David
Two,
Harley
Some idiot kills all of her friends with mushrooms. Why did she do it? Find out Today on Trailer 2's After Dark.
Kate
That's right. We have five people going to dinner at their relative's house. Days later, three of them are dead. What the f. Happened? That's what we're talking about today. The Australian mushroom murders. Hello, Harley.
Ethan
This is all brand new to me. I don't know. I don't know a single thing about this.
Kate
Okay. This is one I followed closely at the time and. But I still learned a lot. And we also have Ethan here. Hello, Ethan.
Harley
Hello. Nice to see you. Got a little. Little close. But that's okay.
Ethan
Is that the family Family Guild master.
Harley
It's me. Slow poke first. Okay, we're not doing this, Harley.
Kate
We're not doing. No, we have. We have so much to get to.
Harley
Yeah, take the wheels.
Kate
Yeah, I got it. I got the wheel. We're sponsored by Belessa. They came back.
Harley
My gosh.
Kate
Ba. So we'll hear more from them in a little bit. I know they. Well, I think we're the perfect sponsors for this.
Harley
Ah, you might say that. Enough degeneracy to go around, right?
Kate
Exactly.
Harley
There's nothing we can. There's nothing we have ever seen that we ain't shoved in one of our holes. Can I.
Kate
Can I get an amen?
Harley
Can I get an amen, brother?
Ethan
Amen. Amen.
Harley
What were you saying before? Amen.
Ethan
I'll save it for the ad read, I guess.
Harley
Great.
Kate
Okay. Perfect. Great. We love that.
Ethan
So. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. Yeah. I'm not trying to, like, take up more space, but doesn't it. You see our shoulders? It looks like you're on. On a booster seat. You see?
Kate
Oh, yeah. He's too long.
Ethan
Did you tell. I think the size is right, but I am.
Reporter
I'm.
Kate
I'm.
Ethan
I'm low, right?
Kate
I don't. I think it's normal, actually. I think these are our normal heights.
Harley
You can't go higher. Your float.
Kate
Have. Have. There we go. There we go. This is showbiz, guys.
Ethan
That I got.
Kate
I bought a bit more show. There we go.
Ethan
This is really crazy. I shouldn't do this. Put her down. I'm kidding. I'm kidding. Let's just go.
Kate
Let's go.
David
See, unlike other shows. Unlike other shows, we wait till we're live to around with the cameras.
Kate
Yes, of course, you guys.
Ethan
Because you guys are doing something over there. David, you're clicking. You're clicking stuff around. I'll come in Every day.
Harley
Guys, you want to start over? You guys want to restart the stream?
Ethan
Let's bring it back. Let's bring it back.
Harley
Re launch, please. David. Talk about the mushrooms.
Kate
Talk about everyone.
Harley
Yo. Talk about the mushrooms in any swamp. There's not even mushrooms there. Go ahead.
Kate
There should be. And I've always said that. Okay, so we have a couple, like, top of show true crime things. Do y' all know about Nancy Guthrie? I love Guthy.
Harley
Yes, ma'. Am. I know all about n. Nancy Guthrie. Oh, yeah, that's right. She's. She done put some kind of that poison there in that. In the nice southern sweet tea.
Kate
No, Nancy Guthrie is the woman who went missing. Her.
Ethan
You're mixing up your After Dark episodes.
Kate
Yeah. And I just wanted to share before we get into the full story.
Harley
She's the one that. All right. And I was like, why does everyone care about this lady? No offense to her, of course. And I mean, she's 84. So, I mean, if anybody's gonna get kidnapped and just. And like, disappear forever, I mean, at least it's good that. I mean, not good, but it's good. 84.
Ethan
I like that logic,
Harley
you know, 84. That's a good. That's a good. It's good candidate. That's a good candidate.
Kate
Well, okay. They have released. They have released her the two ransom notes that were allegedly sent to Savannah. And so, yeah, I just wanted to share those because we've heard a lot about them, but we haven't actually gotten to see. See them.
Ethan
So this was the woman. She's. She's on a TV show and her mom was kidnapped. The guy taped on the ring doorbell and this is.
Harley
She.
David
She.
Ethan
She still has not returned.
Kate
Oh, yeah, she's. I. Pretty clearly she's dead.
Harley
She's tall.
Ethan
They sent. They sent a finger at some point or something.
Harley
Finger?
Kate
I don't think they sent a finger, but it says. Basically. All right, it says, we have your mother. She is safe but scared.
Reporter
She.
Kate
She will be held for ransom, and once payment is received, she will be released unharmed. We will be holding her for a maximum of seven days. You need to send Bitcoin. If the payment is not received, the ransom will be increased to 6 million USD. Once payment is received, they should reduce it.
Harley
Why increase it? They. They. They don't know.
Ethan
I was thinking the same.
Harley
They don't know how this works.
Kate
You know, they got a haggle with them.
Harley
Yeah. That you could like. You know, obviously. Obviously she didn't want her back for sick.4 million or whatever. They Were asking.
Kate
Yeah. You got to lower it. If payment is not received by the last deadline, she will be killed. Your mother is aware of this and her life is in your hands. Do not play games. Law enforcement will not be able to help you.
Ethan
Well, that part was true, right?
Harley
Talk to Dan about where to put it.
Kate
What's going on?
Ethan
Was that part true that law enforcement wasn't able to help her?
Kate
Well, yeah.
Ethan
Weren't people doing some investigation on the side?
Kate
Yeah, a lot of people were.
Ethan
There was like a big movement of people trying to do probably messing things up a little bit also.
Kate
A thousand percent. Yeah, a thousand percent. And then this is the second one that was sent at least a week or more later. It says, we did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. She needed all kinds of medication. We never intended to hurt her. That was not our intention. She perished shortly after she was taken.
Harley
Like a can of mayonnaise.
Kate
This is so awful.
Harley
Perished?
Kate
Yeah, like perishables. We believe it was heart related. She is buried in nature now. Nothing you could have done could have changed the outcome. We want your family to know this and hope you all can find peace. We are truly sorry.
Ethan
Oh, this is. They sent this recently. Ish. Something like. This is like the. The latest from.
Kate
Yeah, this latest.
Ethan
The kidnappers.
Kate
It was probably like a couple weeks ago.
Ethan
Weren't we thinking that that or wasn't their theory that someone close to the family was involved or something of the
Kate
sort that's usually the culprit.
Ethan
And they also went and they taped the ring doorbell right away and stuff. And then it's like they instantly kill them. Probably got recognized maybe. Or. Or actually she is just super old.
Kate
Well, she was on. Yeah. She had a bunch of heart medication that she needed and they didn't take with her.
Ethan
And I love how they're like, she's. She's dead. It was gon. She died pretty much right after.
Harley
They were right. She was 84.
Kate
There's nothing you could have done.
Ethan
They're like, she's buried.
David
Just.
Ethan
It's. It's dead. It's done. Everyone takes an L. Let's move on.
Kate
She thinks like. Yeah, they think they. They don't want her body back or anything. Like, it's okay, guys. She's in nature.
Harley
What does that even mean? Everywhere's in nature. Everywhere.
Kate
Right.
Harley
What is the nature? Where's nature? Exactly. What does that mean?
Kate
I don't know.
Harley
And I dumped her in the lake.
Kate
Yeah. It could be literally anything. We are truly sorry that.
Ethan
Is that it. It would Be very infuriating that someone's like, oh, we took her. We accidentally killed her. Also, we buried her.
Harley
I'd be like, just beautiful burial in nature.
Ethan
Let me. Yeah, let me pick up the body somewhere. Don't. Let me come get it. Let me come collect my mom.
Kate
Yeah, please.
Harley
We buried her.
Kate
Viking funeral.
Harley
She had a wonderful, beautiful burial. Nature off the 101. We dug up shallow ditch under some weeds and. And dry dirt.
Ethan
Technically, that counts. Like, that counts as a burial in space too, if you think about it. Because everything is space.
Kate
Oh, sure.
Ethan
Space.
Kate
We're all buried in space.
Ethan
Space. Right now.
Kate
We are anyway.
David
Yep.
Kate
What? No. What are you gonna say?
Harley
We're. No, no, we're not in space right now.
Kate
Yes, we are.
Harley
I know what you're saying, Harley, but we're not like the earth, like it
Ethan
was pissing you off.
Harley
The earth is like a giant spaceship, you know, like that type of thing. But we're clearly in an atmosphere.
Kate
Okay, atmosphere. But we are in space.
Harley
Well, the earth is in space.
Kate
And where are we?
Harley
In the Earth's atmosphere?
Kate
Okay.
Ethan
Everything is space. Everything is nature.
Kate
Harley still has Shambhala.
Ethan
Everything is Fortnite.
Kate
Everything is connected. We're all connected. Much like mushrooms. The mycelium underground. So let's. Let's. Nice segue, Kate.
Ethan
Banger segue. Literally, banger segue.
Harley
Can I ask you a question, Kate? Thank you. This Guthrie lady that was kidnapped, why are they asking for so much money? Is her family rich or something? Like, who has her?
David
Her.
Kate
Her daughter? Savannah Guthrie is a. A news anchor.
Harley
I know that, but like, news anchors make millions of dollars. Yeah, they do.
Ethan
Well, eventually, right?
Kate
The big ones. Yeah. Like network. Yeah. Was she Good Morning America? Let me see.
Ethan
I feel like that. I feel like. Yeah, you get. You get. You get to, like. I mean, I feel like that might be all the money, though. That might be all her money. Yeah, like, I can't ask for all the money.
Kate
Savannah Guthrie, net worth? Let's find out.
Harley
I don't think she got like $6 million to give for her 84 year old mom, by the way, where it's like, tough luck. Maybe if you kidnapped my daughter, we could talk. I mean, seriously, because what do you pay? What are you buying exactly? Like, six months of life left, bro.
Ethan
You're here. He's not even wrong. No, my mom. If my mom got kidnapped at 83 and I spent 6 million to get her back, she would be so furious. Like she would. My mom so pissed that I wasted the 6 million for. For my If I had kids or anyone, no matter what, you'd be so mad.
Harley
Yeah. Horrible, Horrible return on value.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
Like a Christmas present. She, like, gets angry when we buy her things.
Ethan
So I. I love my mom. She's amazing. Crazy mental illness. Crazy levels of mental illness. So.
Kate
Got kicked out of Facebook groups. We love her.
Ethan
Yo, band. She's off the book. She's off the book entirely. Fully banned.
Harley
Yeah.
Ethan
Fully gone. Yeah, she's fully gone.
Harley
What did she. What happened? How does that happen?
Ethan
I tried. I tried mining. I tried. I tried mining and asking, like, what exactly it was, and she, like, was going off on Mark Zuckerberg and they're censoring her and stuff.
Harley
She got banned.
Ethan
She. Yeah, she got banned from multiple groups. And. Yeah, here's like, she sent me this. Here count. She sent me this picture. She's like, what's it mean?
Harley
Oh, my God. What. How much of a degenerate Facebook degenerate do you have to be to get permanent banned off that platform?
Kate
What is she doing?
Ethan
What groups were she in because of inauthentic behavior or violations of her advertising policy affecting business assets?
Kate
What, is she running fake ads?
Ethan
I don't know, but what's crazy is, like, she just has. She's like, the backup for my accounts.
Harley
Huh. Oh, so you're. Now you can't recover your.
Ethan
But, like, was it really that important?
Harley
Yeah.
Kate
Wait, she. She was doing as Harley Morinstein in these groups?
Ethan
Yeah. If you ever seen Harley Morrison ever say anything. Bad guys. It wasn't me.
Harley
She did. No.
Ethan
You should have seen what you wore for Halloween as my Halloween costume.
Harley
You're lying. Yeah.
Ethan
Yeah, I'm lying.
Harley
Why would you let your mom log into your Facebook? That seems like the worst decision a person could ever make.
Kate
Well, that does. That would make sense for, like, the. In. What is it? Inauthentic behavior or whatever it said.
Harley
Hey, you're acting very inauthentic right now. Just be yourself.
Kate
Access restricted for that.
Harley
What's your mom's name?
Ethan
Yeah, Heather.
Harley
Heather. You need it, Heather. Just be yourself, Heather.
Kate
So 80s. Heather.
Ethan
Heather.
Kate
Hey, Heather. All right, let's talk about somebody else.
Harley
Ready? Yeah.
Kate
Let's get into these mushrooms. We've got a lot. A lot to cover. David, we are ready for the presentation. Okay, so this all happened in 2023, and the trial was in 2025. And the reason this is pertinent now is there are appeals happening in literally two weeks. So it's good to catch up on the information because we are not done with Ms. Aaron Patterson. So this all happened in Leon, Gotha Lee and Gotha, Victoria, Australia, which is at the, like, teeny tiny tip of Australia here. Oh, I should probably go. Do you need me? Full screen? Am I good, David? Looks good. Okay, great. So they're here. This is like the very little tip of Australia is where this happened. Leongatha. Yep. Very small, small town.
Harley
Can I make an observation, people?
Kate
Yeah.
Harley
If you live in a town of 5,000 people and you kill five of them, that's like a whole. That's like a significant portion of the population. I mean, that's like almost like a whole percent, you know, if you do the math wrong.
Kate
If you do it really wrong. Yeah, if you do it really wrong, it's like half the. Half the population.
Ethan
Maybe. Maybe everyone knows someone.
Harley
But it's like 0.1. It is like 0.1%, you know, which is. I mean, if I wanted to kill point one of the people in LA, they'd have to be quite a lot, like 0.1% of population in LA. I mean, I have to kill tens of thousands, probably.
Ethan
Are you not.
Harley
No, sorry, no. 4,000 people.
Ethan
I know how to.
Kate
So almost as many as in this town.
Harley
Yeah. Yeah.
Kate
That's crazy.
Ethan
You know, I'm just saying, what stops people from just starting fires everywhere?
Kate
Getting arrested, hurting people.
Harley
Do you want having a conscience? Well, what's the.
Ethan
I'm saying, if you're a bad person,
Harley
what's the benefit of lighting fires everywhere?
Ethan
You're just a bad. You're a bad person.
Kate
I think there aren't that many bad people then, right?
Harley
No, but bad for what? Cause because there's.
Ethan
That you're a spy from a different country.
Harley
That's it. If you're doing Chinese terrorism, then yeah. Or that's the only Taliban. Taliban. I don't know. I've always thought that. I've always wondered why they don't just light the hills of California up every summer or fall.
Kate
You know, somebody does.
Harley
Exactly. They're like, it's being done already.
Kate
Yeah. They don't have to do anything. Just sit back and let an American flick a cigarette butt.
Ethan
And then I went. I went to this music festival and at nighttime, you know what they do? They fly around thermal drones to see if fires are being started. Cigarette butts.
Kate
Oh, smart.
Ethan
To see if someone's, like, lying down or passed out somewhere weird or if there's, like, that's happening in a place that there isn't supposed to be action happening.
Harley
They've gotten very good at investigating and preventing and fighting these These fires, so it's pretty cool. Watch out, Taliban, we're on to you.
Kate
Hey, watch out.
Harley
And China, especially China.
Kate
Well, kids, and with your fireworks, we're
Harley
coming for you Chinese children.
Ethan
Chinese children.
Harley
We're coming for you Chinese girlfriends.
Kate
Okay, here are the people the.
Harley
Is that sound? Is that you, David?
David
Yes, that's me speaking Chinese.
Harley
Why are you doing. Why are you doing a. Why are you doing a racist Chinese, like, imitation, bro?
Ethan
We got our own sound bits over here, dude. We got some good ones.
David
I have another Chinese one. You want to hear the other Chinese one?
Harley
We got.
Ethan
We got a whole folder filled with Whole folder of sound effects that Zach passed on.
Harley
All right, turn our mics off.
Kate
David needs to do them.
Harley
Turn. And Harley's mic off. Yeah, go ahead, Kate.
Kate
So these are the people involved in this case. We have Aaron. Oh, why did it say Trudy? That's her middle name. Aaron and Simon Patterson. This is them. They are separated at the point that all this happened. We will get a little bit more into their backstory. Simon's parents, Don and Gail Patterson, two of the dining guests. And then two of the other guests were Heather and Ian Wilkinson. Gail and Heather are sisters. So this is Simon's aunt and uncle and his parents. And then this is the. The couple at the center who have been separated for several years when all of this goes down. Any questions about that?
Harley
Yeah, you think you're safe after a couple years breakup? But she's still plotting on the mushroom.
Kate
It's crazy. It's crazy. And I. Like I was saying to you before we started, I am still not entirely sure why the hell she did this. It doesn't make sense to me. And we'll see why.
Harley
Is it possible she genuinely just used the wrong mushrooms?
Kate
If so, her defense team did not argue that very well. And they were. Yeah. So I don't know, but part of me has a little bit of that. But then I remember other pieces of this and I'm like, okay, she definitely did it. So I will present that to you guys and you can decide. So here's the general timeline. 2004, Aaron and Simon meet. She's working at. For the RSPCA Australia. They're both working for the city in a suburb of Melbourne. Melbourne. And they start dating. So they've been together a while.
Ethan
So super, super quick.
Kate
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ethan
Let's lock that down right now. Factually. Melbourne. Melbourne.
Kate
Melbourne.
Ethan
Just because I wanna. I wanna not. I wanna say. I want to say it right in future conversations for the rest of my life.
Kate
I think it's Mel Burn. But Australia if you.
Ethan
Melbourne. I'll Melbourne.
Kate
Yeah, I'll Melbourne.
Ethan
Okay, well, Melbourne all day.
Harley
I'm gonna burn this mother down.
Kate
Melbourne. Say, I kept doing in an Australian accent while I was writing. Also, I've been so up by looking into all this stuff. I had a dream last night that I dropped poisonous mushrooms on the carpet and my dogs were trying to eat it and I was trying to get it out of their mouths. So protecting my brain. Oh, they absolutely got a piece. And I was freaking out. Okay, so 2006, they've been together for a couple years. Aaron inherits $2 million.
Harley
Well, there's your motive.
Kate
Well, but, but not really. It's that. That's what doesn't make sense to me. She's the one who had the money. So she inherits the money from her grandmother who passes away, and it's paid to her over an eight year period starting in 2007. My first thought was, okay, did she also poison her grandma? But that's not clear. And she didn't have any, really any evidence of looking into poisoning people until much later. So I think she just had money in her family because she makes more money too later on. So Simon and Aaron get married in 2007, and they decide to move to Pith Perth, which is very far away from their family. Aaron considers Simon's family her family. She's kind of estranged from her mom, but for some reason, and I was not able to find out why, they moved over 2,000 miles west of Melbourne. And while they were there, Aaron ran a secondhand bookshop because, you know, money was not an object at the time with the inheritance. And then while they were there, she gave birth to their first child, their son. So that's 2007-13. They're living way out here away from everybody.
Ethan
You got. You got money, you could buy the house. You got a couple extra bucks to do whatever with, and then you just get a job doing something you like.
Kate
I know, it's pretty sick. I've always thought about running a bookshop.
Ethan
So there's the baby.
Kate
Look at the baby. Oh, look at him.
Ethan
That's the Guild Master. The Guild Master.
Kate
We got Ethan a bed. Isn't he beautiful? He's so beautiful when he sleeps. Okay, so there's, there's Ethan taking a snooze.
Ethan
All right, so what was I just gonna say? I was saying something.
Kate
Oh, about like just being able to have a bookshop of your own.
Ethan
Oh, yeah, I know this. I know this. Guy, he won the lottery and it was such a crazy amount of money that they said a lot of times people that win the lottery, they blow through the money really fast or.
Kate
Yeah.
Ethan
You know, they get addicted to stuff or who knows? Lots of. It's, it's like a curse almost. Winning the lottery.
Kate
Yes. Yeah. A lot of people commit suicide.
Ethan
And then also, you know, you've seen like shows like Ozark and stuff, sometimes you give the money to family members or who knows what, you know, it gets all crazy.
Kate
Yeah.
Ethan
So they had this thing planned where the way that he would pay out family members and stuff as like a means of paying out people.
Harley
It's.
Ethan
They work. Whatever job, they work. He pays triple the salary.
Kate
Oh, that's nice.
Ethan
Because when people stop working, they start to up. So keeping working is important. I always thought about how chill it would be to just work at GameStop as a manager for like three. Three times the amount of money.
Kate
Hell yeah.
Ethan
Like a book.
Harley
That's sick, Harley. You make 50,000 a year.
Ethan
That's double what I was. Double what I was making as a teacher.
Kate
Yeah. Period. That don't pay, unfortunately. Yeah, I mean that's. To me that's the dream is, you know, to be able to just do whatever you want. And so that's what they were doing out there. But then when she got pregnant, they decided to move back to. When did they do that? Okay. They decide to move back to Melbourne. But first, very, very soon after they get married, cracks start to show. Only two years into their marriage, they start doing trial separations. They do multiple short term separations between 2007 and 2015. They are on again, off again. Basically right after the birth of their first child, everything kind of just disintegrates. But they keep trying to stay together, keep trying to make it work. And in the midst of all of
Ethan
that, why were they, why were they not going to be together? They were, they fell out of love or something.
