Friends on the Handsome Pod Chatting with.
Fortune Feimster
Friends on the Handsome part. Pretty little episode. Welcome to the Handsome pod. I am your host, Fortune Feenster.
May Martin
And I am your host, May Martin. And then Thomas is here too. Hello.
Fortune Feimster
We're keeping it handsome. Always. Can't help wear my handsome sweatpants all weekend.
May Martin
Oh, you did?
Fortune Feimster
I love them. They're my favorite. When it starts to get chilly outside, it's time for my handsome pants.
May Martin
God, I like when it gets a little chilly.
Fortune Feimster
Mm.
May Martin
Yeah. I've been playing a lot of foosball late into the night and wearing a jacket to do it. I don't know how I'm bringing up foosball in reference to, like, I'm shoehorning it in. I'm finding it's fun.
Fortune Feimster
You love foosball?
May Martin
I love it. And I started watching a documentary about the history of foosball, and it's fascinating.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah.
May Martin
Yeah. It was in. In the Second World War, soldiers went to Europe and it was huge in Europe and like France and stuff. And they.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah.
May Martin
So they came over and brought it over here and then. And then it's like video killed the radio star once. Once video game machines came in.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah.
May Martin
It just like eliminate all those buildings became arcades and anyway.
Fortune Feimster
Oh, wow.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
Well, look at that. Another May packed.
May Martin
May packed. I was. It was my. My friend Matt who lives with me. It was his birthday yesterday, so obviously we're playing some foos. And then this trash talk character came out of me that was kind of like Debbie the. The hairdresser. Because every time he'd lose a point, I go, oh, and on his birthday too. Oh, isn't it a shame? The birthday boys. It was so. I don't know where it came from. It was so cruel.
Fortune Feimster
Did it get him off his game?
May Martin
Yeah, it really rattled him. The only he. He beats me every time. So the only way I can get in his head is trash talk. How are you? How are you?
Fortune Feimster
I'm good. I'm gearing up for Thanksgiving will be next week.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
Now, I know obviously that's not a holiday you grew up with. I forgot. Do you. Now that you're in the States, do you do something for Thanksgiving?
May Martin
Well, we have it in Canada. It's just in a different month. Right. Thomas?
Fortune Feimster
Is.
May Martin
Is it. Yeah, it's in October. It's in October. And usually I do something for it, but maybe not this year. But. Yeah. Yeah. I think I should find somewhere and do, like, a friendsgiving.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah. I love. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.
May Martin
Yeah. Because there's no pressure to give gifts. It's just.
Fortune Feimster
And I love that. I don't mind because I don't mind buying people gifts. I want people. People, you know, I want to be generous for sure. I just. I'm not always, like. I just don't always know what to buy people. So Christmas is a lot of pressure. Birthdays is way too much pressure because I have a good friend's birthday soon, and I'm just like, I have no idea what to get.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
For Thanksgiving, I'm excited because in the last. Gosh, since pre Covid, I have not had a holiday with my family.
May Martin
No way.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah. I realized that I had seen my mom on Christmas Eve and. But just her. And then had flown out on Christmas day. We just started doing other things. And now a kid that I'm. It's me. I'm gathering my family. I rented a house in my hometown, and everybody's. All the family's coming because, you know, with my mom being sick, I'm just trying to make things a little more special when I can. We're also planning an 80th birthday party for her. Oh, my New year. Oh, my God.
May Martin
Yeah. You gotta make some memories. And just like.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah, I'm trying to make memories because, you know, hopefully she's around for a long time, but I just don't want to, you know, not do cool things with everybody when we can.
May Martin
Yeah. Oh, Thanksgiving will be fun. How many people are you gonna have?
Fortune Feimster
It'll be, like, 13 of us. Fun. Not all staying at this house, but. But eating together. Yeah.
May Martin
Fun.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah.
May Martin
Do you turkey me up?
Fortune Feimster
Does it. You're one of those people that, like, gets super tired.
May Martin
Yeah, but maybe I'm just one of those people that makes a big deal out of it. Like, oh, I've got a turkey. I'm tired.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah. I don't feel like it does too much to me. I like to. I don't go too crazy on the Thanksgiving food. I eat a plate of it, and then I go for leftovers later that night.
