Friends on the Handsome Pod Chatting with friends on the Handsome Pod Pretty Little episode Good morning and welcome to a pretty little episode. I'm one of your handsome hosts, Mae Martin, joined by unfortunate looking, tanned, glowing.
Tig Notaro
I think what it is is a, you know, treading water. It's the New year. New year, new me. That's my, my motto for the year.
Mae Martin
You coined that, right?
Tig Notaro
Yeah, no one's ever said that before.
Mae Martin
That's yours.
Tig Notaro
So I've started off strong with treading water. So I got a little tan, I think, because of being outside. And I went to an event last night so I had a lot of makeup on.
Mae Martin
Oh, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Tig Notaro
That's why my hair is still a little crazy.
Mae Martin
No, you look great. You look like you just. You just like stayed out all night, so you still got the makeup in the hair, basically.
Tig Notaro
I didn't stay all out all night. I just didn't do a good job of taking it all off.
Mae Martin
I see.
Tig Notaro
Yeah, yeah, that's the, that's the thing that when you get glammed up, I forget about the, like, oh, I have to be diligent about taking it all off.
Mae Martin
Yeah. You got your bedtime routine. Has to be on point.
Tig Notaro
I do need to work on a bedtime routine. Do you have a bedtime routine?
Mae Martin
Do I ever? Well, it depends if I'm self destructing or not. If I'm self destructing, then I'm having a cigarette, I'm watching porn. That's really bleak. But if I am in a good place, then I'm using a toner and cleanser and a serum and you're like.
Tig Notaro
And porn.
Mae Martin
And porn. And then have a cigarette. No, I'm not smoking this year.
Tig Notaro
I've decided New year, new you.
Mae Martin
New year new me. And I coined that one. Sounds similar to yours. But no, I, I was on a plane yesterday though, and. And I try to take care of my skin after I go on a plane and there was a little boy next to me. I was like, yeah, in, in my. You Know the seats were in twos and it was me and this maybe 8 year old boy.
Tig Notaro
Yeah.
Mae Martin
And I don't know, I guess his parents were on the flight somewhere. But this, he was like in a T shirt and shorts and it was cold in the plane and he didn't have a book. He didn't have. He didn't watch tv. He was just sitting there and, and sleeping kind of with his head propped up on his elbow. And I was like, yeah. And then I felt weird because I sort of nudged him and I go, hey, do you want a blanket or something? Or like you can put your chair backwards. And he was like, know. And I was like, okay. And then I, it was driving me crazy because it's like a three hour flight. And I was like, get this kid a blanket. So then I weirdly asked the steward or the flight attendant, I go, could I get a blanket for the kid? He was like, sleep. The kid was already sleeping though.
Tig Notaro
Yeah.
Mae Martin
And then I kind of put this blanket on this kid and he was like, he clearly said he didn't want one, so what am I doing trying to put a blanket on him? I don't know.
Tig Notaro
You're like, I know what's best for you.
Mae Martin
I felt so protective of him. I was like, where are your parents?
Tig Notaro
Oh, that's so sweet though. I mean I would, that would be jarring to me.
Mae Martin
I know.
Tig Notaro
Like what? I've only known kids to be covered in having to have an iPad in front of their face.
Mae Martin
Yes.
Tig Notaro
This sounds like stimulation.
Mae Martin
He was like a world weary businessman. Like just.
Tig Notaro
He was like been this route many a times.
Mae Martin
Yeah. Yeah. Just at a conference. I mean he was wearing a very adult watch, I will say, but he was definitely a child.
Tig Notaro
Maybe I was like, is this Benjamin Button?
Mae Martin
Yeah.
Tig Notaro
But it is kind, kind of refreshing to see a 8 year old that's not addicted to entertainment or that's true games or whatever it is.
