So these are the people involved in this case. We have Aaron. Oh, why did it say Trudy? That's her middle name. Aaron and Simon Patterson. This is them. They are separated at the point that all this happened. We will get a little bit more into their backstory. Simon's parents, Don and Gail Patterson, two of the dining guests. And then two of the other guests were Heather and Ian Wilkinson. Gail and Heather are sisters. So this is Simon's aunt and uncle and his parents. And then this is the. The couple at the center who have been separated for several years when all of this goes down. Any questions about that?

It's crazy. It's crazy. And I. Like I was saying to you before we started, I am still not entirely sure why the hell she did this. It doesn't make sense to me. And we'll see why.

If so, her defense team did not argue that very well. And they were. Yeah. So I don't know, but part of me has a little bit of that. But then I remember other pieces of this and I'm like, okay, she definitely did it. So I will present that to you guys and you can decide. So here's the general timeline. 2004, Aaron and Simon meet. She's working at. For the RSPCA Australia. They're both working for the city in a suburb of Melbourne. Melbourne. And they start dating. So they've been together a while.

I had a dream last night that I dropped poisonous mushrooms on the carpet and my dogs were trying to eat it and I was trying to get it out of their mouths. So protecting my brain. Oh, they absolutely got a piece. And I was freaking out. Okay, so 2006, they've been together for a couple years. Aaron inherits $2 million.

[Harley]

Well, there's your motive.

[Kate]

Well, but, but not really. It's that. That's what doesn't make sense to me. She's the one who had the money. So she inherits the money from her grandmother who passes away, and it's paid to her over an eight year period starting in 2007. My first thought was, okay, did she also poison her grandma? But that's not clear. And she didn't have any, really any evidence of looking into poisoning people until much later. So I think she just had money in her family because she makes more money too later on. So Simon and Aaron get married in 2007, and they decide to move to Pith Perth, which is very far away from their family. Aaron considers Simon's family her family. She's kind of estranged from her mom, but for some reason, and I was not able to find out why, they moved over 2,000 miles west of Melbourne. And while they were there, Aaron ran a secondhand bookshop because, you know, money was not an object at the time with the inheritance. And then while they were there, she gave birth to their first child, their son. So that's 2007-13. They're living way out here away from everybody.

You got. You got money, you could buy the house. You got a couple extra bucks to do whatever with, and then you just get a job doing something you like.

[Kate]

I know, it's pretty sick. I've always thought about running a bookshop.

[Ethan]

And then also, you know, you've seen like shows like Ozark and stuff, sometimes you give the money to family members or who knows what, you know, it gets all crazy.

So they had this thing planned where the way that he would pay out family members and stuff as like a means of paying out people.

[Harley]

They work. Whatever job, they work. He pays triple the salary.

[Kate]

Because when people stop working, they start to up. So keeping working is important. I always thought about how chill it would be to just work at GameStop as a manager for like three. Three times the amount of money.

[Ethan]

That's double what I was. Double what I was making as a teacher.

Yeah. Period. That don't pay, unfortunately. Yeah, I mean that's. To me that's the dream is, you know, to be able to just do whatever you want. And so that's what they were doing out there. But then when she got pregnant, they decided to move back to. When did they do that? Okay. They decide to move back to Melbourne. But first, very, very soon after they get married, cracks start to show. Only two years into their marriage, they start doing trial separations. They do multiple short term separations between 2007 and 2015. They are on again, off again. Basically right after the birth of their first child, everything kind of just disintegrates. But they keep trying to stay together, keep trying to make it work. And in the midst of all of

that, why were they, why were they not going to be together? They were, they fell out of love or something.

[Kate]

Yeah, they just, they're, they're just, they just couldn't make it work. They didn't really like each other.

[Ethan]

They were like, let's try it. Let's try a kid. One last shot. Let's. Let's do the kid thing before we.

[Harley]

And wouldn't you know it, the kid fixed it.

[Harley]

That's what I was gonna say. Yeah. Usually when you have kids to save the marriage, it works.