Kate
Yeah, they just, they're, they're just, they just couldn't make it work. They didn't really like each other.
Ethan
They were like, let's try it. Let's try a kid. One last shot. Let's. Let's do the kid thing before we.
Harley
Okay.
Kate
And wouldn't you know it, the kid fixed it.
Harley
That's what I was gonna say. Yeah. Usually when you have kids to save the marriage, it works.
Kate
Yeah, and it did. Everything ended up great for these people.
Harley
In this case, one of them ended up dead from drinking poison mushrooms.
Kate
We'll find out who Exactly.
David
Died.
Kate
So yeah, so they decided to move back to Melbourne and they drove instead of flying. They drove the 2,000 plus miles, like through the outback, having like this family adventure with their son. Clearly trying to like stave off divorce, it seems.
Harley
How old's their son?
Reporter
Four.
Kate
Four years old. And she was pregnant with their second child, their daughter. And then they, yeah, they packed up. 2013, they drive back and Aaron said it took them a few months to actually get back and like settle in. They went to New Zealand for a little while and then they stayed with Simon's parents, Don and Gail for like six weeks. So things were good with the in laws. Like it wasn't weird. She said it was cramped in that all three of us, her and Simon and the sun were in one room. But it didn't matter because Don and Gail were so welcoming. It was really a good experience. So 2013, from all outside appearances, things look fine. Like they're co parenting. They might be on and off, but you know, it's working, sort of. And then they land back in Melbourne. Plan B is a backup birth control option that's there for you when things don't go according to plan.
Reporter
It specifically works after unprotected sex and
Kate
before pregnancy occurs by temporarily delaying ovulation. Plan B is available nationwide at all major retailers and through delivery apps like DoorDash, no ID, prescription or age requirement. It's the number one OB GYN recommended brand of emergency contraception and it won't impact your future fertility.
Reporter
That's freedom to be use as directed.
Kate
Fortunately, it doesn't last long. They have their daughter and then they separate for real. They never actually divorce.
Ethan
Her fault.
Kate
They. Wait, what?
Ethan
Her fault? The daughter.
Kate
What's her fault? Oh, the daughter's fault. Yeah, for sure.
Harley
I thought you were just saying it's the mom's fault. Because it always is the woman's fault.
Kate
Yeah, there's that too.
Ethan
Mom or daughter?
Kate
Mom or daughter? I mean, take your pick, right?
Harley
Look at that. He never. That guy never did anything, never did
Kate
a, a single thing wrong.
Harley
Clocks out the man, sweats and bleeds and lives for his family. And what do you get? A bowl of poisonous mushrooms.
Ethan
He's in a man in a suit. Instantly. Trust him.
Kate
Instantly.
Ethan
Respect and trust him.
Kate
Love. They are notoriously known for being trustworthy. For sure. Yeah. So their daughter is born, they fully separate for the first time, like for good. But it still seems like things are amicable between them. They're sharing custody, they're doing holidays together, they go to church together. And church becomes like a part of this or they see each other at church and they're friendly at least. And so yeah, things, things are okay, it seems. And then Aaron makes some more money, more money comes in for her. Her mother passes away in 2019. Who's her last living?
Ethan
She got 2 for 2mil for her grandmother or who. How did she get the 2 mil?
Kate
That was from her grandma was a 2 mil.
Ethan
Let me check on dies and she gets a mill.
Kate
She gets a millie. Well if they had to split the millie between her and her sister. This is the beach house that her mother owned. And then they, they sold it and split the profits from that.
Ethan
Oh, and that became the 1 mil basically part of it or on top of that?
Kate
On top. Well, she had the two mil and then they sold this nine hundred thousand dollar house and they split that.
Ethan
So that house is worth way more than $900,000 here in Canada.
Kate
Well, yeah, it's 900 Australian, so I don't know what the exchange rate is. And this is again in 2019, so I'm sure it's like exploded since then. Yeah.
Ethan
That's an interesting looking house, eh? Yeah, it's not about the house at all. Can we go inside?
Kate
We didn't. The most I could get was this like this creeper shot of this house. Yeah. So she also inherited other things in the estate. Like this is the biggest piece of it. But there was other stuff that she got. And the money that they got from it allowed Aaron and Simon, who were still, who were separated but still family, to provide interest free loans to Simon's siblings and their spouses to buy homes. So Aaron is doing a lot for these people. She's providing loans for them with her money. And there that never really comes up at all. So that doesn't seem like it was any sort of issue. And then she also bought her home outright, the home where all this went down and two, three other properties with the money from her inheritance. So she was like, has like a multi million dollar real estate portfolio. So it doesn't feel like she did any of this for money. But she's also not happy with the money she has.
Ethan
Like she wants more money.
Kate
Yes.
Ethan
That's like Ethan.
Kate
Not like Ethan.
Ethan
Well, you don't want more money?
Harley
I don't know.
Kate
Who doesn't? Who doesn't? Oh God. Okay, so, Okay, I'm gonna do this, this little bit and then we can go to the ad. David. All right, so 2022, so our mom dies in 2019. Three years later, money Gets in the way of this, like, delicate balance she has between her and Simon. In 2022, after years and years of filing as married, Simon puts single on his tax forms. He doesn't tell her this, and then afterwards, he says it was an accident. But because of this change, which he, I guess, couldn't reverse, Aaron was no longer entitled to child support payments. So she had been claiming child support since the separation, and he had been paying it. And now that he filed as single and not separated or whatever the Australian law is, she got cut off from government benefits, and the government told Simon to stop paying top. Stop paying the children's school fees and medical bills until they could figure out how much he should actually be paying in child support. Because they were kind of doing it in a. An informal way. So she was pissed. She was pissed about this. And oddly enough, this is. This is apparently the first domino. A word on a tax form that leads to poisoned beef Wellington that kills three people.
Harley
It was actually beef Wellington.
Kate
It was nice. Yeah.
Harley
That's a smart move, because you can't say no to beef Wellington.
Kate
That's right. It's very classic.
Ethan
Hide a lot of poison in there, too, I think, before anyone tastes it.
Harley
Yep, yep, yep.
Kate
Totally. Should we do the ad now?
Harley
Sure.
Kate
Okay, let me pull up my thing here.
Harley
What are we putting our dick in today, folks?
Ethan
She said she's pulling her thing out.
Kate
Pulling my thing up and pulling my thing out. Okay, so today's episode of truetooth is sponsored by Bellesa.
Harley
Yay.
Kate
Stop what you're doing, everyone, and listen closely, because Harley and I are giving away free spicy toys to every single one of you. And not just any spicy toy. This one is specific. This is about the rose. Y' all know about the rose.
Ethan
It's famous.
Kate
Let me pull.
Harley
What is the rose? I don't know what it is.
Kate
What? All right, hang on. Let me pull it up here so you guys can see what all the girlies are talking about. I don't even know if you can say that on here, but I'm just gonna pull up a picture. This, Ethan, is the rose. It has. Wow, a sucking function.
Ethan
It's famous.
Kate
That the girls. The girls go crazy.
Harley
It's just a manual kind of pumping that you do.
Kate
No, it's. It's electric.
Harley
Oh, it's electric. Okay.
Kate
So there's vibration, there's suction, but it looks like.
Ethan
It looks like makeup.
Kate
Yeah, it's like. Looks cute. So you don't need to really worry about people being like, what the heck is that? So yeah. They are giving away the rose. It went viral for a reason. 10 mind blowing suction modes. Rechargeable, splash proof and silent. This little flower shaped spicy toy is iconic. So if you haven't heard of Bellesa, let me put you on. They are here to empower you to embrace, explore, and celebrate your. Your pleasure. I'm sure that maybe you've seen their famous air vibe, which I have right here. You know that little red dual simulation toy. I'll show you. There's two things going on. This also has a sucker. This bit here. And this goes wherever you'd like. And it's bendable.
Ethan
We don't have many choices though.
Harley
Yeah. I was gonna say when you say wherever you like, open a lot of new horizons. I hadn't thought about.
Kate
That's right. So this part. Suctions.
Harley
So we're sucking. That's. That's the new thing right now with the sex toys.
Ethan
I. It's new for me too. I did. I didn't know that.
Kate
It's big for the girlies. It's definitely big for the girlies. Yeah. And it. As I said last time, taking everything from us. My favorite thing about the Bellesa toys is they charge in a case. So you don't just have like a vibrator out charging. You have it in its little discreet case so you can charge it wherever you like and no one's going to see it. I love it. I've been having a lot of fun with my. My gifts from Palesa for sure. And of course, we are here to hook you guys up. Harley, what's your experience been like?
Ethan
I have the Ultra blow and I've cleaned it twice already. Yeah. Very easy to clean.
Kate
We love that.
Ethan
It is very easy to clean.
Kate
We love that.
Ethan
It also, I. I use it at like 1 1% because it's like, it goes. It's, It's. It's powerful.
Kate
Holy crap. Hey, if Harley's using it at 1%, you know, this is powerful. Stop.
Ethan
And. And I got the thump.
Kate
Oh, the thump. Yes, I have that too.
Ethan
Yeah. Also there's like a suction thing.
David
Eh.
Kate
That has a little suctiony kind of like. Yeah, Yeah.
Ethan
I haven't got that cool stuff. Yeah, it's locked and loaded.
Kate
It's ready. It's ready.
Ethan
Waiting for a victim, but yeah, it's. I didn't know that. Yeah. I guess that the rose does the same thing. It has that like. That's that suction thing.
Kate
The girls love it.
Ethan
I've been doing things all wrong after seeing what that thing does.
Kate
Yeah, maybe. Maybe y' all can learn a little something for saying this after seeing this stuff. So our friends at Bellesa are sending out a free rose suction toy with every single order. So whatever you order, you get a free rose. That retails huge. It retails for $99.
Ethan
That is huge.
Kate
That's a hundred dollar free.
Ethan
That is huge.
Kate

Ethan
The free rose is really big. That's huge.
Kate
Bananas.
Ethan
Like, I'm telling people offline about this. I'm like, yo, use After Dark. I'm going outside to my neighbor. I'm going door to door.
Kate
99 bucks. Can't beat it. Can't beat it. Oh, my God. I don't even know what that's from.
Harley
I know.
Ethan
And you're yelling. You're yelling it. Thank you. Shout out.
Kate
Shout out. I love having a spicy toy sponsor. That makes me so happy.
Harley
Me too.
Kate
All right, are we ready to get back to the mushrooms?
David
Ethan, are you ready?
Kate
He's ready.
Ethan
Look at him's bed.
Kate
Is that his blankie?
Ethan
Was that his name?
Harley
Bartholomew smells weird, but it's fine.
Kate
Like it's been washed since Bartholomew laid on it. Ethan says Bartholomew, though. Well, sweet, sweet dreams, sweet prince. And let's get back to the mushroom murders. Okay, so Aaron is pissed that she has been kicked off the child support in 2022. And she texts or DMS a bunch of her friends about how mad she is. And we got to see some of these as part of the trial. So here are some of the the Facebook posts that were mentioned in trial
Reporter
2 and expressed frustration with Simon Patterson and his parents over an ongoing child support dispute. I'm sick of this. I want nothing to do with them. The account rose.
Kate
I'm sick of these sheets. I love Australia people.
Harley
Wait, wait, wait.
Ethan
Hold on. What's that? What was that person's name?
Kate
Who?
Ethan
That person's name. Aaron. Aaron.
Harley
Aaron.
Kate
Yeah, that's what Her Facebook account. One of her Facebook accounts.
David
That's what she.
Ethan
Okay, okay, okay. I thought it was like a real name. Aaron. Aaron, Aaron, Aaron, Aaron.
Kate
All right, so here we go again. And go.
Reporter
Frustration with Simon Patterson and his parents.
Ethan
So that's the good guy because he's wearing a suit.
Kate
Yep. Good guy in a suit.
Reporter
Dispute. I'm sick of this. I want nothing to do with them. The account wrote in one message. In another, they said, his parents sent me a message yesterday afternoon and Simon sent me one last night. But I've read neither and I don't think I will. Simon's will just be horrible and be gaslighting and abusive and his parents will be more weasel words about not getting involved. His mum was horrified I had claimed child support. Why isn't she horrified? Her son is such a deadbeat that I had no choice.
Ethan
But I, I, I love Australian people and I really want to go to Australia. I feel like it's like my place on many levels, but, man, I don't know how they take their news seriously when they're all talking like that.
Kate
I'm sick of this sheet. I'm sick of this sheet. I love that. I love the accent so much. His mom was horrified.
Ethan
Facebook, it is probably one of the top accents out there. It's great, but it's just like. Yeah, I, I can only hear people doing impressions of it.
Kate
His son is such a deadbeat. The court also. All right, so that's, that's those the messages that she sent. Let me see if I said, is this my mom? Yeah.
Ethan
The Facebook post getting banned on Facebook, kicked off.
Kate
Baby. Oh, I need my notes. Hang on. Brazil interview. There we go. All right, so, yeah, she. Apparently during all of this, there's a pop up on it. What? Oh, God. All right, there we go. So during this time, she is leaving out of these conversations with her friends that she is, like, repeatedly messaging Simon and his parents, trying to get his parents to discipline their son into giving her money. And they just don't want to get involved. And that pisses her off because she considers them her family too. She wants somebody to take her side.
Ethan
But she's also. She's owed child support. Right.
Kate
I can't figure it out because they aren't divorced. I don't know what. I mean, she has this real estate portfolio. I don't know what she's owed. Maybe because he moved out. She is. I don't really know how it works in Australia, but they were kind of doing an informal thing until he changed what he put on his taxes. And then the government was like, you can't pay anything. Until we know what you're. You actually are due. So I don't really know what she was.
Ethan
Oh, so she was getting. She was getting from the government, not from him also. Why does he even care?
Kate
I don't know. I. That. That piece of it, I scoured and could not find. Like, I think I would need to know, like, in depth stuff about, like, the Australian.
Ethan
She probably just sucks. Family court her over. She killed his family. Killed his family.
Kate
I mean.
David
Yeah.
Kate
Retroactively assuming. Yeah.
Harley
Yeah.
Ethan
He didn't know how much. She did.
Kate
Yeah. There was a. There was a moment in the trial where. Or in one of his depositions where he. The. The lawyer was like, was anything amiss. Do you notice anything amiss? And he was like, if. By a miss, do you mean, I thought she was gonna kill my family? No, I did not notice anything. Like, it had not. Definitely not gotten to that level.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
So everyone was pretty stunned. What the. Okay, there we go. Why is this doing that?
Ethan
What's wrong? You don't like what?
Kate
It's not letting me click to the next thing. There we go.
Ethan
So you have a blue. You have a blue cursor.
Kate
Shut up.
Ethan
For the presentation.
Harley
Yeah.
Kate
Thank you so much. Thank you.
Ethan
It's sick.
Kate
Thank you.
Ethan
Everything you're doing is sick. You're killing it.
Kate
Once again, thanks, Harley. Love you. Okay, so that I love.
Ethan
They were like, kate needs more help. Let's send her another man. And now he's there on your side of the screen, asleep. Kate needs more men.
David
Do we think he's fully asleep now?
Kate
Bring in more men doing nothing.
David
He's fully asleep right now. Yeah, he is. He's, like, asleep. Wait, hold on, hold on. Let me try something. Just give me one second.
Kate
No, he's, like, in rem.
Ethan
Oh, I swear, if I was there.
David
All right, I tried.
Ethan
If I was there. If I was there, I'd get into bed.
Kate
A little wet willy.
Ethan
He'd hate it.
Kate
Oh, yeah. Spoon him. Okay, so in 2022, around the same time that all this tax stuff is happening and all these erratic messages from Aaron to the family, Simon gets sick. Really, really sick. Multiple times between the end of November or the end of 2021 and September of 2022, Simon is hospitalized three separate times with gastrointestinal symptoms. The second time this happens. Thank you. The second time this happens, it is so severe, he goes into a coma and has to have part of his bowel surgically removed.
Ethan
Oh, my God.
Kate
A medical expert.
Ethan
These sound like such crazy sicknesses that, like, I'm Sure. If he knew, he'd be like, well, she just dosed me properly the first time.
David
Yeah.
Ethan
It's like you've ever been sick where you're like, I wish I was dead.
Harley
Yes.
Kate
Yes.
Ethan
I could just imagine. You have to have a part removed. That's crazy.
Kate
Oh, and then, like, you probably have to have, like, an ostomy bag for a while. Like having your bowels removed. And with. Is so gross. All right. So a medical experts report commissioned for the trial. So we find this out later. They find that Simon's symptoms were consistent with the ingestion. Ingestion of barium carbonate, which is an ingredient in rat poison. So three times he gets sick with the same symptoms someone would have if they were dosed with rat poison. During the investigation, the investigation into the other deaths, police uncovered evidence from a computer that Aaron was looking into an article about rat poison. So she's researching rat poison. He ends up getting sick with similar symptoms three separate times. And so Simon actually testified that after his hospital admissions, he wondered if Aaron had been poisoning him. He spoke with his doctor about it too, and they were both kind of making a plan. Just as all this other stuff was happening. Simon also raised concerns about cookies given to him by his daughter that were prepared by Aaron. Thank God that the daughter didn't need any.
Harley
Yeah.
Ethan
How did that happen? How did she not poison her daughter?
Kate
Well, that, and that. That happens again with the beef Wellington. I don't understand how. Why she would have let her kids anywhere near it, but we'll see that she gives them leftovers from the meal. But with the cookies, Aaron kept calling him to see if he'd eaten them yet. And so he decided not to because he thought that she might have. Might have poisoned them. And because of all of this, his doctor advises him to change his power of attorney. And so Simon removes Aaron and makes his own father his power of attorney. It's very much like the Corey Richard stuff where he was, like, doing it secretly because he thought that she was gonna kill him. So that. Yeah, that's 20, 22. Is Simon having a really, really rough year?
Ethan
Just getting sick and obviously now probably starting to assume the worst already. He was probably. Yes, he probably, like, I mean, probably put single because he just didn't want to be tied to this person anyway. And. Exactly.
Kate
Oh, Hila said, I just tuned in. What is happening? Well, some people are taking a little snooze. Hi, Hila.
Ethan
Hi.
Kate
Okay, you're getting here. Just at the. At the meaty point of things, pun intended. All right, so we know their relationship is. Is declining. It's strained. Maybe she's poisoning him over and over again. And this is also the point where her relationship with her in laws really takes a downturn. And of all things to blow over or to boil over it. Is this the planning of Gail's 70th birthday party? So Simon's mom's 70th birthday party. Aaron feels snubbed. And there are a lot of back and forths about that, which we got to see in the trial as well.
Ethan
She felt snubbed because she wasn't involved. So sorry. She wasn't involved in the planning of it.
Kate
She wasn't involved. And she thinks that her invitation came late and as an afterthought. And she felt very, very snubbed by that.
Ethan
Oh, yeah, kill them all.
Kate
This is literally only two months before she tries to. Like, she's. I think she is really obviously very up and very possessive of these people that she's decided are her family, because they were. But she's. I think them separating and her losing that is like making her panic, if I had to guess.
Ethan
Yeah.
Reporter
Between the two. Was shown to the jury in which the pair argued about 70th birthday celebrations for Simon's mother, Gail Patterson. When asked if she would be attending, Erin replied, I might pass, thanks, as I'd rather not go somewhere I'm not welcome. What I reckon is that everybody forgot to actually invite me to this thing, and I feel very, very hurt about that. And your response is to say I'm being ridiculous? Simon replied, you're as far off the
Kate
mark as far off the mark you
Reporter
possibly could be on this. I know they would love you to be there. The jury heard the following.
Kate
So the whole time he's, like, trying to placate her, he's like, please don't kill me. Please don't kill our. Our children, our family.
Reporter
Ms. Patterson requested Simon start paying child support after she discovered he'd listed his marriage status as separated on a tax return. Another text.
Kate
So there's. Hang on.
Reporter
Exchange was shown to the jury where Aaron requested a meeting with Simon and his parents to discuss expenses for their children. Mr. Patterson told the court.
Kate
Hello. You know what? Just take those off. You can just take them off. Really? Why are there three hands? Oh, who's in there with him? Okay.
Ethan
AB Must think that's me. And he's still at Shambhala and he's trying to him.
Kate
Yep. Because he just kept trying to you. That's what I heard.
Harley
Shambhala. Oh, my God.
Kate
All right, so, yeah, so she's pissed about the party, and then July 29, 2023 arrives. So on July 29, at her home in Leongatha, Aaron hosts her in laws, Gail and John, and also her husband's aunt and uncle, Heather and Ian. This is from Gail's diary or diary. And she wrote down lunch and errands with Heather and Ian. So we know that's where everybody was that day. Simon was invited, her husband, her estranged husband was invited. But he, at the last minute the night before, decided not to go. He now says it's because he thought she was going to poison him. I guess he didn't think she would do that to his family as well. I'm sure she. He would have warned them and told them not to go as well.
