Welcome back to the Green Industry Podcast. I'm Paul Jamison down here in beautiful, sunny Florida. Today we're going to talk about time management because I just listened to two audiobooks this past week about time management. Is it something that as an entrepreneur I've been struggling with finding enough hours in the day? I like to golf. I want to include that in my day. I like to work out exercise like strength training. How do I have enough time to do that in the day? I like to walk. Beautiful walking down here in Florida. How do I get enough time to do that and keep all of my team members going on their task and keep all of my customers very, very happy? It's a lot, right? So what if I told you that we could master our time better and that is going to truly unlock us to the next level in our business. I was talking with one of my coaches recently about my business and they're like, I think you need better time management, Paul, because I'm being stretched thin and I'm not really reaching my full business potential. So what I did is I dived in to two powerful audiobooks, one that I've listened to before, but I knew I needed a little kick in the rear end, so I listened to it again and then I listened to a fresh new book that I've never listened to. So these two books I'm going to kind of unpack. It's kind of like a Book review episode today of no BS Time Management for Entrepreneurs by Dan Kennedy. I've talked about that book before on the podcast. I listened to it again this week and it was so timely, it was so good to, to get me refocused. And I also listened to an audiobook by Cal Newport called Deep Work. So in this fast paced world of entrepreneurship, really effective time management, it's, it's crucial, it's, we have to conquer this if we're truly going to scale our businesses, optimize our revenue, stay ahead of the competition, we have to master our time. So in today's podcast, I want to basically just share my fresh takeaways because I just got done listening to these books. So we're going to start with the no BS Time Management for Entrepreneurs. Before we dive into that real quick, my buddy Naylor's hosting an event, if you're listening to this before, June 26th and 27th, a year 2026, he's hosting an event in Richmond, Virginia at the Omni Hotel there in Richmond. Good old Omni. And it's all about how to increase your profits. So Eric Triplett, the Pond Digger is going to be there speaking. Joey Koberly, Kevin Salters, John Pajak, Naylor Taliaferro. Get your rear end to Profit Accelerator Live. If you want to know your numbers better grow your profits. Fantastic lineup. That event is going to be fire, fire, fire. So again, the dates on that one, June 26, June 27, and in person event, Richmond, Virginia. It's called Profit Accelerator Live. And you can save big on your tickets too by using the promo code Paul. So when you're signing up for that, it says on the registration, what's your promo code? And you can type in Paul. Alrighty, let's start with no BS Time Management for Entrepreneurs. So first of all, Dan Kennedy is probably my favorite author. He's very bold, direct, straightforward and hilarious. But it's, it's just the more books you read or listen to him from him, you'll be like, man, this guy's, this guy is a comedian, but he's also a very, very successful businessman. So my friend Dr. Frank Holloman turned me on to Dan Kennedy years ago and I just started binge watching or binge listening to his audiobooks. And he's, he's incredible. So he talks about identifying the core problem in our time management. And most of us, we spend, or he is the word waste time on low value tasks. And so we really need to take inventory in a given day. Where is our time going? And I'm going to just get the, you know, my main takeaway from both Dan Kennedy's book Time no BS Time Management for Entrepreneurs and Deep Work. They both talk about identifying the core problem of wasting time on distractions. And so they give so many examples and drive home their point so strongly in both of their books. But I had to do a lot of introspection this past week and really look into my life and figure out where are those time vampires. That's what Dan Kennedy calls them. Time vampires. Are they email? You just pick up your phone and you click on that email icon or are you getting picking up your phone and clicking on the Instagram or is it TikTok or is it Facebook or is it Twitter or X? Is it something else? Where, where is the distraction the enemy of what Cal Newport calls deep work? And so I'm telling you, my friend, I'm fired up listening to these two audiobooks back to back. I got done listening to no BS Time Management for Entrepreneurs. And he had referenced Deep Work by Cal Newport, I think multiple times in his book. And I've heard Jonathan Ptochnik use the phrase before deep work. So I was like, you know what, I'm gonna check out this book. And I was like, I'm glad I did. It was really good. So number one, my main takeaway of listening to these incredible books about time management and this is kind of common sense, but it's good refresher is to ask are there low value tasks or, and or distractions in my life that have been time vampires? And my conclusion was social media has got to go. I got to quit it 100% now. What I mean by that is I have to quit consuming it. No scrolling