Mae Martin
Yeah, totally. He was wise. I mean I. Yeah. What did I do? I was like, I always have a book on my lap that I'm like, I'm gonna read this. And then I end up just watching some. Oh man. I watched one of the worst movies I think I've ever seen. But I won't say what it is.
Tig Notaro
Oh really?
Mae Martin
No one we know is in it or anything, but it's just one of those things where you're like, man, like this got made, you know? This is crazy.
Tig Notaro
And knowing how hard it is to get movies made, you're like, how did that happen exactly?
Mae Martin
Because it was basically the plot of Memento. Like, guy has no memory and he's solving a murder and then he's the murderer.
Tig Notaro
Oh. Basically.
Mae Martin
But it was like, spoiler alert. Oh, yes. Well, yeah.
Tig Notaro
Sorry for unknown movie.
Mae Martin
Yeah. Yeah.
Tig Notaro
That is the funny thing about being out here for so long now. You can't really crap on movies. A. Because you know how hard it was to get it made.
Mae Martin
Yes.
Tig Notaro
And. And you probably know a bunch of people that were somehow involved.
Mae Martin
Yeah.
Tig Notaro
Either on the cast or crew.
Mae Martin
And normally I'm super nonjudgmental because I. Yeah. Because I'm just like. Well, it's a huge feat to get something made, but this was like so bad.
Tig Notaro
Yeah, yeah. And normally on planes, movies are a little bit better for some reason. Like even a bad movie.
Mae Martin
Oh yeah. True, true. Yeah. Well, yeah, I mean, I watched the whole thing glued to it.
Tig Notaro
So I like sob. Watching a rom com on a plane.
Mae Martin
Yeah. I love it because I think just.
Tig Notaro
It just opens you up somehow.
Mae Martin
I know.
Tig Notaro
Oxygen or whatever it is.
Mae Martin
And you already love. You're very moved by. By flights as a rule. Because you're saying, I'm leaving.
Tig Notaro
I'm leaving on a jet plane.
Mae Martin
See the tone there? And like you just woke up. The tone there was absolutely beautiful. It was like how many did my.
Tig Notaro
Vocal warm ups made?
Mae Martin
Yeah, you were.
Tig Notaro
You posted a picture of jumping into a lake or something that looked really pretty.
Mae Martin
Some would say jumping into a lake. Some would say doing a handstand by the sea.
Tig Notaro
Oh, that's what it was. Yeah, I did. I don't think I must have watched it quickly because I didn't see the handstand part.
Mae Martin
Yeah, it was. I was doing a. Oh, no. You know what? I did post a thing of jumping in. No, I went to Mexico and then I poached. I poached. I poached tick of legs. I posted me doing a handstand by the sea, but I can't actually stay vertical, so I had to time it with my friend. She had to take the photo just in the one moment where I was vertical. So it looked like I was really nice. Yeah.
Tig Notaro
Was it a good. A good visit? A good break?
Mae Martin
Yeah, I mean I got a. Maybe on a. On a full up. I'll get. I'll get deep into it because it was like Tulum Mexico. Very spiritual.
Tig Notaro
I've been there.
Mae Martin
It feels very like some energy vortex there. It's a. It's a special place. The.
Tig Notaro
Yeah.
Mae Martin
The like swimming holes and then the.
Tig Notaro
The cenotes.
Mae Martin
The cenotes. And then like, the knowledge that the Mayans had about astrology and. And, I mean, I'm big.
Tig Notaro
That's pretty incredible.
Mae Martin
It's incredible. And I'm into aliens, as you know. Yeah.
Tig Notaro
Well, you have to think about the experience you had, and when we're with Tig next time, you got to tell us more about it.
Mae Martin
Yeah.
Tig Notaro
And. Yeah, because that's.
Mae Martin
I will for sure.
Tig Notaro
All right.
Mae Martin
I'm excited. Should we. Should we get into a question?
Tig Notaro
Let's do it.
Ainsley
Hey, handsome. This is Ainsley. Thank you for being my friends that I take on walks and car rides and commutes. You just don't know it.