Ethan
So what was this person's relationship that didn't go?
Kate
Simon is her ex husband.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
So Simon didn't go. He was invited in the night before.
Ethan
Our bald man in the suit did not go.
Kate
Bald man in the suit did not go. But he let his mom and dad go and his aunt and uncle.
David
So weird.
Kate
Well, he didn't think. I'm. I'm sure, I'm sure he only like a little bit thought that she might do something. But in general, he said that he felt uncomfortable going, but, you know, thought that they would all have a nice time together.
Ethan
Did he ever tell any of them that? He thinks like, oh, I'm not going. She tried to poison me.
Kate
He mentions it to the extended family much earlier. So like in 2022. And then he does talk to his dad about it, but it's, it's too late at that point. It was like two weeks before this all happened. I mean, I, Even if I got
Ethan
that sick twice, I know I'd be. If my body got sick that sick twice, I'd be like, I'm sorry, I'm never eating your wife's cooking.
Kate
Yeah, right. So two weeks before this happened, or maybe it's a little earlier, that was when he changed Simon changed his power of attorney and made it his dad, so he had to tell his dad about it. So they had a very, like,
David
vague
Kate
conversation about why he was doing it. And so when they get poisoned, John kind of knows what's going on. And we'll, we'll see that.
Ethan
These are the four victims. These are, these are the four victims. These four were killed.
Kate
Three of them die.
Ethan
Okay.
Harley
Okay.
Kate
We do have a living witness, which was very, very helpful. So here's what happened. How do you get. How do you get your in laws with whom you've become estranged, and randomly your uncle and aunt in law to come to dinner and not cancel. You tell them all you have cancer. So Aaron, two weeks before, in church, she's chatting with her in laws. She invites them to dinner. At this point, she has been playing up a fake cancer diagnosis to Gail, her mother in law, kind of implying that she's been getting surgeries and procedures, needle biopsies, things like that, because of a bump she has on her elbow. So she's trying to get sympathy from Gail. And so when she invites everyone to dinner at her home, it's kind of implied that she's going to share some news because she specifically says, I'm making sure the kids aren't coming so we can just talk as adults.
Ethan
Big cancer dinner. Everyone's gonna be there.
Kate
So hype.
Ethan
And it's cancer, so it's serious.
Kate
You can't back out.
Ethan
Yeah, no kids will be there, only cancer. I'm expecting all, all you guys to show some show face and poison.
Kate
But that's none of your business. Essentially. Yeah.
Harley
Yeah.
Ethan
So cancer, cancer, cancer meal. And let's just say I added a little something extra.
Kate
Well, beef Wellington Surprise. For your nerves. Yeah. It was all a lie. She said that she told them after they ate that she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Which is not true.
Ethan
And you can't see it on site though.
Kate
No. So it's a, it's a perfect one to lie.
Ethan
You know what I mean? You can't say like bones and be like making a beef Wellington.
Kate
Right? Exactly. Right. And so, yeah, they, they all went because of course they felt terrible and they wanted to support her. The, the Wilkinson's, her in aunt and uncle in law had never even been to the house before. So they were like, why are we invited? This makes no sense.
Ethan
That's so annoying. Like, I don't even know you, dude.
Kate
I know. I don't even know what did they do? What did they do to deserve any of this? It's horrible.
Ethan
This is a very sick person. We're doing extremely sick, like, very sick person.
Kate
Okay, so two weeks go by after the invitation and lunch is served. So for some reason, instead of doing the traditional full one beef Wellington like you see here, she does a bunch of little individual ones and beef Wellington, if you don't know, weird is you can see here it's a piece of beef and then all around, this is what Harley.
Ethan
I don't know what they use. You could use spinach or you could Use. I don't know. I know. It's filo dough around it there.
Kate
Mushroom.
David
Mushroom.
Kate
Mushrooms around it. Right. All mushrooms.
Ethan
Okay, what do you call. Did you call that filo, though, after that.
Kate
That wraps around it like a filo, right?
David
We call. It's puff pastry is what I would call it.
Kate
Yeah.
Harley
Okay.
Kate
Okay. So she serves us to them with. Yeah, so it's steak covered in mushrooms encased in a pastry. Mashed potatoes, green beans. And she serves it up on four large gray plates. According to the one person who survived, she served herself on a separate small, different colored plate.
Ethan
Oh, my God.
David
Just in case she acts. She couldn't remember which one wasn't the poison one. She had to be, like, so obvious about it.
Kate
Exactly, Exactly. I have to pee super bad.
David
Okay, so can you just do some soupies?
Ethan
Oh, should he do soupies or should I just make stuff up?
Kate
Go ahead and make stuff up. I'll be right back.
Ethan
Okay, so we found out that none of these people were Australian. They're actually the. She was French and they're really Chinese spies. Okay, Dave, we're ready for soupies.
David
All right.
Ethan
Are you hungry? Am I hungry?
David
Yeah.
Harley
Oh, thank you.
Ethan
What the. That's crazy. Isn't that crazy that I asked if you're hungry and then someone brought you food?
David
Yes, I. That's insane.
Ethan
You're welcome. You're welcome that I manifested that. I can't believe I wasted my good manifestation of the day on you getting a snack.
David
I know, but I appreciate it. I'll give you mine tomorrow, okay? Okay. Hey, shout out to everyone who's given Soupy so far. Let me go all the way back to the top here. Shout out straight Kate that said poop dolla.
Ethan
Which I wonder if she was straight Kate after arcade.
David
Yeah, she's straight Kate. We have gay Kate. Niz. Dis one said forward slash inspect Harley's ball bag.
Ethan
Hey,
David
it's empty because the blow come through.
Ethan
It's filled up again since. Trust me, big cummy man.
David
Shout out to sassy skeleton who sent five podcast gift memberships.
Harley
Thank you. Huge.
Ethan
Huge. Holding it down for family. Family Shout out.
David
Family Bell's Victoria said, my brother just interviewed the first ever bladder transplant patient in the middle of Dodger Stadium. Also. Hey. What?
Ethan
That's cool. Sounds like a lie.
David
It does, but sounds like a lie
Ethan
made up on the spot.
David
Yeah, that didn't happen, but it's very cool.
Ethan
Very cool.
David
Trash terrain said hi after dark. Long time watcher. First time chatter. Harley, what do I have to do to get you to the Czech Republic next year for brutal, brutal assault. Imagine Shambhala, but metal and hardcore. Much love, you guys.
Ethan
I'm down. I'm down. I used to go to Heavy Mtl when it was in Montreal. I remember one time I took Molly and I went up to the heavy metal concert and as I was walking up, I heard all the music and I was on Molly. I was like, why did I do this? I was like, this isn't the right. This isn't the right move for. For what this is. And I have to go in the bushes for like 40 minutes, get on top of the buzz. I ate some. Some hot dog buns with no hot dog in it. Just drank some water and then I was in the mosh pit in no time. It was sick.
David
Like a champ.
Kate
Yep.
David
To quit. Who said I have to meet Mama Morenstein? Please send her our love.
Ethan
Yeah, she. We gotta get her on sometime. I just worry. I just worry. She says some crazy
David
boomers do that.
Ethan
Yeah, they do.
Harley
They do.
David
Drop the N word. You're like, whoa.
Harley
Yeah.
Ethan
She would never, ever do that. But she would say some. That, like, you'd be like, don't, don't. What do you. What the.
Kate
I'm back. Thank you. What are you guys doing?
David
Oh, just talking.
Ethan
Just counting all the money we got.
Kate
Hell yeah.
Ethan
All the money we got from the community.
Kate
Shout out to the community.
David
Hey, shout out Ethan. How you doing?
Kate
Shout out Ethan. No, he's like really asleep.
David
He's out.
Kate
He's o u t. We love that for him. Okay, so let's. Let's keep going. Maybe he'll have dreams about being poisoned by mushrooms.
Ethan
The rest is whispers per episode.
Harley
Ethan.
Ethan
Hey, guys. He's sleeping.
David
So.
Ethan
He's sleeping. So today we're gonna talk about.
Kate
We're gonna talk about mushrooms and murders, beef Wellington and butthole problems. Boop. Dollar colons getting removed.
David
Oh, nothing. Don't worry about it. Have you ever had any colon problems?
Kate
It's just a dream. Yeah.
David
Did it sound like this or was it more like this?
Harley
More like the second one.
David
More like the second. What about. What about this one? Was it more like this?
Ethan
Just how that one starts building every time.
David
David, it sound like that.
Harley
David, don't be ridiculous.
David
Sorry.
Kate
Only. It's only the first part of that. Okay, so they're at the house. They eat this.
Ethan
She. She ate hers on a special different
Kate
colored plate, smaller plate. Yep. Yep. And then everybody gets sick. They all go home, things are okay. They have a little bit of like tummy trouble. That first night. And they all. They're just like, oh, it's probably just like a stomach bug or something. They don't think anything of it. But the next day they are all scared at how sick they are and they go to the hospital. So the in laws, the aunt and uncle all go. Aaron Patterson also goes to the hospital claiming she has stomach pains and diarrhea, but she doesn't have the same symptoms as anybody else.
Ethan
She's also lying, fully lying. Although I got to give it to her for her being there, to being like, ouch. Yeah, guys, right?
Kate
Yeah, she went. It was very weird. She went that first day for like a couple minutes, and then she refused to be admitted. And then she came back two days later and put herself, like, admitted herself and got on a drip and they transferred her and everything. And so she was kind of playing it up at that point, but here she is. I believe this is the first time. God damn it. This is the first time when she refused to be admitted. We'll just see. They called the cops because the doctors were so worried that she wasn't admitting herself or letting herself be admitted. They're trying to stop her. They're trying to stop her from leaving. They're like, please. Oh, yes.
Ethan
So wait, so she came here, said she wasn't feeling well, but then she wouldn't stick around. Why? Because they probably wanted to run some tests or see what she consumed and then they'll see that she didn't eat the same as everyone else.
Kate
Yes, exactly.
Ethan
So she wanted to be there, be on a drip, look sick, and then be like, no, no, no, you're not running.
Kate
Yeah, so they, yeah, they tried to get her to stay this first time, but then the cops came. She's like, oh, I got shit to do. I got to pick up my kids, I gotta get my dog. It's like a whole thing. And this nurse is like, I don't get paid enough for these sheets. These sheets. Crocky.
Ethan
It's such a cute accent.
Kate
I know. I love it. I love it. So, yeah, she's just trying to talk her out of leaving essentially.
Ethan
And like, I'm sorry, dude. Which is all the bags. Are you a Chambala? How much poison are you literally carrying on? You literally have like a poison bag.
Kate
Were you like, this feels like you were planning to stay and then you're like, actually, no, I think at this point is also when she had a run in with the doctor who kind of already knew she'd poisoned people because he was.
Ethan
He knew the Husband.
Harley
Her.
Kate
The husband's doctor had called him and said it is possible these people have been intentionally poisoned. That was like all in the same day. That first day that everyone went to the hospital, the doctor raised a red flag to his friend. And luckily he did because she didn't say. She didn't say anything about the mushrooms. She didn't say anything about what possibly could be wrong with these people. And so if. If the other doctor hadn't alerted his. His friend at the hospital, it would have been days before they figured it out and actually tried to treat it. And unfortunately, it was already too long by the time they found out. So I think this is her saying she's pro. She's refusing care, but, yeah, she was definitely planning to stay. She's got a whole little backpack.
Ethan
Yeah, yeah. And then they must have just. They must have literally been like, hey, we'll just see what if you guys all experiencing the same. We'll run some tests. And yeah, we're also like, she's just like. She's like a crazy person. She could just be like going in and out of. I have no idea. Her brain just.
Kate
It's really hard. It's really hard to know. She clearly felt guilty and we'll see that. But. Oh, another piece.
Ethan
When she killed people that didn't even know her.
Kate
Like, didn't even know her. Had nothing to do with the situation.
Ethan
Like, and this didn't solve anything.
Kate
Not a single thing. Not a single thing. But I think she freaked out because when she met this doctor, he's like, oh, what's your name? Because she's like, I'm just having a bit of. Bit of tummy trouble. Just want to come in, right? And he's like, oh, that's. That's weird. We have four people here having the same thing. Like, what's your name? And she said, aaron. And he said, oh, we've been waiting for you. And so she freaked out because he knew who she was. He knew that she was connected to the other cases. And so that I think they were gonna put some stuff together really quickly. So she's like, no, thank you. I will just. I will just go home. So. So, yeah, that happens. Everybody's in the hospital except for Aaron, and they are deathly, literally deathly ill. This is the doctor. Alarm bells are going off for him. Like I said, the more. The very morning after the lunch is when Simon, bald, bald husband called his. His friend Dr. Ford, who called this guy. This is the guy that confronted Aaron at the hospital and was like, oh yeah. Bitch, get in here. We were worried, we were worried you were gonna come in and I mean, I'm assuming you have the same thing as they do. So he spooked her, but he was also able to start treating the people. But still they didn't know it was the mushrooms. They kind of thought it was death cap mushrooms, but they weren't entirely sure
Ethan
just from the symptoms because of like how, what was going on?
Kate
Yeah, yeah, okay. And I guess in this, in this state of Australia, in Victoria, there had been a pretty recent warning released by the, by the government about death cap mushrooms. I guess they were multiplying in the area and people were getting sick. So they, I think they kind of knew what was going on. But the weirdest, saddest thing during this is Don Patterson. So this is bald husband's father. He knew something was up. He knew that he had probably been poisoned by Aaron. And when this doctor came or when the other doctor came to check on bald husband and his family, well, just check on the family because the bald husband wasn't in there when he came to check on him. John was. Ardan was holding on to a jar of his own vomit as evidence.
Ethan
And he was like, knew. He knew something was up. So he was like, check this out.
Kate
Yes, yes. So he was like in the.
Ethan
Because once you're sick and you think back on, you're like, everything was weird. She had a different colored plate, like, you know what I mean?
Kate
And you have nothing to do but sit there and think about it as you're literally dying. Right. And so the doctor said, as best as I can remember, he held the jar of vomit up and said, I've got this sample. What do you think I should do with it? Oh, is this doctor. It was this doctor, not the other one. I then replied saying, hold on to it because it could be useful later. There was implied meaning in there, but nothing more explicitly. And so by the end of that day, they knew that it was the death cap mushroom. But it was, I mean, it was just going to be too late for most of them, unfortunately. And again, she could have said something at any point and more of these people would be alive. So about the death cap mushroom. It is the deadliest mushroom in the world. It is responsible for 90% of mushroom related fatalities every year. Every year. This is the mushroom that kills the most people. And it is, I know, it's really cute and it looks like others, it looks like other mushrooms to be very, very careful. I like the idea of foraging, but I am not detail oriented enough to not die from eating weird mushrooms.
Ethan
Yeah, I'm more of a hunter, less of a gatherer.
Kate
Sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Have you done mushrooms? Of course you have. Do you like mushrooms? Not the point.
Harley
Mushrooms.
Ethan
Mushrooms is very interesting.
Kate
Say more.
Ethan
It is. It is like you could feel awkward in front of your best friends of all like that you've known your whole life. You could do some weird stuff. It also, like, I noticed it picks up from where you left off. So like, I haven't done it in a long time. So like, if I do it again, I'll like pick up my thoughts from where they last.
Kate
Shut up. Are you serious?
Ethan
Oh, look, it's Mushroom Harley again.
Kate
Remember these Mushroom Harley. Where have you been?
Ethan
Similar to acid. But what's fun about acid is acid is like if you and someone else both take acid, it is highly likely if it's the same one, that you'll have the same experiences.
Kate
Like the same visual stuff. Oh, cool.
Ethan
Like a long time ago, I remember looking at the end of the street and it looked like it was at night time. And it looked like a car was a just about to come around the corner. I saw the headlights coming and then it would fade away and it'd be like, oh, there's no car there. And then again it would like the car would be coming and it would just be the. And I was looking at the front. We're like, oh, look, a car's coming. No, there's no car. But we were on cue for the same fake car that never came. So I think maybe our eyes were like noticing the wind in a way
Kate
or something like that and reading the
Ethan
same way and picking up. Picking up on it in a weird way.
Kate
Interesting.
Ethan
Yeah. You know that, you know the fun picture of Ab, like Ab Shimbala picture. The whole time I was on he, he. That's all he looked like the entire.
Kate
He just looked like Flocka to you.
Ethan
The whole. That's what he looked like all, all the time. And I was, I was scared. I was like, he wasn't on acid. But I was like, I'm so scared of what I look like to him because he looks like this to me.
Reporter
Whoa.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
I wonder what you would look like to Ab on acid.
Ethan
Terrifying.
Kate
Scary. I bet that would be scary. But anyway, death cap mushrooms. Really, really bad. Easy to figure out that they are the worst. They're actually tied to very famous deaths, poisoning deaths, including Roman Emperor Claudius and in 54 AD and also the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V6. And it causes liver and kidney failure, and it happens very, very, very quickly. There's no. There's no cure. There's no.
Ethan
How does this mushroom do that? That's so wild.
Kate
I don't know. It's just very concentrated poison.
Ethan
Have you really considered how insane mushrooms are?
Kate
I have.
Ethan
Like, they're really crazy. They, like, they.
Harley
Very cool.
Ethan
They. They. They can. They can grow with no light and no water. They spread through the air with their
Kate
spores, and underground, they're all connected to each other.
Ethan
Yeah. And they communicate. There's noises coming out of them. You know, you ever see that, where they put, like, things into them and you can hear the noises that. It's like singing kind of.
Kate
They're crazy. There's a. We talked about it.
David
The.
Kate
The witch show that I liked. Fort Salem. Is that what it's called? Motherland? Fort Salem. And it's. Yeah, they're The. The mushrooms are, like, a huge part of it. Like, when you die, you, like, become part of, like, the myself.
Ethan
You become.
Kate
Yeah, you become.
Ethan
You become.
Kate
You becoming.
Ethan
Big coming, man.
Kate
There we go. All right. So very, very, very, very deadly.
Ethan
And I'm so sorry. I. My mom called me during the show, and I see she doesn't realize she's leaving a voicemail.
Kate
Oh, I love it. It's just.
Ethan
It's just growing. I see the text, and when mine dies, I'll buy anyone. My aunt got the same way you have, sir. I don't know. I downloaded stuff with Kindle. She got the same one that she has.
Kate
Store.
Ethan
Yeah, they have something like that. Yeah, they're. I know. Like, I'm going to eat. Threw it down the school computer. They're asking everyone if they're remembering. Yeah. And they went down there and asked somebody. You know what? I don't know. We should. One to six. Just, like, a voicemail.
Kate
What?
Ethan
And I didn't know. It just, like. It just, like, pops up on the screen. I didn't know that. It just starts to, like, do. Let me make sure there's nothing weird there. Yeah, it just starts to, like. I didn't know it does that.
Kate
That's bananas. She's like, butt dialing you.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
Shout out, Heather. We love Heather. All right, so here's where things get really, really sad. Heather and Gail, the sisters, die on the same day.
Ethan
That's crazy.
Kate
Five days after.
Ethan
No, that's my mom and her sister's name.
Kate
Nah.
Ethan
Yeah. Heather, Gail, Donna, and Debbie.
Kate
Nah.
Ethan
Yeah, it's crazy.
Kate
Can we talk about why Boomer's parents love the name Donna? So Much.
Ethan
They love Adonna.
Kate
I know so many boomer Donnas.
Ethan
Yeah. Donna.
Kate
My mom has two best friends, both named Donna.
Ethan
Yeah, I think. I think Donna skipped maybe a generation or two. I feel like Donna's ready to come back.
Kate
You think Donna's coming back?
Ethan
I think a Donna is good.
Kate
It's a sick name, honestly.
Ethan
Yeah, there was that band, the Donnas.
Kate
I love the Donnas. Of course.
Ethan
I watched the whole video about them, and they, like. Apparently they just, like, they. They did the Ramones, but high school girls.
Kate
Oh, did you? They were amazing. They were awesome.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
And now they're all just, like, social workers. They, like, don't do anything anymore. They don't play. It's sad, but. Yeah, they're, like, on LinkedIn, they just, like, did a couple songs, and then we're just like, okay, I'm just gonna go do my life.
Ethan
Yeah, we did it. We're gonna be people now.
Kate
Yeah. It's crazy. I love their songs. Yeah. So sadly, Heather and Gail both died on the same day. And then. Don't. The dad who was holding on to the evidence, they gave him a liver transplant, and even that didn't work. And he also passed away the following day. And I. For me, the saddest part is that one guy was left alive. Ian. Ian Wilkinson.
Ethan
Yes. That's really hard. I can only imagine. I can't even imagine the survivor's guilt.
Kate
Like, these are all his best friends.
