeah, the shark umbrella. I love that. Like I mentioned, if you're going through menopause, I think I'm perimenopausal. I'm going to be honest because I'm like getting night sweats. Are your ears itchy? My ears are not itchy.
B
Okay.
C
I have not gotten the itchy ears. I can't decide if I'm having night sweats because I'm keeping my AC pretty high to avoid the absolutely astronomical energy costs that have been going down in the state of California. So usually I like it to be at a cool 68, but I've been keeping it at 72.
B
That's probably the eco friendly version.
C
Yeah, yeah, the eco on my nest.
B
Yeah.
C
So I'm like, yeah, I think I'm perimenopausal. Cause I hate everybody and I'm sweating at night.
B
I don't think so. But I'm not a doctor.
C
I'm not a doctor and I. And I haven't been to a doctor to find out. So. So it's all speculation at this point. And the best part is there was a comment from somebody underneath the Instagram post when it was announced and they said, I heard that everyone going through menopause gets one for free. Oh my God.
B
No, it actually should be covered by insurance.
C
Hsa, fsa.
B
Oh, thousand percent come. If that's not the case, then we will be protesting.
C
You know what my dream would be? Let's have a pop up with Shark featuring the chill pill. And literally it's like, how can we prove that you're going through menopause?
B
You can get tested.
C
Like, is there a way things we don't know. I think you can get tested, but it's like you really know when you don't have your period anymore. How do you prove that? Like, you can't feel a little personal? Are you on your period? Have you had your period in the last year? You know what I mean?
B
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Everyone would benefit from coming to this pop up. And there could be like life size misters and coolers. Life size version of the chill pill.
C
We could just be giving away like to the first 500 people every day.
B
Okay.
C
A chill pill.
B
We will be reaching out to people.
C
I, I, I, I see the vision. I, I want this for everyone. I, I'm so, have you heard me this excited about something in a minute. Like, I, I'm so freaking excited about this. So again, we don't have it yet, but once we do, we will let you know. Maybe it sucks. We don't know, but we probably not. I don't think it will.
B
Shark products, always.
C
We love shark products. I opened up my cryoglow. That thing is frigging great.
B
Finally. Oh, yeah, yeah. And mine is always there. Everyone I zoom there. I was like, what is that?
C
I can't see it. Oh, there it is there. Oh, wow. It really is like the tragedy and comedy.
B
Yeah. I had a friend sleepover and she was like, I had to turn it. It was looking at me.
C
I know it gets a little creepy, but it is absolutely fabulous.
B
Yeah, I love. Okay, great. We need that we have some news to report. This article got me all riled up in a bad way.
C
Were you a victim of outrage?
B
It was upsetting, but like nothing that we didn't already know, but they confirmed it. So. We love the wire cutter here. Keurich, Los Angeles. We love the reporting that they do. And you know, it's like such thorough testing when they test products out. And a reporter of theirs named Rose Mara Lori. I believe that's how you pronounce your name. Sorry if it's not. She hired a lab to counterfeit test a dozen suspicious beauty products she bought online. And she found that every single one had a problem.
C
Wow.
B
Rose bought 12 beauty products from third party sellers on Amazon, ebay, Sheen and Walmart. And she sent them to a cosmetic chemist for testing. The cosmetic chemist's name is Rachel Johnson. She's the founder and chief chemist at the Charismatic Chemist, which is a cosmetic research and development lab in New Jersey. And Rachel found that every single product had an issue. It was either counterfeit, expired, contaminated, oxidized, used, or chemically different from the real version. So Rose bought not only these counterfeit products, but she also bought the authentic versions directly from the brands to do a side by side testing. And the chemist used something called FTIR spectrometer testing, which is a chemical fingerprinting method plus a 14 point sensory analysis. So they were extremely thorough comparing the products. Honestly, not that they needed to, because right off the bat, even just the packaging alone for some of these, you're like, this is not the same. Many of the products had very low chemical matches, some as low as 2%, not the same formula at all. And then even those that did match more closely had packaging discrepancies, texture differences, and signs of degradation. And one of the products that they really like kind of dove into was this Rhode peptide lip treatment. So Rose had bought one from Amazon, I think, you know, she tried to find third party sellers that had good reviews. Like she was trying to be a good, good reporter and like, not just get it from like a third party that had zero reviews, like she was going to one that people were actively buying from. And immediately the color of the packaging was different. The tube was longer, the tube was bloated, it was very full. And then when they squeezed the product out, the product was like a different color. It was, it was clear. And it had a 20% chemical variation, suggesting that it was fake or possibly contaminated. And the cosmetic chemist even said it could suggest microbial growth. Yes, that is absolutely disgusting. Also just so dangerous. They go on to say that U.S. customs seized 500,000 counterfeit personal care products in 2024. But that's actually very small compared to like fake bags, fake sunglasses, fake pharmaceuticals, which I'm like, oh my God, are we buying like, drugs, fake pharmaceuticals?
