Places you can still stand in and understand Scripture with your body, not only your mind. For this last one, we actually do not go to a ruin or a monument at all. We go to the table. Because when people come home from a trip like this and you ask them months later what stayed with them, the answer is almost never the famous sights, unforgettable as those are. It is the people. On our trips, we share a villa and eat together, and we open and close the week with a welcome dinner and a farewell dinner. Night after night, something happens around those tables that Rachael says she can never put on an itinerary or write into the marketing copy, and yet it happens every single time. The sights may crack your heart open, but the people are what fill the cracks. Strangers become family. People arrive nervous, not knowing anyone in the room, and by the end of the week it feels like a family dinner. Rachael tells the story of meeting Sylvia and Jesse last year and knowing within moments that these were going to be her people. She has watched travelers who arrived as strangers end up trading more than phone numbers, taking flights across the country to visit each other, praying for one another, staying in each other's lives. People find in a single week the kind of deep spiritual friendship they had been longing for and never found. That is not an accident. It may be one of the real reasons these trips exist. At its heart, the early church was shared life, not a weekly event. Luke describes it in Acts 2. They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer... And all the believers were together and had all things in common... Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. (Acts 2:42, 44, 46-47) They spent their days together. They ate in one another's homes. They shared a life. From the very start, the church was not something you attended on Sunday. It was people in and out of each other's homes and lives, on mission together. Far more than a good time after the service. The word translated fellowship in Acts 2:42 is the Greek koinonia, and it means a deep sharing of life, holding things in common, belonging to one another. That is what the believers in the catacombs had when they gathered to share meals among their dead. It is what Paul felt on the Appian Way when strangers walked miles out to meet him and walk him home. The early church was a table before it was ever a building. And most of us in the modern world are starving for exactly that. We do not even have a word for the kind of shared-life, shared-meal community the first Christians knew, so we often do not realize what we are missing. Then people sit down at that table in Italy and remember what they were made for. This is what moves Rachael most about the trip. For one week, people get to taste real community, and it wakes up a hunger God put in us from the beginning. The surprising part is that it does not end when the trip ends. Rachael is still on a text chain with women from last year, sharing prayer requests. Travelers fly across the country to celebrate milestones with people they met on a single week abroad. Friendships that started around that table are still growing strong years later, still praying, still showing up. That is what tells you what this trip really is. It was never only about Rome, or the old stones, or the ruins, amazing as they are. It is about what happens to your faith and your heart when you walk toward God next to other people who are doing the same thing. You come home with a new family you did not have before. If this whole series has been stirring something in you, this is the moment. There is no pressure here, because that is not how God works. He does not manipulate. But He does invite. And when there is a persistent tug on your heart that will not go away, sometimes that is the Lord, and sometimes you have to stop explaining all the reasons it will not work and step into the reason it will. Whether you come to Rome or not, the deeper invitation is the same: to step out of isolation and into the kind of community you were designed for. Father, thank You for these weeks and for every place we have walked through together. Thank You that the story of our faith is real and tangible, that it happened in real places with real people. Thank You that You are still building Your church, still gathering people around tables to share life together the way the first believers did. I pray for the person who feels that tug they cannot shake. Would You make it clear for them. Would You calm the fear and the noise and the excuses, and help them hear Your voice above all of it. Give them the courage to say yes. And whether they come to Rome or not, would You give them the gift of real community, the kind You designed us for. Thank You for loving us enough to call us out of isolation and into walking the road together. In Jesus' name, amen. What translation does Rachael use on the podcast? The written study materials use the New American Standard Bible (NASB). Can I come on the trip if I'm traveling alone? Yes, and many women do. Those are often the very travelers who find the community they have been missing, because the table has a way of turning strangers into family. Do these Bible study trips only go to Rome? Romans 15:13 – “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.” I invite God into every moment ahead. Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit to the Lord whatever you do.” I trust God to order my priorities. Matthew 6:33 – “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.” I receive God’s wisdom for the days ahead. Romans 8:29 – “To be conformed to the image of His Son.” I begin this week grounded in hope. Hebrews 6:19 – “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul.” I rest in God’s faithfulness as I move forward. Psalm 33:4 – “The word of the Lord is right and true.” Closing Prayer: God, as I step into this new week, I place everything ahead of me in Your care.