Ethan
Like, yeah, your wife. Your best friend is your wife. The. Your best friends, like, and your.
Kate
Your sister's. Your wife's sister and her husband, like.
Ethan
And like, you're like, at this sick woman's house, you're like, why did we go.
Kate
All for that? All for that? Exactly. Like, for what reason? Why was this done to us? Why? Why, why, why? Why?
David
Cancer.
Kate
Yeah. All for fake cancer and weird. I don't know, revenge. It didn't even seem to be about money. Like, that's the. The motive to me is like, okay, is it just mental illness?
Ethan
That's what it feels like.
Kate
She just wanted to hurt Simon, her husband. I guess so. Yeah. Ian survived, but it took him seven. Over seven weeks to recover.
Ethan
You know, they were so painful, brutal, and you had to go through, like, mourning throughout all of this.
Kate
Yes, he was. He wasn't discharged until September 23rd. All this happened, remember, in late July. And then the funeral was held just a few days later at the beginning of October. For. For Heather or for Gail. Yeah. Really, really, really sad. Oh, no, Heather. Heather is his wife. Gail is. Is the mom. So then we get Aaron's interrogation. Now I have a few clips here and I'm going to warn you, the audio is fucking terrible. There's like a static to it. I asked Zach if there was anything we could do to fix it, but
Ethan
he's doing main show, so this falls on David. We're sorry he couldn't figure it out for you guys.
Kate
So let me just set these up.
David
No, Stinger was my fault too.
Kate
It's all David's fault. No, David, you didn't make senior this week.
David
Yeah, I know. I don't know what happened.
Ethan
Oh, two ups.
David
I do everything and I just forgot.
Harley
David, you're a Chinese asset.
Kate
He's sabotaging the show.
Ethan
Chinese asset?
Kate
Chinese. He's sabotaging the show. Oh my God. All right, one more sec here just so we can fly through these when we're ready. How's everyone doing out there?
Ethan
I'm good. Oh me? Yeah, them.
Kate
You?
Ethan
I'm good.
Kate
You're good?
Ethan
Yeah, I'm good.
Harley
Good.
Kate
How was your weekend?
Ethan
It was good. I had, I had a lot of sleep to catch up on.
Kate
Yeah. You feeling right as rain now?
Ethan
Yeah, I think I. I think I like dodged a sickness. I think I was getting sick.
Harley
Oh.
Ethan
I think if we would have had our initial trip planned, I feel like would have gotten sick on it.
Kate
Oh, well then I'm glad we didn't.
Ethan
Yeah. And I think quite a few people have been getting sick lately. I don't know if it's like that where you're at, but here and just
Kate
the diarrhea lettuce, that's what people are getting around.
Ethan
I mean, my dad got sick and he was like freaking out that it was the diarrhea lettuce. Oh, people are scared of the diarrhea.
Kate
Yeah. Man, two people have died. Yeah, it's crazy. All right, so here is, here are a few clips from Aaron's interrogation or interview with the police. These happened on August 5th. In the morning of August 5th is when her mother in law and her aunt in law died. So she knows now that they are dead. And then the cops were like, okay, well we have an investigation on our hands. And so they, they brought her in to figure out what exactly was going on. So this first bit is them reminding her that her family members have died and more might die. And she just has like no reaction to it. So again, I apologize for the audio. It's. It's terrible and annoying. So ill that they ultimately ended up
David
in the intensive care unit.
Kate
Can you guys Hear it. Okay.
Ethan
Is there captions?
Kate
Probably.
Ethan
It's actually the accent. It's actually the accent that's really tricky here.
Kate
Yeah, it is.
Ethan
I also hear. I hear the, like, the. The light in the room.
Harley
We, We.
Ethan
We grew up at a hard time, Davey. You don't know what it was like, dude. Where. When we were in high school, bro, all the lights were noisy. I know. Every single night.
David
You.
Ethan
You know this. You know?
David
I do.
Reporter
I do.
Kate
You know.
Harley
Okay, good. Okay, good.
Kate
Okay.
Ethan
Nate and I both know it.
David
We went to a community college, and we were, like, in a basement room
Ethan
that was, like, 80 years old.
Kate
They're keeping.
Harley
Yes.
Ethan
And how loud are those lights? It's so loud, it's crazy once you notice them.
Kate
Oh, God.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
One flickers. Just one.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
So annoying. All right, so everyone lock in. We do have Cap. We do have captions on here.
David
Yeah. Not only is the audio bad, it's Australian accents.
Kate
Yeah, exactly.
Ethan
Australian accent. It's a thick one. A really thick one, too.
Kate
Yeah. They're, like, in suburban Melbourne following Eating at your house, Donald, Ian, Gail, and
David
Heather will become so ill that they
Kate
ultimately ended up in the intensive care unit.
Ethan
Shout out Sean and Marley.
Kate
What?
Ethan
Shout out Sean and Marley.
Kate
Who are they?
Ethan
Kings of online cooking. Ever since I, I, I. Ever since I. Oh, yeah.
Kate
What about. What are they Australian?
Ethan
Yeah, they just sound a lot like this.
Kate
Oh, I see. Okay, I gotcha. So, yeah, all of them got flown to a different hospital or sent to a different hospital because they were just, like, at some, like, you know, rural little hospital.
Harley
Right, right.
Kate
Following that, they had a. A deterioration in their condition and that they become so ill that their livers have failed. Donald underwent transplant last night. No reactions. Really?
Harley
Okay.
David
His condition is still extremely critical.
Kate
As of last report, Heather and Gail passed away. No reaction in relation to Ian.
David
I don't have a current prognosis in relation to where he's at
Kate
as of late yesterday. The diagnosis isn't great with him either. We're trying to understand what has made them so ill. Yeah. While we're asking these questions, the other. Conversely, we're trying to understand why you're not that ill. Yeah. Why are you not ill when these people are all dying?
David
It sounds like this room is being abducted by aliens.
Kate
I know.
David
I'm so bad.
Kate
Do you want to.
Ethan
No. It sounds like we're listening to the video through someone else's phone or speaker that's interrupted by a call. Yeah, it's interrupted by a phone call in their pocket.
Kate
Oh, my God. Yeah, it's like when you put your cell phone near a speaker.
Ethan
He might. Someone might have their phone on next to the recording device in this room, and that's why it's up.
Kate
Do you want me to just mute it and.
Ethan
No, no, it's not that bad.
David
It's not that bad. It's just. It's just funny.
Ethan
It is funny. We're going to keep making fun of it.
Kate
All right, cool. Great. Wonderful.
David
It's like a dialogue. Internet is in the room.
Kate
Yeah, exactly.
David
It's like.
Kate
Yeah. There are points where it sounds like it's taking pictures as well. You'll hear it. It's so weird. But, yeah. So basically they're saying all these people are dying, and we want to know why they're sick and why you're not sick. And she's just. Yeah, she's not helpful at all. Yeah, that's a great question. So you understand why we're interviewing you dying? Yep, I do. But I'm sure you understand, too, that, like, I've never been in a situation like this before, and I've been very, very. You tried. Helpful with the health department through the week. Because I wanted to help that side of things as much as possible because I do want to know what happened. So she did tell the health department what they ate and where they could find the food, but she did not
Ethan
say, hey, I also included mushrooms.
Kate
I put mushrooms in, and maybe there was something, and they were mushrooms that I foraged. Like, she did not say anything that a normal person would say even if they weren't guilty. Right. When you're like, maybe I did something without even knowing it.
Harley
Right.
Ethan
How do you feel about eating someone's house when they forage?
Kate
I don't feel good about it.
Ethan
Yeah. I don't know if I feel about how it's about the modern. The modern man's foraging.
Kate
I don't trust it. Well, it's like into the Wild, that movie. Or. And the book about the guy who went out to Alaska and he dies because, I mean. Spoiler alerts. How old now? But he. He up. He made a mistake. Even though he was so smart, he made a mistake. Like, I don't. I don't trust that. Like, I want to go morel hunting,
Ethan
but what is that?
Kate
Those are like the. You've never seen a morel before? They're like very fancy mushrooms that go for a lot of money. Let me get a picture of one. They look like little penises, These guys.
David
Oh, penis. Are you looking at.
Ethan
No wonder you're gay. That's not what they look like.
Kate
You know what I mean? Just like.
David
What's funny is I knew. I knew what morels were and I was like, they do not look like mean.
Kate
They just got like the long, long penisy shape.
David
They look like coral or something.
Kate
But yeah, but they also look exactly like a poisonous mushroom. Like there's another one that you can't eat. It's like, what are we doing? Just leave the mushrooms alone. We should not be just rolling the dice.
David
I know you can. You can forage for chanterelle mushrooms too, which are also super expensive.
Kate
We did one, one very rainy spring or fall, a whole thing of like hen of the woods mushrooms came up in our yard, and they were delicious.
Ethan
But they don't look.
Kate
They don't look like anything else. Like, they just look like themselves, which was very, very helpful. But there must be, like some rotting wood under the ground. And we got like a huge thing of them and we just put them in everything. And it was great. But past that, even that, I was scared and I was like trying like little bits of it before we actually ate it. So. No, thank you. All right, so, yeah, so she says that she was very helpful, but she didn't tell them it was death cat mushrooms in there. So I've given them as much information she's trying to gain. Somebody offered up all the food and all the information about where the food came from. I fully understand that.
Harley
Yeah. All right.
David
At the house.
Kate
At the house.
Ethan
I must say for the record, again, you.
Kate
You're very helpful at the house. All right, so she's very helpful at the house. Oh, hang on.
David
Crazy how they turn a one syllable word into three sy.
Kate
That will help us with our investigation.
Ethan
Mainly the fruit plato that you said
Kate
Heather bought for you. She tries to blame the dead woman for bringing a flute. Fruit plate.
Ethan
It's like, I don't know. That fruit plate was pretty crazy.
Kate
And that pretty bunk. I didn't touch it. It was pretty weird. Maybe that's it. She tried to blame this whole thing mo actually multiple times on the dead people. Because the other thing she said was that she ate some of the cake that Heather or Gail brought for the lunch and she threw up. So she was not as helpful as she says. All right, and then the next one. Oh, here we go.
David
Gravy in the fridge in the pantry
Kate
that you said was from the night you kept on gravy advice for the base Wellington. So thank you for that. You also pointed out a recipe book on the counter. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you referred me to page 250. Odd residue for beef Wellington.
David
It seems like not only. So on top of having an Australian accent, I think he also has a lisp.
Kate
He does.
David
Because he was like, recipe book.
Kate
Yeah, he does have. And it's not like it's not consistent. It's like on very specific essays.
Harley
Yeah.
David
Can you run that back? Can you run back recipe book?
Kate
Yeah, sure. Just dragging the cop for no reason. Catching strays as he's talking to a murderer. Pointed out a recipe book on the counter. And you referred me to page 250. You're so stupid.
David
Like, already afflicted with an Australian accent.
Harley
And you have a list.
Kate
You're not going to be able to unhear it. Now, the recipe that you caught. Okay, no one. No one, One thinks that the recipe book had death cat mushrooms in a girl. That's not being helpful. On what we saw at your address in. Do you hear the. The digital camera
David
charging up for a flash or something?
Kate
Like, what the. Okay, listen to this. She also tries to blame Asian people in general on what we saw at your address. So another. Okay, so this is at the house.
Ethan
What is that charging noise? RoboCop works at this station and they're charging.
Kate
No, it's like, I told you you'd hear a weird, like, digital camera sound. It's so weird. So, yeah, apparently she said, I don't know. I get a lot of my stuff at Asian grocery stores. I got some mushrooms at an Asian.
Ethan
Blame it on. Blaming it on Asians.
Harley
Wow.
Kate
Yes.
Ethan
Like, Ethan, when there's fires in la,
Kate
you think Asian grocery stores are selling poison? Like, that is so stupid.
Ethan
They're definitely selling stuff you could hurt
Kate
yourself with if you don't know how to like.
Ethan
Yeah, open it.
Kate
It's probably the sharp, like pointy fruits and things.
David
I can't confirm or deny I'm a Chinese asset. But just know that the death cat mushrooms are not at the Asian grocery store.
Kate
God damn it.
David
It's not where we get them.
Kate
Case closed.
Ethan
I guess it would be a good way.
Harley
Way to destabilize our society.
Kate
Death kept mushrooms and forest fires. Oh, Chinese. The Chinese did invent fireworks. We were getting close.
Ethan
The Chinese invented inventing.
Kate
Yo, dude.
Ethan
Oldest culture right now on planet Earth.
Kate
Oh, is that true? Yeah, I would think it was somewhere in Africa.
Harley
Okay. By far.
Kate
Really? Like the oldest continuous civilization. I would just figure it was somewhere in Africa.
Harley
It's China. Cape.
Ethan
Did you have. Did you have a. What? Did you have a debate with someone? What's older Judaism or Chinese culture.
Harley
Way older.
Ethan
I did. I got. I got told.
Kate
Well yeah, that makes sense. Yeah.
Ethan
Couple thousand years. It was like 3,000 to 5,000 or something.
Kate
Interesting.
Harley
The Chinese were already having civil wars and stuff before even Jesus crawled out of the dirt.
Kate
That's how he was born.
David
Yeah.
Kate
Jesus.
Ethan
They're laughing at us right now in China. They're laughing at us.
Kate
Yeah. Okay. Okay, so next up, this next clip.
Harley
Whoa.
David
Oh, Keaton's awake now.
Ethan
What was that?
Kate
Was that Zach?
David
No, that was.
Kate
Or do you have it?
Harley
That was EverQuest.
David
That's ever. That's leveling up in EverQuest.
Kate
Okay, here is Aaron saying she's never for foraged for mushrooms before. We're trying to understand what has made him so ill. Oh, we saw that one. We saw that one. We saw that one.
David
He's like we've seen you forage from Washington.
Kate
Oh, David.
Harley
She's being accused of picking her own mushrooms.
David
We caught you at the scene of the crime.
Kate
No, it's only on the end. The S is on the ends of wood. I've. I've determined with him recipe is in
David
the middle and he said recipe. Oh so.
Kate
Well, it's not at the beginning. It's not at the beginning. He doesn't do beginning S's
David
like to understand why.
Kate
Oh, that's why she had him over where the is the foraging one. This must be it.
Harley
Yo. What is going on? What the is going on in Australia? Why is there audio sound like that?
Kate
It's so bad.
Harley
Wait, no seriously, like you guys update the gear. What the hell? It's like using the same. I think they were banished from England.
Ethan
Someone's got a. Got a phone on. On the device or There.
Harley
There.
Ethan
Yeah, phone or something.
Kate
It's like when you put your phone near a speaker back in the day and when a call was coming through it'd be like.
Harley
But didn't this just happen obviously 2023
Kate
so you would think concerns in relation to the mushrooms and where they've come from.
Harley
Mushroom.
Kate
So now they've. Yeah, they've figured it out. The mushrooms have killed two people so far.
David
Is that something you've done in the past?
Ethan
Foraging for the mushrooms or anything like that?
Kate
Never foraged for mushrooms. So her argument is that she accidentally bought poison mushrooms which are naturally sewn at sold at the Asian grocer.
David
An accidental catching strays for no reason.
Kate
I know. Accidentally made this way. Go ahead.
Ethan
No, you're sorry but to what you're saying about like oh, they. She got it the Chinese store These people, they, they. A lot of times they have this idea of like, that's a good story. And they think no one will ever pursue or be like, where? At the Chinese store? Show me.
David
Right, yeah. So easily disprovable.
Ethan
Like instantly. Like instantly. People always. I watch so many of these interrogations and stuff, and a person is blatantly lying and they say like, man, yeah, I'm pretty sure I just got it there. Or like, I'm busy. And it's like, you don't. You didn't think that the cops would be like, where? Show us. Stand up, draw it on a piece of paper, do anything. They thought that they'd be like, yeah, they won't ask.
Kate
Well, yeah, she probably thought like, oh, yeah, they're gonna think Asian Grocery stores are weird too.
Ethan
Yeah, exactly.
Kate
Open and shut up. You know, that it's like the, that they'll all have the same bias about it.
David
You know, they're like, yeah, I'm white. I don't go there either.
Kate
Yeah, exactly.
David
Who knows what they sell there?
Kate
Like, I don't even know where. I don't know where to start looking for one of those.
David
They sell fish with the heads on them. What else are they selling there?
Kate
Ew, weird. And chickens with their heads on, which they do in France too, by the way. That really freaked me out.
Ethan
And you know, you give the fish head to the, the eldest lady at the table.
Kate
Oh, I hear, like, the cheek of fish is very delicious.
Ethan
That's supposed to be the best part. They like.
David
She's good. Collar's really good.
Kate
Oh, the collar too. I. I think I've had the collar.
Ethan
I didn't mean to say they like that, by the way.
David
Yeah, who?
Ethan
People. I meant to say people like that.
Harley
They do like it.
Kate
They do. I mean, because it's good. Get you some fish head.
Ethan
Hey, but let's use code after dark for fish head.
Kate
All right. For some fish head, brother. Oh, my God, we're so stupid. All right, so now have you ever
Harley
heard of the Happy Fisherman?
Ethan
Nope.
Harley
Google it.
Kate
I don't think I want to not do. You know it, Harley.
Ethan
I'll google it. Keep going.
Harley
Okay, yeah, that's a shirt. Type it. It's a shirt.
Kate
Let's get through this horrible audio. All right, so now they're asking her about why. Why on earth she invited her, her ex in laws and their siblings over for. For lunch, His parents and his uncle and auntie.
David
A little. Went a little Scottish there at the
Kate
end because I've got no other family, so there. She has no other family. She doesn't have a sister.
Reporter
Yeah.
Kate
And I want to maintain those relationships.
David
Someone's, like, sending us.
Harley
What was that?
Kate
It's getting worse.
Harley
Sounded like a spaceship.
David
It's a spaceship and someone sending Morse code.
Kate
What is going on in this room?
David
And there's a submarine sonar machine in there and.
Harley
Yeah.
Kate
Oh, my God.
Harley
Go back like, 10 seconds.
Kate
Yeah, I got you.
Harley
There's a part where it starts speeding up.
Kate
Here we go. I want to maintain those relationships with him. What the is that?
Ethan
That was interesting. That was really weird.
Kate
It's so weird. I don't know what it is. I have never heard audio like this. And I asked Zach. I was like, is there anything we can do?
Harley
He's like, I don't think so.
Kate
Yeah, so it's bad. So there's that. We talked about Dr. Webster seeing her, and she says she couldn't remember when he confronted her, but it was definitely the day that she left the hospital and didn't stay. Oh, here's. Okay, I do want to do these last two. They are important. This is them asking if she owns a dehydrator. Dehydrator, Jared. A dehydrator. It's hard not to do the accent and the list. Apparently they found a. A manual for an electronic or an electric dehydrator for the mushrooms.
Ethan
So she had a dehydrator, but they don't know where the dehydrator is. But she has a manual for a dehydrator.
Kate
Yes. And we know where it went. So I'll show you guys what happened.
Harley
Oh, wow.
Kate
Okay.
David
So they found the manual at her house, and she said, no, I've never had one.
Kate
She's like, I've got manuals of lots of stuff.
Harley
Okay.
Ethan
When did you find a takeaway car?
Kate
Literally yesterday before you dumped it.
Harley
Okay.
Kate
Would you use that for. Like, when I first got the Thermomix,
Harley
I got the worst audio.
Kate
I know, I know. We've got one left. And we actually.
Ethan
And she's a liar.
Kate
She's a full.
Ethan
She's lying to us in bad audio. I have to go to the bathroom. Can you. Can you do soup? Because I don't. I can't miss.
Kate
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We'll do some soupies. The next piece is good. Okay. We're just moseying through this. And I love that David.
David
Gotta love a mosi.
Kate
We love a mosi here.
David
L. Julie said, I got married last week and wore Teddy Glow at my wedding. Thanks. H3 and After Dark for all the laughs. Congratulations. Congratulations.
Kate
Yay.
Harley
Congrats.
Kate
Hang on. Hey, Button goblin said if you dehydrate the mushrooms, you get more potency per weight. Lock that person up. They know too much.
David
Yeah.
Kate
Guilty.
David
Chinese asset.
Kate
They're just Chinese asset.
Harley
A lot of people grow much magic mushrooms at home.
Kate
Oh, that's true. Oh, someone said, talk about the Lindsay Clancy case, and people have asked. I'm not touching that one. It's so horrible and sad. I don't want to talk about that poor family. Yes. Very, very, very, very sad. Postpartum psychosis.
Harley
I've heard enough.
Kate
Yeah, yeah. Bottom line, I don't think she should be in jail. I think she should be getting treatment forever because. Anyway. Continue
David
unsocial. Said, sleep well, sweet child.
Kate
Amen. I hope you are getting a little rest. Okay, good. I never know how long Harley's gonna be gone for, so I'm gonna paint one of my nails. Continue.
