Welcome back to the Green Industry Podcast. I'm Paul down here in beautiful, sunny Florida, where it is beautiful and it is sunny and I'm loving it. Well, if you own a lawn care landscaping business, you know how easy it can be to get caught up in the hustle, the spring rush, the busyness of customers wanting our services. But today we're gonna explore a vital concept that can actually enhance your productivity and wellbeing, and that is prioritizing a day of rest. Yesterday, my good friend Naylor Talia Farrow essentially rebuked me. He, he sent me a voice note and was basically like, you got, you gotta, you gotta do better job of managing your time, Paul. Cause I'm all over the place. Thankfully, I'm got some amazing opportunities and business is booming. And it's like, this opportunity is going well. This opportunity is going well. People want me to do this, people want me to do that. It's like. And Naylor essentially was like, all right, we got, we gotta get you on a structure system where you need boundaries. And then anything outside that boundary, you gotta say no. And like, everything you were saying to me, I was like, I know, I knew all this stuff. How did I get, how did I get distracted from this? So I had a little reset last evening of really looking at my calendar. I literally have my calendar in my, my hands here. And I'm sticking to a new program here where I am going to stop working seven days a week, even though I like work and it's fun and things are busting at the seams. But I'm going to take a step Back to have a day to rejuvenate, because that's beneficial for everybody that my life touches, and it's essential. So let's dive into this today. Number one, I have some notes I wrote down. And again, folks, this is my life. I'm sharing with you what I'm really going through here behind the scenes. And I'm grateful for friends like Naylor who recognize the burnout, the fatigue, the decreased productivity, the neglect in personal health and family time that I was experiencing. And it was almost like I couldn't even recognize it. I was just calling. Naylor and I talk on the phone and we send voice notes back and forth to each other. And Naylor could kind of hear the burnout, the fatigue, the frustration of what I was going through. And the solution, one of the solutions is I need to get back to a day of rest, or what the Bible calls a Sabbath day. This actually gets referenced in the first book of the Bible, Genesis. It says, by the seventh day, God had finished the work he had been doing. So on the seventh day, he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it, he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. So it took God six days to create everything. The. The sky, the stars, the moon, the sun, the oceans, the mountains, the humans, the animals, the whole nine. The. The whole. The whole thing. What. What a. What a what a work week. Right? What'd you do this week? Well, I. I made. I created the sun, and then I create. Well, I don't know what order of sequence the thing went, but it created the moon and all these stars and, and the galaxies and then these beautiful Appalachian Mountains and then the Rocky Mountains and then the Smoky Mountains and the beautiful Amazon and, you know, not the store, but like the, you know, the place out where this nature and all these beautiful, beautiful Mount Everest, the oceans, all of that. And then God made the people the whole thing. And then on the seventh day, he rested. Exodus 20 says, Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath day to the Lord your God. So if you run a business, it's important to recharge your physical and mental energy. If our phones don't get plugged into the charger, eventually, at least my phone does this. When it. When the battery starts getting down to like 8%, 7%, it starts getting all won. And then eventually it gets to 6%, 5%, 4, 3, 2, 1, goodbye. And it's Gone until I recharge it. And in our life, if we're not careful, our mental energy will start getting drained, our physical energy will start getting drained, our emotional energy will start getting drained. And, and my tendency is when I get, when I get drained, I start getting irritated, I start getting a little grumpy, I start getting a little good. Right? So almost everything will work again if you just unplug for a day and reset and recharge. Now talk. I wrote this in my notes. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but there's a, there's another issue of people out there that are lazy and they need to learn how to roll up their sleeves and get to work and get after it. But that's not the crowd I'm talking about today. Because if you're listening to a podcast about how to grow a successful lawn care business, my thought is, you're already a go getter. My thought is you already know what it's like to leave your house, get out there, serve customers, make as much money as you can, come home and serve your wife and kids well, and live a good life. And so my goal in sharing this today is because Naylor was helping me recognize that I was getting unbalanced. I wasn't, I wasn't giving a hundred percent effort at my work because I was so fatigued and exhausted and worn out. And I was like, I gotta get my edge back. I gotta get my focus back. And I realized with Naylor, talking to me about boundaries is the way I'm going to implement this, is I'm going to work hard for six, six days, and then I'm going to choose a day that works best for me, and I'm not going to plan any activities on that day except relaxing. That's it. Relaxing. What's my goal today? Relax now. My day at the moment. And again, this may change. I have friends