Tig Notaro
Aw.
Ainsley
My question for you all is, if you could have one animal follow you around for the rest of your life, what would it be? And why are you choosing that animal?
Mae Martin
Oh, God, that's good. I mean, you have one.
Tig Notaro
I have one. That answer came in my head immediately. My biggie baby. My biggie baby bear.
Mae Martin
Oh, my God.
Tig Notaro
I mean, if I could have him follow me forever, that would be a dream come true. I don't know why dogs don't have longer lifespans, but that's for another day.
Mae Martin
Yeah. But teach actually about love and loss.
Tig Notaro
I know. I've been home for the last month, and I didn't work at all for the last two weeks, which is highly unusual and not happened in a very long time, where I literally had nothing.
Mae Martin
I love that for you. That makes me feel calm. Yeah.
Tig Notaro
Yeah.
Mae Martin
Like, that makes my blood pressure go down. Just hearing. Because you are. You work harder than anyone that I know, so that's nice.
Tig Notaro
Oh, thank you.
Mae Martin
He was just. Was he pumped to have you around?
Tig Notaro
Yeah, he just. I just was, you know, in a space where I was being very reflective of life and everything. So I was like. I was just a little bit. My. I don't know how to describe it. Like, I. I vibrate kind of pretty high because there's a lot going on, so I'm juggling a lot of stuff, so my energy is probably up higher.
Mae Martin
Yeah.
Tig Notaro
And I was just, like, down, down, down, down, down, like, thinking about life and thinking about everything, and he just kind of. I felt. I feel like he just sort of picked up on this energy.
Mae Martin
Yeah.
Tig Notaro
And just was, like, my little shadow for a while. And I would take him everywhere I went. Like, if I ran errands, go to the park, and it was just, like, really calming having I took him to our live show.
Mae Martin
Yeah. He was. He was a star.
Tig Notaro
Yeah. He's just. It really made a big difference just having him with me.
Mae Martin
Okay. Well, yeah, you have the perfect. There's a word for like an. I'm thinking about the Golden Compass books where there's like, you know, every human has their demon or their spirit. They're familiar. It's like they, you know, that's their animal that talks to them.
Tig Notaro
Yeah.
Mae Martin
Yours is definitely big. Like, you guys are twin souls. Mine would be because I've been doing these animal paintings, Right?
Tig Notaro
That's right.
Mae Martin
I'm thinking a lot about animal energies and things. And when I was in Mexico, I saw like this screaming monkey, and I kind of had a vision of this screaming monkey, and I did not like that. I thought, okay, no monkeys. That's too chaotic.
Tig Notaro
They're kind of sneaky a little bit too.
Mae Martin
Yeah. I think I want something playful. So I was gonna say like a sea otter, but then I thought it would feel kind of like having a child. Like. Like that playful toddler energy would be maybe exhausting after a while. Like, I kind of want something wise that can all grounded spoon me. You know, like a leopard or something. I'm gonna say jaguar would be. Oh, because if the jaguar is a. Let's say it's a teen jaguar. So when it can be adorable still and I can pet it, but also not that I want teens to spoon me, but like a jaguar. Yeah. It's not like a full grown. Okay. I'm. Yeah, jaguar.
Tig Notaro
And it's kind of cool, too. Like, it has a vibe about it.
Mae Martin
Oh, so serious vibe. Yeah.
Tig Notaro
And y'all could be in paintings together or like you're shirtless and hugging the jaguar.
Mae Martin
Oh, my God. Shirtless and hugging the jaguar. Imagine what that would feel like.
Tig Notaro
Yeah.
Mae Martin
Very nice. And you could play with it like that? Kind of wrestle and play fight. Yeah, I'm going to go jaguar.
Tig Notaro
Okay. Hopefully it's tame and, you know, I'll tame it. Okay. I believe it. Some people just know they could save hundreds on car insurance by checking Allstate first.