David
Too thick to quit. Sent something in Uzbek. I don't know how to say it, but I translated and says, snowflakes are drifting. The north wind is whistling.
Harley
Canceling. Whoa.
Kate
Why an Uzbek? Are they Uzbekistani?
David
It's too thick to quit.
Kate
I didn't know that. That's very interesting.
David
Who, what, where, when, why? 321 said, Yo, Ethan slash David. What are the chances of getting after dark? Collins? We don't have that set up now, I think, maybe, like, on the phone. We don't have that set up now, but maybe sometime in the future.
Kate
Hey, can we do a poll in chat?
David
Sure.
Kate
Can we say, do you think she did it on purpose? I want to see what people say right now.
David
What do you want the poll to be? One more time. Sorry.
Kate
Do you. Do you think Aaron did it on purpose?
David
All right.
Kate
Going for it right now based on the evidence. Okay.
David
Pull up also a reminder to smash that like button.
Kate
The poll. Smash that like button. Thank you.
David
Let me go back to where we were at. Schueler said, guys, I need help. I need some help with my French. And I thought head would be the best place to ask. How do you say, the seal pushed me. Love you guys so much. Family. How do you say it?
Kate
It's gonna sound bad. It's gonna sound bad. Ready? Le mapuse,
Harley
bro.
Kate
Or la. I don't know if it's.
Ethan
No way.
Harley
Say it again.
Kate
La. Ma. It's
Harley
my.
Kate
Yeah. B.
Harley
Oh, my gosh.
Kate
I knew that was coming.
David
Shout out. Hope that helped with your. Your French homework.
Kate
Yeah.
David
Satin fable said, do they make toys for people whose lips are long? Enough to touch the toilet water. Asking for friends.
Kate
Whoa. I mean, what do you. What are you trying to do with the lips? I guess is the question. Like are. Do you want them to be involved in the fun or are they in the way? Looking for like a. A tie back situation? Like what are we. What are we getting into here? I need more information. Anyway. Shout out to your. Shout out to your lips.
Harley
I'm rejuvenated, I think.
Kate
Yay.
Harley
Do you guys mind starting over?
Kate
Oh, yeah, no, it's fine.
Ethan
Well, definitely.
Harley
What did I miss?
David
He's leveled up.
Kate
Do you really want me to summarize while. No, because I can.
Harley
No, I'm kidding.
Kate
Okay.
Harley
I was listening.
Kate
All right. Sick. Harley, you better hurry up. I gotta start soon. While Ethan's awake. Usually he has us on somewhere and he can hear us. Any more soupies before we go back to it?
David
Oh, we still have plenty of soupies. Yeah.
Kate
Okay.
David
Srirachim.
Harley
Good.
David
Said Microsoft scammers try to get me again. And I got blocked from calling them again two days in a row. Hahaha. Shout out to you for fighting back the scammers.
Kate
Yes. Waste their time. Waste their time.
David
Wow. It's Kaylin said, Ethan, people are dead and you're sleeping.
Kate
Wow.
Harley
Yeah, dude, that Bartholomew bit is still paying off.
Kate
Yeah, man.
Harley
I love you.
Kate
Just take a nap anytime.
Harley
I loved it then tomorrow and I love it now. God bless Bartholomew. He's probably dead now, but.
Kate
No. You think so?
Harley
He's. He was quite old. It's been a couple years.
Kate
I feel like I've seen him in something, but it was a long time ago. Would he be. Has he been in things? Does tomorrow know tomorrow?
Harley
Is he. Is he dead?
Kate
That's not what I asked.
David
We got a donation about him actually.
Harley
She said no, he's alive. Bartholomew's alive? Yeah, he is. She said. How do you know that?
Kate
What'd you say?
Harley
David?
David
We got a donation about Bartholomew.
Kate
Oh, what does it say?
David
Mukbang said, no joke. Bartholomew used to be a co worker of mine and he would fall asleep at work like every day. One time he fell asleep during a speaker presentation and our boss made him stand in the back of the room to keep him awake.
Harley
Oh my gosh.
Kate
My God. He is a sleepy boy.
Harley
Yo, I just got an email from Steve. Steve Rossi.
Kate
What?
Harley
Yeah, that. The famous publicist?
Kate
Yeah. What does it say? Who's he representing these days?
Harley
It's just a link to a documentary about Jimmy Lee.
Kate
No commentary, just that. Oh my God. Is it the one that we've Already seen the Jomo or whatever.
Harley
No, no, no. This is his own project. Hold on here, I'll. I'll send you the link.
Kate
Oh, my God.
Harley
Since we're waiting for Harley.
Kate
Yeah.
Harley
He has a clip of me in it with him in the intro.
Kate
Of course he does. Crazy.
David
We actually got an update from straight Kate. You were. You were gone and we were. We thought straight Kate was created because you're gay Kate. Okay, but they said I'm actually bi but married to a man. Frowny face.
Kate
Hey, nobody's perfect. You know what I mean? Nobody's perfect.
David
You made your bed.
Kate
That's right. Now go a minute. Whoa.
David
Caitlyn Hume said Ethan sleeping as Kate is presenting is REM Reminiscent of me sleeping through online lectures during COVID Yeah,
Kate
man, we're just bringing back the COVID era vibes.
Harley
Dude, I slept through so many lectures at college.
Kate
Oh, yeah.
David
Shout out college.
Harley
Come on, bro.
Kate
Shut the.
Harley
What do you expect to happen when you have, like, 6am classes?
Kate
Why did I sign up for an 8am anthropology class? Like I ever thought I was gonna go to that.
David
Because you dumb. Anthropology.
Harley
Because they run out of normal classes and then they force you to do it.
Kate
Yeah, I never went.
Ethan
I got.
Kate
I failed it.
David
Could have taken photography and you took anthropology.
Kate
I know, I know. Listen, I thought I was gonna be, like, a senator or something very stupid at the time. I was trying to take highfalutin classes. Okay, well, should we just go?
Harley
Yeah.
David
Yeah.
Kate
Okay. I know Harley didn't want to miss anything.
Harley
What is he doing? Where does he even go? Where does he even go?
Kate
That's a really great question that we'll never know the answer to.
Harley
Damn.
Kate
All right, the last little bit I just wanted to show is. And that we don't even need the audio. It is just Aaron trying furtively watching this guy take notes.
Ethan
Harley Morenstein is here.
Kate
Is he back? Justin time. Just in time. All right, so I'll put the captions on, but you don't really need them. Yeah, but just. She just starts watching this guy closely because he. He starts asking some questions. I think it was about the dehydrator. Like, he's trying to push on that because they know and they're not telling her.
Ethan
You're probably also so used to, like, someone bullshitting when, you know, like, you're like, oh, that's a lie. Like, I've seen it. It's your job, right? So you see it all the time.
Kate
And he's, like, taking notes kind of, like as a cover, but he's the one that a couple times just asks questions and, and puts her on her heels. And so now she starts watching him, like taking notes about her and keeps trying to look over. This should be the spot.
Ethan
The notes has got to be a police strategy.
Kate
Yeah, like only write a note when
Ethan
you, when you think they're lying. Just pretend to write something.
Kate
Yeah, yeah. And then look, she keeps looking. This is the most she's looked because he got like involved and she's like, oh, what is he writing down? She keeps looking over there. So, yeah, that's her being guilty. What they didn't tell her is that they caught her three days earlier hiding evidence. So there is closed captioned footage of her dumping the dehydrator that she didn't have at a. At a dump site at a tip, as they call it. So this is her getting out of her car. This is.
David
We can't see it.
Kate
Oh, my God. Sorry, guys. Rewind it. Okay, thank you. So here she is driving up to mushroom cook to.
Ethan
To drop off the dehydrator to dehydrate the mushrooms. And now she's gonna go throw it away so no one sees it.
Kate
Right. This is after everyone hospital.
Ethan
How far is this from her?
Kate
I don't think it's far. I think it was local, honestly.
Harley
She's so. She's so chill though.
Kate
Yeah, she's like. She doesn't even put it in a bin. She just like throws it in this room. She just. It just ends up like on the floor in this, in this storage area.
Ethan
It is crazy.
Harley
You know what, she probably wanted to. She probably liked the product and thought about using it.
Kate
Go back and get it. It worked really well. So. All right, so that. Oh, hang on. No, we don't need that. We don't need more of that. All right, so by the way, from
David
the poll from chat, if they thought she did it on purpose, 95 said yes.
Kate
Yeah.
Ethan
2% said no. As a joke.
Kate
Exactly. All right, so here she is. This is during the. The warrant that was served at her house. And they go to collect her phone and she gives them a fake phone.
Harley
84 Gibson street in Llangaffer. Thanks for your patience today. Completing our search.
Kate
So this is August 5th. This is the day she is interrogated. This is three days after she has dumped the dehydrator. Two people are dead.
Ethan
Dump them out.
Harley
The only outstanding item is that mobile
Kate
phone that you've got there.
Harley
So I'll seize that now from you.
Kate
So he's seizing her mobile phone and
Ethan
she has a fake Phone with her.
Kate
She has a fake ass phone. She's gonna give him.
Harley
Do you need. I've got bank card minus hell.
David
Where is this being filmed?
Kate
This is in her house. This is the table that everybody sat at. This is when they're serving the search warrant on her house.
Harley
This is like if Carol from the office killed.
Kate
Yeah.
Harley
A few of her co workers.
David
It's just the camera angle and everything is just so odd.
Kate
Like it's very strange.
Harley
Well, also it's not on a tripod. Somebody's like holding it.
David
Like what it is Phyllis.
Kate
That's a Phyllis. She does look like Phyllis.
Harley
Yeah.
Ethan
That's what's weird about this angle is. Is David, you mentioned it on that other episode where we were. Was it. We were talking about. They were filming in front of the bookshelf and we were talking about how it looks like it was filmed like every single college.
David
Like a student film.
Ethan
Film. Yeah. The ultimate. Someone standing and like filming at an angle downwards at the shot. Yeah, exactly. With like the light behind them.
David
This is like a 2008 sketch YouTube video right here.
Ethan
This is a banger mosh skin. If you let it lay out a little bit.
Kate
Life was easy back then.
David
Yeah.
Kate
Looking through all her. And this is. This is a fake. This is a decoy phone. And in the meantime, in August, she kept her phone and she factory reset it according to the investigation. At least four times.
Harley
Four times. You think it gets cleaner every time you factory reset it.
Kate
Yeah. Well, I'm sure she was like still. Yeah. I think she was still like searching like, how much jail time would I get?
Harley
Guys, listen.
Kate
Yeah.
Harley
To all the prospective criminals, just if you got a hard drive, you've done anything elicit on it, you gotta. You gotta burn it.
Kate
Yeah. Yeah.
Ethan
And to the innocent people whose families are murdered or something like that, no matter what, have a lawyer when you're talking to the police.
Kate
Yeah.
Ethan
Like I don't understand how these situations happen. And there's no lawyer present every single time.
Kate
Even if you're in a.
Ethan
Specially if you're innocent.
Kate
Yeah.
David
Yes. Especially I just. I just imagine her factory resetting and then looking up like, does factory reset leave any trail? And she's like, oh. And she has to do it again
Kate
exactly 20 times a day.
Harley
I don't know what it's like in Australia. Do you?
David
You know, I think they factory reset the same as we do here.
Harley
Yeah. Okay. I wasn't sure.
Kate
No, it goes counterclockwise.
Harley
I don't know if the lawyers turn counterclockwise or Clockwise.
Kate
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's hard to tell.
Ethan
They read the verdict first and then they.
Kate
Yeah, that's how it works backwards.
David
They're all upside down in the court down there.
Kate
Oh, God. All right. So, yeah, so she gets caught hiding evidence, and then she's so funny.
Harley
She's always doing this face and everything I've seen.
Kate
Yes, yes. It became a huge meme. There's a mural of her in Melbourne.
Harley
Oh, my God.
Kate
Which I'll show you guys later. The court sketch artists, like, got famous off of drawing her. Oh, it's a real. It's a real thing. I'll show that in a bit, too. But here, this episode is brought to you by Facebook. So you were scrolling on Marketplace, and there it was, the bike you'd been searching for. You sent a message, and it turned out the seller was super chatty, kind of funny, and an avid cyclist. The next thing you know, you're in a cycling crew. Well, a community cycling group. The thing about Facebook, you might find more than what you're looking for from a browse to a bike ride this summer. Find more on Facebook. She does a couple of interviews with the media like a idiot. This is from the day that Gail and Heather died and the day that she did her police interrogation. She's so dumb. A tragedy what's happened.
Harley
She's awesome, right?
Kate
Rub those eyes, girl. Get that. Get them tears out.
Ethan
I'm so
Kate
devastated by what's happened, by the loss of Ding. Don is still in hospital. The loss of Ian and. Nope, Ian's alive. She can't even keep track who is dead and who is alive. Ian is the only one who has survived. Don, at this point. Point, has had a liver transplant but is going to die. Some of the best people that I've ever met. Gail was like, yeah, what did you do to her? G. The mom that I didn't have because my mom passed away four years ago and Gail's never been.
Harley
Probably gave her mushrooms, too.
Kate
Eh, that's what I.
Ethan
That's what I thought. You got to look at everyone now. Under the Mushroom Land. Friends. Honestly, probably not the mushroom, because she Googled that, didn't she, in 2022.
Kate
Yeah, honestly.
Harley
Pretty inventive, though. Like, I've watched a lot of True Crime and I have never. This is the first time I've heard of assassination by mushroom.
Kate
By beef Wellington. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think that's why it captivated people. It's just such a banana story.
Harley
And, like, Wellington, you can't. You can't Say no to Beware Beef Wellington.
Kate
It's classy.
Harley
You're not like, I'm not in the mood. Everyone gets stoked.
David
Yeah.
Kate
David, have you made it?
David
I have not made it, but I have eaten it.
Kate
You seem like someone who would make. Know how to make a beef Wellington.
David
I know how to make it. I just haven't done it.
Harley
But then you don't know how to make it, David.
Kate
Liar.
Harley
Well, you. You don't do beef Wellington. Stolen valor if you've never cooked it.
Ethan
Yeah, I've done it.
Harley
Well, he's the. He's the one that would have done it. That big meal time guy, but he
David
did it with Gushers and.
Ethan
No, I'll have you know, first of all, we never did a candy Wellington. We did a fast food Wellington. We did it with McDonald's.
Kate
Okay, but that, that candy thing, the toffee thing, taffy, whatever. That looks like a beef Wellington.
David
It did.
Ethan
I guess it was kind of. It was a beef Wellington.
Kate
Was gusher time was just be Wellington.
Ethan
No, there was. It was lasagnas, actually.
Kate
Oh, lasagnas.
Ethan
Lasagnas. We, we, we, we figured out a method where it was. You had fast food or barbecue or candy or Italian or Mexican. And then on the other hand, you had lasagna or castle or sandwich or what? And you just mix and match them. Yeah, you just mix and match them.
Kate
Smart. Very smart.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
All right, let's listen to.
Ethan
That's why it took so long to drive the channel into the ground.
Kate
There was a foolproof system. Slow burn, slow march to there.
David
It was a pinhole that was drowning. The boat
Kate
really just ran itself kind to me. Not a single tear, by the way. Not a single tear.
Ethan
I hate when people do the fake cry and there's no tears. It's like, how do you. How do you stand there and keep doing it?
David
And she. She could tell it's not working, so she's just, like, keeping her eyes closed most of the time.
Kate
Speaking of Jimmy Lee, I mean, it's just histrionic personality disorder. If I were a diagnosing kind of person.
David
Check Jimmy's mushroom.
Kate
I never did anything wrong. I'm so devastated about what's happened. Yeah. Don't eat Jimmy's cooking. Ethan, can you tell us. To the community and the family and to. My own children have lost their grandmother. Yeah. You killed their grandparents and, like. And an aunt and uncle that were not even, like, involved. It's just so weird.
Reporter
Can.
Kate
Can you tell us a bit more about the lunch?
David
Nope.
Kate
Sure not.
David
How did you prepare the beef Wellington?
Harley
Was it medium rare? Did you overcook the beef Wellington?
Kate
Was it mighty?
David
I'm rare.
Harley
So how does she explain that she didn't get sick?
Ethan
She said she did, kind of.
Kate
Yeah.
Ethan
She, like, went in for it.
Kate
Yeah, she kind of tried to cover for it, but then the doctor who was in the hospital had already been tipped off that they might have been poisoned by her, and so she showed up, and he was like, oh, I know you. We've been waiting for you. And she was like, actually, I gotta go. And she didn't say stay at the hospital because she would not have had the same symptoms, and they would have figured things out more quickly.
David
You missed that. You were. You were.
Harley
Yeah, she should have taken a little bite if she was smart. Like, not enough to kill her, but just, like, a little bite.
Kate
Well, I think she knew that she couldn't because even a little bite. Half a mushroom will kill someone.
Harley
Is that right?
David
Especially if you dehydrate it.
Ethan
And I guess. I guess you don't know. You don't know how much mushroom would be in each bite, I guess, if it was spread out.
Kate
Yeah, she.
Ethan
But just do it. Just eat it. Also.
Kate
Just die.
Ethan
Get out of here.
Kate
Literally, just. This is my thing about people. The. The family annihilator thing. Just kill yourself.
Ethan
Just be a man. And do you only.
Kate
Why do you just. Do you only, like, why do you have to kill everybody else?
David
Well, okay, like, why the. The target was the X?
Harley
To be fair, guys, we don't know everyone. We don't know how annoying the people she killed are. You're saying kill yourself. We don't know them from what we
Kate
know from the living. The lone survivor. They were beautiful people.
Harley
Yeah, no. Yeah. No, I don't know.
Kate
Yeah, no. Yeah, totally. Okay, let's listen to her cry more again. She's going to be asked about the lunch, and she just totally acts like it didn't happen. And to the families and to my own children, and I've lost their grandmother.
Harley
Ew.
Kate
Can you tell us a bit more about the lunch?
Harley
Tell us about the lunch.
David
Just cutting her off.
Kate
Yeah. What I can tell you
Reporter
is that
Kate
I just can't fathom what has happened. I just can't fathom what has happened.
Ethan
That's the line that she worked on.
David
Yeah.
Ethan
I can't fathom that's the one she worked on.
Kate
And again, it is Heather and Gail who are dead. It is not Ian and Heather. So right now she thinks. She thinks. Or she. In her brain, she has said oh, it's just the aunt and uncle who are dead and that's fine. Lost her life and Donna's still in hospital and I pray they're all up. I pray that he pulls through because my children love him. And you must be pretty shaken up.
David
What about you?
Kate
She's like, come on, come on, come on, come on, get them tears. I'm devastated. I love them and I can't believe that this has happened. And I'm so sorry that they have lost. Not that I did something, but that they've lost their lives. Dry as.
Ethan
This is the way.
Kate
As a bone.
Ethan
This is the stop asking me questions, I'm done now thing.
Kate
Yeah. Just gonna start sobbing. Yeah. I can't, honestly.
David
First red flag should have been beef Wellington for lunch. Who the makes beef Wellington for lunch?
Kate
Well, you know, abroad they do like a. A heavier meal at lunchtime.
Harley
What time did they eat it at? Do we know?
Ethan
I mean, if you.
Kate
I think midday.
David
If she's making beef, she had to start lunch at like 7am.
Kate
And I mean, who knows how long it took to dehydrate those death cat mushrooms.
David
Did she do a full laugh around the car? What is she doing?
Kate
Yeah, I don't. And look at this guy. The property area, zooming in.
Ethan
Is he a reporter, that guy?
Kate
Yeah. Do you have anything to say about that? Police say that you're a suspect.
Ethan
So what are they doing over there in Australia? They're doing a longer jacket. A longer sports coat. Is that the style there?
Kate
At least three year. Three years ago? Yeah, I guess maybe it's a little che.
Ethan
Is that a suit or is it like an overcoat? Is it part of. Oh, it probably is.
Kate
It's probably an overcoat because July is winter for them, right?
David
Yeah, it's. It's.
Kate
Everything's backwards and upside down, so it's probably chilly there. A little over overcoat. He's like, sure, I'm not going to tell you. Yeah, sure, sure. Sounds great. I say I didn't do anything. I love them and I'm devastated they're gone.
Ethan
And I hope
Kate
with every fiber of my being that Don pulls through. That's what I have to say. Where do the mushrooms come from?
Ethan
So everyone at this point knows that the mushrooms.
Kate
He knows it's the mushrooms. Yeah, everybody knows. Yeah, they all know.
David
And I told you it was the Chinese store.
Kate
It was a Chinese store.
David
What meal did you cook them?
Kate
Nothing. Did you eat the same meal there, Aaron?
Harley
It's a nice store.
Kate
Yeah, right? I kind of like it.
Harley
Gorgeous.