May Martin
Leftovers are fucking good. Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. Well, I don't. I don't. I. That makes me think I should host something at. At my place. I should make it a thing.
Fortune Feimster
I know. Well, you got the place now.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
Friendsgiving is really fun, too. When I was in my 20s, I had two roommates, and my roommate Steve and I, who I just saw in Atlanta, he and I used to host friends givings at our house. And those are some of my favorite memories I've ever had. Cause I was too broke to fly home for Thanksgiving. It was too close to Christmas.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
And I would fly home for Christmas. So the family would be. Christmas and then Friendsgiving, and we would all, like. Steve and I would be in charge of the turkey and drinks, and everybody else would bring the side dishes.
May Martin
Yeah, it's good.
Fortune Feimster
It's pretty fun. I think you should do it.
May Martin
Have you ever heard of a frozen charlotte?
Fortune Feimster
What's that?
May Martin
It's like they used to hide a little porcelain doll inside of a cake. And then if you get the. If you get the frozen Charlotte, you're. I guess, the king.
Fortune Feimster
I've heard of the king cake, which is a similar thing. It's a New Orleans thing.
May Martin
Yeah, I don't think we do enough hiding things in food.
Fortune Feimster
I mean, as long I would be too nervous to break a tooth.
May Martin
Yeah, that's true.
Fortune Feimster
I don't want to bite down on anything.
May Martin
Yeah, okay.
Fortune Feimster
I won't.
May Martin
I won't. I won't prank you.
Fortune Feimster
All right. I appreciate it. Well, let me know if you end up doing something.
May Martin
Yeah. Should we see what people want to know?
Abby
Hello, handsomes. This is Abby from Southern Illinois. And my question for you as we are getting closer to the holiday season, what is the gift that was your most favorite to give someone else? Like the one that you were so excited to give them that maybe you gave it early or you almost let the secret spill a million times.
May Martin
Ooh. Ooh, that's good. I mean, I have a. My. My friend Joe who wrote Feel Good With Me. He and I. I think I've talked about this before, that he. He did this painting called Zorg, and it's just this really grotesque face. And he just did it one night when we were hanging out and. And painting and forgot about it. But it's become like a. Like, I had T shirts made, and then I mail. I mailed them to his roommates, and so those presents are always my favorites. Like, on. On his birthday, he went to the pub and they had prearranged that like the bartender was wearing a Zorg T shirt.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah.
May Martin
Things like you. But also recently my. I have a friend who's. Whose mom is actually very sick and she's been really stressed and so I got her. I like got her an Airbnb really close to the hospital and her parents house.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah.
May Martin
That felt good because it was like practical and helpful. Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
That's really sweet.
May Martin
Yeah. What about you?
Fortune Feimster
I was trying to think like what present has stood out? Oh my gosh.
May Martin
It's like the always the more personal ones. Right. But right then that gets harder to do.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah. There was one that came to mind. I'm not going to share that one.
May Martin
Okay.
Fortune Feimster
I did. I did date someone who I had never really bought like a nice. I had not been in a ton of serious stuff and this. Not that this was like super serious, but I really like this person. And I bought her a nice coat and my friend, my best friend helped me pick it out and I was so proud of this because it was like classy. Yeah. And I just had never given a woman a nice present like this before and it always. And I was just so pumped about it. And. And I think. And she loved it and I think we broke up like a month later. But she still has. She told me she still has the coat. Really?
May Martin
She still rocks.
Fortune Feimster
She still has it and loves it. So that makes. It was not a waste. It makes me feel good that she still enjoys it and that it's a fond memory for her too.
May Martin
Yeah. That's nice and romantic and it's. It's hard buying clothes for people.
Fortune Feimster
Oh my. I never ever, ever do it. And yeah. And it was just something that happened to work and my friend nailed it with that one. And yeah, it just made me very like I felt like an adult for the first time of like, look at me. Nice present for someone.
May Martin
Yeah, that's nice. Yeah, it'd be nice to get someone a puppy or something, but that's a big risk.
Fortune Feimster
You have to really know that. Yeah, they want that. You have to know that they want that. And you would have to know like a lot of like this is the breed and this is the. And they're up for it and. But man, that would be a tough present to buy someone. I also, I've heard you're not supposed to buy people art because art is so subjective.