[Kate]

Yeah, and it did. Everything ended up great for these people.

[Harley]

In this case, one of them ended up dead from drinking poison mushrooms.

[Kate]

So yeah, so they decided to move back to Melbourne and they drove instead of flying. They drove the 2,000 plus miles, like through the outback, having like this family adventure with their son. Clearly trying to like stave off divorce, it seems.

Four years old. And she was pregnant with their second child, their daughter. And then they, yeah, they packed up. 2013, they drive back and Aaron said it took them a few months to actually get back and like settle in. They went to New Zealand for a little while and then they stayed with Simon's parents, Don and Gail for like six weeks. So things were good with the in laws. Like it wasn't weird. She said it was cramped in that all three of us, her and Simon and the sun were in one room. But it didn't matter because Don and Gail were so welcoming. It was really a good experience. So 2013, from all outside appearances, things look fine. Like they're co parenting. They might be on and off, but you know, it's working, sort of. And then they land back in Melbourne. And then Aaron makes some more money, more money comes in for her. Her mother passes away in 2019. Who's her last living?

She got 2 for 2mil for her grandmother or who. How did she get the 2 mil?

That was from her grandma was a 2 mil.

She gets a millie. Well if they had to split the millie between her and her sister. This is the beach house that her mother owned. And then they, they sold it and split the profits from that.

Oh, and that became the 1 mil basically part of it or on top of that?

On top. Well, she had the two mil and then they sold this nine hundred thousand dollar house and they split that.

[Ethan]

So that house is worth way more than $900,000 here in Canada.

Well, yeah, it's 900 Australian, so I don't know what the exchange rate is. And this is again in 2019, so I'm sure it's like exploded since then. Yeah.

But there was other stuff that she got. And the money that they got from it allowed Aaron and Simon, who were still, who were separated but still family, to provide interest free loans to Simon's siblings and their spouses to buy homes. So Aaron is doing a lot for these people. She's providing loans for them with her money. And there that never really comes up at all. So that doesn't seem like it was any sort of issue. And then she also bought her home outright, the home where all this went down and two, three other properties with the money from her inheritance. So she was like, has like a multi million dollar real estate portfolio. So it doesn't feel like she did any of this for money. But she's also not happy with the money she has.

He doesn't tell her this, and then afterwards, he says it was an accident. But because of this change, which he, I guess, couldn't reverse, Aaron was no longer entitled to child support payments. So she had been claiming child support since the separation, and he had been paying it. And now that he filed as single and not separated or whatever the Australian law is, she got cut off from government benefits, and the government told Simon to stop paying top. Stop paying the children's school fees and medical bills until they could figure out how much he should actually be paying in child support. Because they were kind of doing it in a. An informal way. So she was pissed. She was pissed about this. And oddly enough, this is. This is apparently the first domino. A word on a tax form that leads to poisoned beef Wellington that kills three people.

Until we know what you're. You actually are due. So I don't really know what she was.

Oh, yeah. Spoon him. Okay, so in 2022, around the same time that all this tax stuff is happening and all these erratic messages from Aaron to the family, Simon gets sick. Really, really sick. Multiple times between the end of November or the end of 2021 and September of 2022, Simon is hospitalized three separate times with gastrointestinal symptoms. The second time this happens. Thank you. The second time this happens, it is so severe, he goes into a coma and has to have part of his bowel surgically removed.

[Ethan]

Oh, my God.

[Kate]

A medical expert.

[Ethan]

These sound like such crazy sicknesses that, like, I'm Sure. If he knew, he'd be like, well, she just dosed me properly the first time.

[David]

Yeah.

[Ethan]

It's like you've ever been sick where you're like, I wish I was dead.

[Harley]

Yes.

[Kate]

Yes.

[Ethan]

I could just imagine. You have to have a part removed. That's crazy.

