A lot of us are on the same wavelength right now. We're seeing some of our old staples like skinny jeans back on the scene. All right, I'm pretty sure I say this every single Thursday, but today's topic is such a good one. I received two almost identical questions recently. Her Style Collective member Jen posted in the group and said what's styles or proportions are looking dated. I know if we love it we should wear it, but would love to know the most current way to wear skinny jeans, knee high boots, ballet flats, baggy sweaters, etc? I feel like these are all things that can look dated or current and I don't really know what the styling secrets are. And podcast listener Krista wrote in similarly to say you mentioned that skinny jeans are back for fall 2024. Thank God. Do you have any advice for styling skinny jeans in a modern way? For example, I feel like the cuff with low booties is y Yesterday's news. Would be great to hear your take on styling this beloved wardrobe staple. And both of these ladies are right. Some of our favorite wardrobe staples like skinny jeans and ballet flats have been making their resurgence. You don't have to worry about being mocked by your kids for wearing these pieces anymore. They are back. Everyone's wearing them. Celebrities, influencers alike. But trendsetters are not styling them like we used to see. There are some fresh new takes on these beloved classics. But before I share my recommendations and what I'm observing with you, I want to make the quick disclaimer that I am not a slave to trends and I don't want you to be either. As Jen alluded to, it's so much more important to wear things that make you feel your best. And I know for me, I don't want to look back at photos of myself in another decade or two and say what was I thinking? That trend was so ill, flattering or short lived. I want to look back and know that I was dressing as myself and for myself. Not according to what anyone else said that I should be wearing. So the first step is to figure out your style foundations. That includes what your signature look is, what flatters your figure, and which color qualities and combinations bring out your best. So please start there first. I also feel like this is a really good example of why you don't want to get rid of pieces that you love just because the quote unquote it crowd is telling you that they're dated. By the time we all got the memo that skinny jeans were out, they were already coming back in. I know this is so exhausting and it's really difficult to try to keep up. And so the good news is, and what I want you to take away more than anything else I'm going to share in today's episode is that you don't have to try to keep up. It is always more important to style your clothing and accessories in ways that make you feel good. That does not mean that it's okay to fall into a wardrobe rut or to keep wearing your outfits the same way on repeat over and over again. I always want you to maximize what you own and look for new ways to make your pieces feel fresh and contemporary so that you can be excited as you continue to get get dressed day after day. So we are going to talk about a few modern iterations of some of the pieces that you might still have in your wardrobe that are coming back around full circle, which we're all so happy about. And so let's start off with the skinny jean. Of course, I only want you to take the recommendations that really resonate with you that are going to look good on your body type and all of those things. So again, continue to go back to your style foundations and use them as benchmarks to evaluate what to try. But I will give you a few ideas for each of the pieces that were brought up in our listener questions. So first we are going to start with the skinny jean. And what I'm seeing mostly right now is that crisp and classic washes are way more in. So you're going to want to avoid things that have a lot of holes and distressing that is not the current look right now. Aside from raw edge hems or distressed hems which are in, you can absolutely opt for those. But in general I would steer clear of any really distressed jeans or acid wash jeans. Think dark wash, crisp, classic, timeless styles. Now as far as what shoes to wear them with, I'm definitely seeing lots of skinny jeans paired with fitted knee high boots. I absolutely love this look. It is so timeless and elegant. Simple heels or slingbacks are going to work really well here. You could also opt for ballet flats which are also continuing to trend. Or you can wear skinny jeans over a lug sole or western boot. Please friend, do not cuff your jeans. Our listener Krista is absolutely right that that is definitely a dated look and not something that's going to make you feel your most current. I also don't recommend tucking in your skinny jeans into ankle boots. It's going to be a lot better if you can wear them over the boots, so make sure that you are choosing boots that have a slimmer cut and that are working well underneath to avoid creating a lot of lumps and bumps under your pants. We still want to create a nice straight and smooth silhouette from your hip to your ankle, so this can take some finessing. When in doubt, opt for crop length pants. That's going to be helpful as well. Crop length skinny jeans will probably work better over some of those taller boot styles. Now, unless you're short waisted, I do recommend that you stick to mid or high rise skinny jeans. That's going to feel more current than a low rise jean. I know low rise pants have been back in, but that's going to be more in the baggy jean trend than the skinny jean style. That's definitely going to feel a little bit more early 2000s, less 20s and I'm probably really late in finding this out, but I recently heard that Gen Z is referring to the 1980s and the 1990s as the late 1900s and that makes me feel so incredibly old. I don't know about you, I'm also probably even