May Martin
Oh really?
Fortune Feimster
Not so you can't have like I've had people had like pictures like painted of like Biggie or something. That's yeah. Adorable. But just like art in general. Okay.
May Martin
I'm just going over all. All the times I've given people art and. And then realizing I've never seen it in their home.
Fortune Feimster
Well, because, yeah, it's like, you might think it's like amazing. Another person's like, yeah, yeah. But you never know. Some people might love your. Your taste in art as well.
May Martin
Some people loved La La Land and I hated it. You know, and to each their own. Yeah. Let's hear Abby's answer.
Abby
My answer for that is I actually have two. Both going to the same person. My wife. The first would be one year for her birthday. I threw her a surprise taskmaster birthday May. I'm sure you appreciate that. And I actually sculpted her a life size trophy of Greg Davies head. The second gift would be that I actually, for Christmas this year, got her surprise tickets to go see Fortune in Indianapolis in January.
Fortune Feimster
Oh, my gosh.
Abby
And if you guys air this before Christmas, you guys will actually get to be the ones to tell her about the surprise, which would be kind of fun too.
Fortune Feimster
Surprise. Surprise.
Abby
Thank you guys so much. And stay handsome.
Fortune Feimster
You are coming to Indianapolis, my friend.
May Martin
Oh, my God.
Fortune Feimster
Exciting.
May Martin
That's amazing. Like, experience gifts are always the best, so I love them. Let's just encourage people to buy comedy tickets all the time.
Fortune Feimster
I will say they. And I don't just say this because they're our shows, but it. Every person that has come to my show who has gotten it as a gift is like, this was the best gift.
May Martin
Oh, that's nice.
Fortune Feimster
Because you're with usually your friend or your partner, you know, on a date. And, and it's. And if it's a friend, they're. They've had a blast with each other. If it's a date that they feel connected to their partner, they're laughing. It's fun. I think it's such a great gift.
May Martin
Yeah, it is. Yeah. And there's a nice. I don't. I think your shows are the same, but there's like a nice community vibe there. People are friendly and there's. I don't know, people make friends in the lineup for the bathroom and stuff. It's. Yeah. Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
It is like such a, A good vibe.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
So you'll. You'll leave. If you come to any our shows, you'll leave very happy.
May Martin
Yeah. That's a good surprise. I can see.
Fortune Feimster
And.
May Martin
And my taskmaster trophy is there. The big head.
Fortune Feimster
That's right. And that.
May Martin
I have a. I know a lot of people who do taskmaster themed Parties. Because it's so. It's so fun.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah.
May Martin
Yeah. There's a board game, I think.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah, that's awesome.
May Martin
Thanks, Abby.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah. You know what's smart? Checking Allstate first for a quote that could save you hundreds on car insurance. You know what's not smart? Not checking that you packed your tripod before agreeing to make a video of your nephew's school play. Nobody warned you that the play was two hours long with no intermission and your arms are getting a little tired.
May Martin
Yeah, check in first is smart. So check Allstate first for a quote that could save you hundreds. You're in good hands with Allstate. Potential savings vary subject to terms, conditions and availability. Allstate North American Insurance Company and affiliates, Northbrook, Illinois. Should we hear another one?
Sam
Hello, Tig, Mae and Fortune. My name is Sam. A handsome little they them from Hamilton, Ohio. First of all, I absolutely love the podcast. Second of all, Fortune, I'm coming to see you in Cincinnati in January and I cannot wait.
Fortune Feimster
Very cool.
Sam
My question for you guys, I'm not particularly a Disney fan, but I recently posted on social media a picture of myself in a costume as a Disney character. And a lot of my fellow non binary friends were like, oh, my God, that's my favorite character too. So I'm particularly interested in May's answer on this, but I'd love to hear from all three of you guys, who is your favorite Disney character and why? Thanks and love the show.
May Martin
Well, I really identify with Lumiere the candle and so. And usually in Disney movies because it's so gendered. The old ones at least, that I grew up with, usually there's some like inanimate object character or an animal of some kind that I. That I relate to heavily. So.
Mira
Yeah.
May Martin
Okay. Because Lumiere is kind of a non binary icon in my mind.