[Kate]

Oh, and then, like, you probably have to have, like, an ostomy bag for a while. Like having your bowels removed. And with. Is so gross. All right. So a medical experts report commissioned for the trial. So we find this out later. They find that Simon's symptoms were consistent with the ingestion. Ingestion of barium carbonate, which is an ingredient in rat poison. So three times he gets sick with the same symptoms someone would have if they were dosed with rat poison. During the investigation, the investigation into the other deaths, police uncovered evidence from a computer that Aaron was looking into an article about rat poison. So she's researching rat poison. He ends up getting sick with similar symptoms three separate times. And so Simon actually testified that after his hospital admissions, he wondered if Aaron had been poisoning him. He spoke with his doctor about it too, and they were both kind of making a plan. Just as all this other stuff was happening. Simon also raised concerns about cookies given to him by his daughter that were prepared by Aaron. Thank God that the daughter didn't need any.

How did that happen? How did she not poison her daughter?

[Kate]

Well, that, and that. That happens again with the beef Wellington. I don't understand how. Why she would have let her kids anywhere near it, but we'll see that she gives them leftovers from the meal. But with the cookies, Aaron kept calling him to see if he'd eaten them yet. And so he decided not to because he thought that she might have. Might have poisoned them. And because of all of this, his doctor advises him to change his power of attorney. And so Simon removes Aaron and makes his own father his power of attorney. It's very much like the Corey Richard stuff where he was, like, doing it secretly because he thought that she was gonna kill him. So that. Yeah, that's 20, 22. Is Simon having a really, really rough year?

Just getting sick and obviously now probably starting to assume the worst already. He was probably. Yes, he probably, like, I mean, probably put single because he just didn't want to be tied to this person anyway. And. Exactly.

And there are a lot of back and forths about that, which we got to see in the trial as well.

And she wrote down lunch and errands with Heather and Ian. So we know that's where everybody was that day. Simon was invited, her husband, her estranged husband was invited. But he, at the last minute the night before, decided not to go. He now says it's because he thought she was going to poison him. I guess he didn't think she would do that to his family as well. I'm sure she. He would have warned them and told them not to go as well.

So what was this person's relationship that didn't go?

So Simon didn't go. He was invited in the night before.

Yeah, right. So two weeks before this happened, or maybe it's a little earlier, that was when he changed Simon changed his power of attorney and made it his dad, so he had to tell his dad about it. So they had a very, like,

So Aaron, two weeks before, in church, she's chatting with her in laws. She invites them to dinner. At this point, she has been playing up a fake cancer diagnosis to Gail, her mother in law, kind of implying that she's been getting surgeries and procedures, needle biopsies, things like that, because of a bump she has on her elbow. So she's trying to get sympathy from Gail. And so when she invites everyone to dinner at her home, it's kind of implied that she's going to share some news because she specifically says, I'm making sure the kids aren't coming so we can just talk as adults.

Big cancer dinner. Everyone's gonna be there.

And it's cancer, so it's serious.

Right? Exactly. Right. And so, yeah, they, they all went because of course they felt terrible and they wanted to support her. The, the Wilkinson's, her in aunt and uncle in law had never even been to the house before. So they were like, why are we invited? This makes no sense.

I know. I don't even know what did they do? What did they do to deserve any of this? It's horrible.

So for some reason, instead of doing the traditional full one beef Wellington like you see here, she does a bunch of little individual ones and beef Wellington, if you don't know, weird is you can see here it's a piece of beef and then all around, this is what Harley.

They're just like, oh, it's probably just like a stomach bug or something. They don't think anything of it. But the next day they are all scared at how sick they are and they go to the hospital. So the in laws, the aunt and uncle all go. Aaron Patterson also goes to the hospital claiming she has stomach pains and diarrhea, but she doesn't have the same symptoms as anybody else.

She's also lying, fully lying. Although I got to give it to her for her being there, to being like, ouch. Yeah, guys, right?

[Kate]

Yeah, she went. It was very weird. She went that first day for like a couple minutes, and then she refused to be admitted. And then she came back two days later and put herself, like, admitted herself and got on a drip and they transferred her and everything. And so she was kind of playing it up at that point, but here she is. I believe this is the first time. God damn it. This is the first time when she refused to be admitted. We'll just see. They called the cops because the doctors were so worried that she wasn't admitting herself or letting herself be admitted. They're trying to stop her. They're trying to stop her from leaving. They're like, please. Oh, yes.