older because I just found that out very recently and I think it's been going on for quite a while. But anyway, I digress with skinny jeans. If you are wearing a fitted top, I definitely recommend that you add a belt to create a nice finished, polished look. If you're going to opt for more of a boxy or cropped style blazer or cardigan, you're probably going to want to tuck in whatever layering piece you have underneath so that you can create a nice flattering proportion and bring some good definition to your waist. So those are a couple different options for pairing with your skinny jeans. Let's talk about knee high boots next. These are super in right now, although I do feel like they're truly a timeless shoe style. And we already talked about how a great fitted knee high boot looks fantastic over skinny jeans so we can put a check mark on that one. You can also create a similar look with Leggings. But in this case, I do recommend wearing a long or oversized sweater for some additional coverage and to create a nice, well balanced outfit. You might also remember that tailored shorts have been trending and I've seen quite a few modern takes on knee high boots with monochromatic tights and shorts. Shorts. I think this is a really cute look. It can help to elongate the appearance of your legs and it can also put a little bit of an alluring twist on your winter wardrobe. You can always pair knee high boots with skirts as well. And the most current silhouettes are going to be mini skirts. I would probably recommend opting for a length around your mid thigh. Or you could also do midi skirts like a flowy satin skirt, for example. If you prefer longer silhouettes, you might try pairing your knee high boots with a maxi length sweater dress or a nice long coat. All right, next on the list is ballet flats. If I'm not wearing heels, this is my next go to dressy shoe option. They definitely speak to my feminine personal style so much. And again, I feel like this is another pretty classic style. So I almost want to say you can do no wrong here as long as you're keeping in mind silhouettes that work for your body shape and proportions and that flatter you. However, if you are looking for some modern approaches, square toe ballet flats have a very contemporary feel. But again, you always want to opt for styles and shapes that suit your taste. So you might want to do more of a pointed flat if you're looking to elongate the line of your leg or a rounded toe if you do like that. More ballerina, feminine, pretty feel. So opt for what works best for you. But square toe ballet flats are definitely the most contemporary looking. I think that they also look fantastic with with cropped length pants and jeans. This is going to give you a more current look with your ballet flats. Mary Jane styles are also really in. If you want to look for that little strap at the ankle, that's going to give you a really modern feel as well. I love ballet flats with a long satin midi skirt. So if knee high boots aren't your thing, this could give you a softer look for your outfit. And I think the most contemporary way to style ballet flats is to keep your overall outfit a little bit more structured and minimalistic. So simple is best here. All right, last on the list we have baggy sweaters. And the key to pulling off any oversized piece is to always make sure that you're showing some skin either at your neckline, at your wrists or your ankles or creating some definition at your waist. I teach the why behind this and provide lots of great visual examples inside her style collective, but the most important thing is not to get swallowed up by your clothing. So I think a baggy sweater with a wide leg pant looks looks really current, but you're going to want to either opt for an open V neck style sweater or you might want to push or roll up the sleeves. Or if there's not too much fabric, you could try tucking in the sweater and maybe consider adding a belt to the look as well. This is going to give you a really cool, effortless outfit. If you want to pair your baggy sweaters with some oversized wide leg pants as well, just make sure that you're styling them to highlight some of your favorite features and not drown you overall. I also love balancing oversized pieces with fitted styles, so skinny jeans could work well here as well. Or a mini skirt would give you a really classically sexy pairing. Or if it's a long enough sweater, you could also wear it as a dress. This is a very modern approach to take as well. Another styling trick that I'm really feeling at the moment is a sweater wrapped over your shoulders. So you could take your baggy sweaters and wrap them over a matching fitted turtleneck, a loose button down shirt or a simple tank top if you're in a warmer winter climate. And one final tip for all of the styles that we discussed today, you can make any of them feel more current by opting to incorporate them in a seasonal trend color or print. Like leopard for example. You always want to consult your complexion, your hair color and your eyes or better yet, your personal color palette if I've designed one for you and choose a trend color that complements your personal coloring. We always want your clothing to bring out your best and to be in harmony with your personal features. A few seasonal favorites right now include burgundy, olive green, pretty much any tone of brown. Navy is also really big and of course cool pink is still in at the moment as well. Metallics are also really big and could be great for the upcoming holiday season. So regardless, I hope that this sparks your creativity and encourages you to experiment with new ways to wear your beloved wardrobe staples. Whether they're trending or not, there are almost always ways to make your current pieces work even better for you. So please let go of what anyone says, wear what makes you feel good, and have some fun when you get dressed this season.