Kate
So yeah, she's really trying to. To lay it on thick. So this is August 5th. Like a week or so later, she makes a full statement to the police because she's panicking because now Don has also passed away. So the three people who were going to die have died. Ian is still in critical care, and it will take him weeks to recover. And at this point, we know Aaron knows she's a suspect, and she sends a letter to the Victoria police to clear things up.
Ethan
AKA just so you know, I'm not trying to get involved, but, you know, I didn't kill these people.
Kate
Yeah. I just, like, want to say throw that out there. Yeah, exactly. So she says that she served the meal and allowed the guests to choose their own plates.
Harley
Oh, exciting.
Kate
Yeah. After which she took the last plate and ate a serving. Now what?
Ethan
You choose all of these plates here. Any of these ones not that small, different colored one. These ones.
Kate
Any of these that look exactly the same, have your name on it? Yeah, The. The. Ian says that she ate in a smaller, different colored plate than the rest.
Ethan
And you said that they all got their own beef Wellington?
Kate
Yes. Everyone.
Harley
Yeah.
Ethan
They didn't get slices. That is crazy.
Kate
Nah, that right there is like. You did it.
Harley
Who eats a whole beef Wellington to the dome?
Kate
Well, I mean, they weren't all this big. They all got a little one.
Ethan
Still. It's still like.
Harley
It's not.
David
She made it like a restaurant, like a family. Because a family, you would just have the whole tenderloin. Yeah, yeah, but you do that.
Kate
She couldn't find that.
Ethan
Yeah, but she couldn't find that.
Harley
But she could find Danley mushrooms and a mushroom.
Kate
Exactly. At the Chinese store.
David
It was a Chinese that did it.
Kate
The Chinese assets did it. Okay, so she says.
David
Assets.
Kate
Assets. After the onset of symptoms, she said she was contacted by the Department of Health and gave what was left of the lunch to the hospital toxicologist. Wait till you see it. On top of it being poisoned. It looks so gross.
Ethan
I knew. I knew it, too. That's the worst part. Foul is you leave this place sick and you're like. For that beef Wellington, your last meal
Kate
is not just poison. It's disgusting. Okay.
David
You can look at certain people, be like, they don't know how to cook.
Kate
Yeah, yeah. She said that she told investigators where she bought the mushrooms. She was unable to identify the specific shop in Melbourne, but did say it was an Asian grocery store. Thank you.
Ethan
Emphasize the Asian aspect.
Kate
She did. She did emphasize it. I will say her kids said she had never been to an Asian Grocery store with them. And so this was all made up. She also addressed media reports.
Ethan
You know, she said, one of those Asian stores.
Kate
One of those.
Ethan
Sean, she's like, one of those Asian stores.
Kate
Yeah.
David
As you all know, especially Harley, traditionally, the mushrooms that you get for a beef Wellington is from one of those Asian grocery stores has to be.
Kate
Oh, my God.
Ethan
Speaking about Asians, I went to Chinatown here in Montreal.
Kate
Get that button ready.
Ethan
And there was. There was Chinese people working at a restaurant, and they had a menu with Chinese writing.
Kate
Yeah.
Ethan
And also one with English writing. And I was like, oh, what's that? What are the. What are these items here? I can't be certain. I can't be certain if it was. If it was Mandarin or not.
Kate
Well, Mandarin is. Is. Isn't it the same for both Mandarin, Cantonese?
Ethan
I don't know if it's the same characters, actually. I can't. I can't confirm.
Kate
I thought it was.
Ethan
Deny such a thing. I don't know.
Kate
Anyway, continue.
Ethan
Yeah. And apparently, apparently, like, in restaurants, they speak Fujinese, which is like a Cantonese
Harley
offshoot just in restaurants.
Ethan
It's its own. Yeah. Like, the restaurants have their own language.
Kate
Heard that word before.
Ethan
Something is very interesting. But I saw it. I was like, oh. I was like, what's all this Chinese over here?
Harley
Yeah.
Ethan
And the guy was like, you can't read that. And I was like, no. And he's like, then you can't order it.
Kate
Yeah. He's like, that's the real. For the real house.
Harley
All right.
Ethan
All right.
Kate
Yeah.
Ethan
That's why I got, like, a little white box that folds open. And I sat down over there. With your ch.
Kate
Fingers.
Ethan
Yeah. And over on that table, they had, like, bowls with noodles I've never seen before. Everyone's laughing.
Kate
Yeah. We have a din someplace like that, but they let all of us order either one, which is nice.
David
And you have.
Ethan
Hello.
Kate
Why don't you eat a hamburger
Ethan
off Round eye. But that was years ago. Since then, I've. I've entered. I've been. I've been.
Kate
You're on board now. We love that.
Ethan
Now they call me Ling Jai.
Kate
What does that mean?
Ethan
Google it.
Kate
Big boy, huge dick, hairy man. Come, big cummy man is what that means.
Ethan
I'm Ling Gian. You're Ling north man.
Kate
I'm what?
Ethan
You're Lang Noi.
Kate
What does that mean?
Ethan
Google it.
Kate
Does it mean cool person?
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
Girl or boy?
Harley
Yeah.
Kate
All right. Cool. All right.
Ethan
So.
Kate
Yeah. So she lies to the cops, obviously. She addresses media reports that police had seized a food dehydrator at the dump. She says that she admitted that she lied to the investigators and because she told them that she had, you know, thrown it out ages ago. Right. She only had the manual. She admits in this letter that she lied and that she did have the food hydrator, but that she panicked when her husband said, oh, is that what you use to poison them? And then. So she went and dumped it. The husband denies ever having said this. She clearly was just panicking because she was seeing the heat coming down and. And dumped it. So basically she was just saying that, you know, she's panicked and made a lot of stupid choices.
David
What a dumb thing to say. I got accused of something I didn't do, so I destroyed evidence of something that I didn't do.
Ethan
Yeah, like those boys that came back without their friend and they all had their social media.
Harley
I'll be right back.
Kate
Continue. Yeah, that whole thing is so complicated. I'm so glad that Nancy Grace is on that. She is gonna tear Mississippi a new a hole. Looking for what's going on down there. So shout out. I'll be keeping an eye on that for show. Okay, so, yeah, so she writes this dumb letter. It's a bad idea. Again, no lawyer involved. She has no legal representation, clearly, because yet again, she gets caught on camera and just has. Again, has a lot to say. And this is, I believe, the same day that she wrote the letter. This is around the same time.
Reporter
And I'm breathing, too.
Kate
And you guys don't have any for that. They're like, yeah, yeah, sure. I'm just going to block your porch. Yeah, of course. Of course.
Reporter
You're grieving.
Kate
Yes.
Ethan
They're driving there and they're like, remember, guys, she killed these people. So put those microphones in her face. We don't give a. We're getting. We're getting. We're getting the done today.
Kate
Hey, remember, no rules.
Ethan
I want to quote, she's not mourning. Guys, remember that lock in 98%.
Kate
She did it. So get them mics up, up and 24. 7.
David
Block her from entering her house.
Kate
Girl. This kind of behavior will send someone to drive off a bridge. Oh, now we're threatening to kill ourselves?
Ethan
Is that what she said?
Kate
She said, this kind of behavior will threaten to. Hang on, let me. Do I have captions.
Ethan
Then she'd be like, and. And then what? Look, then you'll all be murderers.
Kate
Yeah, and then you'll all feel bad. I bet you'll feel so bad. And it was your fault. She's.
Ethan
She's literally hitting That's a move. I like how she's going to move and he's got the mic and blow my brains out alive.
Kate
She's like, please, I'm grieving. He's like, yeah, sure, come on over here. Will you get away from these steps? Yeah, sure.
David
He, like, runs in front.
Kate
Please, I'm grieving. Absolutely. Remember, guys, she definitely did it. I think I'd be good at this. That job. You don't have any permission to be on my. I don't give a. This kind of behavior will send someone to drive.
David
He put the extender on that mic so he could get it. Really?
Kate
I know, right? If he telescopes it into her house. Yeah. She said this kind of behavior will make someone to drive off a bridge. That's what you seem to be doing.
Ethan
You.
Kate
You spoke yesterday about your relationship. Can you tell us, have you had
Harley
any further update today?
Kate
How Ian's going? Aaron, how are you going? How are you going? I'm going, oh, here we go. Aaron. Oh, yeah, an Australian thing is they don't say, how are you doing? They say, how you going? And so they ask her how Ian's going, the only guy that's still alive, and how she's going. You don't have any permission to be on my private property, whatever that means. This kind of behavior will send someone to drive off a bridge.
David
That's what you're saying to be you doing yesterday about.
Harley
Can you tell us, have you had any further update today?
Ethan
How going, Aaron?
Kate
How are you going?
David
Are you.
Reporter
I'm going.
Kate
Thanks for asking, and you guys aren't helping. I'm going. Thanks for asking, and you guys aren't helping. Oh, Aaron, you crazy, crazy girl. So November 2nd, that's like what, four months. No, three months after she allegedly poisoned them? Well, I guess now, yeah, she did poison them. She's arrested and charged with three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder of her in laws and their relatives. And this includes the attempted murder. Charges include four counts of attempted murder on Simon from all the times that he got sick.
David
They got her for the rat poison, too.
Kate
Well, they tried. They tried. Oh, okay. Those charges, for some reason got dismissed right before trial, and it's not clear why. Maybe they just wanted to focus on the big. The big case. I'm not sure. But those allegations were also not admissible in the main trial, so no one was allowed to bring up the fact that she had potentially tried to poison her husband like a dozen times. Well, not a dozen, but a bunch of times. She, of course, Pleaded not guilty. Her legal team says she panicked after unintentionally serving poison to her family members in a terrible accident, which I guess could be true, but literally, where did you find death cat mushrooms? And why would you put that in your beef Wellington?
Ethan
And she Googled it, didn't she? What was her Google searches? They were bizarre, right?
Kate
Yes. And we have. For the trial, we found out a bunch of stuff like that. Is someone drinking? Was that Harley drinking?
David
I was. A little later on, yeah.
Kate
Nice, nice. Okay. All right, so the trial starts. We heard all kinds of testimony, and these are some of the highlights. Unfortunately, there were no cameras allowed in the courtroom, which is such a bummer. But I think that's why the court sketch artists ended up getting famous from this. So, first of all, when I put in our.
Ethan
In our little. In our little special chat box there. Here's. It's just a picture of the. The thing that the mural.
Kate
Oh, yeah.
Ethan
There's a spoiler on it, though.
Kate
Yeah, I have it. That's like, my last frame, so.
Ethan
Of course you have it. What am I doing? Of course you have it. Look, you killed this. You killed this.
David
You think she doesn't have.
Ethan
Guys, don't listen to David. He didn't do. She did all of them.
Kate
I had a nightmare. Nightmare about beef welling poison beef Wellington, and my dog's eating it. It was like all the. The poison mushrooms were, like, crumbling in my hands and falling down, and Clementine just kept eating them. It was so scary.
Ethan
I had a nightmare that I strangled Ab. And then him didn't him.
Kate
Okay, sorry.
David
Just have to wait and watch the
Kate
video and see spoilers. Yes, spoilers. Okay, so one of the things that comes out during the trial is a bunch of her online friends are interviewed. Doesn't seem like she had any, like, in person friends, but apparently she had made friends with a bunch of women in a group on Facebook called Keep Kelly Lane Behind Bars. Now, Kelly Lane was a former water polo player who was found guilty of killing her own Baby in 1996. And so Aaron and these other people were, like, obsessed with Kelly Lane, talking about the trial, which had happened, like, years before, and they bonded over this, talked about other true crime stuff. And according to the friends, she was a really good researcher and a bit of a super sleuth in the group. And this. This friend added that Patterson was very unhappy with Simon, described him as controlling and coercive, and shared her challenges in the relationship with the. Her friends online, including how it was difficult dealing with his parents, religion, Because I guess she was an atheist. She told her friends, but, like, they all went to church together, so I don't really know what that's about. So she, she is just very attention seeking stuff, is what it seemed like. The mushrooms. This photo on the right is a real picture from the, the warrant that they served. When they searched her house, they found death cap mushrooms on a scale. She was weighing out the mushrooms. Now prosecutors say she was weighing them out to make sure she got a deadly dose from the dehydrated mushrooms. On. Of course, she, she denied that. Of course. But another thing she shared with this group of, of gals online was that she had been like, obsessed with mixing dried mushrooms into everything, like powdered mushrooms. So I, I, maybe she started out being, like, obsessed with health benefits, actually.
Ethan
A sick move. It is a good move.
Kate
Yeah.
Ethan
Chaga mushroom elixir. People were vibing with that for a minute there.
Kate
What's that?
Ethan
All those. It's like, just like mushrooms that are good for your brain and stuff like that.
Reporter
Oh, yes.
Kate
What is the word that people use for it? I can't remember now.
David
Sorry.
Ethan
I was in my brain, David, on that old tropics.
Kate
Yeah, we're talking about new tropics, right? It's like nootropics or whatever. Nootropics.
Harley
Whatever the.
Kate
Anyway, so I guess she said, like, I've been hiding powdered mushrooms and everything, mixed it into chocolate brownies. Yesterday, the kids had no idea. And someone put a little pukey face, which I love. So I guess that started it. Like, she had this fixation on, on mushrooms and was doing a ton of stuff with mushrooms. And then soon after, she was experimenting with hiding mushrooms and things. She asked the group if anyone had made beef Wellington. And then we get.
Ethan
And then she was like. And, and also just question for the group. Any of you guys ever kill your family?
Kate
Any?
Ethan
Because we're joking here, but this is actually a serious problem is online groups of women gathering in these spaces and conspiring and talking. You know, we joke about it, but this is serious. It's, it's scary that there's just groups of women out there talking about killing their families.
Kate
These roving covens just planning elaborate death meals.
David
I mean, hey, Kate, not to spoil anything, but I, I saw the last slide of presentation, so.
Kate
Ooh, that's true. That's true.
Ethan
Invite for us to come have beef Wellington at your place.
Kate
Yeah, that's, that's. You're invited. No, there's actually. I've already thought of a sequel to this Presentation.
Ethan
You're like, david, I like you, by the way, so don't eat lunch at work tomorrow.
Kate
Take the small plate.
David
Yeah, take the. Take the small white plate, not the big gray plate.
Kate
Take the little plate, buddy. Okay, love you.
David
Also, yeah, these are the actual mushrooms right here.
Kate
Yes.
David
No shot. Those are sold at a store.
Kate
Look at them.
David
No fucking shot.
Kate
Disgusting.
Ethan
They look stepped on.
Kate
Terrible. They're all different sizes and colors. Like, girl, please. You know, cleaned up mushrooms are like, get the fuck out of here. Okay. So the prosecutor say.
Reporter
Yeah.
Kate
That she was weighing them to make sure she put in enough to kill everyone. And then computer data. They took a bunch of computers from the house in May 2022. So a year before she visited the inaturalist website. And the title of one of the visited page pages was Death cap from Melbourne, VC Victoria, Australia, on May 18, 2022. So she was actively looking at death cap mushrooms. And this was reminder. 2022 was the year that Simon kept getting sick. So maybe it wasn't rat poison. Maybe it was mushrooms all along. It's unclear, but the doctor seemed to think it was rat poison. But we don't know because that. That wasn't ever investigated. That still has not been investigated. Okay, another thing that happens. First of all, does this look like shit from a butt or what? How disgusting. Does that beef Wellington look foul?
Ethan
Absolutely.
David
Yeah, it's awful. I mean, I'm sure it's old.
Kate
And, yes, two days old in the trash.
David
Okay, so that's why there's like, a bell pepper on it or something.
Kate
Yeah, yeah, I know. I was like, where is bell pepper in the recipe?
Harley
But, like, the.
David
The inside looks so overcooked. It's like.
Ethan
It does. It looks really bad. Well, she had to cook five separate ones or whatever.
David
So the black part is the mushrooms. Yes, it's the mushroom duxelle. Because even though I've never made it before.
Kate
Okay.
David
It's cooked. It's cooked down with, like, red wine. So it gets really dark.
Kate
Oh, okay. God, it looks like straight doo doo, but fried doo doo.
Harley
This.
Kate
Yeah, this is so the big. The big. Well, one of the big revelations is that it was 100% the death caps. That was not something that the jury was even deliberating on. They were not deliberating whether or not the. The people were poisoned. It was whether she chose to do it on purpose or if it was on accident. So they were like, no, don't even worry about the death caps. It definitely was the thing that killed them. It was in the. The Beef Wellington. That is not up for debate. Disgusting. Also, Aaron's children both testified via a police interview that they did off site that was recorded. I have a little clip here from. Not from the interview, but a reporter kind of summing it up. It's always more fun in an Australian accent in it. Okay.
Ethan
It's such a cute accent.
Kate
I know.
Reporter
Trial has heard from Aaron Patterson's little girl for the very first time. The mood completely.
Kate
She was nine years old when this, when this went down changed as the
Reporter
little girl's face was beamed into the courtroom. She was interviewed by police in a pre recorded interview. In the vision you can see the nine year old girl sat on a large archive sort of style room as she was being questioned by a police officer. She was wearing pink trainers and the seat was so big her feet didn't even touch the ground. She was crying at times.
David
Okay.
Reporter
And wiping her nose with a tissue. As soon as Erin Patterson heard her daughter's voice.
Kate
Right. She literally.
Ethan
Oh my God. Right, yeah.
Kate
Started to quiver peak Roseanne with the long black hair.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
Oh God, I loved that show the
Reporter
tissue to her face. She was obviously really upset. And to be honest, the whole mood in the courtroom completely changed. Aaron Patterson's daughter told police that mum had explained that she was having Don, Gail, Ian and Heather over for a lunch to talk about adult stuff and
Kate
that she had her fake cancer to
Reporter
go to the movies. She told the officer that her and her brother both had leftovers, but she couldn't remember exactly what she ate, only that there was some sort of meat, possibly a steak.
Kate
Now that's the part that is weird to me is that she let these kids eat some of what she fed the rest of her family. How even if it was like a separate cut of meat?
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
I would not give my children or anyone I didn't want dead like anything from my kitchen the very that like that night because there were probably spores everywhere. Why would you do that? Why would you let your kids eat it? At one point, one of the kids said that they like that she like scraped the mushrooms off because they don't like mushrooms. And then they just ate the meat. Why was she feeding it to her children? That is like another, another level really.
Reporter
Interestingly, the little girl, psychotic, but still
David
wouldn't eat it herself.
Kate
Right.
Reporter
Her mum had some different colored plates. She said there was some black and red ones and some white ones but she thought that was about it. So another emotional day here.
Kate
So. Yeah. So she confirms it was different kinds of plates and that the Kids, the kids ate some of it, which is so bizarre, so bizarre to me. But I guess we're not really ever going to understand these people. And then her son, who was 13, a bit older, gave his interview. He said his parents relationship was very negative, which is sad and saying that they had arguments and I mean it sounds like Aaron had been in his ear because he said, I know dad does a lot of things to try to hurt mom. Mom. Such as messing around with the school because like paying the school fees. Aaron's son, the son also recalled a walk during COVID Covid times when his mother stopped to take photos of mushrooms because they looked nice. He said his mother told him the meat they ate for dinner was reheated leftovers from the lunch. Why would you serve that to your children? And then also in the interview he said that he went upstairs around 5:30 on the day of the lunch and Aaron was just like playing legos upstairs. I guess she had like a Lego set that she played but she just had no concerns what for whatsoever that she had just poisoned her whole family.
David
I mean, listen, she got a new set. You gotta crack that open.
Kate
That don't wait for anybody. No, I mean the job was done, you know, the job was done her lego time.
David
We all do.
Kate
We all do. And then he also said that his mom had had Don and Gail over. That was his grandparents, right? But he had never, she had never invited Ian and Heather. He's like extended family members over to the house. So that was very weird.
David
That was the first time that they were invited over essentially ever that they'd
Kate
ever been to the house, that they'd
David
ever been to the house for a lunch. Beef Wellington. I know the red flags are everywhere,
Kate
but David, she had fake cancer, right? It was really.
David
She's probably sick and tired, so what does she do? Make five individual beef Wellingtons.
Kate
Got some full of fucking poison mushrooms. God, what a loon. What? Alone? Okay. So then Simon, her estranged husband, takes the stand. And again there were no cameras. But we got a little update from a reporter on this.
Reporter
Married to an accused murderer, Simon Patterson, stand to testify in his estranged wife's trial. Choking back tears, he recounted visiting his hospital the day after they were allegedly poisoned by Erin Patterson. Dad was substantially worse than mum. He was really struggling. He was lying on his side, he was hunched quite noticeably. Face taking the energy to speak was an effort. His voice was strained. He wasn't right inside. The prosecution claims Ms. Patterson pretended she'd been diagnosed with cancer to lure her relatives to her home in July 2023. There it's alleged she served up a beef Wellington dish deliberately secretly laced with death cap mushrooms. Simon's parents, Don and Gail Patterson and his aunt and uncle Heather and Ian Wilkinson fell violently ill within hours. The jury as he drove the Wilkinsons to hospital, Heather questioned why the guests meals had been served on different plates to errands.