[Ethan]

So wait, so she came here, said she wasn't feeling well, but then she wouldn't stick around. Why? Because they probably wanted to run some tests or see what she consumed and then they'll see that she didn't eat the same as everyone else.

[Kate]

Yes, exactly.

So she wanted to be there, be on a drip, look sick, and then be like, no, no, no, you're not running.

[Kate]

Yeah, so they, yeah, they tried to get her to stay this first time, but then the cops came. She's like, oh, I got shit to do. I got to pick up my kids, I gotta get my dog. It's like a whole thing. And this nurse is like, I don't get paid enough for these sheets. These sheets. Crocky.

I know. I love it. I love it. So, yeah, she's just trying to talk her out of leaving essentially.

Were you like, this feels like you were planning to stay and then you're like, actually, no, I think at this point is also when she had a run in with the doctor who kind of already knew she'd poisoned people because he was.

The husband's doctor had called him and said it is possible these people have been intentionally poisoned. That was like all in the same day. That first day that everyone went to the hospital, the doctor raised a red flag to his friend. And luckily he did because she didn't say. She didn't say anything about the mushrooms. She didn't say anything about what possibly could be wrong with these people. And so if. If the other doctor hadn't alerted his. His friend at the hospital, it would have been days before they figured it out and actually tried to treat it. And unfortunately, it was already too long by the time they found out. So I think this is her saying she's pro. She's refusing care, but, yeah, she was definitely planning to stay. She's got a whole little backpack.

Yeah, yeah. And then they must have just. They must have literally been like, hey, we'll just see what if you guys all experiencing the same. We'll run some tests. And yeah, we're also like, she's just like. She's like a crazy person. She could just be like going in and out of. I have no idea. Her brain just.

It's really hard. It's really hard to know. She clearly felt guilty and we'll see that. But. Oh, another piece.

[Ethan]

When she killed people that didn't even know her.

[Kate]

Like, didn't even know her. Had nothing to do with the situation.

[Ethan]

Like, and this didn't solve anything.

Not a single thing. Not a single thing. But I think she freaked out because when she met this doctor, he's like, oh, what's your name? Because she's like, I'm just having a bit of. Bit of tummy trouble. Just want to come in, right? And he's like, oh, that's. That's weird. We have four people here having the same thing. Like, what's your name? And she said, aaron. And he said, oh, we've been waiting for you. And so she freaked out because he knew who she was. He knew that she was connected to the other cases. And so that I think they were gonna put some stuff together really quickly. So she's like, no, thank you. I will just. I will just go home. So. So, yeah, that happens. Everybody's in the hospital except for Aaron, and they are deathly, literally deathly ill. This is the doctor. Alarm bells are going off for him. Like I said, the more. The very morning after the lunch is when Simon, bald, bald husband called his. His friend Dr. Ford, who called this guy. This is the guy that confronted Aaron at the hospital and was like, oh yeah. Bitch, get in here. We were worried, we were worried you were gonna come in and I mean, I'm assuming you have the same thing as they do. So he spooked her, but he was also able to start treating the people. But still they didn't know it was the mushrooms. They kind of thought it was death cap mushrooms, but they weren't entirely sure

just from the symptoms because of like how, what was going on?

[Kate]

Yeah, yeah, okay. And I guess in this, in this state of Australia, in Victoria, there had been a pretty recent warning released by the, by the government about death cap mushrooms. I guess they were multiplying in the area and people were getting sick. So they, I think they kind of knew what was going on. But the weirdest, saddest thing during this is Don Patterson. So this is bald husband's father. He knew something was up. He knew that he had probably been poisoned by Aaron. And when this doctor came or when the other doctor came to check on bald husband and his family, well, just check on the family because the bald husband wasn't in there when he came to check on him. John was. Ardan was holding on to a jar of his own vomit as evidence.

And he was like, knew. He knew something was up. So he was like, check this out.