whatsoever. And I've started this now. So I have a, I have a batch time when I get on there and I make my creative productive post, like I actually share something valuable with the world. I have a specific time twice a day in my schedule where it's time to create content. And in that time I'm only focused solely on creating good content. That's adding value to whoever will consume this piece of content. My goal is that they would be better off for it. And so if I do open the apps, social media apps, in that batch of, you know, batch of time of deep work, it's not to scroll, it's not to look at, you know, what so and so had for lunch. It's not to look at what so and so anything about anybody. I'm, I'm not scrolling. I'm I'm making my content, I'm uploading it and I'm getting out of there. And it's been crazy how many times I've just picked up my phone and like I accidentally opened, you know, I accidentally opened Instagram and I, and then I got convicted and I'm like, I'm done. I should just quickly turn my phone, you know, close it out, got out of there because I'm focused on high impact activities that drive business growth. If I could summarize Dan Kennedy's book, and I've listened to this thing multiple times, all right, they say it takes like seven or eight times until you really get it deep down inside of you. Dan Kennedy, he lives this thing, okay? Now he's, he's an older man now and you know, he's kind of towards the tail end of his life because of, you know, just old age. He's just old. But he's, he accomplished so much in his life, became a multi, multi, multi millionaire. But it's because he was focused on high impact activities that actually move the needle in business growth. And so he talks a lot about the Pareto principle, which we've talked about on this podcast before. The 8020 rule. So coming up after this break, we hear a quick word from today's show sponsors. I want to share how the 8020 rule impacts our business growth and our time management and share my key takeaways from both this incredible audiobook called Deep Work and the no BS time management for entrepreneurs. I'm going to share that coming right up. Crest Commercial is the only solution for commercial landscapers to convert to electric with the power of gas, no downtime. Have you ever felt like you're drowning in scattered quotes, schedules and chasing payments that Never come easy. I've been there with you. I used to be a truck in the truck. Completely disorganized and constantly chasing payments. But then I started using jobber back in 2019 and it was a complete game changer for my business. Still using it today. I love it and recommend it to all my coaching clients. Now Jobber is an all in one business app. Software where you can store customer information, send quotes and invoices, schedule your appointments, and even collect payments. You ready to simplify your business operations? Check the link in the show notes and use my special Jobber link and try it for free. You won't look back. All right, so the 8020 rule is sometimes look at your life. Perhaps 80% of your profits are coming from 20% of your customers. And so Dan Kennedy's talking about why are you spending time on social media scrolling and neglecting serving these customers? Even better. And perhaps what would it actually look like to eliminate 80% of your customers, the ones that aren't making you the money and getting more customers like those 20% that are crushing or serve those 20%, you know, those, those few customers that bring in all this money. How can you serve them better? How can you get more customers like that? Well, when we do this introspection, we'll find, man, I've been wasting time over here with, I could have spent that time building my business. So Dan, in his book, he talks a lot about delegation. How can I delegate things properly to somebody who can do it better than me so that I can focus my time on, on doing what I do best and then having other people do things that they do best and creating this dynamite team. So he talks a lot about utilizing basically any, any automation tool that you can to streamline repetitive tasks. We should be doing that. And I shout outs to Jobber, the CRM I recommend on this podcast. I do that for my invoicing, scheduling for, for billing, sending out quotes, getting paid. All of that is streamlined through Jobber. I've been using AI, I've been using. You can use so many different types of AI, but I've been using AI in so many ways. And I'm gonna start talking about that on my podcast down the road in near future because I'm still kind of tinkering with what works best for me. But AI is amazing ways, has amazing ways to Utilize automated tools to stop doing so many repetitive tasks and allow the software, allow the technology to do this stuff for us. And I need to focus on what truly matters to significantly increase my revenue. And if you don't know what that is, then we need to figure that out. What, what. When I work my day, what can I do in my business? I'm working on my business. I'm working in my business. I'm do. I'm on my. I'm working on my business, and I'm working in my business. All right, but what can I be doing that's going to be increasing revenue significantly? What can I be doing that truly matters? And so basically, what I took away from the concepts in these books is