that, they're like, hey, when that sun goes down Friday evening till Saturday evening, forget about it. That's their day of rest. And that's great if that's what the 24 hour period you choose for me in this season, I'm choosing Sundays. So it's Sunday morning, Sunday afternoon, Sunday evening. I'm relaxing now. I do go to church on Sunday evenings. So it's kind of like, you know, I do have something scheduled, but that's, that's part of my rejuvenation, that's part of my reset is, is doing that. But my new rule, all right, no, I'm disconnecting On Sunday on my, on my day of rest, no emails, no business calls, no business planning, no business this, that or the other. I am going to take a week to reflect on my previous week and, and see what I can learn. Reflection is very, very powerful and I'm gonna, I'm gonna spend the day with gratitude, you know, counting my blessings and preparing my, my mind and my body to hit the next work week hard. Now again, don't email me and tell me. Well, if you really want to look at the, the scriptures, Paul, the, the Sabbath day starts Friday sundown and it goes till Saturday night sundown. It ain't Sundays. You're correct. You are correct. But I think, I think this is just my opinion here. I think if we follow the principle of work six and rest one, we're in good shape. And you determine. I'm determining what my six work days are and what my one, one day off is. My, pardon me, one day off is. That didn't sound right anyway and that's the protocol that I'm following. Now if you feel a conviction that you should be off on Saturdays and work on Sundays or vice versa, whatever it is to that's point for us to have that argument is just a waste of your time. Waste of my time. The point is we need a balance that when we're working our customers are getting served at the highest level and when we're, we're, we're resting, we're truly disconnected from all work related tasks and maximizing the charge. Did you know not every charge is the same? I had one of these phone chargers that was ghetto it it anyway I got it and it's cheap and I put it in my car and I had my, my phone connected to CarPlay and all of a sudden it stopped working and I kept replugging it out like it's plugged in. It's. What, what is going on? Why is this thing not working? And I did a little research and I found out that in order for my phone to connect to Apple CarPlay there need data needs to be transferred in the charger that I had. It was only like intended for charging, but it wasn't able to transfer the data. I needed to get like an actual charger from Apple to you know, carry the goods from my phone to the interface in my car. So my point in saying that is I'm gonna be very careful here, Mr. Producer. She said just say it. All right, I'll shoot you straight. There's people that. I gotta be nice, Mr. Producer. All right, I'M gonna be. We have folks, we have a lot of people listening to my podcast around the world and I sometimes I step on people's toes, crunch, crunch. And then they get mad at me. But not, not everybody gets the same out of their Sabbath day, we'll put it that way. If, if you're just taking a day off work and you're not mowing any yards that day, but you're, you're, you're, you're not, you're not resting properly. You're. The amount that you get recharged might not be as much as somebody else who they work their rear end off for six days, they're physically exhausted. You work hard, you're going to get tired. It's, it's inevitable. No one, none of us are, are Superman where you work all the time, you're like, yeah, I just feel, you know, let's, let's go do 100 push ups after. You work really hard, you get tired and you get into that day of rejuvenation and you really rest, you really disconnect, you sleep in for as long as you can sleep in until the kids start banging on you. Whatever, whatever wakes you up, you truly disconnect, you truly rest. And I honestly don't think watching, you know, 10, 10 shows on Netflix all day, I mean that, that doesn't rejuvenate me. I would rather there's things I like to do that rejuvenate and, and that's different for everyone else. But my point is get just like my phone needs a good charger and it really needs connection. I want to get my phone to 100%. I don't want to charge it to like 17% and then be back in the same predicament. I want to charge my phone to 100%. It's important that we have our day and we get as much rejuvenated rest as possible. And the other thing I was going to say where I didn't want to step on people's toes is there's other people out there. They're just, they're not working the six, they're not, they're not plowing the land for six days. They're not working hard for six days. They're just a little bit here, a little bit there. I don't know why it's not working, Paul. I don't know why. And they start getting mad at me. Well, you're lazy. That's the problem. So we can't be lazy, but we also can't overindulge in our diligence to where we're working seven days a week and we're neglecting this ancient principle of a Sabbath day. So we're going to hear a quick word from today's show sponsors and I'm going to go ahead and share some very, very practical implementations of this coming right up. Real quick before we move on. All right, so let's talk practical implementations of the Sabbath day and why this matters for your business. When you're at a hundred percent, that can help improve our mental clarity, our decision making skills. I don't know about you, but when I get tired and not fully rested, my decision making skills sometimes slip and aren't as sharp. I want to be sharp, I want to make sharp decisions. I want to really. Have