Yes, yes. So he was like in the.

Because once you're sick and you think back on, you're like, everything was weird. She had a different colored plate, like, you know what I mean?

And you have nothing to do but sit there and think about it as you're literally dying. Right. And so the doctor said, as best as I can remember, he held the jar of vomit up and said, I've got this sample. What do you think I should do with it? Oh, is this doctor. It was this doctor, not the other one. I then replied saying, hold on to it because it could be useful later. There was implied meaning in there, but nothing more explicitly. And so by the end of that day, they knew that it was the death cap mushroom. But it was, I mean, it was just going to be too late for most of them, unfortunately. And again, she could have said something at any point and more of these people would be alive. So about the death cap mushroom. It is the deadliest mushroom in the world. It is responsible for 90% of mushroom related fatalities every year. Every year. This is the mushroom that kills the most people. And it is, I know, it's really cute and it looks like others, it looks like other mushrooms to be very, very careful. I like the idea of foraging, but I am not detail oriented enough to not die from eating weird mushrooms.

No, three months after she allegedly poisoned them? Well, I guess now, yeah, she did poison them. She's arrested and charged with three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder of her in laws and their relatives. And this includes the attempted murder. Charges include four counts of attempted murder on Simon from all the times that he got sick.

Well, they tried. They tried. Oh, okay. Those charges, for some reason got dismissed right before trial, and it's not clear why. Maybe they just wanted to focus on the big. The big case. I'm not sure. But those allegations were also not admissible in the main trial, so no one was allowed to bring up the fact that she had potentially tried to poison her husband like a dozen times. Well, not a dozen, but a bunch of times. She, of course, Pleaded not guilty. Her legal team says she panicked after unintentionally serving poison to her family members in a terrible accident, which I guess could be true, but literally, where did you find death cat mushrooms? And why would you put that in your beef Wellington?

Doesn't seem like she had any, like, in person friends, but apparently she had made friends with a bunch of women in a group on Facebook called Keep Kelly Lane Behind Bars. Now, Kelly Lane was a former water polo player who was found guilty of killing her own Baby in 1996. And so Aaron and these other people were, like, obsessed with Kelly Lane, talking about the trial, which had happened, like, years before, and they bonded over this, talked about other true crime stuff. And according to the friends, she was a really good researcher and a bit of a super sleuth in the group. And this. This friend added that Patterson was very unhappy with Simon, described him as controlling and coercive, and shared her challenges in the relationship with the. Her friends online, including how it was difficult dealing with his parents, religion, Because I guess she was an atheist. She told her friends, but, like, they all went to church together, so I don't really know what that's about. So she, she is just very attention seeking stuff, is what it seemed like. The mushrooms. This photo on the right is a real picture from the, the warrant that they served. When they searched her house, they found death cap mushrooms on a scale. She was weighing out the mushrooms. Now prosecutors say she was weighing them out to make sure she got a deadly dose from the dehydrated mushrooms. On. Of course, she, she denied that. Of course. But another thing she shared with this group of, of gals online was that she had been like, obsessed with mixing dried mushrooms into everything, like powdered mushrooms. So I, I, maybe she started out being, like, obsessed with health benefits, actually.

So she was actively looking at death cap mushrooms. And this was reminder. 2022 was the year that Simon kept getting sick. So maybe it wasn't rat poison. Maybe it was mushrooms all along. It's unclear, but the doctor seemed to think it was rat poison. But we don't know because that. That wasn't ever investigated. That still has not been investigated. Okay, another thing that happens. In the vision you can see the nine year old girl sat on a large archive sort of style room as she was being questioned by a police officer. She was wearing pink trainers and the seat was so big her feet didn't even touch the ground. She was crying at times.

And wiping her nose with a tissue. As soon as Erin Patterson heard her daughter's voice.

go to the movies. She told the officer that her and her brother both had leftovers, but she couldn't remember exactly what she ate, only that there was some sort of meat, possibly a steak.

Now that's the part that is weird to me is that she let these kids eat some of what she fed the rest of her family. How even if it was like a separate cut of meat?