that first of all, start identifying with the 8020 rule of who are your 20% best customers? Who, who are your customers that you're making big profits on that you're doing really well with? Once you've identified them, is there any perhaps more revenue that could come from those customers? There might be. And then how can you get more customers like that top 20? And how can you start, you know, in some ways maybe having to get rid of some of those other lower customers, lower profit customers or headache customers to focus on the good customers? So what I've done, and I'm not going to name names here and call out customers or whatever, but I literally made a spreadsheet and I put down all my customers and I put down how much revenue each customer drives and brings in and things of that nature. And I realized, man, I'm spending some time with these customers that are not that, you know, not that profitable. I mean, they're profitable, but not by a lot. And they're taking up so much of my time, they gotta go. And I gotta give more effort to making sure there's incredible retention from my top customers and then bringing in new customers like them. So anyway, Cal Newport talks about blocking out time in your calendar for deep work sessions where you get dialed in and you work on things that actually move the needle financially. I would highly recommend listening to both these audiobooks. No bs Time Management for Entrepreneurs and then. And then Deep Work by Cal Newport. These, these books are, are absolutely fantastic. In, in Deep Work, he talks about getting into these states of flow, these deep work sessions that are free from interruptions. So I'm kind of glad I listened to Dan Kennedy's book first, even though I've listened to it before, because Dan Kennedy really talks about what are these interruptions? What are these distractions? And of Course, Cal Newport brings up social media. That one just keeps coming up again and again and again. But even email can be an interruption. And by all means, notifications are a tremendous disruption. So I, I on my phone, I have them all turned off. It doesn't notify me if, you know, I get a new follower on Instagram. Well, cool. But I, it ain't, it ain't, it ain't. I turned it off on my phone for Instagram to send me any notifications. All the apps, I don't get any notifications, none of them. I turn them all off because I don't want my phone to ding. And then, oop, I gotta look. Oh, you know, Johnny just ate a Subway sandwich. Well, whip dee doo now. Now my focus got off of my deep work. So how could I get myself implementing these specific times? I've set times aside for deep work sessions. So good. I've identified my best customers. I'm coming up with ways to serve them better. I'm taking, I'm looking at my notes here from everything I learned from these books. So here's the pitfalls to avoid. This is, these are my, my three main takeaways. I need to stop over committing to tasks that don't align with my business goals. So I'm going to say that again. Quit over committing to tasks that don't align with my business goals. Scrolling through Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, you name it, Twitter. That does not in any way, shape or form align with my business goals. So I've identified and I'm not publicly going to share my business goals or my top customers or all of that. It's irrelevant. The point is I know who my best customers are, how I can serve them better, how I can get more customers just like them. Those are my business goals in a nutshell. So anything that's not related to that, I don't need to be doing. I need to delegate those tasks to people who can do them better than me. And I need to focus my best effort on really moving the needle and growing my business. Number two, this is the biggest mistake that I was making. I think a lot of us are making as entrepreneurs. It's failing to set boundaries around our work time when it's time to work, like Cal Newport says, it's time to do deep work. We should be working when we're at work, not working. I'll check Instagram work out. Let me check this all over the place. And, and they shared stu studies of how like it's an eight hour work day but you're really only working like two or three hours because you're taking bathroom breaks, you're checking social media, you're taking your break for this, just all of this, all of this nonsense. What would it look like when we actually work? That we're doing deep work and we have boundaries around our work, that it's done with efficiency, it's done with excellence. Number three, takeaway. And again, I feel like I got burnt out. That's what led me to these two books. I was talking with Naylor, I was talking with some other my friends, mentors, and I didn't use the word burnout, but I used, I stretched thin. I got a lot on my plate. Words like that, and they all pointed out to me, you got to get a better grip here of doing time management. So one thing I realized I was neglecting was self care. And neglecting self care can lead to burnout. So I'm more intentional now about making sure I'm eating more frequent and healthier foods. I'm going on a lot more walks for exercise and I've gotten back in a good workout routine where I'm doing muscle training and weight training and lifting weights. And I got a system, right? Like one day is