Kate
They already on the way to the hospital were like why did she give us different plates? They already knew.
Reporter
She mentioned the colored plate again.
Kate
Wait, was that Ian walking in?
Reporter
I think it was the Wilkinsons to hospital. Heather questioned why the guests yeah, that's Ian there. Served on different poor guys.
Ethan
Yeah.
Reporter
She mentioned the colored plate again. She asked me is Aaron short of crockery? Is there a reason she would have this different kind of plate?
Kate
So they yeah, they already knew as they were going to the hospital.
Reporter
Addison told the court he was meant to attend the lunch, but sent Ms. Patterson a text message the night before before telling her he wouldn't be there.
Ethan
It's so crazy to be like say someone's short of crockery dead ass. Seriously, in a sentence like it's crockery short of crockery.
Kate
Are you short of crockery or something? That sounds like you're calling someone nuts, which I kind of like that. That bird's really short of a bit of crockery over there too uncomfortable about
Reporter
coming to the lunch with you Mom, Dad, Heather and Ian tomorrow, but I'm happy to to talk about your health and the implications of that another time. She replied minutes later. That's really disappointing. I've spent many hours preparing lunch for tomorrow and spent a small fortune on beef Wellingtons because I wanted it to be a special meal.
Kate
Oh God. And the guilt.
Reporter
I may not be able to host a lunch like this for some time. I hope you'll change your mind.
Kate
What with the ovarian cancer, I don't know.
Reporter
After the lunch, Ms. Pattison feigned illness, disposed of a food dehydrator and lied to police. She has admitted to foraging for mushrooms but insists she never sought out death caps and maintains her relatives deaths were a tragic accident. The jury heard her children were also admitted to Simon Patterson choked back tears at court how he tried Ms. Patterson for the sake of their children after the pair separated in 2015. At one stage, as he struggled to compose the himself Justice Christopher Beale asked if he needed a break. The court heard the pair bonded while they both worked at Monash City Council
Kate
in the yeah yeah, yeah.
Reporter
Her intelligence Erin as an RSPCA rep and Simon as a civil engineer. Aaron's very intelligent. Some of the things that attracted me to her in the first place was her intelligence. She's quite witty and can be quite funny.
Kate
He told the jury she's also a great actress.
Reporter
Would reconcile their relationship. One now firmly in the spotlight. Samantha.
Kate
So, yeah, there's that.
Ethan
He.
Kate
Yeah, he was very upset talking about his parents as. I mean, who wouldn't be? And then we have more. It's doing it again. More evidence here, I'll share this tab. There we go. And then Ian, the sole survivor, does his testimony. So May 6, this is like, what, like a week or so after the trial started? Ian Wilkinson takes the stand. He has spent almost two months. He spent almost two months recovering in the hospital and lost his wife Heather, and his in laws, Gail and Don. So at this point, he's 71 years old. And he told the courtroom that he was very happy to be invited to the lunch set up by Aaron and that Patterson, that Aaron is the one who plated all the food. Aaron's first statements to the cops were that everyone was able to just take whatever they wanted. And then she took her own plate. We all know is fucking bullshit. And she appeared reluctant for her house guests to go into her pantry. I imagine that's where the dehydrator and the scale was. He confirmed again that they all ate from the four gray plates and Patterson ate from an orangey tan plate. He said that his wife told him the next day that she also noticed the difference in colors of plates. So they were talking about the crockery, like, all night.
Ethan
Big deal over there.
Kate
Yeah, crockery.
Ethan
I guess they got a word for it.
Kate
Yeah, it's like a recession indicator or something. I love calling plates crockery. Instead of what? What, like flatware. Crockery is like, way better.
Ethan
Yeah, yeah.
Kate
Wilkinson. China. Fine china. David,
David
Did you call me?
Kate
You rang? All right, we gotta get David a gong behind him.
David
All right, that's enough.
Kate
That'd be sick. Don't lie. Skunks are sick. I don't know how it would sound on the mic. Guns are sick. All right. Anyway, Wilkinson noted that following the lunch is when Aaron decided to tell them about her cancer. So she poisons them and then makes them sit there and listen to her fake cancer story. And she said that she was very concerned because she believed it was very serious and life threatening. This is what Ian said on the stand. He said she was anxious about telling the kids. She was asking our advice. Should I tell the kids or not tell the kids about this threat to my life. So she was really milking it after already poisoning them. She made them also sit through this like they hadn't suffered enough. Wilkinson said the doctors first treated him for food poisoning. All of them for food poisoning. And they thought maybe it was the beef that got them all sick. But at the. That first day, they did not really hear any mention of the mushrooms. And then the next morning, it became clear that they were really, really sick. And it was not just food poisoning.
Ethan
Boomers are scared of beef. You ever notice that?
Kate
Well, remember mad cow disease?
Ethan
Yeah. That's probably why that. I think there was a. Like a Nightline episode, you guys remember, about beef not cooked.
Kate
David.
Ethan
He's not cooked properly.
Kate
David, you remember Fortnite season three Cocomelon yourself.
David
And you do, too.
Kate
Child's child.
David
And you remember mad cow disease.
Kate
Yeah, Hell yeah, I do. Didn't that start in England? I think that was an England thing. Really sad. At one point, Ian said, oh, this is during his. His victim impact statement. But I wanted to say it here. He said that he only feels half alive without his wife.
Ethan
That's very sad. And he's been through so much with it. Friends, like, how do you go back home to your empty home after that?
Kate
Yeah. Your best friends.
Ethan
Gotta get it.
Kate
Gotta get, like, eight dogs.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
It's dog time. Just fill the house.
Harley
Oh.
Ethan
Each one dumber than the last.
Kate
Just dummy dumb and ugly dogs. That's what you need. A whole bed full of them.
Ethan
All of them have Shambhala eyes.
David
Yeah.
Kate
And they're all of wheels for their back legs. It's like the whole thing. All of them. All of them have something going on. And he said, my life is greatly impoverished without them. And then in the end, he said, I'm distressed that Aaron has acted with callous and calculated disregard for my life and the lives of those I love. What foolishness possesses a person to think that murder could be the solution to their problems? Especially the murder of people who have only good intentions towards her, which, I mean. Yeah. How can you make sense of her killing your wife and trying to kill you when you, like, just tangentially knew her? They were your nephew. It's your nephew's wife. Why would she kill. Why would she try to kill you?
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
Unfathomable, as she would say. Okay. And then Aaron takes the stand. She is the sole witness for the defense. So they weren't even trying to. Things were so locked up, there was, like, no point in trying to discredit anything that the prosecution was saying. So Aaron takes the stand in her own defense. And so here are some of the highlights from that. First of all, legit court reporter nailed it. And there are more photos. I'll show you of her different photo, her different sketchings throughout the trial. So first of all, she admits on the stand that the cancer scare was faked. What she. And this is. I don't know if this is true. The prosecution thinks she just made it up and she thought she'd never have to deal with, like, the consequences because they were all going to be dead. But what she said on the stand is that actually in September, she was going to get gastric bypass surgery, and she was embarrassed about that. And so she was just gonna say that she got cancer surgery and. And get help from people because she wouldn't be able to move around as much as she was healing, but would tell them that she had survived cancer because that was just like a. A more noble thing, like a more noble kind of surgery to undergo. So she was going to do stolen cancer. Valor about getting bariatric surgery. Trash. Let me see if I missed anything else here. No, that's it. She was just very.
David
Someone said butthole eyes.
Kate
I see it. I see it.
Ethan
You can tell she's fake crying, even from this picture.
Kate
Oh, 100. And that's her face. Like, the whole trial. The whole trial. Deadly mushrooms are confirmed. We. We knew that Patterson told doctors, or in the immediate aftermath, Aaron told doctors that she used two kinds of mushrooms from her D for her dish, fresh from the grocery store and dried from a Chinese grocer in the area, although she didn't know which one. But then on the stand, her tune.
David
Never used mushrooms for beef Wellington, by the way.
Kate
Yeah. Why. Why would you do that? That's stupid. Then she. Or so on the stand, she confirmed that she had lied. She confirmed that she had not bought the mushrooms, that she had foraged them, but that she did not deliberately seek out death cap mushrooms. Now, for me, if I forage instead of buying something, I'm probably excited about it and would tell my family that that's how I got the mushrooms. You know what I mean?
Ethan
After they ate it. Especially, by the way, I found that outside the movie theater.
Kate
Yeah, exactly. Where all the dogs go pee pee.
David
This is the first time she's foraged and the first time she's invited these people over to her house.
Kate
I'm not eating. I'm not eating.
Harley
Wow.
Ethan
First time foraging. First time having dinner guests. Kill them all. Major L. Yeah. What the stay in your lane.
Kate
What a terrible hoax. Ghost you it up. Okay, so she didn't seek them out. She started foraging for mushrooms at trails and botanical gardens in her area during COVID and joined Facebook groups to identify and learn about the different kinds. I didn't hear anything about that. I just knew about the true crime groups. And then she said she did. She bought a dehydrator in April 2023. So only a couple months before this all happened. But she denies that she traveled to a nearby town to collect the death cap mushrooms.
Ethan
You know, she was getting rid of that dehydrated. She's like, I should have used this thing more.
Kate
Yeah. She's like, damn. Thinking all the.
Ethan
All the figs before I compromised it, contaminated it with poison.
David
I should have used graduation goggles.
Kate
Yeah. She's like, it's almost. Oh, my God. Was that how I met your mother? Reference graduation goggles.
David
I mean, I think I heard it from there, but it's not. I don't know if it's. Is it just from there?
Kate
I think so.
Ethan
I've never heard of it before.
Kate
I know. Okay. And then she says, I didn't deliberately. Deliberately put death cap mushrooms in the meal, she said. But she acknowledged now there's definitely a chance that some of her foraged mushrooms were also in the Tupperware with, like, the Chinese mushrooms. What? It doesn't make any sense. You did it on purpose.
David
How many times are you going to change your story?
Kate
Yeah, like what? All right, so now she admits to. All right, she admits to lying and hiding evidence.
Ethan
What.
Kate
Why are there two things here
David
Cooked. Already cooked.
Kate
So. So this is. This is what I was talking about before. When. Even when the. When the family members were in the hospital clearly dying, she did nothing to help the investigation. She did not tell any medical people that they had eaten her mushrooms again because she was just scared. She had panicked and just decided to let these people die from an accident. Now I. Like, I was at my sister's house. She has a very big dog. The dog ate a single little piece of a diced onion. And I immediately called my sister. I was like, the dog ate a little piece of onion. I'm scared. Like, if you do something and you think maybe you up and you're actually innocent, you tell people, obviously that was not enough to even make him sick at all. But you overcorrect when you think you've made a mistake. And her whole excuse was that she just was scared and panicked and just decided to keep lying. Just kept lying, lied about the dehydrator, lied about her phone, lied about the mushrooms just because she was scared and panicked about something she didn't do. She also admitted to being pissed at his family members. She said that she did write stuff to his. To her friends about it. And she said, I thought his parents would want him to do the right thing, but it seems that they're concerned about not wanting to feel uncomfortable and not wanting to get involved in their son's personal matters are overriding that, so fuck them. It's one of the things she said. And then lastly, she. She challenged Ian Wilkinson Wilkinson's testimony about the different colored plates. She maintains that everyone was allowed to pick their own food, and they all ate on different colored plates, which we know was. I'm believing the guy who got poisoned. Okay, so here are the amazing courtroom sketches that went viral again. I think, because there were no. No cameras allowed, that they really. They really took off. And so these are all done by an artist named Anita Lester. Sounds like there could be a joke in there, but isn't Anita Handgun? Yeah, Anita. Anita Lester is her name.
Ethan
What's her. What's her middle name? Mo Muhammad.
Kate
Good one. Both of us. Good job. Mohamed Lester. All right, so I think this is the one she started with. And she said that she, like, focused too much on making it accurate. And then she really got into the groove of giving her that face. And I love the color, the detail.
David
And we actually have the bottom right one. She's, like, melting.
Kate
Yeah, it's wild, right? And this one in the middle is so cool. They have her talking about it. So here she is, artist, and this is my drawing. I was very lucky. They gave me front and center seat, so I had a great view of Erin, and I watched her speak for about 20 minutes, which meant that I had realistically, about 10 minutes to draw her. I made a decision not to put in her microphone, actually. And the background, I just wanted to focus on.
Ethan
On her.
Kate
She was crazy this day in court. She looked so cured the whole time. And I was thinking, ah, do I. Do I give her the frown that I am seeing? And I kind of concluded that, yes, that was the right thing to do. And you don't cheat the details. That's. That's sort of like what I think. You have to be as honest as you can. I don't think many people would, like, clock that. It's digital art. That's good. Yeah, I do quite. She did it on her iPad. I recently did Tony Mockbell's case Perry Karamb look at this, guys. So I initially got called the first day Erin appeared in court. She walked out for two minutes. I had to draw her. Erin did look at me in that initial trial quite a bit. Of course, she's like, what's this bitch drawn? What does it look like? Prior to the frenetic energy around the case, someone said to me there hadn't been so much media attention since the dingo baby. Dingo ate my baby. So. Yeah. So that's Anita. Shout out to her. Beautiful art. We love it.
Ethan
Yeah. No disrespect.
Kate
What?
Ethan
What do you think?
Kate
I fucking hate you. You're such a fucking bitch. That's so cool. I can't wait to find someone ugly to compare you to.
Reporter
You.
Kate
It's a goof.
Ethan
I nailed it, though. I know.
Kate
You absolutely nailed it. That is so good. Oh, my God.
Ethan
If I see some white woman with glasses on sitting in front of a microphone, obviously I'm a think of my girl.
Kate
Oh, yeah, of course, of course. Roasted. Roasted. I. I have to say, I already had the idea back in the day to be here for Halloween, so it's fine. I already know. I already know. But I did.
Ethan
Then I'm going. No, it's too mean. Never mind.
Kate
Okay, cool. Text it to me.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
Is it mean to me?
Ethan
No, no, no, it's mean. It would be. It would be. Our haters would be feasting.
Harley
Stop.
David
While you're ahead.
Kate
Just text me. Text me about it. Okay, Next up is. Okay, so after nearly two years of this whole thing going on and 10 weeks of testimony and evidence and closing arguments, six and a half days of jury deliberation, the verdict came down on July 7, 2025. Just about two. Yeah, just almost two years since everything started. Look how much older she looks in just two years.
Ethan
Crazy, right? Crazy.
Kate
Does that look like me too?
Ethan
No. No.
Kate
Okay, so the verdict is straight.
Ethan
You from the future.
Kate
That's straight me. That's straight murderer me. She's straight murdering people. Guilty. Guilty on all counts.
Harley
Yeah.
Kate
What's the.
Ethan
Dude, she gets sentenced.
Kate
Oh, yeah. Super, super, super guilty on three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder for Ian, she is now serving three life sentences plus 25 years and all of those are being served concurrently, which means at the same time. So she will be eligible for parole. I don't know why. In 2056. And we got comments from Ian after the sentencing where he gave his impact statement and all that
Harley
today is to give some well earned thanks firstly to Victoria Police.
Kate
We love that you thank people, but
Harley
they brought to light the truth of what happened with the dish.
Kate
All right.
Harley
Into what happened at the lunch. They brought to light the truth of what happened with the death of three good people.
Kate
So sad.
David
We're grateful for their skills.
Kate
I believe he is the pastor at the church they all went to.
Ethan
Ah, that's really crazy.
Harley
Truth delight. And I'm also very grateful for the kindness and compassion they showed us, me and my family, throughout the long process that has brought us to this day.
David
They've done a wonderful job.
Harley
I'd like to extend gratitude, too, to
David
the team from the office of the Office of Public Prosecutions, led by.
Kate
We're doing thank yous.
Harley
Their hard work. Do us wonderful job.
David
We're also grateful.
Kate
Okay. We're thanking. We're thanking.
Harley
There are so many services and agencies and people involved. Accept my sincere gratitude for the path that you have played in this process. We're thankful that when things go wrong, there are good people and services and systems available to help us recover. I'd like to encourage all those involved to keep turning up and serving others.
Kate
Oh, yeah, he's a pastor.
Harley
And the life of our community depends on the kindness of others. I'd like to encourage everybody to be kind to each other.
Ethan
Crazy. Surviving an assault, assassination attempt.
Kate
Yeah. And then just being like, be kind to each other.
Harley
I want to say thank you to the many people from across Australia and around the world.
Ethan
You're welcome.
Harley
Thank you.
David
Through their prayers and messages of support,
Kate
having us, we did it.
Harley
I thank the people of the Leangapa and Karamburra community in particular. Your thoughtfulness and care has been a great encouragement to us. That's all I wish to say for now. Please respect our privacy as we continue
Kate
to grieve and heal. Thank you for listening.
Harley
I hope you all have a great day.
Kate
This poor, sweet man. So sad.
Ethan
Especially just to like, go so late in your life and have the most up thing happen, like, like on the last leg. Basically, it's just so up, so up.
Kate
They probably just like a sweet little life together.
Ethan
Not how you imagine it ending. You know what I mean?
Harley
No.
Kate
You think you'll just die in your sleep at the same time as you love them, tell your homies you love them, and if some wacko invites you over out of nowhere with a very fancy meal, just don't do it. That is what we've learned from this. Oh, this poor guy. Thanks, David. So there's the. There's the mural. She got a mural in Melbourne. It didn't always say guilty. They spray Painted that on after the verdict. But her face really did take over, take over Australia for a while. So this month there will be appeals from Aaron's side. Her lawyers have officially submitted to appeal the guilty verdict. And the hearings are going to take place in about two weeks on August 19th and 20th. And Aaron's grounds for appeal include that there was a fundamental irregularity while the jury was sequestered. Who knows what that could be? But jury stuff does tend.
Ethan
It's just like literally talking to one person can change it all.
Kate
Yeah, yeah. Which is what happened with.
Ethan
It doesn't matter.
Kate
Even if she goes back, the Murdoch
Ethan
case, even if she goes back, she's so. Murdoch.
Kate
What? Murdoch? Yeah. Oh, yeah. She'll.
Ethan
They have too much on her.
Kate
Yeah. The same is true, I think with a Murdoch case. Like, pick another jury, do it again. It's going to come to the same conclusion and maybe even worse because now there's probably new evidence that they'll be able to talk about. And she also said various pieces of evidence introduced were either irrelevant or unfairly prejudicial. Like messages from Facebook friends and the cell tower location data that could have been like inaccurate. And so in general, she also says that she was subjected to an unfair and oppressive cross examination. So those are the grounds. Unclear. If she's going to actually get a mistrial or a dismissal or whatever they are going for.
Ethan
She should get dismissal. Or that missile.
Kate
Boom.
Ethan
You know what I mean?
Kate
Yeah. Right in the fucking.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
Face. Yeah, Right in the face. Oh, I just wanted to end with this because I looked it up because I was curious because, like, do women poison more? Because I know historically poison has been.
Ethan
I only know it from fiction or video games or they're like poison a woman's weapon.
Kate
They say that.
Ethan
Yeah, I've heard it before.
Kate
Interesting. Well, I looked it up because I had heard stuff like that too. Like women use poison. Like that's like the, the most popular way that female killers kill people. But it turns out both genders use firearms the most. And this comes from. And wall of guns. Wall of guns. Now this is, this is an FBI report. So it might not be the same in Australia, but at least in the U.S. the FBI reported who.
Ethan
That little idiot.
Kate
No, this is way before him. This is way before him. This is from 1999 to 2012. They did the survey. It's not the little googly eyed guy who did it. All right, so both genders prefer firearms, by and large, like the most. But pretty women. Yeah, women tend to use them at a Lower frequency. It's still the. It's still the top. But there are others that are closer to it than men, and they often opt for more passive forms of homicide like poisoning, fire, and asphyxiation. And criminologists say that this doesn't mean women are less violent. It just means often they're overcoming, like a height difference, a power difference, things like that.
Ethan
Women with me be overcoming.
Kate
You didn't even know about the rose. You didn't know about the importance of suction.
Ethan
I'm gonna straight, dude. Sorry. I'm straight.
Kate
See your credentials.
Ethan
Sorry, my bad. I'm straight.
Kate
Oh, my God. And it says motives for female killers differ from men, too. Now, this is specifically serial killers, but specifically men are usually driven by sexual lust or a need for control, while women tend to kill for financial gain more than anything, followed by revenge and sometimes even a delusional sense that they are being good caregivers by doing it. Like mercy killing, things like that. Or poisoning their loved ones to get attention. So, yeah, that's pretty cool, right?
Ethan
Poisoning your loved one for attention? No, getting your loved one something from Belessa. Bbvibes.com After Dark.
Kate
Yes, we have this on the screen. Put this away, David.
Ethan
David, put your mushroom away, sicko.
Kate
David, put your big mushroom away. Thank you. Make sure you.