I would not give my children or anyone I didn't want dead like anything from my kitchen the very that like that night because there were probably spores everywhere. Why would you do that? Why would you let your kids eat it? At one point, one of the kids said that they like that she like scraped the mushrooms off because they don't like mushrooms. And then they just ate the meat. Why was she feeding it to her children? That is like another, another level really.

But I guess we're not really ever going to understand these people. And then her son, who was 13, a bit older, gave his interview. He said his parents relationship was very negative, which is sad and saying that they had arguments and I mean it sounds like Aaron had been in his ear because he said, I know dad does a lot of things to try to hurt mom. Mom. Such as messing around with the school because like paying the school fees. Aaron's son, the son also recalled a walk during COVID Covid times when his mother stopped to take photos of mushrooms because they looked nice. He said his mother told him the meat they ate for dinner was reheated leftovers from the lunch. Why would you serve that to your children? And then also in the interview he said that he went upstairs around 5:30 on the day of the lunch and Aaron was just like playing legos upstairs. I guess she had like a Lego set that she played but she just had no concerns what for whatsoever that she had just poisoned her whole family.

Choking back tears, he recounted visiting his hospital the day after they were allegedly poisoned by Erin Patterson. Dad was substantially worse than mum. He was really struggling. The prosecution claims Ms. Patterson pretended she'd been diagnosed with cancer to lure her relatives to her home in July 2023. There it's alleged she served up a beef Wellington dish deliberately secretly laced with death cap mushrooms. Simon's parents, Don and Gail Patterson and his aunt and uncle Heather and Ian Wilkinson fell violently ill within hours. The jury as he drove the Wilkinsons to hospital, Heather questioned why the guests meals had been served on different plates to errands.

And then Ian, the sole survivor, does his testimony. So May 6, this is like, what, like a week or so after the trial started? Ian Wilkinson takes the stand. He has spent almost two months. He spent almost two months recovering in the hospital and lost his wife Heather, and his in laws, Gail and Don. So at this point, he's 71 years old. And he told the courtroom that he was very happy to be invited to the lunch set up by Aaron and that Patterson, that Aaron is the one who plated all the food. Aaron's first statements to the cops were that everyone was able to just take whatever they wanted. And then she took her own plate. We all know is fucking bullshit. And she appeared reluctant for her house guests to go into her pantry. I imagine that's where the dehydrator and the scale was. He confirmed again that they all ate from the four gray plates and Patterson ate from an orangey tan plate. He said that his wife told him the next day that she also noticed the difference in colors of plates. So they were talking about the crockery, like, all night.

She was asking our advice. Should I tell the kids or not tell the kids about this threat to my life. So she was really milking it after already poisoning them. She made them also sit through this like they hadn't suffered enough. Wilkinson said the doctors first treated him for food poisoning. All of them for food poisoning. And they thought maybe it was the beef that got them all sick. But at the. That first day, they did not really hear any mention of the mushrooms. And then the next morning, it became clear that they were really, really sick. And it was not just food poisoning.

What foolishness possesses a person to think that murder could be the solution to their problems? Especially the murder of people who have only good intentions towards her, which, I mean. Yeah. How can you make sense of her killing your wife and trying to kill you when you, like, just tangentially knew her? They were your nephew. It's your nephew's wife. Why would she kill. Why would she try to kill you?

Unfathomable, as she would say. Okay. And then Aaron takes the stand. She is the sole witness for the defense. So they weren't even trying to. Things were so locked up, there was, like, no point in trying to discredit anything that the prosecution was saying. So Aaron takes the stand in her own defense. And so here are some of the highlights from that. First of all, legit court reporter nailed it. And there are more photos. I'll show you of her different photo, her different sketchings throughout the trial. So first of all, she admits on the stand that the cancer scare was faked. What she. And this is. I don't know if this is true. The prosecution thinks she just made it up and she thought she'd never have to deal with, like, the consequences because they were all going to be dead. But what she said on the stand is that actually in September, she was going to get gastric bypass surgery, and she was embarrassed about that.