back and triceps and then usually a little core at the end and, and one day's chest and then one day shoulders and then one day's legs and, and some of those days at the end I'll do some core and I just kind of keep going through, you know, back day and, and, and are, you know, back in triceps. And the next day, you know, I might be doing chest and then next I might be doing legs and core and then, and then shoulders and I'm, I'm sticking to it. And I'm, I'm going to the gym. I went to the gym this morning. I went on a walk already today. I'm eating healthy, I'm taking care of, I'm taking care of myself, which can help lead to or prevent burnout and get me in better, better focus. So when I do do my deep work and I got my distractions turned off, I'm giving my best effort. So anyway, I want to share enough of these books with you to say go listen to them to your by yourself. Because as I, and I would start with the no BS Time Management for Entrepreneurs. That is, that book's a, as the kids call it, a banger. That book is so good. No BS Time Management for Entrepreneurs by Dan Kennedy. And unfortunately, he didn't read the audiobook. He, he had a narrator read the audiobook. So it's not in Dan's voice, it's in the narrator's voice. But the narrator did a good job. And I've read so many Dan Kennedy books or listened to them. I know his like I can imagine Dan reading it because his personality is in his writing, so strong. But anyway, I would listen to that audiobook and it's going to help you to basically avoid this mistake of trying to do everything yourself and open your eyes to delegating tasks. Right. There's a popular book by Dan Martell about buying back your time. But essentially, and I ain't calling Dan Martell out saying he stole Dan Kennedy's book, but it's. Dan Kennedy basically wrote that book years ago called no BS Time Management for Entrepreneurs which is essentially buying back your time by delegating. It's. It's buying back your time by basically prioritizing your tasks effectively and having time management and really focusing on building your business, on doing things that are going to drive business growth, grow your revenue. There's high impact activities or income producing activities as Dan Kennedy calls it, where you're, when you're doing this, it's actually generating income in your business. The more you focus on generating income in your business, the more money that's in your business. The problem is so many of us are distracted with things that aren't really moving the needle of increasing revenue in our business and a lot of repetitive tasks that if we really were honest with ourself could be done with the software, with the technology and in some cases with a person. But definitely automate, you know, automatic automation. Automation, that's a tough word. I was trying to say itemizes, but I don't think that's a word. But you know what I mean. Automating, right? That's a word. Mr. Producer. Automation. There's tools out there to help you streamline all this stuff. There's people out here. That's the advanced tip, is get a system built where we are guarding our time and our time is being spent so effectively. So I hope this has helped you again. The titles of the books are Deep Work by Cal Newport and no BS Time Management for Entrepreneurs. I listened to both of them this past week and I've never in my life been this dialed this much boundaries, this focus like this. Things were furniture was rearranging in my brain about who my best customers are, who my ideal customers are, how I can generate more revenue in my business. And honestly I had an honest conversation with me about what my time vampires are. And they may be different, you may have different time vampires in your life, but at the end of the day, we need to get those time vampires away and get dialed in on what matters most in our life. And you have to set those priorities, what matters most to you. But I know what my priorities are and I'm setting my schedule to prove. Hey, my schedule is aligning with my priorities and my time management is showcasing that I'm focused on my priorities. And one of those priorities that I'm, I'm unashamed about is driving business growth. I want to grow my business. I want to earn more money. I want to be productive. Remember the parable of the talents? The guy got one, the guy got two. The guy got five. I want to be the person who takes what's entrusted to me and I make the most of it. I get the most out of it. I'm as productive and multiplying and growing as possible. Therefore, I need to focus on high impact activities and get rid of all the time vampires. So anyway, those books will help you. I don't know how good my synopsis was because I know how fired up I am inside right now and how dialed in I am. And if I can in any way, shape or form encourage you to improve your time management. I was a mess. I was stretched thin. I was burned out. I was all over the place, my friend. I'm telling you, these two, two books, these concepts of deep work, this concept of really dialed in time management, it's actually really unlocked some things for me and I'm really excited for this new season of my life with new boundaries, new goals and disciplined time management. So thanks for tuning in to today's program. I appreciate it. Hope to catch you on the next one. Peace.