Ethan
David, let me bounce on that mushroom,
Kate
all right? We're not going to talk about the sponsor. Yeah, let me bounce on your morale. Which doesn't look like a penis according to them.
Ethan
According to the penis having folk.
Kate
According to these hoes. Okay, well, that's. I mean, it's almost four or three hours. We're over three hours now.
David
Yep.
Kate
We're good. Okay.
Ethan
He left. As soon as he left, we were allowed to go. That's the rule. If the teacher leaves 15 minutes after the teacher leaves, you're allowed to leave.
Kate
I did.
David
Left her milk and never came back.
Kate
I wanted to do a little palate cleanser because I promised we would do that at the end of these episodes. And so we'll do just a sweet little goof and gaff table. It just a.
Reporter
No.
Kate
Just a little taste. Just a little bit.
Ethan
You think tablet only works on David?
Kate
It does usually work on me, but I know people really want a palette cleanser at the end of True.
Ethan
Yeah. Let's clean this palette it.
Kate
Let's click. Let's clean it up. We got too many poison mushrooms on it. All right. The only thing I wanted to show. Oh, where did it go?
David
The only thing she wanted to show was not my Instagram reels that I've been waiting.
Kate
Shut up. Table.
David
Yep, they've been tabled.
Kate
No, David, they're not table. They're floored.
David
They're on the floor.
Kate
We. We are gonna start with basement. Hang on. I'm totally gonna find it. Oh, here it is. Here it is. Okay. Have you seen these chubby little cousins fighting on Instagram? They have taken over the Asian ones. Yes, yes. In Vietnam at first.
Ethan
And I. It's funny because I switched sides a lot at first. I was like, what the hell? How you got that kid? Then I was like, oh, he's with him.
Kate
Eh, dude, they're so cute and funny. All right, so there's tons of these. I'm just gonna pull a couple that are, like, my favorites. But you guys gotta go follow. There's that one. There's the beefing one. We'll do that. I'm gonna do three. All right, we'll do three of these, and then I'll do the most recent one, which is like. Okay.
David
Someone said it's the real pit now.
Kate
Real pit. Okay, so basically this couple and their kid go to Vietnam. I think the woman's family is from there, obviously, because her family is living there and her. Her son is the same age, about as this. As this cousin here. And so they spend the entire time. They don't speak each other's languages very well. They just spend the entire time just beefing with each other. This is the Vietnamese cousin.
Reporter
The freak out of you until you
Kate
stop going in and out. I'm going to slap the freak out of you. He said, shut up. She said, try to.
Ethan
Try to study English. I love that. She's like, this is a learning opportunity. I hope you're working right now.
Kate
Rs screaming at you. Get out now. I'm not lying.
Harley
Get out.
Kate
He's just totally rage baiting him.
Ethan
See this shirt? The shirt is, like, accidentally sick. Just as, like, strength and there's a number on it. He's number eight on strength.
Kate
On strength time. Here we go. And they're both just so chubby.
Ethan
They, like, literally look like family.
Kate
Yes. Don't be physical.
Ethan
Sick.
Harley
Move.
Kate
And that.
Ethan
That's when I was like, oh, your disturbing. He goes over to mom and he's still looking at him. Yeah, I know, I know this.
Kate
And that baby is treasured by his mama. How come Eli is sick but is cussing so much? The medicine got him feeling better immediately. Huh? He said so much.
Ethan
He said he was sick because he just was done with his cousin and he Wanted to go to bed, so he said he's sick. It wasn't really sick. Sick, though.
David
Yeah.
Kate
What are you looking at, bro? Like, what are you looking at? Stop.
Ethan
He's literally 8 and sounds like he's in Face Clan, right? What are you looking at, bro? Bro, what are you looking at? Dude, step up then do something. Do something then, dude, do something. I'm right here.
Kate
Get froggy. Jump.
Ethan
He w. He watches kick. I could tell.
Kate
Oh, for sure. All right, here's another one of them being physical. This is the last fight, they say, cuz they're leaving soon.
Ethan
Hey, he got his hair colored.
Kate
I know. They did go. They did go to the salon. Salon together. You can go check that out. And the name is Bun Bay Hui on Instagram. Dozen. There are dozens of these guys. You gotta go check them out. They were there for a few weeks.
Ethan
He voted on him.
Kate
Yep.
Ethan
He barely made that jump.
Kate
Oh, oh, oh.
Ethan
Who is this?
Kate
One day, bro.
Reporter
One day.
Ethan
Who is this loose standing here?
Kate
Oh, that's. That's his. I think his stepdad.
Harley
Right?
Kate
This ugly guy who looks just like me, Scaring him.
Ethan
Love that. I love that mural behind the tv.
Kate
I know. So pretty. I feel like it's nice and cool in this room.
Ethan
It looks like if I was in this room, I would instantly be like, we are in a different country.
Kate
Oh, 100%. I love that.
Ethan
I didn't even have to look at the outlet to know this.
Kate
No. And there's not like, really? Windows. He's like, what's wrong? I'm good. He's such a little cartoon character. It's like, yeah, I'm good.
Ethan
Okay.
Kate
All right. These little. These little pork rolls. I love them. All right. This is so cute.
Ethan
I love how you're just commenting on all of them.
Kate
Oh, yes. I love every single one. This is. Okay. So the Vietnamese cousin is sending home a gift of his portrait to go home so they can hang it up in the house. And he wrote his name on the back. Look at this thing.
Ethan
Hey, that's. I want one of those.
Kate
Right? Oh, this is probably going to be.
Harley
Look,
Kate
they're so happy now. Oh, he's gonna miss him. And he thinks his name is Hila. His name is Eli. Hila. Look at him. We gotta see the portrait.
Ethan
He watches age three.
Kate
Yeah. Shout out family hero. Everyone's names down. And now he can take it back home. Oh, my God, he's so cute. Look, he drew them. I can't so. Oh, little chubbers hugging. My God, they're so cute. Look at this. Look how cute. Little businessman. I love it so much. Look at him. All right, and then here's the last one. This is them getting on the plane to go home. Oh, there's music on this one, too. Look at them. They're both crying.
Harley
Yeah.
Kate
Sweet boys, look, there's me again. You better get that little meatball over to the U.S. look at the babies crying and so sweet. What?
David
Roasting the kids in the comments.
Kate
They're so cute. Oh, my God, I love them so much. So, yeah, Bun Bay Hui. And they just did a ton of content. Here's them at the salon. I'll let you guys check out the rest of it. But yeah, they were there for a good while and had a lot of fun together. And it's just so, so cute. So check them out. And that's. That's the true twos palette cleanser, guys
Ethan
I saw. Yeah, we had the palate cleanse from family annihilation. So we showed you family just fighting. Yeah, Relatives fighting.
Kate
That's how. That's how to fight healthily, not poisoning each other. Shout out, David, over to you.
David
Let's see where. Where was I at here?
Kate
Up your butt.
Ethan
In your ass, David. In your ass.
Kate
In your butt.
David
Thank you.
Kate
Oh, my God. Wait, wait, wait. I. You know that the video that I was going to show, but it got yellowed.
David
Yeah.
Kate
The girl that, like, talks in the games.
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
I opened it the other day or today or yesterday, and she said the first thing she says on this reel is, open up your butt. And then goes,
David
Hell, yeah.
Kate
I couldn't believe it. Oh, it was so funny. Anyways, she rules. I wish we could show all of her content on here.
Ethan
That is good.
Kate
Open your butt is crazy.
David
That's insane.
Ethan
After is what takes it to the next level.
Kate
I know. It's like, Jesus Christ. I feel assaulted by that.
David
Ridge Reconnick said my first time doing shrooms was by myself. Plus, I only intended to microdose, but I got lost somewhere between beginners euphoria and God mode. So I ended up having a full trip all by myself. That sounds terrifying.
Ethan
Yeah, I've done it before. You mean to just basically did your toe in and you fall all the
Kate
way in, just like.
David
Yeah.
Kate
Hope you're okay now.
Ethan
He's probably better. He probably had numerous creative abilities, epiphanies.
Kate
Hope so. And it wasn't just him watching himself from behind.
David
Yeah, that's different. Experience. Sexy koala ju said, Kate, by the way, if someone moves to Perth, 99% of the time, it's because they got a job in mining doing fifo. Shout out, Perth.
Kate
The is fifo.
Ethan
He's a Jewish mouse. That.
Kate
That's fox. Was he Jewish?
Ethan
I don't know. He left the Nazis and came to America.
Kate
Was it?
Ethan
Yeah, I think he was a Russian Jew.
Kate
Russian Jew. Well, Ashkenazi.
Ethan
Okay. Yeah.
Harley
All right.
Kate
Okay, thank you for that. The pith update.
David
Shut up. Shout out. Pith.
Kate
Shut up. Pith.
David
Necro Canute said my non profit was burglarized last month. Can you get a true Crime Tuesday about petty things, theft?
Kate
O yeah, I definitely. I definitely want to do crimes that don't involve like dead families. Dead families all the time. You know, I do. Obviously I find female killers very interesting because it's pretty rare. But yeah, I definitely want to mix or something. Ooh, fun. Yeah, there's a good one. Yeah, that sounds fun. The best are the ones that have like video. That's what I'm looking for is like stuff that has like actual interactive content that's fun to react to or interesting to react.
David
Something about it is like a little funny. So it's not just sad all the time.
Kate
Just dead children. Yeah. Yeah.
David
H3 prime minutes. It's still thinking about David's desk being the size of a TV dinner, bruh.
Kate
I want them to just keep giving you different stupid shit as your desk. I think that'd be very funny. But then the computer might fall over.
Ethan
So like sitting on a ball tomorrow.
David
Yeah. Oh, and that is not the desk I switch from, by the way, where Nate and I switch at the same desk. That's just my temporary desk to work on this show while we're not live. It would be very funny if that was the desk that I switched the show on though. But it's not. Brian Wolfbert said, does David read membership milestones? I'm taking this opportunity to once again ask for a head DND miniseries. I normally don't, but I did for you.
Ethan
Good call, Good call, Good call.
Kate
I do want to do dnd.
Harley
Yeah.
David
Yeah.
Ethan
Let me see if I can get. If I find a person that's in Los Angeles that could Dungeon Master for us or something.
Kate
Oh, when we go there. That would be fun.
Ethan
No, we don't even have to be there. They could just go in and Dungeon Master when we do it, sit on David's lap or something.
Kate
Oh, okay.
David
Share my desk with me.
Kate
Open,
Harley
bruh.
Ethan
Okay.
Reporter
Nothing.
David
She said open his butt. Referring to.
Kate
Oh my God.
David
Open my boat.
Ethan
Get that hole dilated.
David
Yeah, get that gaped the gate, dude.
Ethan
You're gonna get gate.
Kate
Don't keep doing it. Let's just go.
David
Yeah, I'll gape for your dm. Robin with a Y, said David, don't forget today's goose and gaffs were promised to you on Friday if you wanted anyway. Yeah, they were, but, you know, here we are.
Ethan
Table that.
Kate
No, I said Wednesday for his goose and gas.
David
Yeah, you said Monday, which is no.
Ethan
And I said. I'm pretty sure I was there saying. And I'm pushing. I'm pretty sure I was there saying, no promises. We can't promise anything.
Kate
I think we're gonna watch them on March 32nd.
Ethan
I did say. I did say, can't promise.
David
Well, hey, Marleno, said David, create a folder of reels and share it with the. The fam on Discord or something. We'll watch him and appreciate him. Maybe that's what we'll have to do to get it to you.
Ethan
No, no, no, no, no. We don't. We don't take content from the show and just put it loosely elsewhere.
Kate
No loose. No loose.
Ethan
No loose.
Harley
David.
Ethan
Only ass.
Kate
No.
David
Victoria asked and said, but, David, why don't you read the membership milestones? You know, sometimes I just. They pass by and I. I miss them, but I'll start reading them more, I promise. Don't promise.
Kate
Miss them.
David
Okay, I won't.
Kate
Cool.
Harley
Did you.
David
Let's see. Joey Ravioli said, hi. Could you guys cover the case of Tomla Horsford and Kenica Jenkins? Both cases have left so many unanswered questions. I'd love to see your take on it. Thanks for everything you do.
Kate
I don't know those cases. I'll look into it. Thank you.
David
There you go. Shout out Jared Kan for five podcast gift memberships.
Kate
Thank you. Thank you.
David
Too thick to quit, said David. I'm going to need you to hear you denounce North Korea and its dictator. I denounce North Korea and its dictator.
Kate
Thank you.
David
Not afraid to say it.
Kate
Shout out.
Ethan
So you love USA and it's President, though.
Kate
Keep going. Yeah.
David
Henny Moore said, what's the crime? Cooking a meal, a succulent British meal
Kate
literally is. That's literally the crime. It's true.
David
Spikes Johnson said, could you do an episode of Ryan Wedding. The former Canadian snowboarder turned drug lord. That sounds.
Ethan
Whoa.
Kate
That sounds cool. You write that down. Ryan Wedding. And it's a mer. It's a break from murder, which we like.
Ethan
No, he murdered people, too. He's tied to bodies.
Kate
Is he?
Ethan
Yeah.
Kate
God damn it. Okay, But I Will. Yeah, let me. Let me add it to the list here. All right, cool. Thank you. Shout out, Ryan.
David
And shout out your mom. 3K who says, I'm 45 years old today. Shout out.
Ethan
Happy Birthday.
David
And they said, kate, are you following professional women's baseball? They're playing in my town and I got to see multiple games in person. Platonic kisses to my H3 fam.
Kate
Yeah. A little bit on Instagram. They're all in one place this summer, right? I think everybody's in the same place, so, yeah, following online for sure. Also, women's soccer is happening, and Boston just got a team this year, so there's a lot of women's sports happening right now.
David
Shout out.
Kate
This happen.
Harley
Yeah.
David
Aaron Del Carlo said, and FYI for Ethan, there was an active shooter last night at the boardwalk in Santa Cruz. No one was killed or injured, but the area might be weird this weekend.
Kate
In Santa Cruz, they said, yeah. Damn that. That's horrible.
David
Yeah, I'm glad no one was injured.
Kate
I feel like I haven't heard about a shooting recently. And then all of a sudden, they, like, there were multiple this weekend. Crazy.
David
Yep. Sucks. Shout out. Tough pup. Sending five podcast gift memberships. Thank you.
Kate
Thank you.
Ethan
Shout out.
Harley
Shout out.
Kate
Thank you.
David
Meg H. Said, maybe not a case to do here, but you should really look into Lucy Letby if you haven't already. More and more coming out. That is a huge miscarriage of justice and hopefully she'll be exonerated.
Kate
Oh, Lucy Letby. Interesting. Okay, I'll look into this. Jesus Christ.
David
What?
Kate
I don't know if we're gonna talk about that. There's a lot of dead children in that one. Oh, I just don't. I. Yeah, I don't want to do that.
David
Maybe not.
Kate
But I hope if she. If she is innocent, I hope she's exonerated.
David
Shout out.
Kate
Maybe not clap just in case we don't know. You know what I mean?
David
You're right.
Kate
Perfect. Yeah.
David
Finally. Shout out. Sriracha M. Good. Who said, I live next to multiple Asian supermarkets. They are my fave and never sold me deathly poison mushrooms. Shout out. Asian supermarkets. Usually all the produce there is way cheaper.
Kate
Way cheaper. More delicious.
David
They have so many more cuts of meat that you're not normally getting in a normal grocery store. And they're the best. Shut up.
Ethan
Yep.
Kate
I want to go and get the pho broth starter. They have it, like, all in a thing together so I can make pho at home because it's my favorite and there isn't a place around here, but. Yeah. So shout out.
Ethan
Whoa, whoa.
Kate
Oh, and there's one. There's one that I went to in Quincy, Mass. Which has, like a very large Asian population. And the grocery store itself had a dumpling stand in it and that was very delicious. All kinds of soup, dumplings. And, like, the sticky rice in the banana. Is it the banana leaves or the lotus leaves?
Ethan
Is it a TNT the place? Do you have tnt?
Kate
No, I don't think I. I don't know. But it was just like a. I don't think it was a chain. It wasn't a big one. Anyway, thank you, everybody.
Ethan
Next time you go get a pineapple bun. You ever have that pineapple bunk? Just literally looks just like a bun with yellow on top of it.
Kate
And it's good.
Ethan
It's sick. There's also coconut ones with coconut inside.
Kate
I love a bun.
Ethan
Yeah. Oh, these are. These are so good.
Kate
Now I want dim sum this weekend. Anyway, thank you everybody for being here. Harley, David, So good to see you guys.
Ethan
Thank you, Kate. Another banger, dude. Way to go.
Kate
Thank you.
Ethan
You did it.
Kate
Thank you, friend. We will be back tomorrow and we are starting the show with David's reels.
Harley
He.
Kate
I can't promise under pressure.
David
Don't even. Don't even.
Kate
For them to be funny.
David
I don't give a shit.
Harley
I don't know.
Ethan
It'll be. It'll be tough to do. I.
Kate
You better come across.
Ethan
We have a couple things to get through, but we'll do our best for sure. Make sure you add them.
David
I don't even.
Kate
We'll try to make it, bud. We'll try.
David
Because now it's gonna be a whole thing. And if they're not that funny,
Ethan
no one is. No one expects anything.
Kate
Is there a spotlight in the studio? Can you, like, see. Stand up and do, like a presentation for us and we'll critique them because that's where we're at.
Ethan
Tomorrow's episode we're doing David's doing tight five minutes.
Kate
Hot seat. You're on the hot seat for your
Ethan
real stand up surprise stand up bit.
David
Yeah, perfect.
Kate
We'll talk more about it, but I do want to do a bit for it now that it's taken so long. Okay, everyone, we'll see you tomorrow.
Harley
Bye.
Kate
Bye.
David
Bye.
Ethan
Oh, shout out, Chris. Look at that. Passes. Nice. Freeze.
Kate
What the are you talking?
Ethan
I saw someone. Someone gave money.
Kate
Oh, shout out. Shout out. Good eye, M.
Hosts: Ethan Klein, Kate, Harley, David
Special Theme: A deep-dive into the shocking true crime case of the “Australian Mushroom Murders,” centering on Erin Patterson, her poisoned Beef Wellington, and the twisted family drama behind one of Australia’s wildest murder trials.
This After Dark episode centers on the Australian Mushroom Murders: a chilling true crime story involving Erin Patterson, who, in 2023, prepared a Beef Wellington meal laced with deadly mushrooms, leading to the deaths of three relatives and the hospitalization of a fourth. The hosts recap the full case, motivations, messy family dynamics, and stunning court revelations—as well as the bizarre aftermath and online fascination.
The panel delivers an in-depth, irreverent, yet respectful rundown of a murder that gripped Australia and the true crime world, with signature H3 banter and offbeat comedic detours.
“She’s providing interest-free loans to Simon’s siblings. So Erin is doing a lot for these people ... and then she also bought her home outright, the home where all this went down ... So it doesn’t feel like she did any of this for money. But she’s also not happy with the money she has.” – Kate (29:01)
“His mum was horrified I had claimed child support. Why isn’t she horrified her son is such a deadbeat ... do not getting involved. ... So fuck them.” – Kate relaying Erin’s message (40:39)
“According to the one person who survived, she served herself on a separate small, different-colored plate." – Kate (58:27) “She’s just trying to talk her out of leaving, essentially.” – Kate (66:28)
“So her argument is that she accidentally bought poison mushrooms which are naturally sold at the Asian grocer.” – Kate (97:08) “I don’t trust it ... Just leave the mushrooms alone. We should not be just rolling the dice.” – Kate (89:12)
“What foolishness possesses a person to think that murder could be the solution to their problems? … Especially the murder of people who have only good intentions towards her.” – Ian Wilkinson (163:31)
On Erin’s Motivation:
“Not a single thing. Not a single thing. But I think she freaked out ...” – Kate (68:27)
On Fake Crying:
“Not a single tear, by the way. Not a single tear. I hate when people do the fake cry and there’s no tears.” – Ethan (123:28)
The “Crockery” Clue:
“She asked me, is Erin short of crockery? Is there a reason she would have this different kind of plate?” – Trial testimony (157:10)
Harley on Family Annihilators:
“Just kill yourself. … Why do you have to kill everybody else?” (125:23)
Survivor’s Grace:
“[Wilkinson] is the pastor at the church they all went to … he’s a pastor … even after assassination attempt, just being like, ‘be kind to each other.’” (177:00)
Beef Wellington Bit:
“You can’t say no to Beef Wellington. It’s classy. Everyone gets stoked.” – Harley (121:41)
After over 3 hours of dark true crime, the panel watches and comments on wholesome/funny viral reels—especially a series about chubby cousin rivalry in Vietnam—to “cleanse” the audience’s emotional palate (186:09–193:37).
Summary prepared for listeners who want the full twists, key facts, and H3 flavor—without all the murdery mushrooms.