Fortune Feimster
Like, you know, to check and make sure you're wearing a fascinating hat before attending a traditional English tea party.
Tig Notaro
Yeah. Check in first is smart. So check Allstate first for a quote that could save you hundreds. You're in good hands with Allstate. This content is intended for audiences in the U.S. only savings vary terms apply. Allstate Fire and Casualty Insurance Company and affiliates Northbrook, Illinois. Biggie was spooning me this morning. So I. I get that.
Mae Martin
Oh, so good.
Tig Notaro
He's little, so his, you know, he can't, like, properly do it. But I was on My side, so my legs were kind of pulled in, and he went in the nook between my legs.
Mae Martin
Oh, my God.
Tig Notaro
And just, like, nestled in. God, that's pretty great.
Mae Martin
That's incredible.
Tig Notaro
Oh, what a great question.
Mae Martin
We're going Biggie and Jaguar. Biggie would be less obtrusive in your day to day life. The jaguar would get in the way, but I think people would have to deal.
Tig Notaro
It'd be hard to sneak a Jaguar into, like, dinner.
Mae Martin
Yeah.
Tig Notaro
At a restaurant.
Mae Martin
It would have to pretend it was my coat or something. Just, like, drape it around me.
Tig Notaro
Let's hear what Ainsley said.
Ainsley
My answer is a giraffe, because they are wildly entertaining and they're beautiful and they're goofy and somewhat practical because you'd have an extra mode of transportation and you wouldn't get lost in a crowd. And supposedly the answer to this question represents what you look for in a life partner. So I'm excited to hear what y'all say.
Tig Notaro
Oh, thanks for being you. That put a whole new element into it.
Mae Martin
Oh, my God.
Tig Notaro
Don't you think?
Mae Martin
Yes, I think. And I think it's really told me a lot about myself, particularly because I want that slightly dangerous power, but that playfulness. And I said, I can tame it. Which is like. Is that what I want? I'm looking.
Tig Notaro
I can tame it.
Mae Martin
I'm looking for a wild jaguar that I can attempt to tame. Jesus.
Tig Notaro
Well, you can have a boring. Like, you definitely can't go boring. You need a little more excitement.
Mae Martin
So Ainsley wants a giraffe partner.
Tig Notaro
Yeah. Someone very tall, kind of a goofball.
Mae Martin
Yeah.
Tig Notaro
I guess Biggie would be, like, safe.
Mae Martin
Yeah. Security.
Tig Notaro
Security. Loyal, cuddly. Yeah, I. I think that tracks.
Mae Martin
That tracks. Did you know that recently there was a baby giraffe born with no spots? It's the first one ever recorded ever.
Tig Notaro
Whoa. May fact.
Mae Martin
Yeah.
Tig Notaro
Did not know that.
Mae Martin
Yeah.
Tig Notaro
Love it. All right, let's get to our next one.
Mae Martin
Yeah. Why did I say just became a barista or something?
Sam
Hello, handsome pod. Hello, May. Hello, Tig. Hello, fortune. Hello, Thomas. My name is Sam. A handsome little Latham from Massachusetts here to ask you, aside from handsome, of course, what is your favorite podcast?
Tig Notaro
Ooh, Sam, Good question.
Mae Martin
By the way, they have a very enticing voice to me. I mean, I'm a sucker for anyone using my name. Like, it's. Anyone going, well, may I? You know? Oh, okay.
Tig Notaro
That video of Lois and Bram, it blew up. Blew up. And your reaction to them saying your name was part of that.
Mae Martin
I really burst into Tears. That was crazy.
Tig Notaro
So I believe that you. You get moved by someone saying your name.
Mae Martin
I really do. Yeah. It. It like wakes me right up and puts me in the present moment.
Tig Notaro
Yeah.
Mae Martin
Because I know they're either mad at me or into me.
Tig Notaro
It's the tone in which they said, May.