C
I know, I'm not. Some people are.
B
I hope you know. Right Again, our healthcare system is so fucked. And when people are just trying to buy medicine for themselves and they don't have money and they don't have, you know, I get it, I totally get it. But it's just so scary when you think about it. There are tens of millions of counterfeit products that are coming through the US every year. And a small amount of those are beauty. But this scary part is we are putting these products on our skin, on our face, on our lips, and they have been found to have bacteria, like I said, human waste, antifreeze, urine used as dye in fake fragrances, a fake bag Terrible. Obviously fake sunglasses, not great. But you're not putting those in your body the way that we are putting these fake road peptide lip treatments or worse on like young people that think that they're getting a discount. So it really just proved that when you are purchasing from these third party sellers, there is a very, very high chance that the product is not real. And they said that 60% of Amazon sales are through third party sellers, 95% of Walmart.com listings and basically all of ebay.
C
Yes. Okay, I wanted to comment on this. First of all, I absolutely love that they hired a lab. That is my dream. Oh my God.
B
If you had a Los Angeles lab.
C
No, if we had just boundless amounts of money, I would have a lab so that we could truly test some of this stuff. Specifically sunscreens for some of these claims. Because sunscreen testing is wildly expensive. And as we have mentioned in the past, we have a sunscreen problem, especially in the United States. I would love to have that. So kudos to wirecutter. Like this is a story that I am absolutely obsessed with. A B. If you go through the list of what Rose tested, she has a list of suspected fake products and where they were bought, what third party seller platform they were purchased from. Ebay is the most prevalent. And this is what I tell people. Do not buy product from ebay. Don't do it. I would not buy beauty products from Poshmark. I would not buy beauty. You just do not know because it's just some random person selling something they have. The likelihood of it being unsanitary in some way is extremely high.
B
Probably 100%.
C
This is not like vintage shopping, okay?
B
Exactly. It's totally different.
C
It is completely different than fashion. EBay, you can find some really great fashion finds I would never buy unless it's truly. I'm looking for like OG compact from a brand from the 1960s to like have on display.
B
Yes, right.
C
100 collecting. So for us I think ebay is just straight up a no go.
B
Sometimes the easiest way to refresh your look for spring is actually with accessories.
C
And Macy's just launched rebag, which means you can shop pre owned designer handbags right.
B
At Macy's, including things like Hermes and other major designer bags, which is pretty amazing.
C
I'm honest though. Like Hermes, it's. It's stunning. But realistically for my budget Coach Tabby, please get. Get me the coach Tabby. Coach really knows what they're doing over there. They also have a ton of spring accessories like layered necklaces, watches and Soft leather bags.
B
Yep. And of course, spring fragrances from brands like ysl, Jo Malone and Byredo.
C
Basically the finishing touches that make the outfit head over to Macy's. Now, Sarah and I have been pitched a million times to partner, to activate, to attend things with Sheen and we have always said no. We are sticklers for this. There are a myriad of issues with Sheen. Am I even saying it correctly?
B
I think Sheen, Sheen.
C
I don't know.
B
I actually had no idea that they were selling quote unquote, real beauty products. Like, I had no idea. Right.