Fortune Feimster
And a good singer.
May Martin
Great singer. So warm, so welcoming guests to be.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah.
May Martin
Who else? There's Abu the monkey from Aladdin.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah, I always like this. The. The like the characters that aren't involved with the love plot.
May Martin
Same.
Fortune Feimster
Because they're. They're the fun ones.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
Like in the Little Mermaid, the crab. What's his name?
May Martin
Oh, Sebastian.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah. Yeah. You see her floating there along the way. She don't got a lot to say something about her.
May Martin
Yes.
Fortune Feimster
And you don't know why, but you're dying to try. You wanna kiss a girl?
May Martin
Oh, you really know it.
Fortune Feimster
Oh, my God.
May Martin
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Flounder as well. I guess that's a little boy character, but yeah, yeah. The Crab Yago. The. Yeah. The sidekicks are the funniest.
Fortune Feimster
Always sidekicks are in the. In the Lion King. The. The Warthog.
May Martin
Yeah, the Warthog. And Zazu the Toucan. Well, I've never seen a king or beast with quite so little head.
Fortune Feimster
I want to be your mighty king. Never seen that.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
Little hair.
May Martin
Do you know who did the voice of Adult Simba?
Fortune Feimster
No.
May Martin
Well, I'll tell you.
Fortune Feimster
Tell me.
May Martin
Matthew Broderick.
Fortune Feimster
Oh, really?
May Martin
Yeah. Good little trivia there.
Fortune Feimster
That is. There's so many good songs in that one. Means no worries for the rest of.
May Martin
Okay. I guess we need to do Disney karaoke one night.
Fortune Feimster
Yes, we do.
May Martin
Like little musical theater kids.
Fortune Feimster
A whole new world. Come on.
May Martin
Oh, yeah. Come on.
Fortune Feimster
And then Ursula from Little Mermaid.
May Martin
Ursula is a gay icon. All the villains are pretty gay.
Fortune Feimster
Unfortunate. Yeah.
May Martin
And Flotsam and Jetsam, her little eels. Jafar is pretty gay. Yeah. I'm gonna go with Lumiere, though. In terms of gender identity, that's who I identify with.
Fortune Feimster
Mine's Sebastian from Full Mermaid.
May Martin
Yeah, I like that.
Fortune Feimster
But our new. Or I mean, not our. My soon to be favorite is nibbles from Zootopia 2.
May Martin
That's gonna be my favorite too. That's your character's name.
Fortune Feimster
It's my favorite character in Zootopia 2. And Zootopia 2 comes out. I can't remember if it's November 26th or 29th, but soon. It's soon.
May Martin
And you got all your handsome hosts in it.
Fortune Feimster
And all of you. All of us are in it. And my friend sent me a picture. His kid went to Pop Mart and there was already a. A figurine fig. The action figure thing of my Nibbles character.
May Martin
What? Already?
Fortune Feimster
Huh?
May Martin
That's insane.
Fortune Feimster
I was like, oh my gosh. This is so cool.
May Martin
I'm still hoping that we're going to be at the premiere together.
Fortune Feimster
I know. I'm trying to get off work. Yeah. But yeah.
May Martin
Should we hear Sam's answer?
Fortune Feimster
Yeah.
Sam
My answer is Peter Pan. There's just something about his energy and his zest for life and his enthusiasm of like being playful and silly that I just really love. I'm very playful and silly myself. So very fun. And yeah, apparently a lot of other non binary folks love Peter Pan as well. So there you go. Thanks, guys.
May Martin
Yeah, I completely. For. Of course. Peter Pan. I want to be so badly. And yeah, there's definitely like a queer vibe about. About Peter. Like a sort of cheeky little.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
I could totally see you playing Peter Pan.
May Martin
I would love to play Peter Pan.
Fortune Feimster
That would be fun.
May Martin
I'd want to play him as kind of a rebel.
Fortune Feimster
Like, next project.
May Martin
Tortured. Yeah, let's hear another one.
Mira
Hello, May Fortune and Tig. This is Mira. I am a handsome listener, Pretty little lady, originally from Durham, North Carolina. And I am a big fan of the POD and you three individually. And I am sending it a message today asking for some advice.
Fortune Feimster
Yes.