Mae Martin
Yeah. Yeah.
Tig Notaro
Hey, May. Yeah. Do you have favorite podcasts?
Mae Martin
Yeah, I have a bunch. Well, I. I think the first podcast I ever got into was Professor Blast off and I was in London and. Yeah. Because it was the first podcast I listened to where I, like, really laughed out loud and felt like I knew them. That was takes first podcast, I think, or second podcast.
Tig Notaro
And those were early days.
Mae Martin
So long ago.
Tig Notaro
This is like 20.
Mae Martin
What, 2012 or something, maybe. And then I got really into serial, and then kind of from then on, it's like true crime for me. I'm listening pretty much every day.
Tig Notaro
Did serial kind of kick off that true crime craze?
Mae Martin
Definitely. With podcasts.
Tig Notaro
Yeah.
Mae Martin
That was.
Tig Notaro
It was that Adnan case, I believe.
Mae Martin
Yes. Adnan Syed. I can hear the theme song in my head still.
Tig Notaro
And her voice was so calming.
Mae Martin
Her voice was amazing.
Tig Notaro
And I think all the ads were for mailchimp.
Mae Martin
Oh, yeah, they're all for mailchimp. Yeah. Yeah, you're so right. Yeah.
Tig Notaro
Yeah. Those were. Those were early, early podcast days of like, what? Oh, this is interesting.
Mae Martin
Yeah. Did you. What about you? Do you remember, like, having a podcast used to be, like the butt of a joke with comics.
Tig Notaro
It was like, yeah. Oh, you guys. Now it's like residential nominees are going on there.
Mae Martin
I know.
Tig Notaro
I was kind of a late adapter to podcast. I think I remember the first one I kind of clocked as being popular was my favorite murder. Yeah.
Mae Martin
I was deep into that because I'm.
Tig Notaro
Friends with Karen Kilgariff and had known her for years doing stand up. And I was always like, God, Karen's like the funniest person I know. Like, every year I would be like, this person should be the most famous person in this show. Like this. The talent coming out of this woman is like, next level.
Mae Martin
It's crazy.
Tig Notaro
And then all of a sudden, all the, you know, I was touring and I would see around all these cities, my favorite murder sold out. And I was like, whoa. Karen's podcast is, like, popular. This is, like, a thing. And I started listening to it and loved it.
Mae Martin
Yeah.
Tig Notaro
So I listened to that for a long time. I haven't listened as much lately just because I've been so busy. Now I'm getting into the kind of self help.
Mae Martin
Oh yeah, Podcast world.
Tig Notaro
Mel Robbins, I've been listening to is.
Mae Martin
Mel Robbins Let them.
Tig Notaro
Yeah, Mel, she wrote that book Let Them.
Mae Martin
I'm obsessed with let them 2025 is let them for me.
Tig Notaro
I think a lot of people are adapting that.
Mae Martin
Yeah. It's like if people are being adopting women around or they don't want to just let them.
Tig Notaro
She did do an asterisk, I feel like lately because a lot of people were just kind of using it to be like it, which is part of it. But she then, she then kind of did an addendum of like, let me. So it's like, oh yeah, you can let them do whatever. This, that and that. But then that means you also have to walk away. Like do this. Yeah, yeah. So it's not like go do whatever the fuck you want.
Mae Martin
No, it's like, it's like instead of trying to change or chase people, just control your environment and your reactions to things.
Tig Notaro
Yeah. Because you can let them go do whatever, I guess. But that has consequences. Yeah. So it's like you both have to weigh what is worth it.
Mae Martin
Yeah.
Tig Notaro
So yeah, just kind of doing more of that stuff lately. I started Esther Perel. Y'all got me into listening Isn't she Amazing podcast.