C
And we know it was just clothes. Right. Because we have been in this industry long enough and we know the industry like the back of our hands. We know that Charlotte Tilbury does not sell on Shein. She has a few retailers, namely Sephora and Ulta. She does sell on Amazon, but that's
B
why Amazon has their verified like seller pages.
C
Yes. And I, I must bring this up. You guys did get upset with us for partnering with Amazon early last year, but we decided to partner with them on that specific episode because it was inform you guys. Because we know based off of Los Angeles Confidential where a lot of you shop. And I would say the majority of people are buying a lot of their products on Amazon, at least in our group.
B
Yeah. And definitely outside of that.
C
Well, 100%. But I think when we're talking about our listenership.
B
Right.
C
We were criticized for that partnership. We understood, we heard you. We personally felt that we were going to partner with them because it wasn't to even really promote that you should shop on Amazon. It was that if you're going to shop on Amazon, there are very specific ways that you need to shop there. A I think the return notification on these pages now that says this product has been widely returned. That is a great indicator. And we also say that you need to make sure that you're not buying from a third party seller on Amazon. Because Charlotte Tilbury sells on Amazon but she has a product page.
B
Yep.
C
So you need to really look and make sure that you're on the real brand's product page, that it's a verified brand page or verified, I guess retail collective that sells those products. But more so it needs to be the brand page. Walmart is another one we've discussed in the past where we have both had personal stories where we are seeing Tom Ford being sold on Walmart and it's definitely not under Tom Ford's discretion. They're not approving this. But it's a third party seller through Walmart. So you have to Be super meticulous these days, which sucks. When this story came out too, I was like, well, yeah, of course it's a third party seller. Like there's no guarantee that you're actually getting the real thing, even though it looks like it. Right. Perhaps that's a privileged point of view to have because we're in it and we know that this story clearly hit a huge number of people because it's gone extremely viral. But there were things too where they were like, pick, you know, pick which one's the fake and which one's the real one. What did you get? Right? And I was like, sarah and I would be able to nail this.
B
Yeah.
C
Because for example, that Rhode Peptide lip treatment, one thing that they called out in a social post was that on the product page for the third party seller, it doesn't call it a lip treatment. It's just like Rhode Lip Balm or something. So I think that's a giveaway. You should definitely look to make sure that the product name is correct. And B, the fake Rhode, it's longer. It would not have probably fit in our phone case the typography of the Rhode Peptide lip treatment. That was the counterfeit version. The way that it's on the actual package, it's sitting so close to that seal at the end that when you look at it, you can barely read the R and part of the H. And I know that the road team would not have approved that. You want to be able to look at the product and easily see what the name of it is. So it's little nuances like that that I think are important. But I absolutely loved this story. It was so, so good. And in our Slack channel, we've been asked to do something similar to this. Babes. If we could afford the lab, we'd be in that lab. We would all the livelong day. That would be amazing. But we do have several episodes where we talk about how to identify what fakes are. We do have that Amazon one that's probably the one that's the most easy to find. Yeah. And most thorough, which is from last year. I don't want urine on my face in any form.
B
Or antifreeze.
C
Yeah.
B
Or any sort of bacteria.
C
Yeah.
B
Listen, I get that people want to save a buck, but there are also so many great affordable brands that exist now. I don't know. It's. It's. Yeah, but this was just. It made me upset.
C
It made me upset reading it, but also jealous because it's such a good story.
B
I know. It's Such a good story.
C
It's just.
B
And all the different charts that they made too. Just like showing the supply chain and also like, yes, percentages, the breakdowns. It's so good. Brilliant.
C
Please go support this story at Wirecutter if you have the time. I want them to do more stuff like this. It's fabulous. Sarah, what Was your sweet 16 like?
B
Okay. My sweet 16, I had a birthday party at a Mexican restaurant and there was like dancing. Cute.
C
That's adorable. How many people were there?
B
There were a lot of people. There are a lot of people there. It was fine.
C
I love this for you as you know. Two days after Christmas, baby.
B
Yeah.