Mira
I have just graduated College. I am 23, and I have moved 7,000 miles away from my home on the east coast to Japan, where I'm working my first real job. And I am coming to terms with the fact that I think what I want to do with my life is do creative things, art things, theater things. And I'm 23 and life is a bit messy, and it's just like, ah, like, where do I start? Like, how do you start? You know, you're supposed to do something, but it's scary and you need a job and you have to make money and my time is running out. But. Yeah. So how do you start? That's my question.
May Martin
Oh, man, that's a great question. How cool that you're in Japan and, like, you know, finding yourself. And I guess I'm assuming that what. What you did in college isn't in the arts. And this is like a revelation, I think. I mean, it depends what aspect of the arts. But for me, like, I got a job in a box office of a comedy venue, working in the box office, and. And just went to see stuff as much as I can. So I was in the, like, immersed in the world of it, like getting an adjacent day job, you know, so that you're around it. That could be good. What about you? What do you think?
Fortune Feimster
Yeah, I mean, well, it's always helpful having a focus, like, if, you know, like, this is the field I want to be in. I'm not sure exactly how to get there, but, like, this is the goal. It's. I think it's harder when you. It's like, I don't know what I want to do. Then it's like, where do you even begin? So I think narrowing it down in that way is good.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah. Getting an adjacent job is helpful. I was an entertainment journalist first, and I knew, like, this is not what I want to do, but I'm in the business talking to people, doing the thing I want to do.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
So I can, like, pick their brain. I can learn more about the business in. In a way where, like, I understand it, but I don't have the Opportunity yet to be in it, but this is a way to like, be around it.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
And then I took class. A lot of classes.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
That's the thing. Get better in that field.
May Martin
Yeah. Classes are you, you meet people that end up becoming your peers and colleagues and collaborators. Like, you meet your cohort and you could still have a day job for a bit, but be taking classes and transitioning.
Fortune Feimster
Because if you took some sort of class in the arts, you know, maybe like, oh, that person ends up knowing this person. Oh, this art company is looking for this, or this person's needs help with their project. I mean, then you're meeting other people that are like, like minded in that world and you just never know where that will lead.
May Martin
Yeah. And I think, like, I think acting's particularly hard because you're, it's reliant on other people giving you work and auditioning and stuff. But some of the other ones, like, I, I, you can make your own. You can like go to a pub and say, I want to book the venue one night in six months and then advertise and have a night. Like, you can be proactive and make your own stuff.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah.
May Martin
So maybe that's. Is that advice?
Fortune Feimster
I think so.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
And also just set, I think just setting goals in general.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
With specific goals you want to hit can help you work towards something.
May Martin
Yeah. And find a buddy who also wants to get into it. And then you guys can go and see stuff together and go. And. Because sometimes if you're like, oh, I want to do comedy, so I'm going to go see a bunch of shows. It's intimidating just hanging out afterwards by yourself and trying to meet people. But if you go with someone, you can, you can tag team people.
Fortune Feimster
For sure.
May Martin
Love it. Mirror.
Fortune Feimster
Love it. Yeah.
May Martin
Also, you're young. Enjoy Japan.
Fortune Feimster
Yeah, for sure. I, I don't think there's any press to figure it out yet. No, man, you got to pay your bills, obviously. That's, you know.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
And honestly, you don't get to necessarily make money right away doing the thing you want to do. Sometimes you have to do just a job to pay the bills while still having that goal of these other things. Sometimes life just happens. So just be patient with yourself. Yeah.
May Martin
Big time. That was, that was lovely.
Fortune Feimster
It was lovely. We want people to keep sending us questions, advice, whatever you want. Speakpipe.com HandsomePod don't forget to get some handsome merch for these holidays coming up.
May Martin
Yeah.
Fortune Feimster
And some tickets to shows. Mae's going on tour. I'm on tour. Please ticks doing a bunch of shows.
May Martin
So yeah, and maybe write a little card for Thomas too.
Fortune Feimster
That's right, write a little card for Thomas. And I hope everyone has a great holiday. We'll talk to people before then in our right either episode. But yeah, just a time to be thankful. And I'm thankful for you and I'm thankful for you and for the pod and for everyone that listens. And yes, until next time, keep it pretty.