Mae Martin
Yeah, yeah, she's amazing. And I, I went through. I got into Call Chelsea Peretti when she first started that podcast because I loved it's. I felt like it was very aspirational for me because I loved that she would just hang up on callers. Like she would be so mean to people. But it was so like cathartic to listen to and funny and. And like the people calling would just like want her to be mean to them. And I loved it. And I love Sarah Silverman's podcast and I used to listen to Anna Faris podcast a lot. I thought that was. There's an episode with Alison Janney that was really funny or they did improv.
Tig Notaro
I feel like Anna's also was one of the not early adapters of podcasts, but one of the early ones to get a lot of success.
Mae Martin
Yeah. But if anyone has recommendations for bingeable true crime series where especially where like there's a resolution at the end that would be great. Like Shittown was amazing. Or Dr. Death, I think.
Tig Notaro
Yeah. I think I like anything that's like, I like true crime. I like comedy. People are making me laugh and some self help situations where I'm learning something.
Mae Martin
I have one. If anyone is feeling really like depressed and lost, there's one by Michael Mead. Called Living Myth. And it's like little bite sized episodes where this amazing guy, Michael Mead, who used to be like a. Like a prisoner of war, and he is into mythology and he interprets the modern world through the lens of mythology to help us understand it. And it's a really. And it's really calming. And he goes, welcome to the Living Myth podcast in which the shifting, changing world we live in is looked at from a mythic perspective. Anyway.
Tig Notaro
Oh, nice. That definitely sounds up your alley. Well, there you go. Yeah, those are all great. I just listened to one about attachment styles. I'm. Oh my God.
Mae Martin
Do you think you're avoidant or anxious or both?
Tig Notaro
I might be fearful. Fearful, Avoidant, maybe. Wow. But I go in between. Secure. I think I'm secure and have a little bit of that. I have. I go both depending on if my life's in a good place.
Mae Martin
Yeah, I know. That's the thing about once you self diagnose with an attachment style, it's like, well, these things can change too and it's dependent on the situation you're in and. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Tig Notaro
Because I've been very secure as well.
Mae Martin
Yeah.
Tig Notaro
It's interesting anyway.
Mae Martin
Super interesting.
Tig Notaro
Let's see what Sam said.
Sam
For me, aside from handsome, of course, my favorite podcast is Ologies with Alie Ward. I think may, especially if you don't know of this one, I think you would really enjoy it. There is so much interesting information, lots of cool facts that you can learn about the world around us to keep in your back pocket or write down in a notebook to present to your future dates. But definitely one to give a listen to.
Mae Martin
I just wrote that down. Ologies. I'm gonna listen to it. That's amazing.
Tig Notaro
Yeah.
Mae Martin
Thanks, Sam.
Tig Notaro
Yeah, I welcome any recommendations as well. Because anytime I travel now, I love music and I always love music, especially when I want to just like be light and airy. But most of my travels, I'm listening to a podcast now.
Mae Martin
Really?
Tig Notaro
Yeah. So yeah, hit us up with some recommendations.
Mae Martin
Yeah. Especially if they have facts that. That would be great. Well, this is a great. This is a great time as always.
Tig Notaro
Yeah, absolutely. It's always interesting to hear people's questions. And I learned something new about my handsome host every day.
Mae Martin
Did a. Please submit your questions to speakpipe.com handsomepod keep them coming. Especially I really liked the reveal that the animal we chose was what we wanted to partner. I like those personality test type things where you're like, describe a box, it's in a field and then you're like, well the box is your inner child in the field with your mother. And you're like, what?
Tig Notaro
Yeah, because we don't know what questions are being asked. So when we hear it, it's our brain just immediately like what is the first thing that's coming to our brain? Yeah, and I do think that says something about yeah, more than like there's something subconsciously telling us this thing, but we don't know why.
Mae Martin
Thank you everyone.
Tig Notaro
Yeah, we hope everybody has an awesome weekend. Thank you for listening to this pre little episode and catch us on our full Handsome episode on Tuesday. And keep like may said submitting your questions. Get your handsome merch and in the.