C
Really not getting a shine that I want in terms of a birthday party. But my parents said we will make it special. So we flew with my best friend Jennifer to New York to skate at Rockefeller center and have a little New York moment. And that's what I wanted for my birthday. Yeah.
B
So that was that.
C
That was my version of a sweet 16. However, I did watch my super sweet 16 and. Oh, me too. These birthdays and bar mitzvahs were akin to weddings.
B
Yeah.
C
Teyana Taylor was on my super sweet 16. I know, I saw that. Bonkers. Absolutely bonkers. Good for you, girl. Well, there were Sephora tweens and now there are Sephora bat mitzvahs. Sephora birthday parties.
B
I'm watching this one now.
C
Welcome to the world of beauty themed bar mitzvahs and birthdays and everything you could imagine that a teenager could want. The one you're watching is a road themed birthday party for a 13 year old. Her name is Ryan. And instead of road branding everywhere, it's Ryan branding in the road font everywhere. They had custom Ryan peptide lip treatment.
B
Oh my God. This is more fabulous than my wedding.
C
That's what I'm saying. They had mocktails, they had custom merch. This looks just like going to a beauty brand event in Los Angeles. I would not be able to tell if you were saying what's counterfeit. Which, which one of these is counterfeit. And you put a child's birthday party and a beauty event side by side. I wouldn't be able to tell. I'd be like, who the hell's Ryan? Well, I'm also.
B
Yeah.
C
And you're like fabulous.
B
I would love a. A tote bag. I wonder if they are hiring the same events. Obviously road has, you know, their own. I mean. Well, I don't know, maybe Ryan's parents
C
reached out to Lauren Ratner Trot attract
B
down Rhodes party planning team. This Is crazy.
C
This is Mindy Weiss level birthday. And Mindy Weiss is one of the most extravagant event planners on the planet. She does Everybody's wedding. Okay, 13, not even 16. 13. These videos are going extremely, extremely viral. Yeah. So that road one was just for a 13th birthday. It wasn't for a bar mitzvah. It wasn't for a sweet 16 or a graduation. There was another one, though, that went very viral because of who the mother was. So the founder of Love Shack Fancy threw a party for her daughter and her daughter's name is Scarlet. It was for her bar mitzvah and it was at the Plaza Hotel in New York. I mean, this is crazy. I saw the first video and it was the founder who. I deeply apologize. Her name is escaping me right now, but she's walking into it and I was like, this is not somebody's wedding. It was not. So Love Shack Fancy has taken over with the teen girls. I mean, everybody wants a Love Shack Fancy thing. My girlfriend has two nieces and she's like, they're like fighting over Love Shack Fancy clothes every day. But Scarlet has the pleasure of having her mom be the founder and creator of Love Shack Fancy.
B
What if Scarlet's like, I hate Love Shack Fancy.
C
Imagine Scarlet's like, like this, I want basketball shorts and a Mets game or something. Totally.
B
Yeah.
C
So if you look at this video that I posted in the note, somebody is there and she's getting to live paint. Which again, perfume bottles is something that
B
is offered to us at many beauty events that we attend.
C
Yes. And it's the Love Shack Fancy fragrance. Like, I'm watching this right now.
B
Wow. I'm actually speechless.
C
Are you watching this?
B
Yes, I'm speechless. The florals alone?
C
No, the florals and they just set this up. I mean, there's walls that they brought in. It is next level and at the Plaza Hotel.
B
And then I'm like, who are all these people in tuxedos? Surely these are not Scarlet's 13 year old friends and Plaza.
C
This is for the parents.
B
No, when your child has a bar mitzvah, it's the family. It's the family friends.
C
The Love Shack Fancy founder. She is all dolled up. I mean, this might as well be her second wedding, right?
B
It certainly looks like it.
C
It is absolutely stunning. The lighting, I mean, I'm just in awe. But I do find it to be so, so fascinating that now it's not like I want a Paris themed birthday party or quinceanera or whatever it is. You know what I mean? Like, it's like, I want it to be road themed.
B
I'm horrified.
C
BE has become the mainstream 15 years ago, 20 years ago. If you were like, I'm going to have a morphe themed party. People will be like, get the fuck out of here. Like, why?