you ever taken on a job and then it's an absolute nightmare headache of a job and the whole time you're like, how did I, how did I miss this? Well, we might not have been sharp. If we're, if we're sharp, we can say, whoa, whoa, whoa, the sirens are going off. This customer is a pain in the butt. I ain't taking this job or that price is too low. I got to raise the price on this work if I'm going to do this. I'm really, you know what I'm saying? Sharp decision making skills. When we're, when I'm talking about myself here, I don't know about you, but when I'm fully rested and I'm, I'm ready to rock and roll, it creates my cre, it enhances. That's the word I was trying to pull from my creativity. So when I'm absolutely exhausted, and all I can think about is going home and taking a shower and getting all this grass out of my body and, you know, getting a nice clean shower and going to bed. Like, I'm not, I'm not the most creative. I'm just thinking about, oh, I'm tired. Well, when I'm, when I'm rested and I'm clean and I'm fresh, that's when I get a lot of my, my most creativity. So it's actually, for me, when I do honor a Sabbath day, when I do take a day of rest, a lot of times it's a day full of creativity. And I, I think it's okay to write. I mean, if, if, if, if you're, if you're in a creative flow on the Sabbath day and you want to, you know, get. I have a little yellow pad. If I want to write something down, I might not fully, like, draw out a business plan and work on it on a Sabbath day, but I might write something down like, oh, yeah, I had this idea. And then, and then during the work week, I'll then put traction in action towards that creativity I got on my day of rest. And then also think about your relationships. If you have employees, if you have a wife, if you have children, if you have any parents, siblings, neighbors, friends. The healthier we are, the better we can serve the people around us. There's a, a saying about, in farming to take rest. Like in the farming world, a field that is rested gives a more beautiful crop than a, than a field that is stressed. I, I grew up in Ohio and they talk about letting the land rest. So as I share all of this, I want to encourage you to start small and pick a day and just try it. You know, this upcoming week, just pick your day. Saturday, Sunday. I mean, typically, if you own a lawn care landscaping business, unless you're doing commercial a, nobody wants you at their house on Sunday. So I, I kind of think as, as lawn care and landscaping guys, that would be the most ideal Sabbath day. But I, I have two friends live here locally and both of them, they're adamant Saturday's their day off and they just, they unplug on Saturdays. So as we wrap up, I encourage you pick your day and take action. Like, don't take action like you work on it. They would take action that you're gonna, you're gonna take action by. You're going to actually have a day of rest where you're not doing any emails, you're not mowing any yards, you're not sending out shout outs to Jobber. I love, I love Jobber. But you ain't, you ain't up in Jobber on Sunday sending out quotes, sending out invoices. You're not texting your customers. You're unplugged for a day. You pick the day. But then take that boundary line and draw a boundary line and say, I'm going to observe this day as my Sabbath and I'm going to reset. I'm going to focus on getting my, well being back to 100%. Just like my phone. If I'm going to plug that thing in the charger, going to feel a lot better when I take it out of the charger and it's at 100%, it's going to work better that hard. Reset. Even, even, even electronics. Like you turn a, like, if you're having problems with your computer, your phone, a lot of times the first place to start is do like a, do a deep restart. Like, like just turn the, like, if your computer's being wonky for me, I'll just turn it down, turn party, turn it off, go unplug it from the wall, let that thing just rest. And then we're gonna plug it back in, crank it back up, and sometimes it just fixes itself, it starts working again. My phone's the same way. I live in Florida. It gets hot down here. Sometimes if my phone gets so hot it overheats. It literally would just turn off and a little message with like a temperature thermometer thing is on the screen and it won't even turn on. It's hot. Thing needs cooled off, it needs rested. Well, our bodies are the same way. So let's embrace the Sabbath day, not just take a few hours. I'm talking invest a whole day in our health, in our relationships, and ultimately in our business. And for me, I'm taking, I'm taking my Sabbath day to really reset spiritually and make sure if there's any areas in my life I got off track the previous week. I'm back, I'm back aligned with the principles from the Bible that I try to yield my life to remember. Rest is not a luxury. It's a necessity really for any human being. But for us as business owners, we have responsibility, we have customers that are looking to us to serve them and they're paying us money. We want to keep them happy, right? Happy customers. We have team members who they want a leader who is poised, is confidence, is confident, is healthy, is in control. Meaning we're, we're, we're running our business with excellence. That's very hard to do when we're tired. That's when things get sloppy. So rest is not a luxury, it's a necessity for a sustainable business. So I hope that this has helped you. I have my calendar right here and I'm going to try to do a much better job of resting one day a week so that those other six I'm more effective. Thanks for listening. Hope to catch you on the next episode.