B
Who cares, right?
C
This is crazy because there's also a skims one that I saw. No. And they had the whole skims logo. They had skims merch. I think they like bought skims in bulk and then had it so you could get your name embroidered on it. I mean, next level.
B
There was some article that came out like in the last couple of years about how kids parties specifically like, you know, baby toddler birthday parties were getting out of hand because of the influence of the Kardashians and the Jenners and how, you know, they go all out. But I completely forgot that like, you know, 13 to 16 year olds were also having birthday parties at this level. I just, I can't believe it.
C
I mean, this is as tale as old as time, right? My super sweet 16 existed for a reason. You know what I mean?
B
Exactly.
C
This is not like a new thing that people are starting to do or discover. But the themes, the themes have gotten so interesting to me. I'm wondering what we'll see next. So there was road, there was skims, there was love shack, fancy, there was Sephora. Do we think we'll see like a Rare. Rare's next 100%.
B
And then they'll have enough money surely to fly Selena out because these people are millionaire billionaires.
C
Brand founders are going to start getting paid for appearances at these teenage birthday parties. Like, imagine if Ryan had gotten Haley to her birthday party.
B
Maybe she did and we just didn't.
C
This could be a new income stream for these brand founders. I mean, like, make sure that people are obsessed with your brand to the point that they throw a party in your brand's honor and then get paid an appearance fee to show up.
B
Does anyone want us to come? We're available.
C
No, listen, we're cringe to these children. Are you kidding me?
B
I'll come to a 30th birthday. That sounds fun to me.
C
I love talking to teenagers because I just find them so interesting and I want to learn so, so much from them. And they know that. They're like, this bitch is such a try hard. She wants to know too much. I don't care. I just give me the information. Yeah, so unfortunately, I, I don't think I would be called on a PA to a mitzvah in New York. But I'm like. I'm literally looking around my desk. Okay. I'm like, what's next, Tatcha, with the purple?
B
Yep.
C
Attach a moment. They could have a beach themed one for Tower 28.
B
Yes. Yes.
C
They set up a huge tent on the beach.
B
I'm looking at my desk too. Unfortunately, I'm an elder millennial.
C
Chanel.
B
Has that not been done before?
C
I mean, let's be honest, probably. I'm looking around. Yeah. I think Rare has to be next. Like, and whoever does rare, you. You better be posting the hell out of it. I want to see every single bit of it.
B
Yeah, I'm. Yeah, I'm, like, looking around. What else?
C
And also, MTV may still exist if they would just rev up my super sweet 16 again.
B
Totally.
C
Just bring it back.
B
Bring back my sweet 16. Real world.
C
Real World. How does Real World not exist if
B
the reality shows that are existing now are doing so well? I'm like, Real World road rules.
C
Oh, my God. I know. I think. I think the challenge still is happening because I know some men that are deeply obsessed with it. So I think that is still a thing that's happening. But I need Real World back. But I don't think we can ever replicate what Real World was at that point, because I'm being fed Real World rewind.
B
Yeah.
C
Episodes.
B
And it was so problematic.
C
It was problematic in a way that. But then also, like, when you read the comments, they're like, this would not be able to happen now, but this was, like, truly a teachable moment for this person. There was a girl who grew up that didn't know anything about black people who was, like, using the N word literally. Two black people were like, babe, you can't say that.
B
No, for sure.
C
Why? They didn't mean it any certain way. And they're like, but you can't say that. And then they're, like, holding her hand to be like, you have been sheltered from the world. You do not understand. And then she was mad that her parents sheltered her so much.
B
No. So many of them, like, had, like, cut contacts with their family after going on the show.
C
No.
B
Because they would either, like, come out as gay or. Yeah, they realized their. Their family was racist. It was just such an incredible show. I loved it so much. I was more of a Real World girl than Road Rules, but I watched it all.
C
I love New Orleans. I loved Vegas.
B
Ruthie.
C
New York. Ruthie. Oh, my God. Irene. Seattle.
B
Oh, my God.
